ebruary is a big month for reggae. Not only was the legend Bob Marley born this month, but it is also celebrated as Reggae and Black History Month in Jamaica. Bookophilia and Jamaicansmusic.com have partnered to host a free concert at the store this evening at 6:30pm.

The show is dubbed ‘Mic Check’ Open Mic and, as the name suggests, allows amateur performers to take to the stage and show off their skills in between the performances by the guest acts. The line-up for the show includes Conkarah, Ruth Royes and Zuri Marley. Poets and musicians are welcome to share their work, but the amateur performance spots will be administered on a first, come first served basis. Bookophilia is located at 92 Hope Road, Kingston 6. Birth name: Nicholas Murray DOB: January 31, 1985 Has performed in: Canada (Toronto, Niagara Falls), United Kingdom (London), United States (New York) Other passions: Film and cinematography

What has been one of your best weekends? This past weekend has been pretty intense. I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it. We went clubbing – different bars, all of my friends celebrating my birthday and stuff like that and wrapping it up with a nice beach flex; then, some of Mummy’s good home cooking on Sunday evening.

What are some of your favourite spots to eat, get a drink and/or chill out on the weekends? Devon House, CRU, Macau, East Japanese, Bikkles in Sovereign and New Leaf, then going to the beach and having fish there. Another place is Manhattan in New Kingston, they have a pool table and it’s just a nice, chill vibe, so I’ve been going quite frequently. My favourite place to chill out is my backyard. We have a little alcove, so a lot of my friends come over on the weekend to play games and hangout.

Where has your most memorable performance been? Perhaps New York; it was in October and I got to perform with Gentleman. We were performing on the same night and went there as a team. The lineup included myself, Gentleman and Richie Stephens and we all did a little performance. He endorsed me on stage and the crowd was really receptive. He gave my performance good feedback, so that made it a memorable experience.

Peplums are flattering for any figure because they define your waist and give the illusion of an hourglass shape.

Abandon the heavy jewellery for the night and add sparkle with sequined pants.

An olive green buttondown is a great way to introduce the military trend to your wardrobe.

Invest in a great pair of leather boots. They are durable and only get better with age.

kingston nightlife Now that the work week is over, it’s time to express yourself with some wknd style. These looks are great for the Kingston nightlife.
