eNOTE eDITor'S
ach year, this edition carries a little more focus and turns the spotlight, just a little more, towards the men of the North Coast. This isn’t about dividing lines or drawing circles too tightly. It’s about recognising the roles many men play quietly in our communities; the fathers, brothers, husbands, coaches, mentors, business owners and builders. Those who lead with purpose, those still finding their way, and those somewhere in between.
To the men who already carry their share with strength and heart, this letter is a nod of respect. You are seen, and your contribution is truly valued and matters.
And to those who perhaps haven’t quite yet recognised their place or value, I hope something in this edition helps you see it or at least understand the rest of us do; not in a loud or performative way, but with a deeper realisation that you’re part of an amazing community here on the North Coast. Your presence in your home, your business, your friendships, your community - it counts more than you might think.
I love that we’ve covered stories in this edition that will introduce you to men who lead quietly, serve boldly, and dream loudly. You’ll read about local entrepreneurs shaping industries, fathers reflecting on legacy, athletes who’ve found purpose in movement, and stories of perseverance and impact. Together, they paint a textured picture of
masculinity - one that’s grounded, evolving and, most of all, human.
Over the years, you’ll have come to know I’m a fan of the dynamics and the game of rugby. I love that it reflects the essence of something we all believe in: that life is richer when it’s ‘played’ as part of a team. Some days we’re charging forward, other days we’re passing wide, looking for a gap - and sometimes we’re sprinting back in defence when there’s a break in our line.
I’ve also come to realise that the best games aren’t won by individual brilliance, but by a team that understands the value of unity. It’s when everyone - on and off the field - plays their part, trusts one another, and leans into their unique strengths that something greater unfolds. That’s when we’re reminded we were never meant to do this alone.
So here’s to the men of the North Coast - may you see your worth, play to your strengths, embrace those around you and always remember that the team is right here with you.

other companies like SMCI (Super Micro Computer Inc) and ARM Holdings on the periphery and mainstream AI that are all set to profit from this trend.

Hearts Over Charts
WoRdS Pierre Taljaard
The mechanics of investing often follow a structured routine - choosing investment funds, considering tax consequences, making regular contributions, and monitoring performance. It's a methodical process built on numbers and charts. These investment metrics, while informative, rarely evoke the emotional connection we feel to other aspects of our lives. However, the outcome of investing is where the true magic happens. Wise investing over decades creates wealth that allows you to maintain your lifestyle and create meaningful experiences: that family trip to Barcelona you've been dreaming about, adventures with grandchildren in a new car, the pottery course you've always wanted to try, or supporting a local charity that needs your help.
In other words, the outcomes of investing touch areas dear to our hearts: family, friends, experiences, and causes we care about. While the numbers matter, it's worth remembering what we're truly working towards. There's little point in creating wealth without putting it to meaningful use.
A Balanced Approach
Understanding this connection can transform how we approach financial decisions. Instead of viewing every goal as a mathematical problem, we can incorporate elements that resonate in the heart, not just on the balance sheet.
This approach brings several benefits. First, it forces us to slow down and take stock, which helps us make more thoughtful decisions. Second, it encourages us to ask better questions, widening our horizons and revealing options we might miss when focused solely on the numbers.
Think of it this way: almost nothing in life is black and white. Most financial situations have multiple reasonable responses, and understanding the trade-offs becomes crucial to making decisions you won't regret.
Your Financial Decisions
This balanced perspective becomes invaluable when facing life's big financial crossroads. Consider these common questions:
• What investments should I choose?
• When can I stop working?
• Should I start my own business?
• Can I help my daughter with a house deposit?
• How do I balance travel dreams with saving goals?
Each of these questions has technical components, but the emotional dimensions often determine whether the decision will truly satisfy you in the long run.
A Challenge Worth Taking
Money is inherently emotional - whether we're earning it, saving it, or spending it.
When facing a financial decision, challenge yourself to look beyond the spreadsheets. Discover elements that won't show up on any chart but matter deeply to your heart.
This balanced approach often leads to fewer long-term regrets and a more fulfilling life. Money isn't merely a mathematical equation, and not everything needs to be optimised. It's hearts over charts, in my view. While money matters, the real-life outcomes it enables are what should truly inspire us.

Meet six men in business as they share their stories of hustle, heart and homegrown innovation
reece & Trent Strydom
New owners of Summa Smoothies
For these brothers, the road to building Summa Smoothies was fuelled by more than just entrepreneurial ambition, it was driven by a shared passion for health, wellness, and making nutritious choices easier for everyone. Trent, a competitive CrossFit athlete, was naturally drawn to the nutritional benefits of smoothies, while Reece, always on the go with a demanding schedule, found value in the convenience of a healthy graband-go option. Together, they
recognised a gap in the market for smoothie solutions that catered to both active lifestyles and time-crunched consumers.
But navigating the food industry at a young age wasn’t without its learning curves. Working with fresh produce kept the duo on their toes - seasonal fruit shortages, pricing fluctuations, and supply unpredictability
Our values will always remain the same: locally sourced, healthconscious, and rooted in community
meant they had to quickly adapt, learn to budget smarter, and remain flexible in their production processes.
“Dealing with fresh produce definitely keeps the mind sharp,” they admit, crediting this dynamic environment for sharpening their business acumen. What truly sets Summa Smoothies apart is its commitment to local sourcing and sustainability. By partnering with farmers and suppliers in the Durban area, Reece and Trent have not only supported their community but also minimised their carbon footprint. “It’s important to us that Summa Smoothies is more than just a product - it’s a brand that gives back and stands for something meaningful,” they say. Their smoothies are more than a healthy meal replacement - they’re also a smart business solution. For restaurants, Summa Smoothies reduce labour costs, eliminates ingredient prep and waste, requires no staff training, and offers consistent results every time.
“We strictly pack the recipe,” they explain, “so it’s always the same great product, every single time.”
Looking ahead, the brothers have bold ambitions. Currently operating in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town, they plan to scale their brand nationally over the next five years. Yet even with expansion on the horizon, their values will remain the same: locally sourced, health-conscious, and rooted in community.
With Reece and Trent at the helm, Summa Smoothies is not just blending fruit - it’s blending purpose, passion, and potential into every pack.

