PUBLISHER

Lorinda Scott lorinda@fabmags.co.za

TNOTE EDITOR'S

here’s always something special about our August edition. Maybe it’s the way the stories land a little deeper. Or maybe it’s just the simple truth: women in our lives carry a lot, and they do it with a kind of strength that’s both quiet and unmistakable.

Through decades of determination, women have been reshaping what leadership, care, and contribution look like. As the dynamics of community and society continue to morph, what remains constant, though, are the deeply valued qualities of empathy, resilience, intuition, and the ability to handle complexity with grace. These aren’t soft skills. They’re essential strengths, and they continue to shape our communities in the ways that matter.

Personally, I owe much of who I am to the incredible women in my life. I was raised by a devoted mother whose sacrifices and unwavering belief in a better future for her children laid the foundation for everything I’ve become. Her love was steady and unshakable, and her dreams for us were way, way bigger than her own.

In marriage, I always say that Lorinda choosing me all those years ago was the best thing to happen to me. Her strength has never dimmed even when life threw curveballs. Her belief in our family and how she approaches challenges has been a steady, guiding rhythm in the life we’ve built together. She’s taught me that real partnership isn’t about roles (unless it comes to who makes the coffee in the morningthen it’s me!). It's about presence, humility, unconditional love and walking forward together. And now, Lorinda and I get to watch and learn from the next generation. Our daughter and daughter-in-law continue

to expand our perspective in ways we didn’t expect but really do appreciate. They’re clear-eyed and kind, feisty, challenging in all the right ways, and fiercely protective of the values and legacy they’re helping shape. It’s exciting to watch and humbling too.

So, for me, this edition is a tribute - not in a grand, performative way, but in a grounded, deeply respectful one. From Amanda Kobus’s story of motherhood, military service, and powerlifting (yes, all in one life!) to Rose Ngalo’s rise from domestic worker to soughtafter dressmaker, there’s no shortage of inspiration here. I also think you’ll enjoy reading “The Heart in Business,” “She’s the Boss,” and “Unapologetically Her” - all really powerful stories in this edition.

I love that this magazine gets to tell all these stories. And that with each edition, we uncover more. That says something about the kind of community we’re building. One worth celebrating.

Lastly, I want to steal a moment to celebrate Ceagan and Courtney’s wedding! I love weddings - but nothing is more special than seeing your own children find the right person and commit to a life together. The wedding was great fun with loads of laughter, dancing, and what is now officially a tradition: the midnight hot dogs!

Congratulations, Ceags and Courts. Here’s to a life filled with happiness, adventure, and love.

When I left corporate marketing after 15 years to start my own business, I thought marketing myself would be easy. Well, it wasn’t! I was overwhelmed; I was unsure where to start and seduced by marketing shortcuts but they lacked the clarity and strategy my business actually needed. It felt like I’d forgotten everything I knew. I was lost. But then I stopped, took a breath, and returned to what I used in corporate: strategy. That’s when things started to shift because I finally had a blueprint to follow.

As a business owner, if you’ve ever felt like you’re doing everything but still not getting results, you’re not alone. Fifty per cent of small businesses don’t have a marketing strategy - and it shows. Without a plan, you end up guessing, posting randomly, and hoping something sticks. It’s exhausting. And expensive. The businesses that do have a clear strategy are the ones that grow sustainably, connect deeply with their audience, and get real, trackable results.

Because Data Doesn’t Lie

According to Forbes, companies that use data-driven marketing are five times more likely to increase profitability than those who don’t. Why? Because they stop wasting time and money on what might work and start investing in what actually does. They’re not reacting; they’re intentionally building momentum, connection, and conversion. A strong marketing strategy gives you more than structure - it gives you confidence, direction, and insight. It takes your energy and channels it into impact.

Less Chaos, more Clarity. Here’s How: Time, ability, and budget - the three things every business owner is low on, yet expected to master like magic. A marketing strategy helps you prioritise where to invest each one for the best return. Here is what you need:

• Do your research - Know your market, competitors, and what makes your audience tick.

• Define your audience and goals - Clarity on who you serve and what you’re aiming for sets the tone for everything else.

• Craft your unique voice and message - This is what sets you apart and builds an emotional connection.

• Build a plan and choose your channels wiselyNo more “be everywhere” panic; just smart, focused action.

• Track, learn, pivot - Data is gold. It tells you what’s working, what to improve, and where to double down.

A marketing strategy gives you the power to say “oh yes” to what works, and a confident “nope” to time-wasters - saving your sanity, budget, and coffee supply.

There’s no universal formula. But there is a way forward: a feel-good, focused marketing strategy that reflects your business, your voice, and your goals - and makes your time and budget work smarter, not harder.

WORDS ClaiRE BUTlER

2023, 2024, 2025

Born out of a love for fashion and an obsession with beautiful, wearable design, Saint&Summer began as a passion project with a shared vision: to create a brand that feels like sunshine. think high-impact style with a carefree spirit - pieces you’ll reach for daily, whether you're dressing up, dressing down, or just dressing to feel good. But it’s also so much more than that. We’re a proudly South african brand, led by a small, hands-on team that designs every piece with intention. From fabric selection to final fit, everything we create is considered, curated, and unapologetically bold. We’re obsessed with detail, rooted in local creativity, and committed to bringing you bespoke, limited-edition designs that make everyday dressing feel like something special.

So, what inspired the birth of Saint&Summer?

it all started with a fashion void we felt deeply, waiting to be filled with bold, fashion-forward footwear that didn’t compromise on comfort. as frequent travellers and lovers of local design, we set out to create a brand that blended global inspiration with South

Where Bold Style Meets Effortless Living

african soul - a brand that stood for effortless confidence and everyday luxury. What started with a few standout sandals has grown into a full lifestyle offering: from statement shoes and bags to elevated wardrobe heroes.

What makes us unique?

