What’s the best new restaurant in all of America? Rose’s Luxury, an innovative eatery in Capitol Hill, says Bon Appetit. This is the first time in the “Hot Ten” list’s five-year history that D.C. won the top spot. We asked the magazine’s restaurant and drinks editor, Andrew Knowlton, why it took so darn long. S.D.
Restaurants in Philadelphia and New York got second and third place, respectively. How should we taunt those loser cities? Tell Philadelphia, “At least you still have your overwrought and overexposed cheese steak.” As for New York, tell them not to be so cocky next time. What made Rose’s Luxury stand out? Everyone there was having a good time. At the end of the day, even for the snobby food people like myself, all you really want is to have a good time at a restaurant and eat great food. What’s the best thing you ate
there? I usually say fried chicken has to be bone-on, but their boneless little thigh niblets with Knowlton the honey and the benne seeds is pretty remarkable. That guy’s a master fryer. He also does fried oysters with tzatziki and oyster juice in the sauce that are amazing. The lychee pork dish is also pretty incredible. You stir it all together and it gets this curry-like flavor.

THE DISTRICT The Internal Revenue Service has launched a probe of the president of a subsidized apartment complex in Southeast, according to a criminal summons and the building’s property manager. In the summons, the IRS demanded records related to Park Southern Apartments, a sprawling set of towers along D.C.’s southern border. The complex became the subject of scrutiny after a Washington Post report detailing its dilapidated conditions and its owner’s default on a $3 million city-backed loan. The IRS also demanded documents related to Rowena Joyce
Scott, a Democratic organizer and the president of the nonprofit that owns Park Southern. D.C. seized control of the property in June and this month asked a judge to oversee what would be an unprecedented court-supervised sale of the property, one of the city’s iconic affordable housing complexes and home to more than 700 residents. The property is plagued with a leaking roof, mold and rodent infestations. Its demise has sparked a conversation in the runup to November’s election about the city’s affordable housing problem. July jobless data grim Unemployment levels in D.C., which had been falling, remained flat in July at 7.4 percent, the Labor Department reported. In Virginia, the jobless rate crept up to 5.4 percent. THE DISTRICT For years, the grocery options were slim in neighborhoods near Union Station. The area was a “food desert,” a place where fresh food was tough to find. That’s hard to imagine today. As young professionals move in, grocery chains began racing to open new stores in the D.C. area. Neighborhoods like these are now ground zero in a fierce grocery store competition. With so many residents arriving from elsewhere, chains here have a chance to lure new customers. The Mall will soon be staring back at you The National Portrait Gallery has commissioned a work for the National Mall, a giant portrait made out of sand and soil. From the ground, it won’t look like much. But from up above, the lines will come together to create the image of a face. ( THE WASHINGTON POST/AP) Who is making this thing? The “facescape” will be created by Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada, a Cuban-American artist who uses buildings, billboards and beaches as his canvas. It will take over a 10-by-6-acre area between the World War II and Lincoln memorials.
How will he make it? Rodriguez-Gerada will construct it using GPS technology to determine where to place pegs that will become a guideline for the face. Then, with the help of construction companies, he will place 2,000 tons of sand and 800 tons of soil in spots needed to achieve the intended effect when viewed from above.
Who will it look like? Rodriguez-Gerada isn’t making the face of a historical figure. Instead, he photographed young men on the Mall and created a composite image inspired by their faces. It is called “Out of Many, One,” the translation of the Latin “E pluribus unum.”

Why it’s hard to find cheap rent D.C.’s stock of the most expensive units has increased by 71% since 2010 THE DISTRICT The Harper was almost full — just a couple one-bedrooms still open — but Max Friedman and Eden Turkheimer had options. “There’s a ton out there,” said Friedman, a 23-year-old commercial real estate broker with aviator sunglasses tucked into the collar of his button-down. Right now in D.C., childless 20-somethings with good jobs like Freidman and Turkheimer have a glut of options. But the choices for those a step or two down the economic ladder have severely diminished. How could it be that so much money is going into putting up apartments, and it’s still so hard to find a place to live for so many in the city? Economic forces in the city make it all too easy to supply housing for high-income urbanites, not the cheap kind that

