What Are Prescription Medications and How Can You Save On Drug Cost with EzRx Drug Discount Card A prescription medication is a pharmaceutical formulation that requires a prescription from a medical practitioner and must be filled by a pharmacy for dispensing to a patient. Prescriptions are often referred to as Rx’s which comes from the Latin word “recipe” which means “take”. When prescription medications are dispensed by a pharmacist they will often come with a patient information leaflet (PIL) or monogram that provides useful information to the doctor and patient about the drug and its potential side effects. Prescription medications, when taken as directed by a physician, can be beneficial in treating your symptoms and disease but if taken in higher doses or not as directed, they can become addictive, have adverse effects which can be life-threatening. Medications taken for pain, stimulants, and anti-depressants have a higher risk of addiction, so these must be taken as prescribed to avoid side effects. Prescription Medication Laws In the USA, the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetics Act define the substances that require a prescription to be dispensed by a licensed pharmacist. The Controlled Substances Act (CSA) regulates and controls the manufacturing, import, possession, use and distribution of drugs that have been divided into five Schedules with varying qualifications for each schedule. Some drugs may come with FDA’s (Food and Drug Administration) Black Box warning that informs doctors and patients about their potentially dangerous side effects. Prescription medication for depression – Citalopram For example, Citalopram (Brand Name: Celexa) is a perception drug that falls under the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) category of drugs. This medication is not a controlled substance. The prescription medication is used to treat depression. It is available as a prescription in the form of tablets and liquid drops that you can put in a drink of water. The medication usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to realize its benefits. Tiredness, dry mouth and sweating are common side effects of the drug. Tell your doctor if you have bleeding or blood clotting disorder, liver or kidney disease, seizures or epilepsy, or heart disease or heart failure. Do not take citalopram if you have used a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor (such as isocarboxazid rasagiline, linezolid) in the past two weeks, or if you also take pimozide or methylene blue injection.