Our collections are small-batch and designer-led, with a focus on high-quality craftsmanship, striking details, and silhouettes that hold their own. think animal prints, sequins, studs and faux furs - all balanced with clean lines and functional fit. Our pieces are designed to be hero pieces that can stand alone, but also work effortlessly together, perfect for building a wardrobe with personality and purpose. We design for women who want to feel powerful in their own skin without sacrificing playfulness or practicality. Our aesthetic is fearless and feminine, always unexpected and always wearable.

Who is the Saint&Summer shopper? She’s stylish, curious, and never afraid to take a risk. She mixes high with low, vintage with new, and

always adds her own twist. Whether she’s strutting through a city street, lounging on a coastal escape, or showing up for brunch, she dresses with intention and confidence. She doesn’t chase trends - she sets them.

Our design process is inspired by real life

each collection is a story, fuelled by travel, lifestyle, music, and mood. From a raffia tote reminiscent of summer in Bali to a leopard coat inspired by a vintage market find in Paris, every drop is deeply personal and proudly South african. We’re always pushing the boundary between statement and staple, while never compromising on comfort, fit, or feel. Behind the brand is a small, passionate team involved in every detail - from designing, styling and shooting, to chatting with you in-

store or on instagram. We're local, we're loud, and we live and breathe Saint&Summer

Speaking of stores…

Our concept store in Ballito is a physical expression of everything we stand for: fun, fearless fashion in a space that feels welcoming and warm. With pops of colour, curated collections and textured touches, it’s where real style meets real life.

What’s next?

We’re beyond excited about our

Wild at Heart winter collection which features fierce prints, luxe fabrics, and cold-weather essentials that layer like a dream. Plus, we’re expanding our accessories line with even more bags and shoes that blur the line between statement and stapleand planning new drops, pop-ups, store openings, and a fresh new take on men’s activewear.

But the heartbeat of the brand? it’s you. Our community of bold, fashion-forward people who wear

their style with pride, tag us in their looks, and support local with heart and intention. Whether online or in-store, we’re building something special - together. Because at the end of the day, Saint&Summer isn’t just about fashion. it’s about how fashion makes you feel. and we want you to feel good. Bold. unstoppable. always.

Seven local business women share their story and a piece of advice

Huizemark Real Estate

Interest in Real Estate

To be honest, MJ went on a hunting trip in 2019 and came home with a Huizemark property franchise! Not the biltong I was expecting! Real estate found me, and not the other way around. I wanted more time with my daughter, Carli. At the time, I was working as a business analyst and travelling often meant missing special moments, especially without family support in KZN. I was not convinced about this real estate journey, but I sat in Linc in December 2019, and the Lord just promised that it would be okay, and we have never looked back since.

Matching the Right Home

I just listen, you don’t need to be a salesperson to be really successful in real estate. People have a need; they just got married and bought their first home, or they are expecting their first child. What a magical experience to be a part of! Imagine families 30 years from now, reminiscing about the home where they grew up, had their Christmas lunches, and planned beautiful birthday parties. If you listen, people will tell you exactly what they need.

Fuelling the Passion

The promise that the Lord has given us and the incredible people you meet, help, and walk a journey with is everything. Most days, I can fetch my girls from school, and the flexibility is great. Working with the best team and beautiful clients, and showing up for them, keeps me motivated.

Collins Residential

Passion for Property

What I love most about my role in marketing property developments is witnessing the transformation - it’s powerful to go from an idea on paper to developing whole neighbourhoods and watching families emotionally connect to a place. Beyond that, I love property as an asset class - you can manage it yourself, see the appreciation in value, and feel genuinely connected to what you've invested in.

Staying ahead means embracing continuous learning, tapping into different platforms, and being curious

Lessons from the Market

The biggest lesson is simple: get in early. The earlier you start, the more value you’ll gain over time. Even if it’s small, just start by buying a property! I’ll never forget my first purchase. I was in my early 20s, and the bank initially declined my bond application. I was devastated, but my mom said, “It’s just numbers. Sit down and make it work.” So I did! I found a flatmate, reshuffled my priorities, and bought the property. I sold it five years later just as the property market was heading into a boom. That first leap of faith gave me financial momentum with a valuable learning from an early age.

Advice to My Younger Self Starting Out

Building Client Relationships

It's about sparking a sense of possibility. I aim to ignite the imagination, showing what could be, without overpromising. Authenticity is everything. I don’t believe in overselling or hype. I’d rather let credibility build organically, through real outcomes. This means respecting people’s intelligence and aspirations in order to create something meaningful. Integrity is what allows a relationship to last well after the first transaction has taken place.

In Marketing, you need to be flexible and always look for variety (that USP)! The industry evolves rapidly thanks to progressive technology, new communication platforms, and dynamic approaches to marketing. Staying ahead means embracing continuous learning, tapping into different platforms, and being curious. It also means staying tuned in to the environments around you. It takes action to achieve. Initiative matters. Believe in the possible.

Ngozi Collection

The Birth of Ngozi

From humble beginnings as a hobby in 2020, Ngozi Collection blossomed into a thriving small leather business during the pandemic. Beginning in my garage with hand-stitching leather, I transitioned to an industrial machine gifted on my birthday. One creation led to another, eventually amassing enough stock for a roadside stall owned by my mother in Knysna. Subsequently, receiving numerous private orders expanded our presence to several stockists across South Africa.

Inspiration

Inspired by simplicity and practicality for everyday use, I find excitement in working with

my hands, feeling leather textures, and crafting durable products.

Proudest Moment

In April 2022, I hired my first staff member, and we've since grown into a team of nine, working around the clock at our premises at Sugar Rush Park. Sourcing leather, cutting, preparing, sewing, and retailing occur on-site. We procure our leather, hardware, and haberdashery from local suppliers around Pinetown and Durban.

Advice for Women

Don't wait for perfection to launch - refinement comes through realworld feedback!

Dr Bhavna Jugadoe

Eye Specialist

Why Eye Care

My mum was short-sighted and she always wanted me to help improve her eyesight. As one’s vision is invaluable, helping patients to restore their eyesight is extremely rewarding. Ophthalmology is an intricate field with a great balance of clinical and surgical skills.

