Presidential Vision Dearest prospective applicant, My name is Hannes, and I was honoured to be invited to preside Esch 2018. I now invite you to explore my vision for the session, and hope that you’ll find yourself nodding along as you read it; if you find yourself doing just so, it’s a sure sign that you should take the opportunity to apply!

You’ll find that the questions do not have word limits, and are in general quite open. I want to stress that this not some form of trick to see if you can find the “correct answer” or anything of the like – we’re just genuinely interested in getting to know you and how you think about your work and the EYP in general. Just answer them in the way that suits you best, without over-thinking them! (Also a solid life tip!)

BREAKING FREE With the session theme of Breaking Free, the overarching vision for Esch 2018 focuses on all things personal – personal responsibility, personal ownership, and personal development.

All of the Officials will be encouraged to challenge conventions and to break free from any patterns or structures that have developed without clearly defined purpose. Purposeful and wellthought-out innovations will be encouraged and actively supported in their development throughout the project.

My end goal is to build a session with a clear purpose behind every action – and I believe that the only way to do so is by focusing on the individuals. When faced with an unexpected challenge, each Official should feel that they are confident, capable and supported enough to improvise, adapt, overcome.

Chairpersons Personal development As was briefly outlined already above, the session will emphasise the personal development aspect of EYP, which is also why we have a relatively large Board to work with a relatively small Chairs’ team – each Vice-President will be working closely with their three Chairs to provide needs-based support in any and all shapes.

To ensure that the Chairs’ needs are met, the Board will engage with them through needs analysis questionnaires, personal development plans, and Skype conversations to discuss key learning objectives and personal goals.

While at the session, the Vice-Presidents job will naturally be to thoroughly support their Chairs in all of their endeavours and ensure that they feel comfortable with all that they are doing. On average, each Chair should have at least an hour of Board presence in their room per day.

Topic clusters Each of the three Vice-Presidents are responsible for a topic cluster, which is a form of meta-topic. These topic clusters will function both as academic hubs for similar topics, and as the support networks–buddygroups–of the Chairs’ team. My vision for the topic clusters would see them integrated as a key element of the session, with everything from academic preparation to Committee Work and in formal activities taking place within the topic clusters.

This is to allow the delegates to view their work more holistically, to open up for opportunities of interaction between the Committees, increase the overall educational value of the session, and to allow for more natural contact with other session participants.

The topic clusters have already been chosen by the Vice-Presidents to ensure that they have the passion and the knowledge necessary to best support you as you write your topic overview, and later work with the delegates in due time.

While the process of drafting the topics is by now underway, suggestions from successful applicants will be heavily taken into consideration as we finalise the process, as our chief objective is to ensure that the delegates and you as Chairs will find the topics interesting and engaging! I’ll leave it to the VicePresidents to introduce themselves and their topic clusters briefly:

Alinda Ohotski - Security: Hello! I am Alinda and I am ecstatic to be one of the Vice-Presidents on the Esch 2018 team. I am currently in my final year of my undergraduate law studies in London. I have been involved in EYP for four years and joining this organisation has been the best decision I made in my life. My EYP experience has been one of “breaking free”. Breaking free of self-constraints, breaking free of conformity, focusing on self-development and contributing to the development of others. I am confident that Esch 2018 will be an excellent opportunity for you to break free as well!

I will be responsible for the “Security” cluster during the session. This cluster will deal with various security issues the EU has been facing in recent years.

Given the recent developments, the cluster would encompass issues such as terrorism, organised crime, and cyber-crime. Considering terrorism, your topic may deal with how the EU should strengthen its cooperation on counterterrorism; considering cyber-crime, you may choose to ask what strategy the EU should pursue during its development of cyber-security measures on the block chain. But if you have a topic idea that pops up in your mind and relates to this cluster, you have the opportunity to propose it as a Committee topic! So, if you like the challenge of chairing topics tha tare rather technical and intellectually stimulating topics, this may be the right cluster for you.

