The Rhode Island fire marshal is seeking the person responsible for blowing up a pair of portable toilets last weekend. The first explosion happened around 12:30 a.m. Saturday at a construction site in Westerly. The second occurred in a parking lot in Charlestown. Police say a fisherman heard an explosion at about 11 p.m. Saturday. The Office of the State Fire Marshal says there’s no indication of any terrorist links to the explosions. (AP)

A Fort Wayne, Ind., police officer sent to investigate squatters in an abandoned apartment found an alligator lurking inside instead. Police say the officer found the young reptile in a closet Tuesday. Spokeswoman Sofia Rosales-Scatena tells The Journal Gazette the alligator “was a baby, for sure.” Police joked on Facebook the gator was a “beast” and said there were “tense moments until animal control arrived to take the creature away.” (AP)

A New York woman fishing on Lake Champlain made an unusual catch: a fish with two mouths, Fox News reported Wednesday. “When we got it in the boat I couldn’t believe what I was seeing! Two mouths! It won’t be studied in person, though: Geddes released it. (EXPRESS)

Buffalo Billiards’ final shot THE DISTRICT Bar owners Geoff Dawson and Mark Handwerger thought Buffalo Billiards would always be around. But this Saturday, their flagship bar is closing after 25 years. The over 13,000-square-foot Dupont neighborhood spot provided a place to play pool and Skee-Ball and get reasonably priced drinks. It served as a gathering spot for District Trivia and Michigan football fans. “I don’t know how we pulled it off, but we built an amazing place,” Dawson says. Handwerger credits the managers and staff, many of whom worked for them for years, for the bar’s long run of success. The co-owners even counted 11 babies that have been born as a result of people meeting at the bar. But Dawson says that number is a “big underestimate,” citing all the people over the years who have brought their children in to show them where their parents met. Last November, the building was sold to a developer and the

Buffalo Billiards’ neighbor in the New Hampshire Avenue building, The Front Page, closed this month after 32 years in business. “[WeWork] didn’t think we were such a good fit for the neighborhood,” Dawson says. “I don’t know how you could be a better fit.” As Dawson and Handwerger prepare for one final last call, they see a city that has changed. Handwerger fondly recalls attending Mister Days’ “Rally in the Alley” off 18th Street NW; throwing darts at a bar known as the 4Ps in Cleveland Park; and going to shows at The Bayou under Whitehurst Freeway. He and Dawson are glad to see other neighborhood bars like Dan’s Cafe and The Big Hunt still kicking. This Saturday, Buffalo Billiards is hosting a party for its last day, and customers can buy pieces of its decor, or “Buffalobilia,” through an online auction. Part of the proceeds will benefit So Others Might Eat, a community-based organization that fights poverty. The co-owners will continue to focus on their other bars, including Bedrock Billiards in Adams Morgan and Atomic Billiards in Cleveland Park. Dawson owns the company behind Penn Social. As for reopening Buffalo Billiards — Dawson says it’s hard to find a space of that size, but they are keeping an eye out. Yet Handwerger adds, “You couldn’t really just throw out a shingle at a different address and re-create it.” RACHEL PODNAR (EXPRESS)

Va. marks Africans’ arrival

VIRGINIA Four hundred years after American slavery and democratic selfrule were born in what became the state of Virginia, ceremonies will mark the arrival of enslaved Africans in the mid-Atlantic colony and seek healing from a legacy of bondage. Weekend events in Tidewater Virginia will unfold against rising white nationalism across the country, racist tweets by President Trump, and a lingering blackface scandal surrounding the state’s governor. Commemorations will include Sunday’s “Healing Day” on the Chesapeake Bay, where two ships traded men and women for food and supplies from English colonists in August 1619. A bell will ring for four minutes; churches nationwide are set to join in. Virginia’s two U.S. senators and its governor will make remarks at a Saturday ceremony. A family that traces its bloodline to those first Africans will hold a reflection at its cemetery on Friday. “This moment means everything to folks like myself who are African American and to the folks on the continent of Africa as well,” said Mary Elliott, curator of American slavery at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. “But it should mean something to everybody, regardless of

race,” she added, “because it is a moment that defined the nation.” Though little noted at the time, the arrival of the enslaved Africans in England’s first successful colony is now considered pivotal in American history. In a document from the time, Englishman John Rolfe wrote that leaders of the colony traded provisions to buy the slaves. From the White Lion and another ship, English colonists took more than 30 Africans to properties along the James River. By that time, more than 500,000 enslaved Africans had already crossed the Atlantic to European colonies, but the Africans in Virginia are widely considered the first in Englishcontrolled North America. They

came 12 years after the founding of Jamestown, England’s first permanent colony. Quentin Kidd, a political science professor at Christopher Newport University, said the commemoration’s timing highlights the country’s foundational contradictions on race. “We want to recognize this historic event,” Kidd said. “And at the same time, we have a president who spouts off racist things. And we have a governor who still has not satisfied everybody when it comes to the blackface scandal.” In February, a picture surfaced from Gov. Ralph Northam’s medical school yearbook page showing a man in blackface next to someone in Ku Klux Klan clothing. Northam denies involvement.

