WELCOME

Hello and welcome to the National Armed Forces & Emergency Services Community Directory for 2025, brought to you in association with AM Safety Specialists Ltd.

This is the second installment for the Directory following the inaugural success of our 2024 version, which proved popular across the UK and overseas for members of the services - armed, emergency and volunteer.

The team at the National Armed Forces & Emergency Services Events (NAFESE) have been busy in 2024 in what was a whirlwind year and associated with no less than 12 events in 12 months, be they our own productions or partner events such as the Veterans Awards for England, Scotland and Wales.

Our main National flagship event - The National Armed Forces & Emergency Services Event - held annually at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland is continuing to grow from strength to strength and will be in its third year in 2025. The latest event sees the addition of a Trade Zone, where exhibitors wishing to showcase their products direct to armed forces units, police forces, NHS trusts and the like, can do so inside the Beacon of Light, opposite the Stadium of Light.

The Trade Zone is a welcome addition to regular features already held at NAFESE such as the Armed Forces Veterans Breakfast Club, Recruitment & Resettlement Zone, STEM Village for visiting schools and colleges and Regional Showcase Hub.

This year’s event takes place on April 9, just seven days from our first scheduled

event on April 2 at the Victory Services Club, which celebrates 25 years of the modern Armed Forces Covenant, which was first mentioned in military dispatches in April 2000 - more on this further in the publication.

The majority of companies, brands, associations and public bodies featured inside the 2025 version of this Directory have close ties to the Covenant and it goes without saying, I would like to add my own personal thanks to them for their support with this publication.

I hope the Directory will be a turn to resource throughout 2025 with a range of advice for those in the services community, with the magazine available both in print and online.

The very best of wishes for and throughout 2025!

Kind regards,

Event Director & Project Editor, National Armed Forces & Emergency Services Events Team.

EDUCATION

& TRAINING

There are an abundance of opportunities in training and education for all services personnel, with a particular emphasis on the armed forces, which has to be said offers the best package out of all of the services in terms of resettlement.

NHS Trusts, Police Forces and Fire Brigades all have their own professional development opportunities internally, as do the armed forces with their Standard Learning Credits (SLC) and the Police can turn to the Police Resettlement Magazine and Expo (taking place on Thursday July 10, 2025 at Manchester Central Convention Complex), however as highlighted, it is the armed services with their Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme (ELCAS) offer which stands out.

The following pages within our training section stand testament to this notion. For further information on ELCAS see www.enhancedlearningcredits.com

PLASTERING | PLUMBING AND HEATING CARPENTRY | KITCHEN FITTING BRICKLAYING | WALL & FLOOR

RESETTLEMENT FROM THE SERVICESNETWORKING

Coming from a forces background and having edited a military resettlement magazine for over six years, I would like to think I am well versed in the circles of transition from serving personnel to veteran.

There are approximately 19,000 making that move each year according to Government sources, a substantial figure indeed.

There are of course, thousands making the same move from careers in the NHS, Police and Fire Service in addition to veterans of all services looking to take the next step in their civilian career ladder, either up or down, more responsibility or less, as life and our own journey dictates.

If there is one thing to consider when looking for your next role in whatever you do, even a voluntary role you had on your “to do” list, is the art of networking.

You could be in the early stages of transitioning from the services with many more years left in you, to in the crux of retirement, personally, you can never do enough networking, nor should you ever stop.

I was always told, when you introduce yourself to someone, you are both introducing each other to a network of contacts. You may play football with the HR Manager for a blue chip firm, or they could take yoga with the general secretary of the professional association you have been looking to join, sometimes it’s not always about what you know, but who you know!

Therefore, embrace any opportunity that suits you to network, you never know, it could be the most important cuppa, pint or lunch you’ve had in your life to date.

We recognise that those from the Armed Forces have a unique skillset that are highly sought-after in a safety-critical environment like ours at Network Rail including:

Smoothing the transition

When you’re looking to leave the military, you don’t know quite what you are in a civilian setting,’ says Jo Bland, now working as a change and transformation consultant after 15 years in the Royal Air Force and Ministry of Defence. ‘When you’re sitting in front of Indeed. com trying to think of relevant key words and specialisms, it takes a while to understand how breadth of experience, being a Jack-of-alltrades, can translate into good opportunities’.

