Washington House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has told colleagues he will act to raise the federal debt limit even if he has to rely on the votes of House Democrats, Republican aides said Thursday. It was not immediately clear, however, whether Boehner would stand by such a position publicly or whether it would prove to be a trial balloon allowing him to gauge the reaction of the GOP’s tea party wing. P re sident Ba r ac k Oba ma warned Thursday that the looming debt-ceiling crisis could be

In a speech in suburban Maryland, Obama urged Republicans to “take a vote, stop this farce, and end this shutdown right now.” With concern shifting to a deadline in two weeks to raise the debt limit, aides say that Boehner has told colleagues he will not permit a vote on a “clean” short-term spending bill that does not end or delay parts of the new federal health-care law. But the aides indicated that Boehner is willing to risk infuriating some of the most conservative House GOP lawmakers by relying on a majority of Democratic votes to pass a debt-

Research: Doctors Ignore Advice on Giving Antibiotics Chicago Repeated warnings that antibiotics don’t work for most sore throats and bronchitis have failed to stop overuse: Doctors prescribed these drugs for most adults seeking treatment at a rate that remained high over more than a decade, researchers found. The results are in two analyses of national health surveys from the late 1990s to 2010, representing more than 2 million annual visits to doctors’ offices or emergency rooms. The research was presented Thursday at an infectious diseases meeting in San Francisco. Antibiotics can have bad side effects — including stomach pain and severe diarrhea — and inappropriate prescriptions put patients

The findings show reducing inappropriate prescribing “is frustratingly, disappointingly slow,” said Dr. Jeffrey Linder, a physician-researcher at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters Thursday afternoon that Republican leaders have long said they would not allow a default but that they “flirted with default” in 2011, hurting the economy by triggering a downgrade of the U.S. credit rating. A U.S. default, which has never happened before, would lead to a dramatic cut in federal spending and delays in Social Security checks and could undermine the traditional U.S. role as a financial safe-haven. “There’s precedent for a government shutdown; there is no precedent for default,” Goldman Sachs chief executive Lloyd Blankfein said Wednesday after he and other business leaders met with Obama. 114 Dead After Ship Capsizes Near Italy It was the third ship of the night to head toward the tiny Italian island of Lampedusa packed to the brim with migrants seeking a better life in Europe. The first, filled with Syrians, arrived at about 10 p.m. The second, carrying Eritreans, slipped in at 2 a.m. The third never reached land. At least 114 people died and scores more were missing late Thursday after a crowded fishing boat carrying African migrants from Tripoli caught fire, flipped over and sank, Italian officials said. In the dark of night, hundreds of men, women and children who didn’t know how to swim were flung into the sea about a halfmile from Lampedusa. Between

to avoid the fire, the boat capsized. Women and children apparently fared the worst. Only three of the boat’s estimated 100 women were rescued — and none of the 10 children believed on board were saved, said Simona Moscarelli, a legal expert for the International Organization for Migration in Rome. Two of the dead were pregnant. “Most of them can’t swim,” she said. “Only the strongest survived.”

Of about 500 migrants onboard the capsized ship Thursday, only 159 were rescued.

450 and 500 people were believed to be on board; health commissioner Antonio Candela said only 159 were rescued. “We need only caskets, certainly not ambulances,” said Pietro Bartolo, chief of Lampedusa health services. Bartolo, speaking to Italy’s Radio 24, put the death toll at 94 but said it would certainly rise as search operations continued. Italian coast guard divers later reported seeing an additional 20 bodies near the ship. The deaths of so many may have come down to the lack of a cellphone. The 66-foot boat left from Tripoli with migrants from Eritrea, Ghana and Somalia, Italian coast guard spokesman Marco Di Milla said. It nearly reached its target, getting as far as nearby Conigli Island before it took on water, Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said. Usually, smugglers have mobile

The District is already bearing the brunt of the government shutdown. It’s our neighbors who are furloughed, our museums that are shuttered, our parks that are off-limits. That ends at 10 p.m. Friday. Thanks to terrible timing, Metro has its own shutdown planned for Washington. Service adjustments scheduled for the entire weekend are about as inconvenient as it can get: The Red Line won’t be operating between Dupont Circle and NoMa-Gallaudet. That means Union Station, Judiciary Square and Farragut North will be closed. And no one will be transferring to the Red Line at Gallery Place or Metro Center. In addition, the Blue and Yellow lines will be running trains just once every 16 minutes. And at the Greenbelt station on the Green Line, you might have to wait up to 25 minutes. Maybe disheartened federal workers won’t want to leave home, but if anyone is looking for a change of scenery and a way to avoid switching between trains

Six-Packed During the shutdown, Metro is continuing its regular weekday schedule. But passengers will see only six-car trains, instead of a mix of six- and eight-car trains.

and shuttles all weekend, there are a few new transportation options to consider.

Enterprise CarShare The car-rental giant now lends out wheels by the hour through a system that’s similar to Zipcar. Enterprise debuted the CarShare program in D.C. on Sept. 23 with a fleet of about 40 vehicles. Expect that number to double within 30 days, Enterprise’s Michael Macari says. “We’re going to put cars in all eight wards,” says Macari, who’s

targeting Dupont Circle, Gallery Place, Union Station and Adams Morgan for the expansion. If you’re worr ied about when that next paycheck i s c om i n g, t he n join soon. Until the end of the year, the $2 5 appl ic at ion fee and t he f irst $40 annual membership fee are being waived. Rates have started out low — many cars are available for $5 an hour, even on weekends. People who sign up online have to wait to get their cards in the mail. But you can get behind the wheel ASAP by visiting the Enterprise office at 1029 Vermont Ave. NW (open weekdays 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m.noon), where you can get verified on the spot.

Capital Bikeshare A bisected Red Line will make trips between Bethesda and Silver Spring pretty tough. But the new Capital Bikeshare stations that opened in Montgomery County, Md., last Friday could counteract that. Now, all you have to do to travel from one neighborhood to the other is grab a bike from a dock and ride it along the Capital Crescent Trail — although it’s technically shut down in Washington, the trail is open in Montgomery County.

RelayRides This service that helps people rent out their cars has been available in Washington for a few years. This week, the company announced it was suspending hourly rentals and switching to a daily-or-longer model. It’s a move that’ll make RelayRides more money, and it should also bring in extra cash for folks who list their cars and trucks on the site. Federal workers have to like the sound of that. If they’re renters, they’ll also like the prices — for instance, you can borrow a truck for $50 a day. That might be overkill for just getting around D.C. this weekend, but I’m willing to pay that to help a few people move out of our House.