He will speak Saturday about “the atrocity of slavery” and “the racial inequities that continue to persist,” his press secretary said. The 1619 commemoration follows recent racist tweets from Trump. Yet Trump also signed into law a requirement for a panel to develop programs that acknowledge Africans’ arrival. Among the commission’s members is Terry Brown, the first black superintendent of the Fort Monroe National Monument, a former U.S. military base on the site of the Africans’ 1619 arrival. Brown said Healing Day will allow people from all walks of life “to talk, to laugh, to cry and in some small way to break the insidiousness of racism.” BEN FINLEY (AP)

But the agency in charge of budgets initially put the park funds in the wrong category — “an innocent mistake arising from a minor staff error,” a spokesman told the Sun. (EXPRESS)

Gun control group eyes swing districts National effort vows to spend $2.5M in Va. to oppose Republicans VIRGINIA The national gun-control group Everytown for Gun Safety is beginning a digital advertising blitz in suburban swing districts in Virginia’s pivotal fall election, targeting Republican lawmakers in Northern Virginia, Richmond and Hampton Roads. The Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund has launched $135,000 in online ads to kick off a promised $2.5 million in spending this year in Virginia, which the group views as a proving ground for gun control before the 2020 presidential election. Democrats feel the strategy can help them win control of the legislature this fall, when all 140 seats are up for election. With no presidential or gubernatorial races to drive turnout, Democrats have to stir interest in districts that have been trending blue. Republicans are defending narrow majorities of 20-19 in the state Senate and 51-48 in the House of Delegates. “Everytown comes in every single year [since 2011],” said

John Findlay, executive director of the Republican Party of Virginia. “If the gun issue was as potent as Everytown thinks it is, we would’ve had Democrat majorities in the House and Senate for the past eight years.” Guns became a major political issue in the state after a May 31 mass shooting in Virginia Beach, where a gunman killed 12 people at a municipal building. Republican leaders last month adjourned a special legislative session on the issue after 90 minutes, referring more than 60 bills to the State Crime Commission, which met for two days this week to hear from experts and bill sponsors. Everytown, founded by billionaire former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, said it conducted a poll that showed about 6 in 10 voters in swing districts said Republican opposition to gun control was a convincing reason to vote against the party. The poll found positive reaction to proposed “red flag” laws, which allow authorities to temporarily seize guns from someone deemed a threat. The group said it also believes Virginians oppose how Republicans handled the legislative session. GREGORY S. SCHNEIDER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Planned Parenthood hits major money crunch

HIGH-TECH TEACHER

Meet ‘Mindar,’ Buddhism’s robotic priest

Group leaves federal funding program over new rules on abortion

RICK BOWMER (AP)

SALT LAKE CITY Planned Parenthood clinics in several states are charging new fees, tapping financial reserves, intensifying fundraising and warning of more unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases after its decision to quit a $260 million federal family planning program in an abortion dispute with the Trump administration. The fallout is intense in Utah, where Planned Parenthood has been the only provider participating in the Title X family planning program and will now lose about $2 million yearly in federal funds that helped 39,000 mostly low-income, uninsured people. It plans to maintain its services — which include contraception, STD testing and cancer screening — but is considering charging a copay for patients who used to get care for free. Planned Parenthood in Minnesota is in a similar situation, serving about 90% of the state’s Title X patients, and plans to start charging fees due to the loss of $2.6 million in annual funding. Planned Parenthood and several other providers withdrew from the program earlier this week rather than comply with a newly implemented rule prohibiting participating clinics from

referring women for abortions. Anti-abortion activists who form a key part of President Trump’s base have been campaigning to “defund Planned Parenthood.” Among its varied services it is a major abortion provider, and the activists viewed the grants as an indirect subsidy. About 4 million women are served nationwide by the Title X program, which makes up a much bigger portion of Planned Parenthood’s patients than abortion. But the organization said it could not abide by the abortionreferral rules because it says they would make it impossible for doctors to do their jobs. Misty Dotson, a single mother in Utah, started going to Planned Parenthood as doctors’ bills

mounted. The services became even more important when she gave up her employer-sponsored health insurance because she couldn’t afford the $500 monthly bill. She is unsure what she’d do if the services she gets stop. “It would put me in a very dangerous position,” Dotson said. Elsewhere, the impact of Planned Parenthood’s withdrawal will vary. In the Deep South, there will be little impact because Planned Parenthood did not provide Title X services in most of the region’s states. Governments in some Democratic-controlled states, including New York and Vermont, say they will try to replace at least some of the lost federal funding.

The Amazon is ablaze

While disaster unfolds, Brazil’s president says fires were set to make him look bad

Overstock CEO out over remark on ‘deep state’

scientist at the Federal University of Para. “I cannot remember any other big fire episode like this one,” he said. “It is also sharply overlapped with the increased deforestation. Attributing the whole episode to natural causes only is practically impossible.” The contrast between Bolsonaro’s claims and what the science says has researchers worried over how to safeguard one of the world’s most important resources. Scientists warn that the Amazon is approaching a tipping point. “Anyone can go to [the space research institute] and see the fire alerts all over,” said Ricardo Mello, head of the World Wide Fund for Nature’s Amazon Program. “You can see that they’re real — they’re seen by infrared cameras. There’s no way that you can deny this. … It’s very naive for him to say that’s not happening.”

