Swift Forecasting Saved Lives Multiple warnings prevented more loss of life across Midwest When a cluster of violent thunderstorms began marching across the Midwest, forecasters were able to draw a bright line across a map showing where the worst of the weather would go. Their uncannily accurate predictions, combined with television and radio warnings, text-message alerts and storm sirens, almost certainly saved lives when rare lateseason tornadoes dropped out of a dark autumn sky. Although the storms howled across 12 states and f lattened entire neighborhoods within a matter of minutes, the death toll stood at just eight. By Monday, another more prosaic reason for the relatively low death toll came to light: In the hardest-hit town, most families were in church. “I don’t think we had one church damaged,” said Gary Manier, mayor of Washington, Ill., a town

When a newspaper for Filipino workers in New Zealand told readers how to donate to the typhoon relief effort in their homeland, it mentioned agencies like the Red Cross but not a list of government bank accounts that the Philippine Embassy had sent over. “I’m not going to mince words,” said Mel Fernandez, the editorial adviser for the Filipino Migrant News. “We would like every cent to reach those poor people there rather than getting waylaid.” Corruption is a concern after any major natural disaster, as millions of dollars in cash and goods rush in from around the world. Ford Stripped of Some Powers Toronto’s City Council voted Monday to strip scandal-plagued Mayor Rob Ford of many of his powers following a heated debate in which he knocked over a female councilor. Council members voted overwhelmingly to cut Ford’s ofﬁce budget by 60 percent and allow mayoral staff to join the deputy mayor. Ford now effectively has no legislative power as he would no longer chair the executive committee. Ford retains his title and ability to represent Toronto at ofﬁcial functions. A retired Minnesota carpenter, shown in a June investigation to be a former commander in a Nazi SSled unit, ordered his men to attack a Polish village that was razed to the ground, according to testimony newly uncovered by The Associated Press. The account of the massacre that killed dozens of women and children contradicts statements by the man’s family that he was never at the scene of the 1944 bloodshed. The June story prompted ofﬁcial investigations in both Poland and Germany. On Monday, the prosecutor leading Germany’s probe revealed that he has decided to recommend that state prosecutors pursue murder charges against 94-year-old Michael Karkoc. Thomas Will, the deputy head of the special prosecutors’ ofﬁce that investigates Nazi crimes, said he had made his decision even before seeing the new testimony that Kar-

A newly unearthed investigative file originally from the Ukrainian intelligence agency’s archive reveals that a private under Karkoc’s command testified in 1968 that Karkoc ordered the assault on Chlaniow in retaliation for the slaying of an SS major. The major, slain by resistance fighters, led the Ukrainian Self Defense Legion, in which Karkoc was a company commander. A German roster of the unit confirms that Pvt. Ivan Sharko, a Ukrainian, served under Karkoc’s command at the time. An initial

Could the Metro Messes Be Less Messy? I’d weathered the delays twice in the past week, so on Thursday after standing on a crowded platform for 20 minutes, I ﬁnally gave up and left. To add insult to injury, I still got charged the $2.10 base fee, even though I never went anywhere. Is there any hope of a change to this policy — say when there are delays over X minutes you can enter and exit at the same station for free? In this particular case, I’d apply through Metro’s customer service line for a refund, because the SmarTrip technology is at least smart enough to detect that you

were caught up in the Red Line delays. If it happened again, I think I’d go to the station manager and asked to be let out through the gate.

Whenever the Red Line breaks during the morning rush, I have the same question: Why can’t Metro run more buses down Connecticut Avenue? The buses are so full that they don’t stop to pick up new riders. When you live in D.C., you have two options: (1) body slam your way into a packed train, or (2) wave at buses as they pass. The buses on the Connecticut Avenue Line are scheduled to run

six minutes apart at the height of rush hour. That’s pretty good for a Metrobus route, but apparently not good enough to meet the demand, even on normal days. Riders should tell Metrobus officials where they want more service, because I think the officials will pay attention. However, there are limits on what they can do.

