ENOTE EDITOR'S
very so often, I find myself standing at an opening of some special project in our community. Recently, it was the launch of a new development on the North Coast, and as I looked around I realised just how many of these moments I have been fortunate enough to witness over the past two decades. Schools, businesses, community centres, restaurants, estates; so many beginnings that have gone on to become lasting parts of the fabric of local communities.
What makes these occasions meaningful is not just the ribboncutting or the photographs; it is the people. Faces I have seen over the years, still showing up, still investing themselves in shaping this region with the same mix of passion and experience. Some bring energy and new ideas, others bring wisdom and stability. Together, they build something enduring.
The truth is, growth and legacy do not happen by chance. They happen through decisions. In both the big defining moments and the small everyday choices, our future is shaped by the paths we decide to take. I have seen it in the entrepreneurs who decided to take a risk and open a shop somewhere in town (or remotely), in families who chose to root themselves
here and build communities, and in those who commit themselves to local causes with the hope that what they start today will echo for years to come.
This issue of Th e Midlands magazine carries that same spirit. From estates designed with belonging and purpose at their heart, to local entrepreneurs who have sustained their businesses through decades of change, to The Rose Society that has kept heritage blooms alive for nearly forty years, these are stories about more than what is happening now. They are stories about the choices that create legacy.
For me, being present at these launches is both a privilege and a reminder. We are not only observers of milestones; we are participants in shaping what comes next. The Midlands is not simply evolving around us. We are all part of the decisions, both big and small, that will determine the community we hand over to the next generation.

The Magic of Art
WORDS KATE STUCKE
Have you ever met a crayon that could speak of sadness? Or a smudge of paint that whispered joy? Welcome to the wonderfully squiggly world of Art Therapy, where feelings have colours, and expression doesn’t need words. As a Play and Art Therapist for children, I’ve watched masterpieces emerge from sticky fingers and sparkly glue. So here’s the truth: kids aren’t the only ones who need a safe space to unravel the beautiful mess inside. Grown-ups, this includes you too.
What is Art Therapy, really?
It’s not about making art that belongs in a gallery but rather about making sense of your inner gallery. Art Therapy uses colour, texture, shape, and creative play as tools to explore emotions, process experiences, and foster healing. You don’t have to be “good at art”, you just need to be curious.
Art taps into the subconscious where words falter but creativity flows. A child may not say “I feel overwhelmed,” but they might paint a tornado. A teenager may not express anxiety, but the frantic strokes of black charcoal would speak volumes. Through colour, we can get a glimpse of their emotional weather report.
Different colours can reveal different emotional states. Blue might indicate sadness or calm, while red may reflect anger, passion, or energy. Yellow could be joy or anxiety, while black may be protective, maybe even powerful, and not just gloomy. It’s less about the rules of colour and more about their personal meaning. Colour is the secret language of the soul.
Try these Art Therapy ideas at home:
• Feelings Wheel Collage: Grab magazines and scissors. Cut out images or colours that match feelings. Stick them in a circle like a pizza of emotions.
• Mood Colouring: Instead of colouring inside the lines, ask, “What colour feels like today?” Let your hands guide the shapes.
• Draw Your Safe Space: What does calm look like? A cloud hammock? A star-covered cave or a bright hole? Draw it.
• Hand Mapping: Trace your hand and label each finger with something you’re holding emotionally today, then decorate each one.
• Art Storytelling: Draw a picture and ask, “What’s happening here?” Magic unfolds.
Art Therapy is a reminder that healing doesn’t have to be clinical. It can be messy, joyful, tearful, and glittery—all in the same sitting. It invites us to slow down and listen with our eyes and hearts. Whether you’re five or forty-five, there’s something beautifully healing about giving your feelings a page to land on.
So go on, pick up that paintbrush or crayon. Your feelings are ready to be seen.
Art Therapy is a reminder that healing doesn’t have to be clinical. It can be messy, joyful, tearful, and glittery.

A Multi-Generational Country Lifestyle
At St. John’s Village Estate in Howick, every addition enhances your way of life.
By November, our Care Centre expands with 12 new rooms, ensuring world-class support within the estate. Another new development phase launches with 27 prime plots, giving you space to build your dream. And with a modern Clubhouse under construction, alongside lifestyle amenities like walking and cycling trails, fishing dams, gardens, and the Lifestyle Centre, St. John’s is where safety, connection, and countryside charm come together.
This is more than an Estate. It’s a lifestyle made for every stage of life.
It Begins with Good Health
Trusted, affordable, and global premium health supplements you can trust
Busy lifestyles mean we don’t have as much time to dedicate to self-care. When you’re not feeling at your best, or you’ve been pushing the limits, you can rely on us for help. Our premium supplements incorporate quality ingredients needed to help support demanding lifestyles— whilst being safe and compliant with our regulatory requirements.
WHO IS GOOD HEALTH NEW ZEALAND?
Good Health has been a clean-green New Zealand premium supplement brand since 1987 and is one of Australia’s leading producers. Brand strengths are threefold:
• Excellent high-strength formulations;
• Using superior ingredient forms; and
• Pharma-grade manufacturing compliance with strict local and international standards.
