A red-headed Scottish man says he’s saved more than $300 at places like restaurants and movie theaters by using a “ginger discount card” friends gave to him as a joke, the Daily Mirror reported. Richard Macrae, 30, says most people who give him discounts are in on the joke, but he was kicked out of one bar for trying to use it because the bartender figured he must have been drunk to try to pull a stunt like that. ILLEGAL DELICACIES

Police are scratching their heads trying to work out who donated a human skull to a thrift store in Austin, Texas. Homicide Detective Derek Israel said Wednesday that foul play is not suspected and that he just wants to know how the adult skull came to be left at the Goodwill store. Goodwill store staff discovered the skull while sifting through donations on July 16. A spokeswoman says it could have been gifted up to a week prior to its discovery. (AP)

Driving the Diamond

It doesn’t matter how much time you’ve spent stuck in your car in the District. You’ve probably never covered the full 48 miles of the “Driving the Diamond” car tour. New York-based artist Lize Mogel developed it as part of a map with several tours for “Sight Lines,” a project commissioned by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. (Download the map at sightlinesdc.com.) She says you’ll need three hours and a good road trip soundtrack.

2

WAGBRAD

Capitol Hill bike blogger David Cranor devised WAGBRAD (Washcycle’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Around D.C.), a 50-mile route along trails and roads. The six-hour journey is tough, especially hilly Southern Avenue. But Cranor organized groups to do it four times. After the 2011 ride — and the birth of Cranor’s kids — the event was put on hiatus. He wants to resurrect it eventually; for now, you can use his map (bikely.com/ maps/bike-path/Around-DC).

Boundary stones

The first folks to work their way around D.C. were the surveyors who mapped out the nation’s new capital in 1791. Arlingtonian Stephen Powers retraces their steps every May by driving (and then hiking) to each of the boundary stones that were placed about a mile apart along the route — a trip that can take up to seven hours. Powers’ book on the stones comes out next spring. His site boundarystones.org has tips on how you can do it, too.

Fannie Mae is selling its headquarters so as to consolidate its D.C. offices, the financial services organization said Thursday. In the 1970s, thenFannie Mae president Oakley Hunter acquired the Colonial-style building (his CFO dubbed it “Versailles West”) on Wisconsin Avenue, The Wall Street Journal reported. While nearly all new buildings seem to be luxury studios, we hope the new owners put it to more creative use. Some options:

CLOSING

The Fannie Mae building could use a hug, too The Corcoran Gallery of Art and College of Art + Design is officially no more; its drawn-out split was finalized last week. Before the National Gallery of Art closes the museum for renovations, fans plan to join hands and give the building a big group hug. According to the Facebook page “Farewell Hug to Corcoran,” the hug will form between 2:30 and 3 p.m. on Saturday. In addition to the embrace, “ceremonial goodbye rituals” and eulogies, huggers will share their Corcoran memories. R.S.

Police make arrest in case of man found dead in bags

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray plans return trip to China

Former Ward 1 D.C. City Council candidate Jeff Smith was sentenced to 60 days in jail Thursday for accepting more than $140,000 in donations and making false and misleading reports to the city’s campaign finance office. Prosecutors say Smith was aided by D.C. businessman Jeffrey Thompson. In March, Thompson pleaded guilty in federal court to funding a “shadow” campaign to help Mayor Vincent Gray win the 2010 mayoral election by pumping more than $660,000 in donations into the campaign. As part of his cooperation, Thompson implicated Smith. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Prince George’s County police have arrested a Laurel, Md., man in connection with the death of 28-year-old Jacinto Perez, who was found dismembered in bags at an apartment complex last weekend, authorities said. Police announced Thursday they have arrested 32-year-old Santos Leonel Mejia-Yanes, who was a roommate of Perez’s. Police were called on Sunday after someone reported finding body parts in a bag, authorities said. Police later discovered more bags in the area and identified Perez as the victim through fingerprints. Investigators are searching for the third roommate. (TWP)

As Mayor Vincent Gray closes out his term, he will seek a reprise of one of the high points of his tenure — a trade-oriented mission to China — his office said Thursday. Gray visited China in June 2012, where he opened a “D.C. China Center” in Shanghai and helped to close a deal that pumped tens of millions of dollars into a long-stalled project in Shaw. Gray’s new trip will include the opening of a second D.C. China Center, in Beijing, and a celebration of the 30th anniversary of D.C.’s sister-city agreement with the city. He will be in China at the same time as Prince George’s County, Md., Executive Rushern Baker III. (TWP)

Obama: No strategy yet for fighting Islamic State President Barack Obama said Thursday he has not decided on stepped-up military action against the Islamic State in Iraq or Syria. “We don’t have a strategy yet,” Obama said during a White House news conference, referring to increased military action. Obama said he has consulted congressional leaders and will continue to do so as his administration considers its next steps. (THE WASHINGTON POST) LAHORE, PAKISTAN