Most Common Eye Issues

The conditions I see most often are diabetic retinopathy (eye complications as a result of diabetes), cataracts and glaucoma.

Everyday Eye Health Tips

Wearing sunglasses, taking breaks during screen time,

ensuring proper lighting when reading, maintaining a healthy diet (foods rich in antioxidants, such as green leafy vegetables, colourful fruits and vegetables, oily fish and foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E, and zinc are important for eye health) and most importantly, regular eye exams.

Exciting Advances in Eye Care

I am most excited about the advanced technology of intraocular lenses, which are implanted at the time of cataract surgery, such as multifocal lenses.

032 004 0064

Ribumed Medical Centre, Odyssey, 1 Simbithi Dr

Design Journey

The bug really bit when I started decorating our first home in Mount Edgecombe. I battled to find what I loved and what was authentic to me, so I went out and found what I was looking for. I was a lot more into colour and bolder prints back then. I prefer to work with neutrals now as they will never be outdated, and they create a solid foundation that you can build from. I would say I have a classic style now.

Key Business Lesson

Experience and years in the industry play a pivotal role. I am passionate and love what I have created. Nothing happens overnight. I have been running Homestead for over 12 years and have learned many lessons along the way. My goals are big, and I still feel like I have a long way to go.

Balancing Vision & Client Needs

I deal a lot with decorators nationally, so they already have a clear vision of what they are looking for when they come to me, and I guide them on which rug would be suitable for each area. When dealing with the end client, not everyone's style is the same, and that is okay. When clients ask for advice, I give them two or three options that they can work with. You need to make your home, your home. Choose art or decor because you love it - not because it’s on trend. If it resonates with you, it will always have a place in your home, because it reflects who you are.

Design Trends

I love all the natural pieces that are being used, raw wood pieces, textured natural fibre rugs, and woven baskets. It's authentic and feels homely and real.

Advice for Women

If you are passionate and willing to put in the long hours, you’ll fly. Find your own design niche that you become known for, and clients will love you for that.

info@homestead-decor.co.za www.homestead-decor.co.za

Most Fulfilling

I see people during the most vulnerable and difficult times of their lives, and I play a part in helping them get through it! It’s rewarding to see someone grow in confidence after struggling with anxiety, depression, or other mental health challenges. The mental health field is also emerging with so many scientific advances that can be dabbled in, like emerging psychotherapy, ketamine and hormonal replacements.

Breaking Misconceptions

The stigma that mental illness is a sign of weakness, that it is something that you must ‘get over’ or that only some people can get ill, can be a dangerous belief. Mental illness often combines biological, psychological, social, and spiritual domains, warranting

intervention and treatment like any other medical condition.

Advice for Women

The perimenopausal patient is someone I am seeing increasingly in my practice. It is a period that can last up to 10 years and is a very vulnerable time in a woman’s life. The five warning signs are: sleep changes, emotional changes, physical symptoms, intellectual changes or cognitive challenges and behavioural changes.

What Can We Do?

Practise relaxation techniques, self-care, get hormone replacement therapy, and/or seek professional help. Developing coping skills and building supportive relationships will help navigate life's challenges.

Lee Shelly Lee Shelly Interiors

Starting the Business

My path into interiors wasn’t direct - I actually trained as a nursing sister, which deepened my empathy and understanding of people. I’ve always been passionate about art and interiors, so I followed my heart and started my own business, merging creativity with connection. I wouldn’t change a thing.

Signature Style

Exciting Project Moments

Meeting new people and hearing their stories is where the spark begins. I genuinely love collaborating - understanding the vision, the constraints, and helping clients bring a space to life that truly feels like theirs

Creative Flow

Inspiration is everywhere. The changing seasons, colours in nature, even conversations with strangers - all feed into my creative work. I try not to rely solely on trends, which come and go. Real life is my muse.

While I have a personal love for timeless classics and a little sentimentality, I’m very conscious that I’m not creating my own dream space - I’m crafting someone else’s. My signature style is adaptable, respectful of budget and personal taste, and always aims to reflect the person or family who will live in the space.

Empowering the Community through Literature

Sbusiso Mnguni, a 31-year-old book enthusiast, has always felt a deep connection to the written word. Before his father passed away, the family moved around quite a bit. Then, when he was around 10-years-old, they settled at his maternal grandmother's house. “I had a normal childhood, I suppose. I think I was attracted to books because I'm an introvert and I've always felt a disconnect

with the rest of the world,” he reflected. Passionate about books, writing, and photography, StreetLit - Sbusiso's second-hand bookshop at Ballito Lifestyle in The Studios - is a reflection of these interests. Although he keeps every kind of book, he aims to cater more to obscure or avant-garde interests, which are often overlooked in mainstream culture; hence, he tries to focus more on collecting a wide range of classics and collectables.

Founded by the Denis Hurley Centre, StreetLit's mission is to empower homeless individuals by providing them with a means to earn a living through book sales. The programme has left a lasting impact on Sbusiso's life since he joined and continues to do so as he navigates life and the industry of books. “I’ve come to be more tolerant of people’s various interests, whether it be their politics or general preferences, without necessarily aligning with opposing views.”

Being part of the Lifestyle and The Studios community has given Sbusiso the confidence to curate StreetLit as a reflection of his own interests, adding a personal touch and using it as a form of expression rather than purely commercial. “I envision the bookshop as a bridge between mainstream and niche markets, where everyone can find a piece of themselves or be inspired to broaden their literary horizon,” he said.

Sbusiso's love for books developed later in life, because where he’s from, reading for leisure is a foreign concept.

I envision the bookshop as a bridge between mainstream and niche markets, where everyone can find a piece of themselves or be inspired to broaden their literary horizon @streetlit_ballito_lifestyle

However, when he decided to teach himself English, books became an essential resource. He naturally gravitates towards solitary pursuits, and reading, writing, and occasionally attending book clubs have become his favourite activities.