When they see that it’s a seriously long delay, why don’t they run eight car trains? Certainly they had enough time to realize how long it would take and make the adjustments. The delays went on an incredibly long time, but I think not long enough to rearrange the train sets

without causing an even worse disruption in service. Metro does position some “gap” trains to enter service during emergencies, but as with the Metrobuses, there are limits. When there’s single-tracking at rush hour, the inbound trains are going to stack up waiting their turn at the entry point to the singletracking zone. That’s going to mess up the schedule all along the line.

I noticed that signs showing the Silver Line were up at Ballston this morning. Is Metro not worried that riders might get confused and start looking for trains that are going toward Tysons now? Yes. Lynn Bowersox, the Metro official leading the marketing cam-

paign for the Silver Line, has noted the concern that riders can get confused if certain types of information are deployed too early. The problem is that they can’t make all the wayfinding changes at the last minute, just before the Silver Line opens.

I’ve noticed lately that my SmarTrip card, which I got about a year or two after they were introduced, won’t register at some fare gates. Is it the card, the gate card reader, or both? Many of us have had problems with individual fare card readers. If that’s what’s going on, I think it’s not a problem with your SmarTrip card. I’ve had my card about as long as you have, and it still works ﬁne — despite the occasional problem with a faregate reader.

D.C.’s Building Heights May Rise ‘Targeted exceptions’ recommended by a key planning body Washington A key planning body is poised to recommend that Congress allow D.C. leaders to relax building height limits in some parts of the city. Draft recommendations released Monday by the National Capital Planning Commission call for allowing “targeted exceptions” to the current building height limitations, set by a 1910 act of Congress.

The Caveats The draft recommendations say changes to the height limit should apply only outside the portion of the city planned by Pierre L’Enfant, roughly situated south of Florida Avenue from Rock Creek west to the Anacostia River. They hold that changes to the current heights of buildings, which are generally calibrated to the widths of the streets they face, must be approved through the city’s comprehensive plan — a document subject to a rigorous drafting process. The draft offered Monday, while more open to changes than an initial set of recommendations, comes nowhere close to the recommendations issued by the District’s planning ofﬁce in September, which called for downtown buildings as

high as 200 feet — 40 feet higher than the current limit for structures along Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Harriet Tregoning, the city’s chief planner, has argued that the city needs to consider relaxing height limits now in order to

accommodate the city’s growth — particularly in light of the city’s recent population boom. But many local activists have strongly objected to the notion that the city’s buildings must grow taller. Groups including the National Trust for Historic Preservation have said the arguments in favor of changing the height limits are unsound and threaten the city’s character. Local Zebra Bites Zookeeper, Spooked Gazelle Dies Washington A young gazelle died at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo on Monday, apparently from injuries sustained when it ran into a barrier. Zoo officials said the animal seemed to have been spooked by noises coming from a nearby enclosure, where a zebra had attacked a zoo keeper. The unlikely series of events began around 8:45 a.m., the zoo said in a statement, when a 10-yearold male zebra bit a veteran keeper multiple times. The keeper, whose name was not released, was “deﬁnitely bleeding,” but conscious and talking as he was taken to a local

hospital for treatment, said Annalisa Meyer, a zoo spokeswoman. Ofﬁcials are trying to determine why the keeper was inside the enclosure with the animals, which is a violation of zoo procedures. The incident occurred out of public view. About 11:15 a.m., a dama gazelle was found dead inside his enclosure, next to where the zebras are located. Initial necropsy results indicate that the gazelle had fractured a vertebrae. “The gazelle was likely spooked by the incident between the keeper and the zebra and ran into the barrier,” Meyer said. Booming Too Loudly? D.C.’s burgeoning youth scene leaves some city elders feeling edged out Washington Amid the loud buzz of development that has resounded through the Washington area in recent years, attracting young people in droves, older people such as 80-year-old Jackie Parham say their voices are increasingly drowned out. Many are longtime residents who persisted in the District through grittier, more-dangerous decades. Now, they fear that the city they helped revitalize is slipping away. At her local Advisory Neighborhood Commission meeting Wednesday night, Parham listened to a presentation for a new TGI Fridays proposed for Columbia Heights. The restaurant, which proposes to have karaoke music and disc jockeys and to stay open until 2 a.m.,

