OPEN MORNINGS
After a short hiatus over the summer, the National Armed Forces & Emergency Services Events Team are back and back with a bang! There’s lots going on, so where to start?
Well, we start with the 2024 Services Awards taking place on Thursday September 12 at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland. What a line up we have this year and as a judge for this year’s awards, I have to say the standard in nominees was exceptional.
There are some inspirational stories to be heard and I look forward to another super evening.
Hot on the heels of the awards we have the second installment of The Forces Family Education Event this time taking place at Princes Hall, Aldershot on Wednesday September 18. Over 25 boarding schools and training providers will be present to showcase information on forces educational allowances. More on our education focus in this issue…in fact quite a few pages dedicated to this.
More information on these events can be found later in the magazine or by visiting the NAFESE website www. nafese2023.com
Looking ahead to October, the Stadium of Light once again plays host to the breakfast launch of NAFESE 2025 with some big announcements to be made. More information on the launch which takes place on Tuesday October 8 can be had by emailing hospitality@nafese2023.com
In the meantime, good luck to all nominees for the 2024 Services Awards and I hope to see as many of you as possible at the events mentioned. Kind regards,
Mal Mal Robinson, Editor, Eyes Front Magazine
Rounding off September the National Armed Forces & Emergency Services Event spreads its wings for the first time and visits the Welsh capital on September 26 at the Vindico Arena.

FORRES SANDLE MANOR
A Home for Military Families
At Forres Sandle Manor, we understand the challenges military families face, and we are committed to providing a nurturing and stable environment for your children. With a long-standing relationship with military families, we offer a supportive and enriching educational experience tailored to each child’s needs.
As an independent co-educational boarding and day school for children aged 2-16, we pride ourselves on promoting well-rounded development. Nestled in 35 acres of stunning grounds on the edge of the New Forest, our school provides a serene setting where children thrive both academically and personally. Our dedicated and experienced staff guide each student to reach their full potential while fostering a love of learning and fun.
We offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including sports, dance, drama, and music, allowing every child to explore their interests and develop new skills. Our facilities include three cricket pitches, two rugby and football pitches, an outdoor heated swimming pool, an astro turf, four tennis courts, and an indoor sports hall, ensuring ample opportunities for students to stay active. Our co-curricular clubs further broaden the sports offering, catering to diverse interests and abilities.
For our younger boarders, the experience is centred in the Manor, right at the heart of the school. This warm and inviting setting serves as a true home-away-from-home, where children feel safe, supported, and connected to the school community. With seven live-in boarding staff, we ensure that each boarder receives the care and attention they need, prioritising their well-being and personal growth. Our staff are always on hand to provide guidance and comfort, making sure your child feels at home even when away from their own.
Understanding the unique needs of military families, we have established our Supporting Active Service (SAS) group for children with parents on active deployment. The SAS group meets weekly, offering a safe space for children to connect, share experiences, and learn from each other. Older children often mentor younger ones, providing peer support and practical strategies for coping with having a parent away on duty. This network helps foster resilience, empathy, and a sense of community among our students.
At Forres Sandle Manor, we are more than just a school – we are a family. We are dedicated to ensuring that every military child feels valued, understood, and supported. Join us, and let your child flourish in a community that truly cares.

Downe House is one of the top all girls’ boarding schools in the UK, offering a world-class traditional independent education with a forward thinking and outward looking ethos. With a focus on excellence and the individual, girls are encouraged to make the most of the exceptional academic, co-curricular and enrichment opportunities on offer and to create their own paths, authentic to themselves.
Supported by personal tutors, girls excel not only in their studies but in Sport, Creative and Performing Arts and Music, going on to study at the top universities around the world. A Microsoft Showcase school, girls are equipped with outstanding digital skills, preparing them for a fast-developing modern workplace.
