Zoo of Acadiana

Roars into the Season with a Reason It’s now been ten years since George Oldenberg seized the opportunity to buy the Zoo of Acadiana, and probably fifteen or so years since my last visit to the Zoo–long before Mr. Oldenberg took over.

As a child, the Zoo was never overly spectacular or over-filled with exotic animals that capture a young boy’s awe. I remember the agony of having to hold someone’s hand because the sidewalks were broken and pathways were muddy.

In fact, the only highlight I can remember was being able to pet a baby alligator, which isn’t exactly uncommon for any resident of South Louisiana. In comparison to the Baton Rouge Zoo and the Audubon Zoo, the Zoo of Acadiana was a meager shadow in the starry eyes of a kid who wanted to see color, diversity, and rare species. That all changed with the introduction of Mr. George.

As an adult given an assignment to write an article about all the wonderful things our zoo has to offer, I thought this one might be difficult. Let me just tell you, I could not have been more wrong.

It started with a simple phone call to Lea Lofton, the Zoo’s Director of Marketing. My goal was to gather as much information as I could about the Zoo’s recent acquisition of two extremely rare Golden Bengal tigers; and after about ten minutes of talk time, Lea had invited me to 10 FACE DECEMBER 2012

come to the zoo for a personalized tour. Little did I know that she would have Mr. Oldenberg in attendance during my visit, and how much I would learn about the abundance of life and love one man can bestow upon a single place.

Mr. George (whose employees often refer to as “Master G”) has spent every day of the past ten years developing and executing ideas that have truly given a visit to the Zoo a whole new meaning. He’s created: Zoo Live, an event that our local schools have chosen as a hot field trip destination; the Safari of Lights, a month long display of the Zoo lit up in Christmas lights and Christmas activities for the kids; and “I Do” at the Zoo, a reception hall dedicated for those interested in tying the knot in a wild fashion.

Sound fun yet? In addition to these new events, Mr. George has acquired new, exotic animals to add to the exhibits.

characters and a herd of Scimitar Oryx, who have been listed on the endangered species list. In recent months, they’ve acquired a female giraffe to mate with their male giraffe and obtained two Golden Bengal Tigers that have proven to be the Zoo’s star attractions. I had the luxury of hand feeding the tigers and can honestly say it was one of the most memorable times I’ve ever had at any zoo.

Although Mr. George probably has more fun than anyone who visits his Zoo, he works extremely hard providing a fun, family environment for which our community should be proud. As an avid conservationist, Oldenberg works in alliance with zoos from around the nation in efforts to breed rare species.

That’s a special task given to one man. Not only is it special for him, it’s special for us as a community because, obviously, Mr. George fully intends to share these incredible species with us and I personally thank him for it.

15 Ways to Beat the Holiday Blues If we are to believe advertisements and the media, the holidays should be a glittering magic time when dreams come true and all expectations are met. While that might happen on TV, in real life people don’t usually resolve all their problems and live happily ever after in an hour. For many, the holidays are a time of tension, pressure, loneliness, depression, reflection on past failures, anxiety, and loss.

What Causes Holiday Blues?

Seasonal stress has many causes. Financial anxieties mount as holiday spending spirals out of control. People run themselves ragged trying to meet unrealistic expectations and deadlines.

Complicated family dynamics cause tensions to rise to unbearable levels. Separation from family and friends can cause depression.

Too much alcohol, rich food and late nights can contribute to weight gain, upset stomachs, and even insomnia. Fantasized memories of how things were or how they ought to be can intensify feelings and erode our emotional wellbeing.

What Can You Do About It? No matter what your circumstances are, the holidays need not be a pressure cooker. Here are 15 ways to help you get through them with your psyche intact: 1. Forget about perfection - you can’t please everyone. Accept the fact that things are not always going to go as planned and laugh when they don’t.

