Alligator Lived Solely Off Diet Of Deep-Dish Pizza, Cinnabon A small alligator found under an escalator at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport has left authorities puzzled. A maintenance worker discovered the alligator, which is about a foot long, on Friday in Terminal 3, Chicago police spokesman Jose Estrada said Sunday. “We don’t know where it came from or how long it’d been residing in the airport facilities,” he said. Anti-Bias Gay-Rights Bill Clears Senate Hurdle Washington The Senate pushed a major anti-bias gay-rights bill past a first big hurdle Monday, a clear sign of Americans’ greater acceptance of homosexuality nearly two decades after lawmakers narrowly rejected discrimination legislation. On a vote of 61-30, the Senate voted to move ahead on the legislation that would prohibit workplace discrimination against gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. The bipartisan vote increases the chances that the Senate will pass the bill by week’s end, but its prospects in the Republican-led House are dimmer. by one thing only in their workplaces: their ability to get their jobs done,” the president said in a message written for The Huffington Post. “Does it make a difference if the firefighter who rescues you is gay — or the accountant who does your taxes?” Possible passage of the bill would cap a 17-year quest to secure Senate support for the anti-bias measure that failed by one vote in 1996, the same year Congress passed
and President Bill Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act. That law required the federal government to refuse to recognize samesex marriages. Current federal law prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, race and national origin. But it doesn’t stop an employer from firing or refusing to hire workers because they are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. The bill would bar employers with 15 or more workers from using a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity as the basis for making employment decisions. The anti-discrimination bill faces strong opposition from conservative groups and is also opposed by Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and it’s unclear whether the House will even vote on the measure. Boehner’s spokesman Michael Steel said Monday that Boehner “believes this legislation will increase frivolous litigation and cost American jobs.” Twenty-two states and the District of Columbia have approved laws banning workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and 17 of those also prohibit employers from discriminating based on gender identity. LAX Shooting Assessed Rampage could lead to changes in how airports are patrolled Los Angeles The man accused of opening fire at Los Angeles International Airport accomplished two of his goals, according to authorities: killing a Transportation Security Administration officer and showing how easy it is to get a gun into an airport. The deadly rampage left investigators to piece together what motivated Paul Ciancia’s hatred toward the agency formed to make air travel safer after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. But the attack could ultimately lead to changes in the way airports are patrolled. Ciancia, 23, was shot four times by airport police and remains heavi-
ly sedated and under 24-hour armed guard at the hospital, according to a law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity. The unemployed motorcycle mechanic who recently moved to Los Angeles from Pennsville, N.J., had a friend drop him off at LAX on Fr id ay ju st moments before he pulled a .223-caliber assault rifle from his duffel bag and opened fire, killing TSA Ciancia officer Gerardo I. Hernandez and wounding three people, including two more TSA workers. Officials do not believe that the friend knew of the shooter’s plans. Ciancia is charged with murder of a federal officer and committing violence at an international airport,

