Habéis tenido que esperar mucho tiempo, pero por fin estas vacaciones (de verano) bien merecidas están allí. Hora de disfrutar sin preocupaciones porque, para parafrasear el famoso eslogan, vosotros lo valéis. Para hacer eso sin preocupaciones aquí os damos unos cuantos consejos.

You have been waiting for it for a long time, but that well deserved (summer) holiday in Alicante is now finally here. Time to enjoy yourselves because, to paraphrase that famous tagline, you are worth it. To do so in a carefree manner we hereby give you a few useful tips.

Jullie hebben er lang op moeten wachten, maar eindelijk is die welverdiende (zomer)vakantie in Alicante daar. Tijd om te genieten want, om die beroemde slogan te parafraseren, jullie zijn het waard. Om dat zorgeloos te kunnen doen geven we jullie bij deze enkele nuttige tips.

¿Venís en coche, tal vez alquilado en El Altet?

No vayáis demasiado cargados, no pongáis equipaje en los asientos traseros, y optad en lugar de eso por una baca o un portaequipaje en el techo. Comprobad que no ande nada suelto y que la vista del retrovisor no esté obstruida. El calor también afectará la presión de vuestros neumáticos, comprobadla por tanto de antemano y respetad las instrucciones del fabricante para este procedimiento. Respetad también nuestras normas de velocidad: 120 km/ hora para los turismos en la autopista y 90 km/ hora en las carreteras interurbanas normales, o respectivamente 90 y 80 km/hora si manejáis un motorhome o si arrastráis un remolque.

Will you be coming by car, perhaps renting one at El Altet? Ensure you do not pack it too heavily, put no luggage on the passenger seats, and opt for a rack or top carrier instead.

Also ascertain nothing can move around and that you have an unobstructed view of the rear mirror. Even if you have air conditioning, we recommend you only drive around during the cooler moments of the day. The Spanish heat will also affect your tire pressure, checking it beforehand is therefore mandatory following the manufacturer’s instructions for that purpose. You also ought to respect the speed limits: 120 km/ hour for ordinary cars on the motorway and 90 km/hour on ordinary intercity roads, or respectively 90 and 80 km/ hour when travelling with a caravan or a motorhome.

Kom je met de auto, misschien gehuurd op El Altet? Zorg ervoor dat je niet te zwaar beladen bent, plaats geen bagage op de passagierszetels, en kies liever voor een drager of rek voor het dak. Zorg er ook voor dat er niets los zit en dat het zicht op de achteruitspiegel niet belemmerd wordt. Zelfs als je wagen uitgerust is met airco is het aan te raden je op frisse momenten van de dag te verplaatsen.

De Spaanse hitte zal ook de druk op je banden beïnvloeden, controleer ze daarom vooraf en volg de instructies van de fabrikant hiervoor.

Respecteer ook onze snelheidsnormen: 120 km/u voor gewone wagens op de autostrade en 90 km/u op de gewone baan, of respectievelijk 90 en 80 km/u als je met een caravan of motorhome onderweg bent.

Una vez llegados a la playa, enseñad a vuestros hijos a respetar las banderas y a avisaros cuándo se vayan a bañar: roja significa prohibido bañarse, amarrilla sed precavidos, y verde baño permitido. Si la corriente está fuerte, debéis nadar hacia los lados para libraros de ella para volver en cuánto os hayáis liberado de ella. ¿Vais a practicar deportes acuáticos?

Nunca sin el chaleco a medida y siempre con todas las medidas de seguridad. Tampoco deberíais trepar por los acantilados o asomaros demasiado por los bordes. ¿Buscáis una foto soleada de una vista del mar o un autorretrato?

Abundan los miradores oficiales desde dónde podéis hacerlos en total seguridad- ¡hay 15 solamente en Jávea!

Once on the beach, teach your children to heed the flags and to warn you when they go swimming: red means bathing is strictly forbidden, yellow means they ought to be careful, and green is all clear. If faced by strong currents, the best thing to do is swimming to the left or right and then to return once freed from it. If you will be practicing water sports, never do so without the right size lifejackets and the appropriate safety measures. Would you like to take a sun-soaked photo of a sea view or a selfie? There are abundant official vantage points from which to safely do so- Javea alone has 15 of them in!

Staat er een sterke stroming, dan zwemmen jullie best naar links of rechts om één maal ervan bevrijd terug te komen. Gaan jullie het water op? Nooit zonder passende reddingsvesten en de toepasselijke veiligheidsmaatregelen. Ook rotsen beklimmen of te dicht bij de rand komen is uit de boze. Een zonovergoten foto van een zeezicht of een selfie? Er zijn overal voldoende officiële uitkijkpunten om dit veilig te doenalleen al in Javea zijn er 15!

Pero ojo, esto no reemplaza un seguro de asistencia de viaje propiamente dicho.

Drinking enough, sun cream and lotion against ultraviolet radiation are indispensable, also when you are in the mountains, just like a proper hat with neck protection and UV-filter, shoes and sunglasses.

If you go hiking, climb taking short steps, and pack an extra powerbank. If you are from the European Economic Area, requesting a European Health Insurance card in your country of origin might be useful for easy access to medically necessary care and refunds if needed. Do consider that this is no substitute for proper travel insurance.