once was plentiful in D.C. What’s more, even the ways in which D.C. harnesses the taxes from those luxury buildings — by subsidizing developers who build more affordable units — hasn’t filled the gap. The city’s stock of “Class A” apartments, which have luxury amenities, expanded from about 8,500 units at the end of 2010 to nearly 14,500 by end of June, an increase of 71 percent, according to Delta Associates. More than 11,000 more are in the pipeline. Meanwhile, the vacancy rate for older, less trendy “Class B” apartments remained extremely low from 2010 through 2014; it’s now at 3 percent, while the Class A vacancy rate has risen to 4.5 percent. In other words, there are plenty of new homes in the city, but fewer options for those who
are strapped, a trend that also is playing out in other major U.S. cities. After a short dry period during the recession, builders raced back into the market with an almost manic intensity — mostly geared toward upwardly-mobile urbanites with healthy incomes and no children to suck it all away. The demand, they’d been told, was insatiable: Cities are

They’re not always available when they’re needed most. In 2008 and 2009, the fund was essentially empty at a time when low-cost units were disappearing rapidly. Even when subsidies are available, not many builders have the patience or expertise to work with them. The city’s housing fund has money now, but the process for getting it out the door takes time and energy. Meanwhile, the very fact that a project is subsidized makes it a target for opposition from communities that don’t want lowincome people next door. Other approaches to incentivize building of relatively inexpensive units require huge political lift and haven’t been successful.
back in vogue, and D.C. was as hot as it got. So when Turkheimer and Friedman went house hunting on a recent Friday afternoon, they had choices aplenty. When the couple decided to move in together, they figured they could afford about $2,500 per month for a one bedroom with their combined income. For their last stop of the day, Friedman and Turkheimer swung by the CityMarket at O Street, a shining new complex with a grocery store, hotel and the sleek, modern front desk with a suited concierge now typical of the city’s new developments. It’s got everything — not to mention a month’s free rent — but Friedman still quibbles with the slightly less buzzy location. “There’s just not as much to do over there,” he says later. “The surrounding area is still very much residential.” It’s no problem, though, really. Islamic State claims it beheaded U.S. journalist James Foley disappeared in Syria in Nov. 2012; militants say death is retaliation for U.S. airstrikes WASHINGTON The Islamic State militant group claimed Tuesday to have beheaded an American photojournalist in retaliation for U.S. airstrikes in Iraq. A video released online purported to show the execution of James Foley after he recited a statement in which he called the U.S. government “my real killers.” A second prisoner, said to be Steven Joel Sotloff — like Foley an American journalist who disappeared while covering Syria’s civil war — then appears in the video. The masked executioner, speaking with what sounds like