2. Be flexible about traditions. If honoring them is only going to add more stress, don’t.

3. Set differences aside but consider family issues when

planning gatherings. If you know someone will drink too much and behave badly, plan a non-alcoholic breakfast or brunch instead of dinner.

4. Stick to a budget and enforce your spending limits. If not, you’ll be stressed for the rest of the year trying to pay off your bills. Gifts need not be expensive to be personal and meaningful.

5. Avoid being pressured into traveling if you can’t afford it or don’t want to travel. Have an honest conversation with your family and plan to have you own celebration at your own home. If you travel purely out of guilt, both you and your wallet will suffer for it.

6. Eat and drink in moderation but pick another time to start a diet. A strict deprivation routine in the midst of holiday delicacies and temptations will only add further stress.

7. Ask guests to contribute food for holiday parties. There is no reason for you to do all the cooking when most people are happy with a potluck.

8. Stay in the present. People and events are seldom as glorified as we remember them. Norman Rockwell moments exist only in paintings. Stop fantasizing about the past and comparing what once existed to what is here and now. All that matters is now.

9. Plan ahead. Give yourself plenty of time to run errands, wrap and mail gifts, and prepare food. Otherwise you can end up feeling like you are a day late and a dollar short.

10. Avoid getting caught in the last minute shopping stampede. when you are likely to make poorer choices and spend more than you want.

11. Prioritize. Not every task is of equal importance and you can’t be expected to do everything. Learn to say no.

12. Seek out kindred souls and spend time with them. Reach out to others. Isolation breeds depression.

13. Give yourself time out for recharging. If you burn yourself out your holiday could go up in smoke.

14. Acknowledge your feelings. If you are not in a celebratory mood, it’s okay. You are not the only one.

15. Practice stress management techniques to neutralize emotionally charged situations that can ruin your holidays.

Why is Christmas (and the surrounding holidays) so spellbinding to us? Because it’s enchanted! We’re surrounded with images of sparkling trees and glittering decorations.

Anything is possible: Snowmen can come alive! Reindeer can fly. A jolly old St. Nicholas can know your heart’s desire and deliver it. Ah! St. Nick knows a secret that can add holiday bliss to your relationship. He knows that deep inside everyone is a longing for someone to behold us.

Beholding has to do with how we look at each other. It happens when we see each other in depth; when we take in what our partner is feeling; what he or she is longing for at this moment. Then, we tell them that

we see their longing, or their joy, or their pain. Such communication creates a soullevel meeting. And this is the kind of looking at one another that creates closeness.

To give you an example, have you ever seen a child on Christmas morning run to the Christmas tree in expectation? The bliss the child feels when he or she finds just what they were hoping for is not just about getting what she wanted. It’s about having been

seen; having been attended to; in other words, having been beheld. We can have that kind of effect on one another when we behold each other. Being so deeply seen becomes an event; a special moment in time. It is life-enriching.

And it can be life-changing.

Here are two further examples: • When you see that your partner seems upset and ask about it: “You seem troubled. Are you concerned about something?”

• When you see that your partner is feeling positive feelings (excitement, love, inspiration): “I love seeing you have so much pleasure.”

Oversized ornaments, pretty lights, and cheery holiday music are all signs that the holidays are here again. This time of year is filled with nostalgia, gift giving, and of course, lots of our favorite holiday foods and desserts. Here in South Louisiana, gathering with family and friends is a way of life and just isn’t complete without Uncle Greg’s famous fried turkey or Mom’s pecan pie. Trying to stay focused on our health can be a challenge at any time of year but it can seem like an especially overwhelming task between Halloween and Mardi Gras. This is where a few helpful tips can help to keep you on track for a healthy holiday in 2012.

Plan Ahead

Never, I repeat never, go to a party or gathering when you are famished. This is a sure way to have you hovering over the snack table in zero-to-sixty seconds. Always have at least a small snack before a party to ensure that your defenses are up and you will be more likely to indulge within reason. When partaking at the snack table at a party, make yourself a plate and sit down to enjoy. Without doing so, you are much more likely to overeat if you are standing or grazing with all your favorite goodies within reach.

