It is with great pleaasure that I welcome you all to the inaugural Extra Time Cancer Awareness Cup in aid of male cancer support across Plymouth, and one day, the rest of the United Kingdom.

We find ourselves in an odd situation with the lockdown that has affected us all in our various walks of life across the globe. I for one have felt the pinch of changed norms in our communities. I had originally planned for this event to take place in person but as social distancing became the new normal, I found myself increasingly drawn to keeping the event running via online spaces and in digital environments. It was this drive and fascination to keep the event going that led to me the world of FIFA 20, and led you all to this event as you see it today; a virtual matchday experience.

Men of all walks of life deserve a challenging and competitive environment to relax and unwind in, and soon, that is exactly what will be running across Devon, and maybe even the UK. to our TV screens, I would not be lying when I say we are the first to use simulated football matches as a way of bringing our attention to the crucial importance of talking about and fighting male cancer.

This is highly exciting for me, and I am sure it will be highly exciting for you too.

I have worked with some great people on this event over the last 5 months, and the resultant match that you are going to watch today is the final part of that endurance.

It was my aim to bring the liveliness of football to your lounges or kitchens just as the sport we know and love has done for decades on TV. Whilst football has found its way back

So, without further ado, it is my honour to invite you to read through the rest of today’s programme, and to enjoy what I am sure will be an action packed game of the world’s favourite sport.

Prostate cancer is the most common of the male cancers, with around 47.6k men being affected in 2016. This was around 26% of cases of cancers that effected men in the same year. Unlike testicular cancer, PrC is more common in black males. In addition to this, it is also more common in older men than younger men, again contrary to TC. Rates of PrC are estimated to rise by 12% by 2035; 236 new men will be diagnosed with PrC per day.

The danger of prostate cancer is not being diagnosed quickly enough. The cancer only really begins to reveal itself once it has grown large enough to put pressure on the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the penis. These symptoms include weak flow, blood in the urine, feeling like you’ve not finished weeing, and irregular frequent needs to urinate. These symptoms however do not necessarily indicate that you have cancer, as a common condition known as prostate enlargement is also common. Additionally, back and bone pain, pain in the testicles and unexplained loss in weight can also indicate that you have a spreading cancer.

There are three forms of treatment: Watchful waiting is used for men who are unlikely to see their natural life affected by the cancer, but want to remain vigilant. If the cancer progresses, then active surveillance aims to avoid unnecessary treatment whilst providing help for men with the usage of MRI scans, PSI tests and biopsies to help them work out whether movement onto therapy and treatment is necessary, and what routes to take.

The main treatment for early stage PrC is radical prostatectomy, a process of removing the prostate.

There are numerous other treatments like brachytherapy, cryotherapy, and in extreme cases, chemotherapy.

good news of course doesn’t mean our work is done though.

There is still so much to do in terms of underfunded male health support systems in the UK, and we can always do more to educate men on the dangers of male cancer.

There is good news however!

The mortality rate from Prostate Cancer is expected to drop by 16% by 2035. In addition, 84% of men in England and Wales are expected to survive for 10 or more years, and when caught at its earliest stage, all men are expected to survive for 5 or more years.

Overall, survival of PrC has tripled in the last 40 years in the UK due to PSA testing so we’re an at all time high for surivival rates of PrC. This

Check each testicle by rolling them between your fingers and thumb gently but throughly. thoroughly.

According to the NHS, “cancer of the testicles is one of less common cancers and tends to mostly affect men between 15-49 years of age.”

Testicular cancer is rare since it only makes up for around 1% of male cancers are testicular, and this translates to about 2300 cases a year. Testicular cancer is also particularly unusual in the regard that it affects younger males, and in particular, those of white ethnicity. Rates of testicular cancer have roughly doubled since the mid 1970s and it is currently unclear as to why this is so. As such, more research is needed.

