Celebrating 17 Years Dear Showhouse Sponsors, Guests, and Friends As Chair of WBCS I continue to be overwhelmed and inspired by the generosity that makes our organization and its partnership with the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center possible. Since 1998, because of you, the Showhouse’s sponsors, guests, and friends as well as the more than 1,000 volunteers, WBCS has provided more than $5.1 million in early-stage breast cancer and prostate cancer research funding, which has paved the way for an additional $37.6 million in extra-mural support to WBCS researchers. Providing such philanthropic dollars in an era of sharply declining federal funding would be impossible without your sustained support, commitment, and enthusiasm to fund a cure. Your tour of the 17th annual Showhouse for a Cure helps us continue this important work.

You will not be disappointed by the 2014 Showhouse. Our innovative and stylish designers continue to impress. They have worked tirelessly to transform and appoint this year’s lovely historic home generously donated by Randy Bryant and Cecelia Gore. Thank you for joining us for this year’s Showhouse for a Cure, which is the culmination of the time, talent, and resources of so many. Best Regards, Kadie M. Jelenchick, WBCS Chair of the Board

2014 Showhouse Dedication So smart, so beautiful, so gentle in her ways, and always sporting a million dollar smile—that’s how everyone perceived Christine “Christy” Hamilton Foote, who lost her long battle to breast cancer on February 5, 2014. Sadly, her death is an unwelcome reminder that despite advances in breast cancer research and the best of clinical care, cures remain elusive for far too many struck by this disease. Her husband Robert T. Foote, Jr. recently observed, “Christy’s warm and generous spirit captured everyone who knew her. Her valiant courage in the face of terrible odds never deterred her from fighting for the survival for others.” Born on March 12, 1950, Christy’s educational and career accomplishments were many. She was a graduate of Smith College with a double major in economics and art history. In 1983, she earned her masters degree from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Christy’s career in international banking began after college in 1972, which led her to positions in Brussels, Paris, and Chicago and even, for a short stint, in Athens. In 1992, Christy married the love of her life, Rob, and moved from Chicago to Chenequa, inheriting a stepdaughter, Laura, and stepson, Robert III, who both became an important part of her life. Christy’s mother, Jacqueline Macomber, resides in Fox Point. Rob and Christy traveled the world often and extensively, with and without friends. Stories of their many encounters are legendary. Chicago’s loss was Milwaukee’s gain, as she returned to a community where she had many lifelong friends. Christy’s diagnosis in 1998 gave her compelling personal reasons to become an effective fundraiser and research activist fighting cancer. Nance Kinney, Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse founder and herself a then recent survivor, recruited Christy to found the Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse, Inc.’s Tee Up for a Cure in 1999. Christy remained active in the outing until her death. Now in its sixteenth year, the event has raised an estimated $1 million for research. As an early WBCS volunteer, Christy became a board member and was active on the WBCS Scientific Review Committee,

chairing the group for a period of time. She also served as an ABCD (After Breast Cancer Diagnosis) mentor, counseling other patients fighting what she called “this stealthy disease.” Appointed to the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center’s board of directors, she continued serving as an ambassador, activist and supporter for the Center until she died. Her other community interests were wide ranging and included board membership in the Wisconsin Humane Society, the Fine Arts Society of the Milwaukee Art Museum, Colonial Dames, and the Green Tree Garden Club. She was also active on the Women’s Board of the prestigious Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. Christy’s was a life well-lived. An inspiration to all those who watched her face down cancer, she was a true warrior against the havoc it brings. She never gave up hope for a future without cancer. In Christy’s own words, “All of the money raised supports the many fine scientists and physicians working to find cures for this stealthy disease. The full impact of donors’ support cannot be measured in dollars or years, but the day will come when breast cancer will no longer confound the experts, and we will have a cure.” The WBCS board of directors has established The Christy Foote Fighter Award in memory of Christy, who fought breast cancer with grace, dignity and a “never-give-up attitude.” The award will be given annually at the WBCS preview party gala to an individual or organization that tirelessly fights to find a cure for breast cancer or prostate cancer, with the inaugural award presented at the 2014 preview gala. The Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse is privileged to dedicate its 17th annual Showhouse for a Cure to a brave and beautiful woman, Christine Hamilton Foote.

