Issue 11 Christmas Term 2017

Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends of St. Teresa’s, Once again it has been a very busy time, not only in the lead up to Christmas but throughout the autumn term. In September we welcomed eightythree new pupils to our school and new members of staff including Mrs Letson (P2), Mr Cullen (P3), Miss McNeill (P3), Miss O’Neill (P3), Miss O’Rourke (P4), Miss McKee (P5) as well as a new member of the learning support staff, Miss Connors (SLC), Miss Maguire (SLC) and Mrs Jagiello (P2). We trust that they feel very much part of the St. Teresa’s family. The children have had many opportunities to experience a wide variety of activities, both in extending their academic learning as well as an extensive extra-curricular programme. We are delighted that the Accelerated Reading programme is now embedded in Primary 5-7 and will be introduced in Primary 4 in February. Due to the success of Accelerated Reading, we have now introduced Accelerated Maths into P4-7. We will offer parent workshops in the new year for both programmes so that you will be better informed about these initiatives. The Primary 5 children have been developing their ‘Coding’ skills as part of Time to Code with Business in the Community. Mrs Sweeney’s Primary 5 class have also been involved in the Poetry in Motion programme which will culminate with a performance in the Ulster Hall as well as the ‘Rain Falling Up project’ which will also be performed in the Waterfront Hall later this year. Once again the P6 children have partnered with P6 classes in Euston Street Primary School as part of our Shared Education Peace Players programme. We are delighted to be the only primary school in Northern Ireland to have been selected to work with the President of Ireland to create a sculpture that will be unveiled at the Aras An Uachtarain in December with our P7 children in attendance in Dublin. In addition, we have continued with our partnership with SUSTRANS and the further development of the Mandarin language through our Chinese language assistant, Miss Wang who will prepare the children for their first Mandarin language qualification in May. The Friends of St Teresa’s have been very busy this term with the ‘Halloween Disco’ and the ‘Christmas Fair’. This newsletter gives a brief synopsis of life at St. Teresa’s this term. It is by no means an exhausted list but will give you a flavour of some of the exciting events that the children and staff have been involved in. I trust that you enjoy reading about our school and I look forward to another exciting year in 2018! Mr T. Rodgers

OPENING MASS TO CELEBRATE THE NEW YEAR

ACCELERATED MATHS

The Opening Mass of the School Year took place on Friday 13th October which also coincided with the feast day of St. Teresa of Avila. Father Hickland celebrated this Mass with us in St. Teresa’s Church. A selection of boys and girls from P4 – P7 participated in the Mass; arrying symbols, doing the readings and prayers and bringing up the gifts at the offertory. All the children participated in the singing and it was a really beautiful service.

Following the success of the Accelerated Reading Programme, we are delighted to announce the launch of Accelerated Maths. This will be a tool which will improve, even more, our already high standard in mathematics throughout Year 4 to Year 7.

STUDENT COUNCIL AND MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING

Thank you to everyone who supported this year’s Macmillan Coffee Morning held on Friday 29th September. We are delighted to announce that the event raised £2600. I would like to thank in particular Miss Smyth, Mr Kelly and the student council for their hard work in preparation for the coffee morning and to you the parents for supporting the event so generously. I will be delighted to split the funds raised between Macmillan and Serenity Joubert’s family.

Remember to ask your children about it!

CONGRATULATIONS TO MR MCSWIGGAN

P2&3 WORKING HARD

P2 VISIT CULTRA

Primary 2 visited Cultra Folk Museum in term one as part of their topic on houses and homes. The children enjoyed experiencing life long ago and finding interesting objects from the past. We talked to the blacksmith in the forge and the basket weaver showed us his skills. The children found out that there were no bathrooms in the houses and that you had your bath in front of the fire. The toilets were outside and we found lots of chamber pots under the beds! It was a great day out and it certainly brought our topic to life. P3 SCIENCE STARZ

Over the last few weeks all three of our Primary 3 classes, (Miss McNeill’s, Mr. Cullen’s and Miss O’Neill’s) have been developing their science investigative skills by taking part in hands on activities with our “Science Starz” Elita and Rose. Our children couldn’t wait to put on their white lab coats and become scientists for the day! The aim of the “Science Starz” workshops is to ignite our young children’s interest in Science and enhance their Science learning experience in the classroom. They certainly achieved this. There was a real chemistry slant to our experiments this year with the boys and girls looking at reversible and irreversible changes in materials. Some of our Primary 3 investigations included – • How to make our own Slime. • How to make a Foaming Density Column. • How to make our own Paper. Science Starz enjoyed St. Teresa’s so much they want to come back next year!