Driver Killed After Car Chase to Capitol 1-year-old found in vehicle after deadly police confrontation Washington A woman with a year-old child led Secret Service and police on a harrowing car chase from the White House past the Capitol on Thursday, attempting to penetrate the security barriers at both national landmarks before she was fatally shot, police said. The child survived. “I’m pretty confident this was not an accident,” said Metropoli-

tan Police Chief Cathy Lanier. Still, Capitol Police said there appeared to be no terrorist link. Law enforcement officials said the car was registered to Miriam Carey, 34, of Stamford, Conn. The officials said they believe Carey was driving the car. The woman driving the car was unarmed, law enforcement sources said. Tourists, congressional staff and even some senators watched as a caravan of law enforcement vehicles chased a black Infiniti with Connecticut license plates down Constitution Avenue outside the Capitol. non and Lincoln’s Cottage, for example, are still open. Want to take in the sights, even if you won’t be able to visit them? Head to the top of the W Hotel or the Newseum, where you can enjoy beautiful vistas of our now-shuttered city — and maybe get that photo op you were hoping for.

Yes, our national parks and monuments are technically closed as long as the federal government is shut down. But some folks have refused to take “closed” for an answer. Or they’ve managed to find exceptions.

Ford’s Theatre Show

World War II Memorial A day after aging veterans surged past barricades at the National World War II Memorial to honor comrades, the National Park Service announced that veterans have the right to be there and won’t be barred in the future. And so far they haven’t been.

Other ‘Closed’ Sites At the Korean War and Vietnam War memorials, veterans and other visitors have simply walked around or pushed aside barricades to enter the sites. At some of D.C.’s playgrounds on federal property, parents lifted their children over the padlocked fences. And while we’re not encouraging anarchy, even the Park Service admits it’s impossible to close everything off.

Football Games Sports fans have been fretting about this weekend’s college football games, and, lucky for them, an exception has been made for U.S. military academy football teams. Despite the shutdown, Army will travel to Boston College for Saturday’s game, and Air Force will play at Navy in Annapolis. The decision affects this weekend’s games only. Future games will be evaluated as events unfold in the coming days. ( T WP/AP/E XPRESS)

Have a Drink Because a drink makes everything better, right? There are special happy hour deals for government workers that may extend to the rest of us, too. The Washington Post has compiled a list of more than four dozen specials; find it at wapo.st/GzwBqp.

Ford’s Theatre had to cancel performances of “The Laramie Project” because it’s required to close during the shutdown, but the show will go on. Ford’s will present free performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Tuesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ in D.C. If the shutdown ends in time, the play will resume through Oct. 27.

Get Outdoors

Shut Down, Not Shut Out

You may not be able to go paddle boating in the Tidal Basin, but you can still spend time outdoors, as long as you go to municipal parks. A few hidden gems include the Georgetown Waterfront Park, below, and Yards Park. The Montgomery Country, Md., section of Rock Creek is also open — the county parks north of the District are unaffected by the shutdown.

It’s been a stressful week, experiencing the first government shutdown in 17 years. (They even took our panda cam away!) And we’re likely to remain frustrated into the weekend, as the national parks and monuments we’ve come to rely on for entertainment and exercise remain shuttered. But have no fear. Your plans can be salvaged with just a few twists, tweaks and work-arounds. (Note: If the folks on Capitol Hill unexpectedly decide to play nice and end this thing before the weekend, you still might want to hang on to this list. You never know what’s going to happen next in This Town.)

Find a Substitution If you’re a tourist here on vacation or a resident with nagging family members who picked now to pay a visit, your weekend may not be what was expected, but it doesn’t have to be ruined. There are alternatives to every museum you’re missing out on (for a list of substitutions, see next page). They may not have the Hope Diamond, but the Hope Diamond is kind of a letdown anyway, to be honest. A few substitutions: The National Building Museum has an interactive kids’ exhibit featuring building blocks, as well as plenty of architecture for grown-ups.

If you have a government ID, admission is free during the shutdown. The National Geographic Museum, with its exhibits on exploration and biodiversity, could sub in for the Natural History Museum. Government workers can get in for free during the shutdown. The Spy Museum and the National Museum of Crime and Punishment can be expensive — admission is more than $20 for adults at each museum — but kids love ’em.

Get a Good Meal Have you heard that D.C. is an up-andcoming city for foodies? Many tourists who are in town for the usual Mall-andmonuments march — and some residents, too — never experience some of our best restaurants. (Note: Many eateries are offering deals to furloughed government workers; the Washington Post has a lengthy list at wapo.st/1fFSncv.)

Get Out of the City The farther you move away from the epicenter of the shutdown, the less likely you are to find things that are affected. Cross the river and take in the historic charm of Old Town Alexandria. How about a day trip to Annapolis or Harpers Ferry? Or a jaunt down to Virginia wine country? Hey, Congress, the Joke’s on You: The Washington comedy group Capitol Steps is having a lot of fun these days, not despite the shutdown, but because of it. The 32-year-old troupe has been revamping its act all week, prepping for its Friday show at the Ronald Reagan Building. “I think all the job creation they’re doing is for political comedians,” quipped Elaina Newport, a writer for the group. Even though the federal government isn’t up and running, many folks in the area are. “Closed” signs on the C&O Canal path, Capital Crescent Trail and others that wind through federal property have largely been ignored by exercisers who have found ways around the barricades. But by Thursday morning, the shutdown had already altered Deborah Smith’s fitness plan. When she showed up at the National Mall at 5 a.m., Smith realized she was alone. Uncomfortable without a police presence, she postponed her workout until after sunrise. Bob Stephen, 46, of Burke, Va., enjoyed empty streets on his Mall run, but he had other worries. “What I’ve been concerned about are the Marine Corps Marathon and the Army Ten-Miler,” said Stephen, who has been training for the pair of October events. Organizers have announced that neither event will be affected by the shutdown, but other races have scrambled to make adjustments. The Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon, slated for Sunday, has been postponed until Nov. 10. R agna r Relay co-founder Tanner Bell said he never thought closures could affect his 198-mile event between Cumberland, Md., and D.C. this weekend. But Ragnar must trim three legs from the route. “A big part of the race is the accomplishment of running all the way,” Bell said. But another big part is being able to roll with the punches. Start of Perfect Ending? Maryland unbeaten as it opens ACC play in last year in league

Air Force at Navy SAT., 11:30 A.M., CBS

Main storyline: The festivities. The game goes on despite the government shutdown. Navy will honor the team that went to the Cotton Bowl with Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Roger Staubach 50 years ago. Player to watch: Navy FB Chris Swain. In each game, he’s been held under 50 yards rushing despite double-digit carries. PATRICK SEMANSKY (AP)

College Football Maryland begins its ACC farewell tour with a perfect record, a place in the top 25 and a pretty good feeling about its best start since 2001. “Everyone has a little bit more swag,” quarterback C.J. Brown said this week. “They feel confident because they’re going out there and executing and doing what they have to do. Everyone is getting recognized for it. We’re No. 25 in the country.” It’s the first time Maryland (4-0) has been ranked since coach Randy Edsall took over before the 2011 season. The Terrapins won all of their non-league games this season by a collective 159-41 score. They’re well rested, too, after getting last weekend off following a 37-0 rout of West Virginia on Sept. 21. It would appear as if Maryland is poised to begin its final season in the ACC under ideal circumstances — except that the opposition Saturday is No. 8 Florida State, and the game will be held in a stadium where the Terrapins have never won. Florida State (4-0) owns a 21-2 advantage in the series between the teams, including 11-0 at home.

