India’s biggest auto manufacturing plant had to close for 36 hours last week after a wild leopard wandered onto the premises in Manesar, UPI reported. Some 100 forest officers and police searched for the big cat on the 600-acre campus of Maruti Suzuki. The leopard avoided capture while steering clear of traps baited with live goats and raw meat. After a day and a half, officers finally were able to tranquilize it Friday. (EXPRESS)

Vance,’ ” Hardy remembered. The two talked motorcycles until the light turned green. Vance’s Harleys will be available for inspection Saturday and Monday at Weschler’s. Man attacked at march faces charge CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. A black man brutally beaten at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., is now facing a felony charge related to the August attack. A local magistrate Monday issued an arrest warrant for DeAndre Harris on an unlawful wounding charge after an accuser, whom police did not identify, claimed to have been injured by the 20-year-old during the brawl, authorities said. S. Lee Merritt, a civil attorney for Harris, told The Washington Post the charge was “clearly retaliatory” and described the accuser as a member of a white supremacist group. Merritt maintained that Harris

police, and suggested that the accuser had previously tried to implicate Harris in the violence without success. Merritt said his client would turn himself in to police in the coming days. In a statement provided to WVIR, the Charlottesville Police Department said the alleged
victim went to the magistrate’s office in person to explain what happened. After discussing the accuser’s story with a detective, the magistrate issued the warrant. Harris was marching in opposition to the rally Aug. 12 when a scuffle broke out between a group of white supremacists and several counter-protesters at a downtown parking garage. Harris was seen bloodied in viral photos and a video after being attacked during the rally. Merritt said that Harris was left with a concussion, abrasions and contusions across his body, as well as a head laceration that required staples, a knee injury and a fractured wrist. Two brothers plead guilty in police station shooting Two brothers have pleaded guilty for their roles in an attack on a Prince George’s County police station last year that claimed the life of a police detective. Malik Ford pleaded guilty to attempted murder, conspiracy and a gun charge, and Elijah Ford pleaded guilty to a single conspiracy charge. A third brother, Michael Ford, who had a gun and fired at the station, faces second-degree murder, attempted murder and conspiracy charges. Chesapeake dead zones are biggest since 2014 Researchers say the total amount of oxygen-deprived dead zones in the Chesapeake Bay this summer was the biggest since 2014. The Virginia Institute of Marine Science has used a 3-D forecast model since 2014 to gauge areas of oxygen depletion in which oxygen dissolved in water falls so low it no longer supports fish, crabs, oysters and other aquatic life. Man aiding injured dog dies after vehicle hits him Authorities in western Maryland said a pedestrian has died after being struck by a vehicle while tending to an injured dog. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday that Clifford Lee Staley, 49, was walking along a road in Hagerstown on Saturday evening with two dogs. When one of the dogs darted into the road and a minivan struck it, Staley ran into the roadway to try to save it. But just as he crouched next to the dog, Staley was struck by another vehicle. local TRANSPORTATION For the first time in years, more commuters in the region ride Metro four days a week than do five — a subtle but significant ridership shift that transit officials fear may have long-term implications for the transit agency. According to new data released Tuesday by Metro’s Office of Planning, there has been a steady decline since 2013 in the average number of monthly trips taken by commuters carrying SmarTrip cards — down from 20 trips per month to 18. And data analysts contend only
about 30 percent of Metro’s recent ridership losses are due to people abandoning the system because of reliability and on-time performance problems. Instead, the rise of teleworking may have a more significant impact on ridership, confirming theories raised by transit officials in recent months: Rail ridership during morning peakperiod hours on Fridays — a typical teleworking day for the federal government — is usually 15 to 20 percent lower than on days in the middle of the week. Not a good time: Internal turmoil hits labor union

for $32 billion in cuts that probably would target feds, potentially including a series of retirement hits Trump previously proposed. Meanwhile, there are continuing efforts by congressional Republicans to undermine civil service due process rights, allowing agencies to fire feds faster. It seems AFGE has enough to do without eating its own. The ouster of Local 12’s leadership comes less than two months after the union’s National Executive Council ejected another duly elected official and a Cox political opponent. Eugene Hudson Jr. was booted from the national secretary-treasurer post in August for what union officials considered improper procedure in using a staffer to send a politically sensitive email to union members. Hudson later announced his candidacy for Cox’s job. Like Hudson’s removal, the latest action comes as Alex Bastani, the sacked local president who ran against Cox in 2012, was contemplating another run for national office. Even if the motives behind the ousters were pure, the circumstances breed intrigue. In a memo to Local 12 members, Cox said he placed the unit in trusteeship, which can last up to 12 months, because “it is essential that proper financial controls and democratic principles be restored.” Local 12 officials, Cox wrote, “failed to abide by a vote of the local membership, conducted