When we break down types of testicular cancer, we see that there are more common forms of it than others. The most common type is germ cell, which makes up for 95% of cases. “Germ cells are a type of cell that the body uses to produce sperm.” Germ cell cancer reacts well to chemotherapy generally. Less common types include Leydig cell tumours, and Sertoli cell tumours.

These types of tumour make

up for 1-3% and 1% of testicular cancer respectively.

The outlook for testicular cancer is overwhelmingly positive.

It is one of the most treatable forms of cancer. Treatment almost always involves the removal of the affected testicle, but this does not mean that there will be an effect on male fertility, or the ability to have sex; this treatment is known as orchidectomy. Chemo can be used as treatment to seminous cancers, but not non-seminous forms like those seen in 4045% of germ cell tumours. As a result of treatment, England and Wales are fortunate enough to see almost every man survive a year or more post diagnosis, and 98% live for five years or more post diagnosis. Additionally, it is rare for germ cell tumours to return more than five years later.

Some males don’t suffer any symptoms sometimes, and the cancers are found during tests for other conditions or during regular medical scans for check ups.

Even though TC is so easily treatable comparatively to other forms of cancer that are out there, and has an impressive survival rate, for the men who go through it or face the reality that they could develop it later on, it is a serious issue. Furthermore, it is because of how well we have fought against it that men need to be made aware of just how not alone they are, and we should encourage them to come get checked without fear of any stigma surrounding their cancers.

Symptoms of TC include, but are not necessarily limited to, lumps and swelling in the testicles (orchiditis), breast growth and soreness, low back pain, belly pain, epyditimitis, and abnormally early puberty.

Most commonly affecting men over the age of 50, penile cancer is one of the rarer forms of cancer. The type of penile cancer can vary depending on the cells in which the cancer forms. Melanoma of the penis, squamos cell, adenocarcinoma, and carcinoma in situ are the four most commonly seen types in men.

smoking as the chemicals found in cigarettes are believed to be linked to damaging cells in the penis. Finally, men should get themselves checked for the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), of which there are more than 200 types. Men can avoid some variants of HPV by wearing condoms during sex and maintaining penis hygeine.

Symptoms of penile cancer are often highly visible, but the symptoms don’t always mean you have cancer. These include, phimosis of the foreskin (that means pulling it back is made more difficult), bleeding from the penis, foul smelling discharge, change in colour on the penis, rashes, and sores that don’t seem to be healing after 4 or more weeks of forming.

Surgery is usually fairly simple for some cases, such as those affecting skin cells only like CIS, and involves using either a chemotherapy cream or some kind of laser surgery. For later stage cancers, a doctor may suggest surgery, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy as a way to beat the cancer. Penile cancer surgery involves the removal of the cancerous cells from the skin, and using skin and muscle from elsewhere in the body to create a functioning penis.

It is hard to find a sure way of avoiding penile cancer, but it is believed that regular cleaning of the foreskin with warm water helps as it removes bacterial and viral invaders.

In addition, one should stop

preserve as much tissue as is possible in each case.

Fortunately, with only 630 cases a year in the UK, penile cancer is very rare. It is also a slow growth cancer so more than 70% of those who are diagnosed with a form of penile cancer survive, and only 1% of cancer deaths are linked to penile cancer.

The issues arise in the time it takes men to get their penis checked by the GP or a doctor, and that it is why it is even more important for us to talk about penile cancer.

The Chestnut Appeal Getting involved with male health in Plymouth.

Extra Time has been working very closely with The Chestnut Appeal since December 2019 to ensure that it does all that it can to continue the hard and important work that is carried in the field of male health in Devon.

The Chestnut Appeal has held swimming events and footy events, amongst many other things, so it was with great pleasure that I invited David Squires from The Chesnut Appeal to play in today’s match.

He will be found in the Centre Midfield, just in behind the strikers, in the number eight shirt.

The Chestnut Appeal supports the very latest in treatments and technology that wouldn’t be available without community fundraising. The charity relies on donations from the public.