Herbal medicine has been practised for thousands of years, and today’s science enables us to prove much of “old wisdom” as factually relevant. All our hero ingredients are clinically researched, meaning product claims can be substantiated. Good Health offers exciting supplement delivery forms, such as sublingual dissolving tablets, tasty
chewables, easy-mix powders and directto-mouth granular sachets and liquids, making regular supplement taking easier and more enjoyable.
Our products are formulated by our team of naturopaths, who are strong advocates for the benefits of herbs and nutraceuticals. Our production facilities hold GMP certification, the internationally recognised standard for quality manufacturing, where raw ingredients undergo rigorous scrutiny. Furthermore, our facilities operate under strict pharmaceutical protocols, overseen by pharmacists and their quality assurance teams.
SOUTH AFRICA
In 2001, the brand was launched in South Africa with our head office and distribution located in Cape Town. Our quality management team and the responsible pharmacist control our regulatory compliance and product quality. Imported products are monitored during transit to South Africa and for temperature and humidity deviations while in our storage facility, ensuring that what you buy in South Africa is the very same quality product manufactured in our New Zealand facility. All products come with an attached Patient Information
Leaflet (PIL), similar to a pharmaceutical drug, outlining safety information, cautions, and possible interactions.
SERVICE
In South Africa, we are a BEE-compliant company offering high-level, professional service to our nationwide retailers and the public. Company representatives are qualified naturopaths, homoeopaths or phytotherapists who understand the formulations and their application to the modern lifestyle. Twenty-three years on, it can be found nationally at health shops, pharmacies, Wellness Warehouse, selected Clicks, Dis-Chem and MediRite+ stores, at Faithful to Nature, or other quality online health platforms.
SATISFACTION GUARANTEE
We applaud South Africans who take the day-to-day maintenance of their health into their own hands by supplementing their diet with quality products. But it’s important to be able to identify authentic companies and trustworthy products. If you’re not happy with your purchase, for any reason, just contact us or your retailer and return it for a refund.
Let us become your supplement range of choice, and we’ll walk the path to better health together!

Windspur Estate
CRAFTING A VIBRANT FUTURE IN THE MIDLANDS
Situated on an elevated site, and only 1km from the KZN Midlands hub of Nottingham Road Village, Windspur Estate is a 14-hectare retreat that blends sustainable living with a warm sense of community. With only 34 freehold plots, this development offers a fresh take on countryside charm, inviting residents to embrace a lifestyle that’s both modern and rooted in nature.
Project Highlights & Progress: Windspur is coming to life with homes that embody “Contemporary Country” style—spacious
interiors, wide verandahs, and high ceilings that capture the region’s beauty. Over 220 trees, including Yellowwoods and Japanese Maples, have been planted, complementing existing oaks and sycamores to create a green oasis. Homes feature solar panels, energy-efficient appliances and insulation for sustainable, cost-effective living.
What’s New & What’s Next: With only five sites left to buy, the focus is on completing the remaining houses as swiftly as possible. By then, the 5,109m² clubhouse will be ready, serving as a lively hub for community events without burdening residents’ homes. Expect exercise classes, book clubs, estate meetings, cooking courses, rusk baking, craft sessions, flower arranging, and landscaping workshops. The estate also offers space and zoning for golf driving nets, kids’ play areas with equipment, and subdivisions for small studio units available for sale or rental.
Vision & Innovation: Windspur’s vision is a seamless blend of eco-conscious design and practical luxury. Architect Marita Nell’s designs use strategic roof overhangs and insulation to balance comfort and efficiency, whilst each home includes a 5kW hybrid inverter and solar geysers to keep energy costs low.
It’s a forward-thinking approach that prioritises both the environment and resident comfort.
Local Impact & Lifestyle: Windspur is boosting the local economy by creating jobs and partnering with nearby contractors. Residents enjoy easy access to excellent schools and the village’s vibrant amenities— think cosy coffee shops, bustling markets, and relaxing spas, all just a kilometre away. It’s an ideal spot for families, retirees, and remote workers seeking rural tranquillity with modern connectivity.
Behind the Build: Led by Elements
Architecture, the team carefully crafts each home to harmonise with the landscape, using smart plot orientation and natural ventilation to enhance livability.
Looking Ahead: Windspur is poised to grow while staying true to its core—space, sustainability, and community. With new amenities and ongoing eco-innovations on the horizon, this estate is shaping up to be a cherished cornerstone of the Midlands, offering a lifestyle that’s as inspiring as the views.
Concealed in the heart of the picturesque Balgowan Valley, Annandale Country Estate is the newest jewel in the Collins Residential portfolio—and it’s already capturing the imagination of locals and future homeowners alike. This exclusive development is a tribute to heritage, community, and the enduring charm of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
Spanning 14 hectares and just moments from the iconic Michaelhouse school, Annandale Country Estate offers only 12 exclusive residential stands, each thoughtfully positioned to embrace the serenity of the landscape. From here, sweeping vistas take in the historic Michaelhouse buildings and manicured grounds, stretching across the valley towards Nottingham Road. At the heart of the estate stands the lovingly restored 130-year-old farmhouse—a tangible link to the past, preserved to tell its story for years to come. This historic building will share the estate with a boutique country guesthouse, offering visitors an opportunity to immerse
themselves in the tranquillity and warm hospitality of the Midlands.