It wasn’t clear why Ciancia targeted TSA officers, but a letter found in his bag refers to how he believed his rights were being violated by TSA searches and “how easy it is to get a gun into the airport.” TSA Administrator John Pistole said the agency will need to work with each airport’s police agency “to see how we’ll go about in providing the best possible security.” On Monday, Ciancia’s New Jersey relatives offered sympathy to the family of the slain officer and hopes for the recovery of other victims. The TSA said the other two officers wounded in the attack — James Speer, 54, and Tony Grigsby, 36 — were released from the hospital. Brian Ludmer, a high school teacher, remained hospitalized. Morsi Defiant in First Court Appearance Cairo After four months in secret detention, deposed Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi defiantly rejected a court’s authority to put him on trial Monday, saying he still was Egypt’s leader and that those who overthrew him should face charges instead. The trial, which was interrupted twice on its first day by shouting in the raucous courtroom, was then adjourned until Jan. 8 to allow lawyers time to review the case against Morsi and his 14 codefendants — all prominent members of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Morsi had been held at an undisclosed location since the military ousted him in a coup July 3. His appearance in court represented a step by the military-backed authorities toward granting him due process in the face of mounting criticism by rights groups. Defense lawyers said they had access to Morsi and his co-defendants during a recess Monday and that the judge has agreed to allow them access to their clients in jail. The 62-year-old Morsi, who wore a dark blue suit, light shirt and no tie, was feisty and healthy-looking during his court appearance. He had
refused to wear a prison uniform as the judge had ordered, according to security officials, as part of his rejection of the trial’s legitimacy. Morsi and his co-defendants face charges of inciting the killing of protesters who massed outside the presidential palace in December and demanded he call off a referendum on a new constitution drafted by his Islamist allies. World Activists create fake profile of 10-year-old in an Internet sting Amsterdam Enlisting the help of a computer-generated 10-year-old Philippine girl, Dutch children’s rights activists turned online sex predators into their prey. In an online sting operated from an anonymous warehouse office in an Amsterdam industrial park, activists from Terre des Hommes set out to gauge the scale of a fastgrowing Internet phenomenon the Netherlands-based group calls webcam child sex tourism.
The result was shocking, the group’s director of projects Hans Guyt said Monday at the tiny Amsterdam office where Terre des Hommes used the 3-D digital animated girl they dubbed “Sweetie” to unmask 1,000 Internet users they say wanted to pay to watch a child engage in sex acts via webcam. “If we don’t intervene soon, this sinister phenomenon will totally run out of control,” Guyt said. Terre des Hommes has posted a documentary about its 10-week investigation on YouTube and begun a petition aimed at pressing police and politicians to do more to halt such illegal sex shows. Changes to Track Work There may be fewer Metro interruptions during future holidays Washington Metro will use this long Veterans Day weekend to extend its major track-work program, but riders are likely to see schedule improvements on long fall weekends in years ahead. The transit authority is “transitioning away from intensive track work” on Columbus Day and Veterans Day, spokesman Dan Stessel said. During the rebuilding program, Metro has tended to
use almost every three-day weekend available for major track work, the kind that shuts parts of lines. Riders protested that not all holidays are equal. On some federal holidays, Columbus Day and Veterans Day in particular, many private employees need to get to work. The transit rebuilding program that targets weekends is premised on the idea that weekends are times of relatively low ridership, when the impact of disrupting a line should be least. But Metro statistics show that ridership on Columbus Day and Veterans Day tends to be higher than that for other holidays when Metro has scheduled major work. Columbus Day and Veterans Day
also tend to have rush-hour peaks. Though nowhere near the weekday peaks, they are still impressive considering that federal workers normally make up a third of the rush-hour ridership. In keeping with this evolving strategy, there was no track work on this year’s Columbus Day. The schedule was a bit of a hybrid, combining aspects of weekend and weekday service. Metrorail opened at 5 a.m. just like a weekday but operated on a Saturday train schedule and offered free parking. Poll: McAuliffe Holds 6-Point Lead Democrat maintains edge the day before Va. governor’s race Richmond A Quinnipiac University poll released Monday showed that Democratic hopeful Terry McAuliffe has a six percentage point lead in Virginia’s gubernatorial race. Takoma Park’s Teens Set to Vote 16- and 17-year-olds can now take part in municipal elections

