e're here, it's that time of year, we've made it!
Every year has its own rhythm of work, family, deadlines, early mornings, late nights, and managing the juggle. Yet somehow, when we reach this point, there is a real sense of gratitude we start to feel above everything else. The pace slows, the noise softens, and we get a chance to lift our heads and appreciate what the year has given us.
When I look back on the year, I see that it has been a mix of both challenges and really good moments, as most years are. I think about friends, colleagues, and people I care about, and it feels like each of them has had something to overcome, something to push through. But I also know that every single one of them has had moments that made them smile, laugh, gave them hope, and had moments that reminded them of what is so good and steady in life. That is what a year teaches us, right? It gives us seasons to grow through, but it also shows us how strong we can be when we stand together.
And standing together is something this community does incredibly well. The North Coast has a way of connecting people that is hard to explain but easy to feel. I hear stories all the time that remind me of this. I hear stories of young men from Ballito finding each other in China to play in a rugby tournament together. Someone sitting in a restaurant in Scotland, going through a tough moment, only to be served by a waiter who has mutual friends from Ballito. Somehow, our people always find each other, and when they do, something positive comes
from it. It serves as a reminder that no matter where we go, there is a thread that ties us back to this coastline.
As we shift into a time of rest, I hope you get to spend it around people who lift you up. Family, friends, neighbours, or simply familiar faces that bring joy around this time of year. Smile a little more, even in the holiday traffic! Wave when you see someone you recognise. Enjoy the small things that make the season so meaningful.
And when you finally get to put your feet up, I hope this edition of The Ballito magazine adds to your moments of calm. Our team has worked hard to put together stories that reflect the heart of our community. You will find ideas for gifts, places to explore, food to enjoy, and people whose stories inspire and connect us.
Before I close, thank you. Truly. To our team, to every reader, advertiser, and supporter who plays a role in keeping this magazine thriving, we are so grateful to you. It is a privilege to still be telling your stories and to be part of this remarkable place.
I look forward to connecting again in the new year. Until then, enjoy this edition of The Ballito magazine.

The importance of planning carefully and considering o shore opportunities and idiosyncratic shares is essential. Adding an o shore equity/currency component to a South African portfolio reduces the risk and volatility of the overall portfolio. If any one currency or country enters a bear market, an investor will be protected by a diversi ed portfolio. e best countries to invest in have fewer government regulations and interference, less government ownership, fewer trade unions, lower taxes, and no foreign exchange controls.
At Fenestra, we tailor client portfolios according to their individual needs. e service is close and personal; clients will never have to talk to a computer. We consistently steer our clients away from risky investments and towards great companies. In the process, we have protected our clients from the worst calamities.
Our Mission
Fenestra strives to be a great South African and International specialist investment group. We are driven by a passion for outstanding performance with an unwavering commitment to our philosophies and core values.
Focus
Fenestra limits its attention to about 50 outstanding companies but will invest in no more than 10 of them. is restricts the portfolio to only ve or six outstanding performers. We invest in companies with strong track records, honest management, solid balance sheets, and promising future prospects.

Criteria
e criteria for investments are simple. Honesty of management is a top priority. Other key investment criteria include an established pro t history, a growing market with growing margins, strong cash generation ability, and some blue-sky potential. It is also preferable if the managers are signi cant shareholders.
Performance
Since its inception in 1990, Fenestra Asset Management has regularly outperformed the market (as measured by the ALSI).
The Bottom Line
Fenestra doesn’t invest clients’ money in generic portfolios. Rather, investment portfolios are custom-made. We listen to our clients, nd out what their investment objectives are, and design portfolios accordingly.
Our dedicated team has one goal: to make money with our clients.

Words Pierre Taljaard
The stock market might be one of the most misunderstood concepts in the world. Given its central role in helping investors achieve financial independence, it's crucial to understand what it is, what it isn't, and how it functions.
As you navigate Ballito Junction Mall or Lifestyle Centre this December, Christmas list in hand, you're doing more than just holiday shopping. That gift hamper, that branded watch for your teenager, the banking app on your phone; you're interacting with dozens of publicly listed companies. The stock market isn't some distant abstraction. It's all around you, especially during this festive season.
Many investors consider the stock market an abstract concept they cannot see or interact with. With this mindset, it's easy to start thinking about stock ownership as a piece of paper. You hope that one day it will be worth more than it is today, but it's not clear why that will happen.
Another group of investors will have a cynical view of the market as nothing more than a casino in which the game is rigged in favour of "insiders". They view wealth as something that can only come at the expense of others.
The first step towards correctly understanding the stock market is to become aware of the companies you interact with daily. From the moment you wake up, you consume goods and services produced by businesses. Many of these companies have their shares listed on

public exchanges, making them available for purchase by any investor.
This Christmas season makes this especially visible. You're buying from your local grocery stores. You're streaming movies while using the internet to find recipes. The device you're considering as a gift? Branded. The health insurance covering your family? Listed.
The stock market is nothing more than a collection of real companies selling real things to real people.
Success in the investment markets comes down to good investor behaviour, and good behaviour only comes from correctly understanding the fundamentals. Your best starting point is to remember that you are the stock market. It's all around you. You contribute to it, and you benefit from it.
As we head into the new year, perhaps the best gift you can give your future self is this understanding: every purchase you make connects you to the world of investing. You own the great companies of the world. What a marvel!
You are the stock market; you contribute to it, and you benefit from it

There’s something magical about the holidays on KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast. The air feels lighter, the ocean warmer, and the horizon endless. It’s a time when family and friends gather, when days stretch long and unhurried, and when the spirit of connection fills every sunlit corner.
For residents of Coral Cove, Auria Senior Living’s new coastal community within Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate,
this magic is soon to become part of everyday life. Set along one of South Africa’s most beautiful stretches of coastline, Coral Cove captures everything that makes the North Coast so special: its golden light, laid-back energy, and year-round warmth. It’s the kind of place where the festive season feels as if it never truly ends.
Amongst the first to call Coral Cove home is Penny Rey Coelen, South

Africa’s first Miss World and a longtime Ballito local, whose grace and love for coastal living reflect the spirit of the community. For Penny, Coral Cove is an extension of the life she loves by the sea, surrounded by natural beauty, friendship, and a lifestyle thoughtfully designed for comfort and connection.
As Coral Cove begins preparing to welcome its first residents, the community will soon hum with its own rhythm. Laughter will drift across verandahs, ocean breezes will sweep through open doors, and those first shared moments will mark the beginning of a vibrant community taking shape. The warm summer weather perfectly complements the design of Coral Cove. Wide balconies, open-plan living areas, and coastal-

inspired finishes invite the outdoors in, creating a seamless flow between home and horizon. The residences have been crafted with care and sophistication, offering a choice of beautifully appointed two- and threebedroom maisonettes and garden villas, each designed to capture the essence of living by the coast: light-filled, spacious, and surrounded by nature. Elegant interiors, modern kitchens, and generous outdoor spaces make every home ideal for entertaining family and friends, especially over the holidays.
Beyond the homes, Coral Cove’s amenities are where the Auria lifestyle truly comes alive. Residents will enjoy a wellness centre and gym, cinema, indoor and outdoor swimming pools with panoramic sea views, Café Auria,

a bar and lounge to relax and socialise, a beauty salon, and dedicated activity spaces for everything from art to fitness. Coral Cove also includes a state-of-the-art Care Centre, offering both frail and memory care. Thoughtfully designed for comfort, dignity, and peace of mind, it ensures residents have access to professional support if needed, so life can be lived fully, with confidence and ease.
And perhaps most special of all is how Coral Cove fits within the broader Zululami and Seaton estates, offering a truly multi-generational lifestyle. It’s a place where children, grandchildren, and grandparents can share the same coastal haven, spending time together, making memories, and creating traditions that span generations.
By this time next year, Coral Cove will be alive with the unmistakable energy of the North Coast, families reuniting, ocean breezes drifting through festive gatherings, and a community that is warm, vibrant, and full of life.
Coral Cove is extraordinary living for the best years of your life.