BUSINESS The CEO of Overstock.com resigned Thursday, saying he was “far too controversial” after disclosing that he had aided in a “deep state” investigation into the 2016 election and was romantically involved with a Russian agent. Patrick Byrne had led the e-commerce retailer for two decades. “Though patriotic Americans are writing me in support, my presence may affect and complicate all manner of business relationships,” he told shareholders in a letter Thursday. “Thus, while I believe that I did what was necessary for the good of the country, for the good of the firm, I am in the sad position of having to sever ties with Overstock.” Byrne confirmed in a company news release last week that he had been romantically involved for three years with Maria Butina, a Russian gun rights activist who is now serving 18 months in prison for trying to influence U.S. policy ahead of the 2016 election. He also said he had been aiding federal authorities, whom he called “the Men in Black,” in their “Clinton investigation” and “Russia investigation.” Shares of Overstock.com fell 36% following the initial disclosures. On Thursday, the stock jumped more than 9%. Jonathan E. Johnson III has been appointed interim CEO.

ENVIRONMENT The signs of crisis are all around. Sao Paulo, the Western Hemisphere’s biggest city, was covered in a blanket of smoke this week that turned day to night. The viral campaign #PrayfortheAmazon is washing across social media. And one of the government’s leading research agencies is saying that rates of deforestation in the Amazon are skyrocketing — along with the rate of forest fires. But Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, the man most able to stanch the unfolding crisis in the Amazon, isn’t just ignoring the problem. He’s suggesting it’s being staged to make him look bad. Asked this week about the surging fires in the world’s most precious forest — the area scorched has more than doubled in the past two years — he accused nongovernment organizations of setting them, to “call attention” against his government. “The fire was started, it seemed, in strategic locations,” he said. “There are images of the entire Amazon. How can that be? Everything indicates that people went there to film and then to set fires. That is my feeling.” This comes weeks after he accused the director of a government agency that monitors the Amazon of lying about rising deforestation — and fired him. The controversies have become not only a major political distraction — drawing criticism from some of the nation’s top scientists — but they’re also posing a mortal threat to Brazil’s position as global leader on the environment. Bolsonaro ran for office last year in part on promises to open the Amazon for business. Deforestation has surged since he took office at the beginning of the year. In July alone, according to Brazil’s National Institute for Space

Fires fueled by winds from a cold front produced startling and ominous scenes from the Amazon this month.

Research, the Amazon lost 870 square miles of forest — more than half the size of Rhode Island. The Amazon forest serves as the lungs of the planet, taking in carbon dioxide, storing it in soils and producing oxygen. Scientists agree it is one of the world’s great defenses against climate change. Farmers and others burn the rainforest to clear land and maintain open space. Bolsonaro, trying to lift the country out of economic stagnation, is encouraging development in the region. But Carlos Nobre, one of Brazil’s foremost scientists, says that activity will cause more harm. “We make a joke that the forest is becoming like Swiss cheese, with … roads and things crossing in the forest,” he said. “And it becomes more vulnerable and degraded. … And the more the forest becomes degraded, the more the forest will become vulnerable to forest fires.” Those fires, fueled by winds

Scale of the disaster Destruction and human contact inside the Amazon is making what was once thought to be all but impossible — wildfires in a rainforest — possible. The area in Brazil’s Amazon regions razed by fire has more than doubled in two years, from 3,168 square miles during the first seven months of 2017 to 7,192 square miles during the same period this year, Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research reported. In Brazil, the Amazon has suffered 74,155 fires since January, the space research institute reported. That’s up 85% from last year. (TWP)

nation+world Seoul will stop sharing military intelligence as trade dispute deepens SEOUL South Korea said Thursday it will terminate an intelligencesharing deal with Japan that focused on classified information about North Korea, an announcement that is likely to set back U.S. efforts to bolster security cooperation with two of its most important allies in the region. South Korea attributed the decision to its bitter trade dispute with Japan, which has plunged the two countries’ relations to their lowest point since they established diplomatic ties in 1965. Japanese Foreign Minister

POTENT POTUS

Taro Kono called the decision “extremely regrettable” and summoned the South Korean ambassador to protest the linking of trade and security issues. South Korea’s presidential office said it terminated the intelligence deal because Japan’s recent decision to downgrade South Korea’s trade status caused a “grave” change in security cooperation between the countries. Last month, Japan imposed stricter controls on exports to South Korea of three chemicals essential for manufacturing semiconductors and display screens — key export items for South Korea — and removed South Korea from a list of countries given preferential trade status.