Beyond its architectural beauty, the project promises a lifestyle deeply connected to nature, community, and history. From morning walks through mist-kissed pastures to afternoons exploring the artisanal food and craft offerings of the surrounding Midlands Meander, life here will be as peaceful as it is inspiring. The restoration of the farmhouse has been a labour
of love, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern building techniques to ensure structural integrity without losing the authentic Midlands character. Original stonework, timber features, and heritage detailing have been retained, while discreet updates bring the comfort and efficiency expected in a contemporary country estate.
Special care has been taken to integrate the estate’s built environment into its natural surroundings, using indigenous planting, eco-sensitive stormwater systems, and architectural guidelines that ensure every home complements the landscape.
As construction progresses, locals are witnessing a legacy in motion, and the excitement builds for the way Annandale will weave itself into the fabric of local life. For those seeking a home where heritage meets modern country living, Annandale Country Estate invites you to be part of something truly special.

The Avenues Estate
ROOTED IN HERITAGE, BUILT FOR GENERATIONS
Nestled in the heart of Hilton, where leafy lanes meet landmark schools and family values run deep, The Avenues Estate is more than just a residential development; it’s a continuation of a proud legacy, thoughtfully crafted to honour the spirit of the Midlands, while opening a vibrant new chapter for families to write their own stories.
“There’s a real sense of grounding here—of heritage, of education, and of a wholesome upbringing that stays with you for life,” says James Ross, fifth-generation executive at JT Ross Property Group and developer of The Avenues Estate.
From its inception, the estate has drawn inspiration from the rich community fabric
that defines Hilton—a town, he says, “that raises children well.” James knows this first-hand. As a third-generation Hilton College old boy, his connection to the area runs deep—rooted not only in personal experience, but in generations of family legacy. JT Ross Property Group, founded by James’ great-great-grandfather more than 120 years ago, has stood the test of time. Its commitment to sustainable, longlasting developments continues to define the company’s work today. “This project is personal,” James shares.
“It’s about creating something that contributes meaningfully to a town that has given so much to our family—and so many others.”
That deep respect for legacy is etched into every corner of The Avenues Estate. With architectural integrity, prime positioning alongside top-tier schools, and landscaped green spaces that invite community connection, the estate captures the essence of Hilton’s timeless charm—while offering a secure, modern lifestyle for today’s families. “The Avenues Estate is where new memories are made, but it’s also a place that feels instantly familiar,” adds James. “It’s where parents can raise children in the kind of environment that shaped them. That’s what makes this project so special.”
Developed with purpose. Rooted in tradition. Designed for the future.
The Avenues Estate stands as a heartfelt tribute to Hilton’s enduring appeal—and a promise to families looking for a place to truly belong.

MISSION TO MARS
WORDS ALICIA DU PLESSIS
One of our very own local students has achieved an out-of-this-world honour, representing South Africa at the prestigious United Space School at NASA in Houston, USA. What an accomplishment!
William Segar, a Grade 11 pupil at Hilton College High School, was recently selected to take part in the United Space School programme hosted by FISE (Foundation of International Space Education) at the University of Houston Clear Lake and the NASA Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas. The programme ran for two weeks in July, and he was one of 42 students selected from 25 countries worldwide, on an invitationonly basis. Alongside William was Mukondi Sinugo, a Grade 12 pupil from Uitsig High School in The Reeds, Centurion, Gauteng, also proudly representing South Africa.
Physical Science, along with which, they need to be passionate about space-related sciences and activities. They are also required to complete several preparatory assignments before they arrive in Houston. William’s application included a written application with short questions, one essay, and an interview.
The United Space School is an interdisciplinary programme that runs annually and selects high school pupils between the ages of 16 and 18 from participating countries. The pupils are selected based on their proficiency and skill in subjects like Mathematics and
He was already an avid student of Mathematics, Physics, and Economics and learned about the programme from previous candidates. “I found out about the United Space School programme through two Hilton boys who were selected and gave talks in previous years. This inspired me to apply,” he shared. While there, he was graciously hosted by a family connected with NASA and the United Space School.
During the programme, the candidates were grouped into several teams, each responsible for the planning, designing, and building of a simulated mission to Mars,
which is the Space School’s theme: “A Manned Mission to Mars”. The teams were namely Blue (design the mission science objectives and support equipment), Green (design the Mars surface habitat and keeping the crew healthy and performing), Red (design the transit vehicle, which will transport the crew and mission systems), Yellow (manage mission control and the budget), and Maroon (design the system that will cycle the crew and mission systems between the transit vehicle and Martian surface).
thermal controls, and numerous other topics. My focus was on emergency systems during landing and launch, but as a team, everyone shifted and collaborated, so we all spent time on every aspect,” shared William. While their project received positive results, they also faced challenging questions, one concerning the simulated mission to Mars set 15 years in the future and how technologies might have evolved and adapted by that time. Alongside working on their projects, they also attended lectures and presentations on a variety
The teams got to work with various professionals in their fields, from astronauts, engineers, and scientists, all currently involved in space exploration.