Takoma Park, Md. Ben Miller plans to step into a booth at the Takoma Park Community Center today and do something that the country’s other 16-yearolds can’t: cast a vote in an election. He and about 350 other 16- and 17-year-olds were granted the right to vote in municipal elections by the Takoma City Council in May, making the Montgomery County community the nation’s first to lower the voting age from 18 to 16. Even so, there’s hardly been a rush to the ballot box. Takoma Park City Clerk Jessie Carpenter estimates that about 90 16- and 17-year-olds have registered to vote. Still, Miller registered to vote a few weeks ago, and his new civic duty inspired him to accompany his mother to a recent candidate forum at the community center. Asked if he would have gone otherwise, Miller said, “No way!” His engagement is exactly what Takoma Park officials were after when they lowered the voting age. “The question was, ‘How do
we get more people to vote?’ ” said council member Tim Male, who introduced the proposal, one of several reforms to city election rules this year designed to boost turnout. Other changes included sameday registration and allowing paroled felons to vote. Residents living in the country illegally have been allowed to vote in city elections since 1993 — a gesture that barely raises an eyebrow in what’s often dubbed the People’s Republic of Takoma Park. Turnout is especially dismal for local elections, even in the highly political environs of Takoma Park. During the last municipal elections in 2011, a meager 19 percent of eligible voters showed up at the polls, Carpenter said. Miller is aware that he is part of a tiny vanguard. “I understand the apathy. How much of a difference will it really make?” he said. “I’m still excited about the opportunity. Council poised to call on the team to change its name, Washington Redskins management is asking its fans in the District to contact their lawmakers and share “what #RedskinsPride means.” The email sent midday Monday to season-ticket holders is a new acknowledgement from the team of the debate over its name, which has reached a fever pitch in recent months as activists and commentators — including President Barack Obama — have called on the team and the NFL to make a change. “#RedskinsPride” is a reference to the team’s campaign to beat back critics by framing the name in terms

We’ve Got Company NASA study shows that our galaxy alone is home to a host of planets similar to Earth Washington Space is vast, but it may not be so lonely after all: A study finds that the Milky Way is teeming with billions of planets that are about the size of Earth, orbit stars just like our sun, and exist in the Goldilocks zone — not too hot and not too cold for life. Astronomers using NASA data have calculated for the first time that in our galaxy alone, there are at least 8.8 billion stars with Earth-size planets in the habitable temperature zone. The study was published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. For perspective, that’s more Earthlike planets than there are people on Earth. As for what it says about the odds that there is life somewhere out there, it means “just in our Milky Way galaxy alone, that’s 8.8 billion throws of the biological dice,” said study coauthor Geoff Marcy, a longtime planet hunter from the University of California, Berkeley.
The next step, scientists say, is to look for atmospheres on these planets with powerful space telescopes that have yet to be launched. That would yield further clues to whether any of these planets do, in fact, harbor life. “When you look up at the stars in the night sky, how many of them have a planet like the Earth?” asked Erik Petigura, a graduate student at Berkeley and the lead author of the paper. “We’re able to start answering this question.” The findings also raise a blaring question, Marcy said: If we aren’t alone, why is “there a deafening silence in our Milky Way galaxy from advanced civilizations?”

If people on Earth could only travel
in deep space, “you’d probably see a lot of traffic jams,” Bill Borucki, NASA’s chief Kepler scientist, joked Monday. For the first time, scientists calculated — not estimated — what percent of stars that are just like our sun have planets similar to Earth: 22 percent, with a margin of error of plus or minus 8 percentage points. Kepler scientist Natalie Batalha said there is still more data to pore over before this can be considered a final figure. Because there are probably hundreds of planets missed for every one found, the study did intricate extrapolations to come up with the 22 percent figure — a calculation that outside scientists say is fair. “Everything they’ve done looks legitimate,” said MIT astronomer Sara Seager. For the first time all season, Redskins running back Alfred Morris had more than 20 carries in a game Sunday. In 2012, Morris had 20 carries or more in 10 games.
Morris Code to Winning Yes, the Washington Redskins have a running game. The Redskins surely revolve around quarterback Robert Griffin III, but they finally relied on running back Alfred Morris to sustain long drives and fullback Darrel Young to punch in three touchdowns in their 30-24 overtime victory over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. Somehow, a seething public memo over Morris not getting 20 carries even once this season finally reached offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. By Rick Maybe the brutally Snider harsh loss the previous week to Denver forced Shanahan to remember the running game, but Morris and Young showed they’re equally vital to the Redskins (3-5) if Washington has any chance of defending its NFC East crown. Morris rushed for 121 yards and one touchdown on 25 carries. The Redskins rushed for 209
yards on 40 carries. It was like the finishing 7-0 run last year that carried Washington to the playoffs. The only question: What took the Redskins so long to run more often? “It did feel more like last year with the balance,” Griffin said. Not that the passer didn’t have a good day, though a few missed receivers and a batted ball that was intercepted for a touchdown were certainly jarring. But Griffin found room in the lanes for completions of 9, 12 and 17 yards during the overtime drive when the Redskins ran Morris five of nine snaps before Young sealed the win with a 1-yard score.

