Celebrating 16 Years Dear Showhouse Sponsors, Guests and Friends: Let me be the first to welcome you to the 2013 Showhouse for a Cure, which I am lucky enough to call “home”. As both this year’s homeowner and Chair of WBCS, I am awestruck and inspired by what has gone into the making of the 16th Annual Showhouse. WBCS cannot thank enough the wonderful designers, who, as always, have worked tirelessly to transform The Castle on Newberry. Their partnership is critical to WBCS’ success. WBCS would also like to thank our presenting sponsor, Northwestern Mutual Foundation, for its sustained support and commitment, who along with the many other generous donors who are recognized throughout this program, energize the thousands of volunteers whose selfless donation of time, talent and resources make WBCS and our events possible. WBCS would also like to extend a very special thank you to John Kimpel, our friend and resident photographer, as well as Exclusively Yours Magazine for its continued design and production assistance with the Showhouse program book.

It is the continued generosity and enthusiasm that has resulted in more than $4.75 million in contributions to early-stage breast cancer and prostate cancer research at the Medical College of Wisconsin. This year, with the help of you, the Showhouse’s sponsors, guests and friends, we will surpass the $5 million mark, which allows WBCS to continue its mission to support promising, muchneeded research. Thank you for touring this year’s Showhouse and for being part of WBCS’ efforts to fund a cure. Best regards, Kadie M. Jelenchick 2013 Homeowner and Chair of WBCS Board of Directors

2013 Showhouse Dedication Just before Thanksgiving 2012, Ann Butler Nattinger, MD, MPH, Lady Riders Professor of Breast Cancer Research, Professor of Medicine and Chief of General Internal Medicine at The Medical College of Wisconsin, was diagnosed with breast cancer—which begs the question: Who heals the healer? Dr. Nattinger did not have to reach very far to seek treatment. She turned to fellow clinicians at Froedtert and The Medical College of Wisconsin Clinics for her care. Husband Bruce and their three offspring, Kevin, Kinsey and Michael, find themselves on a journey with her that many families have experienced following a diagnosis of cancer. There are days of empowerment and days of concern; but, ultimately research and advanced treatment options bring hope. Dr. Nattinger’s many years of counseling patients to survival now has an added personal dimension. In Dr. Nattinger’s words, “Although I wouldn’t wish breast cancer on anyone, there are some silver linings to having had this experience. One is that personally experiencing illness gives me a valuable perspective on what my patients go through and what is needed from our system of care.” Since joining The Medical College of Wisconsin faculty in 1988, Dr. Nattinger has published several landmark studies of factors involved in the choice of treatment options by breast cancer patients – contributions that have led to changes in health policy. Her research has included evaluating the quality of surveillance care for breast cancer survivors and developing strategies physicians can use to improve the use of screening mammography by their patients. A nationally recognized cancer health services researcher, Dr. Nattinger’s extensive research work includes studying treatment of breast cancer patients,

therapy treatment options, physician communication with patients, and the development and use of videotapes for aiding patients in medical decision making. She is experienced in studying disparities in care, geographic variations in treatment, quality of life issues, the effect of health policy at the legislative level on the treatment patients will seek, and research methodology. In 2012, The American College of Physicians (ACP) honored her for her extraordinary leadership and excellence in the areas of cancer research and women’s health. During its annual convocation ceremony, the ACP advanced Dr. Nattinger to the level of “Master,” the highest designation given by the organization. ACP Masters are elected “on account of personal character, positions of honor, eminence in practice or in medical research, or other attainments in science or in the art of medicine.” Since first awarded in 1923, only nineteen physicians in the entire state of Wisconsin have been designated as ACP Masters. Dr. Nattinger is the second woman ever in Wisconsin, and the first in thirty-eight years, to be recognized as an ACP Master. Dr. Nattinger has committed her life’s work and made a significant difference in the research, treatment and outcomes for breast cancer patients. WBCS, Inc. is honored to dedicate its sixteenth annual Showhouse for a Cure to Ann Butler Nattinger, as we walk with her on her personal journey to survival. Ann Butler Nattinger, MD, MPH