2014 WBCS Scientific Review Research for a Cure mental data required to apply to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) for a Program Project Grant (PPG), as well as for individual grants to further expand their breast cancer research. Dr. Williams reports that WBCS support enabled project researchers to submit two new Research Project (R01) grant applications of over $1.2 million each to the NCI in 2013. Additional NCI applications from the group are expected to be submitted in 2014. Several new MCW breast cancer researchers will join the group planning the PPG application. This will expand the collaborative network of MCW researchers who are working together to develop better treatments for breast cancer. The WBCS Scientific Review Committee (SRC) meets annually to review grant proposals and recommend approval and funding by the WBCS board of directors. A founding SRC member, medical oncologist Howard Dubner, MD, has concluded his meritorious service to WBCS, as his clinical practice has moved away from treating breast cancer patients. We are grateful for Dr. Dubner’s long commitment to the WBCS mission. The SRC has appointed a new member, Mark W. Bosbous, MD, who treats breast cancer patients at St. Joseph’s Hospital in West Bend. An MCW graduate, he completed a six-year MCW Plastic Surgery residency and a year’s prestigious advanced fellowship in Grand Rapids, Michigan, before joining the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Dr. Bosbous brings the necessary research and clinical experience to help guide the SRC’s deliberations. In addition, Ravi Misra, PhD, Dean of the Graduate School, now provides peer scientist expertise to the committee, replacing Robert Truitt, PhD, who has retired. We welcome and appreciate his service in support of our efforts. The purpose of the SRC, in partnership with the MCW Cancer Center, is to provide oversight and focus to the allocation of WBCS, Inc. funds provided by the annual Showhouse for a Cure and its supporting events.

WBCS, Inc. crossed an important threshold in 2013. Its latest gift of $350,000 to the MCW Cancer Center brings its cumulative research investment to over $5.1 million. Cancer Center Director, Ming You, MD, PhD, sums up the impact of WBCS support in this way: As one of the MCW Cancer Center’s largest donors, WBCS makes a remarkable impact on cancer research that is both immediate and exponential. Pilot grant awards funded by WBCS are transformative to MCW cancer researchers, supporting the growth of our most innovative and committed faculty and building the next generation of nationally recognized cancer researchers and physician scientists. Over the years, this gift of $5.1 million dollars has resulted in WBCS-funded investigators receiving $37.6 million in external research funding. With these amazing results, the impact of WBCS to the MCW Cancer Center, and to cancer patients and the community, cannot be overstated.

The Center uses WBCS awards as seed grants to help researchers develop the substantive data to apply for competitive external research funding. This is a time of extreme federal budget cuts and except for “only rare exceptions,” the current federal payline for Traditional (R0l) and Exploratory Development (R21) applications is at the ninth percentile. In other words, nationally, 91 percent of competitive applications go unfunded. Other countries are stepping up government support of medical research, and we are losing talented researchers who are unable to get worthy research funded in the United States. The importance of philanthropy to bolster research at an early stage is incontrovertible. It mitigates the impact of the alarming decrease in support from the National Institutes of Health, not only for young investigators, but, increasingly for senior researchers who face similar challenges to advancing their research into the clinical trials that bring new discoveries from the bench to the bedside. Fortunately, the generous community support of WBCS is making a difference in Wisconsin. This year, three researchers were awarded WBCS grants of $100,000 over a two-year period. To ensure the best use of scarce funding, a competitive annual review of each researcher’s progress will determine whether the second year’s award will be given. In addition, one of last year’s $50,000 awardees, Robert Miao, PhD, received an additional $50,000 held in reserve in 2013 for the proposal showing the most progress and promise. Finally, the remaining 2014 amount of $50,000 was allocated to the WBCS Breast Cancer Research Professorship fund. The original 2011 pledge of $1 million is close to completion. Carol Williams, PhD, has provided an update on the 2012 WBCS $100,000 Large Center Grant in Breast Cancer Research. This award supports a group of Cancer Center scientists and clinician scientists who are sharing innovative ideas and novel techniques to develop new ways to halt the growth of breast tumors and inhibit metastasis. WBCS support is allowing these researchers to gather the experi-

