INOTE EDITOR'S

recently had to sort through tens of thousands of photos stored on my Google Drive. Sounds dramatic, I know, but it turned out to be an oddly reflective exercise. As I scrolled (and scrolled), selected, deleted, saved, and smiled my way through the mountain of images, I couldn’t help but think about the time we live in—a time of abundance. We’re surrounded by so much, and in that overflow, we sometimes lose sight of the real value or beauty in things. Like moments. Like memories. A few weeks before, Lorinda received a digital photo frame for Mother’s Day—the kind to which each of the kids can send pictures, no matter where in the world they are. It’s changed the way we look at photos. We’re finding something beautifully intentional about it. Every photo that appears tells a story from one of their points of view, often of moments we didn’t witness ourselves or experienced from a totally different perspective. There are so many happy or fun pics, some carry a sadness but only for moments past, but all of them bring a wonderful connection.

And perhaps the biggest thing I noticed in all of this—the best photos aren’t the ones we pose for. They’re the unplanned, messy, or blurry ones that seem so special. They’re the stolen moments. The ones that somehow capture the essence of a place, the unspoken joy on a face, or the memory of something uneventful but meaningful. I also took a moment to remember flipping through my Mom’s photo albums—there aren’t too many at all—and how each photo seemed to carry a little more weight. Maybe because film and printing came at a cost back then, or maybe because we gave photos a little more reverence—I’m not sure

why. I just remember there weren’t too many pics to rekindle old memories and so I found myself wanting more but thinking a mountain in Google Drive is just too much. Of course, life has moved on, and I love that we can capture more now. But like so many things, I’ve come to realise that less truly is more. It’s the act of choosing—of slowing down long enough to see what matters—that gives those captured moments their real weight. The magic isn’t in the quantity; it’s in what we choose to hold onto, to look at again, to share. And that same thinking carries through in how we shape this magazine.

I love that it isn’t an endless feed of quick stories flicked past and curated by an algorithm. It’s a collection of intentional, crafted pieces that invite us to pause and step into the world of others. In this edition, you’ll meet women who’ve faced life with fierce grace in ‘Unapologetically Her’, discover healing in unexpected ways through ‘A Healer’s Journey’, be reminded of quiet strength in ‘Fireside Chats’, and feel the pulse of our community in ‘1000 Paws Walk’.

We hope this issue brings you both joy and reflection—and maybe even reminds you to capture the ordinary, too.

Till the next edition, God Bless

A Once In A Lifetime Investment Opportunity

Ateam comprising of experienced and dedicated professionals with a passion for the stock market, Fenestra Asset Management’s investment philosophy considers both the growth and value styles of investing.

Fenestra structures and manages specialist share portfolios both locally and offshore. Their competitive fee structure also enhances client returns.

The generation AI market size was estimated at US $13 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow at a compound rate (CAGR) of 36.5% from 2024 to 2030. AI companies are growing rapidly, several at over 100 per cent annually and there is a huge appetite for these stocks from investors. This is a very disruptive technology with so many opportunities. It’s a game changer, offering investors a rare chance to capitalise on transformative technology and opportunities abound in the established AI giants, AI-centric ETFs, and innovative startups. Cloud computing giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google

are major players in AI and investing in cloud platforms is mission critical and many companies will benefit.

What exactly is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a set of technologies that enable computers to perform a variety of advanced functions. The goal for AI is to be able to do things such as recognise patterns, make decisions, and judge like humans.

What does it do?

It reduces human error, increases efficiency, performs advanced data analysis, makes new inventions, personalises your files, and organises workflow and much more.

Where to invest?

Nvidia (a key innovator of computer graphics and AI technology in California. Their invention of the GPU in 1999 sparked the growth of the PC gaming market, redefined computer graphics, and ignited the era of modern AI), which is up to 230% in the past year. Fenestra has identified

other companies like SMCI (Super Micro Computer Inc) and ARM Holdings on the periphery and mainstream AI that are all set to profit from this trend.

The Mission

Fenestra strives to be a great South African and international specialist investment group. They are driven by a passion for outstanding performance and an unwavering commitment to their philosophies and core values.

Final Tee Off

The Notties community united to host a benefit golf day for Phil Simmons. Phil experienced health issues last year, which resulted in his decision to retire to Johannesburg with his family. One hundred and eight golfers tackled the upgraded 18-hole golf course at Gowrie in great weather. Dinner and an auction followed the golf, giving Phil the send-off he deserved.

Seeing Beauty in the InBetween

If you’ve ever wandered through a forest in the late afternoon, you would have seen how the light dances with the air. What seemed to be nothing more than dust suddenly becomes a shimmering thread of presence. What if we could learn to dwell in that shimmer?

Life isn’t about fixing or mending. It’s not about defining or categorising. It’s about honouring the whole human, seeing beyond the labels we so quickly assign: beyond diagnosis, beyond recovery, beyond what society names as ‘broken’.