“I was on the Maroon Team, which was responsible for landing, takeoff, and cargo handling while on Mars. We had to balance real-world engineering constraints, legal and financial limitations, and human factors revolving around our landing and launch systems,
Learning from some of the best in their fields. A few of the topics that were part of the space education programme included Life Support and Environmental Systems, Long Endurance Spaceflight, Medical Care during Spaceflight, Physiological Effects on the Human Body in a Weightlessness Environment, Plasma Propulsion Rocketry, Psychological Factors in Long Duration Spaceflight, and Space Business
and Law.
He recalls one particular “eye-opening” talk by astronaut Sunita Williams, who shared more about life and work on the International Space Station, and dealing with aspects of mental health and hygiene. On a final note, William shared with us how enriching the experience was for him and how much he learned from it: “Being in such an intellectually intense environment with interesting, driven people from all around the world, who have such diverse perspectives to offer, broadened my horizons and inspired me immensely. Discussing journeys and goals with the other students, I was opened up to a variety of experiences and aspirations which I had not previously considered for myself. Now more than ever, I am aiming to go abroad for my further studies, where I could be exposed to unique opportunities, and continue to immerse myself in different parts of the world. Regarding what exactly I wish to study, I am still considering an array of options, which this programme has added to.”
This has been a remarkable achievement, not only for William, his family and school, but for our Midlands community, which continues to reach for the stars, or in this case, Mars!
Fun Facts:
• A day on Mars is only 40 minutes longer than a day on Earth.
• Mars has blue sunsets and orange skies—the opposite of Earth.
• Olympus Mons, on Mars, is the biggest volcano in the solar system.

YOUR SPACE Spruce Up
If your interiors are feeling a little lacklustre, read below for some tips, tricks, and trends from one of our local décor store owners.
WORDS ALICIA DU PLESSIS
We asked Hannah Keppler, owner of The Ruby Orchard in Howick, for her recommendations on seasonal décor tips and tricks. But if that’s not really your focus, there are also a few more timeless trends you can incorporate in your interior spaces. With over a decade in the running, The Ruby Orchard is a haven specialising in homeware, décor, reclaimed furniture, and gifts. From salvaged to spruced, you can find servers, mirrors, picture frames, side tables, all handmade from old beams and floorboards. Hannah has worked closely with interior decorators and designconscious customers, which has allowed her to keep her hand on the pulse of what’s on trend, what sells, and mostly, as she shared, “what helps turn a house into a home”. Here are just a few for you to give a try and play around with:
What is the importance of keeping with seasonal themes in one's home décor?
It’s really about creating a sense of rhythm and renewal in your home by simply refreshing and reimagining the pieces you already own.
Small changes can make a big impact. In spring and summer, you might bring out vintage jugs or oversized glass vases filled with fresh flowers, swap in light linens or a cheerful table runner, and opt for crisp white bedding to reflect the
season’s brightness. Come autumn and winter, it’s all about layering—introducing heavier throws, quilts, and blankets, and shifting your display pieces to include mellow tones like terracotta, antique brass, and copper. These subtle seasonal updates help your space feel refreshed and personal, allowing your home to evolve naturally throughout the year.
Let’s talk spring/summer: what are some of the top trends in the interior decorating space?
This spring and summer, think airy cottage vibes, layered vintage pieces, and lots of natural texture. I am loving vintage botanical prints and soft florals, especially in artwork on a throw or pillows. Light wood accents and wicker always bring in cosiness and texture.
If you are looking to freshen up your space this summer, swap out heavy textiles for light, breathable ones, bring in vintage or antique-inspired furniture and ceramics, and add fresh greenery like potted herbs or wildflower bouquets in rustic vases and antique pots.
What colours or textures are in right now?
Thoughtful use of colour and texture can transform a space with warmth and personality. Soft greens, olive, blush pinks, nudes, and terracotta add charm across rooms. Start with a neutral base, like creamy whites or beiges.
Layer in textures—linen cushions, natural wood, and vintage elements—to create depth. Incorporate soft, earthy tones in fabrics, mix in open wooden shelving or freestanding vintage pieces, and use tactile accents like stonewashed bedding, jute rugs, or aged furniture to enhance character and comfort throughout the home.
Beyond seasonal decorating: what are timeless items or ideas?
Timeless pieces are truly at the heart of what we do at The Ruby Orchard. Our style leans toward a cottage-country-vintage aesthetic, and we have a particular love for antique and reclaimed wood furniture. These pieces bring lasting warmth, character, and soul to any space, no matter the season.
In recent years, we’ve also seen a growing trend toward open shelving and glass display cabinets, which we believe are here to stay. They offer a beautiful and functional way to showcase your personality through thoughtfully-styled
ceramics, glassware, heirlooms, books, and antique finds. These elements add depth and storytelling to your home in a way that always feels current and personal.
Zhuzhing up your space doesn’t have to break the bank, nor does it have to be a radical redo. Focusing on just a few simple changes can make all the difference in your home. So with that, which room are you going to start on first?

We are proud to celebrate a few milestones achieved by our local businesses this year. Learn more about what the decades have taught them and continue to shape them to serve our community.