Offer to bring a healthy dish to the party. Not only will this impress your host or hostess but it’s a great way to add a guilt-free option to the buffet. Veggie trays with light dressing are high in fiber, packed with important vitamins and minerals, and fit into any healthy diet.

Modify

We all know that a holiday with the family just wouldn’t be the same without your Aunt Doris’ fabulous pumpkin bread. With any recipe, there are ways to modify ingredients for a “lighter” twist. For example, just by substituting applesauce instead of oil in your favorite aunt’s pumpkin bread recipe, you can save over 1,000 calories! You can even take it a step further and make muffins instead of loaves to keep portion size in check!

Pumpkin Muffins Dry ingredients:

• 31⁄3 cups flour • 2 tsp. baking soda • 3 cups sugar • 1½ tsp. salt • 1 tsp. cinnamon • 1 tsp. nutmeg • ¼ tsp. ground ginger

Mix dry ingredients with:

• 1 cup applesauce • 4 eggs • 2/3 cup water • 2 cups pumpkin

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare muffin tins by spraying with non-stick cooking spray.

Fill muffin tins three-quarters full and bake at 350°F for 20-30 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Recipe makes 24 muffins. Each muffin contains: Calories 183, Fat 1 gram, Total Carbohydrate 41.2 grams, Dietary Fiber 1.2 grams, and Protein 3 grams.

By substituting applesauce instead of oil, each muffin is saving 70 calories and 9 grams of fat!

Carving out some time for walking or other exercise can help fight stress, fatigue, and keep your calorie balance in check. Get the whole family involved by changing it up a bit this year. Instead of zoning out to the game after your holiday meal try setting the DVR and going outside for a game of touch football. This is a great way to fend off the post-turkey nap and burn some extra calories!

Get Crafty Instead of giving gifts of homemade fudge, cookies, or other sweets this year try getting into the spirit by giving holiday crafts instead. Choose an activity like making ornaments, cards, or wreaths and take the focus away from food. Get the kids involved and make it a family event!

With keeping a couple tips in mind this December, you can stay engaged in the fun and festivities without all the guilt and extra pounds. Have a happy and healthy holiday!

Microgreens with Curry Vinaigrette (Serves 6) 4 teaspoons curry powder 2 teaspoons water 1/2 cup canola oil 2 tablespoons cider vinegar

1/2 teaspoon minced garlic 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 6 (1/4 lb.) cups microgreens

Stir together curry powder and water in a small bowl to make a paste. Let stand 5 minutes, and then stir in oil and let stand, stirring occasionally for 1 hour.

Pour the curry oil through a paper-towe l-lined sieve into a small cup and discard any solids.

Whisk together vinegar, garlic, salt, and pepper, then add curry oil, whisking until combined.

Divide greens among plates, drizzle with some dressing, and enjoy!

It’s Party Time!

So what does ‘RSVP’ on the invitation really mean? This French term means, “Répondez, s’il vous plaît,” or, “Please reply.” You must absolutely respond to the hostess to inform her if you will be attending the event. No excuses, even if you just had a fight with your spouse or your party wardrobe doesn’t fit any more. Mystery is entertaining in novels, but not when the host is in the dark as to whether 50 or 100 guests may show up.

Invitations: Declining and Accepting Invitations are delivered in many different formats these days, and the response should fit the method of delivery. If the invitation arrives by mail and gives a phone number for the reply, try to ensure you talk with the host by phone. Cell voicemail can be unreliable and home answering machines may be fiddled with by spouses or children who forget to share that people called with responses.

If the invitation has ‘regrets only,’ then you should only call the host if you will be unable to attend. If you regret, you can’t change your mind and just show up without informing the hostess at least a week in advance. If you do not regret and just “blow off ” the event, shame on you! If the party host catches you by phone and you do not want to be put on the spot, by all means say, “I will have to check my calendar and let you know,” and then please, let them know as soon as possible.