2014 Independent Seed Grants Weiguo Cui, PhD

Associate Investigator, Blood Research Institute. Blood Center of Wisconsin Research Title: “Harnessing Dual-Specific T Cells in Breast Cancer Immunotherapy” Breast cancer with distal metastasis is often refractory to standard treatments. Innovative approaches, such as immunotherapy, are needed to ensure the complete and durable regressions of this disease. Owing to the remarkable success of genetically engineered T cell therapy in hematological malignancy, adoptive cell transfer based immunotherapies are gaining momentum. However, such an approach shows much curtailed anti-tumor effects when it targets breast cancer associated antigens. This proposal seeks to develop an innovative approach that 1) overcomes immunosuppression that often accompanies this type of therapy; 2) recruits robust anti-tumor T cell responses to the very site of a tumor. In combination with other existing therapeutic modalities, the novel approach proposed here is expected to provide great insights into therapeutic designs targeting a wide range of malignancies.

Howard J. Jacob, PhD

Warren P. Knowles Chair of Genetics Professor, Department of Physiology. Medical College of Wisconsin Research Title: “Mapping Genetic Risks of Breast Cancer in the Tumor Microenvironment” Breast cancer is highly heritable, yet the majority of causative risk variants remain unknown. Of the characterized risk variants, most are considered to be directly associated with the tumor cell. Far less emphasis has been placed on genetic variants that might impact risk by affecting the local environment of the tumor, the so-called “tumor microenvironment.” To address this issue we have developed powerful rat genetic models which will allow us to genetically map breast cancer risk in the tumor microenvironment. Successful execution of the experiments proposed in this application will allow us to precisely understand the role and contribution of specific host mutations in creating a permissive environment for breast tumor cell growth and progression.

Vera Tarakanova, PhD

Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics Medical College of Wisconsin Research Title: “Regulation of Innate Immune Responses by Breast Cancer Therapy” Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are cellular enzymes that drive the development and metastasis of several types of cancers, most prominently breast cancer and prostate cancer. Not surprisingly, HDAC inhibitors that are already approved for certain blood cancers are currently undergoing clinical trials for the treatment of breast cancer. Long-term administration of HDAC inhibitors was recently linked to the development of secondary, virus-driven cancer in several published clinical case reports, threatening the use of HDAC inhibitors in breast cancer and prostate cancer patients. Importantly, the mechanism of this unintended side effect remains unclear. We have recently discovered an unanticipated connection between HDACs and antiviral immune responses. Specifically, we have shown that HDACs are required in order to initiate and sustain innate immune responses against diverse microbial agents. Importantly, disruption of this HDAC-immune connection by HDAC inhibitors could lead to virus-driven secondary cancer in patients, a hypothesis we plan to test in future, federally-funded studies. In this application, we propose to define how the HDAC-innate immunity connection works at the molecular level and apply this knowledge to the animal model of chronic infection with a cancer associated virus. The results of the proposed studies will lead to increased safety and effectiveness of HDAC inhibitors, a promising new therapy for breast cancer.

Supplemental Award to One 2013 Seed Grant Recipient

Qing (Robert) Miao, PhD

Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatric Surgery. Medical College of Wisconsin Research Title: “Roles of Nogo-B Receptor (NgBR) in Breast Cancer Initiation and Progression” The purpose of the initial proposal was to determine if Nogo-B Receptor (NgBR) is a new therapeutic target for breast cancer. The growth of a tumor from a single, genetically altered cell is a stepwise progression, including hyperplasia, dysplasia, carcinoma in situ and cancer. A major goal of the proposal was to determine the role of NgBR in breast cancer initiation and stepwise progression. Findings from the first year of research using in vitro approaches have confirmed the initial hypothesis that NgBR-mediated Ras recruitment is critical for activating Ras oncogene signaling and cell transformation. Ras is a key signaling molecule and its recruitment is a critical early step in breast cancer progression. These studies support the novel hypothesis that the NgBR is a potential target for blocking tumorigenesis. Successful execution of the supplemental studies will go a long way towards validating new targets for directed therapy in the treatment of ER positive breast cancer.