Sports Clubs

BOY’S GAELIC

This term the Primary 4 – Primary 7 boys competed in the Andy McCallin Cup on 3rd October The boys competed against a number of schools and performed with great pride in the jersey. They showed great endeavour and determination throughout each game and no shortage of skill. This was a great learning experience for the younger boys who came along and as they competed against schools with teams comprising mainly of P7 boys. They have shown great potential this term and with continued endeavour and training success in the future will not be far away. HURLING AND CAMOGIE

Following the success of last year’s hurling and camogie teams, once again training kicked off mid- September. It was wonderful to see the return of familiar faces, and even better to welcome new recruits from Primary Five to Primary Seven. This term we have focused on the skills involved in gaining possession, e.g. stopping and controlling a moving sliothar, jab and roll lift and over-head and chest catch. Our skills have really improved and we’ve had so much fun at the same time. Our Primary Five Hurlers had the fantastic opportunity to showcase their skills at a tournament in Bunscoil An Tsleibhe Dhuibh, where they played brilliantly as a team. We look forward to playing more competitive games throughout the year. The hurling and camogie teams would like to say a special thank you to the P.E. Department at De La Salle College who so kindly offered not only the use of their facilities, but provided transport for our team each week. We are so grateful and we know this will develop our skills even further! All in all, a successful term for these stars of the future, keep it up! SOCCER TEAM

The primary 6/7 football team took to the field this term for their first games. The boys played in the West Belfast festival day tournament in Sarsfields GAA and represented St Teresa’s with great pride. The team showed massive improvements throughout the day and gained some vital experience. We look forward to competing again in January and in the coming year. Well done to all the boys for their great efforts this term! Page 6

Primary 4

PRIMARY 4 ARE MUSIC MAKERS!

On 7th November P4C took part in the “Music Makers Morning” organised by the City of Belfast School of Music. The children had to learn 5 songs including Epio Tai Tai, Last Minute Calypso and Hot Stone Soup. They learnt lots about percussion instruments and even made their own instruments to accompany the songs. As part of the morning they also had to compose their own music to represent a weather forecast. The boys and girls had a lot of fun experimenting with different sounds to represent heavy rain, thunder and sunshine. Primary 4C were invited to the School of Music to perform their composition in front of 3 other schools and to sing their songs with the other children. It was a great experience and the boys and girls loved creating their own composition and sharing it with other schools.

DO THIS IN MEMORY MASS

‘Do this in memory’ Masses begin… The boys and girls in P4 gathered together to celebrate the Enrolment ceremony for their First Holy Communion in Holy Spirit Church at 11am on Sunday 12th November. Father Brendan celebrated this Mass and it was a lovely occasion for our school and parish community.

PLAYFUL SCIENCE CLUSTER

Mrs Branniff is working with teachers from local schools in developing “Playful Science” lessons for children in P1 and P2. We have created a Cluster for 4 local primary schools, where we work together in sharing ideas and good practice. Teachers in the cluster come from St Kevin’s PS, St Oliver Plunkett PS and St Joseph’s PS, Carryduff. We hope the lessons will be available soon, for our budding scientists to try and enjoy. These lessons develop the skills of enquiry in a creative and fun way for the children to enjoy, and learn at the same time. Watch this space for some fun pictures next time!

OPEN NIGHT 2017

St. Teresa’s held their open night on Monday 4th December. The open night was a great event in the school year when the children had the opportunity to showcase their school and all the areas of learning. The chamber choir sang for everyone on arrival. The Head Boy and Head Girl, in their welcoming speeches, reflected on their journey through St. Teresa’s Primary School and drew attention to the importance of our motto ‘Deeds not words.’ Mr Rodgers gave a warm, welcoming speech and a tour of the school was led by the Head Boy, Head Girl and their deputies and other Primary 7 children. We had a great turn out. We would like to remind parents that the deadline for applications for Primary 1 is Wednesday 10th January at 12 noon.

DAN THE SKIPPING MAN

On Monday 6th November ‘Dan the Skipping Man’ visited our school to teach the children new skills in skipping. All classes were given his expert tips on how to skip even better. We purchased class packs of skipping ropes for P4-7 and now each day during break and lunch time the children throughout the school are demonstrating their superb skills in skipping, keeping healthy and having fun!