During a time when government workers are facing increasing threats from President Trump and Congress, the largest federal labor union is again facing its own political turmoil. American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) President J. David Cox Sr. dismissed the elected officials of the union’s Labor Department unit last week over allegations of improper expenditures and failure to honor the votes of members. This upheaval is another internal dispute and distraction for AFGE while Trump and congressional Republicans are tightening the screws on federal employees through moves to weaken unions, including proposed or actual cuts to compensation and staffing and due process rights. Federal employee organizations need all their resources and more to defend against repeated assaults from the White House and Congress. Just days before Local 12’s leaders were jettisoned, Trump issued an executive order that weakens union influence by dismantling the labor-management forums where general workplace issues are discussed. The day after the firings, the House approved a spending plan that would sharply reduce government subsidies for the Federal Employees Health Benefits program. The House Budget Resolution also calls

in September 2016, regarding the establishment of an audit committee and the hiring of an outside vendor for conducting an audit.” The alleged improper expenditures involved an $18,000 Hyatt Regency luncheon in June for hundreds of union members and retirees. The event celebrated the local’s $7 million overtime dispute settlement with the Labor Department. Local 12 is one of
the larger AFGE locals in the Washington area. Leaders of the now-deposed unit believe the move by Cox did not follow proper procedures and was a political ploy to remove Bastani, whose plans to run for secretarytreasurer now would be more difficult as a fired local official. Q. I’m interested in “phased” retirement. How do I sign up? A. You can’t, unless your agency agrees to offer it to you. In phased retirement, employees eligible for retirement and with at least 20 years of service switch to halftime work for as long as a year. They receive a prorated salary plus half of the annuity they have accumulated to that point. When they later retire fully, they receive full annuities, including credit for the part-time work. The idea is to benefit employees who are ready to cut back but not yet ready to retire fully, while agencies gain from having them pass along institutional knowledge — they are to spend a fifth of their working time mentoring others. If you’re interested, try making a case for how the agency would benefit, as opposed to losing you to immediate full retirement. But don’t get your hopes too high, because the authority is relatively new and the process is complex — agencies haven’t used it much so far. Currently, there are only 276 phased retirees, about one in every 1,000 federal employees who are retirement-eligible, and just 21 agencies have any — NASA is the “heaviest” user, with 43. Police: Student killed officer LUBBOCK, TEXAS A Texas Tech University student confessed to killing a campus police officer who had been booking him on a drug possession charge, telling detectives he had done “something illogical” and that “he was the one that shot their friend,” an investigator said. In an affidavit released Tuesday, Detective Thomas Bonds of the Lubbock city police said Hollis Daniels III confessed to killing Officer Floyd East Jr. on Monday. Campus Police Chief Kyle Bonath said Tuesday that his department had received reports of a student acting erratically who might have a weapon. University officials said East went to Daniels’ room to perform a welfare check and found evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia. East arrested Daniels and took him to the campus police station. Despite Hurricane Destruction, There’s Hope
t the start of every hurricane season, city officials and news outlets give the same advice to vulnerable communities: get organized now in preparation for whatever Mother Nature may bring. These recommendations include buying supplies, stocking emergency kits and getting your home storm-ready. While the average U.S. citizen may not heed their suggestions until a hurricane is imminent, charitable disaster relief and humanitarian aid organizations are prepared well before a storm hits. The relief efforts of one such organization, Samaritan’s Purse, were already underway even before Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas this past August. “Our team is constantly monitoring the weather and stands ready to respond at a moment’s notice,” says Luther Harrison, vice president of North American Ministries at Samaritan’s Purse. “Because of this, we were able to preposition tractor-trailers stocked with tools and relief supplies in north Texas in anticipation of Hurricane Harvey. As soon as the storm cleared, those Disaster Relief Units moved into hard-hit communities, and Samaritan’s Purse teams were able to start helping families devastated by the disaster.” Staff and volunteers helping with relief through Samaritan’s Purse do a wide range of activities to aid recovery efforts. Some are handing out basic supplies like emergency shelter materials, water filters and hygiene kits, which include items like body soap, toothbrushes, toilet paper, laundry soap and other essentials. Other people are rolling up their sleeves
and helping to literally rebuild communities by clearing debris, removing damaged flooring and drywall, covering roofs with tarps, clearing felled trees and more. “One of the homeowners in Texas shared with us that they were in complete despair
adults volunteered a combined 134,500 hours through Samaritan’s Purse to help with hurricane relief in both Texas and Florida. The selflessness of volunteers only adds more fuel to Harrison and his colleagues’ desire to help those in need. “I draw strength from seeing

after Hurricane Harvey and did not know where to start or where to turn after their home was flooded,” Harrison says. “We were able to assist this homeowner by removing the damaged drywall, insulation and flooring, and spraying to prevent mold growth. We were able to get them to a place where their home could dry out and be ready to rebuild.” By early October, more than 8,340 men, women and young