You should never arrive early. But if you are hosting an event and you have unexpected early birds arrive, put them to work. Ask them to make sure there’s toilet paper in every bathroom, or to make sure a light is on in every room.

Why more Louisiana women are getting into hunting

Who says hunting is a man’s sport? In its summer 2012 issue, Ducks Unlimited recognized women as the fastest growing group of hunters. And in a 2009 study, the National Sporting Goods Organization reported over 160,000 new female hunters. “More women hunters is important, [because] the number of male hunters has been on the decline for years.”

Less hunters means less votes on topics like conservation of wetlands and hunting regulations, “so the increase [in female hunters] is good,” says Russell Kahn, my hunting mentor and an avid hunter of all game species.

“I’m seeing more and more women coming out to hunt our fields,” says Blu Landry, owner of Blu’s Hunting Lodge.

“They’re coming back year after year. They’re doing it for the release and recreation, same as us men. Women are good hunters [because] they’re patient.”

Modern wildfowl hunting became a gentleman’s sport in the 17th century and has been a male-dominated activity ever since. We have all seen paintings depicting men in chaps with their shotguns, retrievers, and their bounty of freshly harvested game birds; but the times, they are a changing.

These days, more women hunters are picking up shotguns and heading to the bayous, rice fields, marshes, and other waters of Louisiana. And waterfowl conservation groups are beginning to notice.

Delta Waterfowl was established in 1911, and just held its first-ever women’s hunt complete with wine and gourmet cheeses, duck cooking demonstrations, bird identification and more. However, not all of us gun-toting females need such luxuries to lure us to the waters of the South for a hunt. The sheer beauty of the sun rising over a flooded field causing the fog to slowly disappear in the quiet of morning is enough for most.

Hunting of any game takes outdoorswomen to areas off the beaten path. It allows us to discover backwater swamps and other pristine areas we would otherwise not visit. Having spent over a decade as an ecologist and a backpacker exploring the Southeast, some of the most beautiful places I have visited are in the slow meandering swamps of Louisiana on a morning or afternoon hunt. of work, family, and other responsibilities. Other women hunt to spend time with family. There is an old saying, “If you teach a man to hunt, he goes hunting. If you teach a woman to hunt, the whole family goes hunting.”

For hunter Alayna Larriviere, she hunts in honor of her brother. “My brother passed away a few years ago,” Larriviere said. “He was interested in deer hunting and shot his first deer a few years before he passed away. I always thought I’d like to try to shoot a deer when I saw him coming home with his ‘prize.’ After he passed away, I did not want his stands to go to waste. Our birthdays were also on the same day, and rifle season usually opens that week, so I go out every year and try to shoot one for him…I shot one on our birthday last year so it was very bittersweet and rewarding. I started out hunting for that reason, but after feeling the awesome rush you get after shooting a deer; just seeing the deer, I was immediately hooked and it has become a passion.”

Roasted Duck Recipe The easiest way to cook a wild duck is to roast it whole.

Follow these easy steps for a delicious roasted duck.

What You Will Need: • One wild duck • Salt and pepper • Two celery sticks and two carrot • Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. • Once you have your duck plucked, dressed, and washed in and out with water make sure to pat it dry with a paper towel and cover the skin with salt and pepper.

• Brown the duck in a cast iron skillet over medium heat, duck fat is preferable, but oil will also work. Use tongs to turn the duck until it is golden brown on all sides. This will take several minutes.

• Turn the burner off and place the duck on a bed of carrots and celery in the same cast iron skillet.

• Put the bird in the oven and after 10 minutes, then start checking the internal temperature regularly by placing the thermometer into the breast. The thermometer should read 135 degrees F before it is ready to come out of the oven. It can take up to 25-30 minutes for large birds.