Pakistan PM charged over protest killings Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif faces murder conspiracy charges in a case filed Thursday by supporters of a cleric who has been leading a massive anti-government protest in the capital Islamabad for the past two weeks. Tahir-ul-Qadri has called for Sharif to step down and face trial over the killing of 14 of the cleric’s supporters in clashes with the police in the eastern city of Lahore in June. The prime minister enjoys immunity as long as he remains in office. (AP)

Islamic State captives were waterboarded SYRIA At least four hostages held in Syria by the Islamic State, including American journalist James Foley, who was recently executed by the group, were waterboarded in the early part of their captivity, according to people familiar with the treatment of the kidnapped Westerners. Islamic State militants appeared to model the technique on the CIA’s use of waterboarding to interrogate suspected terrorists after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The victims of waterboarding are often strapped down on

gurneys or benches while cold water is poured over a cloth covering their faces; they feel they are drowning. President Barack Obama has condemned waterboarding as torture. “They knew exactly how it was done,” said a person with direct knowledge of what happened to the hostages. James Foley was beheaded by the Islamic State last week in apparent retaliation for U.S. airstrikes in Iraq where the militant group has seized large swaths of territory. The group, which also controls parts of Syria, is holding

at least three other Americans. Also on Thursday, the Islamic State group posted photos revealing they had killed more than 160 Syrian government troops seized in recent fighting, the Associated Press reported. The photos showed terrified young conscripts stripped down to their underwear before meeting their deaths. Most of the dozens killed over the past 24 hours were rounded up Wednesday near the Tabqa air base, three days after Islamic State fighters seized the base. Federal lawsuit claims police brutality in Ferguson

There’s a barren lake bed in the Death Valley National Park in California defined by its many long serpentine tracks, etched into the landscape by massive stones that move somewhat miraculously across the mud. It’s called Racetrack Playa — and for decades geologists have been chasing the “sailing stones” at play there. Scientists think they’ve solved the mystery. The stones move when there’s a small rainfall that freezes overnight. When the sun melts the ice the next day, and a wind catches the stones, that’s when they move, according to a study in online science journal PLOS ONE. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A federal lawsuit alleges that Missouri police in Ferguson and St. Louis County used excessive force and falsely arrested innocent bystanders amid attempts to quell widespread unrest after the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown. The five plaintiffs in the suit filed Thursday include a clinical social worker who says she and her 17-year-old son were roughed up and arrested after not evacuating a McDonald’s quickly enough. A 23-year-old man says he was shot multiple times with rubber bullets and called racial slurs while walking through the protest zone to his mother’s home. The lawsuit seeks $40 million in damages. An electric key to improving memory? Researchers have found that a person’s memory can be improved by stimulating areas deep inside the brain with electrical current, a finding that offers hope for treating Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, traumatic brain injury or aging. FREDRICK KUNKLE (TWP)

Preparation: The team from Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine first mapped 16 people’s brains using an MRI scanner to identify the networks and pathways involved in memory, which can differ slightly in different people. How it was done: After establishing their performance on memory tests, the subjects brains’ were stimulated through powerful magnetic impulses known as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. How much was done: Subjects received 20 minutes of brain stimulation per day over five consecutive days. Twentyfour hours after their last session of brain stimulation, they took the memory tests again, and then again a week later with a fake, placebo brain stimulation. The results: Healthy adults, ages 21 to 40, performed better on memory tests after receiving the electromagnetic stimulation to their brains. The conclusion: Researchers say the study is one of the first to show long-term improvement in memory by driving an electrical current deep into the brain.

Immigrants rights activists held a rally on Thursday outside the White House. U.S. Park Police say 145 demonstrators were arrested for blocking a sidewalk.

The immigration ‘trap’ Obama’s forthcoming decision has both parties worried about the 2014 midterms WASHINGTON Both political parties are in a state of high anxiety about the possibility that President Barack Obama will allow millions of illegal immigrants to remain in the country, fearing that White House action on the issue could change the course of November’s midterm elections. In the past few days, Democratic candidates in nearly every closely fought Senate race have criticized the idea of aggressive action by Obama. Some strategists say privately that it would signal that he has written off the Democrats’ prospects for retaining control of the chamber, deciding to focus on securing his legacy instead. Meanwhile, Republicans have their own worries about a “September surprise” on immigration. They know their volatile party’s tendency to erupt at such moments — with government shutdowns and impeachment threats.