COFFEEBERRY
THE WINE CELLAR
MUIRHEADS
COFFEEBERRY CON MALHERBE 20 YEARS
The Beginning
The inspiration behind Coffeeberry was born when I applied to the thenCascades landlord, Old Mutual, to take over the premises of Icy Cool, a longstanding ice cream parlour and coffee shop that had closed down. Old Mutual required a business plan, which proved challenging until I discovered the first Coffeeberry in Uvongo on the South Coast in 2004. It was there that I met the founder, Deon Mastenbroek, who helped me develop the concept that ultimately won the approval of Old Mutual. Deon moved on from the brand a few years later and gave us his blessing to register Coffeeberry in our name, marking the beginning of our journey with the brand. This was my first real “passion project,” which, with my wife Sue, I’ve worked really hard on. We proudly celebrated our 20th birthday recently—a milestone for this local family restaurant brand.
Core Values
It has always been about engaging with people, staff, customers, and service providers—from within the community and further afield, to
create spaces where people can meet in a relaxed and friendly environment.
Overcoming Challenges
We’ve experienced extreme highs and lows over the years, but luckily, many more highs than lows. Some of the challenges have come during slow economic times, where we’ve had to literally “throw some cargo overboard” to keep the ships afloat. This took the form of offloading a few slow property investments and cashing in some of our retirement annuity policies to get us through the pandemic!
Lessons Learned
Definitely to STAY FOCUSED. I had a sign up in my office for many years telling me this. The biggest lesson of them all came in November 2020, when I received a life-changing diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma (bone marrow cancer). Thanks to my credibility, family, staff, community support, and medical team, I was able to focus on overcoming the disease. After a stem cell transplant in May 2023, I’ve been blessed with good health, and I am grateful for being given a second chance to enjoy the fruits of my labour.
Memorable Experiences
We were the closest coffee shop to the first Mountain Bike World Championships in Africa. Hosting many notable people for True Story Tuesdays, like Imtiaz Sooliman, the founder of Gift of the Givers, Phil Liggett, the legendary Tour de France commentator, Gregg Minnaar, a multiple world champion downhill athlete, and Martin Dreyer, Dusi legend.
Staying Ahead in the Ever-Changing Industry
We engage with the local community often, listen to our customers, change the menu from time to time, and are open to change.
A Signature Dish
Our pancakes, both savoury and sweet. Something that differentiates us from the rest is our legendary giant gourmet pancakes.
The Next Chapter
My vision for the next few years is to see Coffeeberry thrive under the leadership of my son, Mark, and operations manager, Bradley Meyer, and see us celebrate the next 20-year milestone in 2045. Meanwhile, Sue and I will focus on expanding our unique Coffeebox DriveThru concept, and then travel.
THE WINE CELLAR MARGARET SPOWART 29 YEARS
The Beginning
After selling our previous business in the fuel industry, we took a muchneeded break to the Cape. One morning, we had a wine tasting at the Van Loveren Family Vineyards in Robertson, in their beautiful garden setting, when their gran came out offering us freshly made sweetcorn fritters. We both thought this was an amazing experience, and Margie said, “We could offer something similar in the Midlands”. After acquiring Langley Park in Rosetta, we negotiated with the Liquor Authorities and local wine farms and opened our doors in 1996.
The Motivation Behind Our Business
Our friends enjoyed the different wines and stories we brought back from our travels. We realised there was a gap in the market and there were no other wine speciality stores in KZN, 1994/5. The wine makers commented that Natal was not a wine-drinking area. Being young, we said, “Well, we will teach them”.
Core Values
To offer a unique experience and to help grow the wine industry in SA. Sharing our knowledge and love of our wines. We enjoy pairing food and wine. In our business, we have always appreciated customer interaction, and many of our customers have become friends. There's no greater reward than seeing customers return, many in the past 30 years.
Overcoming Challenges
In 2022, a tornado tore through our area, bringing down several huge pine trees that crashed through the centre of our shop, damaging the toilet and kitchen areas, and destroying the boma. That evening, as we surveyed the damage, we thought our season had come to an end, but thanks to our close community, that same evening, stock was removed from the damaged part of the shop. The
next morning, we noticed bakkies, tractors, chainsaws and staff, even breakfast waiting at the gate. The bulk of the trees were removed from the buildings, undamaged racks and stock were set up at the top of the shop, and business continued.
Lessons Learned
The future has no guarantees. Treat everyone with honesty, kindness, and respect. Live each day to the fullest. You have to adapt to the time and see the solution, not the problem.
Memorable Experiences
Every day brings new memories— all the interesting people we meet, from customers to winemakers and celebrities who are so open to sharing their stories.
Timeless Advice for Lasting Success
Passion is the only advice. Passion for people, from our suppliers to customers, and a passion for your product. Even the smallest sale should be seen as an opportunity and an important sale.
The Next Chapter
Sarah, our late daughter, had been working through a Canadian university, and they suggested we look at planting a grape variety, Chambourcin. They felt it would do well in Rosetta’s low winter temperature. We have just had our first harvest and feel very positive, but we will wait to see what the future brings. www.thewinecellar.co.za
The Beginning
My late dad, Bernard, bought this hiring company in 1996 and was excited about the prospect of owning his own business after working in the banking industry for so many years. Dawn, my mom, now retired, joined him after selling her shares in her Home Industry shop that she had run with her sister, Home Sweet Home. Working with family was an easy transition, as we share a passion for hospitality, making this combination a recipe for success.
The Motivation Behind Our Business
My dad wanted his own small business so he could escape the hustle and bustle of the corporate world. He had organised many bowls tournaments and all associated events for many years, so planning and organising events was in his blood.