Spend an afternoon with us at Simbithi Country Club as we wrap up a memorable year
This time of the year often sparks a sense of thanksgiving as we wrap up and look back at everything we’ve accomplished. It’s also a time to express gratitude for those who have supported us throughout the year, and what brings people together better than good food around a table? To celebrate some of our longstanding and valued relationships, Simbithi Country Club hosted us for a day of delicious spoils and a bit of socialising.
They started us off at the Padel courts in the Sports Complex with welcome drinks as everyone arrived. With the pool glistening in the sunlight and clear skies stretching over Ballito, we enjoyed the cool breeze passing through as we sipped cocktails beneath swaying trees and cleverly placed umbrellas shielding us from the springtime sun. This was an opportunity to chat with the guests and introduce ourselves to everyone.

It was nice to meet them in person and put a face to a name, as some of us only ever communicated over email! It was smiles all round as we chatted and chose our main meals from a custommade menu for the occasion.
As we were ushered to the Fig Tree Restaurant below for starters, we were greeted by heartfelt hospitality and infectious smiles. It was easy to see why they have been voted “Best Venue and Conference Centre” on the North Coast, from the friendly and efficient service to the welcoming atmosphere that puts you at ease. Settling down

around a specially arranged table in the restaurant, conversations carried on effortlessly, almost as if we never moved locations. The comfortable setting allowed everyone to feel free to unwind, which was one of the main objectives of the day. To take a break from the manic and frantic schedules from each of our offices and connect with people with no deadlines hanging over us for a few hours, and the laidback environment of the Fig Tree allowed us to do just that.
As the starters arrived, everyone tucked in, grabbing a paneer skewer here and some onion rings there. At some point, the dishes also became conversation starters as we admired the diverse and delicious spread laid out by Executive Chefs Louis Lesch and Godfrey Kinyanjui. Soon, tales of adventure were swapped around the table, recalling trips overseas and funny anecdotes from misadventures as well. The lively chatter drew every person seated there in, with a talk of business and the rich history of Durban and
Ballito popping up from time to time. To complement the food and occasion, the Simbithi Country Club team brought out a generous selection of wines and champagne from their cellar.
Enjoying unmatched cuisine and attentiveness in gracious company within an elegant space makes all the difference to your and your guests’ event experience. Simbithi Country Club has a range of event and conference venues to suit your special occasion. Whether it’s the large Pavilion Room or multifaceted Dragonfly Conference Centre, each venue is uniquely appointed to serve individual tastes. The Pavilion Room’s glass facade allows for an exquisite, panoramic view of the awardwinning Simbithi Golf Course. Natural light streams into the room, allowing for daytime events while bespoke curtains screen the space off at night.

The Dragonfly Conference Centre comprises three unique spaces which may be used separately or combined: Conference Room One, The Dragonfly Restaurant, and The Dragonfly Lounge, each with unique designs and facilities for high-end in-person and virtual functions.
Our final location for the day was the Simbithi Wine Gallery. Tucked away on the ground floor of the Club, it was warm, exclusive, and inviting. Waiting for us was a festive-themed table complete with crackers and twinkling lights on miniature Christmas trees. To

give everyone a chance to speak to a different person, we changed seating arrangements, a fun way to keep things interesting. Looking around at the smiling faces and hearing the laughter, it was almost like something out of a Christmas movie, and as our main course arrived, it became the Christmas lunch scene.
Every meal was greeted by “oohs” and “aahs” of appreciation as we tucked in. From the classic filet mignon to Chef Godfrey’s iconic Kuku Bizari Ya Pwani, the silence spoke for itself.

In somewhat quieter tones, the reminiscing continued as words of gratitude were exchanged, not only for this year but also looking back on decade-long relationships. It was about recognising the supportive community our magazines have mustered and the trust given to us to be able to tell their stories. Sitting there, listening to tales of first impressions and the rich history with these people, it made for a special memory in itself.
Sufficiently fed and all “talked out”, the day wouldn’t be over without a sweet treat to see everyone off. Accompanied by coffee and light chatter, the dessert served as the perfect way to round off an amazing day spent with incredible and inspirational people, hosted by the exceptional team at Simbithi Country Club.
A heartfelt thank you to the team at Simbithi Country Club for hosting us and to Tazz from Coastal Media for capturing the experience with

If you’ve ever wondered why Ballito’s streets fill with a colourful stream of runners once a month on a Sunday, you’re not alone. It’s not a race or a marathon, but something grounded in local lifestyle. It’s called Rock Up & Run, a uniquely Ballito blend of fitness, community, and good vibes that has locals lacing up their shoes, catching up with friends, and giving back - all before breakfast. It takes place on the first Sunday of every month at
Hops Ballito. There is no entry fee, no pre-booking, as the name suggests, just rock up and run - anyone is welcome. Participants can choose between a 5.6 km or 7 km run, or a more relaxed 4 km walk, and are rewarded afterwards with a complimentary beer, wine, or coffeeyes, alcohol even before 8 a.m.!
Three times a year - in May, September, and again on 31 December for the much-loved Run
Out 25 - the free event becomes a fundraiser for which an entry fee is charged. This year’s curtain closer event takes place on a Wednesday morning and comes with an entry fee of R170. Runners receive a T-shirt and the usual post-race refreshment, while proceeds go towards the Salt40 Foundation.
Beyond keeping the community fit and connected, Rock Up & Run supports the Salt40 Foundation’s

work in uplifting disadvantaged people through skills development and welfare support. The non-profit’s initiatives include teaching bicycle repair, which gives people the tools to start small businesses or find work in the cycling industry, and donating bikes to learners as incentives to join their development programmes.
“I love attending the monthly Rock Up & Run as it’s an amazing time to be with our community and support the Salt40 Foundation. It is also a scheduled time to get outside and be present in your body for a moment. Oh, and of course, the coffee or beer catch-ups after the run with everyone is the best part,” says local runner, Kai Coates, who hardly ever misses a Rock Up & Run event.
So how does Rock Up & Run raise money for its chosen cause when
“Just showing up and joining in can make a tangible difference”
entry to most events is free? The answer lies in a simple but effective partnership. For every person who takes part, Balwin Properties donates R5 to the Salt40 Foundation. With an average turnout of around 150 participants each month, those small amounts quickly add up, proving that just showing up and joining in can make a tangible difference.
Anyone, including holiday makers, feeling inspired to join in the colourful movement, get some exercise while also giving back to society, is invited to follow their socials to see upcoming events and then either just rock up and run or, in case of one of the three annual fundraiser events, book your entry and then still rock up and run.