would be directly under her home in the Samual Kelsey Apartments, a senior residence on 14th Street NW. “I have trouble sleeping,” Parham told the commission. “I would like for them to close at 12 o’clock.” From 2009 to 2012, the Washington area had the highest average annual net gain of millennials — people ages 25 to 34 — of any large U.S. metropolitan area, according to a new Brookings Institution analysis. And although some empty nesters are also moving to the area’s revitalized urban corridors, most of the District’s population growth in the past decade has been spurred by people in their 20s and 30s. Now, new condominium units are increasingly marketed to young people. New boutiques carry clothing in tiny sizes and hipster styles. New bike lanes share space with car lanes. And new restaurants keep their inside lights frustratingly dim and the music deafeningly loud. “It’s a shame to live here and not even go out to eat because the

noise is so bad,” said Alaire Rieffel, 68, who has lived near Dupont Circle for 40 years. She also feels squeezed out by the offerings at new shops. “There used to be, all along Connecticut, stores that had a nice range of sizes and a nice range of tastes,” Rieffel said. “Not being 19, I don’t like close-ﬁtting clothes,

and you unfortunately can’t ﬁnd that around here anymore.” In Cleveland Park, a 50-year-old service road along four blocks of Connecticut Avenue NW has become the focus of a generational clash. A group of largely younger residents seeks to replace the service road with a wider sidewalk that would allow for outdoor cafe seating and provide more space for pedestrians. An informal neighborhood survey showed opinion divided loosely by generation: 77 percent of residents younger than 45 want the service lane changed; 60 percent of those 45 and older want to keep it as is. William Frey, the senior fellow

at Brookings’ Metropolitan Policy Program who did the analysis on millennials moving to D.C., said such clashes are “part of the price of prosperity” as more young people move into an area. “Community leaders and developers need to figure out how to make the other parts of the community good with it and how to draw them in,” he said. One solution is to prioritize development that caters to several generations at once, said Donna Butts, executive director of Generations United, a national nonproﬁt

organization that promotes intergenerational strategies in public policy. “Businesses might cater at different times of day to different generations,” she said, noting that a restaurant could be quieter and brighter in the early evening and louder and dimmer in the late evening. A Sound Settlement? After testimony from supporters and detractors of the proposed TGI Fridays in Columbia Heights, the Advisory Neighborhood Commission voted unanimously Wednesday to support a settlement agreement. The restaurant could keep its late hours and pursue a live entertainment endorsement, but it would have to adhere to a promise to soundproof the space. D.C. Council member Jim Graham said he will push for the settlement agreement to include language that would halt the amplified music if the soundproofing in the 8,000-square-foot space is inadequate. Not Much Worth Keeping Missing the playoffs this season isn’t the worst part for the Washington Redskins. It’s that the roster has only five players truly worth keeping next year. Quarterback Robert Griffin III, running back Alfred Morris, receiver Pierre Garcon, tight end Jordan Reed and By Rick left tackle Trent Snider Williams are foundation players. Notice the defense doesn’t have one? Nose tackle Barry Cofield, linebackers Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan and cornerback DeAngelo Hall are good, but the team could play on without them. Special teams will likely face a total makeover, too. After four seasons, coach Mike Shanahan has only a handful of playmakers despite turning over nearly the entire roster. The defense and special teams are barren of All Pros. Old Mother Hubbard had more in her cup-

boards than Shanahan has. And it might not even be Shanahan’s roster next year. Let’s see how this season finishes before forecasting coaches, but owner Dan Snyder can’t waste another year with the same miserable ending. If Griffin’s shelf life is short, it’s best to change coaches because this current regime has no answers. It’s not economically feasible to dump a roster and start anew. There are only so many draft picks and premier free agents that can make a difference. Teams feel like they’re saddled with roughly the same major players each year. But this time, the final weeks will be for player and coaches evaluations. Sadly, fan favorites London Fletcher and Santana Moss are probably playing their final games for Washington.

