Chicago Dozens of tornadoes and intense thunderstorms swept across the Midwest on Sunday, causing extensive damage in several central Illinois communities, killing at least three people and prompting officials at Chicago’s Soldier Field to evacuate the stands and delay the Bears game. “The whole neighborhood’s gone. The wall of my fireplace is all that is left of my house,” said Michael Perdun, speaking by cellphone from the hardhit town of Washington, where he said his neighborhood was wiped out in a matter of seconds. “I stepped outside and I heard it coming. My daughter was already in the basement, so I ran downstairs and grabbed her, crouched in the laundry room and all of a sudden I could see daylight up the stairway and my house was gone.” An elderly man and his sister were killed when a tornado hit their home around noon in the rural community of New Minden, said Mark Styninger, the coroner of Washington County in southern Illinois. And Steve Brewer, chief operating officer at Methodist Medical Center of Illinois in Peoria, said that four or five people had come to the hospital seeking treatment, but he described their injuries as minor. He said another area hospital had received about 15 patients, but did not know the severity of their injuries. Just how many tornadoes hit was unclear Sunday afternoon. According to the National Weather Services’ website, a total of 59 tornadoes had struck, the bulk of them in Illinois. But meteorologist Matt Friedlein said the total might fall because emergen-

According to agency officials, parts of Illinois, Indiana, southern Michigan and western Ohio were at the greatest risk of seeing tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds throughout the day Sunday. The goal for how many people should be able to make it through the insurance exchange is an internal target that administration officials have not made public. It

NASA hopes its newest Mars spacecraft lives up to its know-itall name. The robotic explorer called MAVEN is due to blast off aboard an unmanned rocket today on a 10-month journey to the red planet. There, it will orbit Mars and study the atmosphere to try to understand how the planet morphed from warm and wet to cold and dry.
When its solar wings are extended, Maven stretches 37.5 feet — about the length of a school bus. It weighs 5,410 pounds, the same weight as an SUV. Attached to one of MAVEN’s solar wings is a DVD containing more than 100,000 names submitted by the public, as well as more than 1,000 Japanese-style haiku verses and 377 student art contest entries. “A maven is a trusted expert,” noted NASA’s space science chief, John Grunsfeld. MAVEN will help scientists “build a story of the Mars atmosphere and help future human explorers who journey to Mars.” The $671 million mission is NASA’s 21st crack at Earth’s most enticing neighbor, coming on the heels of the Curiosity rover, still rolling strong a year after its arrival. MAVEN — short for Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution, with
a capital N in EvolutioN — is the first spacecraft devoted entirely to studying Mars’ upper atmosphere. When it reaches Mars next September, it will join three spacecraft, two U.S. and one European. An Indian orbiter also will be arriving about the same time. MAVEN will be the 10th orbiter to be launched to Mars by NASA; three have failed, testimony to the difficulty of the task. Early Mars had an atmosphere thick enough to hold water and
moist clouds, said chief investigator Bruce Jakosky of the University of Colorado’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics in Boulder. Man Who Hid Nazi Art Trove Wants It Back Collector who kept priceless cache in Germany speaks out Berlin The recluse German collector who kept a priceless trove of art, possibly including works stolen by the Nazis, hidden for half a century says he did so because he “loved” them and that he wants them back. Cornelius Gurlitt told German magazine Der Spiegel in an interview published Sunday that he wanted to protect the collection built up by his late father Hildebrand, an art dealer commissioned by the Nazis to sell works that Adolf Hitler’s regime wanted to get rid of. Bavarian authorities say they suspect the elder Gurlitt may have acquired pictures taken from Jews by the Nazis — and that this may lead to restitution claims by the original owners or their heirs. Gurlitt told Der Spiegel that everybody needs something to love.
Backstory Officials were unaware of Cornelius Gurlitt’s collection until a chance customs check three years ago led them to his apartment. Authorities kept the find secret for more than a year and a half. But since the case was revealed by the German magazine Focus two weeks ago, they have come under pressure to find a solution that will prevent legal obstacles from standing in the way of rightful claims to the art. Washington Virginia’s top corporate executives, including many who have backed Republicans before, are betting that Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe will be good for business. Top union leaders think he’s their man, too. Can McAuliffe satisfy both? While unions were pouring money and muscle into electing McAuliffe, he was busy promising to uphold the state’s antiunion “right-to-work” law and winning endorsements from business groups. As a result, both big business and big labor consider
McAuliffe an ally, each convinced that he could not have won without its support. Although corporate executives and union leaders express confidence that McAuliffe can somehow be both pro-business and pro-labor, there are signs that McAuliffe is still trying to find the right balance after running as a liberal Democrat on some issues and promising to govern as a centrist on others. McAuliffe has found himself in a somewhat similar situation on the abortion issue. He campaigned hard