What you didn’t know about the journey of Mozambik and the evolution of their Afro-Porto style.
Some things just belong together. Prawns and lemon butter, bacon and eggs, and Mozambik and Ballito. Known for its iconic chicken dishes, lively atmosphere and legendary R&Rs, the restaurant has been a steady presence in the area
and has evolved along with it. As the brand celebrates 20 years, we went back to the early days of this now international franchise, with Brett Michielin, a 40-seater restaurant and a crazy vision for what Mozambik could one day become. Looking for a change in 2005, Brett took
a trip to the coast, not sure what he was looking for or what he would find. Sitting in the restaurant, which was previously in the Boulevard Shopping Centre, he looked at the menu after sampling a few dishes and saw an opportunity. Still serving his final few months,

he approached the owner and proposed a partnership, not giving up even when faced with constant declinations. Brett eventually wore him down with his charisma and persistence and joined the team. Soon, he was on the floor, managing staff and navigating a bustling Ballito through packed holiday seasons and an expanding restaurant. Looking back, the experience was invaluable and taught him things about the industry he hadn’t seen before. As the restaurant became more
popular, more space and additions were needed. Still finding their feet and funding, they were cautious about what they introduced and when. They introduced a wooden deck, the Mozam-bar, where they served drinks, and in the height of December’s summer, their first customer walked in asking for the menu, but it actually didn’t exist just yet. Using the same kitchen that used to service 40 people now had to cater to 250 people. With a few scuffles and hard work, they got through those days and came out more experienced on the other side.
There was also the move to Balvista Centre, which saw the restaurant introduce new experiences with this refreshed location; the outdoor seating by the water is a favourite on hot days! This move came about when Brett’s business partner decided it was time to move on from the business, believing it had grown to its full potential, and coming out of the pandemic when the centre they were in wanted to revamp. It was a big and necessary step for the brand to grow.
Franchising came with its own set of lessons and challenges, “I thought I understood the franchising model, it was definitely a learning curve for me,” Brett shares. As the business flourished, his acumen as a restaurateur also developed as he realised a more hands-on approach was needed for every new branch that was opened. A central kitchen was introduced to maintain quality control and consistency of the authentic flavours, standard of dishes, and service the brand was known for.
Maintaining a menu that caters to everyone, that follows nutritional
guidelines, and adapts to the region in which it is served requires a keen eye, discerning palate, as well as continuous testing and development. The Mozambik team is always monitoring their dishes to ensure they have what patrons want, adding on requested and constantly popular dishes, and removing those that can be swapped out for something more suitable for that season or area. Being in Ballito and having a deep connection to the community definitely contributed to the restaurant’s unique flavour profile. From classic spicy dishes to experimental emerging trends, everything is welcome in Ballito, and Mozambik has catered to that diverse taste for the past 20 years. Even through the pandemic, riots and floods, they have stood with the community, whether it’s opening their doors to provide some normalcy in turbulent times or getting involved in local projects. Being proactive contributed to the success of the brand, and having the right partners to back innovative and sometimes uncanny ideas.
As the North Coast develops, Mozambik won’t be left behind, with a revamp that has been brewing for the

flagship store, there are other exciting additions on the way. The inclusion of a fine dining and cigar area is a bit of a passion project and adds something unique to the experience, which can be booked out for special occasions. Heading overseas, in addition to new branches in Zambia, a Mozambik is on track to open all the way in Dubai, really taking the flavours of Ballito to the world. There is also a distribution centre in the works, as they finalise the hygiene processes. Not forgetting the demand from retail stockists, local, countrywide and abroad, everyone wants a “piece”.

So, with 20 successful years behind them, what does the next 20 promise? Brett and his business partners have entrusted the brand to a team that has taken their knowledge and experience and combined it with their skills to streamline and improve on what is already there. Through the decades, one thing has not changed: Mozambik is Ballito’s darling and will remain rooted in this community for years to come.

Lindy Elmes is the founder of Wildlife Rescue, a registered non-profit organisation based in Ballito, which is dedicated to the rescue, stabilisation, and release of local wildlife. Her love for animals and a desire to alleviate the suffering of wildlife in pain and needing help inspired the creation of this organisation. Lindy has rescued feral cats and rehomed their saved kittens for many years, so this was a
natural progression to more rescues and more kinds of animals. Operating with permission from Ezemvelo Wildlife KZN, the team handles both ordinary species and Threatened or Protected Species (ToPs).
Every rescue by Wildlife Rescue is interesting and crazy, given the wild nature of the animals involved. Lindy recalls one of the most memorable rescues was that of a female monkey
struggling to give birth, “I rushed her to our wildlife vet in Umhlanga, where she performed a C-section, which I assisted with. We were so relieved when both mom and baby survived the op.” The main goal of Wildlife Rescue is to return animals to the wild in their exact place of origin as soon as possible. “If they need a longer recovery time, I get them to the best rehabilitation centre for the species in question. We always try
to reunite babies with their mothers and return them to their familiar environment, where they know their way around.”
Community support plays a crucial role in enabling Wildlife Rescue to offer its services at no cost. Despite the challenges of securing funding (since no call-out fees are charged), the organisation relies on community donations and fundraising efforts to cover costs such as petrol, food, veterinary bills, and medication. Occasionally, a donation will be offered after a rescue, but it’s not asked for, as then the public may not call it in. Lindy works tirelessly, often spending many hours at night feeding babies or caring for animals that come in during the day, and being on call 24/7. The nature of the job is spontaneous, which often leaves her unable to predict what the day will bring. “Each day, my daughters ask me what I'm doing, and I can only answer, ‘Call me tonight and I’ll tell you what I did.’”
Through social media, participation in markets and community events, educational presentations, and initiatives like road signage to alert

the public to wildlife crossings, Wildlife Rescue aims to educate and foster a community that values and takes pride in its unique wildlife. Despite the demands of the job, which she describes as a full-time, payless job done from the heart, her passion for her work is evident. “I love what I do and can’t see myself doing anything else,” Lindy says, highlighting her dedication to the cause of wildlife rescue and rehabilitation in the Ballito area.

Saltii Towels is shaking things up in Durban; they’re turning plastic waste into ultra-soft, quick-drying towels that are as stylish as they are sustainable. They use a luxurious waffle fabric that feels like a towel but is super lightweight and quick-drying. Growing up on the North Coast, they know the struggle of humid summers all too well. The towels are designed to actually work in the crazy, humid conditions we love living in.
Our absolute favourites this season are the Brenton and Robberg Summer Waffle duo. They are super trendy, following the 2025/2026 Milan chequered craze, plus they’re colourblocked in honey orange, plush pink, sky, and stormy blue. As a pair, they look so beautiful together.
More than 70 people shared stories and photos about their precious pets when we asked. Clearly, our community loves and celebrates its animals deeply, so choosing only three felt impossible. Maybe it will become a new series! We introduce three loved and well-known pets that lift spirits, spark conversations, and bring joy to daily life in Ballito.
Breed: Golden Retriever Age: 14-years-old
Brought into the family as an eight-week-old pup, Daisy was born in Bothaville, in South Africa’s Free State province. Destined to be a swimming companion, water has been her enduring passion ever since. Now, a distinguished golden-ager at fourteen, she still makes a beeline for the tidal pool, lingering as long as she’s permitted. Her gentle temperament and welcoming nature have secured her a treasured place in the North Coast community. These days, she mostly gets around in a specially crafted trolley - a true labour of love from her devoted companion, Dave. Passersby often pause to greet her, many recognising her by the small number plate that reads ‘Daisy’ and ‘Living Life ZN,’ answering the question that everyone asks. Still moving through life with her vivacious spirit, few would guess her age. With her charmingly quirky gait, joyful eyes, and unbreakable bond with Dave, Daisy epitomises the very best of life on the North Coast.

Breed: Border Collie Age: Turning five-years-old in February
Her registered name, EuroFire Full of Love, impeccably encapsulates her essence. Flint personifies it in every respect: spirited, perceptive, and unfailingly affectionate. Whether plunging into tidal pools, darting freely through Townsend Park, or bounding with uncontainable exuberance at agility training in Westville, she thrives in the outdoors. Present her with structured jumps, a verdant patch of grass, or a surface to parkour across, and it instantly becomes her personal arena. Celebrated for her effervescent energy, Flint delivers affectionate cuddles on demand and executes a clever reverse trick that invariably draws smiles. She only truly slows at nightfall; by the first glimmer of morning light, she is off again, full throttle. For Flint, life on the North Coast is a rich tapestry of open spaces, pet-friendly havens, and the pure exhilaration of embracing each new day to its fullest.

