— JOHN MCCA IN, R-A RIZ., WARNING THAT

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s entry into the 2012 presidential race could dramatically reshape what has become a two-man race between Mitt Romney and Rick Perry. But Christie, who’s under pressure from party elders to run, hasn’t faced national scrutiny — and he could join other early favorites who burned out fast. The budget-cutting Christie is the latest heartthrob of Republicans who have been looking for a more exciting candidate than Romney. The former Massachusetts governor ran in 2008 and has long been considered the one to beat in the GOP, which has a history of nominating candidates who lost once before. Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, a favorite of fiscal conservatives, decided not to run. So did Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, long a part of the GOP establishment. Perry, the Texas governor, jumped in amid much fanfare only to sweat under the scrutiny his first national campaign brought. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann rallied restive conservatives long enough to win a key test vote in Iowa but quickly faded to the background. Christie said in January he wasn’t

Could Christie prevail in a race where other favorites have faded?

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie would face a time crunch if he decided to run for president.

F[hhoÊi FheXb[ci Chris Christie need look no further than Texas Gov. Rick Perry as a warning of the pitfalls of running for president. Perry shot to the top of polls after his announcement in mid-August. Yet, after a few shaky debate performances and many attacks from Mitt Romney, Perry has begun to fade. His weaknesses were on display this weekend in New Hampshire, where he held a series of town hall meetings and was asked repeatedly about a bill he signed that allows illegal immigrants to receive instate tuition at Texas universities. (AP)

“arrogant enough” to run for president in 2012. Now he is reconsidering in light of encouragement from GOP luminaries such as Henry Kissinger, Nancy Reagan and Barbara Bush. If he runs, Christie probably would be able to raise millions for a campaign, though his rivals have a huge head start. With about 100 days before the caucuses in Iowa, he’d face the tough task of setting up state campaign organizations swiftly, though he already has a team of advisers with national campaign experience. And as a Republican governor of a Democratic mid-Atlantic state, he could appeal to the donors and voters who like Romney’s business background but are looking for a more charismatic candidate. But he would also face a national spotlight that’s much harsher than that on the state or local stage. “The best thing to be is a potential candidate,” said Rich Galen, a longtime Republican strategist. “I don’t think anybody can stand up to that scrutiny without laying the groundwork for a long time before.” (AP)

Complex Path for Produce in U.S. Officials seek better tracing in response to listeria outbreak MWi^_d]jed The recent listeria outbreak from cantaloupe shows that large-scale occurrences of serious illnesses linked to tainted food have grown more common over the years, partly because much of what we eat takes a long and winding road from farm to fork. A cantaloupe grown on a Colorado field may make four or five stops before it reaches the dinner table. There’s the packing house

where it is cleaned and packaged, then the distributor who contracts with retailers to sell the melons in large quantities. A processor may cut or bag the fruit. The retail distribution center is where the melons are sent to stores. Then it’s stacked on display at the grocery store. Imported fruits and vegetables, almost two-thirds of the produce consumed in the U.S., have an even longer journey. “The food chain is very complex,” says Sherri McGarry of the Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Foods. “There are many steps, and the more steps there are, the harder it can be to link up each step to identify what the common

kets and locally grown produce. But many in the produce industry have come together to improve the ability to quickly trace food from field to plate. Erik Olson, director of food and consumer safety programs for the Pew Health Group, says it is critical that those improvements are made to prevent more, larger outbreaks as the system grows more complex. “Clearly, the food industry has just changed enormously in the last several decades,” he said. “It would be virtually impossible to sit down and eat a meal and eat food that hasn’t come from all over the world.” MARY CL ARE JALONICK (AP)

Just a few of the ways Wells Fargo is here forWashington, D.C.

Wells Fargo and Wachovia share a common legacy of local investment, and now that we’re one team, we’re able to create more economic growth and prosperity for the people we serve. In 2010, we invested $219 million in 19,000 nonprofits nationwide, surpassing $200 million for the third year in a row. That’s an average of $600,000 every single day to nonprofits supporting education, community development, human services, the arts, and the environment. Here in Washington, D.C., we are proud to support local nonprofit organizations like the D.C. College Access Program, Hope and a Home, Capital Area Food Bank, and the Greater Washington Urban League. Wells Fargo’s contribution to organizations like these is just one of the ways we’re with you in Washington, D.C., today and in the future.

