Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated History
Delta Sigma Theta was founded on January 13, 1913 by 22 collegiate women at Howard University. These students wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to those in need. In March of 1913, the Founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. performed their first public act. They participated in the Women's Suffrage March in Washington, D.C. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was incorporated in 1930. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is a private, not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. Since its founding more than 200,000 women have joined the organization. The organization is a sisterhood of predominantly Black, college educated women. The sorority currently has 1,000 collegiate and alumnae chapters located in the United States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica and the Republic of Korea. 3
Fayetteville Alumnae Chapter History
The Fayetteville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, began due to the foresight of Soror Mildred Parker Jones. It was chartered on September 12, 1953, as Epsilon Alpha Sigma Chapter. In 1960, the name was changed to Fayetteville Alumnae Chapter. The eleven charter members were: Lorena Coppage Carter, Ida Boykin Cooper, Ebbie Garlington Dorsey, Ida Cogdell Fowler, Mildred Scott Johnson, Rose Jordan Johnson, Mildred Parker Jones, Mary Helen LeGrand, Neutrice Wilson Merritt, Ella Louise Murphy, and Barnetta Juliet McGhee. Neutrice Wilson Merritt served as the first Chapter President.
Community involvement included library projects and teen cultural activities in Fayetteville and Clinton, North Carolina. Fayetteville Alumnae Chapter held its first Jabberwock Pageant in February, 1954 with the Delta Xi Chapter (Fayetteville State University). Proceeds from the Jabberwock Pageant funded scholarships for deserving students. Since 1953, the Fayetteville Alumnae Chapter continues to serve the Fayetteville and Cumberland County communities through several public service programs including Cinderella Closet, Arts and Letters Red Carpet Events, Human Trafficking Forums and the “CHOSEN documentary about child trafficking presentations, Jabberwock Scholarship Pageant, Adopt a Site-Amtrak Train Station and Operation Inasmuch. 4

History of Jabberwock Jabberwock is a pageant that was conceived from the Lewis Carroll tale Alice in Wonderland. In the story a mythical character, Jabberwock would call together the members of his kingdom once a year to present a colorful pageant. This concept was expounded upon by Marion Hope Conover as a method of raising money for the chapter she belonged to in Boston Massachusetts. The first Jabberwock was presented in 1926 by the Iota Chapter and with its immediate success the idea spread quickly to other chapters, becoming a Delta institution and anticipated event annually. The Jabberwock seeks to present young ladies to the public and render entertainment of the highest caliber. Proceeds are given to charity, awarded as scholarship and used to provide various public service projects. The participants attend sessions to prepare them for the pageant, interviews and social business settings. The Jabberwock represents an evening of elegance and reflects the highest ideals of the sorority.
History of the Fayetteville Alumnae Chapter Jabberwock Delta Xi and Epsilon Alpha Sigma Chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., presented their first annual Jabberwock in the college auditorium, April 23, 1954. The theme of the Jabberwock was “I’ve Known Rivers.”
This colorful panorama of brilliant stars was reigned over by the queen of the Jabberwock, Miss Malline Crawley; her attendants were Ella Smith and Birdie Eley of the college family and Portia Jones, Frances Colvin, Evelyn Brooks and Josie Jackson of the city and county high schools. Flower girls were Yvonne Lewis of Clinton, Charlotte Cherry, Sylvia Pindle and Mae Louise Seabrook of Newbold Training School. John Cary

"Follow your dreams" Chase them, Grab them Tight them in to your heart. Wear your dream like a necklace As a reminder of who you are & what you desire to do.
Don't let them slip away from your hands. For some dreams are just lost in the thought and undone They slowly fade away like a dusty wind But see dreams are not meant to be that way Dreams can be real and true Which Only the strong and committed ones will pursue. Don't close your own doors, go on and follow your dreams
God will walk with you and when you lay down He will watch over you. When you wake up He will guide you. Proverbs 23:18 " There is surely a future for you, and your hope will not be cut off. - Best Wishes From: Valdus, Angela & Tryphina
