The way filters generally determine if a site is “kosher” is via categories. Every website in the internet gets placed in a category which states the purpose it serves, for example: business, information, entertainment, etc. The filter is programed to know which categories are “kosher” and which ones are not, and blocks websites accordingly.

Obviously, a system like this can fail easily in both directions. Usually it’s too loose, and sometimes it’s too strict. Since the categories are made mechanically, they can sometimes be mistaken. Mostly because the robot always classifies the website by its main use which might be okay, even when a small portion of it may be harmful.

In short: NetFree works like a mega white list which gets built and continuously broadened according to customers’ requests. The way it works is as follows:

The client sends in a request to open a specific site. NetFree’s staff reviews it thoroughly. If it’s ascertained to be secure, the site is unblocked and goes onto the white list. Meaning, from that day on the site is open for every NetFree customer.

Due to our thousands of clients, a massive white list of more than a quarter million(!) sites awaits you, and it constantly gets even larger.

What happens when a site is determined to

be inappropriate?

For that, there is a black list. Sites which, after review, were found to be harmful, are not just impossible to open, they also go onto a black list. When a site is on the black list, they can’t be opened anymore by anyone. A user who clicks into that site will see a picture of a fire burning with the words: “badkeinu, uletzareinu hatochen batar zeh lo tov” -- We looked into in and unfortunately the content of this site is unacceptable.

Now, it must be mentioned that kashrus is NetFree’s highest priority, and we are not flexible in that respect. There is no option to make an exception for any reason to open a site on the black list. Furthermore, there is no option of temporarily shutting off the filter.

NetFree is a the only one of its kind in that respect. Other companies will sometimes, for urgent matters or whatever other reasons waive their principles and make an exception. NetFree will never do that. NetFree will try their utmost to filter and make it kosher, but when it’s not possible, the site will stay locked.

The rest of the sites on the internet which weren’t previously sent for examination are in a neutral-parve status. They can’t be opened, but a request to look review it and unblock it can be sent in.

Effecient: As previously mentioned, you don’t need to send in a list of sites which you are planning to use in the future. NetFree’s white list currently contains more than a quarter million sites, so the average customer rarely encounters new sites which weren’t previously reviewed.

Text: Additionally, NetFree has an automatic text filtering system. The system has a unique sensitivity which detects words, expressions and other content which is problematic for an ehrliche yid, and blocks it.

Google Search: NetFree is the only filter which can maneuver the Google search results. When you put in a search, NetFree will browse the results in a flash to see if the results themselves are problematic. This is all automated and takes just a millisecond. (Other filters only block the actual opening of a site, but all search results would show up).

Standards: NetFree enables every individual to make personal standards for themselves. You can program to block certain categories of sites, or make your own white list. You can also set specific hours during which you want the internet to be locked (for example, outside of work hours) and more.

PICTURES

REVOLUTIONARY FILTERING FOR PICTURES

Pictures are one of the biggest problems on the internet. Many filters invented a technology which recognizes people in pictures via skin-color detection, and then covers it with a different solid color. This is a very good system, but it’s not complete. Sometimes the technology fails to pick up inappropriate images, and in other instances the picture stays recognizable. Additionally, this system doesn’t usually work for graphic artists due to their frequent use of pictures of people which are not problematic. Another issue customers have with this system is that many objects in similar colors get mistaken for human skin color.

Effective: NetFree set up an entire staff of non-Jewish censors which are trained to know which types of pictures are not appropriate for a frum yid.

When a client opens a site, the pictures are automatically sent right over to the staff (meanwhile, all pictures are

seen as blurry). The censor goes through every picture, categorizing each picture as kosher or not. The user can follow along in real time as some pictures are opened while others get blocked.

A picture which has already been okayed, even by a different client, will be available right away and won’t need to be reviewed again.

(Please note: Understandably, pictures of women will never be allowed. This makes it nearly impossible to shop for women’s clothing with NetFree)

Productive: Besides for the benefit this provides to graphic artists, it also helps out regular customers, since covered pictures can hinder the ease of use when browsing a website. With NetFree’s system, you can calmly use every legitimate site along with all its legitimate pictures.