NATO’s Mission in Libya Nearly Over, Official Says

China is vowing anew to punish people who post rumors on the Internet as the government tries to rein in forums that have become sources of debate and criticism. The State Internet Information Office said in a statement Friday that such rumors and hoaxes were “malignant tumors” that harm social stability. (AP)

The top U.S. commander for Africa said Saturday that the military mission in Libya was largely complete, even though ousted leader Moammar Gadhafi is still at large and fighting continues in Sirte and Bani Walid. A government warplane bombed an army position in southern Yemen, killing at least 30 soldiers involved in months of intense battles against al-Qaeda members, officials said Sunday. The strike appeared to be a mistake, but the soldiers hit were from a unit that had defected to side with protesters seeking the president’s ouster, raising questions about whether the bombing might have been intentional. Yemen’s government and the renegade military units both consider Yemen’s al-Qaeda branch an enemy. President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s political opponents, however, accuse him of allowing the Islamic militants to seize control of towns in southern Yemen earlier this year in a bid to spark fears in the West that without him in power, al-Qaeda would take over. Saturday evening in Abyan province, targeted an abandoned school used as a shelter by soldiers of the army’s 119th Brigade who were battling the al-Qaeda fighters, military and medical officials said. The brigade is thought to have received significant support from the U.S. military to enable it to fight the militants in the south. In recent days, fighting in the area has been heavy; 28 soldiers

and militants were killed there Saturday. Yemen’s turmoil is of deep concern to the United States and Europe in large part because of the possibility that Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula will benefit from it and carve out an even bigger haven in Yemen from which to plot attacks on the West. Yemen’s crisis began in February when protesters took to the streets to demand Saleh step down after 33 years in office. The government responded with a bloody crackdown that has included the use of pro-regime snipers to pick off unarmed demonstrators. (AP)

Syrian Opposition Creates Unified Council 8[_hkj Syrian dissidents formally established a broad-based national council Sunday designed to overthrow President Bashar Assad’s regime, which they accused of pushing the country to the brink of civil war. The announcement in Istanbul of the Syrian National Council appeared to be the most serious step yet to unify a deeply fragmented opposition. It follows five

days of battles between the Syrian military and army defectors in the country that raised the specter of all-out armed conflict. Prominent Syrian opposition figure Bourhan Ghalioun, who read out the founding statement of the SNC in Istanbul, accused the regime of fomenting sectarian strife in Syria to maintain its grip. The opposition movement has until now focused on peaceful demonstrations, though recently some

Va. officials concerned about funding for the rest of the rail project C[jhe The Metrorail extension through Tysons Corner has burned through more than 70 percent of its contingency fund. With two years of construction remaining, the jurisdictions paying for the line — and Dulles Toll Road drivers — could be on the hook for millions in possible cost overruns, transportation experts say. The project, the first phase of Metrorail’s extension to Dulles

International Airport and Loudoun County, began with $312.3 million allotted for unforeseen expenses two years ago. As of June, that fund had dwindled to $89.7 million. That shrinkage feeds doubts about whether managers will be able to finish the project on time and within budget. “That is certainly the goal, but there are challenges that remain,” said Patrick A. Nowakowski, the executive director of the Dulles rail project. If the project goes over budget, the partners — Fairfax and Loudoun counties, and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority — will have to make up a portion of

Airports authority board members said they are keeping a close watch on overall spending, which has totaled $1.4 billion so far. “It is something we’re paying close attention to,” said Robert Brown, who chairs the airports authority board’s finance committee. “We’re watching what gets used because we don’t want to be over budget.” Fairfax monitors the project on a weekly basis, County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova, a Democrat, said. “I’m not losing any sleep yet, but I’m certainly paying attention,” she said.