It’s time for young upgrades. Same goes for the interior offensive line, safety Brandon Meriweather, punter Sav Rocca, receiver Josh Morgan, and tight ends Fred Davis and Niles Paul. The Redskins’ 3-7 free fall (that likely will end no better than 6-10) isn’t just about Grifﬁn recovering from offseason knee surgery, though he’s still not playing at his 2012 form. It’s the lack of overall talent and playmakers that’s preventing the team from sealing victories. Maybe the Redskins settled

for some lesser players because the $36 million salary cap sanction prevented upgrades. But the Redskins were hoping for more than this roster could deliver. There was no way the line could protect Grifﬁn playing more as a pocket passer. The secondary wouldn’t be able to withstand facing so many top quarterbacks. The Redskins went with Plan B too often and now have no answers to stopping opposing offenses. Grifﬁn can’t bail out the defense this year. A second rebuilding wave with only one division title and no playoff victories means Shanahan will be asking for several more years. Really, how long will it take — eight years, maybe 10? Virginia St. Looking Into Fight College Football Virginia State football coach Latrell Scott says there was a “rush to judgment” after a fight at last week’s CIAA championship luncheon left Winston-Salem State’s quarterback injured and caused Saturday’s game to be canceled. “I acknowledge that we had one young man who made a bad decision, as young men sometimes do,” Scott said Monday during a news conference attended by many team members and some parents. Trojans running back Lamont Daniel Britt has been charged with misdemeanor assault inﬂicting serious injury in the fight involving WSSU’s Rudy Johnson. Scott said four Trojans players were questioned after the incident, but Britt is the only player to have been charged. Citing the ongoing investigations, the school declined to comment on what precipitated the ﬁght. The CIAA, which decided to cancel the game, also declared Virginia State ineligible for postseason play. Virginia State President Keith T. League Reviewing Ref Incident Redskins The Washington Redskins and the NFL are reviewing an incident in which a game official allegedly directed profane words at left tackle Trent Williams. “You just can’t use that type of language to get your point across,” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. Williams said he was called vulgar names by ofﬁcial No. 81 — which was umpire Roy Ellison — during a Redskins possession late

“Run and dodge!” Sarah Hippert roared, whipping her students into a frenzied dash. Suddenly she gave the order to halt and demanded squat jumps, lunges and pushups. Then the whole routine repeated again and again. When it seemed like the group at the YMCA Anthony Bowen (ymcadc .org) was on the verge of collapse, Hippert yelled out one more command: “Stop and recover.” And that was just the warmup for Les Mills Grit Cardio, a new workout from the international ﬁtness company that’s developed many of the most popular formats in gyms today, including Bodypump, which is taught at Gold’s Gym, Sport & Health and countless other health clubs in the D.C. area. The Les Mills Grit series — Cardio, Strength and Plyo — is designed to introduce the masses to “high-intensity interval training.” Often shortened to HIIT, this athletic style is behind such trends as CrossFit and P90X and can produce better results faster than typical workouts. The problem? Many instructors throw together random moves and don’t understand recovery, which can lead to bad experiences, or even injury. What Les Mills does, says Erin Myers, the company’s East Coast marketing specialist, is develop classes that are safe and effective. In a Les Mills Grit session, “every time you take a rest, it’s strategically planned, and the range of motion is planned,” she says.

That approach appealed to Angela Meyer, the D.C. regional director of group exercise for the YMCA, which is why she arranged the program’s District debut this fall. “This isn’t somebody just making up stuff,” says Meyer, who appreciates the structure and quality control of Les Mills offerings. At the end of each 30-minute class, she knows exactly how students will feel: “If you do it to your fullest potential, you’re worn out.” Whether it’s Cardio (just body weight moves), Strength (with barbells) or Plyo (which gives students a step to jump over), all Les Mills Grit Series workouts are designed to raise heart rates and tax muscles to the beat of a thumping soundtrack. “The music is timed so perfectly, I can’t give them a break,” Hippert says not-so-apologeti-

Arnold Gaither, another YMCA instructor, says his first experience with Les Mills Grit reminded him of winter conditioning from his days as a college football player. So he borrows from the techniques that worked for him back then. “When someone’s given their max effort, I go over and ask for one more,” says Gaither, who offers a palm for students to high-five as they jump. The motivational component makes it feel like personal training, said Camille Sabbakhan, 43, after finishing a Strength workout that had her hoisting weights above her head, squatting forever and completing a ridiculous number of burpees. “The intensity of the exercise with the minimal recovery pushes you beyond your comfort level,” Sabbakhan said. Enroll With the Punches

The new health-care law is affecting employer plans. Here’s what to expect. It’s annual enrollment time, the autumn period when many people with job-based health insurance ante up for another year. ¶ Although news reports have fixated on the problems with the online health marketplaces that launched Oct. 1, for the vast majority of people, that’s a nonissue. If they get insurance through a job at a company that has at least 50 employees, they probably won’t be using the marketplaces, also called exchanges. ¶ That doesn’t mean people with employer-based plans are unaffected by the health law. As employers adjust plans to meet new requirements and try to reduce their costs, people can expect to see changes next year.