Local Preview

Ball St. at Virginia Maryland has outscored its opponents 159-41 in its first four games. The Terps play at No. 8 Florida State on Saturday.

No. 25 Maryland at No. 8 Fla. St. SAT., NOON, ESPN

Main storyline: Are the Terps for real? They are third in the country in points against, lead the nation in sacks and have won each game so far by double digits. This is Maryland’s first week in the top 25 since 2010. Player to watch: Maryland LB Marcus Whitfield. He has a teamhigh 5½ sacks and will need to pressure Florida State standout quarterback Jameis Winston. J.T.

“We are 4-0, they’re 4-0, it’s a nationally televised game. It doesn’t get any better than that,” Brown said. “This is what you play for. To go out there and prove yourself. This will be a good test for us.” The Terrapins, who haven’t defeated Florida State since 2004, have been installed as a 15-point underdog. But this is a Maryland team playing with poise and precision that hasn’t been seen in years. Regardless of the odds, the players like their chances of pulling off an upset. “Talentwise we’re as good as we’ve ever been,” guard De’Onte

Arnett said. “We’re jelling completely. Everybody has bought into the program, and now is our time.” The game against Florida State marks the beginning of the end of Maryland’s run in the ACC. Next year, the Terrapins will begin play in the Big Ten, and they’d like nothing better than to make some noise in the ACC before their exit. “We’re nowhere near where we need to be,” Edsall said. “We’ve got to continue to stay humble and hungry. We got to this point because we’ve done things the right way in terms of what it takes to win at this level.” DAVID GINSBURG (AP)

The WIldcats are 4-0 and are averaging 41.3 points a game. They’ll need to score a lot to keep up with the Buckeyes, who lead the Big Ten at 48.2 points a game.

Two of the best defenses in the country face off in this Pac 12 showdown. Huskies running back Bishop Sankey (607 yards, 5 TDs) could be key to an upset.

The Terps have already matched their win total from last season, but this will be their first real test as they open up ACC play in Tallahassee, Fla. J.T.

Main storyline: How can the Cavaliers score? If you take out the 49-0 win over VMI, Virginia is averaging 10.7 points a game. The Cavaliers rank 102nd in the country in scoring. Player to watch: Cavaliers QB Greyson Lambert. When will it be time to bench David Watford and give the freshman a chance?

North Carolina at Virginia Tech SAT., 12:30 P.M., FOX 5

Main storyline: Keeping up the hot streak. After an opening-week 35-10 loss to top-ranked Alabama, the Hokies have run off four straight wins. In those victories, they have allowed 11 points a game. Player to watch: Virginia Tech CB Brandon Facyson. The freshman is tied for the NCAA lead with four interceptions, and he could see time at receiver. JEFFRE Y TOMIK (E X PRES S)

WEEKLY SUPERLATIVES

Most impressive second-year QB: Andrew Luck

The Denver Broncos are the only team in the league with three running backs with 25 carries or catches this season.

Luck and the Colts face Russell Wilson and the Seahawks in a battle of two QBs who have avoided a sophomore slump. Luck’s ability to come up in the clutch gives him the edge.

Rushing: A Group Effort Half of the league is regularly using more than 1 running back NFL When the Bengals need a yard, they give the ball to BenJarvus GreenEllis and let him plow straight ahead. If they need a big play on third down? In comes rookie Giovani Bernard to catch a pass or make a cutback that turns into something special. And Cincinnati isn’t alone in splitting the role of running back. Half of the teams in the NFL are using more than one running back regularly this season, underscoring an evolution in how teams are handling the position. Fifteen teams have two running backs with 25 runs or catches so far this season, according to STATS LLC. And

Passes caught by running backs this season, entering Week 5. In the past 20 years, running backs have caught more than 2,200 passes combined each season, according to STATS.

another team, Denver, has three, its “Rock, Paper, Scissors” approach with Ronnie Hillman, Montee Ball and Knowshon Moreno. For many teams, having two complementary backs is better than leaving it up to one. “The league is just changing in a way,” said Bernard, the first running back chosen in the draft last April. “Rather than one specific back, you need a lot of backs that can do different things.” Running back combinations have always been part of the NFL’s fabric. The difference now is that teams

are looking not for two who run the ball with different styles, but for a combination that can run it straight ahead or catch it in the league’s evolution toward passheavy offenses. “The good teams all have one of those,” Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said. “It’s important. For guys like that, they’re easy, low-risk plays with big-time results. So those backs are huge.” Denver has been the pacesetter so far when it comes to using complementary running backs. No other team has three with at least 25 runs or catches. No other team comes close to what the undefeated Broncos have done through four games. “At first, it was tough,” Ball said. “But now, understanding the situation, you’ve got to be able to adapt in this league. Whenever I get it and get it running, I’m trying to do the most with the football.” JOE K AY (AP)

No Takers: Quarterback Josh Freeman was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday, a week after he was benched in favor of rookie Mike Glennon. The winless Bucs made the latest move during their bye week after general manager Mark Dominik contacted every other team in the NFL in an unsuccessful attempt to trade Freeman, left, a 4,000-yard passer a year ago and the team’s career leader with 1,144 completions and 80 touchdowns. (AP)

Ugliest divisional game: Eagles-Giants

At least there should be scoring when the Eagles (1-3) visit Eli Manning and the Giants (0-4). New York has allowed 31 points or more in each game, and Philadelphia is coming off a 52-20 loss to Denver.

Most shockingly good matchup: Chiefs-Titans

Kansas City (4-0) has already doubled its win total from last year. The lone loss for Tennessee (3-1) came in overtime. Ryan Fitzpatrick will start for the Titans. JEFFREY TOMIK (E X PRES S)

SUNDAY, 1 P.M.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees has thrown for more than 300 yards in each game this season, and Jimmy Graham (27 catches, 458 yards, six TDs) became the first tight end ever to win player of the month. The Bears will try to keep pace with their balanced offense, which ranks third in scoring. Both teams force lots of turnovers, with Chicago leading the NFL with 14 takeaways. (J.T.)