The council meets on the first Wednesday of each month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Metro headquarters, 600 Fifth St. NW in Washington, D.C. The positions are unpaid, and members can’t be employees or contractors who work for Metro, or elected officials. The vacancies:

Fairfax residents say county is doing little to help their homes 7b[nWdZh_W People in Fairfax County’s Huntington community who waded from their homes during last month’s devastating flash floods have had it up to their necks with something more than water. Every time Cameron Run floods their homes, government officials show up, tour the wreckage and promise remedies. New studies of the flooding are undertaken. Solutions such as levees, dredging and floodwalls are proposed. Yet, nothing gets done. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is again talking about building a $30 million levee and pumping station, although skep-

tical Huntington residents say it’s not much different from the berm that was first proposed at least as far back as 1977 — except that such solutions have only become more expensive. Now, after the second serious flood in five years, many in the

community have arrived at a crossroads, driven by desperation. Some want to move. Some want to stay and fight for a levee. Others are ready to embrace redevelopment, even if it means giving up on a 40-year-old zoning plan designed to preserve the diverse,

Four-Star Hotel Headed to SW Willard hotel group plans to build luxury facility on waterfront MWi^_d]jed The team behind the Willard InterContinental hotel — Carr Hospitality and InterContinental Hotels Group — plans to build a four-star, 268-room hotel as part of a massive overhaul of the District’s Southwest Waterfront. Carr is in final negotiations to purchase the site, near the intersection of 9th and Water streets SW, from the waterfront’s developers, PN Hoffman and Madison Marquette. Monty Hoffman, chief executive of District-based PN Hoffman, said Carr was selected among several candidates. “The thought process here is really to create a unique luxury hotel, one of its kind, and I believe the InterContinental brand fits the mold very well,” Hammad Shah, president and chief operating officer of Carr Hospitality said. Shah said the hotel would take advantage of the site’s location overlooking the Washington Channel. He said he expects the hotel to have a 5,000-square-foot rooftop lounge and two ballrooms looking out onto the water, as well as two restaurants. He expressed little hope that anything would change this time. “This is the slum as far as Fairfax is concerned,” said Livingston, a media consultant who put up footage of the flood on his blog. Livingston said he and his wife, Caitlin, 40, suffered about $50,000 worth of damage in the 2006 flood and at least $30,000 in damage last month, he said. They plan to move. D.C. to Remove $19 Cab Fare Limit This Week MWi^_d]jed Residents and visitors to the nation’s capital are about to pay more for some cab rides. WTOP-FM reports that the District of Columbia Taxicab Commission announced plans this week to remove the $19 cap on fares. That means the meter will keep running until the ride is over, no matter the length. The fare cap did not include surcharges for extra bags and passengers or a $1 gas surcharge, which is scheduled to remain in place through mid-November, officials said. (AP)

A Growing Movement Anti-Wall Street protesters see their numbers rise in New York and beyond

Demonstrators rally outside One Police Plaza in New York on Friday. What once was a group of college students has grown immensely entering the third week of protests.

JOHN MINCHILLO/AP

The protesters who have been camping out in Manhattan’s Financial District for more than two weeks eat donated food and keep their laptops running with a portable gas-powered generator. They have a newspaper — the Occupied Wall Street Journal — and a makeshift hospital. They lack a clear objective, though they speak against corporate greed, social inequality, global climate change and other concerns. But they’re growing in numbers, getting more organized and show no sign of quitting. City officials “thought we were going to leave, and we haven’t left,” 19-year-old protester Kira MoyerSims said. “We’re going to stay as long as we can.” Saturday’s arrests of more than 700 protesters who tried to cross the Brooklyn Bridge appeared to do little to dampen enthusiasm Sunday. The Occupy Wall Street demonstration started out last month with less than a dozen college students spending days and nights in Zuccotti Park, a private plaza off Broadway. It has grown sizably, however, both in New York City and elsewhere as people across the country, from Boston to Los Angeles, display their solidarity in similar protests. Moyer-Sims, of Portland, Ore., said the group has grown much more organized. “We have a protocol for most things,” she said, including getting legal help for people who are arrested. The protest has drawn protesters of diverse ages and occupations, including Jackie Fellner, a marketing manager from Westchester County, N.Y. “We’re not here to take down Wall Street. It’s not poor against

8WYaijeho The New York City protesters have spent most of their time in Zuccotti Park, sleeping on air mattresses, holding assemblies at which they discuss their goals and listening to speakers including celebrity activist Michael Moore and Princeton University professor Cornell West. On the past two Saturdays, though, they marched to other parts of the city, which led to tense standoffs with police. On Sept. 24, about 100 people were arrested, and the group put out video that showed some women being hit with pepper spray by a police official. On Oct. 1, more than 700 people were arrested as the group trekked to the Brooklyn Moore Bridge. Some of the protesters said they were lured onto the roadway by police, or they didn’t hear the calls from authorities to head to the pedestrian walkway. Police said no one was tricked into being arrested, and those in the back of the group who couldn’t hear were allowed to leave. (AP)

The Occupy Wall Street movement has inspired many other protests worldwide.