The Chestnut Appeal was founded in 1999 at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth and has since gone on to be at the forefront of prostate cancer care across the region of Devon.

The Chestnut Appeal believes that it is vital to get more men talking about their health and taking action when they feel like something could be wrong.

The success of the

Men’s Health has suffered an imbalance in funding and support and at the core of the Chestnut Appeal’s work is to highlight the most common cancer in men whilst also raising awareness of Testicular Cancer and Penile Cancer, two other quite treatable cancers that sadly if left can be devastating.

Chestnut Appeal is a testament to what can be achieved when working together as a community. To continue to ensure men’s health is talked about, that the South West corner of the UK isn’t forgotten about and, that that we’re able to attract the very best technologies to the area.

Extra Time is a super project that will play out on the FIFA 20 format with the aim to help spread awareness of male cancers.

Originally planned to include a walking football

event, the move to virtual football still has the opportunity to make a real impact.

Creating virtual players from the likeness of patients and local amateur footballers will make for an interesting finale.

Extra Time is a great campaign and really hits the right notes. Its something that I think has potential to make men stand up and think. Football still has the opportunity to make a real impact in Plymouth.

THE

KEVIN BEATTIE FOUNDATION Thomas Kevin Beattie. The Beat. Ipswich Town’s infamous number six played for the Blues 224 times, scoring 24 goals in the process, and in doing so, he made his name as a club legend that still stands the test of modern standards.

A player of such presence at the heart of Ipswich’s defence as Kevin Beattie remains a talking point amongst blues fans, old and new. Fans successfully raised enough money to pay for a Beattie statue outside the stadium at Portman Road that he helped roar with victory countless times in domestic and European games, and also against fierce rivals such as F.C. Barcelona, Manchester United, and Real Madrid.

Malcolm Thompson is the founder of the Kevin Beattie Foundation. The Foundation is named after the legendary England defender who died in September 2018, aged 64 years old.

“The Foundation’s aims are to help various charitable organisations such as those involved with the NHS, Motor Neurone Disease and MS, plus many local causes,” Malcom told me 14 - Extra, Extra

when I spoke to him about taking part in the Extra Time Cancer Awareness Cup. Of particular note is that the KBF will be raising money for Prostate Cancer UK in its work. It is for this reason that Extra Time invited Malcolm to join the match as a virtual player.

To set the Foundation up, Malcolm is planning to walk from Carlisle, where the Beat was born, to Ipswich, when lockdown is over.

The huge trek spans over 330 miles. Plus, he will be holding an Evening with Jim Magilton and Matt Holland later in the year.

Just as Kevin Beattie once stood in for Michael Caine on the set of the film, Escape to Victory, Malcolm will be standing in for Kevin Beattie in today’s game by wearing the No. 6 shirt on the pitch. A fine tribute to a fine player and a fine chap.

Today’s matchday commentator is Matt Atkinson. Matt is a true football fan, following his team, Reading, through the highs of the Premier League, and the lows of the Championship. In Matt’s Match this issue, Matt walks us through what it was like attending his first game as a young lad in 2005, and how it impacted him.

In the 2005/06 season, I was turning six years old.

At this age, I’d been playing football for about a year, and I’d loved every second of it.

Being a Reading lad born and raised, I was somewhat aware that Reading had a local team, but didn’t follow them properly. My dad’s side of the family were all from Middlesbrough (who were ACTUALLY in the Premier League back then), so the only people talking about football around me were fans

of a team which they were trying to steer me towards supporting.

However, Reading had their promotion winning campaign that season in the Championship, earning 106 points, a record that still stands today. To celebrate, Reading FC ran a promotion for children in my local primary schools who were all turning six that season. We got the opportunity to go to a match for free, meet some players, and got a special replica kit too.