South Korea accuses Japan of weaponizing trade to punish it over a separate dispute linked to Japan’s brutal colonial rule of

Liberal South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who earlier declared his country would “never again lose” to Japan, used the Aug. 15 anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japan to extend an olive branch. Moon said Seoul will “gladly join hands” if Tokyo wanted to talk. South Korea has been seeking U.S. help in resolving the trade dispute, and Seoul and Washington have also been working together to restart stalled talks on stripping North Korea of its nuclear weapons. The Pentagon on Thursday expressed “strong concern and disappointment” in the collapse of the agreement.

President Trump has inspired cartoons, costumes and plenty of impersonations. Now, people can apparently purchase ecstasy in the shape of Trump’s face. It even sports his trademark coiffure. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office in Florida said a man was charged last week after police confirmed five Trumpthemed orange tablets seized during a search of his home were in fact illicit drugs. COX’S BAZAR, BANGLADESH | Laborers rest Thursday at a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh. More than 700,000 people fled to Bangladesh after Myanmar began cracking down on the ethnic Muslim minority two years ago. Myanmar cleared more than 3,000 refugees to return and said that a repatriation operation would begin Thursday. But none of the refugees turned up, demanding guarantees of safety and citizenship first.

HEALTH The World Health Organization says the levels of microplastics in drinking water don’t appear to be risky, but that research has been spotty and more research is needed into their effects on the environment and health. Microplastics are created when man-made materials break down into tiny particles smaller than about one-fifth of an inch, although there is no strict scientific definition. In a report published Wednesday, the U.N. health agency said the minuscule plastics are “ubiquitous in the environment” and have been found in drinking water, including both tap and bottled, most likely as the result of treatment and distribution systems. “But just because we’re ingesting them doesn’t mean we have a risk to human health,” said Bruce Gordon, WHO’s coordinator of water, sanitation and hygiene. “The main conclusion is, I think, if you are a consumer drinking bottled water or tap water, you shouldn’t necessarily be concerned.” Gordon acknowledged, however, that the available data is “weak” and also urged broader efforts to reduce plastic pollution. The report is WHO’s first review to investigate the potential human health risks of microplastics. It said people have inadvertently consumed microplastics for decades without signs of harm. Trump’s big wedge: Israel Why his support for the Jewish state has failed to win over U.S. Jews

62%

Fox News hires Sanders to be a contributor

President Trump, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, presents a presidential proclamation on the Golan Heights in March.

president’s rhetoric about Jews magnifies his transactional approach to politics and his miscalculation that his hawkish interpretation of support for Israel should automatically translate into electoral support from Jewish Americans. It also reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of the motivations of many Jews, who are not a monolithic voting bloc but rather prioritize a wide range of issues — not only Israel, but also education, the economy and the environment, as well as civility and morality. “He is reflecting a concept of Jewish Americans as singleissue voters around Israel, which we’re not; that we’re uniformly hawkish on these issues, which

we’re not,” said Jeremy Ben-Ami, president of J Street, a liberal pro-Israel advocacy group. “In reality, what matters most to us are the exact values that the president is spending his term trashing. We care about equality and justice, and we embrace the notion that this is a nation of immigrants and opportunity for all.” Looking to his 2020 reelection bid, Trump is thrusting Israel into the culture wars he has waged as president. He is trying to make support for Israel a litmus test — along with immigration and guns — and calling Democrats anti-Semitic to fire up his base. Trump’s transactional expectations for Jewish voting patterns

reflect how he views other voting blocs. He routinely defends himself against charges that he is racist by citing the relatively low unemployment rate for blacks on his watch, as well as the criminal justice legislation he signed last year, as if those are the only issues of concern to black voters. In the 2016 election, 71% of Jewish voters cast ballots for Hillary Clinton and 23% for Trump, according to exit polling. Gallup tracking poll data in 2018 showed that just 26% of Jewish Americans approved of Trump’s performance as president while 71% disapproved, making Jews the least likely of any of the religious groups studied to support Trump. PHILIP RUCKER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

TRUMP’S DISAPPROVAL RATING

The proportion of Americans who disapprove of President Trump’s overall job performance, according to a poll released Thursday by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Just 36% of Americans approve of the way Trump is handling his job as president. Trump’s approval rating has never dipped below 32% or risen above 42% in AP-NORC polls since he took office. Since Gallup began measuring presidential approval, Trump is the only president whose rating has never been above 50%. (AP) Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee, D, ends presidential bid, announcing that he’ll seek a third term

JABIN BOTSFORD (THE WASHINGTON POST)

ANALYSIS President Trump decided long ago that it would be smart politics for him to yoke his administration to Israel and to try to brand the Democratic Party as anti-Semitic. He set about executing a proIsrael checklist: moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, recognizing the Golan Heights as part of sovereign Israel, and taking a hard line against Iran. And he promoted himself as the greatest president — a deity even — for Jewish people. Yet Trump has become flummoxed that Jewish Americans are not in turn lining up to support his reelection, according to people familiar with his thinking, and he has lashed out in predictable fashion. “If you vote for a Democrat, you’re very, very disloyal to Israel and to the Jewish people,” Trump said Wednesday. He was amplifying a statement he made a day earlier: “I think any Jewish people that vote for a Democrat, I think it shows either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty.” Trump’s use of the word “disloyalty” drew immediate criticism from Jewish groups, whose leaders said it echoed anti-Semitic tropes about where American Jews’ loyalty lies. The president insisted his comments were not anti-Semitic. Regardless, this turn in the