Voldoende drinken, zonnecrème en bescherming tegen ultraviolette straling zijn onontbeerlijk, ook in de bergen, net zoals een degelijke hoed met nekbescherming en UV-filter, toepasselijke schoenen en zonnebril.

Gaan jullie op wandeltocht, stijg met korte stappen, en neem voldoende water en een extra lader mee. Indien jullie afkomstig zijn uit de Europese Economische Ruimte kan het nuttig zijn om vooraf in uw thuisland een Europese Ziekteverzekeringskaart aan te vragen om desnoods vlot toegang kunnen krijgen tot medisch noodzakelijke zorg en terugbetalingen achteraf. Let wel, dit is geen vervanging voor een volwaardige reisbijstandsverzekering.

Alicante os ofrece muchos productos de calidad que también son aptos para la barbacoa, así en verano ofrecemos alcachofas, acelgas, tomates, pepinos, cebollas, pimientos y calabacines, así como uvas de moscatel, melocotones, nectarinas, sandías, higos y ciruelas. Refrescados con una horchata (bebida lactosa a base de chufa) o con un tinto de verano (un vino tinto mezclado con gaseosa).

If you also want to eat healthy, Alicante offers you many quality products that also combine well with a barbecue: in the summertime, artichokes, leaf beets, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, peppers and zucchinis. But also fruit such as muscatel grapes, peaches, nectarines, water melons, figs, and plums.

Refresh yourself with a horchata (milk beverage based on tiger nuts) or a tinto de verano (red wine mixed with white lemonade).

Alicante biedt je heel wat kwaliteitsproducten die je ook op de barbecue kan gebruiken: zo kan je in de zomer artisjokken, snijbieten, tomaten, komkommers, ajuinen, paprikas en courgetten in de rekken vinden, maar ook fruit zoals moscateldruiven, perziken, nectarines, watermeloen, vijgen, en pruimen. Geniet van een horchata (melkdrank op basis van tijgerdrank) of een tinto de verano (rode wijn aangelengd met witte limonade).

Si eres extranjero, tal vez te sorprenda que contamos con dos lenguas oficiales: el valenciano y el castellano. Si has venido para quedarte, te invito a que aprendas ambos para que puedas disfrutar leyendo tanto a María Beneyto como a Miguel Hernández. Ya que probablemente acabarás dando prioridad al castellano, a continuación, te explicaré tres términos típicamente alicantinos con la letra ‘C’. ¡Seguramente no los verás en una clase de ‘español como lengua extranjera’!

If you are a foreigner, you might be surprised to discover that we have two official languages: Valencian and Castilian. If you have come here to stay, I invite you to learn both so you can enjoy reading both the works of María Beneyto and those of Miguel Hernández. Since you are likely to give priority to Castilian, I will hereafter teach you three typical terms associated with Alicante that you are unlikely to learn in any ‘Spanish as a foreign language’ class!

Als u een buitenlander bent dan verbaast het u misschien dat er hier twee officiële talen zijn: het Valenciaans en het Castiliaans. Una cala es una playa de dimensiones muy reducidas entre las rocas, formada por la erosión del agua del mar en la costa. No es fácil acceder a ellas, muchas veces hay que bajar un poco y dejar atrás el vehículo. Pero valen la pena si eres un amante del buceo; de los paisajes naturales y de las aguas transparentes. Hay muchas calas por toda nuestra costa. Aunque su existencia y localización no son ningún secreto, no te voy a recomendar ninguna en especial. Después de todo, al permitir mayor privacidad, parte del placer consiste en descubrirlas.

An infinite amount of songs celebrate the beach, but if you truly want to enjoy the Mediterranean, then you ought to opt for a cala. A cala is a very small beach confined within the rocks that has been formed as a result of the seawater’s erosion of the coastline.

They are not easy to access, often it is necessary to descend a little and to leave your vehicle behind to reach them. But they are well worth it if you are fond of snorkelling, natural landscapes and transparent waters. There are many calas spread along our coastline. Even though their existence and location are not secret, I will not recommend you any specific ones. As they offer a greater degree of privacy, part of the joy they offer consists, after all, in discovering them.

Het strand wordt bezongen in ontelbare liedjes, maar als u daadwerkelijk van de Middellandse Zee wilt genieten, kies dan voor een cala. Een ‘cala’ is een strand zeer beperkte omvang gevat tussen de rotsen, gevormd door de erosie van de kust door het zeewater. Ze zijn niet gemakkelijk toegankelijk, vaak moet u wat afdalen en uw voertuig op de weg achterlaten. Maar ze zijn de moeite waard indien u van snorkelen, van natuurlijke landschappen en van doorzichtige wateren houdt. Er zijn er vele langs onze kustlijn.

Ondanks het feit dat hun bestaan en ligging niet geheim zijn ga ik u er wel geen in het bijzonder aanbevelen. Aangezien ze een groter niveau aan privaatheid bieden bestaat een gedeelte van het plezier er immers in ze te ontdekken.