Breed: Miniature American Shepherd Age: 14 months
Chosen by her trainer-mom as a partner for agility, she was the family’s first nonrescue dog and has since proven herself both a rapid learner and an irresistible charmer. Her distinctive breed and striking blue eyes make her an unmistakable presence on daily walks along Compensation Road or on the beach. Intelligent, driven, and affectionate, she delights in the natural rock pools and the attention that seems to follow her wherever she ventures. Her playful tricks never fail to elicit smiles, and at home, her favourite toy is a humble, plastic Coca-Cola bottle. When it’s time to rest, she sprawls out like a contented little frog. Some locals know her by name, and some by the sparkle in her presence. Everyone who encounters her senses her gentle, luminous spirit. If she could speak, she would surely describe the North Coast as a safe haven of happiness, adventure, and endless toys.

WORDS SAMANTHA SUBBAN
On the ridgeline above Sheffield Beach, where the land lifts gently away from the sea, Brettenwood Coastal Estate sits in a pocket of shore that feels both sheltered and expansive. Its elevated position offers open coastal views and a sense of space, with the beach only a short drive away.
The Estate also benefits from close proximity to Ballito’s exceptional schools, restaurants, and medical care. What was once rolling sugar cane has been reimagined as a subtropical landscape where four distinct eco-zones cross paths: coastal forest, glade forest, grassland, and wetland. The result is a return to something essential; an environment that remembers itself.
Kingfishers skim the dams, weavers stitch bright nests in the reeds, morning light moves through Milkwood and Flat-crown
trees that have grown here for decadestrees rooted as part of the land’s memory. Paths wind not for spectacle, but for encounter. A breeze carries the scent of the forest one moment and the salty scent of the sea the next.
Homes here do not claim the landscape; they settle into it. Rooflines follow the contours of the hills. Materials echo tone and texture rather than compete with them. Views are not heightened into display but revealed as quiet moments: ocean glittering beyond a treeline, wetlands breathing beneath open sky, a lush green corridor unfolding just beyond a verandah.
Anchored in community and thoughtfully woven into the natural landscape, the Estate provides space for families to play, nature lovers to explore, active residents to move, and those seeking calm to simply
pause. Life here unfolds at your own pace - present when the Estate lifts into celebration, and again when morning brings only water, stillness, and sky. And yet, Brettenwood’s truest rhythm is found in the understated moments: footsteps along familiar paths, clouds mirrored in the water, the quiet warmth of a community spirit that does not need to be spoken to be felt.
Living here is an invitation to exhale, to let the natural world set the pace, to live lightly and fully, to rediscover the joy of belonging to a place - and to savour the celebrated occasions.
Brettenwood does not ask you to escape the world. It offers you a way to return to it, more grounded, more open, more alive.
An essential part of a happy summer holiday is knowing where to find flavoursome food, but with Ballito bursting with superb restaurants and coffee shops, especially for visitors or new residents, it can be daunting. We’ve asked our readers to vote for their favourite foodie spots in six categories, and here are the results:
Best Family Value:
La Piazza Continental Café and Restaurant
Has long been regarded as one of the town’s best family-value restaurants, offering a warm, welcoming environment combined with authentic Italian food.
Located at The Well Centre, it offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner and is ideal for families seeking a relaxed dining experience.
The dedicated and safe Bambini Kids Entertainment area ensures children are happily occupied while parents enjoy their meals. The menu features wood-fired pizzas, rich, flavourful pastas, and mouth-watering mains, including the popular Tomahawk steak and classic seafood options. Our readers voted La Piazza as a top family-friendly restaurant, highlighting its generous portions, superb value, and excellent service.
lapiazzaballito
Best Ice-cream:
Nothing says summer quite like the first lick of a cool, creamy icecream cone in the Ballito sunshine. But not all ice-creams are created equal, and our readers were clear about Peppe Pistacchio serving up their favourite frozen delight. With less fat, a creamier texture, using natural ingredients, and being 100% vegetarian and Halal certified, a scoop or two from this premium gelateria instantly transports you to another time and place. Choose from masterfully churned gelato flavours such as litchi, honeycomb, pistachio, pavlova, blood orange, or vanilla. Or how about something a little more chocolatey like Ferrero, Rafaello, or Nutella? Using the traditional Italian slow-churn method and only the finest ingredients ensure every scoop is pure creamy indulgence.

For exceptional sourdough pizzas conveniently delivered to your door or enjoyed on site, our readers recommend DoughPamine. Judd Campbell’s original vision was to create a dark kitchen, preparing pizzas exclusively for delivery. However, his business model quickly evolved when he started hosting parties and functions. Today, DoughPamine is most of our foodie readers’ go-to for ordering in, eating out, or having private events that call for seriously good pizza. With kiff pizza names like ‘Winnie the Poo and Piglet’, ‘Mangosuthu Buthelezi’, ‘Victoria Beckham’ and ‘Egg on Your Face’ (does not actually come with egg!) and a plethora of drinks available, fortified by an ‘BYOB (bring your own booze), no corkage’ policy, you can’t go wrong with DoughPamine.
Best BuNNy CHOW:
It’s a tie between Legacy Foods Ballito and Westbrook Bakery & Take-Away
Bunny chow is Durban’s most famous street food export and a proud symbol of KwaZulu-Natal’s rich heritage. Loved by locals and visitors alike, it captures the heart of the province’s unique food culture. No trip to Ballito is complete without a hearty bunny chow from Westbrook Bakery & Take-Away (especially their prawn bunny) or Legacy Foods Ballito at the Sangweni Tourist Information Centre. A bunny chow is a hollowed-out loaf of white bread filled with hot, fragrant curry and eaten by hand. The standard serving is a quarter loaf, though larger portions are popular with the hungry. Part of the joy lies in picking off the gravy-soaked inner walls of the

bread - a flavourful ritual that true Durbanites swear by.
Fillings range from mutton and chicken to bean or prawn, each with its own distinct flavour. Whether enjoyed seaside or shared at home, a bunny chow is more than a meal - it’s a warm, nostalgic taste of Durban tradition.

Westbrook Bakery & Take-Away: 032 943 1028

With eat-in or take-away options available, you can book a table or order online.

Best COFFee aND PastRy COmBO:
Another tie! Yoli’s Bakery is a haven for anyone seeking exceptional coffee and indulgent pastries. Their coffee, crafted using the Science of Coffee method, is rich, aromatic, and perfectly balanced, making each cup a comforting start to the day or a leisurely mid-morning treat. Complementing this are their freshly baked pastries, from flaky croissants to buttery Danish delights, all made with high-quality ingredients and meticulous attention to detail. The combination of expertly brewed coffee and melt-inyour-mouth pastries creates an irresistible experience that keeps locals and visitors returning.
Concha Bakery and Café is a must-visit for anyone who loves exceptional coffee paired with freshly baked pastries by the beach. Their speciality coffees are full-flavoured and aromatic, providing a delightful kick-start to the day. Complementing this are their artisan pastries - from golden croissants to sweet and savoury Portuguese-inspired treats, all baked with topquality ingredients. The café’s beachy outdoor ambiance and friendly service make it an ideal spot for a leisurely breakfast or a mid-morning treat. Concha is pet-friendly and centrally located, making it the perfect starting point for swimming, walking, running, or cycling along Ballito’s scenic pathways.