POLITICS Fox News has hired former White House press secretary Sarah Sanders as a contributor, adding another loyalist to President Trump to its lineup. Sanders served as Trump’s press secretary from July 2017 until late June, when she resigned, saying she was moving back to her native Arkansas. She is widely considered to be eyeing a run for governor of the state, but has not announced. Sanders is the daughter of Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas who is also a Fox News contributor. She joined Trump’s campaign in 2016 after managing her father’s unsuccessful bid for the Republican nomination against Trump. Former press secretaries are typically in high demand by the cable news networks because of their insight into the personalities, politics and policies at the White House and their name recognition. Top White House communications officials such as George Stephanopoulos (ABC), Dee Dee Myers (CNBC), Jay Carney (CNN), and Robert Gibbs (NBC), among others, all went on to TV pundit careers after working for presidents. Fox has a long history of providing a platform for Republicans hoping to maintain their visibility before launching new campaigns for office. Most prominently, it gave Trump a regular weekly spot on “Fox & Friends” in 2011. PAUL FARHI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THREE POINTERS

Players like the Clemson Tigers — who won the College Football Playoff last season — bring in the revenues that the selection committee spends lavishly.

SALLY JENKINS | THE WASHINGTON POST

College’s fat cats: ADs, not athletes, get sweet perks Appearances matter — to some people. But apparently not to the athletic directors who cheat college students to the tune of seven figures. If you think this assessment is too harsh, check out the RitzCarlton oceanside resort where the College Football Playoff selection committee stayed last week, at the expense of the kids who actually play. The 13-member committee won’t issue rankings until November, yet they somehow required a multiday conference in Laguna Niguel, Calif., at a hotel where the cheapest rooms start at $681 a night. How did committee chair Rob Mullens of Oregon and his fellow ADs — including Joe Castiglione of Oklahoma, Scott Stricklin of Florida, R.C. Slocum of Texas A&M, Todd Stansbury of Georgia Tech, Gary Barta of Iowa and Terry Mohajir of Arkansas State — justify this

summer convocation at the Ritz? According to the CFP press office, the committee “reviewed the schedule for its weekly rankings, went over its protocol, and finalized the list of members who will be recused” from voting on certain schools. They also went over how to use their electronics and video. Now, look. The schedule for weekly rankings is this: They come out every Tuesday. Period. As for the “protocol,” it was written in 2012 and has not changed. And recusal is simple: You can’t vote for your own school. But for some reason these matters required deep thought on the beach at Dana Point. What Mullens and Co. could not have known was that they were being watched with mounting disgust by two major donors vacationing at the same hotel. This married couple, who estimate they have sponsored 100 or so scholarships at their Big Ten alma mater, wrote me about what they saw

because they believe the scene “captures what’s wrong” with collegiate athletics. “Meals on the terrace overlooking the ocean,” they wrote. “Meeting rooms with ocean views.” No one can dispute the committee’s need to meet — they need to review their duties and introduce new members to their protocols. And they are entitled to do so at a decent hotel, given that they are not paid to sit on the committee, and some are not employed by athletic departments, such as former Army chief of staff Ray Odierno and NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott. But the Ritz? This offends the senses — and shows a telling carelessness if not a callousness toward athletes. The billion-dollar revenues of the College Football Playoff are driven by the players — not administrators — and yet the system feeds everyone to excess except for them. Anybody with a conscience understands that scholarships are hardly decent recompense for their brutal workweeks. They face a yawning gap between what they create, and what is withheld from them by the NCAA’s antiquated rules, and change is needed. Legislation such as California’s proposed “Fair Pay for Play” act seeks to rectify the injustice. How entitled must these athletic directors be that they would go on a spree in this

Former Terps QB Kasim Hill, who started 10 games last season before hurting knee, transfers to Tennessee

climate? Think about what it cost — 13 people for multiple days, plus meeting rooms and meals, plus flights. Dinner at the resort’s steakhouse cost $158 for a salad, signature cut and one side dish (no alcohol, coffee or dessert). Who OK’d such largesse? That would be the CFP board of managers, and management committee: 11 university presidents and chancellors, including Texas’ Greg Fenves and Notre Dame’ John Jenkins, and 10 conference commissioners, such as Jim Delany (Big Ten) and Larry Scott (Pac-12). In other words, the same overstuffed suits who have been jacking athletes for years, hoarding the revenues for themselves and cronies, while enjoying fruits of free labor. I wrote to some of them to ask how they justified the meeting’s luxury. The only response came from Bill Hancock, the respected executive director of the College Football Playoff, who defended the value of the meeting to help members prep for significant work and travel this fall. My conclusion? The College Football Playoff generates so much money that these administrators mean to spend it somehow — on everything but the athletes.