Una coca es un pastel redondo que puede ser tanto dulce como salado (en nuestro caso sería salado), con relleno, en Alicante lo suele llevar por arriba. Las hay de todos los tamaños y sabores imaginables, pero siempre son un auténtico trabajo artesano, y por lo tanto, de amor. Las encontrarás en las panaderías tradicionales, o entre la selección de tapas de las cafeterías y bares. La alicantina por excelencia es la de atún y cebolla, que es muy típica de las fiestas de San Juan.

A coca is a round pastry that can either be sweet or savoury (here in Alicante savoury is the norm) with a filling, in Alicante usually on top. They come in all flavours and sizes you can think of, but they are always handmade, and therefore, made with love. You can find them in the traditional bakeries or among the tapas’ selection in the bars and coffee shops. The one most associated with Alicante has a tuna and onion filling and is typical of the festivities of San Juan.

Indien u bezorgt bent dat één van onze heerlijke rijstgerechten nuttigen niet geschikt is voor of na het baden, probeer eens één of verschillende in papier gewikkelde coca’s in uw rugzak mee te nemen. Een coca is een ronde gevuld koek die zowel zoet als hartig kan zijn (in Alicante hartig), in Alicante ligt de vulling normaal gezien erbovenop. Ze komen in alle denkbare groottes en smaken, maar ze zijn altijd handgemaakt, en daarom met liefde. U kan ze terugvinden in de traditionele bakkerijen, of in de tapas selectie van koffiesalons en bars. De Alicantinese variant bij uitstek is die met tonijn en ui, die zeer typisch is voor de feesten van San Juan.

Quizás habrás visto en las noticias como cada año, en la noche del día de este santo, nos gusta encender hogueras en la playa, y luego disfrutar saltándolas en compañía de amigos como si de un obstáculo inofensivo se tratase. Esa misma noche, en la capital de la provincia, celebramos también la Cremá. La Cremá- o quemada- es la culminación de las fiestas por excelencia de la ciudad (y también de las Fallas en Valencia). Es el momento dónde prendemos el fuego en turno a las figuras y paisajes de cartón artísticos que con tanto esfuerzo hemos construido en las calles y barrios de la ciudad. Es un momento mágico y único que no debería faltar en tu lista de experiencias por vivir.

Vale, lo confieso- cremá es un término valenciano. Pero ¿a qué te habrá ayudado a entendernos un poco mejor a nosotros los alicantinos, afortunados habitantes de la mejor tierra del mundo?

You may have seen in the news how every year, at night during this saint’s day, we like to lit campfires on the beach, and then enjoy jumping over them with our friends as if they were just an innocent obstacle. That same night we also celebrate the Cremá in the province’s capital. The Cremá – or burning- is the climax of the city’s greatest festivities (and also that of the Fallas in Valencia). It is the moment we set the cardboard figures and landscapes erected with such much effort in the streets and neighbourhoods across town on fire, one after another. It is a magical and unique moment that should be on your bucket list.

Alright, I confess-cremá is Valencian. But has not it helped you to get understand us the people from Alicante a little better, lucky inhabitants of the best region in the world?

Misschien heeft u al op het nieuws gezien hoe we ieder jaar, in de nacht van deze heilige zijn feestdag, graag een kampvuur op het strand maken en daar dan in het gezelschap van vrienden overspringen alsof het over een gewoon obstakel gaat. Tegelijkertijd vieren we in het kapitaal van de provincie ook de Cremá.

De Cremá- of verbranding- is het hoogtepunt van de feesten per uitstek van de stad (en ook die van de Fallas in Valencia). Het is het moment waarop we, elk op hun beurt, de artistieke figuren en landschappen in karton die we met zoveel moeite in de straten en wijken van de stand hebben gebouwd, in brand steken. Het is een magisch en uniek moment die in uw lijst van ervaringen om mee te maken niet mag ontbreken.

OK, ik beken- cremá is eigenlijk een Valenciaans woord. Maar heeft het u nu niet geholpen om wij de inwoners van Alicante een beetje beter te begrijpen, gelukkigen afkomstig uit de beste streek ter wereld?

“El arte nace de la mente y crece con el talento de las manos” Una frase maravillosa que sirve para describir el trabajo que surge en esta acogedora tienda ubicada en el número 9 de la calle mayor en Altea, Alicante; arte.

El arte es la expresión del alma, de los sentimientos, de los gustos y del pensamiento, es una de las formas más puras de hacer cosas que expresen más que muchas palabras. Ya sea con un lienzo, un cuadro, una escultura, algún instrumento musical, un video, una imagen o, como en el caso de la tienda Tanit, con simples materiales básicos reciclados, se puede plasmar lo que nazca en cada persona, y eso es maravilloso.

Resulta bastante interesante cómo es que este lugar ha logrado mantenerse desde 1989, y antes de responder a la pregunta “¿Cómo?” decidimos ponernos en contacto con el señor Víctor Rovira, el dueño y fundador del lugar, para intentar averiguar la respuesta a dicha pregunta.

Ahora bien, tras una breve entrevista con el caballero, se le realizaron varias preguntas que pudiesen descubrir dicho secreto, a lo que él respondió de la siguiente manera:

¿De dónde nace su trabajo? “Del ingenio, la imaginación y la creatividad porque estas son tres cosas cuyos topes te los pones tú mismo y con lo que puedes hacer lo que sea”.