When I asked him to recommend a book to someone just starting to read, he suggested The Other Side of Truth by Beverley Naidoo. “This was the first work of fiction I read, and its captivating narrative drew me in so much that I read it twice,” he said. Set against the backdrop of politics and censorship in Nigeria, it’s a well-written young adult Nigerian tale that speaks to the human condition and ultimately resilience amidst destructive political forces. As a one-man operation, Sbusiso runs StreetLit with the occasional help of his brother. You can find him on Instagram or visit the store. He's also developing new skills in book restoration and miniature book art, with plans to offer these services soon.

Share a bit about how your life path has unfolded: i left home at age 17 to join the military, with my eyes set on a nursing degree through the SanDF. Soon after, i found myself deployed with the South african military Health Services at a military hospital in Pretoria and finally on peacekeeping missions under the un, rising to the rank of Captain. Life shifted, so i transitioned into civilian nursing as an emergency room Professional nurse and then into the pharmaceutical industry. i thrived, working across major portfolios like diabetes, pain, organ transplant, oncology, and women’s health.

i felt a deeper calling to help people directly. that’s when i combined my nursing roots with personal training, nutrition, and life coaching, developing my framework for holistic health and longevity. Somewhere along the way, i discovered i loved lifting heavy things, so i became a bodybuilder and now a powerlifter, earning KZn Provincial and national colours. i’m now prepping for the africa Games in tunisia and the World Champs in Cape town while i keep my fingers crossed for the national team at the Commonwealth Games for Classic Powerlifting for 2026.

and embraced every challenge one at a time. i also had great support from two close friends whom i still treasure dearly.

Building my personal brand has been a journey of staying authentic, even when that meant being the bold, assertive woman in rooms that weren’t quite ready for me. i’ve learned that i was born to lead, and with Jesus at the centre of my life, i’m fearless in my purpose and pursuit.

at the end of the day, my mission is to be the light in my home, in my work, and in every space i enter. and i owe a huge part of that light to my kids.

What was the transition like from military life to motherhood to building your personal brand? i come from a complicated upbringing; my mom worked all the time (she was also a nurse) to support our family and keep us safe, and i had a difficult relationship with my father, so becoming a mom at age 21 while still climbing my own mountains was incredibly tough. But i trusted God’s timing, leaned into all the change,

How has Christ influenced your approach to life, fitness, and motherhood? Before i truly knew Christ, i lived with a lot of fear of the future, and anxiety over the unknown. But once i began to walk closely with God, i realised those feelings were never meant to define me; they were obstacles keeping me from my purpose, my children and family, and from my true relationship with God. through prayer and deepening faith, i began to root myself in my identity as His child, which changed everything. now i understand that God desires peace, Don’t let

love, and joy for us, even as we live with a holy reverence for Him.

How do you stay motivated? movement is my medicine, and it brings me back to myself. it’s not just about aesthetics or performance; it’s about emotional balance and spiritual alignment. if i don’t wake up and speak to God or spend time just being still and listening to Christ, i feel very off-centre. my kids look to me for guidance and i want to show up for them from an honest, grounded place. So, i’ve learned to create an environment for myself that reflects everything i believe in: faith, discipline, balance, and joy. motivation isn’t about always feeling like doing it; it’s about knowing why you must.

What would you say to women who are struggling to make time for themselves? We all get 24 hours and how we choose to use that time is up to us. if you’re doom-scrolling on social media, that could be your prayer time, your walk outside, your food prep, or your workout. that could be the moment you read a label in the shopping aisle and make a nourishing choice, or just sit in silence and breathe. information is literally at your fingertips. Don’t sit on it. Wake up one hour earlier if that’s what it takes. also, i’ll say this with love - your happiness and healing is on the other side of fear. if you’re passionate about something, trust God, take the leap and let God lead the way. Your life is worth the effort.

as a writer, how do you use words to connect with others? i write poetry and prayers. those are the languages of my soul. it started with my personal stories of mental, emotional and spiritual struggles, then into some romance novels. i ghostwrite and quite enjoy telling stories through someone else who wants to and can publish. i do have two unpublished romance novels, a self-help book, and a prayer book waiting patiently for God’s nudge to be released into the world. it’s not about fear; it is about divine timing. Writing is ministry. i’m in communion with the word of God and with words themselves, whether it’s to uplift someone, guide them or simply hold a mirror to their own strength. that’s the space i write from.

if you could go back and give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be? never ever doubt yourself or your instincts. and above all, listen for the voice of God. When you’re in tune with those two things, you won’t be led astray. Life becomes more peaceful when you know whom to trust and when you finally realise that your path has always been divinely designed. Be kind to yourself and enjoy your life!

Cycles & Symptoms

Dr Kumari Naidoo, a local specialist physician, endocrinologist and diabetologist sheds light on many misconceptions and possible solutions around PCOS.

With health information becoming so easily accessible on social media, and previously marginalised conditions being talked about, how do we separate fact from misinformation? Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is common, affecting around 10% of reproductive-aged women, yet it is also one of the most misunderstood conditions. With fit-fluencers and online “experts” offering conflicting advice and explanations, we need clear, reliable information.

PCOS is a reproductive, metabolic, and psychological condition which impacts women across their lifespan. a diagnosis for PCOS is made when a woman has two out of the following three criteria:

• irregular periods.

• Signs of excess androgens (acne or excess hair growth) or elevated androgen levels in the blood.

• the appearance of multiple cysts in the ovaries on ultrasound.

multiple factors are responsible for PCOS, including genetic and hereditary factors, exposures during pregnancy, environmental and lifestyle factors, insulin resistance and inflammation.

PCOS affects many systems in the body, including:

• reproductive changes (irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, endometrial cancer and pregnancy complications).

• metabolic features (insulin resistance, weight gain, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes).

• Skin manifestations (acne, excessive hair growth).

• increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

• Psychological complications (anxiety, depression, sleep and eating disorders).

there are many lingering misconceptions. Here are three common myths:

• all women with PCOS have ovarian cysts: Based on its name, many people think PCOS refers to cysts, but this is false. For many women, tiny follicles are present in the ovary and may resemble a “strand of pearls” on

an ultrasound. the follicles may resemble small cysts, but they are distinctly different. these follicles are not cancerous and do not cause pain.

• Women diagnosed with PCOS can’t have children: PCOS is a common cause of fertility problems for women, but that doesn’t mean carrying a pregnancy to term is impossible. many women with PCOS can conceive on their own or with the help of fertility treatments. Lifestyle changes and a healthier diet can also improve the chances of conceiving.

• Women with PCOS can’t lose weight: it may be harder for women with PCOS, but it’s not impossible. many women with PCOS have a lowered sensitivity to insulin, a hormone that regulates sugar in the blood. this is known as insulin resistance, which is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes and may make it difficult to lose weight, even if you are following a healthy lifestyle. Working with a registered dietician and endocrinologist can also help with weight loss goals.

But how does this condition affect fertility? Due to irregular periods and lack of ovulation (anovulation), women may experience difficulty conceiving. Obesity is an important factor that can negatively impact the chances of falling pregnant, and is associated with a higher risk of miscarriage and poorer pregnancy outcomes. Preconception weight loss

with lifestyle modification and possibly medication and surgical interventions is therefore important.

in women who are not ovulating spontaneously, medications such as metformin, clomiphene citrate and letrozole can be used to induce ovulation. Second-line agents for ovulation induction include gonadotrophins. in some cases, assisted reproductive techniques like iVF may be needed. Lifestyle intervention is an integral part of managing PCOS. Healthy eating, exercise and behavioural strategies help to improve general health and cardiovascular fitness, psychological well-being and the metabolic profile and produce weight loss, although this is usually modest. these interventions are recommended for all women with PCOS as they are beneficial, even in the absence of weight loss.

Various medical therapies may be advised based on the symptoms, including metformin for women who have metabolic abnormalities (insulin resistance and prediabetes), for cycle regulation and ovulation induction; medical therapy for weight loss (liraglutide, semaglutide), the OCP to assist with managing menstrual irregularity and excessive hair growth,

and anti-androgens for more severe androgen excess. a shared decisionmaking process with the patient is essential to determine which treatment options are acceptable.

alternative therapies have been explored, and inositol could be considered for women with PCOS based on individual preferences and values. it has potential for metabolic improvement and does not cause harm, but the effects on ovulation, hirsutism or weight are minimal.

Vitamin D and folate supplementation are also possible alternative treatments.

PCOS can feel overwhelming, but the good news is that with the right support, guidance, and care, women can take control of their health. it starts with access to accurate information and the understanding that managing PCOS is not one-size-fits-all.

Meet your favourite neighbourhood designer! From weddings to matric dances, Rose creates oneof-a-kind pieces that will make you feel like a queen!

DreSSeS, DanCeS & DreamS COme true

rose ngalo, the girl from Zastron, a small town in the Free State, moved to Ballito 17 years ago. She started working as a domestic worker and later became a small business owner. rose has loved sewing since she was a young girl. although she never attended sewing school, she learned from her mother by watching her sew as a seven-year-old. She specialises in a variety of garments, including wedding and matric dance dresses, as well as alterations and replicating garments for clients.

One of the most challenging aspects of her job is creating a garment from a picture by making her own pattern. this demands a lot of her time, and she generally works on these projects during quieter periods, as she needs to

focus before cutting the fabric. Since she doesn't purchase the fabric personally, it can be a challenge to explain what fabric her client needs to buy, hoping it will be the correct one. However, the finished product always melts her heart.

rose's inspiration comes from her clients, who bring diverse requests that inspire her to create original and unique pieces. When she sees the final product and the look of satisfaction on their face, it makes her extremely happy. "i love what i do," she says. "it's not all about money; i'm always happy to give my clients my time, and i enjoy talking to them too." Building a relationship with her clients is special to her, as it allows her to add a personal touch to their garments.

Building a relationship with my clients is special to me, as it allows me to add a personal touch to their garments

although some clients can be more challenging than others, rose ensures that her approach to work remains consistent. She schedules appointments only on tuesdays and thursdays for fittings and alterations, while mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays are dedicated to creating her pieces. Her relationship with her clients is vital to her business, and as a perfectionist, she won't let a client take a finished garment home unless she's entirely satisfied with the fit.

the Ballito community has been incredibly supportive, and rose appreciates each and every one of her supporters. Despite facing challenges in her journey, she's learned to remain calm and respect her clients' needs. Her clients keep her on trend with the fashion industry, and she loves the challenge of trying new techniques when creating unique pieces.

One of the highlights of her career was participating in the umhlali Primary School fashion show last year, where she created over 35 dresses for the Grade 7 farewell. this year is particularly special, as she'll be making her daughter Boniwe's matric dance dress. rose is also planning to launch a mobile service to cater to clients who may be unable to visit her studio, such as senior citizens. there's even a possibility of a fashion show in the pipeline!

rose feels blessed to have wonderful people in her life who support and encourage her in her business. She also has a fantastic team that assists her behind the scenes, making her work worthwhile.

Gabby Strydom

What’s one thing you wish you had known about your worth when you were younger?

i wish i had known that true self-worth comes from within, not from external validation. For so long, i looked for approval in other people’s opinions, only to feel more disconnected from who i truly was. the more i sought validation outside myself, the further i drifted from my own values, views and confidence. it took time to realise that lasting contentment and self-acceptance could only be found by turning inward, embracing who i am at my core, and honouring my own journey with how i see myself, above all else.

What’s one moment you realised your own strength?

i realised my own strength in the quiet evolution of growing into myself, figuring out my likes and dislikes without being influenced or swayed by the opinions of others, especially when i leapt into freelancing. i’ve had to learn to trust my creativity and my instincts. Choosing to build something on my own showed me that strength isn’t loud or perfect. it’s sometimes betting on yourself, and showing up consistently even when things feel uncertain.