In those smaller communities, the scene was “really dramatic,” according to Dr. Varughese. The floodwaters still had not fully receded as they had in Houston. Homes were damaged or destroyed. Even personal possessions were so badly damaged that they were no longer worth keeping. At home after home, Dr. Varughese witnessed front lawns strewn with everything from appliances

Like Samaritan’s Purse, Americares had a team prepositioned before the hurricane arrived so they could respond immediately and address urgent medical needs. “Our U.S. program provides free medicines and supplies to free and charitable clinics and other federally qualified health centers that are serving vulnerable communities that are uninsured or underinsured,” Dr. Varughese says. Americares’ Hurricane Harvey relief efforts have already provided more than $3 million worth of medicines, supplies and financial assistance. Medical assistance is critical after a natural disaster occurs, and not just for obvious external injuries. During hurricane preparation, people oftentimes neglect or overlook their potential medical needs. It’s easy to forget to pack prescription medication in the rush to evacuate or to just not bring a large-enough supply to last for the entirety of the evacuation. Another real possibility is that medicine becomes ruined by floodwaters or washed out of homes by the storm surge. A number of people lose access to medicine during and immediately after natural disasters. That’s why part of Americares’ relief efforts include supplying medication to area clinics. One of the organization’s partners, the San José Clinic, had received a shipment of insulin just in time to reopen on the Tuesday after Labor Day. Dr. Varughese was speaking with one of the pharmacists at the clinic and says “she was relieved because if they had not gotten that shipment of insulin – because a number of their distributors were not able to get it to them in time – then they would have had to turn people away who needed that critical medicine.” Another initiative that

u Sept. 8, 2017: After Hurricane Irma’s destructive path across the Caribbean, Samaritan’s Purse sends its DC-8 aircraft to St. Maarten, with 20 tons of supplies including hygiene items, blankets and rolls of heavy-duty plastic sheeting for emergency shelter. The cargo plane departed from Greensboro, N.C., with materials to help more than 2,000 families. Dr. Varughese was involved with in the Beaumont area was a tetanus vaccine outreach in conjunction with a local clinic partner. While they were administering the vaccine and distributing hygiene kits and first aid kits, Dr. Varughese was struck by recipients’ deep gratitude and the kindness of the community, despite the disaster they had just survived and the struggles they were still experiencing. She recalls the experience of a nurse who was administering the tetanus vaccine. He and his family had been impacted by Harvey and were still trying to recover. But that didn’t stop him from helping his community. “The night before, he was cleaning out his own home and trying to get through all of his belongings,” Dr. Varughese says. “Then the next day he’s there at the vaccine outreach with a smile on his face, greeting the community members, administering the vaccine. I was really struck by his resilience and his generosity as well, and his commitment to serving the community despite the fact that he himself had been impacted.” She encountered story after story of people trying to cope with their own devastation while still serving the needs of others.
The experience got her thinking about how natural disasters aren’t selective. They could destroy any community, which is why disaster relief is such an important cause. “I think that’s really what has been a motivation for us at Americares in terms of our response,” she says. “This could happen to anyone at any time, and there’s a lot of ongoing need that will be there for months if not years to come. There’s still a lot of work to be done beyond the acute response phase as well.” Hurricane Relief in the Caribbean In the Caribbean, idyllic islands that thrive off tourism have been left devastated by this season’s hurricanes. Like the response in Texas, charitable organizations have been dispatching teams to the affected islands to help with relief efforts. Americares is coordinating shipments of medicines and supplies throughout the islands that have been affected by Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria. Their relief efforts aren’t only reactive – they start sending aid prior to the time when hurricanes make landfall. One incredible example is
their success in airlifting $1.8 million in medicine and medical supplies to Saint Thomas before Hurricane Maria arrived. Dave Holzhauer is in Saint Martin leading the disaster response team for Samaritan’s Purse. This Caribbean island nation was devastated by Hurricane Irma. “Thousands of people in Saint Martin have lost everything they owned, including their house, belongings and livelihoods,” he says. “Everywhere we go, the needs are greater than what we can provide. Local authorities are reporting that 95% of the homes have been damaged by the hurricane and 60% are uninhabitable. Everyone needs assistance of some type.” Coordinating the logistical details for Saint Martin’s relief efforts are challenging since it’s an island nation. Unlike with Texas, all supplies must be brought in via air or sea. There