2013 WBCS Scientific Review Research for a Cure With its 2012 donation of $350,000, WBCS, Inc. increased its investment in breast cancer and prostate cancer research to a cumulative donation of over $4.75 million. Researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center use WBCS research awards as seed grants to develop the data required to apply for larger National Institutes of Health and National Cancer Institute grants. Currently, less than 8% of approved federal grants receive funding. Philanthropy increasingly is shouldering the burden of funding research not only for early-stage research, but also for more mature projects, as the competition for scarce federal research dollars increases. In 2011, WBCS, Inc. pledged $1 million to establish the WBCS Breast Cancer Research Professorship at the Cancer Center. The Professor’s research will be conducted in the WBCS Breast Cancer Research Laboratory at the College. The Medical College will recruit a nationally renowned researcher to fill the position. WBCS anticipates the Professorship will be fully funded in 2014. WBCS has pledged to continue to fund up to $300,000 annually for research. Each of the 2013 Independent Seed Grant Awardees has received a one-year, $50,000 award. An additional meritorious $50,000 award has been reserved for a second year for the 2013 seed grant that is determined to have the greatest research impact of the three awards. In addition, Carol Williams, PhD, has reported on the progress that has been made on the 2012 WBCS Large Center Grant in Breast Cancer Research awarded last year. The purpose of the study is to develop new approaches to halt the growth of primary breast tumors before metastasis occurs and to improve methods to slow metastasis and reverse the growth of secondary tumors. The overall goal of the project is to develop treatments that diminish breast cancer metastasis. The collaborative efforts and robust exchange of innovative research and ideas fostered by the $100,000 grant has positioned the awardees to apply for a Program Project Grant, as well as for individual researchers in the group to apply for grants to further their specific

MCW Cancer Center Development Staff

research goals. The group’s research is ongoing, and its progress will be updated at the 2014 Scientific Review Committee meeting. The WBCS Scientific Review Committee (SRC) meets annually to review grant proposals and recommend approval and funding by the WBCS board of directors. Two SRC members retired from the committee in 2012 and deserve special mention and gratitude for their long standing commitment to the WBCS mission: Lyle Henry, MD, FACS, and Owen Griffith, PhD. The SRC welcomes Alysandra Lal, MD, MPH to the committee. The purpose of the Scientific Review Committee, in partnership with the MCW Cancer Center, is to provide oversight and focus for the funds allocated by WBCS to early-stage research from the annual Showhouse for a Cure and its supporting events.

Hope has a Home WBCS funding provides more opportunities for us to do research, and it helps stimulate interest in breast cancer research. WBCS could choose to solicit proposals nationally, as some organizations do, but the fact that they target funding here means a lot to scientists at MCW. –Haris Vikis, PhD

2013 Independent Seed Grants Haris Vikis, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology, Medical College of Wisconsin Breast cancer frequently spreads to the lungs. Patients with tumor that has spread have a very poor clinical outlook. Treatment options rarely result in a cure. Therefore, a better understanding of what controls the spread of breast cancer is key to developing effective therapies. Successful completion of our studies will ultimately result in better design of therapies that harness the tumor cell-killing capacity of neutrophils. Research Title: “Evaluation of myeloperoxidase in mediating the anti-metastatic effects of neutrophils in breast cancer”

Qing (Robert) Miao, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatric Surgery, Medical College of Wisconsin The purpose of this study is to determine if Nogo-B receptor (NgBR) is a new therapeutic target for breast cancer. The growth of a tumor from a single, genetically altered cell is a stepwise progression, including hyperplasia, dysplasia, carcinoma in situ and cancer. The goal of this proposal is to determine the roles of NgBR in breast cancer initiation and stepwise progression. In human breast cancer cells there is a protein called HER2 that is one of four Epidermal Growth Factor receptors. Researchers identified HER2 as a target because levels of HER2 are commonly increased up to 100-fold in invasive breast cancer, and signaling pathways promote the growth and survival of breast cancer cells even when a patient undergoes chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. Findings from my research should reveal new insights into how NgBR plays a central role in a breast cancer cell’s ability to grow, gain the motility and invade to other organs. If this is the case, then new treatments can be designed to target NgBR to improve the efficacy of breast cancer therapy. Research Title: “Roles of Nogo-B receptor (NgBR) in breast cancer initiation and progression”

Yan-Qing Ma, PhD, Associate Investigator, Blood Research Institute, Blood Center of Wisconsin Breast cancer is one of the most commonly occurring malignancies in women, and distant metastasis is responsible for most breast cancer mortality. Kindlins have been recently identified as a novel family of integrin activators. Significantly, kindlin-2, one of the kindlin family members, is highly expressed in aggressive breast cancer cells and promotes integrin-mediated cancer cell invasion. In this study, we will comprehensively evaluate the significance of the integrin-kindlin-2 signaling pathway in breast cancer malignancy. We believe this work will significantly advance our understanding of breast cancer malignancy and may develop a novel therapeutic target for breast cancer treatment. Research Title: “Kindlin-2 is a novel target for breast cancer therapeutics”

