It’s no secret: Museum’s growing pains showing THE DISTRICT Milton Maltz remembers in July 2002 when Chinatown was considered a surprising choice for the International Spy Museum he was starting. It was a seemingly insignificant upstart in a city with a world-renowned network of federally funded museums. But just as the rest of the neighborhood in the past 12 years has morphed into a bustling highrent area, the museum gradually
outgrew its space. The addition of a new exhibit of James Bond lore in 2012 increased the museum’s inventory by 20 percent, and the collection continues to grow. “If there is one negative from the people that visit here, depending on the time of year or of day, it’s that it is too crowded,” said Maltz, 84. Today, the International Spy Museum is at a crossroad, seeking to change its location and
shifting from for-profit operation to nonprofit status. The museum’s three floors of public space are too small to fit the whole of its expanding collection. The low-ceiling rooms appear packed with visitors, even during off-hours. Its newest exhibits are spilling out into the lobby, where they snake around the ticketing line. Last year, the number of visitors exceeded 650,000. Museum executives decided in

That would allow the museum to create an endowment and rely on charitable contributions to supplement its revenue, diversifying the mix of ticket sales, gift-shop revenues and event rents that currently sustain it.

BETHESDA The people from the Smithsonian walked past the full-size cutouts of school policemen. They carried a big bag of bubble wrap and a list of things they wanted. If they could find them. Richard Lodish’s Bethesda living room was jammed with artifacts related to the history of education. So was his basement, and his dining room and his garage. “Take everything!” Lodish joked that his wife might say. “And take my husband!” Although they can’t take everything, experts from the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History have been sifting through Lodish’s astounding collection of school memorabilia for the best things. “It’s a very big deal,” said
Debbie Schaefer-Jacobs, an associate curator. The collection is so broad that it’s being distributed among several museum divisions. The retired head of D.C.’s Sidwell Friends Lower School, Lodish, 68, has been collecting for decades: desks, bells, spellers, readers, primers, report cards, samplers, merit cards, police cutouts and outhouse seats. (The museum will take the cutouts, but not the outhouse seats.) Most of his items date from the 1800s and early 1900s. The museum said it plans to take about 800 of them. “It’s like having a baby that grows up,” Lodish said of his treasures. “Now they’re on their own. I love this stuff. Police: Md. teen arrested for possessing gun, bombs
D.C. man found strangled in Dominican Republic
A teenager in Baltimore County was arrested Saturday for possession of a handgun and homemade explosives, which he said he planned to use to kill people at his high school, authorities said. The weapons were found at the teen’s home when police were interviewing him about a series of thefts from automobiles, police said. They said he did not bring them to school. He is a 10th-grade student at George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology in Towson, Md., according to police. Police did not identify the teen since he has been charged as a juvenile.
A D.C.-based criminal defense attorney who friends recalled as a “humble, generous” man has been found bound, gagged and strangled to death in his apartment in the Dominican Republic, police said over the weekend. Police identified him as Van Teasley, 55, who friends say split time between his vacation home in Santo Domingo and Capitol Hill. Officials said police were alerted by a friend of the victim, who was concerned that Teasley was not answering his doorbell or responding to phone calls. The door to the victim’s apartment was unlocked when police arrived to investigate, authorities said. (TWP/AP)