a British accent, identifies Sotloff and says that “the life of this American citizen, Obama, depends on your next decision.” U.S. intelligence officials said they were still evaluating the video and could not immediately authenticate it. Foley was working in Syria for the Boston-based news website GlobalPost when he disappeared in November 2012. GlobalPost co-founder Charles Sennott said that they were preparing a statement. A woman who answered the phone at the home of Foley’s parents declined to comment. A Facebook page devoted to Foley’s freedom said: “We know
that many of you are looking for confirmation or answers. Please be patient until we all have more information, and keep the Foleys in your thoughts and prayers.” Sotloff, a freelancer who worked for several news organizations, disappeared in Syria in August 2013. In a separate message posted by the Islamic State, the group warned Monday that it would attack Americans “in any place” in response to airstrikes. “We will drown all of you in blood,” it said. The Tuesday video of Foley included a clip of President Barack Obama’s Aug. 7 announcement that he had authorized U.S. airstrikes against Islamic State fighters in Iraq.
There’s bad news for fans of Nutella, the chocolaty hazelnut spread. Poor weather in Turkey, the world’s largest producer of hazelnuts, is causing a major shortage of the nuts. The Turkish industry, which is responsible for growing some 70 percent of the world’s hazelnuts, is facing what could be a hazelnut crop that’s more than 30 percent below original expectations, according to the Guardian. As a result, the price of hazelnuts has spiked by more than 60 percent so far this year and more than doubled since last fall. Nutella-maker Ferrero Group now buys as much as a quarter of the world’s hazelnuts, and relies heavily on Turkey to supply the 50 hazelnuts it takes to produce each 13-ounce jar of Nutella. Border militias worry police MISSION, TEXAS On a recent moonlit night, Border Patrol agents began rounding up eight immigrants hiding in and around a canal near the Rio Grande. A state trooper soon arrived to help. Then out of the darkness emerged seven more armed men in fatigues. Agents assumed the camouflaged crew that joined in pulling the immigrants from the canal’s milky green waters was a tactical unit from the Texas Department of Public Safety. Only later did
they learn that the men belonged to the Texas Militia, a group that dresses like a SWAT team and carries weapons but has no law-enforcement training or authority of any kind. The situation ended peacefully. But the episode was unsettling enough for the Border Patrol to circulate an “issue paper” warning other agents. The presence of armed militia members working on their own in the Rio Grande Valley — known for human smuggling,
drug smuggling and illegal immigration — has added one more variable to an already complex and tense situation. “How do they identify themselves? Do they have badges? How do we know who they are?” asked J.P. Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Hidalgo County, Texas, Sheriff’s Office. “If they’re all just dressed in camos, it’s kind of hard to distinguish whether they’re law enforcement or not. ... Many factions fill the streets of Ferguson Protesters have included the peaceful, the looters and the ‘militants’ FERGUSON, MO. On one corner of a stretch of West Florissant Avenue, the epicenter of ongoing protests, young men pull dark scarves up over their mouths and lob molotov cocktails at police from behind makeshift barricades. They call the gasfilled bottles “poor man’s bombs.” The young men yell expletives and, with a rebel’s bravado, speak about securing justice for Michael Brown, the black teen fatally shot Aug. 9 by a white police officer, “by any means necessary.” They are known here as “the militants” — a faction inhabiting the hard-core end of a spectrum that includes online organizers and opportunistic looters — and their numbers have been growing along with the severity of their tactics since the shooting. Each evening, hundreds gather along West Florissant in what has become the most visible and perilous ritual of this St. Louis
suburb’s days of frustration following Brown’s death. Dozens have been arrested, many injured by tear-gas canisters and rubber bullets fired by a police force dressed in riot gear. But the demonstrators are as diverse as their grievances — and in their methods of addressing them. Some of the men are from the area. Others have arrived from Chicago, Detroit, Brooklyn and elsewhere. Their leaders say they are ready to fight, some with guns in hand. “This is not the time for no peace,” said a 27-year-old from Chicago. “We are jobless men, and this is our job now — getting justice. If that means violence, that’s OK by me. They’ve been doing this to us for years.” The militants are just one faction of many that have filled Ferguson’s streets. There is also a group of “peaceful protesters” that congregates

Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama went to Philadelphia to decry the “racial stalemate we’ve been stuck in for years.” Over time, he said, such wounds, rooted in America’s painful history on race, can be healed. Six years later, the stalemate suddenly seems more entrenched than ever. As Obama pleads for calm and understanding in Ferguson, Mo., he’s struggling to determine what role — if any — the nation’s first black president can play in defusing the crisis. Obama has avoided personalizing this latest bout of racial friction. Unlike in 2013, when Obama declared that slain teen Trayvon Martin “could have been me,” Obama has been careful not to describe Michael Brown’s death through the lens of his own experience as an African-American. As Obama sought to strike the appropriate tone Monday, he appeared to be trapped between the need, as president, to stand up for the government’s right to ensure law and order, and the inclination, as an AfricanAmerican, to empathize with those who say the killing of an unarmed black man just goes to show how blacks are treated differently by police. Why are they angry? Khan alleges that last year’s elections, in which Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-N won the majority of seats in Parliament, were rife with fraud. Qadri accuses Sharif of being too slow in implementing political and economic reforms.
TECHNOLOGY Behold the cascade of baby photos, the flood of funny kid anecdotes and the steady stream of school milestones on Facebook. It all makes Sonia Rao, a stayat-home mother of a 1-year-old, “a little uncomfortable.” “I just have a vague discomfort having her photograph out there for anyone to look at,” Rao says. At a time when just about everyone and their mother — father, grandmother and aunt — is intent on publicizing the newest generation’s early years on social media, an increasing number of parents like Rao are bucking the trend by keeping their children’s photos and identities off the Internet. Reasons for the baby blackout vary. Some parents have privacy and safety concerns. Others worry about what companies might do with their child’s image and data. Some simply do it out of respect for their kids’ autonomy before they are old enough to make decisions for themselves. “I have a no-tolerance policy,” says Scott Steinberg, a St. Louisbased consultant who has 4,800 Facebook friends. Steinberg says he shares no photos or information about his child. “If I don’t want somebody to know about my child, to take an active interest in them, to recognize them in

