A cultural center situated in bangalore for the conservation and propogation of the folk art forms for karnataka that are being endangered.

THESIS - SOCIAL AND COMMUNITY-ORIENTED DESIGN.

Why should folk art forms be preserved in karnataka ?

Karnataka being a state know for its rich folk art forms and culture.

As state is going through a rapid increase in urbanism in the past decade and due to this, few of the art forms are fading away due to ignorence.

The Karnataka government has established various academies dedicated to the comprehensive development of Kannada art forms and cultural activities. These academies host competitions, offer awards, and provide financial support like monthly allowances or pensions and apprentice scholarships. They also organize seminars, symposiums, and cultural exchange programs, encourage artists to showcase their talents at state and national levels, and publish valuable books

Streamlined Procedures: Simplifying bureaucratic processes for artists and projects.

Improved Coordination: Fostering collaboration between government agencies, artists, and communities.

Community-Based Approaches: Empowering local communities to actively participate in preservation efforts.

Balanced Priorities: Ensuring all art forms receive fair attention and support.

How should these Art forms be protected ?

Long-Term Commitment and Documenting: Implementing sustainable strategies for ongoing preservation.

Valuing Intangible Heritage: Recognizing the importance of cultural knowledge and skills beyond physical artifacts.

Raising Public Awareness: Educating the public about the significance of folk art and its preservation.

Decentralization: Empowering regional and local levels to oversee and manage preservation efforts.

DESIGN BRIEF

-Every society's cultural heritage is unique, precious and irreplaceable, providing its members with a sense of community and belonging while providing them a way through which the world is viewed and understood making its preservation and propagation important. The state of Karnataka is rich in various art forms, especially in its folk and rural arts, thanks to its regional and geographic diversity.

-This diversity, however, is fast disappearing due to a multitude of reasons including a lack of patronage, lack of awareness, etc., with many of these art forms tethering on the edge of being lost completely. While a few forms of folk art such as Chittra, Bhutta khala, Yekshagana have seen a resurgence due to a wider presence in digital media, others such as would soon be lost if immediate attention is not paid to their preservation and increased dissemination.

-This thesis is, therefore, an attempt to arrive at a suitable solution to this, through the design of a dedicated Folk Art Center, that would be focused on preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the region, the centre aims to serve as a dynamic space for the documentation, exhibition, and rejuvenation of fading folk art forms. The design would integrate elements of sustainability, cultural inclusivity, and community engagement to ensure the long-term viability of the centre. Through thoughtful spatial planning and interactive exhibits, the proposed centre seeks to ignite renewed interest and participation in Karnataka's folk arts, fostering a sense of pride and ownership among local communities.

The aim is to propose an architectural design that serves as a comprehensive center for preserving and protecting by showcasing

Objective 01 Establishing the importance and the need for the conservation of folk art forms.

Objective 02 To understand/study how folk art forms are protected and preserved across the world(in order to arise at the point of parameters that would give the preservation and propagation of folk art forms in Karnataka.

Objective 03 : To design a suitable form that would enable the preservation and propagation of the folk art forms for the future generation

To educate and appreciate the art of these skills and professions and producing articles

To propagate the art forms by involving more of the youth by involving institutes that will be exposed to such profession and opportunities for them learn and carry on the skill

To identify the site which will be apt for benefiting the visitors and the metalsmiths Better working conditions and spaces for performing these art forms.

A gallery space to display the history and origins of unique cultural metal artworks and to exhibit new articles made to educate the locals and tourists

To understand the spatial linkages and anthropometry sensitively

To analyze the site with respect to its surroundings, climate, vegetation, and other factors affecting it.