The newest tool for biologists is the baby penguin robotic spy. It’s pretty darn cute, and so convincing that penguins essentially talk to it, as if it is a potential mate for their chicks. Emperor penguins are notoriously shy. When researchers approach, these penguins normally back away and their heart rate goes up. So international scientists and filmmakers created a remote-control rover disguised as a chick to snuggle up to shy penguins in Adelie Land, Antarctic. The body of an Indian waiter who was the last missing victim of the Costa Concordia cruise liner was found by crews dismantling the vessel, authorities said Monday. The body was discovered in a cabin on the eighth deck and contained an identification card for Russel Rebello, authorities said. The Concordia capsized after hitting rocks near a Tuscan island in 2012, killing 32 people. In a Facebook message, Rebello’s brother confirmed the discovery of the body, which he said will undergo DNA testing before being put to rest, and thanked “all those who prayed and believed that one day he would be found.” (AP)
A Russian monument to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was taken down after Apple CEO Tim Cook’s announcement last week that he is gay. The monument, which is in the shape of an oversize iPhone, was located on a university campus in St. Petersburg until its removal Friday. It was put there in 2013 under the initiative of the holding company ZEFS, which cited Cook’s revelations about his sexuality last Thursday as the reason the company decided to remove the statue. Today, voters in three states and D.C. will decide how the next chapter of marijuana reform will be written, either building a growing public consensus on legalization or sending proponents to reassess their strategies. NATIONAL SECURITY The top admiral and top enlisted man in the U.S. Navy’s SEAL force are warning its members not to disclose classified information for publicity or cash, as two SEAL veterans who participated in the raid that killed al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden remain under scrutiny for allegedly doing so. The SEAL leaders said in a letter to all SEALs published Friday that a critical part of the SEAL ethos is, “I do not advertise the nature of my work, nor seek recognition for my actions.” It is a
lifelong commitment, both during and after military service, wrote Rear Adm. Brian L. Losey, commander of Naval Special Warfare Command, and Force Master Chief Michael L. Magaraci. “We do not abide willful or selfish disregard for our core values in return for public notoriety and financial gain,” Losey and Magaraci wrote in the letter, which Naval Special Warfare Command confirmed as legitimate. The SEAL leaders added that they will “actively seek judicial consequence” for any SEAL who discloses classified information.
The letter was published as Matt Bissonnette, a SEAL in the bin Laden raid, prepares to release a new book about his career, “No Hero: The Evolution of a Navy SEAL.” Leaders also may be sending a preemptive warning to another SEAL who has not identified himself but claimed in an article in Esquire magazine last year to have shot bin Laden first. Fox News announced recently that it will air a show in which a SEAL who claims to have killed bin Laden will share his story and identity.

Obama’s turn to change Republican control of the House and Senate seems tantalizingly close, so leading Republicans are turning to a matter often overlooked in campaigns: how to actually govern. CHARLES BABINGTON (AP)
What’s at stake Pundits say it will be crucial for the GOP to show they can legislate, lead and solve problems after years of lobbing political grenades at President Barack Obama and Senate Democrats. Republicans know their new majority (if it occurs) might last only two years. The 2016 Senate election map is far more favorable to Democrats.
What they’ll do If they gain Senate control, Republicans say they will pass some bills that Obama is sure to veto to highlight their ideological differences with Democrats. But they also will push for policies that both parties might accept, such as lowering the corporate tax rate, enhancing the president’s ability to make trade agreements and approving the Keystone XL pipeline.
What they won’t do In interviews with GOP senators, there was virtually no talk of balancing the budget, repealing Obama’s health-care law or achieving similar GOP campaign pledges that prove politically impossible in Washington.
POLITICS When President Barack Obama wakes up Wednesday morning, he may face a new world in which Republicans control not only the House of Representatives but also the U.S. Senate. If that happens, it would mark the first time in Obama’s six-year presidency. And it should change his job significantly. Senate confirmations, already a battleground, will get even tougher. Obama will have to pick up his veto pen more often, something he’s done just twice since taking office. And without a Democratic majority in either house of Congress, it will be even harder to take substantive action before attention turns to the 2016 presidential election. This means that if Obama wants his last two years to have any real success — and if a GOPled Congress is indeed the result of the midterms — the president will need to lead differently. Americans already want to see that: Some two-thirds of registered voters in a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll released Monday said Obama should initiate change to his leadership style. To lead with an oppositioncontrolled Congress, Obama will have to widen his circle of influencers, selectively find more ways to negotiate and better seize what his former adviser David Axelrod called the “theatrical nature of the presidency.” There are signs that today’s grim forecast for Democrats has begun to sink in, and that the White House is making plans in response. Some reports say the

Voters will choose all 435 members of the House (plus D.C.’s one nonvoting delegate), and 33 senators. Elections for governor will be held in 36 states, including close races in Maryland and Florida, and a mayoral election in the District.
Democrats have controlled the Senate since 2007, but three major election models are giving the GOP a 7 in 10 chance of netting the six seats it needs to reclaim the Senate. The four big toss-ups: Alaska, Georgia, Iowa and Kansas.

