Luminaries officially open COMPUTEX 2019 looking to the next generation of computing development COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2019 opened on Tuesday with President Tsai Ing-wen praising Taiwan’s ICT industry, noting that the industry totalled US$157 billion in exports per year and served as the engine of Taiwan’s economic growth and a key part of the global supply chain.

“AI is all about fitting the gap between machines and humans to allow us to work together at scale,” Mookerjee said, highlighting advances in AI and how they are being applied in real-world use. “In IBM, we use the word AI slightly differently... We call it augmenting intelligence... It’s about augmenting people to do their jobs better.”

A digital twin also allows for disruption to be simulated, which means its progress can then be monitored, Gerondeau said, adding that because it is virtual, it compresses time and saves on costs because no physical prototype is necessary, and it therefore lowers the requirements for entry into established industries.

The second part of this year’s forum, the AI Session, is scheduled for 9:10 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. today at Room 201 of the Taipei International Convention Center. It is to feature speakers from Arm, NVIDIA, Siemens, Micron, Alibaba Cloud and Google.

The startups include MAIN INFO, which provides a car navigation system that employs a hologram and a motion sensor, and TAKEONE Co., developer of computer game “BTS WORLD” and related exclusive content.

M-Robo delivers investment information solutions using robot journalism in Money-Robo, an investment information curation service for private investors. A robot reporter collects and summarizes diverse information such as corporate disclosures, stock price information and news in real time and delivers the news. Elsewhere, Fin2B operates an accounts receivable discount platform.

SMARTSOUND Corp. aims to provide family healthcare solutions with a smart stethoscope.

BeyondLimit Co. Ltd. is always thinking about going beyond the limit and the result is “ARE,” an augmented-reality puzzle game ideal for children that helps them understand real and fake realities in the fast-paced world of the fourth industrial revolution.

This is the fourth year that South Korea is to feature in InnoVEX. In previous years, a Korean startup signed a memorandum of understanding with a Taiwanese augmented- and virtual-reality content creator to collaborate on program development, while another Korean startup inked an export deal with an Italian sports brand.

Many of the startups attending the event this year come from different regions, such as Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Italy, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

They were selected through Epoch’s SGP — which is in its eighth year — under the strict criteria that they need to be highly marketable in their industry and skilled in solving technology problems. Chosen because of their trend-setting and innovative business models, these startups are considered capable of integrating with Taiwan’s industry and likely to break into the global market at the same time.

Since 2015, SGP — held twice a year — has received over 1,200 applications from 63 countries. So far, 108 international startups have been selected and one-third of them have established collaborations with Taiwan’s leading corporations, attracted investment or set up branches in Taiwan through the Epoch Foundation’s connections.

One of the successful cases is Sorama, which supplies unique high-resolution sound cameras and noise and vibration control services. The Dutch company, which joined the SPG in 2016, has collaborated with more than 10 Taiwanese enterprises and has acquired a market presence in Taiwan and Japan. Just in April, Sorama set up a business partnership with Fluke Corp. to detect compressed air leaks, making it a great example of how Taiwan can serve as Asia’s hub for global startups to make the leap into the Asian market.

A growing trend in POS is to combine computers, facial recognition, and IoT in venues such as shops, supermarkets, restaurants and hotels so that customers can select goods and make payments by interacting with the POS equipment.

At the POS section of COMPUTEX, the biggest booth is that of Shanghai Sunmi Technology Co. Ltd., which manufactures IoT devices but is perhaps best known for its facial-recognition technology.

“We combine facial recognition with Alipay, so that when Alipay members go out without carrying a card and want to buy something or pay for a service, they only have to show their face,” Sunmi Brand and Design Director Hu Xiaowei, said.

To make sure visitors know when and where they can use facial recognition with Alipay, their booth has an LCD monitor wall, as large as a cinema screen, displaying a supermarket, library and other scenes at regular intervals.

One Taiwanese company, Netronix Inc., sells electronic product labels so that stores and supermarkets do not have to put up new labels when goods come in or remove labels when goods sell out.

Their electronic labels are hard to sell in Taiwan but easier to sell in Europe, because manpower is more expensive in Europe than in Taiwan.

“Electronic labels are more expensive than paper labels because they are made with e-paper ... but it holds great future,” said Sean Huang, senior specialist at Netronix’s sales department.

“At department stores and supermarkets, fresh products like fruits and vegetables only have a week’s shelf live. After that you have to cut price and then stop selling them. So, staff members are busy putting up labels and removing them. This is not only a waste of manpower, a waste of time, but also causes environmental

pollution,” he said.

“This is especially important for Japan, which faces a serious problem of an aging population,” he added.

While POS is generally associated with cashiers, checkouts and self-ordering or self-service kiosks, it can also be smartly applied to a bakery.

The POS system made by one Taiwan company makes it easier for a customer to make purchases at a bakery.

The customer picks up the bread or cakes he or she wants to buy, puts the tray under a POS terminal to identify the purchase and show the total price, and then pays the bill.

“When a cashier charges a customer, the cashier taps the names of the purchased goods on the screen of the cashier machine and sometimes makes mistakes. When the POS checks the bread and cakes on a tray and gives the tally, the accuracy is 97 percent correct,” the manufacturer said.

The POS section at COMPUTEX shows systems primarily from Taiwan and China, and that is what lures foreign visitors to COMPUTEX. “COMPUTEX offers a wide range of products from Taiwan and China at competitive prices. I like it very much and have been attending COMPUTEX for several years,” said Ayush Sanghvi, a buyer from Mumbai, India.