Jacksonville could be on its way to a historically bad season, but the Jaguars have to win at least once, right? The Rams, who have lost three straight games by a combined 55 points, are a double-digit favorite. The Rams’ offense has managed just 47.3 yards a game on the ground, while their defense is giving up 133.5 rushing yards a game. This is the week Maurice Jones-Drew goes off. (J.T.)

Deep Thoughts With Davey Johnson In honor of his 2½ years as Nationals manager, here’s a look at some of Johnson’s best quotes. JAMES WAGNER ( THE WASHINGTON P OS T )

“Well none of my guys could, ’cause we can’t score.” — REACTING TO THE NEWS THAT BOSTON’S MIKE NAPOLI APPARENTLY WAS DATING A PORN STAR

“I’m thinking I might get checked into the hospital instead.” — ON BEING HONORED BY THE NATIONALS BEFORE A GAME ON SEPT. 18

“When I look in the mirror, I say, ‘Damn, you’re an old son of a [gun].’ ” — ON SHOWING HIS AGE

“I don’t have any answer. Just kind of nothing. Can’t get nothing going. It’s putting me in the loony bin.” — ON THE BAD OFFENSE IN A LOSS TO THE CARDINALS

First Taste of Postseason Rookies are expected to play a key role in this year’s playoffs MLB Playoffs The Los Angeles Dodgers were floundering before outfielder Yasiel Puig arrived. Jose Iglesias helped the Detroit Tigers move forward when their starting shortstop was suspended. The Atlanta Braves? They owe part of their success to Evan Gattis and Julio Teheran, two players in their first full seasons in the major leagues. There are now eight teams remaining in baseball’s postseason, and almost all of them have at least one key rookie who will soon be on the spot. These players have earned the confidence of their managers, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be growing pains along the way, now that the stakes are higher. “Everybody, whether you’ve played 100 years or you’re a rookie, there’s always a little anxiety when you get to postseason play,” Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. “It’s like teams playing in the Super Bowl. I don’t care how long they’ve played, there’s a difference.” The American League play-

the hitters aren’t bad, either. Gattis and Iglesias have been impressive all year, and Puig’s first few weeks with the Dodgers were spectacular, helping Los Angeles overcome a poor start to the season. “He’s been a real key for this club, just from the energy level and the clutch hits he’s been getting and the fun he has in the clubhouse,” Los Angeles outfielder Carl Crawford said. “So he’s definitely a guy that gets the team going every day, and we all feed off of that.” Puig hit .319 with 19 home runs in 104 games, but at times his aggressiveness led to mistakes like overthrowing cutoff men, getting thrown out going for an extra base or getting picked off after taking too big a lead at first base. “He’s definitely going to have to watch that,” Crawford said. “Base runners are at a premium in the playoffs, so you don’t want to get picked off in a situation where you can’t afford to.” The last rookie to win a World Series or championship series MVP award was right-hander Livan Hernandez, who won both for Florida in 1997. The only other rookie to win a World Series MVP was Larry Sherry of the Dodgers in 1959, according to STATS.

Night of a Kajillion Stars

Deep Space Sublime The awe-inspiring ‘Gravity’ pins viewers back in their seats for a breathtaking ride Film Review On its face, “Gravity” — a 3-D science-fiction action adventure about two astronauts at sea in a vast nightscape — sounds like just another disposable popcorn spectacle: an eye-popping, refreshingly escapist palate cleanser before the heavy stuff yet to come on a groaning board of an awards season. And it is. But when an artist of the caliber of Alfonso Cuaron is at the helm, “Gravity” not only delivers on its promise of a wildly entertaining space adventure, it becomes a groundbreaking addition to a genre already defined for the ages by the likes of “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Like Stanley Kubrick before him, Cuaron is a master of the cinematic medium as both pop and high art; there are few filmmakers with his instinctive facility for long, bravura

It goes without saying that ‘Gravity’ must be seen in theaters to be appreciated. This is also that rare case when 3-D is essential.

camera movements, breathtaking scope and taut storytelling. Thanks to Cuaron’s prodigious gifts, “Gravity” succeeds simultaneously as a simple, classic shipwreck narrative, and as an utterly breathtaking restoration of size and occasion to the movies themselves.

From its very first shot, “Gravity” pins viewers back in their seats, very rarely letting themselves regain their balance. The film opens on two NASA space travelers, mission specialist Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney), as they work outside their space shuttle, Stone trying to manage motion sickness on her first trip, Kowalski having fun with his nifty new jet pack and clowning around with Houston, hundreds of miles below. It’s not too much of a spoiler to relate that, soon enough, the laughing stops — after one of the most terrifying, inspiring and masterfully composed visual sequences to be seen on screen this year. What ensues is one character’s desperate attempt to survive as the oxygen runs out, an anguished scramble through a vast, unforgiving, pristinely silent universe. “ G r a v it y ” e v o k e s “A h s ,” “Aws” and, finally, simple awe. At the risk of sounding unforgivably hokey, it’s one hell of a ride. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST )

When I’m at a movie I find a little too scary or intense for comfort, I write “it’s just a movie” in my notebook. It takes me out of it a little bit. Calms me down. After “Gravity,” my notebook looks like the “All work and no play” pages in “The Shining.” This film is the most intense 90 minutes I have experienced in the theater in recent memory. And, yes, you should pay for the 3-D. And the Imax. If some theater is offering smell-o-vision, sign up for that, too. See “Gravity” in the most tricked-out theater you can, because those bells and whistles are key to the audience experience. The story is fine — bad things happen to attractive people in space — and Space George Clooney is almost a sendup of Earth George Clooney, all confident and roguish and dreamy and … sorry, what was I saying? Oh, the technology. Alfonso Cuaron uses the staggering depth of field that 3-D produces to show the vastness of our surroundings and just how small our home is. Add in the Imax, which will have you turning your head to take in all that’s on the edge of the frame — often nothing but space, receding into the distance — and you have the best blend of technology and story since 2011’s “Hugo.” “Gravity” isn’t just a show-offy tech demo (hi, “Avatar!”); it uses space-age technology (get it?) to create a new experience for filmgoers. It wouldn’t be as suspenseful or as terrifying or, frankly, as good without the 3-D but that’s like saying Disney’s “Snow White” wouldn’t have been as good without the animation. Both films are integrally linked with their technology, so much so that to separate story from form would be unfair. “Gravity” is more than a movie about traveling to the stars — it’s about bringing that experience, more realistically than ever, to people sitting in a different kind of dark. Dealt a Losing Hand Despite Timberlake and Affleck, gambling flick ‘Runner Runner’ just isn’t compelling

for his losses and then some. But, then again, Ivan can always use a smart, ballsy guy in his operation, so maybe Richie would like to come work for him.