a city street … the easiest way to do that is to not have any identifying information out about them.” Facebook encourages parents to use the site’s privacy setting if they want to limit who can see their photos and other posts. But that’s not enough for some users.
Parents Josh Furman and his wife, Alisha Klapholz, are “very protective” of their newborn. The Silver Spring, Md., couple believe it’s in their daughter’s best interest to limit her Internet presence for as long as possible. As such, they haven’t posted her legal
name on Facebook and don’t post photos of her. “In 2014, we sort of feel like the repercussions of sharing private data are totally unpredictable,” Furman says. Some parents look back to their own childhoods, when they were able to make mistakes without evidence of those blunders living on — forever — online. After his son was born, Wasim Ahmad bought the website domain with his son’s name. “I’m going to make it a private website with a password so family can log in” to see updates, he says. “When he gets old enough, I’ll probably give him the keys.” People have shared baby photos since the dawn of the camera, and stories about kids’ shenanigans long before that. Parents who decide to keep photos of their children off social media say they still want to share those things, but they are bothered by the idea of online permanence. “I think my parents told embarrassing stories about me as a child … no doubt,” mom Amy Heinz says. “But those can’t be brought back up now — or if they are, it’s to a small audience and not the whole world.” BARBARA ORTUTAY (AP)

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III remains at risk after resisting advice from new coach Jay Gruden about running and sliding. The third-year passer hits the deck worse than Charlie Brown. On three scampers during Monday’s 24-23 victory over Cleveland, Griffin nearly turned an ankle going down on one, was hit twice on another and managed a weak sliding attempt on the third. Griffin has been hurt in the past while scrambling, and
he will surely suffer another major injury if he continues to run recklessly. “I got caught in an awkward situation on the first one. I tried to slide. It was a bad attempt at a slide,” Griffin said. “And then on their sideline, I was in a situation there where I thought I was going to be able to get out of bounds, and [the defender] was running out of bounds with [tight end] Jordan Reed and he came back in. I had to protect myself, so that’s why I put my shoulder down. And then my third attempt was very successful. I got down and got out of harm’s way.” “Harm’s way” is exactly why Gruden wants Griffin

The Heisman Trophy winner has to be the dynamic playmaker that led the Redskins to draft him second overall in 2012. Griffin is dangerous when he moves around; it’s just the Redskins don’t want him exposed too often and certainly not in a meaningless preseason game.

“He has a habit in his career of being able to get himself out of predicaments with his speed and his athleticism,” Gruden said. “He has to pick his shots and learn how to get down a little better.” Griffin’s biggest problem when sliding is he doesn’t turn his cleats horizontally, so he risks having them catch the turf and cause an injury. He also waits too long before sliding — trying to pick up an extra yard or two before making his awkward attempt. “It’s going to continually be a work in progress focusing on getting down in those situations, knowing when to fight for extra yards and when not to,” Griffin said after Monday’s game. “The fans have nothing to worry about there. The Nationals have the best record in the NL after putting together a streak of walk-off wins NATIONALS Adam LaRoche was asked if he enjoyed the nail-biting thrillers the Nationals have been a part of over the past week. He turned his head and gave a matter-offact reply. “No,” he said. “Not at all.” Winners of seven in a row heading into Tuesday night’s game against Arizona, the Nationals have found ways to win close contests. Five of those games were decided by one run. Washington won the final three games of this streak in walk-off fashion, with Adam LaRoche belting a home run in Monday’s 11th-inning 5-4 thriller
over the Diamondbacks. The Nationals are beginning to show some resiliency with the season beginning to wind down. “We feel like we can win every game, even if we’re down late,” starter Jordan Zimmermann said. “These last couple of games have been a roller-coaster ride. We’re up, we’re down. We end up coming back and winning it. We have a good ball club, and we know we’re going to score runs.” A bit of a 2012 feel has crept in with this year’s group as the Nationals chase their second division title in three years. In that season, Washington had an eight-game winning streak in