Giedré Birmontaité - Strategic development of the EU Hey there! Thanks for taking the time to get to this point of the booklet! Before diving into the cluster that I will be working on during Esch, here is a bit about me: My name is Giedré, I originally come from Vilnius, Lithuania and currently live in Exeter, United Kingdom where I am finishing my degree in Economics this year. Before going into corporate banking, strategy consulting or whoknows-what-job, I hope to spend my summer after graduation volunteering in a land far away from here, teaching kids English and showing them the energisers that we so love in EYP. I am very excited by the concept of topic clusters in Esch and can’t wait to see what we can make of it, so let’s get to it! Sometimes it is important to take a step back and to look at the bigger picture. And it is exactly what we will do. Looking beyond tomorrow, this week, the year ahead, what is the world that you would want your kids to live in?Letting ourselves dream of a better world and taking strategic, thought-through measures to get there, the cluster will deal with the fundamental issues of Europe today and will shape the world of tomorrow. It will be up to the chairs to decide what area to focus on, but as an example, the topics could deal with the idea of a constitutional reform of the EU into the United States of Europe; rethink the relations with our closest allies such as the United States or possible closer cooperation with countries such as China; look in to the future of the development of our cities; examine the role of the EU as a world-leader of environmental standards, etc.

The chairs in the cluster will work closely from the start of the academic preparation to the final moments of the session. You will be given a platform to bounce off the ideas of each other, share knowledge, support each other during the topic overview writing process and think together of how you can approach these broad issues in an effective manner. Thus, you will be involved not only in your topic but also will contribute to the other two!

Rebeca Leal - Technology and innovation: My name is Rebeca Leal. I come from sunny Portugal, and I am currently doing my Masters in Project Management here. I've been doing EYP for a few years now and Luxembourg is the first country that I will have the pleasure of going to a second time for a session. I am truly looking forward to working with this amazing team there and cannot wait to get to know all the other members that will join us in making this session memorable!

As a Software Engineering Bachelor, I have grown deeply interested in the technological evolution and its future. Therefore, it will be my pleasure to manage the cluster on "Technology and innovation" during Esch 2018!In this group we will explore the impact technology has had on our lives, its advantages, and disadvantages and how it might affect our future. We will also discuss in what ways can we take the best from these tools and how to prevent their less pleasant consequences. If this sounds like something you would be interested in working on then don't let this chance pass, and join us in Esch!

Editorial Vision Hi there! My name is Solène, and I will be editing Esch 2018. You can find below my thoughts about the session and the team but read this first. Each session is unique, and each participant will experience it differently. However, I believe in the power of the Media Team to act as a glue between all these people and to help shape an event we can all remember with fondness. With heart and effort, the impact our output can have on people is beyond words–this is why we will not work on articles only but with visual medium as well and, often forgotten but nonetheless important, interactive projects involving participants and pushing the creative limits of the Media Team. If this is something you can get behind, the call is open, keep on reading!

The Team The Media Team is, ultimately, a window into the session as it was perceived by the participants. The team will work around the session’s theme of Breaking Free with total creative freedom, not limiting itself to the classic media but rather experiencing with other forms of expression. Without following the classic structure of Journalists allocated to committees, they will rather work alongside the academic clusters of the Chairsteam. This will not only make for a freer and more mobile team but will also facilitate the academic participation of the Media Team. The extended Editorial Team, comprising a Video Editor and an Editorial Assistant, will ensure full support for all team members. Presession work will play an essential role in the preparation for the session and allow everyone to have their needs met, both in terms of technical learning and personal development goals. The environment of the Media Team is the one most suitable for explorations, and we will take full advantage of this!

Video Editor and Editorial Assistant Your role, alongside me, will be to support the Journalists in their work and to contribute to the output, ensuring that it is of high quality and relevant to the participants. The Video Editor will undertake the video production of the Media Team, as well as supervise the original video projects conducted by the Journalists. Solid technical skills are recommended, along with a will to teach and learn. The Editorial Assistant will help support the photographic output and participate in the supervision of the academic work conducted by the Media Team. Similarly, a strong knowledge in photography and past experiences are recommended. Overall, motivation and a will to challenge yourselves as well as others is what is really important to create a solid Editorial Team.

Journalists As I believe in learning by experience, my aim is to give the Journalists ownership of their work. The Media Team’s goal will not only be an aesthetic one; we will go out there, challenge ourselves and others to help shape the session. I am looking for Journalists who are curious to expand their skill-set and experience media fields that they are not familiar with.

Motivation and open-mindedness are keys, and a tendency to have an innovative approach are highly encouraged. If there is something that you have always wanted to do but never dared, now is the time!

Past experience with media, be it in photography, videography, radio or otherwise, is encouraged but not mandatory. What is important is rather a real motivation and a will to go beyond what is taken for granted in a media team, explore the unknown, and rethink the boundaries that we impose on ourselves.