Overall, premium increases will be moderate in 2014, averaging 5.2 percent, according to a 2013 employer survey about planned health-care changes by the human resources consultant Towers Watson. But employers may raise rates disproportionately for spouses and dependents, the survey found. The health law requires plans to cover dependent children up to age 26, and most plans cover spouses too. But employers continue to try to minimize those costs by making it financially less attractive to employees to cover their family members. They may charge separately for each child on a plan, for example, or add a surcharge for covering a spouse who is also offered insurance through his or her own job. Some, such as UPS, have moved to cut off coverage entirely to spouses who have access to insurance through their own jobs.

In the Towers Watson survey, 34 percent of employers said they planned to increase the employee share of the premium for spouse and dependent coverage by 5 percentage points or more in 2014. Last year, 21 percent planned such big increases. In contrast, 22 percent of employers said they would increase the worker’s share for employee-only coverage by 5 percentage points or more. “Everyone wants to make sure they’re not picking up the cost of covering other dependents,” says Julie Stone, a senior consultant at Towers Watson. Another change deals with the so-called Cadillac plans — those that cost more than $10,200 for an individual or $27,500 for a family.

The health law requires plans to cover dependent children up to age 26, and most plans cover spouses too. But employers continue to try to minimize those costs.

In 2018, these policies will incur an excise tax of 40 percent on the amount that premiums exceed those totals. Stone says 60 percent of employers surveyed expect to trigger the tax if they don’t adjust their plans, and some are beginning to make changes in 2014 to ratchet back on generous coverage. For employees, that will generally mean higher deductibles and copayments or coinsurance, not to mention a continued shift to account-based plans — high deductible plans paired with a health savings account or health reimbursement arrangement from the employer that the worker can use to cover out-of-pocket costs. More than half of employers offer such plans in 2013, according to an annual employer survey by the human resources consulting ﬁrm Aon Hewitt, and another 30 percent are considering doing so in the next ﬁve years. Increasingly, employers are i ncor porat i ng t he f i na ncia l rewards into the premium itself rather than giving employees a cash payment, says Chris Renz of human resources consultant Mercer. “It puts a lot more dollars at stake,” Renz says. “Instead of a one-time $100 reward, you might see an annual $500 difference in premiums.” Workers who don’t like what their employer is offering can shop for coverage on the state exchanges. But they won’t be eligible for subsidies unless their employer plan is considered unaffordable or inadequate under the health law. A plan is deemed unaffordable if employee-only coverage costs more than 9.5 percent of household income, and inadequate if it pays less than 60 percent on average of allowed medical expenses. Since employers typically subsidize about 80 percent of the cost of coverage, most employer plans are going to be a better deal for employees than unsubsidized coverage on an exchange, Rosenberg says. Employees should also expect to see a continued emphasis on wellness and health management activities, including ﬁnancial incentives for completing health risk assessments and keeping blood pressure, cholesterol and weight within recommended ranges.

How Does the Health Law Affect Federal Employees’ Health Benefits? Open enrollment season began Nov. 11 for the approximately 8 million federal workers and their dependents who receive health-care coverage through the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program or FEHB. The 2010 Affordable Care Act calls for some changes in that coverage. Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about how the measure will affect federal workers’ health insurance. I work at a federal agency and am enrolled in FEHB. Does the Affordable Care Act require me to purchase health insurance on the law’s new online marketplaces, known as exchanges? No, you do not have to buy coverage on the marketplace. You can stay with FEHB. But if you want to shop for a health plan on the exchange, you will not qualify for a subsidy because the federal government pays up to 75 percent of the cost of your FEHB coverage.