Even at my young age, I remember the feelings of excitement and anticipation as we got on the bus that would take us from our little town on the outskirts straight into the heart of Reading. These feelings grew and grew, and even today these feelings have never changed - the walk up to the ground, going through the turn-

stiles, then walking through the concrete entrances and hearing the sound come pouring in as I stepped out into the stands.

The game itself was what I’d describe nowadays as a ‘typical Reading’ performance. It ended goalless, but that didn’t matter to me. Hearing the chants; the cheers, meeting Reading’s own ‘Full Kit W*nker’ for the first time, and seeing people from all walks of life come together for ninety minutes - THAT was what stuck with me. I’ve found that I don’t even need to be watching Reading - attending any match, no matter which end I’m in, no matter which team I’m supporting, it’s always the same.

Matchdays bring with them something magical, and you’re part of a massive shared experience for the next ninety minutes. That is something football has given me, which nothing else has.

HOME Custom designed for today’s simulated football match by Excessive Noise, the bright orange and dark blue kit aims to be a sleek contemporary take on the football kit by using minimalist design in the usage of Extra Time’s branding, and its colour placement.

The repeated Extra Time pattern visible on the front of the shirt adds a little bit of style to the classic solid colour jersey that has been so popular in the past with many teams before such as greats like Real Madrid or Liverpool. The final touch to the front design is the placement of the Extra Time logo that allows players and fans alike to enjoy the smooth design of the shirts.

On the back of the shirt, we find practicality sublimated onto the design of the shirts as the bold dark blue numbering and lettering will allow our stars to remain visible on the pitch and in action replays during inevitable entertaining moments of the game.

In addition to the lettering and numbering design, very subtle embroidering of the number ‘120’ can be found on back of the shirt. The aim of this little touch to reinforce the idea that, with a little bit of support and awareness on the issues surrounding male cancer in the United Kingdom, we can give men the chance to enjoy a little extra time away from cancer.

AWAY Today’s away shirts have also been designed by Excessive Noise, and offer variation to the Home designs by acting as a call back to timeless striped football kits that we have come to know and love. You will be able to spot today’s away side by watching out for dark blue and light blue kits on the pitch.

Not only is the light blue and dark blue combo easy to differentiate on your screens, but the light blue signifies the importance of male cancer support and awareness.

Whilst the shirt is predominantly a classic design, twist has been added to the clean, bold stripes by emulating the look of the classic England 1990 shirt. We don’t often see horizontally placed logos in the heights of the World Cup or the Premier League nowadays, so that is exactly why Excessive Noise has done the brave thing of bringing it right back.

Much like the Home shirt, our players will be clear and visible because of the lettering design for today’s game. Their names and numbers are emblazened on the back of their shirts in bright orange, a colour that is easily distinguishable on the backdrop of blue.

A personal touch has been added to the Away shirts, much like the Home shirts’ 120.

The quote, “blow the whistle on male cancer,” can be seen stitched into the back of the collar to remind our players and audience alike that there is an end to male cancer, and that it can be found with teamwork, awareness, and funding.

In charge between the sticks for Extra XI in today’s game, Brad Sandford will be sure to pull off some excellent parries.

Brad showed great promise in the warm up games leading up to today’s event. His impressive record included 3 clean sheets from 10 games, and Brad conceded just 11 goals which helped his side win 3 of their games, and draw a further 5.

Brad stands at 6 foot 1, which makes him one of the tallest men on the pitch beaten only by 3 other players, two of which are on his team. As such, you can expect the goalie to come flying out for some mid-air catches, or pulling off full stretch dives to the corners of the goal to stop some of the fine eyes for goal that will be on the pitch today.

When he isn’t playing football (or golf, for that matter), Brad is a graphic designer, and studies at Plymouth College of Art. Brad is a Liverpool fan, so he hopes to bring some of Liverpool’s Premier League success to today’s game. Can he channel his inner Alisson and bring victory to his side? Only time will tell for sure.

Chris Constable will be representing the speed and agility of Time XI’s left wing today by playing forward in TXI’s 4-3-3 formation.