Morris was averaging a healthy 5.2 yards per carry entering the game. However, Shanahan has sometimes been too passhappy during his 3½ seasons in Washington and forgets he has Washington’s best runner since

perhaps John Riggins. With 686 yards at midseason, Morris is on pace to fall short of last year’s 1,613-yard total. Doubling his 133 carries over the season would also be far fewer than last year’s 335 runs. There’s no reason Morris shouldn’t carry the Redskins when Washington meets Minnesota on Thursday. Morris is the meat and Griffin is the potatoes this season. Skeptics who thought Morris benefited last year from Griffin’s running ability can’t second-guess Morris this time, with Griffin more of a pocket passer. Maybe Griffin will return to his running style next year when he’s relieved of the bulky knee brace, but for now he’s limited to occasional runs. “We have something to believe in,” Griffin said after the win. Texans Say Kubiak Had ‘Dizziness’ NFL Texans coach Gary Kubiak was expected to remain hospitalized until at least today after collapsing on the field at halftime of Houston’s 27-24 loss to Indianapolis. The team said Kubiak, 52, experienced “dizziness and a lightheaded feeling” during Sunday night’s game before being taken by ambulance to a hospital. The Texans have not said what caused the problem, saying only that Kubiak has gone through a battery of tests and is with his family. “Gary is alert, coherent and in good spirits,” general manager Rick Smith said Monday. “He is continuing to be evaluated and monitored.” The reeling Texans, losers of six straight, were left to wonder when Kubiak will return. Dolphins lineman suspended amid claims of bullying NFL Suspended Miami Dolphins guard Richie Incognito sent text messages to teammate Jonathan Martin that were racist and threatening, two people familiar with the situation said Monday. The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Dolphins and the NFL haven’t disclosed the nature of the misconduct that led to Incognito’s suspension.
Martin, a tackle, remained absent from practice Monday one week after he suddenly left the team. Also missing was Incognito, who was suspended indefinitely late Sunday by Miami. The team and the NFL continued their investigation into allegations by Martin’s representatives that he was bullied. The NFL Players Association also planned to look into the matter. The 319-pound Incognito, a ninth-year pro, is white. The 312pound Martin, who is in his second NFL season, is black. It’s unclear whether Dolphins coaches and management had any inkling of harassment between

Anne Mahlum cannot stay still. It doesn’t matter whether she’s midmarathon or in her Adams Morgan apartment — she bounds ahead like a finish line is steps away. Even the 32-year-old’s spiky blond hair seems to fly in every possible direction. This frenetic energy has helped Mahlum run more than just races. One morning in 2007, she jogged past a Philadelphia homeless shelter and some guys outside waved to her. Mahlum, who began running as a teen to cope with her dad’s gambling addiction, realized they reminded her of him. And it gave her the idea of launching a run club there. The shelter director “tried to think of the nicest way to tell me that homeless guys don’t run,” she says. Six years later, the nonprofit organization she founded, called Back on My Feet, operates run clubs at nearly 60 shelters in 11 cities, including D.C. and Baltimore. So Mahlum’s announcement in July that she would be stepping down as chief executive was surprising. And her news release in August saying she’d be opening a boutique fitness studio in Washington was a downright head-scratcher. But it all makes sense to Mahlum, who recognized about 18 months ago that she was growing restless and needed a new project. She found it in January at a studio in Los Angeles that specializes in the Lagree Fitness Method, which is taught at more than 100 locations nationwide. Developed by celebrity trainer Sebastien Lagree — who souped up a Pilates reformer