Celebrating 17 Years

Hope Has a Home The 2014 Wisconsin Showhouse for a Cure By Kay Brogelman One of the most magnificent and recognizable homes in Milwaukee, the Fitzgerald-Herzfeld Mansion, was designed to be a masterpiece. William E. Fitzgerald was the son of a Great Lakes sea captain and later the president of Milwaukee Dry Dock Company. He and his wife, Jesse, chose the crest of East Lafayette Hill Road at 2022 East Lafayette Place as the site for their home. The couple chose Ferry and Clas, a prestigious architectural firm to design their threestory, 6,158-square-foot Classical Revival Georgian home. With four bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms, five fireplaces and at a cost of $15,000, construction of the home began in 1901. However, after completion of the foundation of the home, Mr. Fitzgerald met an untimely death in 1902, leaving behind his widow and two young sons, Edmund and William. While the Fitzgerald’s time at this property near the shores of Lake Michigan had ended, their story and nautical ties did not. Jesse Fitzgerald raised her sons and both went off to college. Edmund, returned to Milwaukee and became President and Chairman of the Board of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. As an investment, Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. commissioned a ship to be built, The Edmund Fitzgerald, to honor Mr. Fitzgerald and his family’s heritage. She sailed the Great Lakes for 17 years until her catastrophic end in a storm on Lake Superior on November 19, 1975, forever immortalized in Gordon Lightfoot’s song, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. After William Fitzgerald’s death, the unfinished structure was dismantled and the remaining foundation and lot were sold to Mrs. M.A. Reinhardt. Mrs. Reinhardt used the original Ferry and Clas architectural drawings for the reconstruction and it was rebuilt with the addition of a coach house and stable at a cost of $4,500. The home features a façade of red brick laid Flemish bond with white marble steps leading to the doorway. The original columned porch, with an open-air porch above, existed only across the entryway. Tall, twin chimney stacks flank the roof while a terracotta belt course divides the second and third levels and frames the entire home under the cornice. The double-hung windows, crowned by flared, flat brick lintels, are accented with decorative keystones. White marble was used for trim on the exterior windows and doors. A widow’s walk was constructed atop the roof. They were often found on homes in New England Coastal towns to serve as a lookout for incoming ships, appropriate for the seafaring Fitzgerald family. The exterior entrance on the east side of the building was constructed in 1940 and features a carved marble bas relief crowned with a semi-circular door canopy. Old-world craftsmanship, warmth and character can be found throughout the interior. The inviting vestibule features a floor of encaustic tile specifically shipped to Milwaukee from a monastery in Brussels, Belgium. The massive foyer is lined with rich, quarter sawn oak paneling and displays a coffered, barrel-vaulted ceiling. The living room, wrapped in five-foot paneled walnut wainscoting, contains a walnut framed fireplace surrounded by green marble. The dining room’s ten and one-half foot ceiling emphasizes the elaborate French mahogany fireplace with its unique ornamentation and style. The gourmet kitchen is a state-of-the-art update, 2014 Showhouse

