Chicago Dozens of tornadoes and intense thunderstorms swept across the Midwest on Sunday, causing extensive damage in several central Illinois communities, killing at least three people and prompting officials at Chicago’s Soldier Field to evacuate the stands and delay the Bears game. “The whole neighborhood’s gone. The wall of my fireplace is all that is left of my house,” said Michael Perdun, speaking by cellphone from the hardhit town of Washington, where he said his neighborhood was wiped out in a matter of seconds. “I stepped outside and I heard it coming. My daughter was already in the basement, so I ran downstairs and grabbed her, crouched in the laundry room and all of a sudden I could see daylight up the stairway and my house was gone.” An elderly man and his sister were killed when a tornado hit their home around noon in the rural community of New Minden, said Mark Styninger, the coroner of Washington County in southern Illinois. A third person died in Washington, said Melanie Arnold of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. She did not provide details.

“After the tornado, [I was] walking through the neighborhoods, and I couldn’t even tell what street I was on. Just completely flattened — some of the neighborhoods here in town, hundreds of homes.” — T Y LER GEE , A WASHINGTON, ILL., ALDERMAN SPEAKING SUNDAY TO WLS-TV

By mid-afternoon it remained unclear how many people were hurt. And Steve Brewer, chief operating officer at Methodist Medical Center of Illinois in Peoria, said that four or five people had come to the hospital seeking treatment, but he described their injuries as minor. He said another area hospital had received about 15 patients, but did not know the severity of their injuries. Just how many tornadoes hit was unclear Sunday afternoon. According to the National Weather Services’ website, a total of 59 tornadoes had struck, the bulk of them in Illinois. But meteorologist Matt Friedlein said the total might fall because emergen-

cy workers, tornado spotters and others often report the same tornado. According to agency officials, parts of Illinois, Indiana, southern Michigan and western Ohio were at the greatest risk of seeing tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds throughout the day Sunday. Strong winds and atmospheric instability were expected to sweep across the Central Plains during the day before pushing into the midAtlantic states and northeast by evening. Many of the storms were expected to become supercells, with the potential to produce tornadoes, large hail and destructive winds. DON BABWIN (AP)

1 in 5 May Not Be Able to Enroll Using Health-Care Site Washington The Obama administration will consider the new federal insurance marketplace a success if 80 percent of users can buy health-care plans online, according to government and industry officials familiar with the project. The goal for how many people should be able to make it through the insurance exchange is an internal target that administration officials have not made public. It

Three Groups According to a government official familiar with the new target, the 20 percent who are unlikely to be able to enroll at healthcare.gov are expected to fall into three groups: people whose family circumstances are so complicated that the website cannot determine their subsidy eligibility, people uncomfortable buying insurance online and people who encounter technical problems. (T WP)

acknowledges that as many as one in five Americans who try to use the website to buy insurance will be unable to do so. The measure is the first concrete performance standard in the 3½ years since the government began to design the health exchange, and was defined by a group of federal officials and technical experts in late October. It is now guiding the work of hundreds of government employees and contractors racing to try to repair the balky website by the

administration’s Nov. 30 deadline. Whether the government meets the benchmark — and whether the public regards it as adequate — will be a central factor in President Barack Obama’s efforts to increase support for the controversial healthcare law and lure customers to the federal insurance marketplace. A d m i n i s t r at ion of f ic i a l s acknowledge that until recently, they had no concrete definition for how well healthcare.gov should work, but they say one would not

have made sense before the site went live Oct. 1. “We are very focused on measuring performance of the site now and moving forward and making sure we have ways to demonstrate progress,” said Julie Bataille, communications director for the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services, a branch of the Department of Health and Human Services with responsibility for the insurance exchange. NASA Aims for Mars, With MAVEN Probe Set to Soar Cape Canaveral, Fla.

Meanwhile ...

NASA hopes its newest Mars spacecraft lives up to its know-itall name. The robotic explorer called MAVEN is due to blast off aboard an unmanned rocket today on a 10-month journey to the red planet. There, it will orbit Mars and study the atmosphere to try to understand how the planet morphed from warm and wet to cold and dry.