2013 Wisconsin Showhouse for a Cure

The Castle on Newberry The 2013 Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse has a rich history, starting with the Milwaukee street where it is located: East Newberry Boulevard. The 12-block-long boulevard is on the National Register of Historic Places for its architecturally significant houses, and was named one of America’s Great Streets by the American Planning Association in 2009. Flanked by Frederick Law Olmstead-designed Lake Park and Riverside Park, Newberry Boulevard followed Olmstead’s design principles of wide-planted medians, tree canopies and ample lots with garden setbacks This year’s Showhouse was built in 1930, when Charles and Malthilde Boltz commissioned Frederick Graf to design a Bavarian-style Tudor home at 2228 E. Newberry Blvd. Mr. Graf was a popular and successful architect who designed over 100 structures in the Milwaukee area. His architectural style was diverse, ever cognizant of the owners’ style wishes, and often stood out visually from the surrounding neighborhood.

Showhouse

Another example of his work can be found one block from the Showhouse at 2112 E. Newberry Blvd The Ozaukee County Courthouse, Graf’s largest single commission, and Christ Polish Baptist Church on the corner of S. 19th and W. Rogers Streets, (now the Immanuel African Baptist Church), both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 4,500-square-foot Showhouse was built for a price of $25,000. It has two fireplaces, five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a ballroom, and a solarium between the vestibule and dining room. The exterior of the house was constructed of solid stone and half timbers that give the Tudor-style house a medieval flavor. The spaces between the timbers are nogged (filled in) with stone or patterned brick and the timbers and brick are left exposed. Massive chimneys, topped with decorative clay chimney pots, flank the hand-painted terra cotta tile on the steeply pitched gabled roof. The east- facing chimney prominently displays a giant iron script “B” for Boltz. From the decorative brickwork of the façade and chimney to the cut-tile shingles on the steep gabled roof, the house resembles a medieval country estate. Past and current homeowners and passersby alike refer to the house as “The Castle on Newberry”. Charles Boltz, the original owner, was founder and president of Milwaukee Brass and Aluminum Co., located in Milwaukee’s Third Ward. Now known as Saukville Brass and Machine Foundry, the business

Castle on Newberry Continued from page 17

is managed and owned by Lance Johnson a greatgrandson of the Boltz’s. Mr. Boltz also was vice president of the Milwaukee Baptist Union and a deacon and trustee of the North Avenue Baptist Church. The family read nightly from the family Bible and attended church not only on Sunday mornings but also on Sunday afternoons. The ballroom was used for church meetings and family gatherings. Mr. Boltz’s time in the house was short. He died in December 1934 at the age of 64 after a long illness. Mrs. Boltz, along with her housekeeper and friend Mrs. Mackie, remained in the house until Mrs. Boltz’ death in 1946 at the age of 68. In 1947, the executor of Mrs. Boltz’s estate sold the house to J. Lawrence Read and Ruth Hickman Read. Read and Son were food brokers, with an office in Whitefish Bay. The Reads lived in the house only two years, selling the house in 1949 to Dan and June Kaufman. Mr. Kaufman was a partner in Craig Kaufman & Associates and a general agent for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. The Kaufmans summered in Woodruff, in northern Wisconsin, and eventually moved to the Chicago area and on to Carefree, Arizona. In 1952, Albert J. Harvey Jr. and his wife Claire bought the house. Mr. Harvey was president of the Plankinton Arcade. Coincidently, the Harveys resided in two homes that have been Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouses, the Castle and the 2008 Showhouse at 3580 N. Lake Dr. The house changed ownership again in 1964, when it was purchased by attorney Ted Warshafsky and his wife Dolores (Dolly). One of the first women to assume a national leadership role in the anti-Vietnam War movement, Mrs. Warshafsky was chairwoman of Milwaukee’s First Vietnam Moratorium Committee. She organized marches in Milwaukee and planned the local details of the massive anti-war march in Washington D.C in 1970. She was a member of the Center Players at the Jewish Community Center where she acted in and directed many theater productions. She also was lauded for her acting abilities in productions for The Milwaukee Repertory Theater. Both Warshafskys, with their children in tow, marched along side Father James Groppi to support an open housing ordinance in Milwaukee. Along with his political activities, Mr. Warshafsky was well known for his dedication to social activism. That led to a friendship with Eugene McCarthy, who shared Mr. Warshafsky’s stand on civil rights and the Vietnam War. McCarthy made his decision to run for President at a meeting at the Warshafskys’ dining room table. At the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Mr. Warshafsky delivered the nomination speech for Julian Bond as a vice presidential candidate. The Castle on Newberry’s next owners were Polly and Giles Daeger, who bought the house in 1971. 40