to create what he’s dubbed the Megaformer — the method pairs slow, controlled movements and rapid-fire transitions to devastate muscles. “I walked into this class and I thought, ‘I can run 10 miles without any effort. I’ll be fine,’ ” Mahlum says. This time, she admits, she was wrong. With her abs on fire and her legs shaking, she inquired about opening the first Megaformer studio in D.C. Over the summer, she and her boyfriend, Brennan McReynolds, moved here from New York. And on Saturday, Solidcore opened for business. Because Lagree sells licenses rather than franchises, owners choose their own names and craft their own culture. Mahlum’s plan is to borrow from her Back on My
Getting a Solid Introduction At a Solidcore preview class, 10 guinea pigs huddled around owner Anne Mahlum as she introduced the Megaformer: It has stable platforms on each end, a sliding carriage in the middle and springs that alter resistance. Bars shaped like horns shoot up from the sides, and resistance bands lurk below. “We’ll never do anything for more than two minutes,” Mahlum said as the students launched into an abs-targeted warm-up. By the third move (which involved lying back and lifting and lowering the legs), faces were gleaming with sweat. “I know it’s already tough. It’s supposed to be,” Mahlum said. Despite an upbeat playlist,
students have to keep the brakes on rather than rush through their squats and tricep dips. “Going fast in this class is not going to help you,” Mahlum reminded folks lunging back too quickly. After some grimaces, a few grunts and a flurry of exercises (including the brutal plank-to-pike), 50 minutes was up. And everyone looked ready to lie down. V.H.

I was obsessed with looking perfect, being perfect,” Mahlum says. “When Back on My Feet started, I cared enough about other people that it went away. I had a bigger calling.” Her instruction style is pure pep talk, with her congratulating people for pushing themselves and surviving. (And because this kind of exercise takes a toll, she encourages breaks: “If someone was coming more than four days a week, we’d tell them to stop.”) Jaime Albarelli, 23, a member services manager for Back on My Feet, sized up the vibe at a preview class last month. “This is a supportive environment, but it’s still no-nonsense. If He Dumps You, Let Him Go My ex-boyfriend is accusing me of “stalking” him because I continue to text and ask him to reconsider our breakup. We were together three years, and he dumped me suddenly. I’m still struggling to understand. I think I am entitled to an explanation and want to hash things out. The less he responds, the more I feel I need to get through to him that this is all I want. FEELING DESPER ATE Just because you might be entitled to an explanation does not mean that he is capable of giving you one. And even if he were, it might not ever make sense, as his reasons would probably never be deemed good enough, thus running the risk of making you feel even more confused and hurt. You can’t picture it now — that’s the nature of the breakup beast —
but closure will come on your own time, with perspective, the comfort and distraction of friends, interests, passions or just an occasional good bowl of pho. If you’re willing to write for my advice, hopefully you’ll be willing to heed it: No long-term good is likely to come from you continuing to contact him, despite how strong the urges are in the short term.
There could be many things going on here. Maybe you notice it more with your brother, or she feels a comfort with him that she doesn’t with other people, or — less pleasant — she feels something for him that brings out the flirtation in her. The important thing is that you’re honest with yourself about how much it bothers you, and if it’s significant, talk to her about it. Here’s the rub: You’re not complaining or accusing; you’re sharing something that’s been on your mind. And in terms of her behavior, I’d urge you not to overanalyze (did I actually just write that?) because, depending on how she is with other male family members, it could be that what you interpret as flirtation is actually more of familial comfort and affection.

The Huffington Post has rooms for naps, yoga and meditation Elise Foley was sick of staring at her computer screen last Wednesday. So the Huffington Post reporter walked down the hallway of her downtown D.C. office in search of a cure. She found it in the meditation room, a dimly lit space that beckons visitors to sink into a plush couch or take a seat on the floor in front of a collection of candles. In that environment, it didn’t take long for Foley to reach enlightenment — at least about expecta-
tions at The Huffington Post. “It’s a nice reminder that if I step away from my desk for 20 minutes, people won’t freak out,” she says. Taking mental health breaks is the sort of behavior editor-in-chief Arianna Huffington has been touting through her “Third Metric” initiative, which emphasizes the role that wellness plays in a person’s success. In addition to hosting a Third Metric conference this summer and devoting a section of the news website to the subject (a recent article by Huffington covered the importance of getting enough shuteye), she’s also putting these principles into practice for her employees.