Write a letter/note to your 20-year-old self

Dear younger me,

You’ll think purpose is something you need to chase - a career, a title, a plan. it’s not. Purpose will find you when you stop running from the parts of yourself that feel “too much” or “not enough”. One day, you’ll be standing over a broken animal, hands shaking, heart shattered, and in that moment, you’ll remember who you are. Stay wild. Stay soft. Love hard. and trust that everything you go through is preparing you to show up … not perfect, but powerfully present, for the voiceless.

What lesson did life teach you the hard way?

Life taught me that not everyone you help will be grateful. Some will criticise, some will misunderstand, and sometimes, you’ll question yourself. i learned the hard way that service without ego means letting go of applause. that true impact isn’t always visible, and the work that breaks your heart may also heal it.

What is one piece of advice you now live by that your younger self would’ve rolled her eyes at?

How you do anything is how you do everything. Young me would’ve scoffed, rolled her eyes, and mumbled something about overthinking a snack break. But now? i see how showing up with intention in the small things overflows into the big stuff - from brushing my teeth to building a business. turns out, consistency and values aren’t boring. they’re powerful.

What’s one moment you realised your own strength?

Losing my first pregnancy was a silent kind of heartbreak - one that left me questioning my body, my faith, and my voice. But in the quiet aftermath, i found an unexpected strength. i leaned into learning about the female body, hormones, and healing. i began to speak from that space - raw, real, and informed. that loss didn’t break me; it birthed a deeper empathy and shaped the woman and speaker i am today.

If you could pass on just one life lesson to your younger self, what would it be?

i would tell my younger self that nothing truly comes. Significant achievements require diligence, effort, and perseverance. the truth is, though, that when you commit yourself fully, success inevitably follows. So, keep pushing forward, trust your instincts completely, and be bold. take those calculated risks, trusting all the way that those less conventional ideas and paths often lead to the best rewards. trust yourself, meticulously plan your steps, including “the back up plan”, and then confidently pursue your goals. most importantly, never allow anyone to dictate how you should live your life. the most authentic and fulfilling version of yourself is the one that you intrinsically know is right for you.

What part of your life journey are you most proud of - even if nobody else saw it?

i am most proud of the family i have nurtured and built, acknowledging the journey from my origins to the family that continues to grow. the not-soeasy choices i made along the way to be all-in, embracing a less conventional version of a modern woman, have ultimately brought me the most joy and satisfaction in my life.

WORDS dR ROHini BiSaal

my trip to Bali, indonesia, was actually a surprise trip planned by my incredible family to celebrate my 30th birthday, and it turned out to be one of the most unforgettable and wholesome experiences of my life. i’ve always had Bali on my bucket list and saw it as a very spiritual place to visit. my family truly pulled all the stops

to make it memorable for me. We were in Bali for two weeks and stayed at three different places: ubud, uluwatu, and Seminyak.

We checked the weather forecast and packed accordingly for our October trip, bringing mostly light clothing. Bali is also known for mosquito bites, so i made sure i packed light, long trousers and throw-overs

Surrender yourself to the overall experience and travel light

during the visits to the rice fields and other outdoor activities. it does get pretty humid in Bali, very similar to that of Durban’s climate so ensure you pack your sunblock and stay hydrated. the visa process was straightforward: fill out the form online, submit it, and show the proof upon arrival at the airport. if you are booking via an agent, they will also guide you through the process.

there were many sites and places on my list but, of course, it was impossible to do them all which could mean a potential trip back! We got to try the famous Bali swing and chose our outfits for the experience. We visited a few temples, tried out the local cuisine, dined at one of Bali’s highly suggested restaurants called “akar” for my birthday, watched the Kecak dance which

is storytelling through dance, walked through the rice fields, experienced a yoga class, learned how to make their authentic Bali offering, headed to the Kanto Lampo waterfall and most importantly, relaxed and took in the beauty and sacred energy of Bali. i found myself enjoying the random expeditions and visiting sites along the way as we manoeuvred through different places.

We aimed to always rise early in the morning so we could make the most out of the day. We did, however, spend a day at our resorts as they were absolutely beautiful and had activities within the premises. my favourite was the K-Club in ubud. the Villa was breathtaking, and we truly felt as if we were in paradise. this was the first location where we arrived and where i celebrated my 30th, so it will always be special to me. We experienced such a wonderful evening at akar where they

had aerialists and fire dancing. there were fireworks on the beach while we ate dinner in Seminyak, which was another cherishable moment. it was absolutely magical, and having witnessed it with the most special people in my life made it even more significant.

the Bali swing was also a great experience, and i have to say, the gentleman who coordinated the different activity points really ensured we got the best images and videos. the Bali sunsets are mesmerising and worth waiting for. i also enjoyed a lot of the simple things in Bali such as experiencing the hospitality, kindness and genuine energy of the people in Bali. they are definitely one of the most kind and caring communities i’ve met throughout my travels. i enjoyed the food even though i may have added a tad bit too much spice to some of my meals. the weather was good, even though we did experience a bit of drizzle, we were

still able to explore and have a great time. the number one tip - surrender yourself to the overall experience and travel light. and when i say travel light, i mean it in a metaphorical way too. Bali is a very healing and spiritual place (at least for me it was) and i truly felt the sacred energy being emitted. Have a list of things you wish to experience and see but also be open to going with the flow and exploring hidden gems along the way.

Be sure to aLWaYS drink bottled water and not tap water. “Bali Belly”’ is a real phenomenon and the potential of you falling ill with the local water is quite high. Pack a small medical kit as a precaution. i have made a couple of suggestions via my instagram account, so feel free to check it out for more travel tips and tricks.