weren’t nearby safe zones where tractor-trailers could be stationed to await being dispatched. All of Saint Martin was affected in some way. Patience and making effective use of available supplies
are key to rebuilding these communities. The relief efforts through Samaritan’s Purse are wideranging. Teams on the ground have given food to more than 7,300 people and are supplying

CFC Supporter Story: Generations of Givers
T
he Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) is one of the largest workplace fundraising campaigns in the world, having raised $8.2 billion – and counting – for thousands of vetted charities that make a local, national and global impact. With a campaign of this size, there are many people who help raise awareness, manage the day-to-day operations and encourage generosity, in the form of monetary donations and volunteerism, to the CFC’s charities. Debra A. Gale is one of those people. As a CFC program manager for National Institutes of Health (NIH), she helps with all of those activities and more, in addition to being a management analyst at NIH. Being involved with charitable activities isn’t new for Gale – it’s in her blood. “My parents were my first example of ‘givers,’ and they taught me at a very young age to give to others and be kind to one another,” she says. “They also taught me that the greatest gift is charity (love). I’m always reminded of my parents’ teachings, and as an adult, it’s easy for me to give my time, my money or whatever is needed of me to help someone in need.” Gale’s main charitable cause is cancer research, in memory of her father. In this interview, she shares her story, her motivation and reasons for giving.

How did you first get involved with CFC? I was not familiar with the CFC until I started my first federal job at NIH in 2007. When I learned about the federal program and how easy it was to support a charity, I was eager to give. As my career progressed at NIH, I became more and more involved. Being in a leadership role, I felt it was my responsibility to ignite the teams and tell them my story, in an effort to pull on the heartstrings of folks by encouraging them to support something they care about. What is your why for supporting cancer research? I give because I care about heart and cancer causes. My mom died of a heart attack at the early age of 57 and my dad died of bone cancer at the age of 73. During my dad’s final days, I remember him saying to me, “Debi, I just have so much more to do and give.” His words have resonated with me since his passing, and I do what I can to give back. I love paying it forward. What keeps you motivated to continue to support this cause? The memories I shared with my parents keep me motivated. Giving is instilled in my heart. It’s easy for me to give to the CFC, because there are so many charities that focus on the causes I care about. I believe there is a cure for cancer and understand it takes money to
conduct research. Until cancer no longer exists, my specific charities can continue to rely upon my support. For those who want to see the impact of their contribution immediately, what’s a cause they can support? Some impacts are obvious to see, such as disaster relief. Just based upon the disasters that have affected so many people in Texas, Florida and around the world, you can visually see a need. Although donations from the current CFC won’t be disbursed until 2018, the victims from these horrific hurricanes will need continuous support throughout 2018 and beyond. Why should Federal employees participate in CFC in particular? Employees who donate to this campaign, whether it’s via payroll deduction, credit card or whatever method they decide, can be assured their donations are addressing an extended need. single individual can make a large impact, no matter the cause or the charity. In just five months since Jamie Newberry started her job as program manager at the United Breast Cancer Foundation (UBCF), she has already personally worked with 87 individuals and their families who have had their lives turned upside down by breast cancer. Even more encouraging, Newberry says “it has truly been one success story after the next.” Take Tina M., for example, who received an individual grant from UBCF. Tina’s mastectomy left her feeling beyond defeated. The way she described it to Newberry was that she felt how she looked – “totally annihilated.” To make matters worse, she was even homeless and living out of her car at the time when she applied for financial assistance from UBCF. “She had been trying to move from California to Maryland so she could be closer to her mother, and start over,” Newberry recalls. In just one month, UBCF’s grant helped Tina move across the country, transport her vehicle and pay for a new apartment in the area she wanted to live in. There was also Brenda T., whose story really stood out to Newberry. “She started by sharing that she had lost a child, she had a handicapped son and a husband that is disabled,” Newberry says. “As a woman who had breast cancer and a double mastectomy after her treatment was over, she longed to feel ‘whole again.’” Many women lose their selfconfidence after having a double mastectomy, and they find it difficult to gain it back.