Chiefs of staff are often described as ‘the ultimate generalists’, typically highly flexible, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to build trust quickly. These are skills that are well developed in the military, and are invaluable in leadership, advisory and operational roles in both the commercial and not-for-profit sectors. ‘It’s understanding how projects and project mechanisms work, and all the soft skills you need to bring your stakeholders with you’, says James Goodwin, currently chief of staff to the CEO of rapidly scaling green tyre company ENSO. ‘I think that’s something that military people can do really well. They just don’t recognise it.’

‘Anyone who’s done Staff College has done some sort of logistics planning, some sort of strategy; they understand the basics of HR. So you’ve got a generalist, but also someone that is used to learning and adapting, because you’re often in a role for only a couple of years. You have to have the capacity to absorb all of the different strands of the organisation, and not be an expert in any one thing but be able to pull from the experts when you need it,’ agrees Tom Coker, who has translated his decades of army experience into advising CEOs on culture, business strategy, risk, and process improvements. ‘But the other side is having

the ability to talk to people because often the person on the shop floor is the one who knows how to fix the problem, and no one’s thought to ask them’.

The challenge, James says, is ‘helping individuals when they’re going through that transition to recognise that they do have something unique about them. I think this is where personal development, understanding yourself and the journey you’ve been on, is really fundamental.’

It is also at the core of the Chief of Staff Association, which, through its membership, education and mentoring programmes, is developing an active global network of influential and inspiring people, able to help smooth the path from the military to rewarding roles in other sectors. As Jo says, ‘the most important thing I’ve got from the CSA was a strong network and good friends, whom I could call on for advice and who acted as sounding boards when I started to think about leaving’.

Lead with purpose as a chief of staff.

When the Cadent Military Community (CMC) was founded in 2018, it wasn’t just about creating another workplace community group. It was about creating a place where shared experiences could fuel connections, where colleagues could lean on each other, and where people with a military background and those who support them could truly feel they belong.

Led by colleagues with lived experience and supported by our leadership team, the CMC has grown into a vibrant community of over 230 members. Together, we celebrate the skills, resilience, and values that make the military community so unique, while creating opportunities for everyone to thrive – whether they’re transitioning to a civilian career or seeking a sense of connection and purpose.

This year has been full of moments that remind us why the CMC exists. Armed Forces Day was once of them. At our Head Office in Ansty, Coventry, we welcomed representatives from Covenant signatories, the Royal British Legion, local Regiments, and Combat 2 Coffee. The highlight? Hearing Andy Reid MBE share his story of courage and determination. His journey bought the room to a standstill, reminding us of the strength and inspiration that lives within the military community.

In August, 7 of our colleagues took on the Welsh 3000 challenge, climbing 15 peaks in under 24 hours. It was tough, but they kept pushing for each other and for Scotty’s Little Soldiers, raising over £4,000 for a cause close to our hearts. That’s the kind of determination and camaraderie that defines the CMC.

Then, in November, we paused to reflect. Remembrance Day we saw colleagues across the business come together for lunch and learn sessions, sharing stories of service and sacrifice. Our North West network led a moving Armistice event in Manchester, a powerful reminder of the legacy we honour every day.

But the CMC isn’t just about remembrance, it’s about creating opportunities for the future. Through tailored recruitment programmes, we’re helping service leavers and reservists transition to civilian roles, showing how their unique skills are valued here. And by partnering with local cadet units and STEM initiatives, we’re inspiring the next generation to find their place in our industry.

At Cadent, you’re more than just a team member. You’re part of a community that sees the value in who you are and what you bring. A place where you’ll feel supported, celebrated, and truly at home.

If you’re ready to start your next chapter with us, visit www.careers.cadentgas.com. We’d love to welcome you.

We celebrate 25 years of the modern Armed Forces Covenant in 2025, with the notion of a pact between the UK nation and its armed forces, coming into focus in April 2000.