We have a strong global outlook that prepares our young women to be world-ready, offering them opportunities to study and work abroad. In Year 8, all girls spend time at our school in France, and in years 10 and 12, girls can take part in our Global Exchange Programme, with 16 schools across five continents. The Sixth Form takes this further, offering global internships, which in 2023/24 featured more than 25 internships spanning five continents, alongside a Mini MBA, the Ivy House Leadership Award and our Sixth Form Interview Training Programme, which uses VR and AI technology. Girls leave Downe House with confidenceempowered to succeed.
Academically, we encourage ambition and ignite a love of learning through a supportive community. Although personal triumphs and individual achievements are the most celebrated within the School, the foundation of academic success is evident from our GCSE and A Level results. In 2023, at I/GCSE 81% of grades were 9-7 and remarkably
58% achieved grades 9-8 (A**-A*). At A Level, 84% of pupils achieved A* to B grades with the A*/D1/D2 percentage remaining consistently high, at 64%. These outstanding results enabled our girls to secure places at some of the world’s top universities.
What makes Downe House special? The answer is in the Downe House DNA:
• Collaboration
• Resilience
• Creativity
• Aspiration
• Compassion
• Communication
• Outward looking
In the classroom, on the pitch, on stage and everywhere in between, these values are the hope and aspiration for every pupil. Upon stepping through the School gates, everyone is treated and celebrated as an individual. Whether she is an artist with an aptitude for mathematics, a scientist with a love of music, or an athlete with an interest in politics, she will be nurtured and encouraged to discover her passions and talents.
Hear from our pupils, parents, alumnae and staff about what makes Downe House special in our podcast which can be found on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and all major podcast platforms. Search “The Downe House Podcast” or visit our website www.downehouse.net
THE GIFT OF AN ALL GIRLS’ EDUCATION
It is well known that girls-only education leads to higher academic achievement, but it is the confidence and self-belief which pupils develop at these schools which provide the most convincing reason for choosing a single-sex school for your daughter.
CONFIDENCE
Equipping girls with confidence is paramount; confidence to be themselves, to like themselves and to be happy in their own skin. We want our girls to be brave, courageous, kind and compassionate, without reverting to gender stereotypes. Without male peers around them, girls are liberated in the classroom to take risks and offer opinions, make mistakes and make choices without worry of what boys may think of them.
GIRLS CAN BE GIRLS FOR LONGER
Outside the classroom, you will find that girls can be girls for longer. In a single-sex school, girls tend not to wear make-up and are delightfully free from pressures to shorten their skirts and look a certain way. In the world our children now live, there are huge pressures, particularly from social media, to grow up quickly and behave in certain ways, but in a singlesex school, girls can be girls for longer; they play games, ride scooters, bake cakes, make dens, enjoy fancy dress and are true to their age.
SPECIALIST TEACHING
As the league tables demonstrate, there is compelling evidence that single sex schools lead to higher academic achievement. In all-girls classrooms, we specialise in the
way girls learn best; teachers can challenge girls’ tendencies to seek safety in structures and schedules. Girls are also empowered to reject gender stereotyping, particularly in sports, subject and career choices.
LEADERSHIP
All girls can lead. Introverts are just as capable as leading as their more extrovert counterparts and are encouraged to find their voice in a way that works for them. They are surrounded by strong female role models, in the pupil, staff and alumnae body, all of whom work together to provide a secure network of support for each other.
RELATIONSHIPS WITH BOYS
Single sex schools today are increasingly developing partnerships to enable girls and boys to get to know each other and develop “normal” relationships. At Downe House, we have a strategic partnership with Radley College, offering opportunities for pupils from both schools to work together academically, socially and for enrichment.
Preparing girls for the co-ed world could hardly be more effective. Giving girls the gift of confidence means they can cope with anything. By the time they enter the co-ed world of university, work and life, they have acquired the life skills and self-confidence to succeed, empowering them for life.