Beauty is not something to be found out there. It’s something that becomes—slowly, inwardly and outwardly—when we stop striving and start truly seeing. John O’Donohue writes that “beauty is that in the presence of which we feel more alive.” For the people we walk with—and for ourselves—beauty is rarely loud. It shows itself between the moments: in a hesitant smile, a breath taken with intention, the quiet courage to try again.

Eckhart Tolle speaks of a gentle dropping away—the release of stories and identities, a soft peeling back of “I am this” or “I am that”—until only “I am” remains. No striving. No definition. Just presence. And when we meet someone there, not as a condition or a case, but as a soul, something beautiful stirs. A stillness. A knowing. You are here. And that is enough.

When someone who has endured trauma begins to see themselves not as a shadow of who they were, but as someone becoming something new, something whole—that is beauty. When a person who can no longer speak in the way they once did finds another way to connect—and we meet them there—that, too, is beauty. Not inspiration. Not sentiment. Just the raw, unfolding truth of being.

But beauty isn’t always comfortable. It asks us to release our grip on certainty. We can retreat, defend our egos, and make the world a landscape of rights and wrongs. Or we can open our hands. We can live as though this life is a gift, not earned, not guaranteed, but given.

And when we do, something shifts. We begin to see between the things we’ve always looked at. The in-between spaces—of uncertainty, of vulnerability, of silence—begin to shimmer. And those we might once have overlooked, who we once considered ‘dust’, suddenly shine.

When someone who has endured trauma begins to see themselves not as a shadow of who they were, but as someone becoming something new, something whole—that is beauty

WE VALUE COMMUNITY

INSIDE FINE & COUNTRY KZN MIDLANDS

Luxury is more than a label—it’s a lived experience shaped by passion, precision, and personal commitment. Owned and operated by Andrew and Liesel Norton, the Fine & Country KZN Midlands office is a standout in South Africa’s prestigious property sector. With an unrelenting obsession for real estate and a deep understanding of what it means to own, manage, and grow property portfolios, the Nortons have built a brand that is synonymous with excellence.

A Team Set Apart

Fine & Country Midlands is powered by a handpicked team of rental, sales, and mortgage specialists who are not only skilled—they’re purpose-driven. Under the guidance of Principal Andrew Norton, the agency thrives on delivering premium service to every buyer, seller, and landlord. Liesel Norton, who heads up the thriving rental division, brings both heart and hands-on experience as a seasoned landlord. Together, they lead a boutique operation that feels anything but small. Their approach? Be utterly obsessed with delivering value—because every client, every deal, and every detail matters.

Defining ‘Premium Property’ in the Midlands

In the Midlands, a “premium property” is not simply defined by price—it's the lifestyle it unlocks. Whether it's a country estate nestled amongst rolling hills or a modern home overlooking the misty Midlands Meander, Fine & Country Midlands matches each property with the lifestyle aspirations of discerning buyers. The result is more than a successful transaction—it’s a seamless lifestyle alignment.

Community-First Connections

Being locals themselves, the Nortons believe deeply in the Midlands community. This core value shapes every interaction— Fine & Country doesn’t just sell property; they connect people who will love living in these spaces. Whether it’s guiding first-time landlords or matching multigenerational families to their next chapter, the agency’s focus is people-driven from start to finish.

The Art of Discreet Marketing

For some homeowners, privacy is paramount. Through discreet marketing, Fine & Country offers an exclusive, confidential route to market, ideal for clients who value privacy or wish to sell without public listings. This bespoke service involves handpicked matchmaking between property and buyer, supported by one-on-one consultations and off-market introductions.

Property Trends to Watch in the Midlands

The Midlands is experiencing a boom in lifestyle-driven purchases. Buyers from across South Africa are seeking tranquillity without sacrificing luxury, which is driving demand for smallholdings, eco-conscious estates, and modern country homes. Rental markets are also heating up, particularly for well-managed properties that offer long-term value—a trend Fine & Country Midlands is uniquely positioned to cater to, given Liesel and Andrew’s personal landlord experience.

Let’s Connect

Fireside Chats

The scene is set - a crackling fire with a hot toddy in hand, a chilly, but clear countryside night, and a few friends keeping the cold at bay with warm conversations and insights. Come and join us as we sit with four local men and hear about their treasured memories, dreams, and lessons.

John Roff John Roff

Greatest role model: I grew up a bit later than usual (and parts of me still are, I suppose). As a young adult, Tim Wright was my first mentor, and he taught me to trust my calling. With firm, kind care, he allowed me to be myself, yet encouraged me to become a better version of myself. He saw me, saw my vocation, and called it out. Perhaps he taught me how to be me.

What’s your favourite activity/hobby that makes you feel relaxed? I really enjoy sharpening knives. The focus of being able to do one task well, to restore something to its original function, the pleasure of being able to bless someone with a more functional tool, and the technical problem-solving needed to put the best edge on a particular blade.

What does masculinity mean to you? It’s nuanced and complicated, and I’m still figuring it out, but here are some keys I’ve found to be consistently true: Let God in. Be kind. Use your strength to serve others. Live for a transcendent cause. Pray. Accept help. Look for ways to give. Be ready to admit when you are wrong. Forgive. Keep going.