It was coined in Soldiering – The Military Covenant (booklet), UK: Ministry of Defence, April 2000, and has now entered political discourse as a way of measuring whether the government and society at large have kept to their obligations to support members of the armed forces.

The Ministry of Defence states “In putting the needs of the Nation, the Armed Forces and others before their own, they

forgo some of the rights enjoyed by those outside the Armed Forces. So, at the very least, British personnel should always expect the Nation and their commanders to treat them fairly, to value and respect them as individuals, and to sustain and reward them and their families.”

This special bond or link between country and armed forces indeed goes back over 400 years and was first featured in the Elizabeth I era, with some citing the fact an unspoken pact between Monarchy and its Armies goes back even further to that time period of Henry VIII.

The then General Sir Richard Dannatt who was Chief of the General Staff from 2006, pushed further for the modern Armed Forces Covenant to come into play and this was backed by the Government at this time.

Since then the Armed Forces Covenant has grown into the scheme and pledge we see today with over 12,000 businesses, councils and NHS Trusts signed up as Covenant signatories.

The MOD has also introduced the Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) with levels of commitment to the military available from bronze to gold.

“The Armed Forces Covenant is important to those serving and veterans as it is a clear indicator to an individual, that a specific company or body publicly backs the forces community and can be a big help from anything to selecting a potential new employer when leaving the services, all the way to understanding particular companies one can turn to for support in a wide range of elements” adds NAFESE Event Director, Mal Robinson.

To find out more information on the Covenant in general please see www. armedforcescovenant.gov.uk

Housing issues affecting serving personnel when a relationship ends

The end of any relationship can be a traumatic experience. For members of the armed forces and the wider defence community, this can have added difficulties, especially in relation to housing.

Steps to take if you choose to separate

If you are a member of the armed forces community, whether serving or a spouse or civil partner, and you have made the decision to separate, divorce or dissolve your civil partnership, there are a number of steps that need to be taken in relation to your housing if you are living in service family accommodation (“SFA”).

As a first step, the serving person can consider moving into alternative service accommodation, if available, or to private accommodation, if affordable. You should start by having conversations with your welfare support team to understand what options are available to you in your circumstances. There is usually a period of time given to you and your partner to try and resolve your issues before any firm decision needs to be made in relation to your service accommodation.

If your relationship has come to end

If it becomes clear that your relationship has come to an end, the serving person will need to change their Personal Status Category (“PStat Cat”) to reflect the current situation. There are several processes that need to be followed once the relationship status has changed, but once the relevant department has been

informed, a notice to vacate the SFA is issued. If you have a reason to believe you cannot vacate the accommodation, for example medical or educational needs, you should urgently contact the Loss of Entitlements Team (“LOET”). If you remain in the accommodation after the expiry of the notice, without the necessary agreement, there can be serious legal consequences.

Seeking advice from your welfare team and specialist family law solicitors will help provide the best advice possible during this difficult time.

Their mission is to do everything they can to get veterans back on their feet, however long it takes. However, you don’t need to be in crisis – all veterans are welcome, offering support for the local Wearside area.

Too old to fight, too proud to ask

For over 200 years the Gurkhas have fought alongside us - now these brave veterans count on us for survival.

Many Gurkhas have been decorated for their courage and loyalty, but medals don’t pay for food, fuel or essential items such as clothing.

A gift of just £25 could support a Gurkha veteran for a week.

Veterans Awards 2025

The Veterans Awards are a Not for Profit Organisation that promotes the positives from the Veteran Community, serving reservists and those organisations that support us It's been put together by Veterans for Veterans in what has become our home nations national awards with three separate award ceremonies taking place in England, Scotland and Wales and we also support the Northern Irish Awards Any money above and beyond costs is then distributed via a small grants scheme to smaller CIC's and Charities who work at grass routes level within the veterans community and have a turnover of under 100k per annum!

In the UK we have a huge number of highly successful Armed Forces Veterans that have made the transition from the Military to civilian life We want to reward these veterans who have gone above and beyond and excelled in their relevant fields. They will act as role models for future service leavers. We want to find the people who even during the most difficult periods have excelled!