Russia endorses, U.S. condemns Sunday’s rebel-organized elections in eastern Ukraine
president will use his executive authority on priorities such as climate change, gay rights and immigration, noting there could be an overhaul announcement soon after the midterms. Other reports indicate a “big counterattack” on issues that are popular with the Democratic base but will be hard for the GOP to oppose. But if he has fewer allies in Congress, Obama’s approach to leadership could be just as important as his policy choices. The president will need to find ways to engage his opponents more, choosing issues where he stands a chance to come out ahead and identifying GOP lawmakers who have a reason to bargain. He’ll need to seize the advantages the presidency gives him by using the role to effectively manage crises — a challenge he has repeatedly fumbled on such issues as Ebola and Syria — and by taking advantage of moments that show the symbolism and the power of the presidency. He did this well after the killing of Osama bin Laden but has squandered them at other times. When handled well, these are the moments when the president appears the way people like to think of their chief executive — decisive, authoritative and emotionally connected with the country. Donors Can Give Poor Mothers in Haiti the Gifts of Hope and Life For more than 30 years, Food For The Poor has fed the hungry and sheltered the homeless provided hope for countless poor families in Latin America and the Caribbean. Through compassionate donors giving to programs such as the Combined Federal Campaign, new life is given to impoverished mothers like Junick in Haiti. Junick and her two children lived in a house so fragile and dangerous, it threatened to topple down upon them during violent rainstorms. The flimsy house sat on a foundation made of sand. Often Junick and her children would ask to sleep inside the local church because they were too scared to sleep in their own home. In her darkest hour, Junick cried out to God to end her family’s suffering. “I said, ‘God, I can’t live like this. Can you take me and the kids? I can’t live like that.’” Generous donors built Junick and her children a new Food For The Poor house. Now, she is helping others as they have helped her. “Yesterday there was a lot of rain … and yesterday, I sheltered a lot of people in my house,” Junick said. “These are people who used to shelter me, but now that I have a house, I shelter them.”

Doctors Without Borders Helps Deliver Babies in Desperate Situations Dr. Deane Marchbein’s extensive experience in the field adds unique depth to her work as president of the U.S. Board of Directors of Doctors Without Borders, a Global Impact charity partner. Since 2006, Dr. Marchbein has gone on 11 assignments, everywhere from Ivory Coast and South Sudan to Syria, Libya, and Lebanon. Here she reports from her most recent assignment in Khost emergency maternity hospital, Afghanistan: “The hospital is bustling. Spartan, but squeaky clean. Inside, I find the all-female staff hard at work with eight women delivering babies all at once. It’s not an unusual sight. “The first day I arrived, I was sitting outside having lunch with the team when bombs started exploding in the distance outside our hospital walls. But the real shock came a moment later, when I realized no one else had even put down their forks. They knew that the best security is vigilance and community acceptance — and this community truly wants us here.
“All told, we have just over 80 beds here, which allow the team to deliver more than 1,000 babies each month. It’s quite the challenge, but when you serve a community where people live in big extended families, it doesn’t take long before someone in your family or someone you know has been to our hospital to deliver a baby. And that deep connection with the community is what keeps us safe. “Despite widespread suffering throughout this country, Doctors Without Borders is making a profound difference in the lives of the people we treat every day — from the home-birth mothers we saved from bleeding to death, to the babies that never would have been born without a cesarean section that only our doctors can provide. There are so many people in urgent need of medical care in Afghanistan. Our work may not be single-handedly changing the area’s dismal health care statistics. But, every day, we touch people’s lives and we

are proving that, even in these desperate circumstances, it is possible to deliver the medical care people need.”

Back on the job: RGIII shows some flashes of old self It wasn’t a hero’s return or a triumphant finish, but Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III showed Sunday why he has to be the 2015 starter. The Redskins’ 29-26 loss to the Vikings wasn’t even the hardest part of Griffin’s day. Sitting in the front seat of a bus that crashed en route to the stadium — and worrying about being hurtled through the windshield — made opposing pass rushers seem minor. As to erroneous pregame reports of a divided locker room, Griffin learned to ignore haters long ago. This is Griffin’s team and any delusional preference for Colt McCoy or anyone else
next year ended with Griffin playing a solid, though stained, game Sunday. The passer made two major mistakes: The interception shortly before halftime awakened the Vikings and led to Minnesota’s first score. And the Hail Mary at the end of regulation didn’t even stay in bounds — costing the Redskins any final chance. They were killer mistakes for sure. But Griffin made some marvelous plays, too. The kind that resembled 2012, when the rookie could do no wrong. He slipped a sack to find Roy Helu for a 24-yard gain. Griffin found DeSean Jackson deep for a 45-yarder and later for a 13-yard score. Jackson also caught a 56-yarder in the fourth quarter that led to a
touchdown and a 26-21 lead. Griffin completed 18 of 28 passes for 251 yards with one interception, one touchdown and a 90.0 passer rating. After missing six weeks with a dislocated ankle, he showed he’s capable of playing well in coach Jay Gruden’s system. Sunday’s loss dropped the Redskins to 3-6, ending any playoff hopes (notwithstanding a miracle 7-0 finish like they had in 2012), so the last seven weeks of the season are about jobs for 2015. While Washington will probably change safeties and offensive linemen next season, the current focus is on Griffin. Can he stay healthy for a half season? Is he still a leader in the huddle? Does he still have that elusiveness? Can he execute Gruden’s game plan?

