Rick Perry — who pleaded not guilty Tuesday to felony abuse-of-power charges — had a lot on the line when he had his booking photo taken: Even if he beats the charges, there’s still that awkward arrest photo that will be floating around the Web. We decided to rank some famous political mug shots.

picture is not good, but he has two advantages: First, it’s not obviously a mug shot. And second, he’s dressed so casually it almost looks like a photo his wife took right after he got out of bed.
ANALYSIS: The ranking wouldn’t be complete without Jim “Wait, Is That Hair?” Traficant. It’s a brutal photo. But it didn’t do much harm: He almost collected enough petitions to run on the ballot for a House seat in 2010.
ANALYSIS: Blago
apparently stopped by the police station after going out for a jog. He looks tired, and the concrete wall behind him makes it clear he’s being photographed in a type of institution.

ANALYSIS: Perry’s a good-looking guy, but mug shots rarely do their subjects justice. Darker pictures always make subjects look more guilty, and that’s the case here. Perry’s near-smile expression doesn’t really help.
ANALYSIS: One of Edwards’ assets was that he took a good photo. His mug shot is typical in that regard, though the lighting is a bit harsh. But in the end he looks like a politician in a bad photo, not an accused criminal.
ANALYSIS: DeLay’s booking photo is the gold standard of political mug shots. It’s got the big grin and the absence of any you-are-in-a-policestation indicia. It’s like class-picture day on Capitol Hill.