omninela Medical
At just 30 years old, Durban-born entrepreneur Ricardo Lognath has already earned his place amongst Africa's brightest, landing on Forbes Africa's 30 Under 30 list and winning Young Entrepreneur of the Year at the South African Youth Awards in 2024. With his brother, Nicolas (28), they co-founded Omninela Medical in 2017, driven by a sobering statistic: only 17% of South Africans have medical insurance. "We knew we had to be part of the solution." With over 10,000 affordable health, beauty, and pet care products, Omninela's e-commerce platform has become a game-changer in bridging the healthcare gap. "Sourcing effective products at reasonable prices whilst ensuring access for a wide range of income groups requires constant innovation," says the founder.
By leveraging technology, optimising supply chains, and building strategic partnerships, Omninela maintains quality without driving up costs. This mix of compassion and innovation sets the company apart. The pandemic accelerated the global shift to digital healthcare, and Omninela was ready. Investing in AI, e-commerce, and future-focused services like virtual consultations and prescription fulfilment, they embraced a patient-centric digital model. "Post-COVID, we saw an opportunity to make healthcare safer and more convenient." From meeting increased demand to managing logistics and supplier relationships, Omninela has responded with robust automation, data analytics, and a growing team of passionate individuals. A collaborative work culture and shared ownership of the company's mission have helped keep the team motivated and aligned. Social and environmental responsibility remains central. The company
Omninela is not just shaping the future of healthcare in South Africa; it's redefining how it's accessed
partners with local providers to improve healthcare access in marginalised communities and actively promotes awareness through education. Sustainability is another priority, with biodegradable packaging, ecoconscious suppliers, and carbonefficient delivery practises woven into their operations.
Looking ahead, international expansion is on the cards, with interest in emerging markets where access to healthcare remains limited. For now, the focus is on strengthening their foundation in South Africa, ensuring that healthcare products remain affordable, transparent,
and tailored to the needs of the local population. In a world where digital transformation is redefining industries, they're proving that heart-led innovation can change lives - one delivery, one partnership, and one patient at a time. Omninela is not just shaping the future of healthcare in South Africa; it's redefining how it's accessed.

Chad Brown
Durban Solar Power and Electrical
For Chad Brown, the spark that ignited his future wasn’t just metaphorical - it was literal. A single high school lesson on how light bulbs behave in series and parallel planted the seed of fascination. “That’s where my love for electricity started,” Chad reflects.
After Grade 10, Chad made a bold move. He left traditional school and enrolled in a technical college, where he earned his matric equivalent and completed qualifications in electrical construction. “It wasn’t the conventional route,” he admits, “but it was the right one for me.” Inspired by his father’s entrepreneurial spirit and mentored by close friend Donovan Griffiths of Develop Direct, he forged his path into the electrical industry with courage, skill, and vision. Today, at age 24, he runs Durban Solar Power and Electrical, a growing
company born from his original venture, Yelo Electrical. Starting wasn’t easy. Youth can be a hurdle in an industry where trust is built over time. “Clients underestimated our skill because of my age,” he recalls. But thanks to the locals in Ballito who took a chance on him, his business began to flourish - founded on transparent pricing, neat installations, and exceptional after-sales service. Word-ofmouth quickly became their strongest marketing tool.
As the business grew, so did its capabilities. From completing shopfitting projects for major brands like Crocs, Vans, and Under Armour to tackling a complex government project across seven rural sites in KwaZulu-Natal, this entrepreneur’s story is one of perseverance and calculated risk. “It pushed us to our limits - but proved what our team could really achieve together.” Adapting to industry trends, he became accredited in renewable energy and launched Durban Solar Power in 2022. Now merging his electrical and solar
brands, he aims to expand into smart homes, security, and largescale commercial solar solutions.
Learn, adapt, and don’t be afraid of starting small
For him, success isn’t just about profits - it’s about people. “We’ve never charged for a call-out to quote. We build trust before we build anything else,” he says. His leadership focus lies in growing a balanced, purpose-driven team where each member has the chance to thrive. His advice to aspiring entrepreneurs? “Get your first client - that’s where the momentum starts. Learn, adapt, and don’t be afraid of starting small.”

Mfundo Ngidi Founder of MNG Design & Construction Start where you are. Use what you have. Believe in the vision
Growing up in the Maphumulo Local Municipality, where opportunities were scarce and the future often seemed dim, Mfundo Ngidi chose a different path - one paved with purpose, passion, and possibility. Surrounded by building sites and construction activity from a young age, Mfundo’s curiosity quickly blossomed into a deep fascination with design and engineering. “Watching structures rise from the ground up sparked something in me,” he recalls. “It wasn’t just about
buildings - it was about creating change.” With a raw talent for technical drawing and a drive to uplift his community, Mfundo founded MNG Design & Construction - a company rooted in innovation and impact. Armed with digital tools like AutoCAD and 3D modelling software, Mfundo uses technology to streamline design, improve efficiency, and offer clients transparent, cost-effective solutions.
Starting a business in a capitalheavy industry like construction, without funding or experience, meant learning to do more with less. “We stayed lean, focused on quality, and let our work speak for itself,” he shares. A breakthrough project with a major KZN shopping mall tested his resilience - but it also solidified his place in the industry. More than just a business, MNG is a vehicle for change. The company prioritises local hiring, upskills youth, and offers mentorship in rural communities. “I want people from places like mine to see that it’s possible. Success isn’t reserved for those in cities or with connections - it’s for those who dare to dream and work for it.”
Looking ahead, Mfundo envisions expanding into a full-scale engineering firm with a dedicated manufacturing arm to produce building materials, create jobs and reduce construction costs. “We’re not just building structures; we’re building a legacy.”
To young South Africans with big dreams and small means, Mfundo’s message is simple but powerful: “Start where you are. Use what you have. Believe in the vision - and let your work do the talking.”
“We don’t just build - we innovate. Technology allows us to visualise, adapt, and deliver better, faster.” But Mfundo’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. nkanyezimfundo94@gmail.com
FIDELITY ADT OFFERS AN INTEGRATED TECHNOLOGY DRIVEN APPROACH
Fidelity Services Group is Southern Africa’s largest integrated security and risk solutions provider, as well as South Africa’s largest black-owned security company. With a nationwide footprint, it maintains its leading position through excellence, hands-on management, discipline, ongoing training, and innovative security developments.
“Our services range across different industries including residential and golf estates, shopping centres, casinos, government, health and education, and airports and hospitality. Our other services are Fidelity SecureDrive (vehicle tracking), Fidelity SecureFire, Fidelity Cleaning Service s and Sensormatic – a retail management software solution,” explains Craig Burden, Ballito Branch Manager at Fidelity ADT.
Fidelity ADT’s smart security systems empower homeowners to monitor and control their home, even when they’re away.
“The Qolsys system is the ultimate solution in smart home security as it transforms the way you interact with your home using SecureConnect. With it, an outdoor detector triggers a camera and records a video clip, allowing visitors to be verified by the homeonwe before they can enter the house. It also has advanced video analytic rules to detect human, vehicle, and animal movement combined with trip wires or ground zones that are setup with the outdoor detectors to switch lights on after sunset when an activation is detected to deter possible preparators. The Qolsys system also allows voice annunciation when a detector is violated in the disarmed state of the panel, thus notifying the homeowner that there is movement in their property,” he adds.
Apart from security and perimeter control, the system also allows for smoke and heat detection for your Solar battery solution or kitchen. “Here, you can control a range of functions including lighting, garage doors, pool pumps and appliances programmed to different scenarios, as well as keeping track of schedules like when the kids get back from school. All this is controlled from your smartphone – no matter where you are.”
“The Qolsys system is the ultimate solution in smart home security”
Burden says Fidelity ADT’s automation solutions simplify everyday life while keeping security tight, “In a flourish of technical wizardry, SecureConnect’s Wi-Fi and LTE cellular services allow for custom safety rules such as turning on an exterior light when the driveway sensor nudges, unlocking the front door when you disarm the system via your cell phone’s Bluetooth connection, and viewing your driveway camera alerts for unknown vehicles or pedestrians. This way, you can take care of all your safety needs in a harmonious way.”
Fidelity prides itself on offering their customers complete peace of mind, “Each and every solution can be tailored to a customer’s specific needs. The integration of security in and around the property i.e. turning on the pool pump, scheduling the geyser, and switching lights off where there is no movement for a specific time, can also save expenses towards the homeowner while keeping their property secure,” says Burden.
With sustainability becoming a top priority for many homeowners, Burden adds that eco-conscious solutions fit well into their security and automation services, “With Z-wave devices that automate and control lighting and thermostat temperatures, switch the geyser on and off, and overall save power on the property, a home becomes eco-friendly, and more so, if a solar system is installed and integrated with Qolsys.”
We get to know a few local mountain bike riders and where their love for the sport stems from!
Where It All Started
Always having been passionate about outdoor activities, she found mountain biking to be a great alternative to running. The excitement of discovering
and exploring new trails and the sense of adventure drew her in and has kept her hooked ever since. She also enjoys introducing people to the trails and taking them on their first ride is always a special moment.
The Favourite Trail
At Holla Trails, her go-to is Blue. With its mix of beauty and challenges, you get to ride through stunning landscapes while testing your control and skill.
Finding the Rush
Riding the trails gives her a sense of freedom and awe. It’s a relaxing and rejuvenating experience, being surrounded by nature and breathing fresh air. It’s a great escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Can’t Ride Without It
Aside from the essentials like a wellmaintained bike, helmet, and water bottle, Eunice’s most essential “gear” is her riding partner, Taryn. Having a trusted buddy by her side makes every ride safer and more fun!
A Defining Milestone
For her, this sport isn’t about racing or competing, it’s a way to stay active, clear her mind, and connect with nature. Her greatest achievement to date would be how she has been able to show up consistently, pushing herself to improve her skills and enjoy the ride. Also, being appointed as an ambassador for Holla Trails is a huge honour, recognising her passion and commitment.