Core Values
Customer service and excellence have always been the cornerstone of the business. As a family-run business, we've always been a place where customers can come to know that
they'll receive advice and care as if they're part of the family. We have always treated staff and customers as though they were part of the Muirhead family.
Overcoming Challenges
The biggest challenge was the pandemic, but we have an amazing team and incredible customers. We walked the road, did our best to keep our team together, while serving our community.
Memorable Experiences
I remember working with my dad on the opening of Hulamin, where
we catered to 500 people a day for both lunch and dinner, over two consecutive weekends. Through the years, we've had the honour of being involved in numerous local businesses, government initiatives, and special occasions—from milestone birthdays and weddings to engagement parties, baby showers, and, with respect, funerals. Our customers truly become like family to us, given the depth of our involvement in these moments.
Lessons Learned
In hospitality, you never know when you're going to get a curveball, so we try to be ahead of our game, ready to face any challenges that come our way. Open communication with staff and customers is the core of it all. If we understand each other, we can get it right!
Staying Ahead in the Ever-Changing Industry
We observe what's happening around the world because we know our brides will start asking for those items. This means we have to continually invest in new products, the latest colour trends for fabrics and different types of furniture. Sometimes, we're asked to do things we've not done before, so we’re learning all the time.
Timeless Advice for Lasting Success
A business cannot run on its own; it is only with our dedicated team that works together that we can produce the goods for our loyal customers.
The Next Chapter
We are looking forward to growing our draping, lighting, and décor division with on-site setups and floral design. We have found that our customers have less time available to them, and so we need to make planning events as easy as possible! We have some exciting news that we will release soon, so watch this space.

Creating a Reading Nation
WORDS ALICIA DU PLESSIS
Meet one of our local authors and teachers who started her own publishing company to encourage the love of reading amongst our youth.
Nokuphiwe Nala is a Foundation Phase teacher and author with a vision to bring the love of books and reading to as many children as possible. According to statistics from the Department of Education, there has been a decrease in the number of children who can read for enjoyment or meaning. During Nokuphiwe’s years as a teacher, she has witnessed a decline in children's love of reading, including proficiency in reading. She aims to improve this one book at a time through her self-publishing
business PhiweNala Publishers, which she opened in 2023 with her first book titled Stop Bullying My Afro
Tommy the Yellow Tippy Truck, has sold over 50 copies thus far, and many relate to its story.
It touches on topics such as selfacceptance, being unique, embracing our differences and strengths, and feelings of being the odd one out, which can be a painful experience for young children when they are around their peers or bullied. “When doing school readings, they always want me to repeat the story, and they enjoy the ending,” shared Nokuphiwe. The Department of Basic Education aims to ensure all children will be able to read for understanding by 2030, which is why fostering reading skills in the Foundation Phase is so vital. With six children’s books published so far, one being a short story, Nokuphiwe is a proud contributor to making this goal a reality. She has partnered with Inchanga, Hillcrest, and Bessie Head libraries. She has also been working with various schools to have her books included in their curriculum. She aims to make her books as widely available as possible across more local establishments, including offering them as eBooks to accommodate many children who use their phones.
For more information on where to find and order her books, she can be contacted via the email below.
She saw a gap in the market and wanted to publish children’s books that were easy to relate to and that would cultivate a passion for reading amongst learners. “We need a reading nation in our communities, who will later contribute to our country's economy,” she shared. Most of her books explore themes around selfawareness and developing selfesteem. One of her recent books, nokuphiwen@gmail.com

WORDS ALICIA DU PLESSIS
Did you know the Midlands proudly hosts one of South Africa’s five largest rose societies? Known as the Midlands Rose Society, its roots were established in 1987 by Norman and Val Yeats from the comforts of their nursery, Spurwing Roses, in the Albert Falls area.
Norman was the Chairman and Val the Secretary, and made Spurwing the base for Midlands meetings until 1990, when they moved to Pietermaritzburg. Along with other members were Anne Cadman, and 22 people who also became members representing areas like Underberg, Albert Falls, Otto’s Bluff, Estcourt, and Eston. Currently, there are over 190 members.
sides. “Over these last eight years, we have collected over 145 different varieties from all over the country, and we have quite a few roses planted that we call ‘Found Roses’. These roses still need to be identified. We are always on the lookout for heritage roses and swap cuttings with other heritage gardens in Bedford and Cape Town, as well as others interested in these old beauties. We are proud of our rose garden, and we hope it will bring joy to our members and to all who visit it in the future,” shared Gail. From their inception in 1987 to the present, the Midlands Rose Society has always been focused on teaching as many people about roses as they can. “In the words of a past chairperson, Thelma Austin-Smith, ‘We are not an elitist organisation, but we are here to learn, we give and share ideas’. It is wonderful to meet with other people who love roses, who give tips and have words of wisdom to share,” said Gail Birss, the current chairperson.
The Midlands Rose Society wishes to share that growing roses is not as difficult as it seems. The rewards of picking your own roses, smelling their sweet perfumes, and decorating your home with them far outweigh any efforts required to plant and maintain them. The Midlands climate is ideal for growing roses because it provides sufficient rainfall during the growing season and ample cold winters for dormancy, allowing the plants to thrive. The most common roses you will find here are the Knock Out and Iceberg varieties, but members grow and cultivate a wide range of types. The Midlands Rose Society will be hosting its third convention in October this year, named “More Magic in the Midlands”. Sushil Prakash, the President of the World Federation of Rose Societies, will be travelling from India to join the convention, which is a great honour for all the Rose Societies.
