TENANTS RIGHTS UNDER

ILLINOIS LANDLORD TENANT LAW

This overview provides an introduction to the main aspects of the Illinois landlord tenant law.

Rent Increases Landlords are allowed to increase rent at any time, but must give the tenant at least 30 days' notice before the rent increase takes effect.

Late Fees Landlords are allowed to charge a late fee if the rent is not paid on time, but the late fee cannot be more than 10% of the rent.

Privacy Landlords are not allowed to enter the rental unit without giving the tenant at least 24 hours' notice. There are exceptions to this rule, such as in an emergency situation.

Discrimination Landlords cannot discriminate against tenants based on their race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, or disability.