THE MORNING STAR APPEAL

After last year’s success with the Morning Star Appeal, St. Teresa’s went into action again this year in support of this worthy cause. We collected a range of clothing for the residents who live in the Morning Star. We hope our gifts will bring some festive joy to the men of the Morning Star. Both the Morning Star and the school would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all those who responded so generously to the Christmas appeal. Page 8

Primary 5 Activities POETRY IN MOTION

Primary 5A were given the opportunity to take part in the ‘Poetry in Motion’ project run through by ‘Community Arts Partnership’ in term 1. The pupils attended four poetry workshops and created a range of different individual and group poems. Pieces of work for each pupil were then submitted for publishing and every child was given the opportunity to record their poem, making it available for digital download. The project was a great success with some fantastic pieces of writing being produced. The project will end in March 2017, with the class going to the Ulster Hall to showcase some of their poetry. Well done to everyone involved, it has been an amazing experience. RAIN FALLING UP

The children in P5A are currently working with the Rain Falling Up project. This project focuses on developing music and singing skills in children. The children have the opportunity to work with the creative team from Dumbworld and members of the Ulster Orchestra. The workshops will include composing, creative writing, dance, movement, animation and set and costume design. The project takes place over 6 months and will conclude with a performance in the Ulster Hall involving 300 primary school children who will be accompanied by the Ulster Orchestra. We cannot wait to see the final outcome! TIME TO CODE

Primary 5B have been taking part in a project called ‘Time to Code’ this term. The children have been learning how to use coding to create games, challenges and complete problem solving activities. They have become very confident in using the scratch programme through making characters, using scripts, creating dialogues and understanding the reasons that we use coding and instructions. Throughout the 12-week programme, volunteers from St Mary’s University College and various parts of the business sector have been assisting the pupils in their work. The programme concluded with the class visiting ‘Arris’ a global TV/technology company with offices in Stanmillis. The children were taken on a tour of the offices, explored the computer server room, had a Q&A session with the employees and saw how coding is used in real life. The engineers showed the children how they can take what they have learned in the programme into the real world by showing the pupils how using coding alone, they could learn to change the colour and logo on the ‘Sky TV’ tv guide. The programme was a great success and we hope that some of our children are inspired to take coding to the next level and possibly into their future careers.

FRIENDS OF ST. TERESA’S

A LOOK BEHIND THE SCENES

The Friends of St Teresa’s have been working very hard to raise funds for the school and provide opportunities for families to be part of school life. On Thursday 26th October FOST hosted their first fundraising event of the year. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all pupils from Primary 1 – Primary 7 who attended on the night. It really was a ‘spooky’ evening and was an excellent way for pupils to get into the Halloween spirit. A few surprise guests made an appearance on the night to add to the fun of the evening. The proceeds of the Halloween disco are already going a long way to enhance life in Saint Teresa’s. The event raised over £900.

Sunday 25th November saw the return of the annual FOST Christmas Fare and what an event it was. An amazing £3,200 was raised from the event which will go a long way to developing the Saint Teresa’s experience for all pupils. The children thoroughly enjoyed the day with particular interest in the craft table and a special visit to see Santa and his two elf helpers. A big thank you to the Chamber Choir who provided music for the event which only added to the occasion. The Christmas spirit was well and truly evident and it was an excellent way to start the run up to the Christmas period. A big thank you to all who attended and supported the event so generously and also to FOST who ran the event so smoothly. The Family Fund has also been a great success this term raising over £1840! We are delighted to announce this terms prize draw winner is Eoin Burrows from P5C. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this much needed fund.

ANTI-BULLYING WEEK

SHARED EDUCATION - PEACE PLAYERS

The whole school community participated in a very successful week of activities and events on the theme of “All Equal, All Different, All Together”. Mrs Branniff launched the week with an assembly where the children listened and answered many questions. During the week, all the children participated in a Poster Design competition and on Friday 23rd November, Mr Cullen’s P3 class presented a wonderful assembly to their parents, friends and fellow pupils. The children learned about inclusion, asking for help and what to do if they were being bullied. The week ended with the winners being announced and collecting their prizes at assembly.

The boys and girls from P6A and P6B have been involved in a school cross-community basketball programme delivered by PeacePlayers International. St Teresa’s P.S. has been twinned with Euston Street P.S East Belfast. PeacePlayers is an international organisation which works with children in areas where there has been conflict. Both schools have been meeting up every Thursday and Friday, over the last six weeks, at Grosvenor Leisure Centre and in each other’s school to play basketball. A lot of basketball skills have been learned and many friendships formed.