D.C. UNITED AT PHILADELPHIA UNION | 7:30 P.M. SATURDAY, FLOSPORTS

Farewell tour sputtering MLS When news broke two weeks ago that star striker Wayne Rooney would cut short his D.C. United stint, returning to England after 1½ seasons in MLS, it came with a silver lining: D.C. fans had another nine regular-season matches, plus a likely playoff run, to savor his services. But Rooney subsequently missed a 2-1 win over the LA Galaxy because of illness. He returned for last weekend’s 1-0 loss at the Vancouver Whitecaps but was hooked in the second half, berating the fourth official on the way out. Then he earned a red card Wednesday for a forearm to an opponent’s head 24 minutes into a 2-1 defeat to the New York Red Bulls at Audi Field. With Rooney suspended for the visit by United (10-9-9) to the Philadelphia Union (13-86) on Saturday, he has just five regular-season matches remaining to leave his mark. With D.C. in a 1-4-1 slump, with just four goals scored in that span, the

club’s playoff ambitions have slipped into peril. “We need to refocus,” Rooney said. “For a lot of the games we’ve struggled to score goals or create the chances we want. That’s something we need to try and improve rapidly going into this last run of games.” United sits fifth in the East, with the top seven teams qualifying for the postseason. But just five points separate D.C. from the clubs on the outside looking in. Although Rooney paces United with 11 goals and seven assists, he hasn’t put his name on the score sheet in over a month. Attacking partner Luciano Acosta — whose own contract expires

at season’s end — has been in a funk as well, failing to notch a goal or assist since June 1 and earning a spot on the bench for United’s past three games. Despite the drama surrounding Rooney and Acosta and the team’s overall slump, the recent additions of midfielder Felipe Martins, winger Emmanuel Boateng and big-money striker Ola Kamara — who curled home a stunning strike to open his D.C. scoring account Wednesday — offer hope for a turnaround. “You can change the course of a season in a game,” coach Ben Olsen said. “I think that there’s a group in there that can do it, but it’s got to happen soon.”

Safety Patrick Chung, a key component of the Patriots’ defense for most of the past 10 seasons, was indicted by a New Hampshire grand jury on a felony cocainepossession charge Aug. 8, court documents released Thursday show. If his case goes to trial, court documents have targeted next March for jury selection, The Boston Globe reported. It’s unlikely that Chung, 32, would face any possible NFL discipline until his legal situation is resolved.

Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova will finally meet in the U.S. Open, and they’ll do it in their first match, at 10 a.m. Monday on Day One of the event in New York. A Roger FedererRafael Nadal showdown could come only in the final. Federer could play Novak Djokovic in a semifinal. The draws were conducted Thursday. Williams and Sharapova have met in the finals of the other three majors and the 2012 Olympics but have never played each other in the U.S. Open. Williams is 19-2 against her in WTA events. Longtime coach banned for sexual misconduct Richard Callaghan, the longtime U.S. figure skating coach best known for leading Tara Lipinski to a 1998 Olympic gold medal, was declared “permanently ineligible” Wednesday by the U.S. Center for SafeSport because of sexual misconduct allegations “involving a minor.” The ban, first reported by USA Today, came 12 days after Adam Schmidt, now 34, filed a lawsuit in San Diego alleging that Callaghan, now 73, had abused him from 1999 to 2001 while coaching him. Players who could become salary cap casualties before Week 1 Teams know it’s good business to cut rosters before the deadline. They get time to manage their salary caps, and players appreciate the time to seek a new job. Here are some well-known players who could get cut before Week 1: JOHN CLAYTON (TWP)

Lamar Miller

Lamar Miller

Daniel Sorensen

Russell Okung

Nate Sudfeld

Chris Boswell

Texans running back

Chiefs safety

Chargers offensive tackle

Eagles quarterback

Steelers kicker

Even though he went to the Pro Bowl last year as a fill-in, he hasn’t fully lived up to his four-year contract, which expires after the season. The Texans traded for RB Duke Johnson, whose contract averages $5.2 million. Cutting Miller would save $6.2 million under the cap.

The Chiefs love Sorensen, 29, but they have to keep planning to free up cap room for some of their young players. Rookie safety Juan Thornhill could end up starting next to Tyrann Mathieu, making Sorensen a $4 million backup for a couple of years.

Because of a blood clot problem, it’s not known if he is going to be able to play this season. Okung, who will be 31 on Oct. 7, is in the third year of a fouryear, $53 million contract; cutting him would save the Chargers close to $11 million on this year’s cap.

The Eagles wanted him to back up Carson Wentz, but a broken wrist and Cody Kessler’s concussion forced them to sign 40-year-old Josh McCown. If the Eagles don’t want to keep three QBs, they could injury-settle with Sudfeld and save much of his $3 million contract.

He is dueling Matthew Wright for the top job. Boswell is on a $4.2 million per year deal; letting him go would save $2.2 million. If the battle against Wright is close, the Steelers could go for the cap savings. They also might get trade interest from the Bears or Jets.