What makes you feel grounded? Two places—with my wife and four children in conversation around the dinner table, and out in a wilderness area somewhere where I can pray aloud and have uninterrupted conversations with God. Unusual rock formations are ideally part of this.

Nicholas Crooks Nicholas Crooks

What makes you feel grounded? I grew up in Durban, in the sea most of the time, and started surfing from an early age. If there’s anywhere that settles me and makes me centred, it’s going for a surf. I surf about once a week for about three hours. It’s truly the most wondrous thing for me, I come out as if someone has washed my soul and cleansed my body. It’s beautiful.

If you could change anything in your life, what would you change? I think everyone has regrets about stuff, and then you always want to go back and fix them. But when you think about it, if you don’t have regrets, then you wouldn’t have learned the lesson. So it’s a bit of a tricky thing. Sometimes you have to make mistakes because of your specific personality. And hopefully, learn and alter your personality around those decisions you’ve made. So I don’t know, I think regrets and mistakes should be turned into not just lessons, but ways of correcting your behaviour.

What dreams did you have growing up? Every kid wants to drive a bulldozer. I wanted the yellow bulldozer when I was three. I guess your interests are diverse. I wanted to get married when I was interested in getting married. I wanted to raise a lovely family when I had a family. So it’s all ongoing. Now, I’m in my legacy stage at 64-years-old. I think when you want to do something, you have to decide to do it. And then you have to commit to doing that. When you commit to an idea, it’s as if the universe begins to align in your favour. So I think commitment is quite important. Knowing what you want becomes much clearer as you get older. Your world becomes more focused—you’ve already experienced many of the things that come with youth. With that experience, you’re often better prepared to run a successful business.

Matt Hogarty Matt Hogarty

Boyhood memories: Sport was always a key part of my early years; I swam for the Northern Botswana team. I remember a key moment when a particular race that I had spent extensive time training for turned into a moment of dismal failure. A false start dented my confidence, slow turns and poor pacing the result of losing the mindbattle even before it started, all topped off by the normal ‘boyish’ teasing that came from fellow teammates as I nursed a bruised ego. My coach at the time took no time to look me firmly in the eye and uttered a statement that has helped me define my response to failure during various stages of my life, building resilience and perseverance. ‘Winners are not those that never fail. Winners use failure to their advantage by growing bigger than their failure. So get back in that pool and grow bigger than your last failure’. A simple reminder that failure is not the end, it’s the catalyst for courageous growth.

What makes you feel grounded? Family is where I find my safe and happy space. I love the seemingly monotonous moment of daily gathering around the dining room table with my family to just ‘be’. It’s in this space where hearts are fed, stories are shared, healthy banter erupts and we quietly remind ourselves of what matters most.

What are some of the greatest challenges you’ve experienced, and how did you overcome them? I spent just short of a year with a condition that took my voice away and rendered me incapable of normal communication. An incurable diagnosis and the thought of being a ‘silent’ contributor in life led me on a spiralling path of anxiety and depression. Recovering from this was nothing short of a miracle as my personal faith in Jesus led me on a journey of redefining my self-worth, discovering an identity that wasn’t built on my external performance, and wrestling through the pain of isolation.

Greatest role model: I grew up in a single-parent household, characterised by extreme financial pressure and the stress of trying to just ‘survive’. With three other siblings, we were a handful, but somehow my mother modelled how to find joy in the difficulty, laughing her way through some formidable challenges. She modelled hard work, tenacity and resilience, at times working three jobs to ensure that our dreams could be realised. I’m still learning how to find joy in challenges, but her life has taught me that love looks like sacrifice, taking bold steps to build the future you dream of, and never giving up on those that matter.

Andre Kauerauf Andre Kauerauf

Boyhood memories: A rather sad memory, but when I was around 16, a close friend took his own life. Although my family had already moved to KZN by that time, I remember having difficulty reconciling this tragedy. It made me realise that despair and loneliness can manifest in powerful ways. I made a conscious decision not to underestimate the need for strong friendships and to ask for help in challenging times.

Greatest role model: Joel Salatin. He is probably my biggest role model to this day. His books taught me that human beings are not an overpopulated scourge on the earth but rather that we as a species can choose to take up the responsibility of stewarding the land in a way that aligns with God’s will. This is based on a deep abundance mentality which enables us to be co-creators while we are on this earth.

If you could change anything in your life, what would you change? I would probably have chosen to study business and economics rather than Sound Engineering. My advice to young men (regardless of vocation) would be to learn the difference between hard and easy money as quickly as possible.

What’s your favourite activity/hobby that makes you feel relaxed? Building and tinkering in my workshop. My father and grandfather are both tool makers by trade, and therefore, building and innovating are in my blood.

What makes you feel grounded? The farm. If we believe that our responsibility is to be fully connected to the creator, then it opens up endless possibilities in terms of how we interact with our environment. We can look many generations into the future and be at peace with the short role that we play in a farm’s evolution.

1. Add sugar and lemon zest to a bowl—press the zest and sugar between your fingers. Keep rubbing until the lemon is fragrant.

