Brolly Good Llanelli Town Centre Makeover LLANELLI town centre has a giant stainless steel and glass umbrella unfurling engraved with public art.

As the structure has taken shape over Easter at the junction of Vaughan and Stepney Streets it has attracted a lot of attention.

It is part of a £200,000 canopy replacement improvement of the main shopping thoroughfares.

Shirley Simpson from Seaside thought the improvements to the town centre were “a breath of fresh air.”

She said: “We now have a chance of attracting a whole new shopping experience with all the good work that has been done in the town centre. I have been ashamed to show visiting family and friends about town but now they want to come and holiday with me because of East Gate and all the good things happening.”

ADREF is one of five elements in a total of £60-million invested in the town centre with the deliverance of Y Ffwrnes theatre, East Gate, Llanelli Library and Llanelly House, which will be completed later this year.

In all £4.3-million is being spent on the town centre under the ADREF scheme which has been supported by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government. It will be completed with additional public art features next month (May.) It has helped link in the town with the £26-million East Gate leisure development on the eastern end of Stepney Street, Y Ffwrnes, public library and Llanelly House.

Paving in the Central Square will be completed by the end of April. The canopies along Stepney and Vaughan Streets are being erected and will be completed in May. Painting of properties is now completed.

Under the ADREF scheme there has been a £2million refurbishment of Coleshill, which is now a centre for economic inclusion Three linkages have been completed between Llanelli and local communities, which include the installation of shared use paths and a new shared use bridge at Penygaer Fields.

What’s on in Llanelli in May With not one but two bank holidays this month taking place on the 6th and 27th of this month, Llanelli has plenty of activities for you to mark in your diary for this May. 4TH MAY: DAWN CHORUS WALK AND BREAKFAST WWT NATIONAL WETLAND CENTRE The Wetland Centre will be holding a guided walk around the grounds especially for you to experience the early birds songs as dawn breaks over the estuary.

Beginning 6am on the dot the Wetland’s expert guide will show you how to recognise and identify the birds you can hear. The tour is two hours long and includes a full cooked breakfast to prepare you for the rest of the day.

4TH MAY: LADIES RACE NIGHT - PARC Y SCARLETS The first Scarlets Ladies Race Night is being held in the Owners and Trainers Bar at Parc y Scarlets. For £30 you will be greeted by a member of the Scarlets squad who will be your drinks server for the night and will escort you to your table.

10TH MAY: SINFONIA CYMRU PRESENTS CLASSIC CONVERSATION - PONTYBEREM MEMORIAL HALL Taking place at 7:30pm in the Pontyberem Memorial Hall, Sinfonia Cymru are showcasing their newest project Classical Conversation. Joined by international maestro Carlo Rizzi and British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, Classical Conversation will have music featuring classic composers Mendelssohn, Schumann, Scriabin and Beethoven. Admission to the concert will be £12 but if you are under the age of 27 then admission will be £4.

Sosban Restaurant Situated at the listed Pumphouse in the developing North Dock of Llanelli you will find an open, warm and bustling restaurant which has recently won the accolade of Restaurant of the Year 2012-2013 with the AA Hospitality Awards and currently holds two rosettes. Brainchild of a collective involving food critic and TV food personality Simon Wright, construction entrepreneur Robert Williams and rugby icons Stephen Jones and Dwayne Peel, the restaurant is headed by local girl Sian Rees who reached great heights in the food world in London, perfecting Sian her craft in some of London’s finest eateries including Claridges, L’escargot and Galvin Bistrot de Luxe. With Sian came partner Ian Wood, renowned in London for plying his trade at Orrery, Almeida and Boundary.

The ethos at Sosban is simple; the produce is sourced locally, the cooking is about flavour and the service is friendly. The á la Carte menu features Penclawdd Shellfish Gratin from the Lougher River, a Tagine of Preseli Bluestone Lamb and a Charcuterie of Cured Meats from the great Trealy Farm in Monmouthshire.

Sosban runs a very reasonably priced set menu of the day for lunch and early evening, named the Sosban Fach Menu.

For wine enthusiasts or even for the novice with a taste for a glass of good wine, Sosban regularly holds wine tastings. Expand your knowledge about the different grapes and vineyards and educate your palate to the differences between a Sauvignon Blanc and a Cabernet Sauvignon accompanied with delicious canopès, open to everyone at the grand total of £10 per person.

Involving the community from welcoming schoolchildren in for a tour of the building and its history followed by cakes and tea, to the charity dinners held at the restaurant to raise money for the great Llanelli charity, the Gravell Trust, Sosban is proud to pay a part in the community. Sosban plans to hold food workshops for local primary schools in the summer to give a greater understanding of food, where it’s sourced from, and how it is transformed into an extravagant dish served in the restaurant.

Llandovery Prep School Llandovery Prep School is bucking the trend and continuing to grow at an unprecedented rate. The independent school has seen a remarkable 40% increase in numbers this year and is getting bigger!