It’s the nature of her job, though she doesn’t necessarily see it as work. “We live in a society that gets caught up in pursuing careers that are oftentimes title-driven or alluring because of a salary amount,” she says. “We need to condition ourselves to give back to those that are in need. I get more appreciation and self-worth from hearing my clients say things such as: ‘receiving this grant is like being told the cancer is gone’ and ‘all those that work for the United Breast Cancer Foundation are actually angels in disguise.’” Charity takes many forms, and there are other opportunities available for those who want to give back. Monetary donations of all amounts are vital – they’re what help make UBCF’s grant programs possible. Those who want to do even more and see their impact firsthand can also donate their time. “Volunteering time can have a tremendous effect on our organization and on our clients,” Newberry says. “We welcome anyone that is willing to help set up for an event, organize inventory and help to load and unload trucks for distributions.”

Unfortunately, the need for aid and charity won’t be going away in the near future. About 12% of women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. That’s a one-in-eight chance. The disease is more rare among men, with only 2,600 being diagnosed each year compared to 246,660 women. Still, both men and women die from breast cancer every year. But there is hope, and Newberry sees it firsthand in her work. There’s Tina, there’s Brenda and there are nearly 3 million other breast cancer survivors in the United States. With organizations like UBCF supporting men and women with grants and free or reducedcost services, there’s even more hope for early detection, affordable treatments and helping cancer patients and their families land on their feet after a hard-fought battle. VIRGINIA – As a military wife, Kalynn is accustomed to weathering storms and celebrating milestones while her husband is overseas with the U.S. Navy. Even so, nothing prepared her for the disastrous impact of Hurricane Matthew last fall. Her husband was deployed on an aircraft carrier when the historic storm hit, so she was alone with her two young children, ages 3 and 6, as floodwaters rose around them. Water seeped through cracks in her home’s foundation, soaking her carpet and wood flooring. After the hurricane, Kalynn worried about the mold and mildew that was sure to set off her child’s asthma and allergies. Her husband was too far away to help, and without flood insurance, Kalynn didn’t know where to begin. Though she could contact her
husband on his carrier to let him know about the situation, there was little help he could offer from afar. As she walked through their home, taking in the saturated floors, Kalynn broke down in tears. She felt alone, but the Norfolk Emergency Manager learned about her situation and knew how to assist. Soon, the near-empty house was filled with the footsteps and voices of Operation Blessing International (#10530) staff and volunteers ready to be of service to this military wife and her children. In the wake of Hurricane Matthew, Operation Blessing International was hard at work in North Carolina and Virginia to aid families hard-hit by flooding, high winds and unexpected heartache. Covenant House Washington Opens Its Doors For Youth
80 percent of homeless youth that enter Covenant House Washington’s Transitional Housing Program leave in stability. The Issue of Homeless Youth Each year more than 1,000 homeless, disconnected and exploited young people from DC, Virginia and Maryland, walk through the doors of Covenant House Washington (CHW). Each young person has their own unique set of obstacles that prevent them from obtaining stability. Some have stories we’ve unfortunately heard too often: “My parents kicked me out because they don’t support my change in identity” or “I aged out of foster care and have nowhere to go or anyone who loves me” or “When I turned 18 my parents said that it was time to go on my own.” Regardless of the reason, CHW opens its doors with welcoming arms and a loving heart. In a recent national study on sex trafficking, CHW found that 40 percent of all young people who enter its programs had been exposed to trafficking and 33 percent of those people were solicited during their very first night on the street. When asked why this happened, the majority of them said they had no other options
and lacked a caring adult in their life. CHW provides youth with care and attention, but most importantly with workforce readiness, career placement and postsecondary support so that youth won’t ever experience that state of vulnerability. A 20+ Year History Covenant House Washington serves as the region’s largest and leading non-profit in transforming the lives of homeless, disconnected and exploited youth. Since 1995, CHW has opened its doors to more than 50,000 homeless, disconnected or exploited youth in the Greater Washington, DC region. SANTA ROSA, CALIF. In neighborhood after neighborhood, all that remains are the smoldering ashes and eyestinging smoke from a day of utter devastation. Newly homeless residents of California wine country took stock of their shattered lives Tuesday, a day after wildfires killed at least 15 people and destroyed more than 2,000 homes and businesses. Hundreds more firefighters joined the battle against the blazes, which were still completely uncontained. Authorities also began to identify the dead, including a 100-yearold man and his 98-year-old wife, who died in their burning home. A thick, smoky haze cloaked much of Napa and Sonoma counties, where neighborhoods hit by the fires were completely leveled. In the Santa Rosa suburb known as Coffey Park, house after house was gone, with only brick chimneys still standing. The flames burned so hot that windows and tire rims melted off cars. Officials hoped cooler weather and lighter winds would help crews get a handle on 17 separate fires, which are among the deadliest in California history. “The weather has been working in our favor, but it doesn’t mean it will stay that way,” said Brad Alexander, a spokesman for the governor’s Office of Emergency Services. The extra firefighters came from throughout California and Nevada. Extra law enforcement officers will help with evacuations and guard against looting, Alexander said. At least 100 people have been injured and 100 were missing in Sonoma County alone, authorities said. The fires that started Sunday night moved so quickly that