Where It All Started
When he was in a rough situation a few years ago, and struggling with his mental health, a friend introduced him to mountain biking. He found himself hooked from the first ride, and what started as an escape became a passion. The sport taught him discipline and resilience, keeping him constantly challenged mentally and with physical benefits.
The Favourite Trail
endurance, fast downhills to get the adrenaline pumping, and a dash of technical single track, the Pink Trail at Holla Trails is Joni’s favourite. Every ride on it feels different, he loves the mix of challenges and fun.
Finding the Rush
Joni describes the moment you hit the trails as a moment in time where everything else fades away.
As you focus on the track ahead, the excitement and sense of freedom create a different state of mind where the outside world fades away
and it’s just the pedal strokes and the rhythm of the ride.
Can’t Ride Without It
Before you know it, hours have passed while you’re out on the trails, so Joni never rides without a good coat or two of sunblock. Staying protected from the sun’s UV rays means he is free to keep enjoying the rides without worrying about the consequences of a bad sunburn later on!
A Defining Milestone
From those he’s most proud of achieving, finishing the Berg100 and Tour D’Urban come up first. The Tour D’urban was especially memorable since he snapped his chain and had to complete the race using only his last eight gears! Losing 25kg is also a point of success for him, pushing his friends and showing up himself to continue training is a huge win. Lastly, becoming a Holla trails ambassador is also an amazing milestone, getting to represent them doing a sport he is passionate about.

Where It All Started
Growing up in Zambia, watching his dad compete in local races piqued his interest in the sport. After moving to South Africa, the races around Holla Trails finally convinced him to join in.
The Favourite Trail
Although Joshua has done a lot of trails, the old Maroon Trail at Holla Trails was one that really stood out for him. He enjoyed the technical routes which challenged him when he first started out.
Finding the Rush
This is a thrilling sport, and Joshua finds having his heart rate elevated while hitting jumps or taking a bend speedily to be really enjoyable!
Can’t Ride Without It
Staying hydrated is important in any physical activity, and
Joshua makes sure he rides with his water bottle in every session. Liquids replenish important electrolytes and not only support the current session but also sustain performance in the following sessions.
A Defining Milestone
Being selected for Grenke Auto Eder, the Junior development team for the Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe World Tour Team. Definitely a proud and memorable achievement for him so far!