Film Review A story like the one at the heart of “Runner Runner,” about a young American gambler who gets sucked way above his head into the criminal doings of a big-time offshore operator, would have found its ideal life as a tough, punchy, blackand-white programmer back in the 1950s. Today, it would have been most viable as a grandiose character study done on an operatic scale by a filmmaker like Martin Scorsese or Michael Mann. What’s actually onscreen in this vaguely ambitious but tawdry melodrama falls into an in-between no man’s land that endows it with no distinction whatsoever, a work lacking both style and insight into the netherworld it seeks to reveal. Despite an intriguing setup and Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake heading the cast, this Fox release holds a losing box-office hand.

SCOTT GARFIELD (TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX)

OCTOBER SHOWS FRI 4

Justin Timberlake, left, and Ben Affleck aren’t enough to save “Runner Runner.”

‘Runner Runner’ (R) Director: Brad Furman Stars: Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake In a Nutshell: A Princeton student gets involved with the king of online gambling.

Threatened with expulsion from Princeton unless he shuts down his online gambling site, finance grad student Richie Furst (Timberlake)

heads for Costa Rica determined to stick it to the king of computer gambling, Ivan Black (Affleck). Arriving during the boss’ annual blowout, the Midnight Black Expo, Richie cleverly scores an audience with the bodyguard-festooned Ivan. Lounging on his hero’s yacht, Richie brazenly accuses his relaxed host of cheating him on his site … and Ivan readily admits it. In the film’s best-written scene, the older man affably agrees to reimburse the kid

The Story of A Song Doctor ‘Butch Walker: Out of Focus’ profiles the prolific songwriter Film Review There’s an unattributed quote that often pops up in Internet searches on Butch Walker, a singer, songwriter and producer who is less wellknown for his own music than for the many hits he has written for others (among them, the 2003 Grammy-nominated “Girl All the Bad

Guys Want,” by Bowling for Soup). “There are two types of people in this world,” the saying goes: “People who love Butch Walker and those who merely haven’t heard of him.” As it turns out, Walker is pretty darn likable, if not lovable. “Butch Walker: Out of Focus” (available through iTunes, Amazon Instant, Google Play and on-demand cable) focuses on his music, mostly with his band the Black Widows, but also dipping into his 15-year career as the guitarist for the hair-metal band SouthGang. (Walker is

‘Butch Walker: Out of Focus’ (NR) Directors: Shane Valdes and Peter Harding In a Nutshell: You may not have heard of Butch Walker, above, but you’ve heard his work. The songwriter is the subject of this film.

‘Runner Runner’ lacks both a sense of style and insight into the netherworld it seeks to reveal. With Puerto Rican locations doubling for Costa Rica, the allure of Ivan’s world looks pretty tacky no matter how doused in money it is. The overriding problem with the film is that it lacks a real pulse, a throb of excitement that pulls you into this unsavory world. Director Brad Furman stuffs the screen with luxurious digs, fancy cars, cool boats, private jets and parties loaded with scantily clad women, but there’s no undercurrent, no intoxicating hook used to snare the audience, along with Richie, for the ride. from Georgia, and has a genial, aw-shucks demeanor on camera. Also, much shorter tresses than he used to.) His music is appealing, poppy, lyrically literate stuff, with a dark, sometimes cynical edge. But if you want to know more about his work cranking out hits for other stars — including Weezer, Train, Pink, Fall Out Boy, Katy Perry, Lindsay Lohan and myriad others — you’ll just have to look that up yourself. The film takes an unorthodox approach, scrupulously avoiding discussion of Walker’s work as a gifted song doctor. But there’s plenty of good listening, including extended portions of “Day Drunk” and “Synthesizers,” from Walker’s 2011 album “The Spade.” M I C H A E L O ’ S U L L I VA N (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Make a Clean Getaway Before you move, fix up your apartment to ensure you get your deposit back

TEDDYWOLFF (FOR EXPRESS)

Home Repairs

Before she moved out of her Van Ness apartment, Kim Dixson had to repaint her old walls the original color and fill holes that were created by hanging pictures.

Your new apartment is ready and waiting. But before you leave your old one, there are a few things to take care of. To make sure you get your entire security deposit back, leave your apartment in great condition. “The general rule is to return your apartment back to the way you got it,” says Hilary J. Andel, property manager at the Palette at Arts District in Maryland (5501 45th Ave., Hyattsville, Md.; 240-770-1768, bit.ly/1hiUTAR). Before Kim Dixson, 28, left her Van Ness apartment, the building’s management required her to repaint the brightly colored walls and fill holes that were created when she hung pictures and other objects. She didn’t know where to start. “I’m not big on manual labor,” says Dixson, an art director at the Advisory Board Company. “So I asked around to friends.” Instead of asking friends, we asked local experts how to tackle the tasks that most buildings will require before you move out. Fix It Up Continued from page R1

Clean the Fridge

Clean Carpet Stains

TEDDYWOLFF (FOR EXPRESS)

You never actually cleaned it before, have you? Cleaning expert Nikii Orozco of Maids in Black (maidsinblack.com) told us how to get rid of the stuff that’s been growing in the back for two years. Pick up: Dawn Platinum Power Clean dish soap, Mr. Clean multipurpose liquid, Windex, a sponge with a scrubbing side and appliance cleaner. Empty the fridge of everything. Unplug it to save energy. If your freezer has ice buildup, you may want to leave it open to defrost a bit as you clean. Take out anything that’s removable (shelves, drawers, etc.). Scrub down every part you removed in the sink with Dawn, soaking if needed. Dry with a clean towel. Rub the inside of the fridge down with Mr. Clean to disinfect completely. For any glass parts, use Windex. For the freezer, a warm cloth may work best. Clean the outside with a wet sponge and then use the appliance cleaner to make it shine.

Fix Holes in the Walls You’ve taken down your trendy wall art and now you’ve got not-so-trendy holes. Project manager William Angolia of American Handyman of DMV (3822 Ironwood Place, Hyattsville, Md.; 202-581-0911, bluearmyhandyman.com) takes us through making them disappear: Pick up: Durabond drywall finishing 5, 20, 45 or 90 (the numbers relate to how long it takes to dry), metal drywall pan and a 5- or 6-inch finishing knife (it looks like a smaller, heavy duty squeegee). In the pan, mix the Durabond with water according to the directions on the bottle. It should be the consistency of thick peanut butter.