He should be well suited here as a man who loved getting stuck in with his Naval rugby.

In the warm up games, Chris scored two impressive goals from outside the box, so definitely stay tuned and you might just see more of the same this time round. In addition to these fine goals, Chris was seen picking up a Man of the Match award in one of the games.

Chris is 5’8, which makes him perfect for sprinting down the wing and crossing balls in.

It also makes him equally as equipped to cut inside and make darting, skillful runs towards the opposition goal.

Chris was born in Chesterton, and supports Cambridge City as a result. This is much to his grandson’s (Marcus Rees) disgust as a Cambridge United fan. Chris was diagnosed with testicular cancer, but was fortunate enough to get tested and keep it under control. That’s why he is involved in today’s match for male cancer awareness.

Coming all the way from Budapest, Hungary, Robert Bartfay is a lethal striker who really shone in the warm up games prior to today’s game. He scored an incredible 6 goals for Time XI from all areas of the box, and even assisted a further goal too.

Robert’s stats will speak for themselves, and they will be proven to be accurate on the pitch too. At 5 foot 11, Robert has a blend of strength and dexterity with the ball so he will prove to be a worthy opponent for any defenders in his way. Maybe he can pick up another MOTM award today as well, just as he did in one of the warm up games. Robert’s finishing and power are more than enough to rip the netting off of any goalposts around, and this makes him perfect from the spot should any rogue tackles present themselves in the form of a penalty today. Robert will be seen up front as TXI’s main striker, taking a center forward position. This is perfect for a football loving personal trainer.

Robert supports Juventus, and will be wearing the number seven shirt today. Does he remind you of a certain Christiano Ronaldo perhaps? Hmm?

Kieran HURRELL

Kieran Hurrell has been key to his side in recent games, and due to his experience as a footballer and a rugby player, it is clear to see why that is the case.

With four goals and three assists, Kieran has been directly involved with half of the goals that Extra XI have scored in their warm up games; than any other player on his team, and joint first with Robert Bartfay of Time XI. He also managed to pick up a deserved Man of the Match award for an 8.9 performance in the warm up sessions that took place.

It would be surprising if we didn’t see him getting another goal or another assist this game as well.

Strength, speed, and dribbling will be on full display down the right wing today, and Kieran might prove too much to handle for Time XI right back, Joseph Denton.

After playing for 26 years at various levels of football, including high standard 11-a-side, Kieran is ready to get stuck in today. Number 14 is the number that Kieran chose to wear for today’s game so keep your eyes open for him on the pitch.

Orrin Yaniv comes into today’s Extra XI squad wearing the number 6 shirt in a center defensive midfield position. Orrin has been a dark horse for Extra XI recently, having set up two crucial goals, and scoring one. This is even face of his less attacking presence.

Even though there are numerous players on the pitch taller than him, Orrin has been seen not only leaping into headers, but winning them too. This bravery in the air will be crucial to running the midfield like clockwork, and has been key to victories for his team in the last few matches.

Other notable skills for Orrin include utilising his weak foot, like he did against the University of Chichester in his life beyond Extra Time’s Cancer Awareness Cup, and also his vision and positioning. Don’t be surprised if we see him holding his ground and creating chances from the back.

Excelling in the warm up games is no new feat for Orrin, who has had success with the University of Portsmouth side, and who has even met Frank Lampard. It seems success is just daily life for our number 6.

Bob Sprague has been so reliable in the warm up games, that you could set your watch on his guess at the time. Linking up with Chris Constable on the other wing, and Robert Bartfay at the front, Bob has bagged himself two assists.

Bob’s off the ball work is just as impressive as when he is on it. With the level of pressure he has been putting on Extra XI left back, George Poole, you’d think that Bob was actually a naturalised full back instead of the right wing position he has adopted for the team in all of the recent games.

Something that’s become glaringly apparent is Bob’s ability to pick out a cross in tense situations.