Faith
in Full Colour
From vibrant murals to powerful lyrics, Dylan Smith uses creativity to speak a language that resonates with today’s generation, one rooted in faith, fatherhood, and a radical personal transformation. A creative entrepreneur and father of two, Dylan’s journey is far from conventional. Yet it is precisely this blend of bold expression and deep conviction that makes his story worth telling.
“I’ve always questioned everything,” Dylan shares. “But faith became part of my creative comeback - it’s now central to my expression.” His childhood spark for creativity was never lost, even through seasons of heartache, brokenness, and reconnection. As a rapper and
graffiti artist, Dylan channels his talents into something bigger than himselfsomething eternal. His story of faith didn’t unfold overnight. It began with the slow burn of a broken family and the ache of disconnection, but it ignited in a single, defining spiritual encounter that changed everything. “It left no question about the reality of God,” he says. “Jesus Christ met me in a radical way.”
Since then, Dylan has devoted his life to walking with God and sharing that journey with others, especially the youth. Becoming a father himself revealed his own weaknesses and the depth of his need for God’s grace. “It shaped my character to be more Christ-like,” he explains. “My mission now is to nurture
my relationship with God, my wife, and my children. Everything else flows from that.” His artistry took a turn early on when spray painting transformed from tagging to storytelling. “It became less about my name and more about making a positive impact,” he says. That same desire fuels his rap. A lifelong lover of poetry and hiphop, Dylan found his voice when he saw a pastor rapping at a church event. “I was hooked. I’d found an incredible vehicle - hip-hop - for an even more profound message: the Gospel.” Dylan’s lyrics are bold and relatable. In a world where hip hop dominates charts and street culture, he’s using it to bring life. “Young people already speak the language,” he says. “I’m just delivering a more uplifting message.” That message? You are loved. Love
powerful way to do that.” The challenge, he admits, is helping young people integrate their faith into daily life, especially in a world that often seems indifferent or even hostile to belief. His advice? Be real. Be present. “Church can happen at a skatepark or over coffee,” he says. “It’s about connection, not buildings.” For parents, Dylan offers wisdom forged in the fires of experience. “Worrying won’t get you anywhere. Lead by example. Keep Christ at the centre. Eat together. Pray together.” He encourages openness to unconventional expressions of faith. “Remember - the religious were the ones who took Jesus out. God is full of surprises.” Above all, he wants parents to remember that the youth must figure things out for themselves, in an atmosphere of love, grace, and guidance. “Be firm but flexible. Hold space. That’s how they grow.” Balancing creativity, ministry, and family isn’t easy, but Dylan’s strength comes from God. “The pressure is real. But creativity thrives in constraint. I stay grounded by spending time in His word every day.”
others. Express yourself. Jesus is cool. Be a beacon of positive change. His debut single on Spotify, “When I Met You” - I Am The WordSmith, captures the spiritual turning point in his life. “It’s self-explanatory,” he says. “Take a listen.” But Dylan’s mission isn’t just about art. It’s about reaching young hearts. He believes today’s youth are hungry, not for fame or fortune, but for love and belonging. “Everything boils down to the need to be loved,” he explains. “Healthy communities start with healthy individuals, and that begins with knowing your worth. I believe the Gospel is the most
On the hard days, he leans on his family, his faith, and the knowledge that his journey has a purpose. “I’m not perfect, but He is. As long as I don’t give up, I’m destined to win.”
So, what’s next for Dylan Smith? “To focus on the most potent force for change: my family.” And with that, he continues his mission - spreading light, love, and the message of Christ, one rhyme, one mural, one life at a time.
@i_am_thewordsmith
This Father’s Day, we’re shining a light on four local dads who opened up about the joys, challenges, and lessons that have shaped their journeys through fatherhood.
Craig Burden
The manager for the Fidelity Services Group for the North Coast, and a proud father to two beautiful girls, Daisy (4) and Millie (16 months).
Funniest Moment
Daisy is my little princess, and an amazing big sister to Millie. We took Father Steven from the All Saints Catholic Church out for dinner to La Piazza one evening, the following day Daisy told all her friends she “had pizza with God last night for dinner”.
Parenting Hack
As parents, you need to put your phones away when it is family time. Not just silent or upside down, but out of reach. You need to show your kids that they are your priority at that moment. Do not parent on autopilot; give them your full, undivided attention. You can return any calls, unanswered WhatsApps can wait, and social media scrolling in the presence of your kids is the worst message you can send to them. Also, never just hand them your phone to keep them busy, show them how precious your time with them is and how much it means to you. This is a time you need to cherish and will never get back.
Unexpected Skill
Daisy and Millie have taught me so much, especially patience and mindfulness, to live in the moment and to embrace the simplicity of life. To let go of any worries and to love and enjoy the journey rather than focus on a destination has been an invaluable lesson. The man who loves walking will walk further than the man who loves the destination.
Best Part of The Day
Our evening walks before dinner time. We take our dog Mowgli for a walk to wrap up the day. Millie shouts and waves at any barking dogs while Daisy tells me all about her day at school and even tries to teach me any new songs she has learned. This is a special time for us every day.
Advice
The battles you refuse to fight, your kids will have to fight. Ensure to model the behaviour and values you
want them to grow into. They are like sponges and absorb so much through observing. Be consistent when teaching them these values.
What I Hope My Kids Always remember
They were my inspiration and motivation in everything I did. I always strived to be the best version of myself for them. I always did my best to prioritise them and to make them proud, because their happiness and well-being meant everything to me.
J Sbu
A Drive Show Host on ECR and proud father to Zanda (8). His journey into fatherhood began with his firstborn, Smanga, who heartbreakingly passed away in the womb at seven months. Smanga’s memory remains a cherished part of his life, honoured by speaking his name.
Funniest Moment
Zanda is such a little talker - no idea where he gets that from… I mean, his dad’s just a radio presenter, right? One of the funniest things he does is act out his favourite cartoon characters - Peppa Pig, Power Rangers - you name it. The cutest thing ever is when he tries to pull off the Power Ranger stunts. He’ll come at me with a serious face, ready to strike, like I’m the villain in his imaginary battle.
Parenting Hack
Listen to your child - even when what they say seems unnecessary. Kids need to feel heard, and when they do, they learn the value of both speaking and listening. It builds trust and teaches them how to communicate with respect.
Best Part of The Day
Waking up together as a family feels like such a blessing - I get to start the day with the people I love most. There’s something special about those little moments, like brushing our teeth side by side or helping him get ready for school. Another highlight is our drive to school. Once, he casually said that he has a girlfriend, so now I always tease him, telling him to look sharp and do his best so his crush can notice him.
Advice
I wish someone had told me this earlier: your child will learn more from who you are than from what you say. It’s easy to get caught up in what we’re teaching them with our words,
but the real lessons come from how we show up in their lives.
Most rewarding “Dad Moment”
Receiving last year’s report card. He did incredibly well, above average in all his subjects, and that meant so much to me. I’ve made it a mission to give him a better primary education than I had, so seeing that reflected in his progress was a proud moment. Any parent will tell you, when your child does well at school, it’s not just a win for them - it feels like a win for you too.
What I Hope My Kids Always remember
I hope my son will always remember how deeply he was supported and that his dad always tried to lead by
example. I want him to look back and see the hard work I put in - not for recognition, but so that he could have a life filled with opportunities, stability, and joy. More than anything, I want him to feel how much he was loved and how I tried to be present in every moment.
Jody Thaver
Dr Jody A. Thaver is a proud single father, entrepreneur, and international business advisor. His journey has been shaped by deep love, painful loss, and unwavering faith. He is a dad of two incredible kids; late daughter Andrea Michaela, a talented ballerina and singer; and son Josiah Eathen (21), a driven young entrepreneur and gifted musician now living in oslo. Life hasn’t been easy, but raising Josiah and honouring Andrea’s memory has given him purpose and strength to keep going.
Parenting Hack
“Parenthood is not a democracy.” That mantra has guided me through the ups and downs. I believe our role as parents is to lead, teach, and love with strength and clarity. Children need parents, not peers. Another truth
I hold onto: our ceilings must become our children’s floors - not their flaws. It’s about creating a strong foundation they can build upon.
Life Lessons
My children have been my greatest teachers. Andrea, my late daughter, used to say, “Stand up. Show up. Stand out.” She inspired me to live boldly and with purpose. Josiah reminds me, “When people show you who they are… believe them.” From them, I’ve learned to forgive, to live as a human being and not a human doing, and
to appreciate the little things. Their wisdom lives in everything I do - from mentoring young entrepreneurs and running businesses to serving on global platforms.
Advice
I wish someone had reminded me of the importance of balance. In the pursuit of providing and pushing forward, we must never forget to capture the moments. The magic is in those small, fleeting, yet precious memories with your children.
Most rewarding “Dad Moment”
There’s one video I hold especially close - of Andrea dancing before God around a campfire, rededicating her life to Jesus the night before her tragic passing. It brings me peace to know she left this world with joy in her heart. And with Josiah, it’s witnessing the fire within him, watching him become his own man, with strength, integrity, and vision. He truly lives up to his name. My proudest reward is simply being his father.
My Children Inspired My Work
Andrea wanted to teach children with special needs. Though she’s no longer with us, I feel I’m continuing her legacy through the Andream Foundation, created in her honour to help young girls reach for their dreams. My late daughter and my late mum inspired the humanitarian work I now dedicate my time to. Their compassion and dreams live on in me.
Legacy
Our name means warrior, and we come from a lineage of strength and courage - my grandfather was a decorated WWII soldier, and my father met the royal family as a result of that service. I want my legacy to be more than material success; I want it to be a legacy of purpose fulfilled. My greatest hope is that the seeds I’ve plantedvalues of integrity, compassion, and determination - echo through time in my son’s life and beyond.
Luyanda Mothiba
Luyanda is fortunate enough to work a hybrid model and is only required to be in the office three times a week. He is also in a sales role, therefore knows what’s expected of him, which allows him to plan his time and schedule. Their newest addition, Amayah, is only five-months-old, daddy's little princess. His eldest, Aexel, is twoyears-old and is only now learning to talk. At this age, Luyanda says they are absolute sponges, absorbing every word you say, so he is guilty of teaching him a foul word here and there.
Parenting Hack
Keep it moving. Don’t dwell on things you can’t change; it’s tough at first, but it gets better over time.
Unexpected Skill
Running at 100% on limited sleep has become the norm. The hardest part of parenting is sleep deprivation, so I now enjoy power naps whenever I can get them.
Best Part of The Day
The happiness on his face when he sees me at the end of the school day!
Advice
Accept the fact that parents and family may not help, and that's okay. Do the best you can every day. Protect your marriage and always set an example for your kids and family.
What I Hope My Kids Always remember
Nothing is more important in this world to me than being their father. It’s easy to be a parent and provider, a father leads his family with intention. I see so much of me in my son; he’s an absolute animal. I want him to be the most authentic version of himself and not compromise or conform to others.
Escape In Time
Are you ready to put your puzzle-solving skills to the test? Join the FabMags team as we step into the thrilling world of Mindgame Escape at Tiffany’s Shopping Centre in Salt Rock - where three immersive escape rooms, ticking clocks, and cryptic clues await.
WoRdS Kai Coates
Every team had a blast deciphering codes, riddles, and puzzles to get keys and clues
If anyone is like me and enjoys brain-thinking movies, especially Sherlock Holmes, where you sit on the couch and act like a detective, then there is an activity you will love! Enter a world where reality pauses, time ticks loudly in your ears, and only collaboration, quick thinking, and a touch of courage will set you free.
Tucked away in the bustling Tiffany’s Shopping Centre in Salt Rock is Mindgame Escape - the ultimate live-action adventure where you and your friends, family or team are not just participants, but protagonists in a thrilling race against the clock.
Whether you're a group of curious first-timers, puzzle fanatics, gamers looking to level up in real life, or colleagues wanting to trade office talk for secret codes and hidden compartments, Mindgame Escape has a room (and a challenge) for everyone. Designed to test your communication, problem-solving and teamwork under pressure, it’s the kind of experience that leaves your heart racing and your brain buzzing - long after the door has swung open.
With their Breakout Package option, for team building and parties, you can get your full office to enjoy a thrilling few hours trying to escape the different rooms. Their packages host big groups of 10-42 people, and you can order delicious snack platters at a separate cost to feed the masses and the brains to keep on solving puzzles.
The Salt Rock branch boasts three immersive, story-rich escape rooms:
• Medieval Magic: a high-stakes fantasy mission to save a knight and a kingdom from a sorceress’s dark spell.
• Escape to Treasure Island: a high-energy heist on a billionaire’s secret island - ideal for budding pirates and daring teens.
• The Great Time Escape: a sci-fi inspired journey through time to rescue a lost scientist and rewrite history.
No matter the scenario, one thing remains constant - you’ll have 60 minutes, a locked door, and only
your team’s wits to get you out. As I soon discovered, when the pressure is on and the clues start coming thick and fast, Mindgame Escape isn’t just a game - it’s a brilliant test of character, creativity, and connection.
As you enter their location at Tiffany’s Shopping Centre, you will see three doors, each painted a different colour: red, blue, and green, which lead to each escape room. The escape master on duty that day was Courtney, who welcomed us to the next few hours of brain-tinkering fun. Before we started, there were a few fun riddles on the one wall to warm up our brains. It was fun to see the whole FabMags team take a crack at them together. We all had to watch the introductory and rules video, which explained how the escape room works and that we all get one phone, should we need to call for a clue. Then, we split into three groups (organised by me and Google randomiser) to tackle the three rooms.
Each room is meticulously decorated per theme, which surely makes your
mind escape to another world. With the rooms having different difficulty levels, and only 60 minutes to escape, I can assure you that the Medieval Magic room with the 5/5 difficulty rating is a hard one to crack. It only has a 30% success rate - so if you like a challenge, this room is for you! After the first round of 60 minutes, the team was buzzing in the waiting area - but you couldn’t tell anyone anything about the room you just did, because we could all do a different room for our second round. Luckily, this time my team chose a less difficult room where we needed to unlock our science brains, and we escaped! Every team had a blast deciphering codes, riddles, and
puzzles to get keys and clues. This activity is fun for families, friends, and work colleagues alike - it challenges your teamwork skills and your outof-the-box thinking. But remember, sometimes the simplest answers are the correct ones.
After our amazing morning, we all set back to the office and shared our stories and experiences, especially all the laughs. Thank you, Mindgame Escape, for the most engaging, thrilling, and exciting team-building experience. This won’t be the last time seeing us, I know many of us will be back to conquer the rooms again and hopefully make new records.
So, grab your magnifying glass and switch your detective brain on, gather your group, and try to escape a room in 60 minutes. Oh, did I forget to mention that there are times to beat from previous groups? You better hurry!

