The Pietermaritzburg Air Show

4

expresso | July 2014

It is that time of the year again, when birds of steel take over the skies, and the Pietermaritzburg Air Show was perhaps the most adrenaline filled spectacle of them all. SA Express decided to treat not only its employees to a free trip to see the show, but two family members for each employee were also invited along for the ride, with all expenses very kindly paid for by SA Express. By 08h00 on 7th June 2014, OR Tambo International Airport was buzzing with excitement as employees and their loved ones gathered ready to board the flight. Some were first time fliers, some were flying legends; there were young and old, daughters and mothers, fathers and sons, and even siblings who were all given a chance to bond while flying on SA Express. The event itself also did not disappoint, especially as SA Express opened the Air Show with their

domestic Q 400 aircraft. All of the employees and their family members came along for the ride, so while we couldn’t see the action from the spectators’ view, the adrenaline rush we felt was certainly something to write home about. The crowd was further entertained by amazing aerial stunts, from parachutists to aircraft. There was so much smoke in the air that one would swear that we were watching the kind of automobile tyre-screeching that leaves streets with skid marks! The Silver Falcons stole the show, however. Their display of skill was beyond human expectations, first as a group and then as phenomenally talented individuals. Surely the hand of God was protecting them as they performed intricate airborne summersaults and barely missed the ground? Now that is how you define “wings of change”!

In Memoriam

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of one of our own, Mr. Warren Julius. Warren has been ill for some time and was admitted to hospital on 20th June 2014. He eventually lost his battle on 22nd June 2014. He joined SA Express on 1st July 1994 as a General Worker in Cape Town and was promoted to a Maintenance Assistant in May 2007. Warren’s passion, commitment and loyalty resulted in him playing an integral part in the Cape Town Technical Department. His determination and positive fighting spirit will be remembered by all who had the honour of having their lives touched by him. Warren would have celebrated 20 years of service with SA Express on 1st of July 2014. He is survived by his wife, Lizzy, and their three sons, Bradley, Justin and Angelo. Our sincerest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. – Irish headstone

Born Frees off to Brazil We may have any world tournament, be it cricket, rugby or even karate, but the world knows that when it comes to the FIFA Soccer World Cup, even PS3 takes a break!

SA Express, in partnership with Metro FM, made nine young people’s dreams come true when they flew them to Brazil for a once in a lifetime opportunity to watch the Soccer World Cup abroad. The three airlines, together with Metro FM, held an event in the Southern Sun Hotel at OR Tambo International Airport to bid them farewell. This initiative is in line with South Africa’s celebration of its 20 years of democracy as well as SA Express’ own 20 year anniversary. It seems like SA Express is on the right track with its celebrations, as the event was a total success, with singer, Donald, entertaining the crowd with his hits.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula said: “It is not a moment of adventure but rather exposure to the world that will help these young Freedom Flyers have a broader perspective on life.” The nine lucky winners from all nine provinces are: Winnie Skhosana (Gauteng), Matshediso Mohono (Limpopo), Ayanda Manoka (Mpumalanga), Njabulo Shange (KwaZulu-Natal), Buyelwa Xundu (Western Cape), Zandisile Nimbama (Eastern Cape), Ursula Moalahi (Northern Cape), Phemelo Pooe (North West) and Lebogang Mosime (Free State).

company news

SA Express to the Rescue SA Express might fly high but they are still rooted to people on the ground. During the month of May, SA Express delivered a wheelchair to Martie du Plessis School for the Disabled. The wheelchair was flown from SA Express headquarters in Johannesburg to Bloemfontein – all thanks to the hard work of bottle-cap collecting employees. The initiative was spearheaded by Janet Cloete, who is always keen on collecting plastic bottle caps from employees and always encourages everybody to get involved in the initiative. It takes 100,000 bottle caps or 300 kg of plastic bottles to be equivalent to one wheelchair, but SA Express chose to go with the bottle cap collections instead of full plastic bottles due to space constraints. Due to the fact that Bloemfontein Station collected the most plastic bottle caps, they were given the opportunity to

select a school of their choice to receive the wheelchair. The wheelchair was given to a Grade 11 pupil, Henrik Hattingh, who previously did not have a wheelchair to move around at school. He was ecstatic and was very grateful for his new set of wheels: “I am really happy to receive this wheelchair. I don’t have the right words to explain how I feel about it, but it will make my life much easier. I want to thank SA Express for this wonderful gift.” Marna Britz, the physiotherapist at Martie du Plessis, was also very grateful for the wheelchair donation her school received from SA Express. The “Tops and Tags” initiative is an ongoing programme that still requires collective and enthusiastic input from all SA Express employees.

Movies to Watch Out for This Month Step Up All In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes In the next exciting chapter of the international phenomenon Step Up, all-stars from previous installments come together in glittering Las Vegas, to battle for a victory that could define their dreams and their careers.

This latest movie in the Plant of the Apes saga continues the story of how ultra-intelligent simian Caesar presides over the fall of human civilization. A growing nation of genetically evolved apes – led by Caesar – is threatened by a band of humans who survived a devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.