When its solar wings are extended, Maven stretches 37.5 feet — about the length of a school bus. It weighs 5,410 pounds, the same weight as an SUV. Attached to one of MAVEN’s solar wings is a DVD containing more than 100,000 names submitted by the public, as well as more than 1,000 Japanese-style haiku verses and 377 student art contest entries. (AP)

“A maven is a trusted expert,” noted NASA’s space science chief, John Grunsfeld. MAVEN will help scientists “build a story of the Mars atmosphere and help future human explorers who journey to Mars.” The $671 million mission is NASA’s 21st crack at Earth’s most enticing neighbor, coming on the heels of the Curiosity rover, still rolling strong a year after its arrival. MAVEN — short for Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution, with

a capital N in EvolutioN — is the first spacecraft devoted entirely to studying Mars’ upper atmosphere. When it reaches Mars next September, it will join three spacecraft, two U.S. and one European. An Indian orbiter also will be arriving about the same time. MAVEN will be the 10th orbiter to be launched to Mars by NASA; three have failed, testimony to the difficulty of the task. Early Mars had an atmosphere thick enough to hold water and

moist clouds, said chief investigator Bruce Jakosky of the University of Colorado’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics in Boulder. Indeed, water flowed once upon a time on Mars, and microbial life might have existed. “But somehow that atmosphere changed over time to the cold, dry environment that we see today,” Jakosky said. “What we don’t know is what the driver of that change has been.” MARCIA DUNN (AP)

Improve Depressive Symptoms Faster ?

NIH Research Studies with Ketamine to Quickly Reduce Symptoms

Standard antidepressant medications can take weeks or months to achieve their full effects. Several studies seek to better understand the causes of depression and evaluate the mechanisms in the brain that are related to rapid antidepressant improvement. These studies enroll depressed persons between the ages of 18 and 65 for an inpatient period of 2- to 3-months. Researchers will evaluate how the experimental medication ketamine, versus placebo, affects glutamate in the brain and whether a rapid reduction of antidepressant symptoms (within hours) can be achieved and sustained.

Haiyan Relief Gives U.S. Image a Boost Typhoon victims hail American aid efforts in devastated areas

Meanwhile ... Philippine President Benigno Aquino III said Sunday that he will stay in typhoon-battered Leyte province until he sees more progress in the aid effort following complaints from survivors that they have yet to receive proper help. Aquino is expected to set up camp in Tacloban, the capital of Leyte province, but it is not clear where he will find suitable accommodations. Virtually every building in the city was damaged or destroyed by Typhoon Haiyan on Nov. 8. Electricity is available only in small pockets through diesel generators. There is no running water, and people must manage with water supplied by tankers. (AP)

In the week since the disaster, the Philippines has started to receive support from military forces around the region. But none has come close to matching the U.S. Equally important, America’s regional rival China has not sent any military personnel, and contributed relatively tiny financial aid. “This is being done in a big way that highlights the meager response of China — that’s the politics there. This is the new orientation of the task forces.” For U.S. allies like the Philippines, Vietnam, South Korea, Thailand and to some extent Indonesia, it is an affirmation of U.S. commitment. For others who are more closely aligned with China, Casiple said the mission is a not-so-subtle message that the U.S remains the biggest power in the region.

Man Who Hid Nazi Art Trove Wants It Back Collector who kept priceless cache in Germany speaks out Berlin The recluse German collector who kept a priceless trove of art, possibly including works stolen by the Nazis, hidden for half a century says he did so because he “loved” them and that he wants them back. Cornelius Gurlitt told German magazine Der Spiegel in an interview published Sunday that he wanted to protect the collection built up by his late father Hildebrand, an art dealer commissioned by the Nazis to sell works that Adolf Hitler’s regime wanted to get rid of. Bavarian authorities say they suspect the elder Gurlitt may have acquired pictures taken from Jews by the Nazis — and that this may lead to restitution claims by the original owners or their heirs. Gurlitt told Der Spiegel that everybody needs something to love.