The Dolphins Are Building a Community - And They Need You
WoRdS Kai Coates | PHoToS PreCision PhotoGraPhy
In a world where so much focus is placed on the scoreboard, it’s easy to forget the deeper value of sport - the way it shapes futures, strengthens communities, and unites people across backgrounds. But for the Ballito Dolphins Rugby Club, that’s the heart of everything they do. And now, they’re inviting the Ballito community and local businesses to be part of something bigger.
Founded in 2002 by passionate local rugby players, the Dolphins were built on pride, perseverance, and a desire to bring competitive senior rugby to the North Coast. Their dedication quickly paid off as they rose through the ranks, earning a spot in the KZN Rugby Union 1st Division by 2007 - a position they’ve held proudly ever since. This founding vision to be a top-level team rooted in community still drives the Dolphins today, but to reach their next level of
impact, they need the village to rally behind them. The Club’s Director, Craig Dawson, got involved in the club when his child wanted to play for the junior team. What started as support for his own quickly became a mission to uplift everyone’s children through sport. He envisions a future where the Dolphins have a permanent home field, a vibrant clubhouse, and become a true hub for development, sport, and connection. “We continue doing what we can - now we need the community to help us do more,” Craig says.
The club has already taken steps, like launching their ‘Adopt a Dolphin’ sponsorship initiative - designed specifically for local businesses to get involved, gain visibility, and show their support in a meaningful way with the senior team players.
Why It Matters to our Youth
At its core, the Dolphins are a development club. Mark Svenningsen, the Club Chairman, runs youth clinics and brings in players from township areas, often introducing them to the game for the first time. “We have had players who go on to represent provincial, national, and international teams, such as Mhlehli “Giraffe” Dlamini (The Bulls main squad and is now playing for Haifa in Israel) and Ali Thiam (The Bulls Academy and was invited to the U20 Junior Bok trials)”
Muzi Luthuli, 2nd Team Coach, mentioned that development needs consistency - and consistency needs funding. Muzi
is a Northwood boy alumnus and played for the Northwood Crusaders Rugby Club before moving to Maidstone and joining the Ballito Dolphins Rugby Club. He quickly became captain but one day, he got tackled down during a game which resulted in a broken hip. And now, his love and skill for the game carries on through his coaching.
The teams permanently train at Umhlali Preparatory School. A permanent home field will greatly improve the community connection and open doors, not just for on-site branding, advertising and event-based activations, but sustainability in the Club and its players, plus a bonus
for a community club. They aim to inspire the youth and junior teams by creating an ‘Inspirational and Aspirational’ path, turning their 1st team players into local heroes akin to Siya Kolisi. Thus, local business support isn’t just a donation - it’s an investment in lives, loyalty, and local pride.
What
the Players Say
Players like Keegan Goosen, who was part of the junior team as a kid and is now a 1st Team player, says, “When you’re backed by your town, you feel like you’re playing for something bigger,” he adds.
Halalisani Ngcobo, 2nd Team player, from a nearby rural community, agrees. “It’s like
having 60 extra players when the fans are there,” he says.
Carlo Gresse, 1st Team Captain, describes the Dolphins as a reflection of Ballito itself - diverse, full of energy, and familyfocused. “We want people to see what this is about. Come down, bring your kids, and feel the vibe. This is for everyone.”
Player Tembelani Sibuta says, “It’s more than rugby. It’s one heart, one
beat. Fans showing up to our games grows our community, but everything needs funding.”
Jared Stanford, 1st Team Head Coach, says, “Sport teaches resilience, discipline, teamwork. That’s what we’re giving young people.” He envisions a permanent home ground that hosts not just games, but a space for the community and future development.