2. Combine the soft butter and lemon sugar in a mixer or with a hand mixer and mix until the butter is light and creamy (3-5 mins).

3. Once the butter is creamy, mix in the eggs and cream until wellcombined.

4. Lastly, fold in the cake flour, poppy seeds and baking powder. Be careful not to overmix.

5. Line a baking tin with baking paper and spoon the batter into it—level the batter with the spoon.

6. Bake at 175˚C for 30-35 mins until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.

7. Once you’ve taken the cake out of the oven, mix 75g of castor sugar and 75g of lemon juice into a pot and heat on medium heat until the sugar has dissolved. Pour the soak over the cake and let the cake cool in the baking tin.

8. Slice and enjoy.

FOCACCIA Bread

POOLISH/PREFERMENT

• 85g lukewarm water

• 85g white bread flour

• 5g instant yeast

Mix water, flour, and yeast together. Rest at room temperature for one hour and then place in the fridge overnight (8-12 hours).

INGREDIENTS

• 220g cold water

• 320g white bread Flour

• 11g olive oil

• 11g salt

• 175g poolish

METHOD

1. Add cold water, olive oil, and salt in a bowl and mix until salt has dissolved.

2. Add the preferment (poolish) to the water and mix to combine.

3. Now add the flour and mix for 5-10 mins. The dough is meant to be sticky, so don’t add any extra flour.

4. Let it rest in the bowl for 30 mins.

5. After 30 mins, do a stretch and fold, then rest for another 30 mins.

Stretch and fold technique— wet hands lightly, grab a portion of the dough and stretch it upwards and over itself to the centre of the bowl.

Rotate the bowl 90˚ and repeat the stretch until you have completed a full circle.

6. Repeat the stretch and fold two more times—spaced 30 mins apart.

7. After the third stretch and fold, let the dough rise for another 30 mins.

8. After 30 mins, oil a baking tray and put the dough into the baking tray, gently stretching the dough to fit the tray.

9. Let the dough rise for another 1 hour. The dough must look pillowy and have doubled in size.

10. Sprinkle olive oil over the dough and dimple the dough by covering your hands with olive oil and pressing your fingers into the dough.

11. Add any desired toppings.

Seasonal

WELLNESS

While winter brings its splendours, it can also leave us susceptible to illness. Caring for ourselves during the colder and drier months is essential, so we consulted a few local health and fitness professionals for their recommendations on staying healthy from the inside out.

Keeping the Blood Flowing

Blood is life, and keeping it flowing is crucial, especially during winter. What better way than through exercise! While you don’t have to run a marathon or become a heavyweight lifter (if you are, keep going!), there are many other ways to incorporate movement into your day if you want something less stressful. Sandra Hedges, a registered Therapeutic Reflexologist, Integrative Wellness Therapist and Hatha Yoga instructor, suggests starting slow

with gentle movements. She adds, “I recommend yoga poses that encourage flow on all levels. Heartopening Asanas (poses) are a lovely way to start, followed by some forward folds to get blood to the brain. Thereafter, move your way down the body, finally grounding through the feet before relaxing into a rest pose, wrapped up snugly in a cosy blanket.”

You can follow these with exercises like jogging, rebounding, swimming, or playing games like Padel.

Another suggestion is massage, which is effective in moving blood and lymph and easing cold, tight muscles. Keep your muscles relaxed and your core and lower back warm with a hot water bottle to help maintain core body temperature.

If you want to try another form of movement, why not dance your way through winter? The Dance Warehouse at Athlone Circle Mall in Pietermaritzburg is a dance and boutique-style fitness centre for women and children from the age of two, offering a variety of classes that suit all fitness levels, including Dance Fitness, Ballet Bodysculpt, Body Conditioning, Bungee Fitness, Pole & Aerial Fitness, Burlesque, Booty Blast (HIIT), Dance Fusion, and Strength & Flexibility. Group classes will keep the morale strong with ample encouragement from the instructor. Trial classes are available, and you can move at your heart’s desire in a safe and fun environment.

Maintaining a Strong Immune System

Dovehouse Organics in Howick is a leading stockist of fresh, organic produce, and natural products. It’s owned and run by the Duncan family, who have their fingers on the pulse of all things holistic living. Maintaining a healthy immune system starts at the beginning of your day, and they recommend starting your day with a glass of freshly squeezed lemon juice topped up with warm water (not from the hot tap as heating elements inside geysers release heavy metals), and a pinch of high-quality salt. Recommended salts include Kalahari Desert salt, Himalayan salt, and Celtic Sea salt. This will aid in alkalising the body, providing cellular hydration and essential minerals like magnesium to support your immune, muscle, and nerve health.

Recommended healthy breakfast options that are alkaline and allow the body to naturally heal include a green smoothie consisting of fruit, leafy greens, raw seeds, avocado, and a drizzle of raw, cold-pressed olive oil. Or, for a warm breakfast, enjoy eggs with lightly steamed spinach, avocado, and a floret or two of broccoli.

Here are a few suggested seasonal foods to incorporate into your diet: citrus fruits, gooseberries, tree tomatoes, avocado, kale, spinach, parsley, rocket, coriander, broccoli, sweet potatoes, beetroot, garlic, and turmeric.