Turkey’s Erdogan sworn in as president

Any move toward impeachment hearings against Obama or another government shutdown would cause serious problems for Republicans in key Senate races, where they must appeal to independents who already are suspicious about the party’s ability to govern. Obama announced in June that he was looking at “additional actions my administration can take on our own, within my existing legal authorities, to do what Congress refuses to do and fix as much of our immigration system as we can.” The possibilities include not only deferring deportation for millions of illegal immigrants but also providing new green cards for high-tech workers and for the relatives of U.S. citizens and permanent residents, officials say. A decision is expected in coming weeks. One senior administration official said the White House is

Egypt’s Morsi accused of leaking classified secrets to Qatar

Legal maneuvering President Barack Obama knows whatever executive actions he takes on immigration will face intense opposition. So as a self-imposed, end-of-summer deadline to act approaches, Obama’s lawyers are carefully crafting a legal rationale they believe will withstand scrutiny and survive any court challenges, administration officials say. But Republicans, too, are exploring their legal options for stopping what they’ve deemed egregious presidential overreaching. (AP)

balancing various concerns in its deliberations, including the legal limits on the president’s authority, the ongoing child migrant crisis along the Rio Grande River, the communications challenge of explaining the new policy, the impact it is likely to have on Capitol Hill and the implications of acting in the heat of a campaign. The White House also is feeling pressure from Hispanic groups and other advocates of immigration liberalization, who

are weary of being told that they must be patient. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., said Obama “is going to determine his legacy with the immigrant community in the next 30 days.” A dramatic move may produce long-term political benefits with the nation’s fast-growing Latino electorate. But many of the crucial Senate battles this year are being fought in conservative states with small Latino populations where Obama is unpopular. Democratic candidates in those states have little appetite for yet another policy battle. Republicans on Capitol Hill and outside conservative leaders see an opportunity — but also an opening for the GOP to stumble at a time when the political tide seems to be running in their favor. “A cynic would say this is a trap carefully laid by the White House,” said Vin Weber, a wellconnected Republican former congressman from Minnesota. NATO RELEASES PHOTOS: NATO released satellite photos Thursday that appeared to show Russian vehicles and troops in numerous locations in and around eastern Ukraine. NATO said at least 1,000 Russian troops are in Ukraine.

Developments in the fight against Ebola The Ebola virus sweeping through West Africa has mutated repeatedly during the current outbreak, a fact that could hinder diagnosis and treatment of the devastating disease, according to scientists. The findings, based on genomes from 78 patients taken beginning in the early days of the outbreak, were published Thursday in the journal Science. Five of the paper’s more than 50 co-authors died from Ebola before publication.

UKRAINE Ukraine accused Russia on Thursday of entering its territory with tanks, artillery and troops — a show of military force that the United States now considers an invasion in all but name. Western powers said Moscow had “outright lied” about its role and escalated the conflict. Russia dismissed the allegations, describing the fighters there as “Russian volunteers.” The Kremlin has repeatedly denied arming and supporting the separatists who have been fighting Ukrainian troops for four months in the gravest crisis between Russia and the West since the end of the Cold War. Two columns of tanks and other equipment entered southeastern Ukraine at midday, following heavy shelling of the area from inside Russia that

Lysenko said the missiles from Russia were fired at Ukrainian positions in the southeast about 11 a.m. and an hour and a half later, two columns, including tanks and other vehicles, began an attack. They entered Ukraine from the Rostov region of Russia. “Russian forces have entered Ukraine,” President Petro Poroshenko said in Kiev, canceling a foreign trip and calling an emergency meeting of his security council. He urged Ukrainians to remain calm. At an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting, Western representatives expressed outrage. Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin offered a spirited defense, saying Kiev “is waging

war against its own people.” He did not deny the Russian presence, saying “there are Russian volunteers in eastern parts of Ukraine. No one is hiding that.” U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power countered: “A Russian soldier who chooses to fight in Ukraine on summer break is still a Russian soldier.” Churkin noted the presence of Western advisers, asking where

Ukrainian troops were getting weapons. He said he wanted to “send a message to Washington: Stop interfering in the internal affairs of sovereign states.” In Mariupol, a city of 450,000 people about 20 miles west of Novoazovsk, a brigade of Ukrainian forces arrived at the airport Wednesday. National Guard spokesman Ruslan Muzychuk said that the government has evidence that large amounts of weapons have been brought into Novoazovsk from across the Russian border. Associated Press journalists on the border have seen the rebels with a range of unmarked military equipment and have encountered many Russians among the rebel fighters. This was considered one of the most attractive examples of a boundary stone until a car drove over it in 2008, Stephen Powers says. The cage was destroyed and the stone was knocked off its base. For years, it sat in an office. But this summer, SE6 came back — with a newly restored cage, too.

who know how to deal with stone,” says Vega, who cringes at “fixes” made by well-meaning members of the public. The process proved more challenging than expected: The first day the preservationists were on the job, thieves stole their equipment. And some residents have trouble accepting that part of their yard belongs to the government.