Barn Market Experience
Journey
From a young age, Charles Moodley was fascinated by the intricate mechanics of timepieces. Discover how this passion led him to become a skilled watchmaker and clock repairer.
Growing up in Sea Cow Lake, Newlands, Charles Moodley's life story is one of remarkable perseverance and dedication. Working alongside his mother on a farm, he'd help plant vegetables destined for the Durban morning market. This early experience instilled in him a strong sense of responsibility and resourcefulness that would shape his future endeavours.
A pivotal moment in Charles' life came when his father's watch stopped working. Given his father's disability, he felt compelled to act. After a day of working at the market, he visited Victoria Street in Durban and approached a watch repairer, inquiring about purchasing a screwdriver, chemicals, tweezers, and watch oil, and was directed to Soldiers' Way. After dismantling and cleaning each
component meticulously, he carefully reassembled the watch, fitting the tiny parts back together with precision. To his delight, the watch was working again. "My dad shared in the proudest moment and excitement, and started telling the neighbours. This newly found enthusiasm and excitement led me to fix everyone's clocks and watches at no charge. Hearing the tick-tock return was a jubilant moment!" he exclaimed.
Charles approached several watch repair companies, who initially doubted him. Undeterred, he asked for a chance to prove himself. They gave him watches to repair, and he delivered results that delighted and astonished them. This success led to a long-term partnership, with the companies trusting him with more timepieces. As they grew confident in his skills, he was soon appointed as an official employee. Some time later, he took on a new opportunity to work
Time is free, but it's priceless. You can't own it, but you can use it. You can't keep it, but you can spend it. Once you've lost it, you can't get it back - Harvey Mackay
with OMEGA agents, the renowned Swiss luxury watch brand, leveraging his expertise to new heights. Word spread about him, and he was introduced to two brothers, renowned watch technicians and watchmakers from Switzerland. With each passing day, he learned more, honing his skills under their expert guidance. " They put me under intense training, and they were very strict with standards, precision, and accuracy. They did not accept 99% - they wanted 100%," Charles said. He learned under the best, acquired knowledge and experience, and as he worked over the years, he had saved up to purchase his own tools.
"The day came when I told my bosses my intention to start my own business. They felt heavy at heart to let me go, but they did. My bosses actually carried my bag and umbrella to the car; I felt like a celebrity. And they told me that if I ever needed to return, their doors were wide open." In 1969, Charles established his own business in Tongaat, Dynamic Watch & Clock Repairs. He became a fixture in the community, operating his shop for
about 35 years before relocating to Ballito. The move marked a new chapter, and he was welcomed by everyone, as Ballito had no watchmaker to call its own. Setting up shop took a few weeks, involving flyers, adverts, and more. "I recall the morning of the opening. There was a long line of eager customers waiting to meet and greet me with treasured possessions, heirlooms, and pocket watches," said Charles. Ballito experienced a new level of excitement, and he was at the centre of it, filled with a newfound energy. It was truly a momentous occasion. They have built an impressive clientele, with customers often remarking that they feel 'refreshed' after a visit, enjoying the conversation and laughter that accompany the service. Some clients have even described the experience as feeling like part of an extended family. He's been in Ballito for 20 years now, and his business has expanded to receive jobs from all over the country and even internationally, with items often arriving by ship.
With over five decades of experience, he's spent his time researching, repairing,
and collecting watches, and has even worked on complex clocks for ships and aircraft, demonstrating his broad expertise in precision mechanics. But Charles' work extends beyond mere repair; it is about restoration and preservation. This trade is unique, with a constant influx of unusual timepieces and tools to showcase.
Customers frequently arrive with sentimental clocks and watches that have been passed down through generations. "The last grandfather clock I worked on was 620-years-old. This was an absolute challenge, as some parts were missing and needed to be made by hand, which I successfully crafted. One can only imagine how elated I was at the repair and restoration. The customer was ecstatic, and no words could express the satisfaction I felt," he said. Charles also restored a carriage clock from the 1914 World War I era. He said his first thought was that it would have been destined for the scrap yard, but he took on the challenge and restored it to its former glory, working tirelessly on it. The final product was unbelievable. The customer refused to
believe it was the same clock.
“When I receive an intricate timepiece, it's challenging to repair and restore. The intricacy of its inner workings is fascinating and deserves utmost respect, requiring concentration, precision, and accuracy, accompanied by steady hands and good eyesight.”
Problem-finding can be critical and mentally draining, but dedication and passion are the driving forces that give him renewed energy. Bringing a piece back to life, hearing its heartbeat, gives him immense joy, a sense of accomplishment, and deep satisfaction. “My heart skips a beat seeing tears of joy stream down customers' faces when they see their sentimental clock or watch given another chance to live. There's no greater joy than seeing a happy chappy. All my life, I've worked with time, and it's a testament to one's ability to appreciate every second that goes by. It's not just about possessing a trade or skill; it's about one's potent passion and dedication.”