We hope that the veterans, reservists and Organisations who get shortlisted at our awards can tell their story and act as role models for future service leavers. We plan to make a series of short videos form our shortlisted finalists giving tips and advice to help other service leavers! BUILDING STRONGER COMMUNITIES ON CIVVY STREET

How Help for Heroes is Bridging the Gap Between Veterans, Families and Communities

For many veterans and their families, the war doesn’t end when they leave the armed forces— it continues in the quiet moments of everyday life. That’s why Help for Heroes has adopted a new approach to helping veterans in need, not just through support programs, but by embedding itself in the heart of local communities.

The challenges of reintegration into ‘civvy street’ are widely felt, whether it be the disruption to routine, adjustment to a disability or connecting with new people away from military-life. In fact, according to The Office of Veteran Affairs, under half of all serving personnel feel prepared for life after service.

Asking for help can be difficult, especially if a veteran is used to ‘toughing it out’. For this reason, Help for Heroes has shifted its focus to meeting veterans where they already are, and empowering them within their community to heal, connect and thrive.

Reaching Veterans in their Communities

In 2024, Help for Heroes adjusted its service with the aim to reach more veterans than ever before. Until now, care and support has been delivered through support workers, health professionals and online recovery tools, as well as sports, activities, events and coffee mornings.

Now, the charity has introduced an additional way of working that helps veterans to not only get back on their feet, but to use their strengths, skills, talents and interests to live well after service.

By embedding ‘Community Builders’ into towns and cities across the UK, veterans and their families are given a local point of contact to receive personal, holistic help and support, locally. As well as making use of the charity’s core services such as clinical support or the Recovery College, veterans will now have more opportunities to connect with other veterans, build local networks for themselves and their families, socialise more frequently and use the resources around them to build a better future.

Finding A Local Community

Community builders host and attend many events up and down the UK, and welcome new members to come along for a friendly chat and a cuppa. Anyone can attend, no matter where or when they served, or for how long. Veterans who wish to learn more and get more involved in their communities can do so by visiting the Help for Heroes website https://www. helpforheroes.org.uk/get-help/ .

MILITARYvsCANCER

MILITARY VS CANCER:

SUPPORTING THE ARMED FORCES COMMUNITY.

ONE TEAM – ONE FIGHT

Military vs Cancer is a dedicated charity committed to supporting military personnel, veterans, and their families as they face the challenges of a cancer diagnosis. Established to address the unique needs of those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, we provide practical, emotional, and financial assistance to individuals and families impacted by this life-changing illness.

Our mission stems from a profound respect for the sacrifices made by those in the Armed Forces. Cancer knows no boundaries, and we firmly believe that no member of the military community should face it alone.

At Military vs Cancer, our focus is on making a tangible difference in the lives of those we support. Whether it’s assisting with medical expenses, funding vital equipment, helping families during treatment, or providing respite opportunities, our work is driven by compassion and a commitment to easing the burden of cancer on military families.

Community and collaboration are central to our efforts. We work closely with individuals, businesses, and organisations to raise awareness and essential funds through events like the Great North Run, tandem parachute jumps, charity balls, and Armed Forces Day Rugby events. These events not only support our cause but also create a sense of unity

and shared purpose within the Armed Forces community and beyond.

We also amplify the voices of those we assist, sharing their powerful stories of resilience and hope. From former British Army servicemen like Gareth Thomas, who shares his unfiltered experiences of cancer treatment, to supporters like Lt Cdr Jim Gallagher RN who takes on extraordinary challenges such as an Ironman triathlon and running 1 to 25 miles a day in a random order throughout Advent , these stories inspire and remind us of the strength found in solidarity.

As a charity rooted in the Armed Forces community, we are particularly active in the North East of England, hosting flagship events and providing vital support to military families in the region. However, our impact reaches across the UK, ensuring that no military family is left behind in their time of need.

Military vs Cancer is a testament to the strength and unity of the Armed Forces community. Together, we honour those who serve, support those in need, and work tirelessly to make a meaningful difference in the fight against cancer.