The city has help from the Daughters of the American Revolution, who have considered themselves custodians of the stones since installing protective cages around them in 1915. DAR dug up their original blueprints, and hired a welder to accurately replace any broken bits. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year. VICKY HALLETT (EXPRESS)

It’s tough to visit this stone. Gabriela Vega says the preservation team must wait until after the nearby poison ivy dies to reach the out-of-the-way location. On boundarystones.org, the hiking directions include this line: “If you are on a small sandy beach with car tires and debris, you are in the right place.”

Powers fondly recalls hiking through the woods down a litter-covered trail to visit this stone. It stood beside a shack, where a hermit lived. “He was a bicycle repairman, with a 20-foot pile of bike parts,” Powers says. Ever since a fire destroyed the building a few years ago, the stone has remained alone.

The boundary stones of Washington — the 40 surveying markers placed around the city’s border in 1791-92 — were bound to have an identity crisis. Each bears the inscription “Jurisdiction of the United States” on one side, and either “Virginia” or “Maryland” on the other. So as interest grew over the past decade in a preservation effort, people first had to figure out who owns the things, explains Stephen Powers, who runs boundarystones.org. The answer, as the Internet likes to say, may surprise you. Those that sit on the D.C./Maryland line were deemed the property of the D.C. Department of Transportation. “But on the Virginia side, if you own the land, you own the stone,” Powers says. Efforts to convince this mishmash of stakeholders to agree to a single rehabilitation plan were a bust, so D.C. is tackling just its stones, says DDOT transportation planner Gabriela Vega. Work started this spring with the help of the city’s Historic Preservation Office and experts from the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Training Center. “There are very few people

6 Just past the Southern Avenue Metro, we find a winner in our saddest piece of debris contest. It’s an ancient bike with a faded “Happy Birthday” streamer tied to the handlebars. The front tire is missing. Yet, it’s still chained by the side of the road, like some loving owner will come pick it up any minute.

5 We cut up Branch Avenue into the neighborhood, right past Mayor Vincent Gray’s house. Nice digs! Wonder if he ever shops at the nearby Da What’s Happening Connection. The store on Naylor Road promises prepaid phones, go-go CDs and oils.

4 The open gate to the Jewish Chesed Shel Emes cemetery (near the intersection of Southern Avenue and E Street) is inviting, and so is the helpful gravedigger standing there. “This is the Hebrew Free Burial Society,” he explains, as he points out the different sections around him. “People on that side got money, people on this side don’t. If you stick around, we’ll put someone in the ground today.” We pass.

Every group house in the D.C. area has its own unique dynamic — often not-soscientifically referred to as a “vibe.” And once your group house finds the right mix of people for that vibe, which can take years, you’ll want to keep it that way. Here are a few tips for pitching your group house in a way that will appeal to the right renter.

Group house hunt

Ready, set, lease quickly

Group houses are often referred to as “intentional communities” for a reason: Finding the right fit isn’t always easy.

Continued from page R1

up a specific ad,” she says. If something is a big deal in your house — like vegetarianism or green living — be upfront about it, she says. But beware of being too proscriptive. “If it has too many requirements or too much information, I think people get frightened off,” she says. In her ad, for instance, she avoids words like “strict” when referring to her vegan lifestyle.

Finding a short-term rental in D.C. can be easy if you have an employer who will cover the expense and who is aware of the going rates. But if that’s not your situation — if, say, you’re hired on a temporary contract or for an internship, relocating to find a job or looking for a place until you can buy a home — finding a temporary pad can be frustrating. Here are tips to find a short-term lease that’s in your budget.

nextweek

Advertise creatively Advertising in clever ways also might help find the right fit. At Lamont Street Collective, they’ve advertised openings on Facebook and Twitter, or even at public art “salons” they throw at the house, where they hang fliers with QR codes to the online application. “We utilize every channel possible,” says housemate Marzena Zukowska, 24, who works at a nonprofit in D.C. Bla n ke spoor a lso adver t ise s rooms on an “intentional communities” website (ic.org), and — because the house also includes artists’ studio space — on DC Space Finder (dcspacefinder.org), a site for finding arts venues and facilities.

Allow plenty of time When a room is opening up, give yourselves plenty of time to find a replacement, says Campbell, who started advertising in April for a room that was opening up in August. When you rush, “there’s a tendency to freak out and make the wrong decision,” she says. “Give yourself enough time to be choosy.” Consider what you’ll do if you don’t

TEDDYWOLFF (FOR EXPRESS)

Sometimes you need to rent more than an apartment. Learn the ins and outs of renting furniture in next week’s issue of Ready to Rent.