EDINA TRUST BULB PLANTING

The gardening club have been working with the Edina Trust to Thank you FoST- for sponsoring this important event in our school plant daffodils and crocus. As part of this project the children are recording the daily temperature and rainfall. This is being calendar… submitted to a science study to determine the best conditions to grow daffodils and crocus. There are over 60 schools involved in this project. All pupils had to be plant their bulbs on the same day and then record the date that the first bulb appears. The gardening club are looking forward to the new year when the flowers are expected to appear. Great work gardening club!

Primary Seven

CALLED BY NAME CEREMONY

WIZARD OF OZ AT ST. LOUISE’S

Primary 7 pupils began their preparation for Confirmation on Monday 27th November with their Called by Name ceremony in St.Teresa’s church. This was a beautiful, reverent ceremony where the pupils for the first time were called to the altar using their chosen confirmation name. Meaningful readings and beautiful singing made this a great start to their faith journey towards Confirmation Day in March. DESIGNING OUR OWN THEME PARKS

As part of a class focus on problem solving, the Primary 7 classes have been building their own theme parks. The children have been using many of their numeracy skills to carry out the task including working with budgets, projecting profits and loss as well as measuring area of the site where they are going to build their Theme Park.

On Wednesday 6th December both Primary 7 classes visited St. Louise’s Comprehensive College for their production of The Wizard of Oz. The children thoroughly enjoyed the day out and were even treated to a selection box each at the end of the performance! Thanks to St. Louise’s for their kind invitation and hospitality. ARAS AN UACHTARIAN

A memorable visit to Aras an Uachtarain on Thursday 14th December 2017 will forever be etched on the minds of the pupils of P7B. This was the culmination of a project started in St. Teresa’s last year. On that day they, along with 120 other pupils from throughout Ireland, became a formal part of Irish history. On that day a bronze sculpture, the ‘People’s Acorn’ was unveiled in the grounds of Aras an Uachtarain. This sculpture, which is part of the State’s 1916 Centenary Celebrations, is a bronze acorn with a textured surface containing the actual pencils used by all the pupils involved in the project. A time capsule containing the thoughts and dreams for Ireland’s future of all 150 pupils and some elderly Irish people, was placed inside the acorn by President Higgins. The P7 pupils were lucky enough to get to meet President Higgins and his wife and have their photograph taken with them. As a keepsake to this momentous day every pupil was presented with a copy of the poster which was placed in the time capsule and a beautiful Newbridge Christmas decoration with Aras an Uachtarain 2017 engraved on it. ‘Best day ever’ was the general consensus of pupils who left a little bit of themselves at Aras an Uachtarain that memorable day!!

ACCELERATED READING PROGRAMME

\

The ‘Accelerated Reading’ programme has been introduced into St Teresa’s this year. It has proved very popular with our key-stage 2 children. Pupils are allowed to choose their own books at suitable levels and then enabled to complete quizzes testing their comprehension skills. Children are set individual targets each half term and upon successfully achieving 85%+ in each quiz, achieve points towards their target. Rewarding achievement through the AR programme has been central to developing reading for pleasure for all pupils. Parents can keep track and monitor their child’s progress in the AR programme by accessing the ‘Accelerated Reading Home Connect’ link sent out at the start of term. The school have invested heavily in the programme and will roll it into P4 in term 2. Since implementing the AR programme the pupils in KS2 have demonstrated fantastic growth in reading attainment and we look forward to celebrating pupils continued success. CHAMBER CHOIR

The chamber choir have been working hard this term and have produced some beautiful sounds. The children have given freely of their time after school and also during lunch time to prepare to hit the high notes. Mr McGreevy has been very impressed by the children’s commitment and high quality of singing. The children performed at St. Peter’s Cathedral on Wednesday 6th December at the West Belfast Schools Festival of Carols which saw 14 local primary schools take part. The 40 strong choir from St. Teresa’s made a beautiful sound which echoed round the cathedral in what was a very memorable evening. The chamber choir have also sang at the school Open Night with their haunting rendition of ‘Night of Silence’ and the stunningly beautiful ‘O Holy Night’ featuring the talented Caolan Fitzsimons from Primary 7. Mr McGreevy would like to thank all the children and parents for their support over the past 3 years who have been involved in the chamber choir. He will look back on the many fond memories the chamber choir has brought to both him and the school community. Page 13

This year Primary 3 preformed the Christmas nativity in a special way. Prickly Hay took on a country theme with a special meaning that Jesus came for everyone at Christmas and that we are all special no matter if rich or poor, boy or girl and we all are important in Gods eyes. The boys and girls worked very hard learning their lines and singing their songs. The show was a great success. Well Done Primary 3.