Backstory Officials were unaware of Cornelius Gurlitt’s collection until a chance customs check three years ago led them to his apartment. Authorities kept the find secret for more than a year and a half. But since the case was revealed by the German magazine Focus two weeks ago, they have come under pressure to find a solution that will prevent legal obstacles from standing in the way of rightful claims to the art. (AP)

“And I loved nothing more in life than my pictures,” the magazine quoted him as saying. Off icials are investigating whether Gurlitt may have “misappropriated” the pictures or committed tax offenses in connection with them. But Gurlitt told Der Spiegel that he won’t just hand over the art. “I won’t talk to them, and I’m not giving anything back voluntarily, no, no,” he is quoted as saying. FR ANK JORDANS (AP)

U.S. Traffic Deaths Rise Fatalities among non-car drivers fuels first spike since 2005 Transportation Fatal accidents that killed motorcyclists, bike riders and pedestrians helped drive up the number of U.S. traffic fatalities in 2012 for the first time since 2005, according to federal data released Thursday. Higher death rates among those who travel the roadways on two wheels or on foot accounted for more than half of the increase, and 28 percent of the total number of 33,561 people killed last

The Region The District joined 13 states in recording fewer traffic fatalities, while Maryland and Virginia saw increases. D.C. had 15 fatalities, down from 27 in 2011. Virginia had 777, up from 764 the year before. Maryland had 505 deaths, 20 more than in 2011. (T WP)

year, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The overall death toll rose by 1,802 deaths over 2011, and that total was increased by 657 additional deaths of motorcyclists, bike riders and pedestrians. The

9,426 deaths of road users in those three categories were only slightly eclipsed by the number of deaths attributed to drunken driving: 10,322. “While highway deaths continue to remain at historic lows … 2012 data tells us that we still have a great deal of work to do,” NHTSA Administrator David Strickland said. “Americans are still driving drunk, are still driving distracted and aren’t always wearing their seat belts.” In addition to the deaths, the data showed that nearly 2.4 million people were injured in crashes last year, a 6.5 percent increase from 2011.

Business, Labor Look to McAuliffe “I’m optimistic Terry McAuliffe will be a pro-business governor.” — BA RRY D u VA L , PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF THE VIRGINIA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, WHICH HAS A MEMBERSHIP OF ABOUT 13,500 BUSINESSES.

Washington Virginia’s top corporate executives, including many who have backed Republicans before, are betting that Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe will be good for business. Top union leaders think he’s their man, too. Can McAuliffe satisfy both? While unions were pouring money and muscle into electing McAuliffe, he was busy promising to uphold the state’s antiunion “right-to-work” law and winning endorsements from business groups. As a result, both big business and big labor consider

McAuliffe an ally, each convinced that he could not have won without its support. Although corporate executives and union leaders express confidence that McAuliffe can somehow be both pro-business and pro-labor, there are signs that McAuliffe is still trying to find the right balance after running as a liberal Democrat on some issues and promising to govern as a centrist on others. McAuliffe has found himself in a somewhat similar situation on the abortion issue. He campaigned hard

as a defender of abortion rights but then angered women’s groups when reports surfaced that he was courting Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell’s health and human resources secretary, Bill Hazel, to stay on. Besides pushing to expand Medicaid coverage under the Affordable Care Act, McAuliffe is expected to use executive appointments and regulatory policy to alter the balance between business and labor, union leaders said. But above all, union leaders said organized labor strongly backed McAuliffe to send

a message beyond Virginia. “If we’re able to elect a business-friendly progressive in the commonwealth of Virginia,” said Harold Schaitberger, general president of the D.C.-based International Association of Fire Fighters, then it “may be a reflection or a harbinger of where we see ourselves going in 2014.” During the campaign, McAuliffe chose his words carefully when discussing organized labor. Touring a Metro station under construction, McAuliffe declined to say whether he would defend Virginia’s right-towork law, which bans compulsory union membership as a condition of employment. Later, McAuliffe made clear that the state’s right-to-work law is here to stay.