Former San Francisco Giants pitcher Noah Lowry, who now runs an outdoor sporting goods store in Santa Rosa, was forced to flee with his wife, two daughters and a son just over 2 weeks old. “I can’t shake hearing people scream in terror as the flames barreled down on us,” Lowry said. New timeline raises questions for Vegas police LAS VEGAS The revised timeline for the Las Vegas massacre that investigators provided this week raises questions about whether better communication might have allowed police to respond more quickly and take out the gunman before he could kill and wound so many people. On Monday, Sheriff Joe Lombardo said Stephen Paddock shot and wounded a Mandalay Bay hotel security guard outside his door and sprayed 200 bullets down the hall six minutes before he opened fire Oct. 1 from his high-rise suite on a crowd at a country music festival below. That was a different account from the one police gave last week: that Paddock shot the guard, Jesus Campos, after unleashing his barrage of fire on the crowd, where 58 people were killed and hundreds injured. The sheriff had previously hailed Campos as a “hero” whose arrival in the hallway may have led Paddock to stop firing. How crucial were the minutes that elapsed before the massacre began? “This changes everything,” said Joseph Giacalone, a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a former New York City police sergeant. “There absolutely was an opportunity in that time frame that some of this could’ve been mitigated. “By engaging the shooter ahead of time during this event, it could’ve saved a lot of heartache.” MICHAEL BALSAMO (AP)

More women claim abuse by Weinstein HOLLYWOOD An avalanche of allegations poured out Tuesday against Harvey Weinstein in on-the-record reports that detailed claims of sexual abuse and included testimonies from Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie, further intensifying the collapse of the disgraced movie mogul. Three women accused Weinstein of raping them in a story published online by The New Yorker, including the Italian actress Asia Argento and a woman who was an aspiring actress in college when she caught Weinstein’s eye. Lucia Evans, then a senior at Middlebury College, said Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex on him in 2004 at the Miramax offices in Tribeca. She had been brought in for a casting meeting with Weinstein. Argento, an actress and director, said Weinstein forcibly performed oral sex on her at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997. A third woman spoke anonymously. In a follow-up to its earlier exposé, The New York Times also reported Tuesday that many
other actresses have in recent days added to the chorus of accusations surrounding Weinstein. Paltrow described Weinstein’s attempt to lure her, then 22, into giving him a massage in a hotel room. The incident prompted her then-boyfriend, Brad Pitt, to confront Weinstein at a premiere. Jolie also told The Times that she had “a bad experience with Harvey Weinstein in my youth.” Since then, she said, she has chosen “never to work with him again and [to] warn others when they did.” The reports ratcheted up the scandal surrounding Weinstein, who was fired Sunday from the Weinstein Co. They not only describe a mounting number of alleged incidents, but document the systematic harassment, abuse and intimidation of women — almost always young actresses trying to succeed in movies. Attorneys for Weinstein did not immediately return messages Tuesday. The New Yorker quoted Weinstein representative Sallie Hofmeister responding that “any allegations of nonconsensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein,” adding that Weinstein believes that all on-the-record allegations were consensual.
Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday withdrew his candidacy for the fresh presidential election ordered by the Supreme Court, saying the election commission has not made changes to avoid the “irregularities and illegalities” cited in the nullified August vote. Odinga’s challenge led the court to nullify the election that President Uhuru Kenyatta won. It is not clear how the new election, set for Oct. 26, will go forward. (AP)