I work on Capitol Hill. Do I have to purchase coverage through the exchanges? Yes. A provision of the health

law, originally authored by Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, requires that, if you are a member of Congress or work on a lawmaker’s personal staff, you must obtain your health coverage through the online insurance marketplace. And, according to a recent ruling from the Office of Personnel Management, or OPM, whether or not you are employed in the D.C. Metro area, you must purchase coverage on the District of Columbia small business exchange. “Given the location of Congress in the District of Columbia, OPM has determined that the DC SHOP (Small Business Health Options Program) … administered by the

For the 2014 plan year, members of Congress and their designated staffs must pick from options in the DC SHOP’s “gold” level of coverage, according to OPM. The enrollment period coincides with FEHB open season, which runs from Nov. 11 to Dec. 9. Coverage will be effective Jan. 1. The DC SHOP offers several health plans with nationwide coverage. A member of Congress or a designated staff member could decline the contribution if they wish. Since some Capitol Hill staffers split their time between working on a committee staff and a member’s personal staff, OPM asked lawmakers to decide by this month which aides are designated as personal staff.

I’ve heard about some legislative proposals that would repeal the current federal subsidy for lawmakers and other public ofﬁcials. What are those proposals? During the recent debate over how to end the federal government shutdown and raise the debt ceiling, Sen. David Vitter, R-La., pushed a measure that would have required members of Congress, their staffs, the president and vice president, and political appointees to purchase coverage on the exchange without the federal government subsidy. Vitter has said he will continue to push for the amendment. And he has a separate bill that would require members of Congress to make public which staff members they have exempted from the exchanges. Mind Your Medicare Seniors should watch for plan changes and make adjustments With so much fuss and frustration over the open enrollment for the health-care marketplaces, some people might be missing important information about another open-enrollment season. O p en en rol l ment for t he exchanges is overlapping and overshadowing the importance of the Medicare open-enrollment period, which started Oct. 15 and ends Dec. 7. It is during this period that those covered by Medicare can change their health plan and prescription drug coverage for 2014. Medicare is still a complicated system that requires recipients to pay close attention: Part A is hospital insurance, Part B is medical insurance, Part C is Medicare Advantage (offered by private companies approved by Medicare such as an HMO) and Part D is prescription drug coverage. “If you are happy with your coverage, you don’t have to change,”

said Frederic Riccardi, director of client services at the nonprofit Medicare Rights Center. “But plans can change cost and beneﬁts every year.” By now you should have received your “Annual Notice of Change,” which lists the changes in your plan. Review the document. It will compare the beneﬁts in 2014 with those you’ve received this year. In addition to your health-care choices, pay particular attention to your prescription drug plan and the list of covered medications. Insurers change the drugs they cover, their procedures, their rates and sometimes their networks of doctors. But don’t just focus on prices. Balance affordability with coverage, Riccardi said. Make sure the medications you need are still covered. Check to see if under your plan you need prior authorization or if there are quality limits. Average prescription drug prices and Medicare health-plan premiums remain stable for next year. Most people don’t pay a monthly premium for Part A because they have at least 40 quarters of Medicare-covered employment. Part A pays for inpatient hospital, skilled nursing facility and some home health-care services. because you’ve got a different set of locks to look at. A cognitive-behavioral therapist can help you develop a plan to feel better, not only by working through your feelings, but also by creating steps of mental and physical exercises to systematically lessen your anxiety.

Given that this guy will literally be standing up for you at your wedding, you’re right that kicking him out is out. It also sounds like he’s doing his best to not be intrusive. So you help him, because that’s what family does. But it doesn’t mean indeﬁnitely or without boundaries. There should be a clear deadline (for his own good) as to how long he’s going to stay before enacting Plan B. And Plan B needs to be clear as well, whether it’s crashing with someone else, lowering his apartment standards or at least paying you rent. Your ﬁance should do this negotiating while you focus on starting your relationship with your brother-in-law on the right foot.