THE ROYAL SCHOOL
Boarding in a Family Environment
The Royal School is part of the dynamic state boarding sector, combining the advantage of affordable fees, yet still holding on to its independent feel.
Located in a leafy suburb of Wolverhampton, The Royal School is conveniently situated between countryside and the UK’s second largest city, Birmingham, allowing students to experience the rich contrasts of British life. This also makes travel to other UK cities straightforward, and we have recently had day trips to London, Manchester, Liverpool, and Oxford.
Family is at the heart of everything we do at The Royal School and all our boarders benefit from a structured and vibrant daily routine. It is no surprise that while many busy families may struggle with homework and other day school aspects, our boarders excel. Boarders quickly adapt to their routines and are consistently amongst the top achievers in their respective year groups. They also have the advantage of the use of the expansive school grounds ensuring their wellbeing by playing games outside whether it be football, tennis or basketball, crafting, cooking and enjoying film nights. The strength of the family ethos is enhanced by our fantastic and experienced staff and their own families including the much-loved Harry and Thomas who are six and two, who have the boarders in the palms of their hands.
Developing the all-around individual is another key theme that runs throughout boarding at The Royal. While we encourage all our boarders to aspire and achieve high academic standards, we also believe we have a duty to
prepare them for their future life and career. Over the past few of years, this has led us to develop a ‘Boarding Passport’ which documents all the skills and activities that boarders acquire and take part in during their time with us. We can be confident that once they leave us they are able to iron a shirt, can keep up with current affairs and will have visited a place of worship – all valuable skills in their own way which are not necessarily part of any regular curriculum. There is also an emphasis on celebration and learning from other cultures, which all our boarders get simply from the number of countries and social backgrounds that they come from.
Being part of boarding at The Royal School means being part of a nurturing community where our boarders flourish. So why not join us here and become part of the Royal Family?

POWYS COUNCIL
GWEITHIO I NI
Andy’s role supporting people with an armed forces connection in Powys
Andy Jones is a former Welsh Guard and Falklands War veteran, who for the last four years has been tasked with supporting people in Powys with an armed forces connection.
His role has seen him set up six veterans’ drop-in centres at Newtown, Brecon, Welshpool, Llandrindod Wells, Machynlleth and Builth Wells, which are now run by military charities. He is a regular attender at their monthly meetings, clocking up the miles as he covers Wales’s largest county – around a quarter of the size of Wales – and has become known as the person to go to, if you have a military connection and need to get something done.
Andy humbly suggests he is only able to signpost or refer people to the right place, in most instances, but says one of his biggest successes was being able to quickly get help for a former soldier, who was being cuckooed (a person’s home is taken over, usually for criminal purposes) by a county lines drugs gang and had been left without money or food.
Andy is employed by Powys County Council as an Armed Forces Liaison Officer, directly funded by the Welsh Government, and as well as supporting veterans and serving personnel, is tasked with making sure that public bodies in Powys pay ‘due regard’ to the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant and meet the legal responsibilities placed on them by the Armed Forces Bill 2021.
Andy believes there is a lot to be positive about and said:
“Powys is committed to not just providing an equal level of support but to surpass that – to be the best local authority in Wales for the help it gives to veterans.
“We’ve gained the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Silver Award and, we are a member of Pride in Veterans Standard (PiVS) supporting LGBT+ veterans and serving personnel. We are also doing training with frontline staff to help them identify ex-serving personnel and are assisting GP surgeries in the county to become ‘veteran friendly’. Powys should be very proud!
Andy who was on the ship ‘Sir Galahad’ when it was bombed during the Falklands War got involved in helping veterans while working for the Prison Service. He took the step after recognising that he needed help with his own military PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and then used his experience to help others.
Years of work supporting veterans, and others with a military connection, have followed in prisons and then with the Probation Service. He now counts himself as being “semiretired”, living near Brecon, but still diligently provides support to the same group of people through his part-time job with the council for 14 days every month.
