Exton Angus, based at Haden Qld (40km north of Toowoomba), was established in 2012 by Tim & Vicki Schmaling, as a direct result of Tim’s passion for genetics and Angus cattle. As the years go on, we have become more and more grateful for the lifestyle we have created and the future we are building for our two sons, Jacob (9) and Luke (7).
We took a massive leap last year and held our first on-farm sale – something we had worked towards for many years. We were totally blown away and overwhelmed by the support we received and are excited to welcome everyone back again. Even if you aren’t buying a bull this year, we would still love to see you on sale day. It paced world and we fully understand how hard it is to ‘get to everything so we are grateful to everyone for taking the time to be a part of our journey (and for allowing us to be a part of yours!).
Over the past year, we have faced a few challenges which we didn’t see coming. We lost Tim’s Grandfather mid last year and had been planning on purchasing his farm which we had leased for 12 years. Unfortunately things didn’t go our way and we had to look for another lease block. The universe took care of us (as it always seems to) and we now have a secure long-term lease closer to home. Although this wasn’t how we wanted things to pan out, we will be forever grateful to Grandad for providing us with the incredible opportunity of borrowing the Schmaling Family farm.
We have also had many memorable moments, with our boys becoming more active in the day-to-day runnings of the farm. Along with local shows, a few cattle youth camps have been attended, giving Tim some much-needed quality time with the kids. Trying to find that balance between work and play isn’t always easy, but it is something we have been working on!
As a Stud, we focus on breeding cattle with a strong maternal base – meaning fertility, foot quality and udder set all coming together for better longevity with maternal instinct and intelligence that cannot be selected with ESTIMATED breeding values. Good temperament in our cattle is also non-negotiable. This is reflected in our line-up of bulls again this year, which will go on to breed the same traits.
Our bulls have been prepared on a silage ration, consisting of oaten silage, hay and a small amount of grain – same preparation as our bulls last year. They also run on approximately 50 acres of pasture in the hills to keep them fit and healthy, which we believe gives them an advantage for when they are put out to work.
The relationship doesn’t end when you purchase a bull from us – it’s just the beginning. Our favourite part of this business is making connections and keeping in touch with our clients and their successes.
See you at the sale!
Tim, Vicki, Jacob & Luke Schmaling

As with any animal, it’s important to plan ahead to ensure your new investment settles in well. Give your new bull time to adapt to their new environment before commencing their working life. Use new bulls in either single-sire groups or with young bulls their own age and size. If a number of young bulls are to be used together, run them together for a few weeks before joining starts. They sort out their pecking order quickly and have fewer problems later. A young bull is an easy target for a mature bull, so it’s best to keep them apart, especially when putting them into a paddock with cycling females.
During mating:
• Check bulls regularly, at least twice each week for the first 2 months. Get up close to them and watch each bull walk; check for swellings around the sheath and for lameness.
• Have a spare bull or bulls available to replace any that break down. Replace any suspect bull immediately.
• Angus bulls will either fight or work - rotating bulls and minimising bull power out with females is a great management tool. It help to minimise injury, any fertility issues and can increase libidos. Rotate bulls 2-4 weeks into the breeding season. Single -sire joining works well, but it has risks.
Bulls are a large investment for your program and they have a major effect on herd fertility. A little time and attention to make sure they are fit, free from disease and actively working is well worthwhile.
Thank you for being a part of our journey!