Marching Orders

A football coach at Annandale High School has agreed to apologize to the school’s marching band, the Annandale Atoms, after he stormed the field on Nov. 8 during halftime and demanded the band stop midperformance and exit the field so his team could warm up, reports News4-TV. On Thursday, Nov. 14, the high school’s principal apologized for the actions of Coach Michael Scott and said Scott would issue his own apology sometime this week for, well, not allowing the band to march to the beat of their own drummer. The General Services Administration on Friday formally opened a search for a new campus for an FBI headquarters, saying it is looking for 50 acres within two miles of a Metro station and two-and-a-half miles of the Capital Beltway. The FBI says its current home at the J. Edgar Hoover Building no longer fits its needs, and the GSA has already solicited ideas from developers and local governments about how it might trade the building for a new headquarters. Months later, the GSA is now specifying what locations it will consider, narrowing the parts of the region that are eligible to receive the FBI’s 11,000 headquarters jobs. Among the minimum requirements the GSA will require property that can accommodate 2.1 million square feet of office and related space and level V security protection. The requirements closely track

those in a resolution set by a Senate committee in 2011, but they would eliminate the possibility that the FBI could relocate farther into Northern Virginia, such as to Culpepper or Stafford counties. GSA set a Dec. 17 deadline for proposals. The agency hopes to narrow the list of locations early next year, seek a development partner in mid-2014 and select a partner to build the new FBI campus in 2015. The Arlington County Board said Saturday that it wants to use tax tools to help nonprofit developers pay for affordable housing along the rapidly developing Columbia Pike. Board members said the proposal would capture 25 percent of any new real-estate taxes and dedicate that money to a fund that would pay for infrastructure and fees, thus allowing nonprofit developers, who build most of Arlington’s affordable housing, to qualify for tax credits. D.C. Insurance Official Fired After Statement D.C. Insurance Commissioner William White was fired Friday, a day after he questioned President Barack Obama’s announcement that canceled insurance policies can be extended for a year. White issued a statement Thursday about Obama’s announcement on the health insurance exchanges, saying the change “undercuts the purpose of the exchanges.” D.C. officials wouldn’t comment on White’s departure, saying they don’t comment on personnel issues. RGIII Picked Apart

The Redskins’ late comeback fell short and Washington lost 24-16 to the Eagles on Sunday. Down 24-0 in the fourth quarter, the Redskins rallied behind Robert Griffin III’s touchdown passes of 62 yards to Darrel Young and 41 yards to Aldrick Robinson, converting both 2-point conversions. RGIII then drove the Redskins to the Eagles’ 18 before his pass off his back foot was intercepted by Brandon Boykin. Philly improved to 6-5 and are first in the NFC East — a half-game ahead of idle Dallas (5-5). The defending division champion Redskins are 3-7, last place in the NFC East. (AP)

Worst First-Half Stat The Redskins had 10 days to prepare for Sunday’s game, and this was the result: Griffin had 26 passing yards, and the Redskins lost 22 yards on three sacks by halftime.

PENALTY YARDS

68 39 The Stars

Best Momentum Changer An RGIII to Darrel Young 62-yard TD pass early in the fourth quarter. A well-timed pause after the catch forced Trent Cole and Patrick Chung to collide, giving Young a clear path to the end zone for the Redskins’ first points of the game.

In the first half, Morris was the only reason the Redskins were moving the ball on offense. He finished with 93 yards on 22 carries. Because of the score, he saw little action after halftime.

Sunday’s Best & Worst

EAGLES RB

The leading rusher in the NFL repeatedly made Redskins defenders miss, racing for 77 yards and two touchdowns on the ground and an additional 73 yards receiving. (EXPRESS)

The Redskins quarterback, always and forever. Robert Griffin III in the first quarter had a gain of 14 yards and a first down, followed by an awkward slide. But hey, at least he’s sliding.

Worst Continuation Of a Trend Redskins safety E.J. Biggers was flagged for a helmet-to-helmet hit on DeSean Jackson on the first defensive possession. That keeps happening in the Redskins’ secondary, no matter who is playing.

Worst Ending

Worst Matchup Ryan Kerrigan is a very talented player, but it’s not a good idea for him to be covering the NFL’s most dangerous running back in one-on-one situations. LeSean McCoy ran right past Kerrigan out of the backfield, and Nick Foles found him for a long completion. Philadelphia scored two plays later.

MATT SLOCUM (AP)

LeSean McCoy

Best Awkward Slide

First, the Redskins’ team bus got egged by Eagles fans on the way into the stadium. Later on, LeSean McCoy showed how tough he is during pregame activities by grabbing a Redskins fan’s banner, balling it up and throwing it to the ground. Stay classy, Philly.