¿Qué cree que ha hecho subsistir su negocio todo este tiempo? “La confianza entre nosotros y hacia los clientes, que entren y no se sientan en una tienda más”. ¿Qué tiene de innovador o diferente el sitio? “Tenemos diseños propios, pero también buscamos conectar con los clientes de varias maneras, hacemos también reparaciones de las cosas que nos traen y hacemos lo que nos pidan. También reutilizamos las cosas que parece que no sirvan y es un negocio donde realizamos artículos de decoración para el hogar con productos naturales, trabajamos con plata o cualquier otro mineral, además de utilizar técnicas de bisutería…”

Destacando las respuestas a las preguntas planteadas, logramos darnos cuenta de que muchas veces los logros pueden encontrarse en cosas que pueden parecer muy básicas a primera vista, pero ¿Se han sentado alguna vez a pensar o reflexionar sobre cómo es que cualquier cosa se puede realizar a partir de la imaginación, de la creatividad y de las ganas de hacer algo? Si nunca se han tomado el tiempo para hacer dicha reflexión, los invito a que tomen un pequeño momento y lo hagan.

Pero volviendo al tema, de algo podemos estar seguros y es que este negocio juega muy bien con una aliada muy poderosa, la imaginación, ya que esta es la que ayuda a los trabajadores a encontrar el mejor camino para realizar un nuevo producto o para transformar las ideas que traigan sus clientes en realidad. Y es por eso por lo que me refiero a los trabajadores de esta tienda como “artistas”.

Y bueno, para concluir, me gustaría decir que la tienda Tanit es muy interesante y original, porque aquí no solo vas a encontrar creaciones artesanales creativas, este también es un sitio donde podrías ver nacer alguna de tus propias ideas; y si en dado caso se te dificulta explicar lo que deseas, los trabajadores de aquí buscarán varias maneras para crear lo que tengas en mente, haciendo uso de casi todo tipo de materiales, como minerales, metales, artículos reciclados y todo con técnicas de bisutería.

Calidad, tradición y pericia: Alicante como región vinícola Cuando se trata de productos de calidad, no hay escasez de topónimos que hagan referencia a su origen. Con el tiempo estos puntos de referencia, especialmente cuando están relacionados con alimentos y bebidas (alcohólicas), incluso se convierten en sinónimos de estos productos. Incluso si no eres un sumiller, es probable que puedas nombrar al menos uno o dos casos de la Península Ibérica. Históricamente, Alicante como región vinícola también pertenecía a tales listas. Como os detallaré a continuación se trata de un reconocimiento que Alicante (aún y de nuevo) merece.

Quality, tradition and expertise: Alicante as a wine region When it comes to quality products, there is no shortage of place-names associated with their origin. Over time, such references, particularly when they related to food and (alcoholic) beverages, even become synonyms for these fine wares themselves. Even if you are not a sommelier, it is likely that you can name at least one or two examples from the Iberian Peninsula. Historically, Alicante as a wine region also belonged to such lists. As I will detail below; this is a recognition Alicante (still and again) deserves.

Zelfs indien u geen sommelier bent is de kans groot dat u er minstens één of twee afkomstig uit het Iberisch schiereiland kan opnoemen. Historisch gezien behoorde ook Alicante als wijnstreek tot zulke lijstjes. Zoals ik u hierna zal toelichten is dit een erkenning die Alicante (nog steeds en opnieuw) ten volle verdient.

Se cultivan viñedos y se producen vinos en cada una (¡!) de las 17 comunidades autónomas, desde los frescos a los potentes, de los elegantes a los dulces. Según datos del Observatorio Español del Mercado del Vino, en 2018 la extensión de tierras agrícolas en todo el país dedicadas a este propósito era de unas 960.758 hectáreas. (Para comparar: en el caso de Francia eran unas 835.805 hectáreas en 2016). La Comunidad Valenciana ocupaba el cuarto puesto en el ranking de las comunidades, con unas 61.317 hectáreas.

Quality / That Spain happens to be a wine country; is of course something I need not tell you, but to what degree; might perhaps be of your interest. You can find grapes in the fields and wine producers in each (!) of the 17 autonomous communities, with wines ranging from the light to the potent ones, from the elegant to the sweet. According to data from the Spanish Wine Market Observatory, in 2018, the extension of agricultural land dedicated to this purpose throughout the country was about 960,758 hectares (If you are unfamiliar with the metric system, a hectare is about 2.47 acres).

By comparison, in the case of France it was about 835.805 hectares in 2016. The Valencian Community ranks forth in the ranking of Spanish communities, with 61.317 hectares.

In elk (!) van de 17 deelstaten worden er druiven geteeld en wijnen geproduceerd, van fris tot krachtig, elegant tot zoet. Volgens data van het OeMv, het Spaans Observatorium van de Wijnmarkt, waren er in 2018 in het hele land 960.758 hectare landbouwgrond hieraan gewijd. (Ter vergelijking: bij onze Franse buren was dat 835.805 hectare in 2016) De Valenciaanse Gemeenschap neemt in deze ranking qua oppervlakte de vierde plaats in, met 61.317 hectare.