As the long summer holiday gains momentum, parents brace for the inevitable chorus of “I’m bored”usually followed by their children reaching for their phones or tablets. With schools closed and routines relaxed, this is the time of year when screen time tends to spike, providing an ideal opportunity to rethink digital habits and find healthier ways to keep kids entertained.
A study found that children who went five days without technology were significantly better at reading human emotions than their pluggedin peers. Less screen time has also been shown to improve sleep, boost academic performance, and reduce irritability and depression.
Boredom isn’t something to fear. In fact, it’s a catalyst for creativity. Boredom stimulates innovation. It inspires children to become active participants in their own play, rather
than passive observers behind a screen. The key to surviving the school holidays is creating a family media plan before the break begins.
Set clear boundaries around what, when, where, and how much screen time is allowed. It is important to be specific about who your children may connect with online and to ensure grandparents, babysitters, and friends are on the same page, as it will save a lot of arguments later. Set rules about what needs to be done before device time.
A simple daily structure helps children feel secure and gives the day a sense of rhythm - and it benefits adults too, reducing stress and keeping family life running smoothly.
Daily tasks, such as making the bed, eating breakfast, brushing teeth, tidying their room, reading for 30 minutes, helping with chores, and

playing outside for at least an hour, teach responsibility and earn them the reward of limited, guilt-free screen time. Many families find it helpful to allow devices only after 3 p.m., reserving mornings for activity and fresh air.
When boredom sets in, parents should see it as an opportunity rather than a problem. Dust off the classic old board games like Monopoly, Scrabble, Cluedo, 30 Seconds, UNO, and Pictionary. Build a Lego city, bake biscuits, or turn household chores into friendly competitions. Build a fort in the house, play yard cricket (even if the bat is a tennis racket), or set up a darts corner.

For something creative, get fabric paint and let the kids paint their own old T-shirts or shoes, or set out paint and old coffee mugs or river rocks for personalised treasures. If you have an old piece of furniture in need of a little TLC, let the children help with sanding and varnishing. While it might be messy, it’s also satisfying and gives them a sense of pride in their handiwork. If space allows, we recommend setting aside a dedicated creative area that doesn’t need to be tidied up every day so that projects can breathe and take on a life of their own. Kids actually love these old-school activities. The trick is to get them started. They just need to be reminded how much fun the real world can be.

We sat down with local entrepreneurs, Will Pearson and Connor Lumsden from Venero Pizza. If you haven’t heard of them before, well, I think you should know their sourdough pizza will give you abs! That’s right, you heard it here. Let’s get to know them better, shall we?
The Maker and The Marketer Will, 19, crafts amazing sourdough bases, and Connor, 26, does the media and digital marketing. They have known each other for a very long time, having been part of the same church and Bible study group, and now they’re business partners.
Will said he spent so long trying to come up with a name, with Pearson Pizza as an option, but eventually chose Venero Pizza. Coming from the Latin word ‘venerate’, which means to honour something, Will says, “I guess that’s the whole point of the business, to honour pizza, and make the best pizza we can on the North Coast.”
During lockdown, Will’s dad started making pizza whilst he was homeschooling. With a bit of time on his hands, he learned how to make pizza from his dad and started selling it. “My dad has been a big help; he has given me a lot of advice, so I give a lot of credit to him. He even lets me use his garage for free.” When Will first started, he would sell about 10 plain bases a week. The pizza started to gain traction, so they got in touch with Cookin Stores at the Lifestyle Centre because they sell Gozney ovens. “They wanted a pizza that was going to fit their brand, like a high-quality, real food kind of thing.
They let us use their ovens, which is what boosted us,” says Will.
Behind the Fun…
… is the crazy. Ever get excited when you get a call back for an event, and then reality sets in. (insert Jaws theme song). Will and Connor got a call to the Ballito Pro just over a week before the event! “Luckily, I found and trained two people to come and make them in the garage (which I have converted to a kitchen), while I was at the Pro. Many people helped me out, and it all came together really well,” says Will.
Process
According to Will, making a sourdough starterwhich they affectionately call ‘Cyril’ since it was created during lockdown and has become part of the team - is quite easy. If you’ve seen their website, you’ll know exactly what I mean. The process includes a lot of mixing, feeding, kneading, and then fermenting the dough for two days. They now make about 100-150 sourdough bases a week, and if they’re busy, then about 200. Will explains, “The dough is cold-fermented for 48 hours, giving the flavours time to deepen, which is why it tastes good.”
Memorable Experiences
When asked about some of the experiences

along the way, Will says, “I had a lot of 'dough-sasters', like the dough overfermenting in the fridge when it’s loadshedding, it’s like a dough explosion in my fridge.” Connor adds, “There was this one event where it was raining and the fridges were shortcircuiting, and I had to go out there at about 4:00 a.m. to fix it, returned home, then woke up again at 6:00 a.m. to go sell pizzas all day.”
Of course, music is a must when cooking up a storm. Connor mentions that there’s some overlap with their taste in music. “We take turns to play music,” Will adds. “Sometimes he plays heavy metal, and I just want to leave. And then I play country, and then he wants to leave. Haha. But we don't bicker over it.”
Right now, they offer plain and margherita options on their websites, as it’s easier to freeze and you can have more fun adding the toppings of your preference; but at events, like pizza
parties and weddings, they have a list of exotic toppings. “I’ve tried to keep everything basic, and the ingredients speak for themselves. I’ve used the best cheese from The Gourmet Greek from the Midlands, and the sauce is basically just tomatoes and oregano herbs. We have an exotic toppings list: bacon, strawberry reduction, blueberry, camembert, fig jam, prosciutto, rocket, biltong, and feta.”
Their goal is to enable others to replicate their business with the same product and model they have now, “Having a Venero Pod that can be franchised and replicated. So we’d empower people like me to start their own pizza business that’s simple to run, makes good money, and is fun,” says Will.
“Sometimes it feels like eating glass, but you just have to eat the glass (keep going). There’s no quick way to be successful; we’re still building this business. But yeah, if you have an idea, give it a try, and if it doesn’t work, what’s the worst that could happen? Rather not have regrets.” But something that scared him from starting a business was the saying ‘One in 10 businesses succeed,’ although he believes that the reason for this is that people just give up.

LET GO. ANYWHERE.

Here’s how to stay protected, energised, and stylish while making the most of Ballito’s beaches.

keeps you refreshed. A back-up water bottle makes refills easy.
Pack light, fuss-free bites like dried fruit, nuts, protein bars, and fresh fruit. Grazing throughout the day will keep your energy steady, so you can swim, stroll, and sunbathe without the mid-afternoon slump.
Hats, sunnies, and oversized towels are a given. Don’t overlook a surf suit - perfect over a bikini for diving into waves without wardrobe worries.
Aholiday is having nothing to do and all day to do it in - and nowhere captures that spirit better than the beach.
Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic” perfectly evokes it: “smell the sea, feel the sky and let your soul and spirit fly.” Whether you’re planning lazy sun-soaked days or spontaneous dips in the surf, the key to a carefree seaside escape is being well-prepared - starting with a perfectly packed beach bag.
On the North Coast in December, sunscreen isn’t optional. A waterproof SPF 50 protects against harsh summer rays, while an SPF 50 zinc formula for your face stays put even in the surf.
Eight glasses of water a day is standard, but summer beach days demand more. An oversized insulated jug filled with ice water, topped up regularly with water,
A beach tent with sand anchors provides superior shade, is easy to carry, and won’t blow away. Wet wipes and refuse bags keep your spot tidy, saving trips to the bin and leaving more time to relax.
With the right preparation, your beach days on the North Coast can be carefree, sun-kissed, and thoroughly enjoyable, where your only concern is which wave to chase next.

Summer on the North Coast is all about sunshine, salty hair, and good times shared over great food and drinks. Whether you’re beach-bound, poolside, or hosting one of those legendary impromptu sundowners with friends, the last thing anyone wants is to spend hours in the kitchen - life’s too short for that!
We’ve rounded up a few easy, tasty summer snacks you can whip up in minutes. They’re perfect for keeping the vibes light, fresh, and delicious all season long - and still leave you plenty of time to kick back and kuier with your crew.
All you need for the most craveworthy charcuterie chips is one bag of kettle-fried chips, a packet of bruschetta, a brie or camembert wheel, honey, and chives or microgreens of your choice. Any of these ingredients can be varied according to your personal preference to add your unique touch to the dish.
Here’s how it works: Empty the bag of chips into an oven tray or ovenproof ceramic plate and spread them evenly. Cut or tear the cold meat into pieces and distribute evenly across the bed of chips. Do the same with the cheese.