Best Body Sacrifice RGIII, forgoing all fears of bodily injury, kept the ball on the 2-point conversion and dove into the end zone over multiple defenders, landing on this back and scaring all of Washington for about two seconds.

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was sacked four times for a loss of 28 yards as Washington fell to the Eagles on Sunday.

Worst Welcome to Town

Aldrick Robinson, with an incredible catch in the end zone after a 41-yard pass from RGIII that would have fallen just a bit short if not for a well executed dive by Robinson.

Redskins receiver Aldrick Robinson pulls in a 41-yard touchdown pass against the Eagles on Sunday.

All of the momentum came to a crashing halt with seconds left in the game. RGIII made the terrible decision to throw to the end zone on third and one. He just heaved the ball up in the air, leaving it up for grabs. Unfortunately, Eagles cornerback Brandon Boykin was the one who grabbed it. Game over. DAN STEINBERG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Sports All Eyes on RGIII Robert Griffin III struggled with his accuracy all day, from missing a wide-open Logan Paulsen on the Redskins’ first drive, to his final throw of the game — a desperation pass to the back of the end zone that ended up in the hands of Eagles cornerback Brandon Boykin. Entering Week 11, Griffin ranked 17th in the NFL with a 60.8 completion percentage. Sunday’s game was the third time this year he completed 50 percent of his passes or fewer in a game. (E XPRESS)

NFL Week 11 37 27

Robbie Gould kicked a 38-yard field goal to lift the Chicago Bears (6-4) to a victory over Baltimore on Sunday in a game delayed about two hours by a torrential downpour. Justin Tucker tied it for the Ravens (4-6) with a 21-yard field goal at the end of regulation. The big delay came after Tucker kicked a 52-yard field goal with 4:51 remaining in the first quarter. Players headed to the locker rooms as heavy rains and winds whipped through Soldier Field.

Ben Roethlisberger passed for 367 yards and four touchdowns, including two in the final 5 minutes as the Pittsburgh Steelers rallied to beat the Detroit Lions. Antonio Brown caught seven passes for 147 yards and two scores and Pittsburgh’s defense rebounded from a horrific second quarter to shut out Detroit in the second half. The Steelers (4-6) have won two straight and kept the Lions (6-4) winless in Pittsburgh for 58 years.

41 20 Andy Dalton threw two TD passes and Cincinnati returned a blocked punt and a fumble for touchdowns during a 31point second quarter that set a Bengals record and sent the AFC North leaders to a victory over the Cleveland Browns (4-6). The Bengals (7-4) head into their bye week with their division lead intact. They’d lost their last two games in overtime.

Bears running back Matt Forte ran for 83 yards and had 42 yards and a touchdown receiving against the Ravens.

The Jets (5-5) became the NFL’s first team to alternate wins and losses through the first 10 games of the season.

Entering Sunday’s game, the Bucs running back had 21 career carries and Tampa Bay had only two rushing touchdowns all season. In the win over the Falcons, Rainey carried the ball 30 times for 163 yards and scored twice.

The Lions star receiver had his fifth 100-yard game of the season, going for 179 yards on six catches in a loss to the Steelers. Over the past four games, Johnson has 746 yards and seven touchdowns, but Detroit has lost two of those contests.

The Steelers quarterback had his second fourtouchdown game of November, throwing for 367 yards in a win over the Lions. He mounted his 31st comeback victory of his 10-year career with a 97-yard, go-ahead drive. (EXPRESS)

Carson Palmer threw for 419 yards to nine players, and all of them played for the Arizona Cardinals. Palmer did not throw an interception for the first time this year, and the Cardinals’ defense stiffened in the second half of a victory over the Jaguars. Arizona (6-4) won its third straight game. The Jaguars (1-9) at least scored a TD at home for the first time this year.

Johnson Wins Sprint Cup Title No. 48 driver claims NASCAR’s top prize for the sixth time NASCAR

The Czech Republic beat Serbia 3-2 in the Davis Cup final Sunday.