Paint Your Walls That accent wall really livened up the place, but now you’ve got to make it white or beige again. We asked Stephen Gust, co-owner of Gust Renovations (1488 Caitlin Lane, Alexandria, Va.; 703-679-7322, bit.ly/15JjEAY) to tell us how: Ask your building management what they expect. Many are OK with you simply priming the walls.

PRICE POINT

Before applying the compound to the holes, make a slight indentation on the wall with the end of the finishing tool by pushing it gently against the spot where the hole is. This will help you fill the hole more easily. Then scrape the surface of the wall around the hole, making it as smooth as possible. Apply only enough compound to fill the hole, and let it dry. As the compound dries, it will shrink, so repeat the process one or two more times. Once filled and dried, sand the wall with fine sandpaper until smooth.

If they require you to paint, ask if the management will provide you with paint in the right color. Buy primer, a good brush and roller, and if you need it, paint. Gust recommends Benjamin Moore Aura paint in the color your building requests. Clean the wall as best you can with water, not soap. Allow a few hours for it to dry completely. Put Scotch Safe Release Blue

Masking Tape, or a similar product, over the areas you don’t want painted such as outlets and door frames. Lay a plastic or cloth tarp over the carpet. If your floor is hardwood or tile, it’s usually easier to clean it after with paint remover than to lay out a tarp. Make sure the air in the room is circulating by opening windows. Take your primer and cover the entire wall with it. Allow it to dry. If your building only requires you to

You probably can’t even remember where that stain came from, but it sure isn’t coming out easily. For help, we asked stain expert Anne Bolen, the mother of one spill-prone son and former owner of four dogs and three cats: Before trying more expensive methods, Bolen recommends you spray a cleaner from Woolite’s Oxy Deep line of carpet cleaners on your stain. Let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub to see if the stain comes out. If it doesn’t, it’s time to get tougher. Rent (or buy) a steam cleaner. One run over the stain with the steam cleaner should clean it quickly, but more might be needed. Make sure you clean the surrounding area, too. Most steam cleaners will dry as you go, but if not, put a fan on and get air moving to dry out the spot.

prime the walls, you can stop here. If your apartment requires it, paint your first coat of paint. If you’re using a roller, paint up and down. With a brush, Gust recommends holding it lightly and using even strokes with most of the movement coming from your wrist. Follow with a second coat of paint. For most walls, this should be enough. If color is still showing through, apply another coat. MATTHEW RAZAK (FOR EXPRESS)

CLAIRE FOLGER PHOTOS (EXCLUSIVE MEDIA)

New Ticket Option!

“Parkland” re-enacts the chaotic and fruitless efforts to save President John F. Kennedy’s life after he was shot in Dallas.

A Brutal Depiction ‘Parkland’ graphically re-enacts Kennedy’s assassination based on the known facts Film Review Seen through one lens, “Parkland,” Peter Landesman’s sober-minded, faithful re-enactment of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the three days that followed that event, was inevitable. During the assassination’s 50th-anniversary year, it’s natural that the cardinal trauma of the baby boomer generation would provide fodder for yet another feature film. Serious, careful and assiduously uninflected, Landesman’s often fascinating tick-tock stands as the anti“JFK,” Oliver Stone’s fever dream of a grand unified conspiracy theory. “Parkland” simply focuses on the known facts, with minimal stylistic embellishment. A film of modest ambition and workmanlike pacing, it breaks little new ground, either in form or content. “Parkland” begins with familiar newsreel footage of Kennedy’s visit to Texas on Nov. 22, 1963, when

he joshingly accepted a cowboy hat in Fort Worth before decamping for Dallas. As the president and first lady make their way to the motorcade, a young emergency medicine resident named Jim Carrico (Zac Efron) blearily prepares for another day at Parkland Memorial Hospital; an FBI agent named James Hosty (Ron Livingston) glances at one of the “Wanted for Treason” flyers that have appeared around Dallas in anticipation of Kennedy’s arrival; and a garment executive named Abraham Zapruder (Paul Giamatti) excitedly grabs his new Super-8 camera and heads to Dealey Plaza. We know what happens next. And Landesman — a former journalist making his directing debut here — dwells with graphic, at times morbid fascination on the fruitless attempts of Carrico and his team to save the president’s life. With shakycam techniques, Landesman effectively conveys the chaos and panic of what momentarily felt like a coup.

RUSSIAN BAZAAR ‘Parkland’ (PG-13) Director: Peter Landesman Stars: Zac Efron, above In a Nutshell: A recounting of the chaotic events that occurred at Dallas’ Parkland Hospital on the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Those sequences are excruciating to watch, but once “Parkland” leaves the hospital to catch up with the individuals who intersected with the assassination, the film becomes a gripping, even mesmerizing exploration of events for which there was no frame of reference — experiential, mythical or otherwise. Breaking It Up Is Hard to Do It’s a compelling, stirring tale. It’s tempting to describe the dispersal of 2,500 pieces from Herbert and Dorothy Vogel’s collection — with 50 works being donated to each of 50 American museums — as a wholesale destruction rather than a disassembly. The story inspires, and not just for the couple’s generosity. Now worth untold millions, the collection is jaw-dropping in scope. But so were the almost obsessive-compulsive buying habits of the Vogels, who housed the entire collection in a one-bedroom apartment, financ-

Film Review If the 2008 documentary “Herb & Dorothy” looked at the creation of one of the world’s great art collections, a trove of nearly 5,000 pieces of mainly minimalist and conceptual art put together by a New York postal worker and his librarian wife, “Herb & Dorothy 50x50” is the story of its disassembly.

Director: Megumi Sasaki In a Nutshell: A sequel to “Herb & Dorothy,” this documentary captures an ordinary couple’s extraordinary gift of art to the nation as they close the door on their life as collectors.

ries of the bequest, sometimes sitting in as docents struggle to give viewers the tools to connect with art that, for a lot of folks, may not even look like art. One piece, shown in their apartment, is nothing more than an inch or two of string. The view of the 50x50 project as a destruction, Dorothy says, couldn’t be further from the truth. “I don’t think it broke it up,” she says. “It brought it together.” MICHAEL

Those interludes are when “Future Folk” literally sings, with d’Aulaire showing off his virtuosity on the banjo and Klaitz — the more natural screen performer of the two — harmonizing with a soaring, Orbisonian tenor. The rest of the movie follows the men as they try desperately to save the Earth they’ve come to love. Like a zero-g version of the dBs, “Future Folk” wends its way into viewers’ hearts and ears, singing old-timey tunes about farmin’ space worms.