The growth of the Society can be attributed to the members’ public appearances, such as the Sunday Tribune Garden Show, where they became well-known. Established in 1998, their rose stands have won gold medals and the Best in Show award. The society has also hosted a Rose Show for several years, with recent events taking place at Blackwoods Home of Gardening at The Avenues in Hilton. Additionally, they hosted two ROSA National Conventions. One was in 2006, called “A Rose Affair”, which was in conjunction with the Sunday Tribune Garden Show, and another in 2014 with the theme “The Mystery Magical Midlands Tour” in Hilton. In 2017, Gail Birss, Gill Wilson, and Jackie Kalley founded the Heritage Rose Garden at Garlington Estate in Hilton, with a mission to collect and preserve historic Old Garden Roses. The beautifully designed garden features wheelchair-accessible paths, allowing all visitors to stroll and admire the roses from all midlandsrosesociety@gmail.com
There will also be a Speaker’s Morning with Sally Earl, Sandra Trethewey, and Tanya Visser as the guest speakers, where members and the public will be able to attend. Anyone can join the Society, from younger members to older ones, men and women, and from newbies to experts. Members gain exclusive access to various specials, garden visits, and more (Annual membership is R150). If you’re not a rose fundi but appreciate their beauty and would like to get more involved or attend any of the functions, be sure to find out more about the Midlands Rose Society. We leave you with some rosy inspiration:

Designing your dream home can be thrilling, but what if you want a space that truly stands the test of time?
Amanda Kelly, Head Residential Interior Designer at Tracy Kelly Design, says the ‘gin stool’ is her go-to piece for adding charm to a room. Small but full of character, it sits perfectly beside an antique chair, sofa, or even a bath. Its ease of movement creates height and visual interest while filling those awkward little gaps in the space.
She truly believes lamps can transform a space. The secret? Always choose a soft white bulb to create a cosy, inviting atmosphere.
For a timeless colour scheme, she says a neutral palette is the perfect base. Soft off-whites, gentle creams, and muted greens create a warm, enveloping atmosphere. Colour drenching these tones ensures harmony, making the space effortlessly elegant.
And to elevate your space, a beautiful artwork instantly makes a statement, drawing the eye and anchoring the room. For a tactile alternative, consider wall art with texture, such as woven grass baskets or wall panelling, to bring depth and layering without committing to wallpaper.

RETREAT A CHARMING
WORDS LORINDA SCOTT
Experience the ultimate in relaxation and hospitality at La Clef Boutique Hotel (pronounced “lah cle”)
La Clef is one of those places where you turn a corner and suddenly paradise is in front of you. Nestled in Balgowan, in the heart of the Midlands, it reveals itself as a true hidden gem. We were immediately struck by its beauty and charm when we first arrived.
From the minute we walked in, we felt thoroughly at home. We were greeted by Londiwe at the door, and right away, she was a friendly face that we knew would make the weekend a good one.
Professional and light-hearted was the perfect combination of hospitality.
We settled in quickly and just took in the scenery - what a beautiful, peaceful place. We poured ourselves a glass of sherry and sat on the steps, chatting as we watched the sunset. We had arranged for dinner to be served, and loved that there were three options for dinner, catering to our various food needs. After dinner, we spent the evening playing games in the lounge area over coffee - it was
a lot of fun and real quality time with the family! At this point, we had slowed down, put the work week behind us, and had embraced the Midlands’ slower pace fully.
Refreshed by a good night’s sleep and the crisp Midlands’ air, we enjoyed a fabulous breakfast that hit all the spots. Perfectly satisfied, we then set out to explore the region - La Clef is actually the perfect midway to everything. We were super excited to get back “home” after a full day out.
We relaxed a bit and then went on to play Boules outside - again, another perfect way to end the day, and we literally played until sunset. We then got ready for dinner, sat and chatted to the new owners, and were struck by their passion for the area and the warmth of their welcome. They had leapt at the chance to make La Clef their own, with dreams of one day expanding into a wedding venue, but for now they are focused on letting guests and friends share in its beauty and charm, something you feel is part of the very character of the venue.
The second morning started with a leisurely walk around the property, and we were surprised at how big it actually is. La Clef is a farm-style boutique hotel with six rooms, each
accommodating a maximum of two people, and a cottage with two rooms that can accommodate a maximum of four guests sharing; it overlooks the Midlands landscape, too, creating a picturesque setting. Whether you’re a family looking for a relaxing break, a business traveller seeking a convenient retreat, or a couple planning a romantic weekend getaway or intimate wedding, La Clef is an excellent choice.
We had the perfect, most relaxed, all boxes ticked kind of weekend. Londiwe literally said yes to our every request (including a takeaway banana bread on checkout). We will definitely be back!

3. Next up, we stopped at the Epic Karting Midlands - that was super fun and we LOVED that it was outdoors - a first, and everyone loved the racing.
4. We then stopped at Tsonga, a leather store, and chatted with the team there. It’s an awesome local spot that has made their mark internationally, too! WOW!