IN BUSINESS
Shaping Salt rock's dining scene, brothers Andile and Ayanda's journey in the restaurant industry is nothing short of inspiring. read on to discover how they turned their dreams into reality and what's next for their growing empire.
THE STorY
Growing up, I (Andile) wanted to be an actor, and Ayanda wanted to be an accountant. Our humble beginnings taught us to be committed to our craft and never give up. Hospitality is a constant grind, you have to be committed. It’s also important to know that not every day is going to be a great day, so you can’t give up over a few challenging days.
THE JoUrNEY
The Litchi Party – how did it come about and what was the takeaway for your business?
Litchi Party was our first big annual event outside of the regular weekto-week stuff. Litchi Party 2013 elevated the brand, but 2014 was the breakthrough year that changed the way we looked at business. Once you’ve unlocked a certain level in your mindset, there is a shift in your self-confidence.
What key lessons from hosting the Litchi Party helped you in the restaurant world?
The details of organising a festival event that can cater to up to 5000 attendees require a lot more preparation than a very busy day/week in hospitality. So our capacity for organising multiple things simultaneously was well built up before we got started in our hospitality businesses.
How did your journey into the restaurant industry begin?
During our student years, we waited tables and bartended, and that is when our love for the industry began. However, opening your own restaurant in your early 20s is a lot harder than starting an events business (which isn’t easy either, just easier than a restaurant).
THE rESTAUrANTS
How did you decide on the distinct concept for each of your restaurants? So we never planned to open three new venues at the same time; however, after we had sold Dantè in Umhlanga to a Johannesburg group, we were on the hunt for the next big thing. When we found the space in Salt Rock City, the conversation evolved to doing the three at once. Dantè was a three-storey venue, the first in KZN in recent years. That chapter also helped us back ourselves to go for three venues on one level beside each other. Each one had to have its own identity and appeal, suited to its offering but also complement its sister venue.
What’s been the most rewarding part of building your restaurants in Salt rock? The Greater Salt Rock area is an emerging market. There is still so much to happen and be developed, so it makes the future very exciting. There are some great people in the area, and we are just happy to contribute our little bit and be part of the area’s growth.
Do you have any signature dishes that define your brand across all locations?
It’s always hard to pin it to one dish because people generally have different tastes and desires. Donna, being Italian, means the dishes to try are our pizza and pasta. Our handstretched sourdough pizzas are hard to beat. Personally, the Bacon Avo Feta pizza is the best one. Our prawn pasta is a crowd favourite.
Butcher & Wine is a grill and sushi restaurant. Not everyone knew that we offered sushi initially, however, we have become the go-to sushi place in Salt Rock. We have amazing sushi, if I may say so myself. On the grills, our 200g sirloin is dry-aged and an absolute treat, followed by the gourmet burgers, the Philadelphia and Camembert are top of the list if you like meat and cheese.
BUSINESS DYNAMIC
Is it easier or harder working together as brothers in business? We are identical twins and have done pretty much EVERYTHING together.
It’s definitely easier to be brothers in business. One of our favourite sayings is “iron sharpens iron”, so we build and grind together with an aligned vision.
How do you split the responsibilities? I am definitely more on the creative and marketing side of things. Ayanda is very involved with the operations and finances. We are lucky that we have had a big team of staff before, and we’ve run a mega venue, so it makes things slightly easier.
What’s one thing you admire most about each other?
Ayanda’s willingness to get stuck into the admin (laughing). Andile is a people person and naturally patient.
THE FUTUrE
Are there more restaurant concepts in the works?
Our group has grown since our launch in Salt Rock. We have taken on more hospitality businesses and are now operating five venues in the La Vie Hospitality Group. We have a few other concepts that appeal to us, however, we have a very specific business we
want to do in the near future. Without giving away too much, it will be a monster of a business.
What advice do you have for aspiring restaurateurs?
A good place to start is being a server, waitron or bartender. Get stuck in and get your hands dirty. Learn what good service and looking after customers is about. Once you've put in the time on weekends and peak holiday seasons, if you're still passionate about the industry, then go for it. Give it your best shot, with a clear understanding that it's a demanding field.
How would you like to be remembered in the local dining scene in Salt rock?
We would love them to remember the dynamic and modern offering available in Salt Rock that caters to every occasion, from a family outing (Donna) to a date night (Butcher & Wine) or a celebratory drink (Saint Yves).

Redd Tile opened its doors on March 12, 2004, with the vision of solving people's flooring dilemmas and providing top-quality flooring products to Ballito and surrounding regions. That focus has not changed; it has simply expanded to include other tile stores and flooring merchants.
Memorable Experience/s
My earliest memory was about a week after opening our doors. Two lovely elderly women visited Ballito's "first-ever" flooring company, and one exclaimed out of the blue, "Wow! What a lovely tile store, let's see how long you last!" I was shocked and asked, "Why the unusual comment?" She said, "I was born in Ballito, and now I'm old. I've seen many businesses come and go. As a Ballito resident, I want to drink my champagne out of a beer bottle." Her response has stayed with me ever since, setting us on a path that has helped us navigate turbulent times for 21 years.
Core Values
We believe that quality, service, and value shouldn't be compromised. Our national client base reflects this commitment.