En nuestra provincia, el Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen Protegido representa unos 35 productores a ambos lados del río Vinalopó. Al norte las encontrarás en Alfaz del Pí, Teulada-Moraira, Calpe y los pueblos de la Vall de Pop (Castell la Castells, Benigembla, Murla, Parcent, Alcalalí, Xaló, Llíber, Senina y Benissa). En el sur, en Algueña, Monóvar, Novelda, Petrer, Pinoso, Salinas, Sax y Villena. Si sumamos su extensión de vid (y estrictamente hablando esto incluye una pequeña parte en la frontera de Murcia), se llega a unas 10.622 hectáreas. Eso equivale, por tanto, al 1,11% del total nacional y al 17,32% del total valenciano.

In our province, the Regulatory Council of the Protected Designation of Origin represents some 35 producers on both sides of the Vinalopó River. Pero no subestiméis los vinos alicantinos.

Los críticos de la “Wine Advocate”, una de las fuentes de información más reputadas del mundo para los entusiastas, han coronado Alicante ya en varias ocasiones como la zona de producción más respetada de la costa mediterránea. En enero de 2018, por ejemplo, no menos de 18 vinos locales recibieron una puntuación de 90 o más (de 100) en la escala de calidad de Parker. También la Guía Péñin, una referencia especializada en vinos españoles, ha nombrado Alicante ya en múltiples ocasiones como la mejor del país. La lista de distinciones y premios de origen internacional, nacional y local (el “Mejor Vino Moscatel”, por ejemplo) es simplemente demasiado larga para detallarla al completo e incorpora incluso reconocimientos por el diseño de las etiquetas. En mi opinión, esto tiene aún más mérito si se considera que los productores son invariablemente negocios familiares, frecuentemente unidos en cooperativas locales.

But do not let these statistics fool you regarding the wines’ quality. The Wine Advocate, one of the world’s most renowned information sources on the subject, has on several occasions named Alicante the top production region of the Mediterranean. In January 2018, for example, no less than 18 local wines received a score of 90 or more (out of 100) on the Parker quality scale. The Peñín Guide, a reference source specialised in Spanish wines, has also crowned Alicante best region in the country on multiple occasions. The list of awards and accolades of international, national and local origin (the “Best Moscatel Wine”, for example) is simply too long to cover and even includes distinctions for the labels’ design.

In my opinion, this has even more merit when one considers that the producers are invariably family businesses who have often joined forces through local cooperatives.

Onderschat de wijnen echter niet door deze cijfers. De critici van de ‘Wine Advocate’, éen van de meest belangrijke informatiebronnen voor liefhebbers wereldwijd, hebben Alicante al meermaals uitgeroepen tot de meest gewaardeerde productiezone aan de Middellandse Zee. In januari 2018, bijvoorbeeld, kregen niet minder dan 18 lokale wijnen een score van 90 of hoger (op 100) op de Parker kwaliteitsschaal. Ook de Guía Péñin, een in Spaanse wijnen gespecialiseerde referentie, bekroonde Alicante al meermaals tot de beste in het land. Describir esa historia en su totalidad ocuparía un artículo en sí, así que a continuación intentaré limitarme a algunos hitos clave. Los arqueólogos sitúan el inicio del cultivo de uva en España entre los años 4000 y 3000 antes de Cristo. Buying a wine from Alicante therefore amounts to acquiring a key piece of our heritage.

Describing that history in its entirety would merit an article in its own right, so I will therefore hereafter limit myself to some milestones.

Archaeologists estimate the beginning of Spanish grape production somewhere between 4000 and 3000 BC. As enologist Cristina Alcalá describes, the Fenicians introduced wine production on the Mediterranean coast from what today is the El Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz, Andalusia) to Denia. In El Campello an Iberian settlement from the sixth century BC has been found with grape seeds and a wine press . As the large number of amphoras and sunken galleys that have been found before the coast of Denia testitfy, the boom did not really take off until the arrival of the Romans some four hundred years later. References to wine have also been found in the mosaic floors of the famous Baños de la Reina in Calpe.

Een wijn uit Alicante kopen is dus een essentieel stukje erfgoed verwerven. Die in zijn geheel beschrijven is een artikel op zichzelf waardig, dus proberen we het hierna tot een paar hoogtepunten te beperken.

Archeologen schatten de start van de Spaanse druifteelt tussen het jaar 4000 en 3000 voor Christus. Zoals de enologe Cristina Alcalá heeft beschreven, waren het de Feniciërs die de wijnbouw aan de Middellandse Zeekust introduceerden, vanaf het tegenwoordige Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz, Andalousië) tot Denia. In El Campello heeft men een Iberische nederzetting uit de zesde eeuw voor Christus teruggevonden met zaadjes en wijnopslagplaatsen. Zoals het grote aantal voor de kust van Denia teruggevonden anfora en gezonken galeien getuigen, begon de groei pas echt met de komst van de Romeinen zo’n vierhonderd jaar later. En la España de predominio islámico se introdujeron nuevas infraestructuras hidráulicas para mejorar los procesos de producción.

El énfasis, sin embargo, cambiaba a la producción de pasas, aunque la del vino no se interrumpió, ya que los de Alicante fueron alabados por los poetas. Según The Guardian, la reina Elisabeth prefería los vinos de Alicante “encima de cualquier otro”. Su sucesor los consumía tanto que lo describió a su cirujano como el color de su orina.