5. The next day, on the way home, we stopped at Bluebird Café in Howick and thoroughly enjoyed overindulging in their various coffees - it was the PERFECT way to end the PERFECT Midlands weekend!
Spring into Hormonal Health
WORDS KAZ WILSON
As the days grow longer and warmer, our bodies naturally crave the rejuvenating energy of spring. This season offers an ideal opportunity to revitalise your hormonal health through seasonal and locally grown foods. Eating as per the season not only ensures you’re consuming fresher, more flavourful produce, but it also allows your body to absorb richer nutrients essential in maintaining hormonal balance.
Seasonal vegetables and fruits such as asparagus, rhubarb, and leafy greens burst with antioxidants. These powerful compounds combat oxidative stress, a key contributor to hormonal imbalances. By reducing oxidative stress, antioxidants support the functionality of hormones and protect your body from various health issues. Incorporating these vibrant foods into your diet can significantly contribute to your overall wellbeing.
Liver health plays a vital role in regulating hormones. Our liver is responsible for processing and detoxifying hormones, and when it is overloaded with toxins or unhealthy fats, hormonal imbalances can ensue. An efficient liver is crucial for keeping hormones in check, breaking down excess hormones, and facilitating their excretion. By supporting liver health, you effectively promote better hormonal balance and overall longevity.
Several foods and herbs can enhance liver function and support detoxification. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower contain compounds that promote natural detox processes. Incorporating beets, which are rich in antioxidants and betaine, can aid in liver function. Herbs such as milk thistle and dandelion root also facilitate detoxification, clearing out harmful substances while nurturing the liver.
Another effective strategy for achieving hormonal balance is seed cycling. This holistic approach involves rotating specific seeds throughout the menstrual cycle (flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds in the first half, followed by sesame and sunflower seeds in the second half).
Seed cycling helps regulate oestrogen and progesterone levels, contributing to hormonal stability.
Actionable Tips for Spring Hormonal Health:
• Focus on Seasonal Foods: Prioritise local produce such as asparagus, strawberries, and leafy greens that pack antioxidants for hormonal support.
• Support Liver Health: Incorporate cruciferous vegetables, beets, and detox-supporting herbs like milk thistle into your meals.
• Try Seed Cycling: Use flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds in the follicular phase, followed by sesame and sunflower seeds in the luteal phase.
• Stay Hydrated: Adequate hydration helps the liver flush out toxins efficiently, supporting overall hormonal health.
• Limit Processed Foods: Minimise intake of processed and high-sugar foods that can burden the liver and disrupt hormonal balance.
This spring, nourish your body with nature’s bounty while fostering a harmonious balance within. Your journey to hormonal health begins with the foods you choose!

WORDS TIM JOHNSON
We’ve all felt it, that strange, heavy pause between knowing what we want to do and actually doing it. It’s called procrastination, and while it can be perceived as indecision or disorganisation, it’s usually something deeper. At its heart, procrastination is the tension between intention and action, the uncomfortable space between who we are and who we hope to be. And in that space, fear loves to lurk. Not always fear of doing, but fear of failing.
When we launched Carlyle College, it wasn’t because we had all the answers. Far from it. It was because we had a vision, a gut-level sense that education could be more human, more creative, more connected. There were plenty of reasons to delay. The timing wasn’t “perfect.” We didn’t have a big safety net. The to-do list was longer than the N3. But once we moved, momentum followed. That first step, however uncertain, created a new reality.
And the same thing happened when we stepped away from a well-known national real estate brand to start Local Real Estate. On paper, it was risky. We were leaving behind the comfort of something established. But deep down, we knew we had a different kind of business in us, one rooted in community, relationship, and authenticity. Not just houses and sales targets, but people and stories. It was hard, humbling work, but it’s amazing how quickly something gains traction once you stop just thinking about it and actually begin.
The psychology is simple. Procrastination isn’t a time management issue; it’s emotional. It’s fear in a clever disguise. We don’t wait because we’re lazy. We wait because we care. We want it to be great. We
want the idea to succeed. We want to protect it. But ironically, nothing kills a good idea faster than waiting for the perfect time. Here’s the kicker. Failure is not something to be avoided; it’s the path to progress. It’s the bridge between dreaming and doing. It’s what sharpens the edges and teaches you what works. You don’t get the perfect version first; you get the real one. You learn, you refine, and suddenly, the “impossible” feels surprisingly close.
It’s like that strange magic that happens when you finally clean out the garage; suddenly, you’re painting walls and building shelves. Action leads to more action, and sometimes the act of beginning, however awkward or imperfect, is what unlocks everything. Both Carlyle College and Local Real Estate are proof of that. We didn’t arrive fully formed. We started, stumbled, learned, and are growing. Not because we were fearless, but because we didn’t let fear have the final say.
So, if you’ve got something brewing, an idea, a project, a dream, don’t wait for the stars to align. Step into the unknown, fail a little, adjust, but keep going. Because action, not thought, is the foundation of transformation.
And the truth is, the gap between where you are and where you want to be isn’t nearly as wide as you think. It just takes one move to start closing it.
Failure is not the thing to be avoided, it’s the path to progress. It’s the bridge between dreaming and doing