Is Gerard Butler phoning it in? We’ll let you be the judge …

ALSO OPENING

‘Aquarela’

‘Angel’ and its demons The third movie in the ‘Fallen’ saga is plagued by clunky action and laughable effects FILM REVIEW Against all better judgment, another installment of the “Fallen” series has arisen. Well, maybe not all better judgment. Those who stand to squeeze even more money from a franchise that has already earned nearly $376 million at the worldwide box office (for “Olympus Has Fallen” and “London Has Fallen”) surely thought a third movie was a good idea. That means we get to sit through another chapter in the adventures of Mike Banning (Gerard Butler), a Secret Service agent code-named Angel. This latest installment, titled “Angel Has Fallen,” delivers a nihilistic message: Everyone is to blame for the current state

of the world. In what you might expect to be a mind-numbing explosion-fest, the most novel thing about the new movie is its thematic underpinning. As the film opens, Banning is on the verge of hanging up his earpiece, yet, predictably, he’s also about to earn a promotion to head up the Secret Service. During an assassination attempt by drone that leaves the president (Morgan Freeman) in a coma, every member of the presidential security detail is killed — except Banning. When he comes to in the hospital, our hero is accused of planning the attack. In a nod to the current political climate that will almost surely elicit groans, the FBI has found evidence on

the Dark Web suggesting a link between Banning and the Kremlin. What follows are the sort of perfunctory twists and turns that any attentive viewer will spot from a mile away. But the way the movie shapes its plot into a kind of social commentary is worth chewing on. Who is to blame for

our national panic? Here’s the real mystery: How does an $80 million movie end up looking so low-rent? Several exterior shots look like a soundstage. Action set pieces are laughably choreographed. In one, Banning flees an exploding building, but the CGI is so obvious that he never looks the least bit in danger. Most action flicks would settle for thrilling violence and mayhem, in service of a utilitarian plot. “Angel” flips this formula on its head, delivering a surprisingly coherent story but with no discernible sense of fun. We all might be better off at this point if Banning simply traded his badge for angel’s wings. HAU CHU (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Dwayne Johnson’s earnings from June 1, 2018, to June 1, 2019, according to Forbes, making him the world’s highest-paid male actor. Chris Hemsworth came in second with $76.4 million, while his “Avengers: Endgame” co-star Robert Downey Jr. was third with $66 million. Bollywood star Akshay Kumar and Jackie Chan finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Bradley Cooper, Adam Sandler, Chris Evans, Paul Rudd and Will Smith rounded out the top 10. (EXPRESS)

PG, 90 min.

The shadow of climate change lurks just under the blue watery surface of this beautiful yet unsettling documentary. A sense of slight monotony does sometimes creep in after so many shots of ice, calving glaciers, heaving waves, sea foam, rain, snow, fog, mist, etc. Despite these occasional moments of tedium, however, “Aquarela” is at once chilling and likely to make your blood boil. ‘Cold Case Hammarskjold’ Unrated, 128 min.

In this unsettling, formally slippery film about the 1961 death of United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold, the entire notion of investigative documentary is turned on its head, as viewers are led down an increasingly vertiginous path to the mercenary underside of global realpolitik. Taylor Swift plots to thwart Scooter Braun

It’s family game night in “Ready or Not,” and these folks play for keeps.

Hope you’re not waiting for this wedding night ‘Ready or Not’ plays its violence for laughs. Too bad it’s not funny. FILM REVIEW Have you heard about the satirical horror thriller where a bunch of superwealthy elites callously hunt down a normal young woman, who ultimately turns the tables on them? No, not “The Hunt,” the controversial film that recently got pulled from release by Universal. The film is “Ready or Not,” and it’s slipping into theaters, with essentially the same story, without a peep of political dissent. Unlike “The Hunt,” in which wealthy Americans hunt a group of average Joes and Janes purely for sport, the one-percenter villains in “Ready or Not” — a family whose money derives from a business that includes the manufacture of board games and ownership of several professional sports teams — stalk their victim in a perverse and bloody version of hide-and-seek. It isn’t for pleasure, you see, but

‘Ready or Not’ (R, 95 min.) DIRECTORS: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett STARS: Samara Weaving, Mark O’Brien, Adam Brody, Henry Czerny IN A NUTSHELL: A young bride joins her new husband’s rich, eccentric family in a time-honored tradition that turns into a lethal game.

self-preservation. To maintain their livelihood, and their very lives, they’ve made a pact with the devil, dating from the Civil War, that includes one stipulation: Any outsider who wishes to join the family — in this case Grace, the bride-to-be of the family’s youngest son — must join the family in a game, chosen at random, on her wedding night. Unfortunately, Grace (Samara Weaving) picks a pastime that entails her being pursued by in-laws wielding firearms, a crossbow and a medieval poleax. Brought to you by the horror filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence — aka co-directors