A Breakup Song You have relationships with certain songs, albums, artists. Maybe it’s a record that got you through a bad time. Maybe it’s something you played at your wedding. They belong to you, you think. Monday, British progressive folkrock singer and guitarist Roy Harper, 72, was in court facing charges that he sexually assaulted a girl younger than 13 back in the 1970s. Harper denies the charges. Who is this old By Shauna guy? Well, he’s part of Miller the reason Nick Drake and Pink Floyd and Fairport Convention sounded the way they did. He’s part of the reason Fleet Foxes and Bright Eyes and Joanna Newsom sound like they do. He was a pioneer of the stuff that’s the foundation of indie rock today. He also wrote a song that was “mine,” 1971’s “Me and My Woman.” It’s 13 minutes long and is the theme of the nonsense land where people in love live, where “He spreads her a shelter/ She takes the tall skies/ As they helter skelter/ Along the same sighs.” People still love R. Kelly and Chris Brown. You decide how to reconcile the artist with the art. I’d usually be mad about this latest news, disgusted on a political level. But I loved that song. I felt love in it. Despite a great cast, Amazon’s streaming ‘Alpha House’ is too arch for its own good Television Review Garry Trudeau’s “Alpha House,” a half-hour comedy series that’s now streaming for your fickle platform pleasure on Amazon.com, is about four Republican senators who share a Capitol Hill townhouse. “Alpha House” looks good to

go at ﬁrst. It has the right cast, led by John Goodman; it has a studied understanding that modern comedy must put abject humiliation and awkwardness above all other forms of humor; it easily accommodates a series of boldface names who make cameo appearances as either characters or as themselves; and most of all, it has at its helm Trudeau, the “Doonesbury” creator who can lay claim to a formative work of TV political comedy (HBO’s ancient “Tanner ’88,” a collaboration with Robert Altman).

Strangely, the one element “Alpha House” is missing is hilarity. The show is so tight — maybe too tight — that it starts to choke on its own power-tie premise in the ﬁrst three episodes. Part of “Alpha House’s” burden to bear is that it feels about 15 crucial minutes late to the raging bonfire that is now Washington parody. This territory is already well-scorched — lately by HBO’s cruelly unerring “Veep,” but also by Netﬂix’s stylish and utterly cynical “House of Cards” (meant to be

a drama, yet easily ingested as satire, like ABC’s “Scandal”), as well as the familiar, nightly whippings that Beltway and media culture receive from Jon Stewart. Like Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ vice president on “Veep,” the men of “Alpha House” each struggle to keep ahead of the Twittersphere’s

A Firebrand Author Dies Outspoken Nobel winner Doris Lessing wrote on feminism and colonialism

Novelist Doris Lessing, who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 2007, died Sunday.

Published in Britain in 1962, the book was considered too inﬂammatory for publication France and Germany for another 14 years. When it was republished in China in 1993, 80,000 copies sold in two days.

Lessing was 88 when she won the Nobel prize, making her the oldest recipient of the award. Born Doris May Tayler on Oct. 22, 1919, in Persia (now Iran), Lessing moved to Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) at age 5 and lived there until she was 29. The panel will likely get insight into Warhol’s creation of the Fawcett image, which was based on a Polaroid photo the artist took of the “Charlie’s Angels” star in 1980. The image, one of the main attractions in a 2011 exhibit at UT’s Blanton Museum of Art, features an unsmiling Fawcett looking out from the canvas. Warhol painted her lips red and her eyes green.

Jury selection in the trial is expected to begin this week, with O’Neal and possibly Fawcett’s “Charlie’s Angels” co-star Jaclyn Smith taking the witness stand. The case resumes on Wednesday. Fawcett decreed in her will that all her artwork go to the school, yet O’Neal insists that Warhol gave him a copy of the portrait as a gift. University of Texas’ lawyers contend O’Neal improperly removed the portrait from Fawcett’s condo after her death in 2009. Obituary When Doris Lessing was told in 2007 that she had won the Nobel Prize for literature, she retorted, “Oh Christ! I couldn’t care less.” That kind of response was typical of the author, who died Sunday after a long career that included 1962’s “The Golden Notebook,” which made her an icon of the women’s movement. Lessing’s work reﬂected her own journeys across the former British Empire. The cause of Lessing’s death at her home in London was not immediately disclosed. She was 94. Lessing explored topics ranging from colonial Africa to dystopian Britain, from the mystery of being female to the unknown worlds of science ﬁction.