Place the tray in an oven preheated to 180°C and bake until the cheese starts to melt. Remove from the oven and generously drizzle with honey. Next, sprinkle chopped chives and bits of microgreens all over the dish - not only for striking pops of colour but also subtle bursts of flavour. And voilà - the most moreish plate of charcuterie chips on the North Coast!
This aesthetically pleasing platter is so easy to assemble, it should be a crime! Simply pick an assortment of your three favourite cream cheese flavours and empty them onto different sections of the same large serving platter. Smooth over so that the different cream cheeses meet and touch, but don’t mix. Next, finely dice the cucumber, onion, tomato, and yellow peppers.

Mix the medley of fresh produce together and arrange it in a diagonal line across the platter of dips to create a decorative, sash-like line. Sprinkle a few edible flowers over the diced salad items to add extra vibrant pops of colour to this tasty creation. Serve with your choice of savoury crackers and enjoy!
Nothing says summer quite like a colourful platter of fresh, seasonal fruit. Juicy, sweet, and naturally vibrant, this easy-to-assemble treat is as beautiful as it is delicious. Whether you’re sharing it at a sunny brunch, a casual pool hang, or just chilling on the patio with a good book, it’s the kind of guilt-free treat that screams North Coast

vibes. The amount of fruit we used was determined by the size of our serving board: a quarter watermelon, half a pineapple, four ripe and juicy nectarines, a bunch of green grapes, and two kiwi fruits. The trick to an attractive fruit platter is contrasting colours and precise cutting. Experimenting with cutting techniques can be a lot of fun, but don’t get caught up in the technicalities - the most important thing is to gather a variety of your favourite fresh fruit on a plate and enjoy nature’s spread.
A huge thank you to Food Lover’s Market Ballito for making our dreamy platters come true.

Custom pop culture pieces from your favourite worlds made 3D by Fanboy Collectibles.
Stories stay with us; whether it’s a movie you enjoyed, a video game that really tested your patience, or a series that felt bittersweet to finish. The characters and their experiences come to life for us, resonating with some personal accounts we have as we join them on their journey. Like any great adventure, you can collect and keep souvenirs that will remind you of these stories and characters who made an impact on you. As pop culture enthusiasts, the team at Fanboy Collectibles could relate to wanting to have keepsakes from your favourite medium of entertainment. So, they endeavoured to locally create these mementos for the fans.
More specifically, they 3D print and hand-paint figurines of pop culture-inspired characters, from comic books and movies to video games, anime, and more. Fanboy Collectibles also does wall art, hand-illustrated or printed posters, canvas prints, wall scrolls, and wearable merch such as T-shirts. Since 2022, inspired by the skill that goes into animated art, especially, they wanted to show appreciation for this art form. “We always found animation and comic art to be an art form that many people don't
give recognition to,” they explain. Seeing the increasing interest and potential in 3D printing, they invested in a machine, essentially bringing their passion into a tangible 3D format.
The process for making these models begins with finding and buying the digital models. “We then scale or modify them with 3D slicing software where needed. Once happy, we print, prepare the models for painting, and handpaint them.” Getting the colours, textures, and shadows as close to the original art as possible, they are constantly trying different painting techniques, which also makes them unique. Years of learning to illustrate by hand and digitally, and painting, eventually became second nature as Fanboy Collectibles continued to get better with every rendition. “It is a huge compliment when people ask where we import them from; we have to correct them and tell them it was made in our home office studio!”
Seeing the interest in pop culture grow, as someone who enjoys different types of media, it’s been awesome to know we have local people who are creating these for those who enjoy it and
see the positive reception from the immediate and outlying communities. “The business has grown since 2022, with repeat customers,” they say. Although it is still considered a niche interest, Fanboy Collectibles has been busy with orders, custom projects, and requests for existing pieces. “We have couriered custom orders locally in South Africa, with some pieces going to Mozambique and further overseas.”
Expanding their offering, apart from coming up with new models on a weekly basis, Fanboy Collectibles have started a model car range for car enthusiasts, which could also be a great Christmas gift. Staying local yet reaching out of KZN, they have just started a studio in Johannesburg with another artist joining the ranks, ready to grow the market for custom collectables in another province!
Looking for a miniature Ghostface, Goku, Volkswagen Beetle, or a custom piece of you and your furry family member? Proudly local, Fanboy Collectibles are crafting memories and fandoms, one hand-painted model at a time.

While the fundamentals of human physiology haven’t changed, diet culture has become increasingly chaotic. Social media fuels quick fixes and extreme trends. Before-and-after transformations, challenge videos, and tightly knit “way of eating” groups create the illusion of guaranteed success. Yet food fads eventually fade, and it always comes back to what works: balance and moderation. Health professionals have long warned that extreme or overly restrictive diets rarely deliver sustainable results. “All-or-nothing” diets tend to be extreme, and health professionals agree that our bodies don’t do well under extreme conditions. With so many competing messages, it’s no wonder that people feel overwhelmed.
In response, a quieter shift seems to be settling in. Balance, moderation, and personalised nutrition are gaining traction as more individuals recognise that lasting health doesn’t come from the latest miracle plan. To help cut through the confusion, we turned to associate dietitian Kerryn Wuth of Nutrition
Innovated, who has been practising for 22 years. After qualifying in 2003, Kerryn worked in rural KZN hospitals and major tertiary centres in London before returning home to build a private practice specialising in sports nutrition, weight loss, and functional nutrition.

Her work centres on teaching people how their daily choices influence both their wellness and their risk of disease.
“If you feel the best version of yourself, then you are well, and you are actively preventing disease,” she says. For her, there is no universal formula. Every person arrives with different goals, health histories, and lifestyles, and each requires an individualised approach to nutrition. However, the basic principle remains consistent: what you eat every day affects how you function. In a chaotic, socialmedia-driven diet landscape, Kerryn stresses that despite the hype, lasting health still comes down to personalised choices based on balance and moderation.
That doesn’t mean restriction. “Everything is allowed in moderation,” she explains. Her guideline is the familiar 80/20 approach - eating well most of the time, with room for treats in the remaining

“If you feel the best version of yourself, then you are well, and you are actively preventing disease”