Aparentemente, en su lecho de muerte, el rey del Sol Luis XIV sólo pedía bollos mojados en tintos alicantinos.

When Spain was mostly under Islamic rule new hydraulic infrastructure was introduced to improve the production process. The emphasis, however, changed to the production of raisins, although that of wine was not interrupted, as is evident from the praise those from Alicante received from poets. (For those who knew how to read, of course) With the Reconquista the wines’ export began and, after the discovery of the New World it prospered on an intercontinental scale. Ten tijde van het hoofdzakelijk islamitische Spanje werd er nieuwe hidraulische infrastructuur geïntroduceerd om het productieproces te verbeteren. Het accent werd echter verlegd op rozijnen, al verdween die van wijnen echter niet, diegene afkomstig uit Alicante werden immers wel door dichters geprezen. (Voor wie kon lezen, uiteraard) Met de Herovering begon de exportatie van Spaanse wijnen, en vanaf de ontdekking van de Nieuwe Wereld bloeide die op intercontinentale schaal. Vanaf 1510 mocht er per koninklijk decreet van Ferdinand Van Aragón in Alicante enkel wijn van lokale oorsprong worden verdeeld, een verbod dat 246 jaar lang stand hield.

Ondertussen verwierven de wijnen van Alicante een internationale reputatie.

In het bijzonder de dieprode Fondillón (waarover straks meer) viel in de smaak, ironisch genoeg vaak bij grote vijanden uit die tijden zoals Frankrijk en Engeland, maar ook Vlaanderen en de Nederlanden. Volgens The Guardian hield Elisabeth I van wijnen van Alicante ‘meer dan iedere andere’. Haar opvolger dronk er zoveel en zo vaak dat hij het aan zijn chirurgijn als de kleur van zijn urine beschreef. Zonnekoning Lodewijk de XIVde zou op zijn sterfbed enkel nog broodjes gedrenkt in wijnen uit Alicante willen genuttigd hebben.

La calidad siempre ha sido una constante. Así se han encontrado los restos de una fragata inglesa de 1813 en Tarragona con Fondillón a bordo que a pesar de los estragos del tiempo aún se podía probar. Este mismo siglo XIX se considera como la ‘edad de oro’ gracias a una plaga coetánea de los viñedos en Francia que facilitó el cierre de un acuerdo comercial ventajoso con este país. La extensión de los viñedos en la provincia alcanzaba entonces nueve veces actual. Desafortunadamente con el tiempo la plaga también llegó a España, pero afortunadamente fue derrotada.

A principios del siglo pasado Alicante creó un sello de calidad para los vinos autóctonos.

Quality has been a constant throughout. An example are the remains of an 1813 English frigate found in Tarragona with Fondillón on board, which, despite the ravages of time, could still be tasted. This same nineteenth century has been considered as the ‘golden age’ thanks to a concurrent plague of the vineyards in France that facilitated the closing of an advantageous trade treaty with this country. Zo heeft men in Tarragona de resten gevonden van een Engelse oorlogsbodem uit 1813 met Fondillón aan boord die ondanks de tand des tijds na 200 jaar nog steeds geproefd kon worden. Diezelfde negentiende eeuw wordt als het ‘gouden tijdperk’ beschouwd dankzij een toenmalige plaag in Frankrijk die ervoor zorgde dat er een voordelig handelsakkoord met dit land kan worden afgesloten. Pero al igual que otras regiones vinícolas en el país se creó un sello de calidad para los vinos autóctonos en forma de una Denominación de Origen Protegida propia (1932). Las cooperativas vieron la luz después de la Guerra Civil. La modernización solo arrancó bien a partir de la década de 1970, un proceso en curso hasta hoy, en parte gracias a la ayuda estatal y el acceso a fondos europeos desde 1986. Así, por ejemplo, también se han plantado variedades de uva foráneas desde la década de los 90, se está investigando activamente cómo mitigar el cambio climático, y se han introducido los depósitos de fermentación de acero inoxidable.

También se han creado nuevas marcas y productos (el cava a base de moscatel, por ejemplo), frecuentemente acompañados por envases y etiquetas visualmente atractivos (co-diseñados por cocineros estrella). Y como he descrito, no han faltado los reconocimientos.

Pericia ¿Qué tipo de uvas y vinos podéis, entonces, encontrar en Alicante? Con referencia a la materia prima, 9 variedades blancas y diez rojas distintas.

Entre las primeras encontramos el Moscatel de Alejandría, Airén, Padre Subirat, Chardonnay, Macabeo, Merseguera,Pedralba, Sauvignon Blanc, y Verdil. Entre las segundas el Monastrell, la Garnacha o Alicante Bouschet, el Bobal, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot, Syrah, y Tempranillo. Y con respecto a los tipos de vino: no menos de siete diferentes: blanco, tinto, rosado, dulce, espumosos, de licor (mistelas) y Fondillón. Como estas dos últimas son auténticas especialidades locales , las explicaré más a fondo.

At the beginning of the last century production fell greatly. But like other wine regions in the country, Alicante created a quality standard for its local wines in the form of its own Protected Designation of Origin (in 1932). After the Civil War, the cooperatives came into being.

