Shape of things to come? A
century ago, in 1914, Eynsham was comfortably contained in a cluster of mediaeval streets – the darkest area shown on the map. How things change! The village expanded north and west after World War II, most spectacularly in the decade 1961–71, when the population almost doubled to 4427. Rounding off and infill has created the shape we know today, embracing 4648 souls in around 2000 houses at last census (2011) – though protests certainly happened along the way. Does the county need more housing at the scale suggested now? And even if it does, why build so much of it on our doorstep? That’s a starting point for some of us (page 2), while others are exploring potential benefits from this alternative future (pages 3, 11) and some are doing both (page 13). You’ll find almost every angle within this issue. We’d be interested in your thoughts. 1