A FENTASTIC Easter Adventure
Join us as we take you through our epic weekend of music and magic at Splashy Fen, South Africa’s friendliest music festival.
WHAT. A. WEEKEND!
Splashy Fen 2025 was pure magic. I set off with my fiancé Jenaylen, my brother Sean, and our good friend Trevino, buzzing with excitement for three nights of camping, music, and mountain air. We left Durban at about 15:00. (a little later than planned), determined to be well-prepared for our adventure. After a scenic drive, we arrived at the Underberg Country Club at about 20:00 to collect our armbands. The moment we stepped out of the car, the icy Underberg breeze welcomed us - it was pitch black, but we could feel the mountains around us.
From there, it was a bumpy 14km dirt road to the festival grounds. Splashy’s staff were nothing short of amazingfriendly, warm, and genuinely helpful.
Every twist and turn led to a discovery - whether it was a towering dragon or a twisted tree-like structure, it added a layer of wonder to the experience
They took time to chat with us and guided us toward a solid camping spot. Finding one in the dark was tricky (and a little stressful), but Sean and Trevino, the Splashy veterans, used the map from the festival’s site to navigate. After about 15 minutes of exploring the general camping area, we got lucky and snagged a great spot. With teamwork, headlights, and lots of laughs, we had camp set up within an hour.
Now it was time to dive into the festival! We took a 600m stroll toward the main eating and entertainment area. The path was beautifully lit with string lights and laid out with wood chips - no muddy shoes here! It created this
warm, inviting farm-style vibe that immediately put us at ease. The Acoustic Tent was our first big stop - and wow, were we spoiled for choice! Over 30 food stalls surrounded the tent, each bursting with aroma and flavour. Whether you were craving loaded nachos, sizzling ribs, vegan curries, woodfired pizzas, gourmet burgers, or sweet treats like churros and bubble waffles - Splashy had it all. We hadn’t packed any food, so we were counting on Splashy to deliver, and honestly, they knocked it out of the park. Every meal felt like its own little adventure.
Later that night, we stumbled upon the Treehouse Stage, a dreamscape nestled deep within the forest.
breakfast while watching the drummers energise the crowd. One of our favourite daytime spots was the river. Families and groups made their way down early, picnic baskets and floaties in hand, ready to spend the day lounging to live music and DJs. The boys jumped into the icy water while I soaked in the sunshine, munching on a loaded Doritos nacho bowl.
By day, the beauty of the festival grounds came alive in a whole new way. Giant metal sculptures were scattered across the farm, each one unique and intriguing. Every twist and turn led to a discovery - whether it was a towering dragon or a twisted tree-like structure, it added a layer of wonder to the experience. Splashy also had a vibrant market area with over 30 stalls selling hand-crafted jewellery, boho fashion, quirky accessories, art pieces, and essential supplies. They even had a pop-up pharmacy for any forgotten bits and pieces. And for the ladies - an on-site salon offering braided hairstyles that was perfect for festival life! I treated myself to fresh braids with colourful extensions to match my outfits, and honestly, it was a lifesaver.
The mornings kicked off with energy - trail runs, yoga under the sky, flow classes, and drum circles. Early risers were rewarded with free coffee and warm drinks at the Marley Coffee tent, courtesy of ECR, which made those chilly mornings that much better. We did the trail run, then relaxed with
Splashy had a variety of performers, offering different genres of music at each stage. There were times we were left hoping that we could be in two places at once. The best we could do was to carefully divide our time between each of the stages. Splashy truly lit up at night when the headline performers hit the stage. Our favourite performers were GoodLuck and Housewife. GoodLuck delivered a breathtaking performance at the main stage whilst Housewife played on the decks by the BOMA tent with people dancing like nobody was watching - yes, we are those people. Despite the cold, nights were comfortable with the right gear. The warm showers in the morning were a pleasant surprise - clean, hot, and well-maintained. Splashy was exceptionally well-organised. The Woov App helped us stay on top of the music lineup, activities, and even track friends if we got separated. On Sunday morning, Easter was celebrated with a beautiful sunrise service hosted by the Red Frogs and complimentary Nutella pancakes - a sweet send-off.
This trip was everything we needed and more. Amazing music, thoughtful details, breathtaking views, and memories we’ll never forget. Splashy Fen, we’re hooked and we’re definitely coming back next year!
Picture glowing mushrooms dotting the ground, fluffy neon clouds hanging from the tent’s ceiling, and lights that shifted in sync with the music. It felt like a scene from Alice in Wonderland

The Power of Movement
Winter. The season of comfort food, extra layers, and every excuse in the book to skip a workout. “It’s too cold.”
“I’ll start next week.” Sound familiar?
As men, we know the importance of strength, endurance, and resilience - not just in the gym but in life. But here’s the catch: strength isn’t seasonal.
Why Strength Training Matters
As we age, muscle mass naturally declines. Strength training is the key to maintaining muscle, boosting testosterone, and preventing injuries. It improves posture, joint health, and even mental clarity. Think of it as insurance for your body; you invest now to avoid costly breakdowns later.
Move More, Live Better
You don’t need a gym to stay active. Small changes add up:
• Park further from the entrance.
• Carry your groceries instead of using a trolley.
• Do push-ups or squats while the kettle is boiling or while waiting for the food in the oven.
• Chase your kids around Sugar Rush Park or the playground (bonus: they’ll sleep better, and so will you).
• Take the stairs. Every time. No excuses.
Winter Warriors: Staying Motivated
• Find Your “Why” - Whether it’s playing with your kids, staying strong for your partner or proving your younger self wrong, lock in your reason.
• Buddy Up - Training with a friend keeps you accountable (and stops you from hibernating).
• Set a Winter Goal - Sign up for a race, master five pull-ups, or hit a new personal best.
• Train Smart, Not Long - Short, intense workouts get results. If you need guidance, that’s where I come in.
Let’s Get Moving
Movement is a lifelong investment. Whether it’s a brisk morning walk, a few push-ups between tasks, or chasing your kids around the park, staying active doesn’t have to be complicated. The key is consistency and finding ways to move that fit your lifestyle. There are always options if you’re looking for structure. An example is my group classes at Sugar Rush Park at 05:00 a.m. or private coaching, and I’ve just launched the Launch Lifestyle app - your pocket guide to health and movement.
Whatever path you choose, remember: strength isn’t seasonal, neither is your health. Keep moving, stay strong, and make this winter count.

What happened to the property market? With Q1 now behind us and 2024 sales data recorded through the Deeds Office, it’s the perfect time to assess buying trends and identify where most North Coast transactions occurred. Despite the year starting well, the first quarter was down on the prior quarter, with initial January 2025 demand fading due to political uncertainty and a shifting SA-US relationship. Consumer confidence plummeted from -6 to -20 in Q1 2025 from the prior quarter, indicating South African consumers were concerned and pressured. North Coast sellers are now relooking at pricing as a sales stall. Perfect for buyers wanting to secure excellent properties at aggressive pricing.
Having analysed all transfer data for the major trading estates along the North Coast, the following results are available. The highest trading estate was Simbithi with R515,150,377 in sales recorded across 103 transactions, of which R186,896,127 (36.28%) or 52 were sectional title sales trading at an average R16,471/sqm across the 11,347 sqm traded. Simbithi had 47 freehold sales amounting to R325,954,250 with an average price of R6,935,197. Simbithi had seven sales above R10m and two sales above R20m. Total trade in Simbithi is significantly down from the R1bn plus total sales Simbithi had enjoyed previously per annum.
The second highest trading estate was Zimbali, and here is the interesting thing - only by a margin of 7%. Zimbali had recorded total sales of R481,116,750 across 66 sales with an average price of R7,289,648. Of these sales, R183,071,750 (38.05%) or 37 were sectional title trading at an average rate
per sqm of R19,088 as measured across 9,591 sqm traded. Zimbali had 29 freehold sales measuring R298,045,000 at an average price of R10,277,414. The gap between Zimbali and Simbithi's sales value closed significantly for 2024. This may reflect the better value pricing currently available in Zimbali.
The two sales powerhouses of the North Coast are Zimbali and Simbithi, showing R996,267,127 in total sales for 2024. The next six largest estates by sales value were 1) Zululami with R171,987,000, as a younger estate doing phenomenally well. 2) Seaton Estate with R159,395,000 from 51 sales, all but one being vacant land. The Seaton/Zululami mega estate will mature with new incredible homes to rival the best the North Coast offers and become the third powerhouse soon enough. 3) Palm Lakes with R147,579,000 and an average price of R2,635,339 is a good-value family estate. 4) Brettenwood with R138,105,000 as an established residential estate, much loved by its residents. 5) Seaward Estates with R133,475,000 and an average price of R2,839,894 offering good value and excellent location close to all of Ballito's schools and amenities and a consistent well-trading estate, and 6) Dunkirk Estate with R91,426,000 which has the best beach club on Salt Rock main beach and a compelling reason to own a property in the estate. The total sales of the six highest-selling estates following Simbithi and Zimbali amount to R841,967,000 for the 2024 year, or 84.51% of the Simbithi/Zimbali total, putting into perspective the level of trade of the top two estates.