Ook worden er bewust nieuwe merken en soorten gecreëerd (bijvoorbeeld cava op basis van zoete witte druiven), vaak gepaard met visueel aantrekkelijke verpakkingen en etiketten (mede ontworpen door sterrenchefs). En zoals beschreven mogen de resultaten er wezen.

Vakmanschap

Expertise What kind of grapes and wines can you find in Alicante, then? Regarding the raw material, you can find 9 varieties of white and 10 different varieties of red grapes. Among the first are the Muscatel from Alexandria, Airén, Father Subirat, Chardonnay, Macabeo, Merseguera, Pedralba, Sauvignon Blanc, and Verdil. Among the second Monastrell, the Garnacha or Alicante Bouschet, the Bobal, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot, Syrah, and Tempranillo. And as to the types of wine: no less than seven different ones: white, red, pink, sweet, sparkling, licor (mistelas) and Fondillón. I will explain these last two in more detail as they are authentic local specialties.

Een mistela is een natuurlijk zoete wijn op basis van druifsoorten zoals de Moscatel van

Malvasías y Garnacha Blanca. Se prepara a base de la paralización del mosto para agregarle alcohol de vino extra. El resultado es un aumento en el porcentaje de alcohol a 15-16 grados y del azúcar (hasta un total de 70 y 125 g/l) para obtener su sabor dulce característico.

El ya varias veces mencionado Fondillón es profundo vino tinto bien rojizo elaborado a partir de uva Monastrell que debe madurar un mínimo de diez años- incluso hay quién dice un mínimo de dieciséis-en barriles de madera de caoba.

Las uvas en sí mismas son extremadamente sensibles al clima y se cosechan a propósito únicamente cuándo estén sobremaduras (entre octubre y noviembre). Durante la larga fermentación no se agrega nada, todo el azúcar proviene de la propia uva. Debido a la complejidad de este proceso, este vino estuvo a punto de desaparecer, por suerte algunos emprendedores recuperaron este clásico. Hoy en día es uno de los pocos vinos de la Unión Europea que tienen derecho a llevar su propio nombre.

The already several times aforementioned Fondillón is an intensely coloured red wine made from Monastrell grapes that has to age for at least ten years- some sources say at least sixteen- in mahogany wooden barrels. The grapes themselves are extremely vulnerable to rain and are harvested on purpose only when they are too ripe (between October and November). During the long fermentation process nothing is added, all the sugar comes from the grapes themselves. This wine was about to disappear due to the complexity of this process; fortunately, some entrepreneurs recovered this classic for our enjoyment.

Nowadays it is one of the few wines certified by the European Union as legally allowed to bear their own name.

Het resultaat is een verhoging van het alcoholpercentage tot 15-16graden en extra suiker (tot een totaal van de 70 en 125 g/l) om haar karakteristieke zoete toets te bekomen.

De reeds meermaals vernoemde Fondillón is een dieprode wijn op basis van de Monastrell druif die minstens tien-zestien jaar lang in mahoniehouten vatten moet rijpen. De druiven zelf zijn gevoelig voor de regen en worden bewust pas geoogst als ze overrijp zijn (tussen oktober en november). Er wordt niets aan toegevoegd gedurende de lange fermentatie, alle suiker is afkomstig van de druif zelf. Mede omwille van dit complexe proces stond deze wijnsoort op het punt te verdwijnen, gelukkig hebben enkele durvers deze klassieker gerecupereerd. Tegenwoordig is het één van de weinige wijnsoorten in de Europese Unie die het recht hebben hun eigen naam te dragen.

Disfrutad a tope de los vinos de Alicante, pero por supuesto, ¡siempre con moderación!

Uiteraard is de wijnroute van Alicante in het algemeen een uitstekende manier om de dorpen waaruit hij bestaat en hun tradities (nog beter) te leren kennen. Zo kan u bijvoorbeeld eind augustus in Teulada aan de Moscatelfeesten deelnemen of in september de aan deze druif gewijde culinaire wedstrijd bijwonen. En indien u geen alcohol drinkt, geen nood- u kan uiteraard ook van de het fruit zelf genieten, en in de bodegas worden ook andere lekkernijen kopen die deze en verwante schatten van de aarde optimaal benutten. Een middeleeuws spreekwoord, tegenwoordig niet meer in gebruik, beweerde dat ‘men met brood en wijn, de weg maakt’. Hiermee werd bedoeld dat men goed gevoed elk werk aankan. Geniet ten volle van onze wijnen, maar doe dat uiteraard met mate!

Si pudiésemos dividir el gran territorio alicantino y destacar cada una de sus partes, está claro que una zona que no podemos omitir es la llamada Gran Alacant.

Ubicado en el cabo de Santa Pola, entre la sierra y la playa Carabassí, este extenso territorio cuenta con un total de 8.632 habitantes, esto según el censo realizado en el año 2018 por el Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE).

If we could split the large territory that is Alicante into smaller parts and highlight each one of them, it is clear that we could not leave out the area known as Greater Alicante (Gran Alacant).