The BBC reported that a protest in Manchester, England, drew 35,000 people — a crowd far larger than the New York crowd. In Providence, R.I., a protest attracted about 60 people to a public park. The participants called it a “planning meeting.” In Boston, protesters set up an encampment across the street from the Federal Reserve building. Also on Saturday, other groups protested in Albuquerque, N.M., and Los Angeles to express solidarity with the New York movement. (AP)

rich. It’s about big money dictating which politicians get elected and what programs get funded,” she said. On Sunday, a group of New York public school teachers — including Denise Martinez, of Brooklyn — sat in the plaza. Martinez said most students at her school live at or below the poverty level, and her classes are jammed with up to about 50 students. “These are America’s future workers, and what’s trickling down to them are the problems — the unemployment, the crime,” she said. She blamed Wall Street for causing the country’s financial problems and said it needed to do more to solve them. VERENA DOBNIK (AP)

Redskins Pound Out an Ugly Win Torain stars while the defense stifles a late rally in St. Louis

C[Wdm^_b[ $$$ The Redskins were guaranteed to hold at least a share of the lead in the NFC East after Sunday’s early games. The Dallas Cowboys blew a 24-point lead to the upstart Detroit Lions — who improved to 4-0 with a 34-30 victory. It was the biggest lead Dallas (2-2) has lost in franchise history. Also on Sunday, Michael Vick had a big game, but the Philadelphia Eagles fell to 1-3 after they were stunned by the San Francisco 49ers, 24-23. (E XPRESS)

The Redskins roll into their bye week looking like NFC East contenders. Ryan Torain ran for 135 yards and a 20-yard score, and the defense stepped up to stop a late rally by winless St. Louis for a 17-10 victory Sunday. The Redskins (3-1) dominated on defense and got two of their seven sacks late by Stephen Bowen and Brian Orakpo to knock the Rams (0-4) out of scoring position. James Laurinaitis’ interception and 15-yard return of an underthrown pass from Rex Grossman had given St. Louis the ball at the Washington 19 with about five minutes remaining. Steven Jackson scored on a 15-yard reception earlier in the fourth quarter for the Rams, who trailed 17-0 after three quarters. St. Louis also has a bye next week. Washington is 3-1 for the first time since 2008. Orakpo had 2½ sacks, and Bowen added 1½ for the Redskins. Washington shut out its opponent in the first half for the first time since the opener last year against the Cowboys. Torain, who missed the first two games with a broken left hand and had no touches in Week 3, also had a 39-yard carry to set up a field goal in the third quarter. It’s his fourth

WORST ADJUSTMENT: The punt unit picked up two-straight penalties for hitting the return man. Maybe they don’t know the new rules.

career 100-yard game. The Rams have allowed 18 sacks on the year. Players were booed off the field at halftime for the secondstraight week. By the time they showed some signs of life, many fans had already hit the road. St. Louis was supposed to contend in the NFC West after a sixwin improvement last season to 7-9 but has regressed in Year 3 under coach Steve Spagnuolo, who is 8-28 overall. The Rams have been outscored 41-0 in the first half the last two games and 79-16 in the half overall. They didn’t top 100 yards total offense against the Redskins until the fourth quarter. Santana Moss scored on a 6-yard catch from Grossman, and Torain was untouched until a step from the goal line on his scoring run, only his second carry of the year. Justin King’s 50-yard interception return on a ball that went through Moss’ hands put the Rams at the Washington 31 and set up their first score. They settled for a field goal after rookie Lance Kendricks dropped a touchdown pass in the end zone. (AP)

Tigers Strike Back to Even Series vs. Yankees Delayed matchup of dueling aces takes on new importance Detroit closer Jose Valverde held off a furious New York ninth-inning rally and the Tigers avoided a major slipup, beating the Yankees 5-3 on a rainy Sunday and evening their best-of-five AL playoff series at one game each. The Yankees scored twice in the ninth and, helped when Detroit catcher Alex Avila lost his footing on the slick on-deck circle, got a chance to win it.

Miguel Cabrera is congratulated by Magglio Ordonez after hitting a homer Sunday.