Jill Blankespoor, 38, who lives at and manages a six-bedroom, visual arts-focused group house in Petworth known as “Thug Mansion,” is also specific in her ads, and expects specifics about the prospective tenant and what kind of art they do, in response. “If they’re one-line responses, I won’t respond at all,” Blankespoor says. “Leave a paragraph about yourself and what you’re looking for.” At Lamont Street Collective, a group house in Mt. Pleasant with a culture of art and social activism, their posts highlight their mission of community investment.

ready to rent | R3

What’s your group house personality? The silent type: Your idea of a house meeting is a group text thread. Party animal: Your feet stick to the kitchen floor when you walk — and you like it that way. Arty: You firmly believe that every wall needs a mural and every room an installation piece. Green: Solar panels. On. Everything. Bookish: Your “entertainment center” is the bookshelf. Generically “chill”: You clean up after yourself and drink a socially acceptable amount of alcohol. E.B.

Perfect pitch Here are excerpts from ads the group houses we spoke to posted as they hunted for the right renters.

Veg-friendly: “We are locals and friends who love things like wine, funny tv, going to shows, DC, UMD, outdoor sports and generally just working hard and having fun. Vegans and vegetarians are encouraged to apply! We are mostly veg/vegan animal lovers and would love if we found some like-minded, conscious living roomies :).” Arts house: “Thug mansion is a visual arts collective that offers share studio space and supplies toemergingartists who work in all forms ofwet and dry media, screenprinting, mosaics, handbuildingand found sculpture. … The house is dedicatedto making live/work studio space affordable, cooperative, and sustainable for emergingartists.” Community-focused: “We are looking for someone who is interested in art, activism, and community work. We host a good amount of events, so we want someone who is really interested in helping with this. We also want a person who will commit to being a part of the collective living process and help make the [Lamont Street Collective] a better place to live.” E.B.

find the right fit immediately. At Thug Mansion, where rooms rent for $400 to $500, if they don’t find a good fit in time, they’ll rent out a room for the month through Airbnb (airbnb.com) or leave it vacant, Blankespoor says. When Campbell posts an ad online, she gets anywhere from 10 to 30 replies but only one in 10 people might pique

“There’s a tendency to freak out and make the wrong decision. Give yourself enough time to be choosy.” — LIL AVAT I CA MPBELL , WHO LIVES IN A GROUP HOUSE, SAYS TO ALLOW PLENT Y OF TIME TO FIND REPLACEMENT RENTERS

her interest. She renews the ad a few times to give herself options, though she tries not to keep people waiting more than a few days or a week tops. Campbell and Blankespoor say they usually do one or two rounds of interviews. At Lamont Street Collective, applicants fill out an online application before the in-person interviews. Ultimately, though, “when you meet someone, just trust your gut,” Campbell says. ERIN BYL ANDER (FOR E XPRES S)

Check with the pros. Short-term housing providers may have options that are farther from the city’s center, which are typically cheaper. Adjust your lease term. A lease of three months or a little more in some cases might help you get a better rate. Some costs often covered in short-term rentals include utilities that are already set up and included in the rent.

Rent an apartment and rent furniture. Not all apartment rental properties will do short-term leases, and many of those that do will charge a premium. Ask what lease term will give you the best rent. Then, fill it. Many furniture rental companies have basic packages and allow you to add what you need. But sometimes, it might be best to purchase a set of flatware, dishes, linens and a coffee pot, rather than rent housewares. Rent a furnished apartment from a private landlord. These types of rentals are harder to find and will take more legwork, but they are often a convenient option. Make sure you can afford any extra expenses (such as utilities, Internet, cable and phone) outside the rent. Nancy Simmons Starrs is president and founder ofApartment Detectives, a D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia apartment search service. Starrs writes an occasional column on rental issues for The Washington Post’s Where We Live blog.

Heisman long shots

COLLEGE FOOTBALL | 2014 SEASON PREVIEW

Choosing favorites

With a returning Heisman Trophy winner leading the defending national champs and this season being the first year of the College Football Playoff, there’s no shortage of storylines as the 2014 season gets underway for most teams this weekend. Here are four schools that enter this season as favorites to earn a spot in that four-team playoff. (E XPRES S/ THE WASHINGTON POST ) Florida State Seminoles

Alabama Crimson Tide

Michigan State Spartans

Oregon Ducks

The Seminoles will have an idea where they stand after their fourth-week matchup against the Clemson Tigers in Tallahassee, Fla. Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston, likely the focus of 12 weeks of aggressive game planning by opponents, is the nation’s best athlete — but he’ll need to remain focused to avoid late-season surprises against Notre Dame, Louisville, Miami and Florida.

The key to any successful run through the SEC is the right schedule, and the Crimson Tide’s is among the conference’s easiest. Its Eastern Division tie-ins are Florida and Tennessee, both unproven teams, and coach Nick Saban’s group has open dates before road games against Mississippi and LSU. It doesn’t hurt to have Auburn visiting on the final Saturday of the regular season, where fans will be craving revenge.