If your local “Gravity” screenings are all sold out, this is the perfect time to indulge in some light, sweet-natured counterprogramming with “The History of Future Folk,” a delightful sci-fi adventure that simultaneously strips the genre down to its low-tech basics and infuses it with audacious new verve. Future Folk is real-life bluegrassy musical duo Nils d’Aulaire and Jay Klaitz, who have been gigging around New York for the past 10 years. But “The History of Future Folk” (available via Amazon Instant, iTunes and on-demand cable) isn’t a documentary; rather it’s a playful, fancy-filled origin story in which they play interplanetary travelers sent from a distant orb called Hondo in order to save Earth from an oncoming comet. Outfitted in puffy red suits and matching plastic buckets, d’Aulaire

In ‘Magic Magic,’ a California girl has a very bad trip in Chile Film Review

“Magic Magic,” a troubling glimpse of one woman’s paranoid spiral, may be best known as the 2013 collaboration between writer-director Sebastian Silva and actor Michael Cera that didn’t get a lot of hype. The other, “Crystal Fairy,” wowed crowds at Sundance. “Magic Magic,” which also premiered at the festival, didn’t get as much love. It didn’t even get a theatrical release (it’s available via Redbox, iTunes, Amazon Instant and on-demand cable).

And yet “Magic Magic,” no doubt a flawed movie, is better than plenty of other big-screen films. The movie follows Alicia (Juno Temple), a California girl who has never left the U.S. but finds herself in Chile visiting her cousin, Sara (Emily Browning). After Alicia arrives, Sara unexpectedly has to take care of something, foisting the newcomer on her boyfriend, Agustin, his sister and their oddball friend, Brink (Cera). The group heads to the beachside home of Agustin’s parents, and things start to get strange. Agustin’s sister is standoffish, and Brink is a loose cannon who takes every joke too far, but none of that warrants the fear and anger that Alicia begins to

experience. By the time Sara reappears, her cousin is in desperate need of psychiatric help. “Magic Magic” is an intriguing study of a character who’s difficult to pin down. Likewise, it’s hard to put a finger on exactly what this strange and ominous film is. STEPHANIE MERRY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

lookout FALL TV PREMIERES

LIFETIME

Washington Post television critic Hank Stuever reviews and rates new fall shows.

‘Witches of East End’ Sunday, 10 p.m., Lifetime | Julia Ormond, above, stars as Joanna, a witch in a seaside town who is cursed to lose her daughters, Freya and Ingrid (Jenna Dewan-Tatum and Rachel Boston), over and over — giving birth to them again each time they die. She decides to break the curse by casting a spell over her girls so that they won’t dabble in witchcraft or know their true nature. Now they’re grown and fate has come calling on the night of Freya’s engagement party: Spells are cast, gloom and agony are foretold, and, when Freya starts making out with her fiance’s brother, a vase of roses bursts into flames. If that stirs you (and if your fingers need a break from typing all your erotic fan fiction), then “Witches of East End” isn’t the worst you could do. The show has a sincerity about its silliness and light spookiness; for a moment there, it’s almost as if “True Blood” tried to conceive a demon baby with “Bunheads.” It didn’t turn out quite right, but that’s why we keep all those Mason jars in the basement. With less competition in D.C., local clothing startups get a captive, ready-made audience Fashion

Ever since he started his eponymous line of American-made button-downs and sportswear for men in D.C. in 2011, Read Wall has been tempted to decamp to New York, where a fashion label like his could benefit from access to both quality materials and a larger client base. “I’ve gotten close to moving,” Wall says. “But I stay in D.C. because the fashion scene here is not quite as saturated. There’s more of a frontier feel to it.” Wall is among multiple style entrepreneurs, from designers to website gurus, who are working

D.C.’s fledgling fashion landscape to their advantage: Because there is less competition, it’s easier for such companies to make a name for themselves, and because of the comparatively limited number of outlets to choose from, D.C. residents serve as a sort of captive audience hungry for homegrown style. Take Uyen Tang and Haya Tetroashvili, who are launching online indie clothing and accessories retailer StyleCable (stylecable.com) later this month. Tang says their “Etsy meets Kickstarter”model lets rising design talents accept pre-orders for new collections, thus limiting their financial risks. “When we first started StyleCable, people were like, ‘Why aren’t you going to New York or L.A. or Miami?’ ” Tang says. “But it’s harder to differentiate ourselves in those markets. D.C. is more cost-effective.

NUMARI

Better Than It Seams

Local clothier Numari lets women customize frocks by color, hemline and more.

There’s less competition and a more supportive community in fashion and the startup scene.” Anthom, another D.C.-based e-boutique, also sells eclectic, lesser-known brands. Founded in April by Carla Cabrera, Ashley Turchin

and Marshall Johnson, the company partners with emerging designers to create exclusive capsule collections (shopanthom.com). Think geometric leather purses by Chiyome ($345) and Ten & Co.’s loafers made from recycled Moroccan

ness training for wannabe Prabal Gurungs and, next year, will partner with Macy’s for a design incubator program (dcfashion foundation.org). “I think fashion startups see D.C. as a trial run before moving to New York or overseas,” says Bailey Sessoms, director of Friends of the D.C.F.F. “But if you’ve got a following here, I say you should do both.” Women’s custom-dress company Numari dips into multiple markets to produce its products. Founded in D.C. in July by Arti Anand and Komal Kushal Raj, the brand collaborates with designers in New York, Los Angeles and beyond to create bespoke women’s clothing, mainly work-ready frocks in solid and colorblock styles ($280-$350). You can customize their hues, hemlines and many other features. “D.C. is a market of professional women who appreciate fashion and have a distinct point of view,” Anand says. “I think they’re very excited about the custom concept.” That more and more fashionfocused companies are opting to stick around D.C. is a promising sign. While it’s unlikely we’ll ever be Paris or Milan, their existence suggests there’s an undeniable costume change in our midst. HOLLEY SIMMONS (E XPRESS)

A bowel movement

shouldn’t be painful

“My mom always told me I should invest whatever money I had in shoes and handbags. I took that pretty seriously.”

If you suffer painful bowel movements, local doctors need your help testing an investigational cream. It is relatively common for adults to experience severe pain during bowel movements when a tear, or fissure, occurs in the skin around the anus. If you’re an adult under 75 years old and this sounds a little too familiar, local doctors need your help with a research study testing an investigational cream for the pain associated with anal fissures. If qualified you will see a doctor and receive all study related care at no cost. Compensation may be available for time and travel. Call or join us on the web to see if this study is right for you.

Leandra Medine Leandra Medine has made a name for herself by wearing whatever strikes her fancy — no matter how outlandish. The irreverent voice behind The Man Repeller (manrepeller.com), her lighthearted fashion blog, is out with a new book, “Man Repeller: Seeking Love, Finding Overalls” ($25, Grand Central Publishing). She’ll be at W Hotel (515 15th St. NW) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday to celebrate.