A new recording The New Yorker on Tuesday revealed an audio recording made by the New York Police Department in 2015 in which Harvey Weinstein says he groped a model named Ambra Battilana Gutierrez. At the time, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. announced that an investigation didn’t support criminal charges. Karen Friedman-Agnifilo, chief assistant district attorney, said Tuesday that “what emerged from the audio was insufficient to prove a crime under New York law, which requires prosecutors to establish criminal intent.” (AP)
The New Yorker reports claims by 13 women who say Weinstein sexually harassed or assaulted them between the 1990s and
2015. The incidents range from unwanted groping to forced sex. In the article, Rosanna Arquette and Mira Sorvino are among those who claim Weinstein sexually harassed them. Arquette described a 1990s incident at a hotel in which Weinstein tried to make her give him a massage and then attempted to lead her hand to his penis. Afterward, the actress said, “He made things very difficult for me for years.” The New Yorker also reported that 16 former and current executives and assistants at the Weinstein Co. and Miramax either witnessed or knew of Weinstein’s unwanted sexual advances. “All sixteen said the behavior was widely known within both Miramax and the Weinstein Company.” JAKE COYLE (AP)

Closing out series hasn’t come easy for Cleveland Since 1999, the Indians are 3-16 when they get a chance to advance MLB PLAYOFF The Indians entered October with a clear mission and everything required to complete it. They pushed the World Series to the 10th inning of Game 7 last year without winning, and they intend to avenge that loss. They morphed into a 102-win powerhouse, a team worthy of claiming the franchise’s first title since 1948. But their goal grew complex as two losses in the Bronx pushed the AL Division Series to Game 5. The Indians must not only beat the Yankees tonight. They must also confront playoff demons after failing to finish off Ne New York when they held a 2-0 serie series lead.
Since taking a 3-1 lead in the World Series last year, the Indians have lost five consecutive potential series-clinching games. In 2007, Cleveland also blew a 3-1 lead in the ALCS. In the 2001 ALDS, they took a 2-1 lead over Seattle, then lost the next two. They led the 1999 ALDS 2-0 before the Red Sox stunned them. In the past 18 years, the Indians are 3-16 in games in which they could have closed out a playoff round. But it would be frivolous to believe that 2007 Boston hero J.D. Drew or any other ghost from clinchers past would have an impact tonight. The Indians pride themselves on staying present and refusing to grant meaning to past results. Maybe the Indians didn’t feel pressure in Game 4. But they sure made miscues commonly
attributed to it by committing four errors and walking six. In the regular season they had fewer errors and fewer walks than any other team in the AL. The Indians should still hold the edge tonight. The Yankees will start CC Sabathia, a former ace forced to thrive on guile. The Indians will start current ace Corey Kluber, the presumptive Cy Young favorite, on regular rest. The Yankees shellacked Kluber in Game 2, scoring six runs in 22/3 innings, but an off game can’t change his status as one of the game’s most dominant pitchers. Cleveland’s offense may also get a jolt. DH Edwin Encarnacion, who hit 38 homers with 107 RBIs this year, missed both games in New York with a sprained ankle and could return tonight.

The offbeat Midland An underwear model and his pals just dropped the year’s best country album
MUSIC REVIEW Perhaps Midland — a rising Texas trio with an old-school sound and a fantastic new album out now — has an atypical résumé. Frontman Mark Wystrach is a former Calvin Klein underwear model so preposterously hot you’ve already stopped reading this to go Google him. Bassist Cameron Duddy is an actor from California, not to mention the director of the music video for Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic.” Guitarist Jess Carson used to run a vintage clothing shop in Portland. Sure, Midland’s attempt to brand itself as a troupe of honkytonk road dogs smells dubious, but if you make it a deal breaker, you’ll be missing out on the year’s best country album. It’s called “On the Rocks,” and the whole thing sounds about as tight as the inseam of Dwight Yoakam’s blue jeans — but you might hear a pinch of Moe Bandy and a splash of Juice Newton in there, too. As for the band band’s s lyri lyric
sheet, it’s riddled with contradictions that you won’t even notice. This music is so smooth, so handsome, so stylish and so bright, the band ends up getting away with everything. Early in the tracklist, Wystrach shoots a fire-starting wink across the dance floor, claiming, “There’s not enough love in the world, so we should make a little.” But later on, he’s exhausted, crooning over a breezy jangle about how “this old heart needs a break.” And who knows how these guys find chemical relief out in the real world. Their vocal harmonies are far too pretty to account for secondhand carcinogens inhaled in “Burn Out.” And despite the weed cravings expressed during “Altitude Adjustment,” one would bet cash money that Midland’s rehearsal space smells more like Burberry cologne and sandalwood aromatherapy candles than kush and Bugles. There’s also “Drinkin’ Problem,” a barfly anthem worthy of
Midland — made up of guitarist Jess Carson, frontman Mark Wystrach and bassist Cameron Duddy — looks honky-tonk, but don’t let ‘em fool you.
‘Los Ageless’ St. Vincent
“Los Ageless,” the first single off St. Vincent’s album “MASSEDUCTION,” out Friday, has something to say about the wellness-obsessed culture of Los Angeles. In the video, the indie pop singer is doll-like as she’s primped and prodded and poked in doctor’s offices and salons. In the end, she’s eating a weird green food with a pained expression on her face, as if to say she’s really hating this life … but can’t seem to quit it. BRYANNA CAPPADONA (EXPRESS)