designed by the current owner. Paneled pocket doors of walnut, oak or mahogany, all with brass hardware, separate the main rooms. Early Kohler Company gold-plated brass fixtures can be found in the bathrooms. The oak staircase and wood paneling was recovered from Frederick and Ida Pabst’s mansion, Woodbine, on Oconomowoc Lake and reassembled in the home. The old growth oak lumber was retrieved from Lake Superior to match the tight grain of the original 1900’s interior. The staircase leads to a library, sunroom and two bedrooms. The fanciful, romantic design of the library ceiling, floor, trim and fireplace was the creation of artists/ painters Rolf Herzog and JoAnn Binder of Milwaukee. The sunroom features a warm, ceramic floor, ceiling-to-floor windows, and sidelights. The master bedroom’s marble fireplace is warm and inviting. The third floor features a large ballroom and two smaller rooms, the rear room originally a servant’s quarter. There are two bathrooms on the third floor, one adjacent to the ballroom is equipped with a functional water closet. The plaster lunettes above each ballroom window show a classical design of urns and laurels and the fireplace is topped by a plaque of playful putties and sconces. The spiral staircase to the rooftop terrace is accessed via a ship-type hatch. In 1906, the property and newly constructed home, coach house, and stable were sold to Carl and Helena Phillipson Herzfeld. Carl Herzfeld married Helena Phillipson, sister of his business partner Richard Phillipson, and together, Carl and Richard established the Herzfeld-Phillipson Corp. Along with the Stone brothers of Chicago, they bought Boston Store located on 4th Street and Grand Avenue. The store offered multi vendors selling a variety of goods under one roof, a concept first popularized by a Massachusetts retailer. As head of the Air Service Committee of the Association of Commerce, Mr. Herzfeld aided in developing air travel in and out of Milwaukee, including the first air shipment of goods into Wisconsin. Along with his business acumen, Mr. Herzfeld was equally known for his contributions toward the relief of the unfortunate and needy. Mrs. Herzfeld was a long-time supporter of the arts and education. Together Carl and Helena raised two sons, Richard and Hans (John), both of whom became executives at Boston Store. The Herzfeld’s legacy of philanthropy has been carried out to the present in the Richard and Ethel Herzfeld Foundation. The Herzfelds enjoyed the home for twenty years until famed Milwaukee architect Alexander Eschweiler and his wife, Maria, became the next owners in 1926. As a designer of many homes for the prominent and wealthy in the area, Mr. Eschweiler found this Ferry and Clas home to be much to his liking. In 1937, the Eschweilers moved to their summer home on North Lake. The interior was then redesigned by the Eschweiler and Eschweiler architectural firm as a two-apartment duplex. After Mr. Eschweiler’s death in 1940, the home was purchased by Wisconsin Realty Co. serving as a high-end income property for 36 years. As tenants, Robert W. Baird and Karem Abdul-Jabbar, and many others, have all called it home. During this time, the urban renewal march was in full swing along Prospect Avenue. It might have invaded E. Lafayette Place

had it not been for a dedicated group of East Side residents objecting to Lafayette Place becoming a site for a high-rise and the needed variances for demolition were denied. In 1976, ownership of the the coach house and stable was separated from the home and sold as two separate parcels with a new address on Windsor Street. William and Gillian Wigdale purchased the home in 1979 and invested heavily in making much needed renovations and repairs. They created a terrace on the roof and installed a spiral staircase for access. The home changed ownership again in 1999 when John and Patti Ogden purchased the home. Their family spent many hours enjoying the unblemished view of the lakefront and harbor from the rooftop terrace. They used the lower level unit as income property. In 2003, the home was sold to the current owner, Randy Bryant, who was born and raised in Milwaukee. Bryant married Cecilia Gore, also a Milwaukee native, in 2009. Ms. Gore is currently the Executive Director of the Brewers Community Foundation. Mr. Bryant is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Ten Chimneys Foundation in Genesee Depot. Gore and Bryant are also active members in the community. Upon purchasing the home, Bryant set about to restore the home to its formal elegance along with adding modern conveniences. After many months of research for historical and architectural accuracy, along with a substantial financial commitment, he began a major restoration of the home which included a state-of–the-art, custom designed kitchen. The white marble used in repairing the entryway steps, the vestibule’s encaustic tile floor, the recovered and reinstalled staircase and paneling, uncovering the dining room fireplace, and many other improvements are all restorative projects painstakingly undertaken by the current owners. It is again a magnificent single family dwelling, transformed into an up-to-the minute, nouveau-styled showhouse befitting its gracious, old-world charm.

Sanctuary Defined

Majestic views of Lake Michigan and a flood of natural light bathing the sunroom in quiet solitude were the inspiration for designers Cathy Williams and Michael Carter to create a place of peace and relaxation. A space that is refined, quiet and restful. Greiges, soft yellows, browns and golds ground the room in a quiet sophistication, while mirrored surfaces add a touch of glam. We invite you to visit any of our talented designers and discover the look and feel you’ve always wanted for your home.