Huffington Post’s New York office has rooms for meditation, naps and yoga. And after spending a few years in a space that Washington bureau chief Ryan Grim describes as “sterile and corporate,” the D.C. staff moved into new digs nearby with the same amenities in
August. There are other perks, too — plump ottomans invite folks to kick their feet up, and the kitchen is stocked with wholesome snacks. “Newsrooms send signals to people about what’s expected,” Grim says. A message this one’s broadcasting? “We want you to have a life.”
It’s been a process for workers to acclimate to the new options. “They haven’t dragged me into the yoga room yet. My yoga is bourbon on the rocks,” jokes editorial director Howard Fineman, who refers to the meditation room as “the thing with all the pillows.” But staffers are exploring how to take advantage of the office. Politics managing editor Amanda Terkel visits the yoga room to stretch after running, and she’s eager to take the regular classes that are starting in the space this week — an instructor will lead both an athletic practice and a more restorative one. Reporter Sam Stein, who’s often up before 5 a.m. for television appearances, is the first nap-room regular. When he’s dragging, he moseys off for a 15-minute snooze. Bethesda’s Honest Tea has a new way to help its employees unwind: a competition. The “Go for the Gold(man)” Contest — named for CEO Seth Goldman — awards prizes in such categories as exploring vegetarian cuisine and spending time with family. The company also hosts yoga classes, sets aside a meditation break during major meetings and employs a wellness coach. “For different people, wellness is different things,” says Debra Schwartz, vice president of human resources. Wellness could even be beer, notes Noah Brodsky, chief experience officer for WeWork, a national network of office spaces that’s expanding into D.C. in 2014 with locations in Shaw and Chinatown. There’s a keg at every WeWork because socializing “is the way a lot of millennials want to relax,” he says. Amenities vary by location, but for individuals who derive energy from a crowd, WeWork puts in features like the game room in its SoHo office, above. People in need of a quiet moment at the Chinatown office will be able to visit WeWork’s first relaxation lounge. Her last full-length was back in 2005, and the longawaited “Hard Core 2K13” was supposed to drop on Halloween. Instead, we got a dancehall track, “Dead Gal Walking.” By Shauna We also got Miley Miller Cyrus dressed up like Kim from back in the day. This double shot depressed me. Is Lil’ Kim a Halloween costume now? Like Cher, an indisputable but distant legend? This past weekend, Kim also unexpectedly released the video for her next single, “Looks Like Money.” To my joy, she actually raps. She opens with a dis to Nicki Minaj (whom she’s hated since she rolled up on the scene in a pink wig) and Minaj’s label: “Cash Money’s so last year/ Gotta pay me in gold.” She totters in front of a Rolls and a Bentley covered in stacks of money, drinking rosé. She makes a Monica Lewinsky joke. She’s got money, smells like money. Et cetera. It’s a very convincing throwback to her heyday. I’m just not sure whether it’s intentional. Sony’s ‘Knack’ game challenges players to gather parts for an ever-changing beast

The hero of the game, which is also called “Knack,” is made up of 5,000 parts that cluster together and hang in the air to shape its ever-changing form. Each part — a metallic gold cube here, a rolling eyeball there, brown triangular fur everywhere — moves distinctly, rattling on roads, bursting into fiery explosions and morphing textures and colors. “Knack” was designed by the special game studio of Tokyobased Sony Corp., the electronics and entertainment company that also makes Bravia TVs and “Spider-Man” movies. Usually, video games start out with a story idea. Designers then come up with the characters to fit the scenario. “Knack” started with the main character. The storyline, which centers on the journey of a young boy and a scientist intent on saving the world from an invasion of evil goblins, came later. Knack is their assistant. The developers brain-stormed for more than a year on the best