Colour Nature’s Living

My journey with orchids began a few years ago when I gifted my wife orchids on special occasions. Over time, friends and family added to our collection. Some of those gifted plants are still going strong seven years later, blooming year after year - beautiful, living reminders of those moments. Most people are familiar with the Phalaenopsis, the brightly coloured orchids often seen in grocery stores, doctor’s rooms, restaurants, and weddings. These elegant plants are the most widely recognised type and are usually where people begin their orchid journey, as I did. They’re easy to

love: beautiful, stylish, long-flowering, and often lightly fragrant. With a little care and the right environment, their blooms can last for months.

But the world of orchids stretches far beyond the common “Woolies Phal.”

Orchids are one of the largest and most diverse plant families on the planet, with thousands of species and hybrids to discover, each with its own charm and growing needs. Some orchids smell like chocolate, such as Oncidium “Sharry Baby”. Others, like Dracula simia, resemble tiny monkey faces. The Cattleya gigas produces giant, fragrant flowers, while Paphiopedilums have such intricate

shapes that they look unreal. Orchids can be small enough to sit in the palm of your hand or large enough to steal the spotlight in any room.

In nature, most orchids grow as epiphytes, clinging to trees with bare roots in humid forests - no soil needed. Our familiar Phalaenopsis is one of these. Others are terrestrial, growing in the ground. Some enjoy bright light, others prefer shade. Some like it moist, others thrive when left to dry out between waterings. With the right match, many orchids can thrive indoors, on a sunny windowsill, shaded patio, or even mounted on a tree in your garden. At first, the variety

can seem overwhelming, but that’s part of the magic - there’s always something new to learn. For beginners, one of the best ways to get started is by joining a local orchid society.

The Natal Orchid Society (NOS) meets every third weekend of the month in Durban North. Meetings are open to the public for a small entry fee, or you can join as a member and enjoy added benefits. These gatherings offer demonstrations on orchid care, talks by experienced growers, and even outings to see wild orchids in their natural habitat. Vendors often attend, selling interesting and rare plants, along with expert advice.

One highlight of every meeting is the plant table - a showcase of blooming orchids brought in by members. It’s a feast for the eyes and a great way to see what’s possible in your own growing space.

Orchid growing is more than a hobby - it’s a rewarding, social, and endlessly fascinating experience. Whether you care for one plant or many, orchids can bring joy, colour, and life into any home.

Salt & Stone

SENSORY MASSAGE RETREAT

This is no ordinary massage; this is where your mind quietens, your muscles melt, and your body relaxes. Salt & Stone massage bar is a newbie and has skyrocketed to being the talk of the town. They are the first hydrohead spa in Ballito! Just making them even more amazing to experience.

Tucked inside the lovely Sage Centre, the spa welcomes you into a grounding space with a stone-textured shelf wall and live-edge wood features. Co-owner, Cassidy, greeted us with a warm hug before seating us on the couch and handing us their welcome card. This isn’t like any other form you would fill in at other spas. It is referred to as your passport to personalisation, as a fully customised sensory journey that you get to create.

You start by picking your scent - a base and aroma oil, all laid out on a little scent tray to help you choose your favourite.

Then comes sight: you pick the room’s light colour - I went with yellow for a warm, calming glow. Sound follows, with options like ocean waves or rain; I chose ambience, a soothing stream of meditative music. Touch is a fun one - herbal tea hair rinses, each with a purpose. Lucille picked one for colourtreated hair. And finally, taste - a menu of teas including wild cherry and hibiscus (a sweet, tangy blend I loved), enjoyed after the massage; a full five-senses journey, tailored completely by you.

The lovely masseuses led us to our rooms, where we got comfortable and rang a little bell when we were ready to start. Lying back, my eyes were covered with a cool beaded eye mask before starting. As you hear the water turn on, you feel a slow wave of warmth gently glide over your hair to your scalp - I instantly felt my whole body let go and melt into the bed. The masseuse used a few head massage instruments, which are great for blood flow and releasing tension.

The one-hour massage isn’t just a heavenly head massage - it includes a little foot TLC too. The hydro bed has a clever secret: the foot cushion lifts to reveal a basin below for a scrub and massage. Genius! While my legs were pampered, a dome steamed my hair (and gave my face a bonus glow). Then came a soothing neck, shoulder and arm massage - Blessing, my therapist, worked magic on my tense muscles.

It all ended with the soft ring of a sound bowl and rejoining in the reception for a cup of their delicious tea - the perfect finish to such a peaceful experience. It’s not often you find a massage that engages all your senses and leaves you floating out the door - but this one truly did; a reset for the body, mind, and soul.

EEnerChi Wellness Ballito

Aligning Science with Healing Energy

verything is energy - from the food we eat to the sleep we use to recharge. Our bodies are powerful, intelligent systems capable of self-healing, especially when nurtured in the right environment. enerChi Wellness in Ballito offers exactly that: a space where science meets energy healing. it’s a sanctuary for those seeking to reset and reconnect with their natural vitality as well as offer themselves deep restorative healing.

at the heart of enerChi Wellness is the energy enhancement System (eeSystem) - a breakthrough technology backed by over 20 years of scientific research. it works with energy, frequency, and vibration to support cellular regeneration, reduce stress, and activate the body’s innate healing intelligence. Whether you’re already familiar with energy work or just beginning your journey, this experience feels both profoundly familiar yet remarkably revolutionary.