By season’s end, the Redskins will definitely know whether they need a new quarterback for 2015. But the team can’t afford another passer, given the persistent personnel problems elsewhere. Next year’s first-round draft pick needs to be used on a safety or offensive lineman, or else this team will never improve. Having to teach the system to another quarterback would mean the Redskins are back in rebuilding mode. It takes a couple years for any passer to feel comfortable in a scheme. Griffin and Gruden seem to have met halfway to feature the passer’s strengths. Why start over with someone else? The Redskins have a history of changing quarterbacks — more than 20 different passers have started since the last Super Bowl championship 23 years ago. For now, staying with Griffin gives the Redskins their best chance of one day returning to the postseason.
3 AFC East This is the hottest division, with the exception of the Jets (1-8). The Patriots (7-2), Bills (5-3) and Dolphins (5-3) are each riding a multiplegame winning streak.
2 NFC West The Seahawks (5-3) and 49ers (4-4) are the last two NFC Super Bowl representatives, while the Cardinals (7-1) have the best record in the league.
1 AFC North All four teams are above .500, with Joe Flacco and the Ravens (5-4) somehow in last place despite having the second-best point differential in the NFL.

Washington’s 6-5 loss to Arizona, its fourth straight defeat and fifth in six games, was the latest in a dismaying trend of setbacks. A host of familiar problems have re-emerged, leaving the Capitals (4-5-2) frustrated. “Guys are going to make mistakes. You just need other guys to pick them up,” defenseman Brooks Orpik said. “Right now,
one guy makes a mistake and everyone else watches it happen. We need guys to support each other a little bit better.” The Capitals held a secondperiod lead in all five losses, but have zero standings points to show for any of them. Opponents have feasted on sloppy defensivezone coverage, featuring too many turnovers to count. The goaltenders, though not entirely at fault, have failed to make big saves to bail out their teammates. Washington’s save percentage in the past six games is .858, the worst in the NHL over that span as of Monday. In coaching nearly 1,200 games prior to this season, Barry Trotz learned that adversity

He has preached patience to his players, but even his has worn thin. “Sometimes I get the feeling we want to play [only] as hard as we need to,” Trotz said Sunday. “That’s not how I operate. That’s not how you win in this league.” Tonight the Capitals face the Flames, the only team Washington has defeated in the past two weeks. It’s the next opportunity to begin righting what has gone wrong. “We need to work harder,” forward Troy Brouwer said. “We need to work smarter. We’re a good team in here, but we have to prove it. We have to show it.”

The Nationals opened 2014 with Anthony Rendon manning second base, but he moved to third base after injuries to Ryan Zimmerman, and he will likely stay there as the Nationals bid farewell to Adam LaRoche and move Zimmerman across the diamond. They traded for Asdrubal Cabrera at the deadline rather than hand the position to Danny Espinosa, and Cabrera is a free agent this winter.
“We need to see where we’re at, what we want our payroll to be, who’s a movable item, who’s acquirable, what type of options are out there,” general manager Mike Rizzo said. The easiest way to fill the position would be free agency. The safest bet would be Cabrera, whom the Nationals know and like from their stretch run. “He had a great half a season for us,” Rizzo said. “He was a great teammate. He’s a professional player. He plays good defense. He’s a guy we had a great feel for. We know that specific player very well.” Oakland’s Jed Lowrie may be the best free agent fit for the Nationals. Like Cabrera, he would provide a switch hitter in a lineup that needs a left-handed presence