Robinson Cano, who hit a grand slam and had six RBIs as the Yankees won the opener, came

up with two outs and runners on first and second. After wiping away raindrops from his hel-

met, Cano hit a routine groundball to end it. Tigers starter Max Scherzer pitched no-hit ball into the sixth inning. Game 3 is scheduled for Monday evening in Detroit. CC Sabathia is slated to start for the Yankees against Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander in a critical game of the now-even series. The two perennial All-Stars squared off in the opener Friday night at Yankee Stadium but the game was suspended after only 1½ innings because of rain, disappointing fans who were geared up for an entertaining pitchers’ duel. Broadway-Bound “Real Steel” marks Jackman’s return to the big screen after a two-year hiatus (with the exception of a cameo in “X-Men: First Class”). He’s slated to return to Broadway this fall in a one-man show called “Hugh Jackman: Back on Broadway,” slated for 10 weeks, starting Oct. 25. Afterward, he is set to star in the bigscreen adaptation of “Les Miserables” as Jean Valjean opposite fellow Aussie Russell Crowe (playing Javert). “It feels special to me,” he says. “If you’re going to do a movie musical, it helps to do one that is one of the most beloved of all time.” A.D.

robots actioner — though it has plenty of robot boxing action. “Movies like this are hard to find, because it’s one of the most difficult things to pull off: a movie that genuinely plays to both my mother-in-law and my 11-year-old son,” he says. Like most sports movies, “Real Steel” isn’t about winning, but about achieving one’s full potential. Jackman says audiences have responded to films like “Rocky” and “The Fighter” over the years because they often can relate to the underdog heroes in them. “As Sugar Ray says, ‘No champ ever came from Beverly Hills,’ so we instinctively know that boxing stories are going to be about people who have had it tough,” Jack ma n says. Casa Nonna’s (1250 Connecticut Ave. NW) new Aperitivo — an Italian term that sort of equates to “happy hour” — starts Tuesday. Every weekday between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the bar, you can get a limoncello cocktail for free, along with a quartino (about a glass and a half) of wine for $5 and free Italian snacks (some of the restaurant’s appetizers on a rotating menu). The kickoff boasts a special beer deal: Peronis are free between 5 and 6 p.m., and they cost $3 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Of all seasonal beers, the pumpkin ones that come out each fall are my favorite. It seems that every brewery has one, and while occasionally you run across one that tastes like a Yankee Candle smells, pumpkin beer is generally a solid fall beverage choice. Jack Rose (2007 18th St. NW) is skipping all that Teutonic Oktoberfest mumbo jumbo and going 8o <_edW straight to pumpkin PkXb_d heaven with Night of the Living Gourd on Tuesday at 5 p.m. This celebration of pumpkin beer offers 15 draft options, among them brews from Flying Dog, Schlafly, Dogfish Head and Smuttynose. Flying Dog’s contribution, the not-atall-disconcertingly-named the Fear, will make its D.C. debut in a pumpkin repurposed as a cask. The cover charge is $5, and there will be prizes for beer-themed costumes. My idea: Put a little dirt on your face and you’re in costume as “Smuttynose.” You’re welcome.

Dapper Dandy Theophilus London looks like he walked out of a GQ spread, his hat perfectly cocked, his glasses effortlessly hip. Critics vary on whether the rapper’s music holds up as well as his wardrobe. London tends to layer his own work over the greats (like Marvin Gaye’s “I Want You”), and some think he gets lost amid his source material. Marilyn Monroe was at her best playing calculating, funny, ditzy blondes. Before Hollywood figured that out, she was cast in 1952’s “Don’t Bother to Knock.” It’s her first starring role, as a mentally unstable baby sitter who loses it while on the job. M[ij Fkji ?j ed j^[ B_d[ <Wi^_ed Fashion’s most famous aficionado, Kanye West, turned pro on Saturday with a luxurious, hard-edged women’s collection that bucked all the stereotypes about celebrity designers. West has been a front-row fixture at fashion shows for years, but industry insiders had greeted news that the music star was planning to launch a line of his own with a hefty dose of skepticism and plenty of barbed quips about how it would surely be Lindsay Lohan's leggings line all over again. So, it was with slightly humbled wonder that the fashion editors, stylists and journalists hand-picked to attend Saturday’s late-night spring-summer 2012 show — held in a high school in southern Paris