August, though only three of those games were decided by one run. In 2012, Washington won 10 games with walk-offs. This year, the team has won seven that way. “It builds a lot of character, I know that,” LaRoche said. “You get into late innings, extra innings and see a bunch of starting pitchers on the bench, and guys down there, pulling for each other. It helps to win those close games.” The past few days may have put manager Matt Williams on edge a bit, but he’ll gladly take these narrow victories. “Unconventional, by every stretch of the imagination,” Williams said. “It’s a fantastic trait that they never give up.”
Ohio State says quarterback Braxton Miller will miss the 2014 season after reinjuring his throwing shoulder. Miller, a two-time Big Ten player of the year, left practice in pain Monday after making a throw. Ohio State said Tuesday that Miller will require surgery. It’s a huge blow to the nation’s No. 5 team. The senior and threeyear starter partially tore the labrum in his right shoulder in a loss to Clemson at the Orange Bowl. He had surgery, did not face contact in spring practice and was held out of several practices this month due to soreness. Redshirt freshman J.T. MARKET TRENDS “Dear Seller,” began the letter from home buyers Monica Vohra and Vishal Patel to seller Tarpley Long. “We have been searching for the perfect place for over a year. This weekend we had the privilege of touring your home, and we instantly fell in love.” It was a simple foray into a fierce competition. Having already lost out on three houses in bidding wars over the course of more than a year, Vohra and Patel, both 32, wanted a way to make their offer stand out on the home they’d fallen for, a 1906 town house in LeDroit Park. Anticipating dueling offers, they decided to address the seller directly. “We wanted her to know who we were,” Vohra says, “and to know that living in this home … would be an integral part of our future.” Writing letters to sellers has proven fairly common in pockets of the country with competitive real estate markets. According to a Redfin report from earlier this year, including a letter to the seller increased a buyer’s success rate by approximately 9 percent.

In Washington last year, Redfin reported, nearly 35 percent of all winning offers did so. Nathan Guggenheim, one of the two Washington Fine Properties real estate agents who represented Vohra and Patel, says he’s recommended his buyers write letters at various times over the eight and a half years he has worked in the business. Besides Vohra and Patel’s offer, Guggenheim recently facilitated a buyer’s purchase of a house in Chevy Chase, D.C., that also included a letter. The buyer, who’d noticed that the seller had Stanford University decor, wanted to share that she was an alumnus. It worked — turns out the seller went to Stanford, too. “I think there’s a direct correlation between the intensity
in the market and these types of strategies,” Guggenheim says. “[The strategy] really boils down to only being effective where sellers have pride in or a personal connection to their home.” That was the case with Vohra and Patel’s offer, and Long’s reception of their letter. Long had bought the three-bedroom, three-bath, two-unit house in 2009, when it “needed tender loving care and attention,” in Long’s words. DIY house love letters Think writing to the seller might help you seal the deal on your dream home? Read on for a few tips to help in crafting your letter. K.A. Introduce yourself. Many sellers are curious about who you are and why you’re interested in their home. Give them a few details that might help sway the odds in your favor. Some common themes that real estate experts say have worked: emphasizing your connection (desired or established) to the community, describing your family or plans for one, and explaining your appreciation for the home’s history (if it has an interesting past). Focus on the positives. Whether it’s a landscaped backyard or a one-of-a-kind floor plan, write about the house’s best assets and why you love them. Leave out dislikes.
Be honest. A letter “should only be something you do if you’re genuine, and if you’re communicating your truthful intentions for the home,” says Nathan Guggenheim, a real estate agent with Washington Fine Properties (wfp.com). If you only want to buy a house to tear it down and rebuild a multifamily property, you might not want to reveal that (lest you turn off an emotionally attached seller). In fact, in that instance, if you care at all about karma, it may be better not to write a letter in the first place. Witnessing that sort of betrayal down the road can be “gut-wrenching for a seller,” Guggenheim says.