The Spartans’ chances of cruising through the Big Ten schedule became much easier when Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. But the conference outlook, which includes a home game against Michigan, isn’t the issue. That Week 2 contest at Oregon is a major test for quarterback Connor Cook and Co. that will propel the winner into earlyseason playoff conversations.

Strength of schedule will be a major point of emphasis for the new playoff committee, and even a one-loss Oregon team would be an obvious choice for a slot after running the Pac-12 gauntlet. Oregon and quarterback Marcus Mariota, now healthy and the top Heisman front-runner not named Winston, will host Michigan State in Week 2, the first of four opponents ranked in the preseason top 25.

Here are three players who aren’t high on many Heisman Trophy watchlists, but could find their way into the Heisman picture by the end of this college football season. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

3 Hutson Mason Georgia QB

He got a little playing time last year when Aaron Murray went down and the senior has plenty of talent around him on offense.

2 Taysom Hill BYU QB

Last year, the duel-threat QB threw for nearly 3,000 yards and rushed for 1,344 yards. An easy schedule could help pad his numbers.

1 Thomas Tyner Oregon RB

The Ducks QB gets all the Heisman buzz, but the sophomore running back, below, should have a big role in this high-powered offense.

ACC

New faces under center

The strength of the ACC as a whole in 2014 could depend on the arms of numerous unproven commodities at quarterback — besides Jameis Winston, Florida State’s Heisman winner, of course. According to STATS, only nine current ACC QBs have made at least one career start — and three of them made those starts at other schools. Only one ACC QB — Duke’s Anthony Boone, left — ever started a game for his current school before last season. And no one in the league has made more career starts than Winston (14 as a redshirt freshman in 2013). (AP) AP source: Browns WR Josh Gordon wants to play in CFL but rules say he can’t

COLLEGE FOOTBALL As a sixth-year senior, Maryland quarterback C.J. Brown has accumulated invaluable experience on the football field and a wealth of knowledge in the classroom. The tradeoff is that the 23-yearold feels his age when surrounded by dozens of teammates not far removed from high school. “Every day I come off the practice field I definitely feel like the old guy,” Brown said. “Getting in the ice tub, trying to take care of the body. The freshmen, they run, run, run, then go shower and get out.” Brown arrived at Maryland in 2009 after being recruited by coach Ralph Friedgen to play in the ACC. He will finish his college career playing for Randy Edsall against Big Ten competition. “What does everyone say? Stay in college as long as you can,” Brown said with a wry grin. His final year will begin Saturday in a home game against James Madison. Brown received a redshirt in his first year at Maryland and played in one game the following year before sustaining a seasonending shoulder injury. He played in 10 games in 2011, started five and finished with a teamhigh five touchdown runs and a 7.27 yards per carry average. He missed the 2012 season after

tearing his ACL in preseason practice, but bounced back last year to become the first quarterback in school history to throw for at least 2,000 yards and run for 500 yards in a single season. Brown has run for 1,162 yards and passed for 3,084 yards. But his lengthy stay at Maryland will not be defined solely by what he accomplished on the field. Brown long ago earned an undergraduate degree in communications and this year expects to receive a master’s degree in business and management. “I’m going to get two degrees

NFL changes its domestic violence policy NFL players will be subject to a six-week suspension for a first domestic violence offense and banishment from the league for a second offense under a new policy outlined by Commissioner Roger Goodell. HOWARD FENDRICH (AP) Did Goodell admit Rice’s ruling was too short? In a letter and memo sent to all 32 team owners Thursday, and obtained by the Associated Press, Goodell says he “didn’t get it right” in giving Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice a two-game suspension for allegedly hitting the woman who is now his wife.

Stewart to end hiatus Sunday Tony Stewart will return to Sprint Cup competition Sunday night at Atlanta Motor Speedway, ending a three-race hiatus after his car struck and killed a fellow driver during a dirt-track race. The three-time NASCAR champion has not raced since Aug. 9, when he hit Kevin Ward Jr. at a sprint car event in upstate New York. Stewart hastily pulled out of the NASCAR race at Watkins Glen the next morning, then skipped races at Michigan and Bristol Motor Speedway. Stewart has been in seclusion since Ward’s death. He returns to his No. 14 Chevrolet at Atlanta ranked 26th in the Sprint Cup standings. JENNA FRYER (AP)

First offense An initial offense of this sort will draw a six-week ban without pay, although the memo says “more severe discipline will be imposed if there are aggravating circumstances such as the presence or use of a weapon, choking, repeated striking, or when the act is committed against a pregnant woman or in the presence of a child.”

Second offense In the case of a suspension for a second offense, a player “may petition for reinstatement after one year but there is no assurance [it] will be granted.”

First-year Nationals manager Matt Williams has Washington in first place in the NL East with 30 games to play.