EDUCATION ALLOWANCE

WHAT IS THE CONTINUITY OF EDUCATION ALLOWANCE (CEA)?

The Continuity of Education Allowance (CEA) is offered by the MOD to assist with funding a place in a boarding school in order to help to provide continuity of education for a child, and to enable the spouse of a Service person to accompany them on assignments.

In claiming CEA, a Service person must fully accept that accompanied service is the overriding principle for maintaining entitlement. An exception to this requirement is when a Service person is classified as Involuntarily Separated (INVOLSEP). This classification must be confirmed by the claimant’s Commanding Officer or by means of casework to Service Personnel and Veterans Agency (SPVA) before claiming while serving unaccompanied.

CEA is available for children aged eight years and over. If your child has Special Education Needs or Disability (SEND), this should not prevent their admission to a boarding school, and an allowance for SEN support may be available in some circumstances.

Children for whom CEA is being claimed must be placed in their correct chronological year group. If a school suggests that a child be placed, on entry to the school, in the year behind (or in front of) their correct year group, advice and authority for this must be sought from the Children’s Education and Advisory Service before the placement is accepted, as this may affect your eligibility to claim CEA. Advice and authority must also be sought from CEAS if a child is asked to repeat a year in a school they are already attending.

You are expected to contribute a minimum of 10% towards the fees. The fees are only part of the costs of attending a boarding school and so it is important to be clear about any extras the school charges for.

Further information about eligibility is in Joint Service Publication 752, part 2 (Chapter 9). To check your eligibility and to apply, contact your Unit Personnel Office.

The Continuity of Education Allowance is also available for Guardians of children, however, please check with your Unit Welfare Officer for more information on what is considered a case by case scenario.

General Considerations

1. When considering sending your child/children to boarding school it is essential that you fully consider following factors: Boarding education is expensive and you need to be aware of the full costs involved before committing yourself.

2. The headline fees can link to other additional charges which vary school by school. The CEA rate covers up to 90% of the headline fee up to a published ceiling. Costs above that ceiling and additional school charges are the responsibility of the parent.

3. High independent school fees do not automatically result in good or outstanding schools.

4. Maintained, or State Boarding Schools, offer lower fees because they charge only for boarding provision with the tuition element being State funded.

5. Every child is an individual and a school suitable for one child may not be suitable for another; one child’s needs may best be met by a large, highly academic school, while another child needs a small family atmosphere in which to thrive.

6. Choosing a boarding school is not easy and you will need to gather together as much information as possible. Do visit as many schools and speak with as many teachers and boarding staff as possible. Try to talk to pupils and other parents and remember not to commit yourself before you have confirmed that you will be eligible for CEA through engaging fully with the application process.

7. Check school inspection reports which are public documents available either from The Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED).

FRANCHISING

Dreaming of self-employment but don’t know where to start? The seas of entrepreneurship are wildly unpredictable, so think of a franchise as the vessel which will help you navigate these uncertain waters.

There are two main characters in the franchise story:

The Franchisor: This is the person who started the brand and put the systems in place. The franchisor then licences their model to you.

The Franchisee: That’s you. You’re the person with the entrepreneurial spirit who buys the rights to open your own business using the franchisor’s brand and systems.

To become a franchisee, you’ll often pay a franchise fee. Think of this as your ticket into the franchisor’s world. It’s a one-time payment that covers several things including but not limited to:

The Brand Name: You get to use the name, logo, and reputation of the franchisor’s business. Basically, you’re borrowing brand recognition to jump ahead of the local competition.

The Business Blueprint: You’re certainly not expected to wing it. The franchisor has already developed and refined their operations, marketing strategies, and business development. systems.

Franchises offer a great way to be your own boss with the security of an established brand and system behind you. It’s like having training wheels on your entrepreneurial bike. However, research is key. Make sure the franchise you choose has a good reputation and a solid track record. It’s important to make sure you get on with the franchisor too and you genuinely like each other.

Starting your own business is no walk in the park, but that’s why franchising exists. You can be in business for yourself, but not by yourself.