as a defender of abortion rights but then angered women’s groups when reports surfaced that he was courting Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell’s health and human resources secretary, Bill Hazel, to stay on. Besides pushing to expand Medicaid coverage under the Affordable Care Act, McAuliffe is expected to use executive appointments and regulatory policy to alter the balance between business and labor, union leaders said. But above all, union leaders said organized labor strongly backed McAuliffe to send
a message beyond Virginia. “If we’re able to elect a business-friendly progressive in the commonwealth of Virginia,” said Harold Schaitberger, general president of the D.C.-based International Association of Fire Fighters, then it “may be a reflection or a harbinger of where we see ourselves going in 2014.” During the campaign, McAuliffe chose his words carefully when discussing organized labor. Touring a Metro station under construction, McAuliffe declined to say whether he would defend Virginia’s right-towork law, which bans compulsory union membership as a condition of employment. Later, McAuliffe made clear that the state’s right-to-work law is here to stay.

A football coach at Annandale High School has agreed to apologize to the school’s marching band, the Annandale Atoms, after he stormed the field on Nov. 8 during halftime and demanded the band stop midperformance and exit the field so his team could warm up, reports News4-TV. On Thursday, Nov. 14, the high school’s principal apologized for the actions of Coach Michael Scott and said Scott would issue his own apology sometime this week for, well, not allowing the band to march to the beat of their own drummer. The General Services Administration on Friday formally opened a search for a new campus for an FBI headquarters, saying it is looking for 50 acres within two miles of a Metro station and two-and-a-half miles of the Capital Beltway. The FBI says its current home at the J. Edgar Hoover Building no longer fits its needs, and the GSA has already solicited ideas from developers and local governments about how it might trade the building for a new headquarters. Months later, the GSA is now specifying what locations it will consider, narrowing the parts of the region that are eligible to receive the FBI’s 11,000 headquarters jobs. Among the minimum requirements the GSA will require property that can accommodate 2.1 million square feet of office and related space and level V security protection. The requirements closely track

The Arlington County Board said Saturday that it wants to use tax tools to help nonprofit developers pay for affordable housing along the rapidly developing Columbia Pike. Board members said the proposal would capture 25 percent of any new real-estate taxes and dedicate that money to a fund that would pay for infrastructure and fees, thus allowing nonprofit developers, who build most of Arlington’s affordable housing, to qualify for tax credits. Robbie Gould kicked a 38-yard field goal to lift the Chicago Bears (6-4) to a victory over Baltimore on Sunday in a game delayed about two hours by a torrential downpour. Justin Tucker tied it for the Ravens (4-6) with a 21-yard field goal at the end of regulation. The big delay came after Tucker kicked a 52-yard field goal with 4:51 remaining in the first quarter. Players headed to the locker rooms as heavy rains and winds whipped through Soldier Field.
Ben Roethlisberger passed for 367 yards and four touchdowns, including two in the final 5 minutes as the Pittsburgh Steelers rallied to beat the Detroit Lions. Antonio Brown caught seven passes for 147 yards and two scores and Pittsburgh’s defense rebounded from a horrific second quarter to shut out Detroit in the second half. The Steelers (4-6) have won two straight and kept the Lions (6-4) winless in Pittsburgh for 58 years.

Back on top with only two NASCAR greats left to catch, Jimmie Johnson won his sixth championship in eight years Sunday and staked his claim as one of the most dominant competitors in sports history. Johnson, needing only to finish 23rd or better to spoil Matt Kenseth’s career season, was on cruise control most of the day at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Johnson had just one hiccup en route to his ninth-place finish, when a stack up on a restart caused Johnson and Kenseth to bang slightly, costing Johnson 15 spots. Johnson only dropped to 23rd in the field. A caution allowed him to head to pit road, where crew chief Chad Knaus methodically barked commands to repair the damage. Johnson was soon off and running as if nothing had happened.

Czechs Hold on to Davis Cup Tennis The Czech Republic retained the Davis Cup title by beating Serbia 3-2 in the final Sunday after Radek Stepanek swept past Dusan Lajovic in the decisive singles match. The Czech veteran beat the 117th-ranked Lajovic 6-3, 6-1, 6-1, converting his first match point with a volley. That sent about a thousand visiting Czech fans at Kombank Arena in Belgrade, Serbia, into wild celebrations, blowing trumpets and beating their drums. VFW Foundation Helps Meet Needs of Veterans and Families Sherry’s husband, a Marine Private First Class, has been in Afghanistan for more than a year. Sherry does her best to care for the couple’s two small children though it’s tough trying to work and pay for childcare. In April 2013, she lost her job at a manufacturing facility that suddenly closed. Shortly thereafter, her fifteen-year-old car suffered a blown transmission. Out of work and without transportation to find a new job, Sherry was facing great adversity. She has no family in the area, as she moved to California from Pittsburgh to be with her husband at the Camp Pendleton Marine base. Though Sherry is a member of a spouse support group at the base, she was hesitant and too proud to ask for help. Finally, she tearfully revealed her situation to a fellow military spouse. Luckily, that woman had heard of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Foundation’s Unmet Needs program and helped Sherry contact us for support. We were able to pay for the transmission
repair and thereafter Sherry soon found employment as an Executive Assistant in a nearby office complex. This true story is just one of the hundreds we try to positively resolve each month, whether it’s: • providing aid to troops and their families with a one-time grant to pay for rent, mortgage, utilities, vehicle repair, medical expenses and food/ basic assistance (over $4.6 million awarded so far); • facilitating regular telephone communications for deployed troops and their families back home (a typical month provides over 100,000 conversations, approximately 1.3 million minutes of talk-time); or • holding morale boosting “welcome home” or “sendoff” events for military units including VIP treatment at sporting and entertainment venues In practical terms, a $10 donation by
VFW members at a “welcome home” event greet U.S. troops returning home from deployment.