8eea H[l_[m What exactly could a book titled “Zombies! Zombies! Zombies!” ($25, Vintage Crime/Black Lizard) be about? Cooking? Self-help? We kid, of course, but it’s worth noting that the Otto Penzler-edited anthology of zombie tales probably isn’t exactly what you’d expect. Those raised on zombie-apocalypse fare such as “Dawn of the Dead” and “28 Days Later” on big screens and “The Walking Dead” on small ones are used to seeing

Celebrities (R&B singer Ciara), designers (Joseph Altuzarra, Alexander Wang and Olivier Theyskens) and celebrity designers (the Olsen twins) turned out for West’s show, which was THE event on Paris’ spring-summer 2012 calendar. “It’s so cool to see someone come from our music world and do something like this,” Ciara said. “He did a great job.” (AP)

— greeted the sophisticated, highly designed looks on the catwalk. No, West didn’t reinvent the wheel: You could see the influence of established designers whose shows he has frequented over the years. There was a bit of Balmain in the short, sex-drenched dresses and some Givenchy in the gothic, bondage-y leather jackets and skirts, for example.

zombies portrayed as bloodthirsty reanimated corpses roaming Earth in search of a human snack. “Zombies! Zombies! Zombies!” presents a more nuanced portrayal. Not every zombie out there wants to eat your brains, kid. “I have attempted to maintain some balance in this collection and have omitted some pretty good stories that, in my view, slipped into an almost pornographic sensibility of the need to drench every page with buckets of blood and descriptions of mindless cruelty, torture, and violence,” writes Penzler, who is considered

to be an authority on crime, mystery and other genre fiction. Penzler has selected 800 pages of zombie-themed short stories, but most of them are high on drama, tension and a feeling of the macabre, and low on blood and guts. Stories by Edgar Allan Poe, W.B. Seabrook and H.P. Lovecraft are guaranteed to provide the reader with a different prism through which to view zombies. And for those eager for a more traditional view, look no further than Stephen King’s yarn “Home Delivery,” a more humorous than terrifying tale of the dead rising from their graves on a remote Maine island. As Penzler writes: “You will find in these pages some stories that you’ve never read by authors of whom you’ve never heard, and you are in for a treat.” Agreed. You might say it’s a nobrainer. (AP)

collected himself. “That’s the biggest hurdle when you want to get amazing people to work for you.” Another challenge, he added, was figuring out who to work with. The fashion industry is often inscrutable for outsiders, even ones as well connected as West. U.S. designer Jeremy Scott sang West’s praises. “Everyone probably thought it was going to be another like Jennifer Lopez’s Macy’s line, and it’s not,” Scott said. “Kanye has impeccable taste, and you see his taste level is up there.” (AP)

“Sure, it would have been nice for her to have had more screen time with [Kristen] Wiig (the two have such great comedic chemistry together), but [Melissa] McCarthy, who earned a standing ovation from the audience, was the fresh of breath air that she’s been all year. All in all, a brilliant and daring debut for an ‘SNL’ newbie.”

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You can do something that others have not been able to do — though they boast a great deal more experience and so-called expertise. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) What begins as a casual affair is likely to become something in which you will take great pride as you display to others a real talent. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You’ll have a great many choices put before you today, but you are likely to decide on that which is traditional and most familiar. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You mustn’t be too quick to judge someone who is doing something you would never consider doing, for you are not in his or her shoes. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) There is much to be said for experience, and today you can prove that you have what it takes.

Friday’s Solution

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You’ll want to take more care than usual in organizing and cleaning around the home. Much depends on your ability to avoid complications.

<EKH H79A JEJ7B Make a 2-7 letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. 7-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) While others would swiftly resort to that which is most familiar, you’re likely to choose that which brings you the most excitement. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You may decide to put yourself in the line of fire today because there is no other way to get the job done. It’s not your first choice.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You may want from someone what he or she is unwilling to give — at least for now. Be patient — and by all means, be yourself.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You may not know where to focus your attention, as the choices available to you are all compelling. The most viable option will reveal itself. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You’re in no mood to limit yourself today — especially when it comes to one of your favorite activities. Too much of a good thing? No way. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may be able to reach a goal today by approaching it from a different direction. Altering your course midway can also yield results.