What can fans of your blog expect from your new book? Writing a blog post is pretty pertinent. You can write about something that’s happening right in the moment, whereas when you’re writing a book, things can’t be as timely. They have to be a little bit more evergreen.

Can you explain your “man repelling” philosophy? A man repeller is a woman who dresses only for herself. She doesn’t want to impress anyone. It’s a matter of her feelings and being comfortable in her own skin.

What’s your reaction to people who may not understand or like the way you dress? I really don’t mind at all. I think that typically there’s always something constructive to be taken from criticism. How do you explain the effect of unappealing clothes looking good on someone? I think that there is some value in something being so far from trendy that, if you’re the type of person that likes challenging yourself, it’s an interesting and exciting experience.

Each chapter is organized by a single item of clothing you’ve worn or wanted to wear — socks, Bermuda shorts, a maxi skirt. Why? It was the easiest way to organize my thoughts. Looking at this long road ahead of you that is writing a book, it’s hard to actually start writing without considering the big mass ahead. So I sat down and started remembering things. Everything I was remembering was charged by the outfit I was wearing.

Your writing appeals to a broader audience than those who are interested in fashion. I don’t really think I’m talking about fashion when I’m talking about fashion. I’m discussing the human experience. That’s always been my MO. I went to school for journalism and I’m so fascinated by people and what the Internet is doing to my generation. All that stuff is imbedded in the fashion world. I’m using fashion as a vessel to convey what’s going on in my mind, but it’s not necessarily the actual subject matter. A lot of your readers look to your blog for advice on fashion and beyond. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? My mom always told me I should invest whatever money I had in shoes and handbags. I took that pretty seriously, because when you’re young, it’s really easy to improvise with meager means. Among the highlights: a 1980s Mondrianstyle dress, below.

NAME A WOMEN’S STORE PARK & MADISON, and

you might expect racks of Upper East Side-ish cardigans and “Royal Tenenbaums” furs. Instead, the new boutique in the Mosaic District (2905 District Ave., Fairfax; 703462-8665) seems angled at downtown girls, with Donni Charm’s shredded jersey scarves (on mannequin above, $100), denim by Joe’s Jeans, and Nicole Miller cocktail frocks (a black lace mini version is $400). Shoes are a strength, too, as in lace-up booties and sexy wedges. It’s all shown off in a loft-like space (rough-hewn floors, Marrakech-y wallpaper) that also seems anything but stuffy.

Manolo says, ayyy! To listen to the Congress peoples shouting about the government “shutdown,” it is as if the mega-major-super disaster had struck the nation, such as the tsunami, or the big earthquake, or the volcano had violently erupted in the courtyard of the Smithsonian, burying the entire Capitol Hill in hot lava. (Although, according to a recent poll, the Pompeiiization of Congress enjoys the hearty approval of 97 percent of the American peoples.) And this is why the Manolo is the monarchist, because the worst king is better than the best gaggle of politicians. Imagine how much more pleasant the U.S. would be if, instead of the incessant politicking, we could all relax, safe in the knowledge that our sovereign was, like Charles the II of England, primarily interested in hunting, wenching and amateur theatrics. No longer will we need to pay attention to our odious political class, always shouting for our attention and insulting our intelligence. Instead we will have the dignified pomp and circumstance of proper leadership. And, yes, the Manolo has the perfect candidate to be our first king: Jay Leno. He is tall, sufficiently genial and already possessed of the impressive Hapsburg chin. What more is needed? Here is the Loden from the 10 Crosby Derek Lam ($650, piperlime.gap .com), the boot that will be the perfect feetwear to usher in our new golden age. Long Live the King Jay the First! Ask the Manolo a question at manolo@shoeblogs.com. Visit the Manolo at shoeblogs.com.

“I don’t eat the stuff, but I feel like I should, out of respect and admiration for the engineering that went into it.” — COMMENTER KMMALEK AT NYTIMES .COM contemplates the “psycho-

biology” behind Taco Bell’s Doritos Locos tacos and, specifically, what makes them so craveable. Taco Bell sold 100 million of the tacos in the first 10 weeks they were released. Food scientists say that the fast-food cash cow combines optimum levels of mouthfeel, familiarity and memorability to trigger brain sensors that signal to eaters they want more.

“That averted gaze may be more powerful than that ‘persuasive’ stare.” — NANCY SHUTE AT NPR.ORG describes

the conclusions of researchers in Germany who found that eye contact may not always be a good thing, especially if a speaker is attempting to convince someone of something. The study found that speakers who looked off to the side actually tended to convince people of their arguments more often.

“Snapchat may not look much like Facebook, but with Stories, the company is taking its first steps toward competing with Facebook’s most important product: News Feed.” — ELLIS HAMBURGER AT THEVERGE .COM calls out a new online rival-

ry Thursday, the day after Snapchat — a messaging system that instantly deletes whatever its users send after it’s viewed by the recipient — announced a new addition to its popular smartphone app: Stories. Industry watchers compare the new addition to early versions of Facebook’s news feed.

“The only deductible in my plan is those pants. #ACAPickupLines” — BLOGGER MARIEFORMICA AT FAMOUSDC.COM introduces the

Internet to a new hashtag, which stands for Affordable Care Act Pickup Lines. Other gems: “You must have been dropped from your health insurance plan and straight into my dreams” and “Hey girl, my navigator says you’re the best plan for me.”

“If I know anything about anything (and, for the record, I do not), this will all go swimmingly until Dogfish Head unknowingly brews a batch that contains a microscopic amount of mysterious alien ooze.” — DANGER GUERRERO AT UPROXX.COM

fantasizes about what could go wrong with drinking beer made with the dust of lunar meteorites. Dogfish Head Brewery recently released “Celest-jewel-ale,” a small-batch brew made with moon dust that’s available while it lasts at Dogfish Head’s Rehoboth Beach, Del., brewpub.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You can learn a great deal from watching someone else at work. You’ll enjoy something of a revelation late in the day. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) The unanticipated will figure prominently throughout the day. Take care you haven’t hamstrung yourself with an unnecessary duty. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Review your past work with someone who can look at it with a fresh and objective eye. He or she will still be on your side. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) What begins or ends today is going to prove quite memorable. In some situations, you’ll want things to be old-fashioned. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’re able to get others to do precisely what you want, but this is not a skill that you’ll want to misuse or abuse.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You may be unusually charming, especially when you are dealing with an issue that could make some people uncomfortable. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You may receive permission, at long last, to do something you’ve long desired to do. Are you still primed and ready? TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Prospects are brightening at this time. You should be able to change someone’s mind and win support from another important someone.