They also recommend adding a daily salad to your diet, it provides raw enzymes, fibre, hydration, and a diverse spectrum of alkalising nutrients. Think lettuce, microgreens, cucumber, a grated carrot, beetroot, a drizzle of raw, cold-pressed olive oil, and avocado.

If you’re dealing with excess mucus or nasal drip, consider limiting

processed foods, gluten, dairy, nuts, oats, and bananas. The Duncans conclude, “Ultimately, winter wellness comes down to nourishing your body with whole, fresh foods, getting regular sun exposure and avoiding processed ingredients.”

Renée Mitchell, a nutritionist and owner of Renée’s Health Shop in Howick, stocks a variety of herbal supplements. She advises that a holistic and natural approach to our health best supports our immune systems. It starts with simple lifestyle practises: getting sunlight upon waking, exercising, avoiding sugar and processed foods, supporting

our gut, and eating immuneboosting foods. Here are a few of her favourite suggested herbs and nutrients:

• Astragalus: Known for boosting white blood cell production and overall immune resilience.

• Echinacea: Stimulates immune activity, especially at the onset of viral infections.

• Pelargonium: This herb is a powerful immune stimulant and a natural antibiotic for the respiratory tract.

• Olive Leaf Extract: A potent antimicrobial agent that supports the body during cold and flu season. Available in formulations for both adults and children.

• Vitamin C: An antiviral vitamin. Be sure to choose an optimal form rather than plain ascorbic acid, which may irritate digestion or lead to excess acidity in the joints.

Renée also suggests keeping it dynamic, “I recommend rotating your immune support remedies every few weeks. This prevents over-reliance on a single herb or supplement and keeps your immune system responsive and adaptable.”

A Remedy a Day

Homoeopathy might be your best bet if you are looking for other alternatives to support your body and skin during winter. Dr Megan Medina, a registered homoeopathic doctor (M.Tech: Hom) in Hilton, specialises in remedies that offer gentle, individualised healing for all ages. The remedies address root causes. They are also safe and nontoxic compared to some over-thecounter medicines. A few of Megan’s favourites include:

• Aconite (30C): This is perfect for sudden colds or flu triggered by cold, dry winds. It’s best used at the first sign of chills, fever, or sore throat, helping to halt symptom progression.

• Oscillococcinum: A go-to for early flu symptoms like fatigue and body aches. Taken early, it can reduce the severity and duration of illness.

• Bryonia (30C): Suited for dry, painful coughs or flu with aches that worsen with movement. It supports those feeling irritable and seeking rest.

• Kali bichromicum (30C): Excellent for thick, stringy nasal discharge or sinus infections common in winter. It addresses sinus headaches, pressure in the face, and sticky mucus, helping clear congestion naturally.

• Rhus tox (30C): This is ideal for joint stiffness aggravated by cold, damp weather, improving with movement.

Disclaimer: consult a healthcare professional before using homoeopathic remedies, especially for serious conditions or if on other medication.

Cold weather can leave skin dry, flaky, and irritated, but help is at hand. Natassja Bester, founder of

Elemental Tallow in the Midlands, has created a skincare range that deeply nourishes and protects your skin during winter’s harsh conditions. With over a decade of experience in aesthetic skin therapy, she blends nature’s finest ingredients into powerful, skin-loving formulas.

At the heart of her range is grassfed sheep tallow, a nutrient-rich fat packed with vitamins A, D, E, and K, and skin-friendly fatty acids. These nutrients mimic the body’s natural oils, making tallow ideal for restoring moisture and supporting skin repair. One of her bestsellers? The Sheep Tallow “Botox in a Jar” Whipped Balm. This luxurious blend combines sheep

tallow with castor oil, jojoba oil, and frankincense essential oil to deeply hydrate and calm dry or mature skin. It’s especially soothing for cracked hands, heels, and wind-chapped cheeks, a true winter essential.

If you’re looking to switch to a more natural, effective skincare routine this season, Elemental Tallow offers a gentle, nourishing solution you can trust, handmade with care, and free from nasties.

We hope these tips help you during the colder seasonal changes and that you are in shipshape for spring and summer, which are just around the corner!

JOURNEY

WORDS + OPENING PHOTO NIKKI BRIGHTON

The Midlands community is proud of its talented members who all contribute their expertise, and one such individual is Sabelo Xaba, who has gone from strength to strength in building his practice as a Physical Therapist and finding his way as a Zulu man.

Sabelo has always been a gentle soul, the peacemaker amongst his peers. “My father had a calm demeanour, there was no shouting in our family. Issues were dealt with quietly,” he recalls. Growing up, Sabelo remembers his dad regularly sitting his children down and asking them what their dreams were. “I thought I would like to become a lawyer, but my dad discouraged me from that.” During high school, Sabelo was a keen rugby player and needed treatments for his own back pain. This early exposure and firsthand experience with physical therapies,

including craniosacral therapy, massage, and chiropractic care, sparked his interest in the field. Knowing the impact back pain has on one’s quality of life, he was clear about the career he would follow, buoyed by the support of his family.