20 per cent. It’s a sustainable mindset that supports long-term health rather than shortlived results. According to Kerryn, most of the diets on the continuum of popular eating plans have their place, but usually only for short-term therapeutic use, such as treating insulin resistance or allergies. Once the underlying issue is resolved, she says, the goal is to return to balance and moderation - much in the same way as chemotherapy is used to treat disease, not maintain health. She reviews five common eating plans and their short-term benefits when used appropriately.
Right off the bat, Kerryn points out that the keto diet is a high-fat diet and not a lowcarb diet as often punted by enthusiasts. She describes it as a diet intervention to treat insulin resistance, not for permanent application. The keto eating plan is designed to steer the body into ketosis, a metabolic state where fat, rather than glucose, becomes the primary source of fuel. When fat intake is increased to 70-75% and carbohydrate intake is reduced to only 5%, the body produces ketones for energy. This eating plan is loaded with high-fat foods such as avocado, nut

butter, hummus, pesto, olives, nuts and healthy oils. It should, ideally, be followed with professional guidance.
Contrary to common belief, a plant-based eating plan does not exclude animal products but simply prioritises foods that come from plants. While it emphasises vegetables, fruit, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds, animal products like meat, dairy, and eggs are included in smaller quantities. According to Kerryn, this approach typically comprises 50% plant-based foods, 25% starch, and 25% protein, closely reflecting the

balance and moderation recommended by health professionals. People often choose it for health benefits, sustainability, or personal preference.
The key feature of a vegan eating pattern is the exclusion of all animal products, including meat, fish, dairy, eggs, and animal-derived ingredients such as gelatin and honey. Instead, it focuses entirely on plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and plantbased alternatives. While a well-planned vegan diet can provide all essential nutrients,
extra attention is usually needed for vitamin B12, iron, omega-3, and protein sources that are more easily obtained from animal products. Kerryn says she wouldn’t necessarily recommend a vegan eating plan for reasons other than religious, cultural, or ethical.
While excluding meat, poultry, and fish, a vegetarian diet allows varying degrees of animal-derived products such as dairy and eggs, along with vegetables, fruit, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, depending on the type of vegetarianism. Kerryn describes vegetarianism as a more sustainable and healthier option than veganism, but notes that nutritional deficiencies such as B12, choline, protein, and iron can still occur due to a reduced intake of animal products.
The carnivore diet can be therapeutic for people with a salicylate allergy (natural chemicals in plants that protect them from pests and disease) - yes, it’s possible to be allergic to vegetables. This meat-centric eating pattern consists almost entirely of animal products and excludes all plant-based foods: no vegetables, fruit, nuts, or seeds. Instead, it centres on meat, fish, eggs, and varying amounts of dairy, depending on individual tolerance. Because it removes entire food groups, the carnivore diet can result in nutrient gaps, particularly in fibre, vitamin C, and certain phytonutrients. This way of eating is very specific and only benefits a very small percentage of the population. It is not recommended.

When a Gauteng family set their sights on retiring in the quiet seaside village of Sheffield Beach, they knew their coastal home would need to be more than just a holiday escape. It had to be functional, beautiful, and perfectly suited to the laid-back tempo of coastal living. What began as a plan to improve flow and maximise space soon became a top-to-bottom reinvention, transforming the property into what they now describe as their “just right” holiday house and future forever home. From the outset, the Cleasbys were clear about what needed to change. While the home offered generous verandahs and multiple levels, the layout didn’t suit their lifestyle. The biggest challenge was incorporating the expansive top-floor verandah into the main structure and enclosing the middle-floor verandah for more usable indoor space. At the same
time, the lower bedroom level needed re-configuring to accommodate visiting family and friends comfortably.
Integrating the upper verandah proved to be one of the most rewarding decisions. It allowed the couple to add a study with expansive views - “a spectacular vantage point,” they said - and extend their main bedroom, dressing area, and bathroom. The home’s proportions shifted; rooms felt more purposeful, and natural light became a defining feature. Downstairs, the transformation was even more dramatic. The entire lower level was reimagined with two spacious en-suite guest suites. The owners said their friends and family “absolutely love” these rooms, which now offer luxury and privacy - a must for a house that becomes a revolving door of visitors during the festive season.
Hosting loved ones in the new space created an abundance of memories, from laughter-filled gatherings to long, relaxed days overlooking the warm Indian Ocean

Architect Who Delivers Choosing the right contractor was critical, especially given the distance between Sheffield Beach and their Gauteng home. After reviewing several candidates, the Cleasby family selected Willie Piater from Vision Projects. He came highly recommended, not only for the quality of his work but also for his hands-on approach; previous clients assured the couple that he was consistently on site, actively involved, and committed to the details - a reputation that proved well deserved. Willie immediately stepped in during any fallbacks, ensuring the project stayed on track. The homeowners emphasised that there were no headaches and described the overall experience as “surprisingly stressfree” - rare praise for a renovation of this scale. Managing the project remotely could have been challenging, but the couple never felt out of the
loop. Willie communicated constantly, sending photos, videos, and updates. “It felt like we were there,” they noted. His experience and instincts were invaluable when decisions had to be made from afar. “There was always a solution,” they said. Professionalism, transparency, and financial clarity were recurring themes when discussing Vision Projects. Each stage of the renovation was clearly outlined, allowing progress payments to be handled confidently. Deadlines were met, workmanship was solid, and the final product exceeded expectations. The family celebrated their first Christmas in the revamped home during the 2024 holiday season, marking a milestone that made all the effort worthwhile. Hosting loved ones in the new space created an abundance of memories, from laughter-filled gatherings to long, relaxed days overlooking the warm Indian Ocean. The newly
enclosed verandah became the star of the show, elevating the entertainment area and offering a breezy haven for festive celebrations. Guests were equally impressed by the redesigned downstairs suites, and compliments flowed freely throughout the holiday. Reflecting on the journey, the homeowners could not be more pleased. Renovations can easily become overwhelming, but their experience was, in their words, “a seamless one.” The transformation delivered on their expectations and surpassed them to the point that the alterations feel entirely natural. “It looks like the house was always like this,” they said, praising the outcome as a testament to thoughtful design and skilled execution.
Looking ahead to another December by the sea, the Cleasbys are eager to create new memories in a home that finally reflects both who they are and the life they envision. What was once a colossal renovation project has become the beginning of a new chapter, framed by ocean views, shared experiences, and the promise of many more holidays to come.

Weekly buses from Ballito, Umhlanga, Zululand and Pietermaritzburg for returning boarders.
Be a part of one of SA’s leading independent traditional boys’ schools.

Rockets Padel + Social Club isn’t your average Padel club. Young, a little edgy and a whole lot of fun, but for the whole fam (however you define that - friends, kids, or co-workers), the team at Rockets has really set out to blast the Ballito Padel scene into a whole new social stratosphere.
When they began this journey, founders Brett Hedderwick and Brandon Mateus set a mandate to provide two things: a sporting club for the whole family and a facility that ensures no matter who enters, every person leaves a winner and feels part of their new growing community. So far, this mission has been pretty successful, with the facilities garnering the support of a great number of
regulars - fondly referred to as Rocketeers.
What can you expect when you hit Rockets, apart from a fist bump from your teammate for enjoying the vibes? Five indoor courts, perfect to escape that KZN sun or its counterpoint - a rainy day. A Singles Court for the couples or mates who struggled to complete their 4-person match-up. A Centre Court, with Eyes on Live: a state-of-the-art feature that records match highlights as well as your full game for instant playback and bragging rights. There’s also racket hire, a kids' play area, and a jumping castle with child minders on duty. Their on-site MBA-certified Padel coach, Deven Mancer, is available for guidance and one-on-one sessions.
Two of the most exciting features, though, take us

off the courts. As official Bullpadel partners (a world-leading Padel brand), Rockets Padel + Social are KZN's only frontend authorised retailer. This means you can swing by and grab some of the latest and greatest merch before anyone else does, but even better, they provide a Bullpadel selection of demo rackets, allowing you to trial your personal preference before completing your purchase. The other massively exciting addition is their upstairs eatery + bar, The Social Club. There, you can fuel your day with their special, locally roasted, fresh-ground coffee or settle into a casual dining menu. We’re talking about wood-fired Sourdough Pizzas, seriously good Smash Burgers, Breakfast, Wraps, a comprehensive Bar, and more.
There are loads of cool events, tournaments, their own league, innovations (glow-in-the-dark play has also just launched), and weekly socials, which cater to everyone from beginner to big time, and from little legends to badass ballies.
So, Ballito and North Coast community, if you’re game, get to Rockets Padel + Social.