The band will accompany “CMT on Tour” headliner Jon Pardi to The Fillmore in Silver Spring on Nov. 3. a spot in country music’s great book of sorrow-drowners. The hook is funny like a boardwalk Tshirt (“People say I got a drinkin’ problem, but I got no problem
drinkin’ at all”), but the second verse goes grim (“Last call gets later and later/ I come in here so I don’t have to hate her” ). That’s a heavy mood swing for such a light song, but it feels familiar. We all do this kind of acting in real life. We yuk-yuk through our pain; we delude ourselves about our ugly habits. Intentional or not, this album makes an important point: It shouldn’t matter whether a country artist sings from the depths of their experience or the margins of their imagination. Beck goes to his happy place MUSIC REVIEW Beck has never been very good at hiding in his music how he’s feeling, and this especially applies to “Colors,” a bubbly, hook-driven new album (out Friday) he made with in-demand producer Greg Kurstin, best known for his work with Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Sia and Foo Fighters. Beck might be known more for his finely tuned downer rock, but he’s mostly angst-free here.
The 10-track LP is Beck’s most accessible, radio-friendly offering in years but, this being Beck, it’s brilliantly layered, with plenty of interesting things happening under the hood. There’s pan flute, handclaps and glockenspiel all on it. The singer-songwriter hasn’t been this overtly poppy since “Midnite Vultures” in 1999, but that was harsh-sounding and more than a little nutty in comparison.
Disney Channel renews “Raven’s Home” for Season 2
“Colors” is smooth and warm and light. “Found our way through the lost years/ Now the day brings it all here,” he sings in the title song. Beck hinted this direction was coming in 2015 when he released “Dreams,” the lead single off this new album. It’s a strummy, drum-driven dance song that’s all about putting your arms in the air but belied by lyrics about “trouble on the way.” Other songs continue to trace his happy streak. The super “Up All Night” is a sweet song about older lovers — or maybe

dads taking care of babies — in the quiet hours when “night is crawling up to the day.” “No Distraction” feels reminiscent of The Fixx, and “Seventh Heaven” sounds like something from The Stone Roses. “Square One” finds Beck going in and out of his falsetto beautifully to create a perfect slice of shimmering pop. Perhaps the most unconventional song is “Wow,” a trippy, cowboy-dance hip-hop tune that swipes the theme from “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” and adds it to lyrics seemingly inspired by weed. Marketing guy for ‘Little Italy’ gets big raise A report from news site The Blast suggests actress Emma Roberts was involved in the recent breakup of Hayden Christensen and Rachel Bilson. Sources said Bilson found texts from Roberts on Christensen’s phone, which led to their split after a 10-year on-and-off relationship. Christensen and Roberts co-star in the upcoming film “Little Italy,” as a couple finding love despite their families’ competing pizza shops.
Justin Bieber is pursuing a film career, sources told Us Weekly, and he asked Adam Sandler and David Spade to dinner last month in order to “pick their brains” about the movie business. “They had a great time,” the source continued. “Justin had a lot of questions for them about the movie world.” Us Weekly noted that Bieber has appeared as himself on “Saturday Night Live” and in two concert documentaries, and played a serial killer in two episodes of “CSI” in 2010-2011. “[Bieber] is trying to educate himself about the industry and learn more about it,” the source added. “He wants to break into acting and directing/producing.” (EXPRESS)

In a YouTube interview with Ellen DeGeneres shared Tuesday, Oprah Winfrey revealed that she recently visited the bank for the first time since 1988. “I just wanted to go there just to do it. I stood in line.” She said she was depositing a check for $1 million. “It felt fantastic,” Winfrey said of the experience. She later clarified, “Actually, it was $2 million.” (EXPRESS)

According to an Instagram post from a Los Angeles-based celebrity tattoo artist, singer Jhene Aiko has gotten a tattoo on her arm of boyfriend Big Sean wearing a bowtie. E! News noted that the tattoo comes just a week after Aiko finalized her divorce from ex-husband Dot da Genius. Aiko and Sean have been together for about a year. Aiko told Billboard magazine in September that Sean is the “love of [her] life.” (EXPRESS)
