2022 Department Grant Summaries

Dr. Carey Balaban received a grant from Charles River Analytics to perform an evaluation of a technology for objective documentation of mild traumatic brain injury. A clinical trial at the University of Miami assesses 1) sensitivity and specificity of the ADVISOR device in detecting mTBI; 2) reliability of ADVISOR across evaluations; 3) efficacy in detecting mTBI across longer timescales. Dr. Balaban provides expertise in the test selection, study design, data analysis, and report generation.

Dr. Uma Duvvuri received a grant from Medtronic for the further research and development of Medtronic’s proprietary AI-based decision support tools to be used in the development of a laparoscopic visualization system. This multi-phase, multiyear project aims to develop an advanced visualization product that provides real-time monitoring of surgeon performance during the procedure, insight on the optimal use of tools, and guidance to the surgeon in identifying critical anatomic structures and steps during the procedure.

Dr. Chris Cunningham received a grant from the Pennsylvania Lions Hearing Research Foundation, Inc. for his project investigating the role of Wolfram Syndrome associated genes in the cochlea. Wolfram Syndrome is a genetic syndrome that causes hearing loss by an unknown mechanism. For this project, he will investigate the expression and function of Wolfram syndrome-linked genes in the cochlea in order to uncover the pathophysiology of hearing loss in Wolfram Syndrome.

Dr. Thanos Tzounopoulos received a grant from the NIH for his project, Synaptic, Cellular and Circuit Mechanisms of Cortical Plasticity after Cochlear Damage. This project will test several novel hypotheses regarding the mechanisms of auditory cortex plasticity after cochlear damage and peripheral hearing loss. Dr. Tzounopoulos received other grants from the NIH, DOD and Eye & Ear Foundation to help fund his research in creating a pharmacological treatment for tinnitus.

Dr. Michele Insanally received two grants from the NIH for her project entitled The significance of nominally non-responsive neural dynamics in auditory perception and behavior. This project aims to investigate the neural basis of auditory perceptual learning using in vivo electrophysiology, behavior, and optogenetics. The results from the proposed experiments will provide critical insights into improved diagnosis and treatment of hearing deficits caused by disease or injury and will inform targeted therapies for central auditory processing disorders.

Mr. Norman Gottron received a grant from Medtronic for Pittsburgh CREATES for a project Pittsburgh CREATES has engaged with Medtronic over the past year to evaluate and provide feedback on the Mazor robotic guidance system for spinal surgery. CREATES facilitated the evaluation of the platform by hosting a series of cadaver labs in its shared space on the 1st floor of the Eye & Ear Institute.

2022 Department Grant Summaries (continued)

Dr. Ryan Soose received a grant from the National Football League for his project entitled NFL-Brain Health vs Neurodegeneration. This project is a multidisciplinary University of Pittsburgh study of sleep health of NFL veterans with traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Dr. Soose and his team are trying to show that head injuries are likely a complex heterogeneous condition that requires a multidisciplinary evaluation and personalized treatment approach.

Dr. Eric Wang received a grant from the American Academy of Otolaryngology for his project entitled TIL Density and Mutation Burden on ICI Response in Head & Neck Mucosal Melanoma. This project aims to further address the clinical applicability of several biomarkers, which have been identified as potential indicators for response to ICI, in the largest, single-institution cohort of head and neck mucosal melanoma patients to date.

Dr. Ross Williamson received NIH funding for his project entitled Extratelencephalic contributions to auditory categorization. The project will study how deep layers of the auditory cortex gives rise to a major projection system that exerts brain-wide influence over many downstream regions, providing a putative substrate for such behavior. The study will monitor and manipulate this cortical output in awake, behaving mice.

Dr. Bill Yates received a grant from the NIH for his project entitled Multisensory Integration Producing Nausea and Vomiting. This grant intends to determine if electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve can be used to reduce food intake, and/or to treat gastroparesis or other diseases associated with changes in gastric motility.

Dr. Marci Nilsen received a grant from the NIH for her project Sympathetic modulation of head and neck cancer pain. The major goals of this project are 1) to understand impact of stress on oral SCC progression and pain using preclinical animal models and 2) to investigate the prevalence of patientreported pain and psychological symptom burden (e.g., anxiety and depression) pre-treatment and through survivorship.

Research Spotlight: Dr. Angela Mazul

One of Dr. José Zevallos’ goals for the Department of Otolaryngology is one step closer to becoming reality with the addition of Angela Mazul, PhD.

Dr. Mazul will help build a robust epidemiologic and population science research program in head and neck cancer. She will contribute to this by building a large case-control study researching factors associated with head and neck cancer risk, specifically social determinants of health and oral health. She also plans to follow up on the cases to determine how these factors are associated with survival and quality of life during survivorship.

The plan is to ascertain cases as soon as they get diagnosed, so data can be collected on patients before treatment. In casecontrol studies, cases may be more likely to have recall bias due to the cancer diagnosis “muddling” the recall. Thus, the sooner patients can be recruited, the better. Dr. Mazul would

like to extend the recruitment beyond the Pittsburgh Metro area and recruit from other UPMC locations to get a wide variety of patients to represent Western Pennsylvania and rural head and neck cancer patients.

Dr. Mazul has a PhD in cancer epidemiology from UNC Chapel Hill and did her postdoctoral training at Lineberger Cancer Center. She was an Assistant Professor at Washington University, where she got a K01 to look at social and molecular determinants of health in HPV-associated cancer.

Dr. Mazul is excited to come to Pittsburgh. “UPMC has the resources and infrastructure to recruit patients,” she said. “I look forward to merging my K award training with my epidemiologic training in case-control studies to build a population-based study. On a personal note, I have never met a person from Pittsburgh who didn’t rave about the city, so I am eager to check out the city.”