Nats clearly embrace Williams’ philosophy NATIONALS Back when he was a player, Matt Williams was meticulous in his approach to baseball, always seeking answers for every possible in-game scenario. Throughout his first season as the Nationals’ manager, he’s expected his players to aspire to the same mindset. It’s worked well in year one. Williams’ influence can be seen everywhere: The Nationals, despite their recent three-game skid, are one of the hottest teams in baseball with the postseason just a month away, winning 14 of their past 20 games. Williams, often described as a bulldog, believes in being aggressive and applying pressure.

16

That’s led to slight increases per game in stolen bases, hits and RBIs this year. “It’s part of our DNA,” Williams said. “We established that in spring training. It’s part of the way we’ll have to play if we’re going to be successful. It doesn’t mean we’re going to run wild but we try to pick opportunities that are given to us.” Williams learned some of his managerial strategies as a player in Arizona when Buck Showalter was the manager from 1998 to 2000. When the Nationals and the Orioles, Showalter’s current team, faced off earlier this year, Showalter recalled Williams’ attentiveness as a player.

“Matt was a watcher and a listener,” Showalter said. “He could stump the managers as good as anybody [with questions].” Having played for 17 seasons, Williams understands the highs and lows that come with the game. He’s not too tough on his players when things go wrong, though he’s not lenient, and he gives his guys the freedom to play within their strengths. “My job is to understand that regardless what happens today we have another one tomorrow,” Williams said. “We have to be prepared for that. The fact we allow them to take ownership about the way they go about it is important.” JASON BUTT (FOR EXPRESS)

Weakened U.S. team still aims for title

Redskins outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan had 8½ sacks last season — second-most on the team.

Pressure on the outside to turn around defense Kerrigan and Orakpo have flourished during preseason under new aggressive philosophy REDSKINS Ryan Kerrigan and Brian Orakpo are two of the biggest names on the Redskins’ defense, and heading into the 2014 season, the linebackers will have to live up to expectations to help Washington be more consistent on that side of the ball. Both players had up-and-down seasons in 2013. Kerrigan started strong, with five sacks in the first four games, but a meniscus tear slowed him down the stretch. “I think there are some things, alignment- and assignment-wise, that are going to allow us to be a little more effective,” Kerrigan said. “Coaches can tweak things but it has to come down to the

4

players making plays.” Orakpo returned from injury in 2013 and posted double-digit sacks for the first time since 2009. Yet the veteran failed to make an impact in several games. Now playing under the franchise tag, which will pay him $11.45 million this season, Orakpo needs to prove he is an elite pass-rusher. “You know, he’s had a great career already,” Redskins coach Jay Gruden said. “We have high hopes for him, and the reason why we franchised him and gave him what we gave him is because we think he’s a hell of a player.” The linebackers fared well in the first three games of the

preseason, as Washington’s defense showed a more aggressive approach in pass pressure that resulted in three sacks for Kerrigan and one for Orakpo. “We’re really excited about the possibilities that we have with [Orakpo] and Kerrigan on the outside, being a little bit more physical, being a little bit more aggressive,” Gruden said. With the season opener around the corner, the Redskins linebackers know that the onus will be on them to step up, especially if the offense continues to labor. “We’re looking pretty good so far, and that’s an encouraging thing,” Kerrigan said. “The preseason is a good litmus test, good to get a little warm-up for the season, but we’re ready for the games to start counting.”

Some stars couldn’t play. Others wouldn’t. But the U.S. team that remains is good enough to win the FIBA Basketball World Cup but vulnerable enough to lose — perhaps to the Spain squad on its home court. “We still have a goal and that’s to win gold, and we can’t [say], ‘Oh, Kevin [Durant] dropped out, Paul [George] got hurt, so this is going to be tough for us,’ ” said U.S. center Anthony Davis, below. “We hear everybody saying that. We’re trying to prove that wrong.” The tournament begins Saturday at four sites throughout Spain and the Canary Islands. The Americans start a fairly benign group against Finland. BRIAN MAHONEY (AP)

Snyder talks about plans for a new stadium The Redskins’ lease at FedEx Field doesn’t expire for more than a decade, but owner Dan Snyder said in an interview with Comcast SportsNet that the team has already started meeting with architectural firms about designing the team’s new home. DAN STEINBERG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

What would it look like? “We’ve already seen some preliminary drawings, and I’m going to be very retro with it,” Snyder told CSN on Wednesday, in an interview scheduled to air on Monday. “It’s going to feel like RFK. It’s going to move like RFK. I love that. I actually asked the architectural firm to do it, and they said they could do it, so I said I think that the local bowl sections are going to want to rock the stadium like the old days.”

Where would it be? Snyder mentioned the District, Maryland and Virginia as possibilities for a new home. District officials have often mentioned their desire to lure back the team in recent years.