Located in the ultra-modern Workshop17 workspace at Ballito Junction mall (Office 7.03), enerChi Wellness is designed to soothe from

the moment you arrive. Founder nalini, warm and radiant, welcomed us with energised, structured water, charged overnight by the eeSystem. as we sipped, she shared a surprising insight - the body has 114 energy centres, also known as chakras, not just the wellknown seven, where 72,000 energy pathways converge. With that, we set our intentions and stepped into the healing space.

the Scalar room, which houses the eeSystem, is dimly lit, tranquil, and lined with ultra-comfortable La-ZBoy recliners. in each corner, tall glowing towers emit frequencies that intersect to generate a scalar, biophotonic (light-based) field - a fifthdimensional energy environment that interacts with the body on a cellular level. this field stimulates mitochondria to increase atP (the body’s energy currency) and activate the cell’s crystalline structures, raising cellular voltage to support detoxification, repair, and optimal function. as we reclined, soft meditative music with sound frequencies played in the background. i felt a tingling across my forehead and a gentle heaviness in my limbs. it was deeply calming —

almost like my body remembered how to rest at a cellular level. after the session, we were given thoughtful aftercare guidance: a detox bath or foot soak to support toxin release, and a reminder that some people may feel temporary fatigue as their bodies recalibrate. that night, i took the salt bath as instructed - and slept more soundly than i had in months.in the following days, we both noticed improved energy, clearer minds, and better sleep. rather than claiming to ‘cure,’ the eeSystem creates the optimal environment for the body’s innate wisdom to activate its healing intelligence - naturally.

if you’re feeling drained, overwhelmed, need healing, or simply curious about energy medicine, enerChi Wellness and the eeSystem is a powerful place to begin. it’s not just a session - it’s an experience. You’ll walk out lighter, more centred, and attuned to a deeper sense of well-being.

ready to reset? enerChi Wellness might just be the cellular upgrade your life has been waiting for.

Spring Starts Within

ilove spring; it feels like such a welcome shift from the cold of winter. if spring were a metaphor, it could represent the unseen preparation that happens during winter. Winter is a time of endings - a season where old things die off, dormant bulbs rest underground, and seeds are scattered by august's winds, ready to be activated by September's rains. as grass transforms from brown to green, new shoots emerge, buds appear, and nature embraces renewal. How can we use this transition as a metaphor for our own springwhether emotionally, relationally, or professionally?

Winter Before Spring

Winter is often a season of endings marked by loss, whether of loved ones, relationships, or personal goals. these endings may bring emotional challenges and feelings of being derailed. Yet, winter also presents an opportunity for growth, laying the groundwork for the renewal and blossoming of spring.

How Does Spring Start Within?

the first step to entering your own "spring" is acknowledging that something has ended. Seasons of change often require a grieving process, one that doesn't happen automatically but through intentional effort. Consider these steps to help nurture your personal spring:

• take note of how you perceive yourself and your situation.

• evaluate and reframe your mindset: Weigh each thought and ask whether it empowers you or serves your growth. recognise opportunities to embrace self-acceptance and resilience. Can these challenges be used as stepping stones to something better?

• Let go of control: accept that while you cannot control others or external events, you can choose how you respond. this shift in mindset can liberate you and create space for growth.

essentially, "spring" begins within our minds when we intentionally focus on empowering thoughts and releasing the old. imagine your thoughts as seedseach one you focus on is watered and activated to grow. as you weigh each thought, ask yourself: Would i want to sit under the shade of this tree or enjoy its fruit? How does it serve me? this practice helps discern thoughts that empower versus disempower.

as these internal shifts take root, you may find unexpected peace and resilience. Over time, others will notice the outward transformation - a reflection of the spring that has blossomed within. You will find yourself in your season of renewal, ready to flourish in the life ahead.

• acknowledge your emotions: acknowledge what you are feeling, then embrace a healthy release through creativity, exercise, or conversations with trusted individuals. LYnn is a Registered Counsellor, a wife, a mother, a nature-lover, a foodie, and loves to learn. info@lynnclarkson.co.za

A Wave of Growth

The Ballito Pro presented by O’Neill, held from 22 June to 6 July at Willard’s Beach on KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast, once again cemented its reputation as Africa’s longestrunning surf competition and one of the region’s most vibrant events. Over 15 days, the shores of Ballito were alive with world-class surfing, family entertainment, and a festival atmosphere that has delivered far more than just thrilling sporting action.

At its heart, the Ballito Pro is more than a surf event. It’s a celebration of coastal culture and a proven driver of local growth. Around 180, 000 people attended this year’s event, with an incredible global reach estimated at 100 million people through broadcasts and digital coverage. That kind of exposure translates into a publicity return on investment of about R40 million for the region, an impressive boost for the KwaDukuza Municipality and the broader North Coast.

For the local economy, the impact is tangible. The event directly creates up to 450 temporary jobs during its two-week run, while also opening doors for small businesses. This year, approximately 60 local vendors showcased their products and services, from food stalls and craft markets to lifestyle brands. Many of these small and medium enterprises reported excellent sales, and the visibility they gained should spark ongoing partnerships and investments well after the event.

Tourism authorities point to the Ballito Pro as a key catalyst for investment and SMME development in the region. Hotels, guest houses, and restaurants operate at near-capacity throughout the competition, and visitors often extend their stay to explore the North Coast’s beaches, reserves, and nearby attractions. For many first-time visitors, the event becomes a gateway to discovering what makes this corner of KZN so special.

Beyond the economic numbers, the Ballito Pro has built its identity on values of sustainability and inclusivity. Organisers integrate strong environmental awareness campaigns, from beach clean-ups to education sessions about ocean conservation. This year, 600 schoolchildren from various KwaDukuza communities participated in beach activities and Youth Month programmes linked to the event, fostering a new generation of ocean-conscious citizens.

Although surfing is the headline act, the Ballito Pro offers something for everyone. Spectators enjoyed skating showcases, yoga and Pilates sessions, beach volleyball tournaments, and live music concerts. This multi-faceted approach means that even non-surfers find themselves drawn into the festivities, further amplifying the event’s reach and appeal.

Spectators also enjoyed both a women’s challenger event and a parasurfing event, underlining the competition’s commitment to growth and inclusivity. The crowning moment came when young South African surfer Luke Thompson claimed victory, giving local fans even more reason to celebrate.

As the only WSL Challenger Series event on the African continent, the Ballito Pro not only elevates KwaDukuza on the world stage but also inspires pride in what the region can achieve. With its winning blend of worldclass sport, community involvement, and economic impact, the Ballito Pro continues to prove that when the waves roll in, so do opportunity and growth for the entire North Coast.