• After pulling it out of the oven, set the duck on a cutting board and cover it with aluminum foil, allowing it to rest for at least five minutes. This should bring the breast temperature up to 145 degrees F. Serve with a side dish and salad and enjoy!

The power of a shotgun or rifle and the stalking of prey also gives many women a way to find a peaceful release from day-to-day stress. The enjoyment does not end with the hunt; the game is delicious, and if you have an opportunity to harvest an animal, they are an added reward at the end of the hunt.

Handling ducks and geese is nothing new to Louisiana women, as the smell of delicious dishes such as duck confit, duck sauce piquant, goose gravies, and other delectable dishes have filled the air of Cajun kitchens for centuries. These days, women are not only cooking game birds, but bringing them from the field to the kitchen by killing and cleaning them, as well.

Green Boot Creations owner Emily Bettevy started hunting last season and likes it because of the self-sufficiency the sport provides.

“I started hunting ducks last season and find it very rewarding,” Bettevy said. “I respect hunting because, like the foods I preserve, I know where animal comes from.”

In passing, Bettevy mentioned she was on her way back from a

morning hunt on opening day with four teal in tow. For Bettevy, hunting, cleaning and cooking waterfowl is an extension of her business, which produces artisanal local food preserves.

“You get a lot more intimate with your food when you kill it and cook it yourself,” she said. “It’s important for me to know where my food comes from, the same way as when I pick peppers and citrus for the foods I preserve and sell. My family grew up eating food that my dad killed; it fed my family. I find it is important to know how to survive and be more self-sufficient and rely less on strangers for my food. It’s different than buying a chicken from the store, and it tastes fresher and better.”

For Lacey Malcombe, it is an adventurous escape. “From the way the sky turns cotton candy shades over the marsh making everything glow, to the kingfisher diving into the water after a meal, there is something about being so far from a road or home that makes every sense tune into the raw nature around you...it’s almost spiritual.”

Historically, Acadiana has shown great generosity toward the less fortunate, and many notable non-profit organizations provide help to those who need it most. During this joyous season of gratitude and giving, it is important to note that those in need, and the organizations who serve them, need your support throughout the entire year. One of those organizations helping the needy every single day of the year, offering many essential services is Lafayette Catholic Service Centers (LCSC), which operates St. Joseph Diner and eight other local programs.

LCSC Executive Director Kimberly Boudreaux stated: “Many people in our community are familiar with Lafayette Catholic Service Centers because they have served at St. Joseph Diner. Often, they are surprised to hear that we operate several shelters for homeless men, women, children and veterans; a hygiene facility; an emergency financial assistance office; and a homeless prevention and re-housing program. Every one of these programs needs support year round.”

In the last year, across their nine programs, LCSC touched the lives of over 1,700 individuals. On any given day, the staff of LCSC are sheltering the street homeless, feeding hundreds of hungry people, connecting those without homes to affordable permanent housing opportunities, helping those in financial crisis return to self-sufficiency, providing 30 FACE DECEMBER 2012

access to hot showers and laundry services, and giving countless community members the opportunity to donate and volunteer to be a part of their mission.

How can you help?

Here are 5 tips to volunteering and donating during the holiday season and all year long! Following these tips will insure a meaningful experience for you and your family, and more importantly a happy holiday for those who need it the most.

1. Call ahead and schedule. We want you to have a meaningful experience which sometimes means putting a cap on the number of volunteers on a project at a time. Volunteers around the holidays schedule months in advance. If you show up on a day when a program is already full, your experience is less likely to be positive. Help us help you to help others and be open to coming near the holidays.

For those we serve, every day is an important day.

2. Give the gift of presence. If the location where you want to volunteer has the help they need, offer to be a patron that day. Offer to be present and have conversations with the people they serve. Give them the gift of a warm heart. If you can’t come, consider handwriting cards for the homeless or the homebound. There are men, women, veterans and children in our programs.