A Beatle and a Boat A new app explores John Lennon’s 1980 ocean trek via music, photos and interviews Technology Six months before he died, John Lennon set sail from Newport, R.I., on an ocean adventure to Bermuda that reawakened his desire to make music. The journey is now being chronicled in an electronic format he never could have imagined. A new app, “John Lennon: The Bermuda Tapes,” will be for sale on Apple devices Thursday for $4.99. It’s loaded with interactive features, music, photos and interviews that
detail a relatively unexamined slice of Lennon’s post-Beatles life. Users of the app can simulate the six-day journey through the recollections of two crew members and Lennon himself, from a Playboy interview conducted shortly after the trip. They can eavesdrop on the creative process as Lennon’s last recordings took shape. The director of the project,
f i l m ma ker Michael Epstei n (“LennoNYC”), said he wanted to recreate the experience of becoming immersed in a record album, which he feels is lost in a world of electronic music files. “That relationship that MP3s have severed, we tried to put back together,” he said. Lennon’s wife, Yoko Ono, had encouraged him to take the Bermu-
da trip in June 1980, and it turned into a deeply cathartic experience. “He was a macho guy in a very old-fashioned way and he just wanted to conquer things,” Ono said. “And he did. It was amazing.” A few days into the trip, the boat ran into a strong storm. Two crew members became violently seasick and the captain, Hank Halsted, was overcome by exhaustion. A rock star was left to keep the “Megan Jaye” afloat despite the wind and waves. The crew members remember Lennon singing sea chanteys as he steered the ship to safety. The experience gave Lennon pride at a time in his life when he was struggling with self-confidence. “It opened up a kind of frozen part of his soul and he started creating,” Ono said. When Lennon later heard the B-52’s song “Rock Lobster” — which reminded him of his wife’s music — at a disco, he excitedly called Ono back in New York. Soon after, they started writing songs together, and the results became the “Double Fantasy” album. With the archival material available, Epstein and his partners found the story a great creative starting point for their “Bermuda Tapes” app. Epstein said the technology has the potential to create immersive experiences for artists of all kinds. “This is an opportunity to take music to a new place,” he said. A Linking of Old and New Nintendo’s new 3-D ‘Zelda’ brilliantly adds dimension to a classic Video Games For nearly three decades, spikeyeared hero Link has captained a boat, mastered a magic flute and flown a giant bird in the name of rescuing Princess Zelda from dastardly foes. In his latest quest, he’s morphing into walls. That may sound like a flat development for the wholly untarnished “Legend of Zelda” franchise, but it’s as “aha!”-inspiring as previous installments. “The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds,” ($39.99 for the Nintendo 3DS and 2DS, out Friday) starts with a villain named Yuga storming the kingdom of Hyrule and transforming the game’s land and its characters into 2-D illustrations. With his newfound 3-D ability, the blacksmith’s apprentice can slip into mountain sides and move across chasms or fling himself into castle walls to slip through tiny crevices. It’s a simple twist that opens up a breathtaking array of
mind-bending spatial puzzles, the kind that captured the public’s imagination long before any candy-crushing sagas. The other major switcheroo is that “A Link Between Worlds” is almost completely a nonlinear experience. The lack of handholding gives players the freedom to explore Hyrule (and its creepy sister, Lorule) in any order they choose. Over the past three years, there’s been several “Legend of Zelda” releases unleashed by Nintendo for the 3DS. None of those has been as captivating as “A Link Between Worlds,” an original “Legend of Zelda” epic created especially for the glasses-free 3DS. “Zelda” mastermind Eiji Aonuma and his development team have thoughtfully crafted a game that really should be experienced in 3-D. That “A Link Between Worlds” is exactly what anyone could want out of a hand-held “Zelda” adventure is also its greatest deficiency. The game’s open 3-D world is a welcome change to the beenthere-grabbed-that formula of past “Zelda” titles. There’s nothing all that unexpected about “A Link Between Worlds.” DERRIK J. LANG (AP)