Missy Elliott album “Iconology” drops Friday

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and executive producer Chad Villella, whose résumé includes the awful “Devil’s Due” — the film is polished and professional. And Weaving makes for a moderately appealing heroine, eliciting our sympathy — if also a few groans — as she suffers through bullet wounds and other grisly injuries. All the violence is, of course, played for laughs. The dialogue is less than sparkling, and what passes for witty repartee is mainly a barrage of sarcastically delivered F-bombs and such insults as “gold-digging whore.” The style of acting would, at a sporting event, merely be called shouting. Nicky Guadagni, as the family’s bloodthirsty dowager aunt, is the most histrionic, leading Andie MacDowell and Adam Brody — those names are not typos — to move through the film with expressions of profound mortification on their faces. As for the rest of the cast, they seem to be having a blast. Your mileage may vary. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN

Taylor Swift plans to rerecord her old songs after her catalog was purchased by former Kanye West manager Scooter Braun, the pop star confirmed Thursday. “That’s true, and that’s something that I’m very excited about doing,” Swift said when asked about the possibility on “Good Morning America.” “My contract says that starting November 2020 — so next year — I can record albums one through five all over again.” In late June, Braun’s Ithaca Holdings announced that it had acquired Big Machine Label Group, home to Swift’s existing albums. “Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it,” Swift wrote in a Tumblr post, referring to Braun as a “manipulative bully.” (EXPRESS/AP)

Variety: Fox developing Sarah Michelle Gellar series “Other People’s Houses”

Doc ‘American Factory’ builds a human story FILM REVIEW Phrases like “globalization,” “postindustrial capitalism” and “cultural dislocation” have a way of making the eyes glaze over. But those ideas share a common heart: working people. “American Factory,” an exquisite documentary now streaming on Netflix, tells a macroeconomic story through the micro-level experiences of indelible real-life characters. In 2008, filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar embedded at a General Motors assembly plant in Dayton, Ohio, and made the short film, “The Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant.” Six years later, the plant reopened under the ownership of Fuyao, a Chinese company that makes automotive glass. Reichert and Bognar once again gained remarkable access. What happens when an American labor force grounded in the values of collective bargaining and strong health and safety standards confronts younger colleagues schooled in the discipline and punishing self-denial of China’s commandcontrol form of capitalism? To its enormous credit, “American Factory” isn’t content merely to stay on the surface. As the first movie to emerge from Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions, “American Factory” feels like a perfect vehicle for the company’s mission to lift up stories from underrepresented groups. The week’s best movie previews

‘Marriage Story’

‘Bombshell’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Fall 2019

EXPECTED RELEASE: Dec. 20

SUMMARY: Why plug your film with one preview when you can drop two? That was Netflix’s strategy for Noah Baumbach’s latest movie. In one trailer, Adam Driver’s Charlie waxes poetic about his wife, Nicole (Scarlett Johansson). In the other, those roles are flipped. The through line: A heart-wrenching twinge as you get a glimpse at this messy marriage. THOMAS FLOYD (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Jay Roach’s next movie shines a light on the women who brought an end to Roger Ailes’ reign at Fox News. The cast includes Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie, but the headliner is Charlize Theron, whose transformation into Megyn Kelly looks so convincing that we’re, like, 90 percent sure that Kelly is secretly playing herself. @MACCORMIER, joking about Apple’s care instructions for the Apple Card. Customers are told not to let it touch other cards and that leather and denim — the materials of many wallets and pants — could cause discoloration. To clean the card, Apple says to first use a dry microfiber cloth, then gently wipe it with a cloth moistened with isopropyl alcohol.

I would like to recognize the distributor at the Benning Road station. He is always respectful and kind and wishes me to have a good day or, in the case of today, an entire weekend of goodness. I know I can depend on him for a dose of happiness to start my morning commute.

“If you want to throw a chair, you have to throw an entire row.” @RO_SMITH, joking about the seats

for Thursday’s exhibition game between the U.S. and Australia men’s basketball teams. Fans who purchased floor tickets at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium were seated in rows of plastic chairs that were linked by cable ties and ground-level with the court. Many fans in the back had to rely on the Jumbotron to see the action. The U.S. won the game, 102-86.

“I’m sure when Macron said, ‘Make yourself feel at home,’ he didn’t mean this ... ” @DELMODY, tweeting about British

Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s conduct at the Élysée Palace. During a Thursday meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, Johnson placed his foot on a table. Outrage ensued, though video of the moment showed the leaders joking that it could be a footstool.

@KEELECTRIC_LADY, criticizing the premise of MTV’s new show, “MTV’s Ghosted: Love Gone Missing.” Hosted by Travis Mills, left, and Rachel Lindsay, former star of “The Bachelorette,” the show aims to get answers for people whose family, friends or partners suddenly disappeared on them. “Ghosting” refers to someone cutting off contact without explanation. Many Twitter users blasted the show’s concept, noting some people ghost to get out of dangerous and abusive relationships. The show premieres on Sept. 10.

“I think Android Q is just ‘10’ because they can’t think of a Q dessert.” @TECHNINJASPEAKS, discussing the

name of Android’s latest operating system. Android had previously named its systems alphabetically after desserts — starting in 2009 with “Cupcake” and ending last year with “Pie.” But Android announced Thursday that its next system, which would’ve been Q, would simply be called Android 10.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