Polly Daeger was a weaver, textile artist, jewelry maker, philanthropist, arts patron, social activist and world traveler. The ballroom served as Mrs. Daeger’s weaving studio, with six looms at one point. Giles Daeger was a professor of English at Marquette University and a benevolent patron to the arts and several humanitarian causes. In 1991 the Daegers sold the house to Gene F. Braaksma and Rebecca Bardwell. Dr. Bardwell was an associate professor of education and counseling in psychology at Marquette University, and a physiotherapist in private practice. Also a psychologist, Dr. Braaksma was psychologist/administrator for the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and an adjunct professor at Marquette University.

Aunt Peggy with Matt and Steve Jelenchick

Message From The Home Owners My wife, Kadie, and I have been involved with the WBCS, Inc. since 2009 and are very pleased to be able to lend further support by providing our home to be staged as the 16th Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse for a Cure. The decision to offer our home was an easy one to make that had little to do with the excitement of having our home transformed into something beautiful, but much more to do with something personal—or someone, to be precise. My aunt, Peg Wagner, a long time resident of Mequon and current resident of Yuma, Arizona is an exemplar of why this organization exists. Aunt Peg has been fighting breast cancer for the better part of the last decade and has persevered despite very difficult diagnoses and constant treatment, all while continuing to teach kindergarten and volunteer in her community. It is in the spirit of family, love and hope that Kadie and I would like to honor Peg Wagner as our inspiration for this year’s Showhouse. Thank you Aunt Peg for all of your contributions and we love you dearly. Steve and Kadie Jelenchick

Friends and family of the couple waited each year for their special invitation to the Thanksgiving Day feast with tables for as many as 50 guests set throughout the house. Current owners, attorneys Steve and Kadie Jelenchick, purchased the house in May 2012. Prior to purchasing the house, they lived just two blocks away on Stowell Ave. They often

noticed the Newberry house on walks with their dogs, Ollie, Otis and Ralphie, and were drawn by its substantial curb appeal, mixed building materials and eclectic style. A key feature of the exterior of the house is the entrance, with a turret nestled in the center of the house with a pointed roof and lancet windows on each side. Small leaded glass windows on either side of the entrance turret are filled with bottle-glass patterns. The sun parlor leads to a dining room with a coved ceiling and intricate crown molding, which is repeated in the adjacent hallway. The hammeredbrass chandelier and matching sconces with fleurde-lis patterns were designed and crafted by the original owner in his brass and aluminum foundry. The brass light fixtures, fireplace tools, switch plates, and faucets in the house also are believed to have been made in the foundry. The original kitchen included a chute for garbage that emptied into an incinerator in the basement. Two built-in refrigerators were the first of their kind in the neighborhood. Today’s kitchen has been recently remodeled. Quarter-sawn oak cabinetry, a butcher block maple table, inset-style back splashes with subway-style tile, and white oak flooring were used, in an effort to stay as true as possible to the original materials and style used in the butler’s pantry. The original large bathroom behind the kitchen is now a powder room and serves as an entrance/exit to the backyard. The living room has a large stone fireplace and arched floor-to-ceiling casement windows that are multi-paned, with panes in the upper windows arranged in a diamond pattern. The glass-fronted bookcases in the woodpaneled den have held many family pictures and mementos. The arts-and-crafts-designed staircase leads to the ballroom, which is above the entire area over the rear hall and garage. On the top and bottom of the staircase newels are lantern-like colorful leaded glass lights. The ballroom floor is checkered tile and its casement windows are hinged at the sides to open inward. The walls are graced with candleshaped sidelights. The master bedroom has a painted tile fireplace with two sets of tiles decorated with manof-war ships. The bathroom used by the youngest Boltz daughter has a black tub with foot-wide sides to sit on. The recessed hand-painted tiled wall behind the tub, temporarily covered, depicts sea gulls flying over a turbulent lake. A state-of-the-art tiled walk-in shower has seven shower heads with early Kohler brass gold-plated fixtures. Through the years, the owners have respected the home’s architectural integrity and historic elegance, as have the designers, landscapers, and contractors involved in the 2013 Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse transformation.
