People Patricia Leopold – who is quite coincidentally the Secretary to Bartholomew Players – received an MBE for services to higher education in the Queen’s Birthday honours list.
Hats off to BikeSafe supporters Bram Hauer, Maarten van Hardenbroek and Steve Harrington from Eynsham who completed the London Nightride on 6-7 June for the B4044 Community Path Campaign – and thanks to everyone who sponsored them to make it all worth while. Cheers to the Saunders family, whose Shirt Race entry brought a whole new meaning to the Nut Award on the 40th anniversary of Evenlode DIY – photo © Ian White
Warmest congratulations to Cub Scout Leader Rose Green – seen here with County Commissioner Phil Earl and UK Deputy Chief Commissioner Tim Kidd, whose twin brother lives in Eynsham as it happens. She received her Chief Scout’s 40 years’ length of service award at the County Awards Day on 9 May at Youlbury Scout Activity Centre – only two years overdue. Thanks to Richard Sonley for the photo.

Prof Margaret Marker died in Northumberland on 12 June, age 83. She had lived in retirement in Wytham View and was active in the Eynsham Society, where her geographical knowledge was much appreciated; and also at St Peter’s – having joined the Catholic Church in South Africa on account, as she said, of its witness there. She was the first woman to become a professor and head of department at the University of Fort Hare, the oldest black university in South Africa, which educated many of its leaders including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nelson Mandela. Margaret’s fearless advocacy of black higher education was recognised by the award of a medal. John Dowling