Young Zulu boys usually know how to skin an animal. Sabelo Xaba remembers when he was about 12-years-old, participating in the slaughtering of a goat at a ritual to welcome ancestors. “It is an important rite of passage when you stop being an observer (like when I was nine at my father’s funeral) and are given a specific

task to perform,” he remembers. However, when faced with dissecting a human cadaver while studying Chiropractic at DUT, Sabelo had a moment of panic but noticed that everyone else looked comfortable and relaxed. “One girl was so chilled, eating her sandwich,” he laughed. “Once I got started though, I found that it was a similar system to the animals, and I was fascinated.”

Sabelo loves to work with his hands (rather than writing or drawing), so the dissection class soon became his favourite.

After five years of study, while enrolled in the Master's Programme in Chiropractic, Sabelo felt he needed to take a break and focus on his music. Unfortunately, he was not able to return and complete his degree. During the last eight years, Sabelo had run exercise classes for My Home Gym in Pinetown, spent two and a half years with Discovery Health as a pre-authorisations consultant and kept on studying. He enrolled with the Healing Hands Institute to learn other modalities, utilise his knowledge and be able to enter private practice as a physical therapist.

“While music is a vital part of my life and I won’t stop making music, my focus has now shifted firmly back to healing. I am enjoying the journey, learning new things all the time,” he shared. A couple of years ago, Sabelo saw an opportunity with the National Youth Development Agency to apply for funding for his fledgling massage therapy business.

The administrators were impressed by his vision and business plan and the fact that he was practising voluntarily in his community already. He was awarded a small sponsorship to put towards

equipment—a portable massage table, electrotherapy, and a massage machine. “I think I stood out from everyone applying to start tuck shops or hair salons, so I believed success was within my reach.” This boost has enabled Sabelo to work with confidence. He is part of the collective of practitioners based at The House @ 9 in Howick.

Over the last couple of years, he has also treated patients at the Mpophomeni Pharmacy on Mandela Drive and Dr Dube’s practice in Mpendle, introducing rural folk to the benefits of physical and massage therapy. “People from rural areas have often engaged in hard physical labour for most of their lives, and their bodies have taken real strain without access to treatment. It makes me very happy to see a patient who has suffered from knee and back pain for a long time stand up straight and walk easily again,” Sabelo says with a wide smile.

Sabelo firmly believes that a therapist’s role is to initiate the healing process, which constitutes 20% of the work. The remaining 80% depends on the patient’s adherence to corrective actions in their daily lives to prevent further injury and facilitate healing. Annie Waterhouse

comments, “My journey from a total hip replacement to a long haul flight in just seven weeks could not have been done without the healing hands and personalised exercise regime of Sabelo.”

In 2024, Sabelo acknowledged some of the healing work he needed to do for himself: “I feel more grounded, more creative, more focused, have a clearer vision, and truly feel like a healer.” He relishes being part of isibaya samadoda—a space for men to discuss their life experiences, culture, and ancestral practise. “We talk about how our forefathers observed patterns, thought deeply and how most social rules were based on natural rhythms and cycles. There is a lot of value in these conversations, helping us to understand why, as Black men, we don’t relate to many modern things.”

Nowadays, the only dissecting Sabelo does is of his own journey. “I am enjoying this process of introspection—examining myself, my community, and our society. Helping others and finding meaningful ways to contribute to healing the world around me.”

A BUMPER HILL’S

T1000 PAWS WALK 2025

his year marked the 16th Hill’s 1000 Paws Walk for SPCAs, held at Highgate Wine Estate (next to Piggly Wiggly near Howick) on Sunday 1 June, with almost 350 pooches and 516 adults (and LOTS of undocumented excited kiddies), making this a fundraising event to remember. But it’s far more than an event; it is a lifeline for the three Midlands’ SPCAs (the uMngeni, Mooi River & District, and Pietermaritzburg societies) to be able to continue protecting local animals, leaving no paw or claw unattended.

Major sponsors include Hill’s Pet Nutrition and N3TC, as well as Safire Insurance Company and donors of must-have prizes that make the 1000 Paws raffle such a success. This year, luxury getaways were the top four prizes. The winners, who were drawn randomly at the 1000 Paws Walk event, were: 1st prize: Laura Fleischack, who won a twonight stay for two at The Cavern Drakensberg Resort & Spa worth R11,680.00

2nd prize: Cara Kennard, who won a two-night stay for two at Cathedral Peak Hotel worth R8,780.00

which includes a schools’ collection tin competition as well as the Walks event and the raffle,” says Gaynor Lawson, 1000 Paws Walk PRO. “Donations and corporate sponsorships for this year would still be most welcome, and those over R500 qualify for an 18A tax certificate.”

From its humble beginnings on 11 October 2009 at Orient Park, Midmar (and thousands of participating paws later), the 1000 Paws programme today helps the three Midlands’ SPCAs with their mission to assist all types of animals in need: pets, wildlife, birds, livestock, poultry, reptiles, and fish across the area. Much of their work is centred on outreach and educational efforts in poorer communities where animal owners cannot always afford proper medical and other care for their animals.