3. Consider a financial contribution. Most organizations have wish lists or gift catalogs that outline exactly how your contribution affects the needy. There are gift item needs for various programs or for general operational expenses.

Just ask how your money will be utilized.

4. Provide current needs. Community driven organizations need in-kind donations to make the holidays special for the homebound, the homeless and those in crisis. Examples include turkeys, canned goods, holiday cards, and more.

5. Think beyond the holiday, make a new tradition. Many programs have a burst of community involvement around the holidays but not consistently throughout the year. Consider volunteering a different day as your holiday tradition or set up an end of the year or monthly giving plan (financial or in-kind) that extends your generosity throughout the year.

You’ve probably heard the saying ‘there’s an app for that’ and it is amazingly true. The availability and flexibility of smart phone apps is at an all time high. Make the most of the technology at your fingertips by utilizing just a few of the thousands of app choices in order to organize and simplify the day-to-day aspects of your life and help make the holidays, and every day, run more smoothly. You might even free up extra precious time to spend with the family.

1. Dropbox – Never email a document to yourself again!

Never say, “Oh, that’s on my computer at home.”

Dropbox allows you to access your files from anywhere, anytime. Install Dropbox to your computer then use the Dropbox app for your smart phone and/or iPad and have access to your files on-the-go. Share files with others and eliminate the need to email documents.

Organize shared files so that everyone on a project has access to all the files at the same time. Dropbox is particularly useful for files too large for email.

2. Business Card Scan – Scan business cards and an image of the card is saved as well as the information on the card. It is loaded on the screen in ‘Edit’ mode so you can correct anything that was misinterpreted in the scan. If you choose, you can load the card info directly into your Contacts.

3. Card Star – Eliminate all the loyalty cards in your wallet or on your key chain and let Card Star manage them for you. Scan or load the cards to the Card Star app and the barcodes can be scanned directly from your phone.

4. SnipSnap – Tired of carrying around all those coupons in your purse, or even worse, having forgotten it on the kitchen counter when you are in the store checkout line. You can even use other people’s coupons. Going to a store but don’t have a coupon? Search in SnipSnap and download generic coupons loaded by other SnipSnap users. Even better, when you are walking into the store, SnipSnap will text you that you have a valid coupon to use in the store.

5. GiftPlanner – Get rid of the scraps of paper or spreadsheets with list of Christmas gifts and birthday gifts. GiftPlanner (and other holiday gift list apps) allows you to create a customized file for every person on your list. Gearing up to welcome a treasure trove of friends and relatives to your table (or tables) this Christmas? Welcome to the club! So many of us will be entertaining everyone on our list because it is what we love. It is what warms our hearts at Christmas!

When we were children it was Santa’s secret adventure down the chimney and what fabulous gifts he would stuff our stockings with that warmed our hearts. Now, our favorite part of the holiday season comes in the spirit of giving: from supply trips to the community shelter and deliveries to the local food drives, to appreciation gifts for the special people in our lives and of course hosting the annual Christmas dinner. Every year we decorate the Christmas tree, string the lights in the yard, add wreaths and garland to our entry and mantle showing our spirit for the season and displaying the excitement in our hearts that this time of year brings.

Decorating for Christmas dinner is no different except when it comes to the overflow table most of us use annually. Some refer to it as the ‘children’s table’. Others use place cards, carefully blending their guest list into groupings that will create the most enjoyable experience

for all. We seem, however to have one problem: the overflow table simply rings flat. It just isn’t as beautiful or festive as our dining tables. We have done the best we can do, right? What if we could do a little better?

There is a way to create beauty and unexpected sparkle to our overflow table with a beautiful chandelier wreath complete with ribbons, bows, and twinkle lights that will truly wow the crowd.

It can be used anywhere in the house; not just over the additional seating for dinner. Hang it in the foyer, or over the kitchen island, even from the exterior entry ways to the home, this decorative

treatment is as festive as it gets.

the battery lights hiding the wire again.