JARED C. TILTON (GETTY IMAGES)

Back on top with only two NASCAR greats left to catch, Jimmie Johnson won his sixth championship in eight years Sunday and staked his claim as one of the most dominant competitors in sports history. Johnson, needing only to finish 23rd or better to spoil Matt Kenseth’s career season, was on cruise control most of the day at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Johnson had just one hiccup en route to his ninth-place finish, when a stack up on a restart caused Johnson and Kenseth to bang slightly, costing Johnson 15 spots. Johnson only dropped to 23rd in the field. A caution allowed him to head to pit road, where crew chief Chad Knaus methodically barked commands to repair the damage. Johnson was soon off and running as if nothing had happened.

Jimmie Johnson celebrated his sixth championship in eight years Sunday. He is now just one behind the all-time record.

He claimed the championship by 19 points over Kenseth. Now looming squarely in Johnson’s windshield is the mark of seven titles held by Richard Petty and the late Dale Earnhardt. “I have six, and we’ll see if I can get seven,” said Johnson, who

has been asked repeatedly of late where he thinks he stands in NASCAR history. “Time will tell. I think we need to save the argument until I hang up the helmet, then it’s worth the argument,” he said. “Let’s wait until I hang up the helmet until we

really start thinking about this.” Kenseth, needing a Johnson collapse to have any shot at the title, positioned himself to pounce should anything go awry. He led a race-high 144 laps and finished second to Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin. JENNA FRYER (AP)

Czechs Hold on to Davis Cup Tennis The Czech Republic retained the Davis Cup title by beating Serbia 3-2 in the final Sunday after Radek Stepanek swept past Dusan Lajovic in the decisive singles match. The Czech veteran beat the 117th-ranked Lajovic 6-3, 6-1, 6-1, converting his first match point with a volley. That sent about a thousand visiting Czech fans at Kombank Arena in Belgrade, Serbia, into wild celebrations, blowing trumpets and beating their drums. Stepanek spread his hands on the court as Tomas Berdych and other Czech teammates mobbed him. The Czechs won their second straight Davis Cup title, with last year being its first as an independent nation. Serbia won its only crown in 2010, beating France in Belgrade. Lajovic, who has a 5-12 record on the ATP tour and had never played in the Davis Cup before this weekend, replaced Janko Tipsarevic, who missed the final with a heel injury. The Czechs got the crucial point in Saturday’s doubles to go up 2-1. Second-ranked Novak Djokovic then kept alive Serbia’s hopes by beating Berdych 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-2 on Sunday to improve his career record against the Czech to 15-2. “We both entered this match with a lot of tension,” Djokovic said. “I managed to break his resistance in the second set.” DUSAN STOJANOVIC (AP)

VFW Foundation Helps Meet Needs of Veterans and Families Sherry’s husband, a Marine Private First Class, has been in Afghanistan for more than a year. Sherry does her best to care for the couple’s two small children though it’s tough trying to work and pay for childcare. In April 2013, she lost her job at a manufacturing facility that suddenly closed. Shortly thereafter, her fifteen-year-old car suffered a blown transmission. Out of work and without transportation to find a new job, Sherry was facing great adversity. She has no family in the area, as she moved to California from Pittsburgh to be with her husband at the Camp Pendleton Marine base. Though Sherry is a member of a spouse support group at the base, she was hesitant and too proud to ask for help. Finally, she tearfully revealed her situation to a fellow military spouse. Luckily, that woman had heard of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Foundation’s Unmet Needs program and helped Sherry contact us for support. We were able to pay for the transmission

A Beatle and a Boat A new app explores John Lennon’s 1980 ocean trek via music, photos and interviews Technology Six months before he died, John Lennon set sail from Newport, R.I., on an ocean adventure to Bermuda that reawakened his desire to make music. The journey is now being chronicled in an electronic format he never could have imagined. A new app, “John Lennon: The Bermuda Tapes,” will be for sale on Apple devices Thursday for $4.99. It’s loaded with interactive features, music, photos and interviews that

detail a relatively unexamined slice of Lennon’s post-Beatles life. Users of the app can simulate the six-day journey through the recollections of two crew members and Lennon himself, from a Playboy interview conducted shortly after the trip. They can eavesdrop on the creative process as Lennon’s last recordings took shape. The director of the project,