3rd prize: Linda Shrives, who won a two-night stay for two at Champagne Sports Resort worth R8,500.00

4th prize: Kim Davis-McNally, who won a stay at Beverley Country Cottages in the Dargle worth R4,400.00

Another lucky winner was Rikka Nel, who won a seaside getaway in Clansthal on the KZN South Coast when a sniffer dog from the K9 Academy selected her plate in the Paper Plate Challenge.

“The steering committee of this year’s Hill’s 1000 Paws Walk for SPCAs sincerely appreciates everyone who came along to the event and all who support this amazing, multi-faceted fundraising programme,

“Every SPCA is started by community members who must ensure that there is sufficient funding to keep the society running, or it will have to close,” says Gaynor. “Several SPCAs have closed due to financial constraints in the past few years.” The three Midlands’ SPCAs, like every SPCA in the country, do not receive financial support from the central government, nor are they funded by the NSPCA (National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). They rely on constant fundraising efforts, plus sponsorships and donations to stay operational. Let’s keep our SPCAs open!

P O L O G E T I C A L L YY

In a world that often asks women to shrink, soften, or second-guess themselves, these voices rise in quiet defiance. This is a celebration of women owning their journeys. Each answer reveals a deeply personal moment of strength, resilience, or clarity. Together, these seven women form a powerful portrait of what it means to live with courage, trust your gut, and stand tall in your truth, unapologetically.

What lesson did life teach you the hard way – and how did it shape you into who you are today?

“I love unconditionally—whether you're furred, feathered, wounded, or wild. I’ve fought for every fragile breath, believing love could rescue anything. But life, with its quiet ache, taught me the sacredness of pain and grief. I’ve held death gently and learned that letting go can be an act of mercy. Pain lit a fire in me—not to harden, but to awaken. I no longer fear heartbreak, I honour it. I am unapologetically her—still tender, still fierce, and no longer chained to only life, but brave enough to walk with death, too.”

What part of your life journey are you most proud of – even if nobody else saw it?

“I’m most proud of earning my child nursing science qualification cum laude while hard of hearing—using those skills to save lives and lead a paediatric ward. I was once a sick seven-year-old saved by nurses; becoming one felt like destiny fulfilled. A former student’s shared notebook helped me through lectures, and later I paid it forward by teaching others. I’m also proud of writing my memoir, The Crowing Rooster, which connected me to an inspiring deaf community. Today, I embrace my hearing journey with confidence and am being assessed for cochlear implant surgery—another chapter in a life shaped by resilience.”

What does it mean to be unapologetically yourself?

“To be unapologetically yourself means trusting your instincts—especially in an industry full of external influences. For me, that begins with small daily rituals, like grooming, that build self-confidence and self-trust. Over the years, I’ve learnt to listen to my gut, which has guided me through challenges and brought me to a place where I now create beautiful clothing with an incredible team. Our customers wear our designs with confidence, and that’s something I’m deeply proud of. Being unapologetically myself has meant leading with courage, working hard, and staying true to a vision we’ve brought to life together.”

- Debbie Blake

What’s one moment you realised your own strength?

“I realised my strength the day I stepped into a cold, empty exhibition hall with nothing but a sketchpad, a vision, and two young sons depending on me. I had no capital, no partner—just an unshakeable belief that South Africa’s design talent deserved a global stage. That moment became the birth of Decorex. It wasn’t just about building a business—it was about building a future. My purpose was clear: to raise my boys with dignity and create a platform for others like me—mothers, dreamers, and doers. Strength, I learned, is quiet, determined, and rooted in something greater than yourself.”

If you could pass on just one life lesson to your younger self, what would it be?

“Start practising self-compassion sooner. We are so hard on ourselves, we expect so much from ourselves, and when we do drop the ball, we can be so mean to ourselves. We would never talk to or treat a friend the way we do ourselves. It’s time to embrace ourselves as our own best friend, and acknowledge that we all have good days and bad days, and that’s okay. We are all imperfectly human, as it is meant to be, and we should treat ourselves with love and compassion. The world lightens a little when we do.”

- Jacqui Meyer

What is one piece of advice you now live by that your younger self would’ve rolled her eyes at?

“Live in the present moment. And yeah, it sounds cliché and easy. My younger me would’ve questioned what was extraordinary about what I’m saying, but experience has shown me that worrying about what was and stressing about what’s to come only limits one’s ability to truly experience the moment. You can’t predict life’s playbook or pre-empt its lessons—so enjoy the ride, wins and setbacks alike. It’s through those moments that your character is built and your strength is revealed. Life’s unpredictability is exactly what makes it such a joyful ride.”

- Wendy Nwankwo

What would a letter to your 20-year-old self say?

“Dear Dreamer, What stories I could tell you! The places you’ll go. The wars you will fight. The people you’ll know. But what if you’d known how life would twist off your path? That “Job One” would wreck you. That food wouldn’t last. That babies would scream. That friends would pass away. That depression would suffocate. Would you have stepped away? But, what if I told you, you’d see the world? That babies stop crying and turn into sweet little girls? That young lovers would marry. That old friends would stay. That depression would fade, and your dreams remain.”