When would they move? COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Pierce Brosnan, aka “The November Man,” should perhaps be little more concerned about the fiery catastrophe going on behind him.

Brosnan is not enough Even a former Bond can’t overcome the myriad spy cliches of ‘The November Man’ FILM REVIEW Onetime 007 Pierce Brosnan embraces a darker take on spycraft in Roger Donaldson’s “The November Man,” out now, playing a former CIA agent whose autumnal nickname acknowledges his tendency to leave few alive when he passes through a town. A familiar string of dark secrets, shifting allegiances and (wo)man-whoknew-too-much pursuit propels the storyline (adapted from one in a series of Bill Granger novels), giving Brosnan the opportunity to prove his cool remains intact, sans tux and gadgets. Here, Brosnan plays Peter Devereaux, who in his day was known for his unwillingness to form personal attachments that could compromise his duties.

Like all spies, though, he had his secrets: When the woman he once loved (and who secretly bore him a daughter) dies while spying in Moscow, he becomes the enemy of her killer — his old protege David Mason (Luke Bracey), whose bosses at Langley ordered the hit lest she be captured by the Russians. Make that one Russian in particular: Corrupt former general Arkady Federov (Lazar Ristovski), who is on track to be the next Russian president and wants to erase anyone who knows about the atrocities he committed in the Second Chechen War. Devereaux’s ex was one of those secret-holders, and in following her leads, he winds up saving Alice Fournier (Olga Kurylenko)

from Federov’s top assassin. Fournier is a social worker who has helped some of the girls Federov sold into the sex trade, including one named Mira he made his personal slave. Mira overheard a lot during those years, and powerful people around the globe want to find

her before she tells anyone what she knows. Brosnan, whose old franchise made a smart turn away from superspy fantasy after his departure, plays the gritty side of spookdom well. And though the film’s cat-and-mouse scenes hardly compare to those in a Bourne movie, they’re enjoyable and only occasionally ridiculous. A long sequence in which Devereaux and Mason taunt each other on the phone during a chase makes little sense except for those longing to hear “You’ve lost your touch, old man” cliches. Even the script does little to disguise the fact that we’ve seen and heard all of this many, many times before. JOHN DEFORE (AP)

David Chase issued a statement Wednesday regarding a Vox article, which quoted him saying that Tony Soprano survived the end of the HBO series. “To simply quote David as saying, ‘Tony Soprano is not dead,’ is inaccurate,” Chase’s publicist told Vox. “There is a much larger context for that statement and as such, it is not true. … To continue to search for this answer is fruitless. A perfect pairing: ‘Trip to Italy’ a rare look at guy friends In “The Trip to Italy,” two friends take a trip to Italy. They eat at nice restaurants and stay in nice hotels. There is very little conflict. Then the credits roll on what might be the funniest movie of the year. (“22 Jump Street” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” were really funny, but I’m pretty sure I didn’t have trouble breathing because I was laughing so hard at those, and I know that happened multiple times with “The Trip to Italy.”) British comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, loosely playing themselves, have done this type of movie before — see 2010’s “The Trip,” which gets its own sort-of metaish riff early in the new film — but “Italy” digs a bit deeper and reflects with a bit more clarity the obvious friendship between the two men. And this kind of friendship is rare in

contemporary movies. If it’s tough to find a film that passes the Bechdel test (two women with names speak to each other once about something other than a man), it’s almost as difficult to find a movie with two men whose friendship is not based on getting laid, plotting a heist or fighting crime (or aliens. Or zombies.). I mean, Butch and Sundance are buddies, but you do get the feeling they probably wouldn’t hang out much if people weren’t shooting at them a lot. And they certainly

‘The Trip to Italy’ (unrated) DIRECTOR: Michael Winterbottom STARS: Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon IN A NUTSHELL: Middle-aged British actors Coogan and Brydon (loosely playing themselves) tour the scenic Italian countryside, taking in the food and the sights while contemplating their lives back home.

wouldn’t spend time singing along to Alanis Morissette songs, as Coogan and Brydon do in the film’s funniest scenes. Maybe there are so few movies about adult friends of any gender because, as you get older, it’s harder to BE friends beyond Facebook likes and text messages. You get jobs, you get married, you have kids, and suddenly getting together to get drunk and watch reruns of “Friends” takes Operation Overlord-like planning, when you used to call that “Thursday.” I still have close friends, of course, people who would and have moved heaven and earth to support me in a crisis, but I couldn’t tell you the last time I just chilled on one of their couches, or they on mine. “The Trip to Italy” is in part about the shorthand that develops after a long relationship, particularly the kind that doesn’t have sex or children or a mortgage to hold it together. No one is mean or stupid, which Hollywood often views as synonyms for “funny.” Instead the film trusts (rightfully, it turns out) that an audience will want to spend time hanging out with two guys who clearly enjoy hanging out with each other. Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