Test your skill on the various simulation games, as you fight back hordes of aliens, armies of hostile machines, or shoot jet streams of water at inbound enemy helicopters

Looking at the journeys and achievements of young athletes
Any sport is challenging and demanding of its athletes, and Taekwondo is no exception. Children, especially, can gain from the discipline and physical benefits by staying active. We've got two exceptional children who are excelling in this competitive sport. Dominic Judge and Lily Rae Faulds are showing us that age is just a number when it comes to reaching your goals!
At just eight years old, Dominic already achieved a 1st Dan Black Belt! His journey began just before his fourth birthday, training at the Martial Arts Masters Academy, and he has since received guidance and instruction from esteemed professionals in the practice. He has trained with Senior Master Vladimir Grachev, an 8th Dan Black Belt, President of the Global Taekwondo Federation (GTF) South Africa and owner of Ballito Martial Arts Masters Academy. Dominic had the pleasure of attending a seminar training session with Grand Master Kim Yong-Woon from Korea, where he studied the Art of Hapkido which includes self defence, weapons training such as swords and nunchaku as well as gun and knife defence. He was also fortunate to train with Senior Master William Rosado from Puerto Rico at a further seminar that took place in Ballito.
In the five years he has been competing in taekwondo, he has achieved much for someone so young! In 2024, at the National Taekwondo Championships, he

brought home five gold medals, earning him the title of five-time National Champion. This year, he earned three gold and two silver medals, which also earned him his Provincial Colours for the sport.
Despite all of his achievements, Dominic continues to train consistently three times a week both at home and at the academy, embodying what it means to be a martial artist and inspiring others to work hard for their dreams.

Ever heard of lacto-fermentation? It is a method where salt-brine preserves vegetables by killing harmful bacteria, allowing good bacteria to turn sugar into lactic acid, and giving them their zesty flavour. I made pickled vegetables, including cucumbers, cabbage, onions, carrots, and radishes, using this technique, adding beneficial probiotics and electrolytes. You can use them to elevate your sandwiches, wraps, tacos, curries, or Christmas leftovers!
Ingredients
• 2 tbsp salt
• 4 cups of water
• coriander and black pepper seeds
• sliced garlic
• veggie or fruit of choice
• bay leaves (to keep it crispy!)
Method
Mix the salt and water until the salt dissolves. Slice your veggies and add them to a sterilised glass jar. Add the garlic, coriander, and black pepper seeds. Top with the salt water. Allow it to ferment at room temperature for several days until you get your desired level of sourness, then refrigerate.
A favourite right now - chia seeds! High in fibre, so be sure to have a little every day before having this portion, especially if you’re not used to a high-fibre diet.
Ingredients
• 2 tbsp chia seeds
• 1/2 cup milk of choice, water, or yoghurt
• syrup (option)
• cinnamon (optional)
• toppings - I used full-fat plain yoghurt, chocolate chips, and golden syrup (shhh!). You can use fresh fruits, granola, and nuts, or any flavour combination you like.
Method
Mix the chia seeds, milk/water/yoghurt, cinnamon, and syrup in a jar and leave it in the fridge. Stir the mixture after a few hours to break up any lumps and let it set overnight. Add your toppings and enjoy!

December. That magical time when calendars explode, mince pies multiply, and “I’ll start in January” becomes the national anthem. But here’s the truth: your body doesn’t take a holiday. Muscles don’t know it’s Christmas. Joints don’t understand New Year’s resolutions. And your metabolism certainly isn’t waiting for you to catch up in February.
The Science Bit (Don’t Worry, It’s Quick)
When you stop moving, your body starts adapting in the wrong direction. Muscle fibres shrink, insulin sensitivity drops, and you feel more tired, not less. On the flip side, even short bursts of activity - ten squats before your shower, a brisk walk after lunch, or a quick plank while the kettle boils does send a strong signal to your nervous system: “Stay sharp, stay strong.” That’s neuroplasticity in action. Your brain loves it when your body moves.
Practical Festive Protocols
• Earn Your Pudding - No, not with guilt, but with a quick 15-minute bodyweight blast before family lunch. Pushups, squats, lunges, repeat. You’ll eat guilt-free and actually digest better.
• Movement Snacks - Think of activities like snacking. Instead of chips, sneak in little doses of exercise throughout the day. Calf raises while brushing your teeth, core squeezes while driving, or even a playful wrestle with the kids.
• Walk and Talk - Family catch-ups are better done strolling than sitting. Walk off the trifle together. Science says digestion and blood sugar levels will thank you.
• keep it Fun - Fitness doesn’t need to look like punishment. Play touch rugby on the beach, kick a ball around the garden, or teach Granny how to plank (she’ll surprise you).

Burnout doesn’t just come from work; it comes from overeating, under-moving, and over-promising. Balance is built on three pillars: movement, nutrition, and rest. Aim to keep two of the three consistent during December, and you’ll survive the holidays without needing a total January overhaul.
If you want guidance beyond these festive hacks, I’ve got you covered:
• Launch Lifestyle App - workouts, nutrition, and practical tools at your fingertips: https://launchfit.app/
• Group classes at Sugar Rush Park - sweat, laugh, and move together
• Private training - neurotypical and neurodiverse clients welcome
• School coaching at Dolphin Coast Pre-Primary
• Kids Sports Group at Simbithi — Tuesdays and Thursdays at 15:30, open to all kids, running through the holidays to keep them active, busy, and social
• Digital Cookbook - because eating well should taste amazing
Let’s finish the year strong, not sluggish. I’ll see you moving. Even in December.

There’s something wonderfully unique about December on the KZN North Coast. Maybe it’s the smell of sunscreen mixed with gammon, litchis being sold at the roadside, or the sight of fairy lights strung across palm trees. Whatever it is, a Ballito festive season is a blend of family fun, sunshine, and community warmth that makes this coastline such a special place to call home.
For locals, the build-up to December is, however, always a mix of excitement and preparation. We know what’s coming. The familiar buzz that sweeps in with the summer holidays. The beaches get busier, the shops a little fuller, and ice becomes a more scarce commodity. It’s the annual reminder that we live in one of the most desirable destinations in South Africa, a place where families from all over come to rest, reconnect, and soak up the coastal magic we get to enjoy year-round. I recall as a budding entrepreneur growing up in the area, we would find ways to try and take advantage of the increased foot traffic. My brother and I would rummage around our garage and gather all our bodyboards, surfboards, flippers, wetsuits, and beach umbrellas, and head down to Thompson’s Bay to rent them to unprepared holiday-makers. The money was fairly good, but usually didn’t make it off the beach and often remained with the icecream salesman.
With the influx of visitors, there is a certain art to living in Ballito during the festive rush. Locals become experts in planning their shopping trips early in the morning, slipping out for a quick surf before the crowds arrive, and taking the scenic route home when Ballito

Drive looks like a Christmas conga line. But truthfully, it’s all part of the territory. The energy of the season has its own rhythm, and it’s good for locals to remember that most of them started as holiday-makers, so some perspective isn’t a bad thing. Most of the growth and development of the area is thanks to it being such a desirable holiday and lifestyle destination, and the secret was let out ages ago. There is, however, a real sense of pride in being part of a community that welcomes so many visitors each year. The holidaymakers bring fresh energy. Families laughing over dripping ice-creams, kids discovering the joy of a first ocean swim, grandparents walking the promenade at sunrise. They remind us of what drew us here in the first place.
Behind the scenes, it’s the locals who keep the wheels turning. The restaurant teams greet guests with smiles, the surf instructors teach wide-eyed beginners, the shop owners stay open till late, and numerous people ensure our beaches stay clean, safe, and welcoming. Ballito really does pull together this time of year, and it’s in those small moments of kindness and the connection that our true community spirit shines through.
By January, as the tempo slows and the beaches grow quieter again, there’s a familiar mix of relief and appreciation. We wave goodbye to the visitors and once again settle into our coastal rhythm, enjoying everything the area has to offer. Here's to a joyful and safe festive season for all.