- Kate Botha

OUT OF TOWN

WORDS KAI COATES

This season, swap misty mornings for salty air and make time to explore the charm, flavour and fun of Ballito and Umhlanga.

Understanding the Power of Ozone Therapy

Whether you are an athlete or suffer from poor health, taking care of yourself can be stressful, and confusing. Insufficient cellular oxygen and inflammation are major causes of poor health, and oxygen delivery is fundamental to producing energy, healing and keeping fit. Many people are opting for more natural and holistic treatments for low immunity, regular colds and flu, autoimmune diseases, and so on. Ozone therapy is one of the methods that has been shown to increase and improve the body’s oxygen utilisation, creating a healthier environment that boosts the immune system and supports normal cell function.

When ozone is introduced into the body, a remarkable thing happens. It stimulates the mitochondria in your cells ten times more efficiently than ordinary oxygen. You can consume oxygen, but if your body is not using it efficiently, it is wasted. Efficient oxygen utilisation is imperative for improving and maintaining a healthy state. Ozone therapy is the most advanced oxygen-based treatment available. It provides powerful healing effects that regular oxygen therapy can’t match. By combining ozone and oxygen benefits, you can recover faster, boost your immune system, and enjoy better overall health.

• Ozone stimulates the production of white blood cells. These cells protect the body from viruses, bacteria, fungi and cancer.

• Ozone is a potent regulator of the immune system. This means that when the immune system is overactive, as in autoimmune disease, ozone will calm it down. Conversely, when the immune system is underactive, as in cancer, ozone will stimulate it.

• Ozone has an alkalising effect on the body. Disease thrives in an acidic environment.

• Ozone can reduce inflammation and pain.

• Oxygen delivery is increased, blood and lymph are detoxified, and circulation is increased throughout the body.

While ozone works to reduce inflammation, detox, and modulate your immune system, Thermography, or Clinical Thermal Imaging, is used to find inflammation. It is a test of risk factors and detects physiological changes in the body. Changes in a body’s physiology precede changes in the anatomy.

Thermography is 100% safe. There is no radiation, pain or compression involved. It is a highly sensitive method to assess all risk factors in your current breast and body health. You can visually monitor the results of your treatment and preventive plans in real time. It is a way to decide whether to stay the course or make adjustments.

While Ozone and Thermography are separate methods, both work hand-in-hand if you are looking for more holistic practises to monitor your health and well-being.

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”Benjamin Franklin.

Seasons and Rural Rhythms

There’s a quiet rhythm to life in the KZN Midlands, one that’s easy to miss if you’re rushing. However, look a little closer, and it’s there in the changing light, the first frost, and the varying colour palette. This rhythm, once central to rural life, is being rediscovered by a new generation and with it, a different kind of wellness. Call it slow living, seasonal awareness, or simply “coming home” across the Midlands, people have been tuning into the old ways such as growing food, living simply, and syncing their lives with the natural cycles of the land. In many other parts of the country, most seasons seem to blend into one another, with only small clues that a change has occurred, but here we truly experience it, visceral and in technicolour.

In the past, living by the seasons wasn’t a lifestyle choice, it was survival. Farmers planted when the soil warmed. Harvests came when the rains allowed. Winters meant rest and repair. Today, after decades of disconnection and globalisation, there’s a growing interest in that seasonal wisdom, not just amongst farmers, but amongst families, smallholders, and young professionals seeking a more grounded way of life.

You can see it at the local markets, where seasonal produce is back in vogue. You hear it in conversations about buying some layer chickens or starting a worm farm. You feel it in the slower pace of life many are embracing, intentionally stepping back from the always-on digital world.

Living seasonally means more than eating what grows locally. It’s about presence. You start noticing the world around you, how the light changes in June,

TIM

and how your energy dips with the shortening days. It’s not always comfortable. Nature doesn’t cater to convenience, but that discomfort can be clarified. It may even mean later morning tee-off times, or an extra layer for that evening jog. In a world obsessed with instant gratification, seasonal living forces patience and resilience, and perhaps that’s the point, slowing down, leaning in, and letting go of the illusion of control.

For Midlands families, whether rooted here for generations or newly arrived, this return to seasonal living is about more than nostalgia. It’s about resilience, well-being, and a deeper connection to place. It’s also about community. Local schools are reintroducing children to planting and harvesting. Events are timed to the rhythms of the land, harvest festivals, winter markets, and spring walks. The calendar isn’t just a list of dates, it’s a reflection of what the land is doing.

There’s a quiet power in all this. When we live with the seasons, we live with more care, for ourselves, our communities, and the environment. The Midlands is uniquely placed to model this kind of life. Here, it’s still possible to know your farmer, to wake with the sun, to watch the clouds gather and know what they mean. It’s not a curated lifestyle, it’s a lived one.

And maybe, in this small return to rural rhythms, we’re remembering something we never truly lost, just forgot to notice.

When we live with the seasons, we live with more care, for ourselves, our communities, and the environment.