Climbing out on a limb Fuse Ladder introduces students to a new apparatus and some forgotten muscles CLASS REVIEW At the just-opened second location of Fuse Pilates, get ready to climb. The 14th Street studio is up a flight of stairs, and devotes a room to its newest class: Ladder. WHAT IT IS: Founder Mariska Breland never imagined she’d build “anything other than Legos.” But the buzz about barre workouts had her sketching schematics in search of a new twist to offer. For a tough standing routine, Breland wanted to incorporate spring weights for strength training. And she wanted students to be able to grab the apparatus at several heights — and dangle from it, too. “That’s a ladder,” explains Breland, who tapped a local contractor to turn her vision into a solid-maple reality. Senior instructor Addie Ungaretti installed a prototype in
her garage this summer, and collaborated with Breland to develop a repertoire of exercises. “My neighbors could overhear me working out and probably thought I was crazy,” Ungaretti says. The results, however, were crazy effective, Breland adds. The upright design allowed them to toy with balance challenges and hanging moves not possible on other Pilates equipment. So they had a dozen more ladders made for the new studio. MOVES: At Fuse, instructors begin all 55-minute classes by asking which three body parts students want to target. Ladder is no different, but legs and forearms always get extra attention thanks to the warm-up — a heart-pumping, 15-minute climbing series, followed by climb-and-leg-lift combos. why the studio has pot holder-like pieces of rubber to help hands stick to the rungs. Then it’s time to attach springs to the sides of the ladder on a series of numbered hooks. (Higher — in height and number — means harder.) They add resistance to up the difficulty of squats, bicep curls, abdominal roll-downs and more. WORKOUT: “I was sore for days after my first class,” says Jen Yeh, 32, who’s worked out at Fuse for four years but isn’t used to so much climbing and dangling. As
Colleen Sanders, 31, walked out of Ladder last week, she noted, “My legs are still shaking.” The culprit? Lunges on her tiptoes with one leg on the floor and the other on the ladder. “You know it’s a challenging class when pushups are the easiest part,” she added. (Breland told her that future pushups with feet elevated on the ladder won’t feel so easy.) WATCH OUT: The springs are modifiable, and students can choose to use a different rung if they’re hurting. But those with severe shoulder injuries may want to stay away — or, at least, not try to hang from the top and tuck their legs into their stomach. (At a recent class, most students were too clumsy to pull that off anyway.) Also, grippy socks might help those with sensitive feet. HOLLEY
Residents of certain D.C. neighborhoods have so many fitness options that picking just one for a monthly membership leaves them feeling powerless. “They’re wondering, ‘Do I want to pay X for this gym, or X for that studio?’ Because if they’re doing both, they’re overpaying,” says Hameto Benkreira, founder of Drop In (local.trydropin.com), a startup that hawks workout class passes. He’s cooked up a new idea, DistrictPass, that launches later this month. The concept is folks pay one price (starting at about $100) to have monthly access to two fitness facilities in the same neighborhood — maybe a yoga studio and a traditional gym, or a CrossFit box and a cycling studio. The first partners will be announced soon, and Benkreira welcomes suggestions for more options. (EXPRESS)

I’m not sure how united in irritation your group of friends is, but it seems clear that her “hosting” (air quotes were born for this!) role needs to be rescinded. Is this just a peculiar trait of her at home, or is she something of an imposer in general? You can have a larger
discussion about it if you are feeling particularly put-upon or if it’s part of a more problematic pattern. But if it’s a quirk of outings at her house that you don’t feel the need to discuss, then just request a change of venue. Suggest someone else’s place (“I’ve been dying to show off my new lamp!”) or a restaurant — and don’t take no for an answer.
I don’t think that being a supportive friend and showing your disapproval of her path are mutually exclusive. In fact, to me, they’re almost one and the same. Like when someone takes a liking to chewing glass shards, no one should pretend this path will end up sprouting geraniums and rainbows. She’s reliving her past pain through the opposite role, maybe in some misguided effort to gain control over it. But it’s only going to leave her with more hurt. “I know this might come off like I’m judging you, but I’m worried about you. I can’t imagine this ending well, and I wonder why you’re doing this to yourself. Halle Berry is attempting to dramatically decrease her child support payments to her daughter’s father, Gabriel Aubry, from $16,000 to $3,800 a month. According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, Berry claims Aubry uses his payments for personal expenses, including gym memberships, clothing, health insurance and miscellaneous electronics. Aubry, a model, now claims that he has been unable to find work since Berry’s husband, Olivier Martinez, attacked him in her driveway in 2012, injuring Aubry’s face. (EXPRESS)