Als we iets in het bijzonder kunnen benadrukken van deze plaats dan is het wel haar uitbreidende groei en haar economische instandhouding, want deze plek laat van zich horen door de hoeveelheid woonwijken; door het toerisme die de locatie als zodanig aanbiedt, die ook aangevuld wordt door de Mediterrane keuken en het grote aantal aan winkelgebieden.

En segundo lugar, tenemos una parte de Santa Pola, específicamente la sierra de este lugar, que sirve como un límite fronterizo entre Gran Alacant y el territorio de Santa Pola en general.

La sierra de Santa Pola tiene varias características, una de ellas es que se encuentra en ella una ruta, de 13 km de distancia, que empieza, rodea y termina en el mismo sitio de la sierra. Esta es una zona, cabe mencionar, bastante peculiar, pues es una belleza para los senderistas en general debido a que es un espacio de gran importancia geológica y que posee una interesante vegetación y una fauna características de la zona; pero también un lugar privilegiado para los cazadores, quienes acostumbran a practicar puntería entre los meses de octubre hasta marzo.

Y bueno, dicho estas pocas características, podemos mencionar que Gran Alacant no es una ciudad, ni siquiera es un pueblo, es una zona privilegiada y hermosa donde las personas recibirán de primera mano una experiencia tranquila y un contacto más cercano con la naturaleza, sin mencionar el agradable calor combinado con la frescura del agua de mar en estos tiempos de verano en los que ya estamos.

Secondly, we have a part of Santa Pola, specifically its mountain range, which acts as a boundary between Gran Alacant and the territory of Santa Pola as a whole.

The sierra of Santa Pola has several characteristics, one of them is that it contains a 13km path that starts, winds around and ends at the same location. It should be mentioned that this is a quite peculiar area since it is a gem for hiking fans in general due to its great geological importance, interesting vegetation and typical fauna, but also a preferred location for hunters, who tend to practise their marksmanship skills there from October to March.

Having described these few traits we can also mention that Gran Alacant is not a city, it is not even a town, it is a beautiful and exceptional location where people will live a calm experience and a closer contact with nature at first hand, without mentioning the nice warmth along with the refreshing sea water in this summertime that we already find ourselves in.

Ten tweede hebben we een stuk van Santa Pola, in het bijzonder de bergruggen van deze plaats, en die als een grens dienen tussen Gran Alacant en het grondgebied van Santa Pola in het algemeen.

Het gebergte van Santa Pola heeft verschillende eigenschappen, één daarvan is dat er zich daar een pad bevindt van 13 km weg bevindt dat op dezelfde plaats in de bergen begint, een bocht maakt, en eindigt. Collages creativos

Mi nombre es Karina Fischel, vivo en San Juan y trabajo en El Campello. Desde hace años he estado compaginando mi trabajo, mi familia, y mi arte. Mi gran pasión es ejercitar la creatividad hasta su máxima expresión, explorar todos los caminos que me lleven a crear. Este último año he estado indagando en una nueva forma de crear, realizando una colección de collages que tienen un gran valor para mí. Para estos collages reciclo maderas usadas, que ya sirvieron su función, para darles una nueva que nunca se pudieron figurar que tendrían. En ellas, cortadas y reconfiguradas a figuras curvas, conformo estos collages. Los usado para estos son compuestos, al 100%, de revistas. Revistas que contengan figuras que me gusten, que me llamen la atención o capten mi admiración. Que me trasmitan algún tipo de emoción. Realizo un recorte a mano, rasgando el papel, y así colecto cientos y cientos de pinceladas de colores que, al final del proceso, conforman el total de mi obra.

La revista Exquisitismso ha sido una de las principales fuentes de recursos para estas obras, todos los números han contribuido y lo seguirán haciendo. Me apasiona realmente poder juntar todas estas piezas que encuentro sin relación entre ellas para que se fundan en un collage, como si no pudieran ser representadas de ninguna otra forma que no fuera esa. El momento de crear es, sin lugar a dudas, mi momento zen del día. La creatividad estimula mi cerebro, mis emociones, mis recuerdos, y eso es lo que trato de plasmar para que otros y otras puedan notar lo que noto al crear: inspiración. Me gusta pensar en ello como un ciclo: encontrar inspiración, “traducirla” de su antigua vida a mis maderas, y ofrecerlas para inspiración ajena.

Tengo una pequeña cuenta en Instagram, @ artistkarina, para dar a conocer mis trabajos, documento ahí el proceso de creación, parte de los originales en las revistas que son los instrumentos de esta orquesta, y por supuesto, los resultados finales.

Esta revista, así como otras, tiene parte de responsabilidad en mi proceso creativo. Todo lo tiene, realmente, ya que en estos collages intento plasmar todo lo que me inspire a lo largo del tiempo, de una forma u otra. Receta ENSALADA DE PAPAYAS Y GAMBAS PAPAYA PRAWNS SALAD

1/4 de Papaya Fresca 4 Tirabeques 1 Lima Azucar Vinagre Pimineta Negra Pimieta Rosa 2 Gambas rojas

Preparacion :

Cortar la papaya en finas laminas Hervir las Gambas y tirabeques

Unir, 3 cucharaditas de azucar con 100 ml de vinagre, exprimir la mitad de una lima y colocar rayadura de lina una pizca, remover todo hasta integrar los ingredientes.