• Add batteries and affix the battery boxes to

the wire backing of each wreath using the zip

or wire ties until secure.

• With your wreaths sitting upside down on your workspace; tie the end of each of three ribbons equidistant from one another on the wire backing of each wreath with one small knot, leaving 5 ft. of length on each ribbon. Do the same with the large wreath leaving 6 feet of length on each ribbon.

• Next gather the three 5.5 ft. ribbons on

the small wreath and tie a single knot loosely

at approximately 16" up.

• Next gather the three 6.5 ft. ribbons on

the large wreath and tie a single knot loosely at approximately 22" up.

• Affix each bow at the base of each ribbon on

each wreath.

• Stack the large wreath on top of the

small wreath.

• Bring the ribbon from the small wreath through

the center of the large wreath so that the knot of

the small wreath is even with the large wreath.

• Next knot the ribbon from the small wreath with

the knot of the ribbon of the large wreath.

• Snip the excess ribbon from the small wreath at

point of knot.

• Add a top double knot and hang on desired

hanger in ceiling.

In addition, gently exfoliating once a week will help make skin brighter and more receptive to moisturizer, resulting in a healthy glow. Try using a gentle scrub to lift dry, dead skin cells and help skin look brighter and more evenly textured.

(BPT) - Temperatures are poised to plunge this winter and severe climate changes can negatively impact skin. Plus, harsh irritants, dyes and artificial perfumes can trigger sensitivities, making it even more difficult to effectively care for skin.

Combat common seasonal sensitive skin triggers and maintain healthy-looking, beautiful skin throughout the cooler months with these top skin care tips:

Adjust the heat: When temperatures drop, the natural reaction is to raise the thermostat. However, dry indoor air causes water to evaporate from skin, leaving it dehydrated, tight and flaky. Try using a humidifier to replace lost moisture in the air. This creates a more humid and moisturized environment for skin.

By Connor Day One thing often heard during the holiday season—along with Christmas music and jingle bells—is the age old saying, “It’s the thought that counts.” This holiday season take that saying to heart and show those you love just how much you really care about them.

A few years ago I decided that rather than buy my brothers’ Christmas presents from the store; I would make them instead.

Many times, a job is just that, a job. But for Jenn, it was a new start, a true turning point in her life.

I knew this would be very special, not only working with Hans, but because there isn’t another husband and wife radio team in the area.”

Being local celebrities (a label that makes Jenn uncomfortable); Fast and Jenn are invited to participate in many community events.

“It is my favorite part of the job – I love it,” Jenn declares, “I love having the opportunity to be so active in the community.” Jenn and Hans have participated in such things as ‘celebrity judges’ for UL’s Paint the Town Red and FOX15 Acadiana Idol and as hosts of Downtown Alive just to name a few. “Being able to socialize and interact with the community is one of the things we love the most.

To become ‘Fast and Jenn’, there were some challenges to work out. Who would take care of the kids in the morning? Who would get them to school? But the station, showing true Acadiana heart, made it work. Jenn laughs, “The kids get up in the morning and go to the station with me in their jammies.

The kitchen is set up for them to have breakfast every morning and we even have a pantry. After breakfast, they get dressed for school and I drive them to school in the station breaks.” It is a unique situation and the station has made it work for them.

The kids don’t have to get up any earlier than if they went straight to school from home. And Jenn still gets to drive them to school without missing a beat at work.

In addition to entertainment events, Jenn and Hans are very active with non-profit organizations and and use their ‘celebrity voice’ to educate, promote and, hopefully, build support for these area organizations. What started as part of their job has now become a beloved part of their life. “It makes my heart smile,” Jenn beams.

“When you don’t make a lot of money, you can’t just donate money to all these events. You can give your time, and it’s part of my job to do something that I love…Again, it makes my heart smile.”