f i l m ma ker Michael Epstei n (“LennoNYC”), said he wanted to recreate the experience of becoming immersed in a record album, which he feels is lost in a world of electronic music files. “That relationship that MP3s have severed, we tried to put back together,” he said. Lennon’s wife, Yoko Ono, had encouraged him to take the Bermu-

da trip in June 1980, and it turned into a deeply cathartic experience. “He was a macho guy in a very old-fashioned way and he just wanted to conquer things,” Ono said. “And he did. It was amazing.” A few days into the trip, the boat ran into a strong storm. Two crew members became violently seasick and the captain, Hank Halsted, was overcome by exhaustion. A rock star was left to keep the “Megan Jaye” afloat despite the wind and waves. The crew members remember Lennon singing sea chanteys as he steered the ship to safety. The experience gave Lennon pride at a time in his life when he was struggling with self-confidence. “It opened up a kind of frozen part of his soul and he started creating,” Ono said. When Lennon later heard the B-52’s song “Rock Lobster” — which reminded him of his wife’s music — at a disco, he excitedly called Ono back in New York. Soon after, they started writing songs together, and the results became the “Double Fantasy” album. With the archival material available, Epstein and his partners found the story a great creative starting point for their “Bermuda Tapes” app. Epstein said the technology has the potential to create immersive experiences for artists of all kinds. “This is an opportunity to take music to a new place,” he said. “John Lennon: The Bermuda Tapes” lets users access music, photos and maps to retrace Lennon’s ocean journey.

Oliver Hits HBO: John Oliver is getting his own weekly show on HBO after a winning turn as substitute host for Jon Stewart on “The Daily Show.” Next year, the British comedian’s Sunday night program will take a satirical look at the week’s events. HBO president Michael Lombardo said Oliver’s deft “Daily Show” stint convinced him his “distinct voice” belonged on the channel. The launch date and title for the new show have not been announced. Netflix Revives ‘The Killing’

drama for its conclusion, producer Fox Television Studios said. “The K illing,” based on a Danish series and developed by Veena Sud, has had a rocky history. AMC canceled it after a second-year ratings slump, reversed its decision and then axed it again after the third season aired in the summer. In “The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds,” Link must escape his 2-D form.

A Linking of Old and New Nintendo’s new 3-D ‘Zelda’ brilliantly adds dimension to a classic Video Games For nearly three decades, spikeyeared hero Link has captained a boat, mastered a magic flute and flown a giant bird in the name of rescuing Princess Zelda from dastardly foes. In his latest quest, he’s morphing into walls. That may sound like a flat development for the wholly untarnished “Legend of Zelda” franchise, but it’s as “aha!”-inspiring as previous installments. “The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds,” ($39.99 for the Nintendo 3DS and 2DS, out Friday) starts with a villain named Yuga storming the kingdom of Hyrule and transforming the game’s land and its characters into 2-D illustrations. With his newfound 3-D ability, the blacksmith’s apprentice can slip into mountain sides and move across chasms or fling himself into castle walls to slip through tiny crevices. It’s a simple twist that opens up a breathtaking array of

mind-bending spatial puzzles, the kind that captured the public’s imagination long before any candy-crushing sagas. The other major switcheroo is that “A Link Between Worlds” is almost completely a nonlinear experience. The lack of handholding gives players the freedom to explore Hyrule (and its creepy sister, Lorule) in any order they choose. Over the past three years, there’s been several “Legend of Zelda” releases unleashed by Nintendo for the 3DS. None of those has been as captivating as “A Link Between Worlds,” an original “Legend of Zelda” epic created especially for the glasses-free 3DS. “Zelda” mastermind Eiji Aonuma and his development team have thoughtfully crafted a game that really should be experienced in 3-D. That “A Link Between Worlds” is exactly what anyone could want out of a hand-held “Zelda” adventure is also its greatest deficiency. The game’s open 3-D world is a welcome change to the beenthere-grabbed-that formula of past “Zelda” titles. There’s nothing all that unexpected about “A Link Between Worlds.” DERRIK J. LANG (AP)