Vohra decided to write a letter — a handwritten letter, at that. It covered their backgrounds and revealed the fact that the couple had recently gotten engaged and wanted to start a family in D.C. Long read the highest offer first, then turned to Vohra and Patel’s letter. “It touched me deeply; it resonated with me,” she says. “I was visualizing them in the house.” Suddenly, it wasn’t about the money (although Long admits that had Vohra and Patel’s offer been among the bottom few, she might not have accepted it). After reading the third offer, Long stopped — she says she already knew she wanted Vohra and Patel to have her house. Vohra and Patel closed in June for $910,500. Before the closing, they met with Long a few times to learn more about the home’s history. All three continue to stay in touch — it’s a “very friendly” relationship, Patel says. IT’S NOT QUITE A POTATO-POTAHTO SITUATION when discussing Takoma Park, Md., and Takoma, D.C. Takoma Park, you see, is a city in Maryland bordered roughly by Piney Branch Road to the west, Flower Avenue and Carroll Avenue to the north, University Boulevard and New Hampshire Avenue to the east and Eastern Avenue to the south. Takoma Park once spilled from Maryland into the District, but now the District side is a separate neighborhood known as just “Takoma.” It’s loosely bounded by Eastern Avenue to the north, Second and Third streets to the east, Tuckerman Street to the south and Georgia Avenue to the west. Physical locations aside, the neighborhoods differ in practical aspects: Life in Montgomery County, for example, comes with higher taxes and higher-rated schools. Still, in many ways, the two feel like one community, sharing a Metro station and a charming town center filled with indie shops, as well as a hippie history that lingers today. Getting around
The Takoma stop on Metro’s Red Line straddles the D.C.-Maryland border. Eight Montgomery Country Ride-On bus routes (3, 12, 13, 14, 16, 18, 24 and 25) stop at the station, and D.C. Metro buses (52, 53, 54, 62, 63, K2) pass through as well. Five Capital Bikeshare stations dot the neighborhood.
Housing options The area offers a breadth of architectural styles, including early Victorians, arts-and-crafts bungalows, Cape Cods and Colonials — and even, on the outskirts, ramblers. Median house sale prices in Takoma Park and Takoma are around CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

WORTH THE TRIP
Top of the pops WHAT’S MORE REFRESHING THAN A FRIGID, FRUITY ICE POP? The syrupy concoctions filled with artificial flavorings, however, have lost
their appeal. That’s why many local ice pop artisans are letting farmers markets inspire them, offering icy treats that capitalize on the season’s bounty of fresh fruit, herbs and spices. Here are five area folks who are bringing the District an alternative to the Popsicle of yesteryear with their fresh cream- or water-based ice pops and paletas, the Latin American version. Business partners Roger Horowitz and Brian Sykora opened the market in 2012. One of their earliest failed experiments, Horowitz says, was an overspiced pineapple chili pop. “We’ve since learned about proportions.” Among the most popular seasonal flavors, Horowitz says, are strawberry ginger lemonade, cookies and cream, and peach hibiscus.
Sometime around 2000, John Bolten wrote a list of ideas for startups. Among them: turning tea into ice pops. Ten years later, his wife, Allison, found the list and helped turn the idea into reality while expanding the variety. Their flavors include apple pie (made with Granny Smith apples), pear mint and Key lime pie, made with Greek yogurt and chunks of gingersnap crust.
Traveling through Richmond in 2011, Corey Ramsden came across La Michoacana, an ice cream parlor that sold paletas. “I hadn’t seen anything like that in the D.C. area,” Ramsden says. He teamed up with the shop to bring the pops to the area and rebranded them as Hill Pops, which formally launched later that year with flavors like chili mango and pistachio.
This shop is known for its creamy custards, made by owner Elizabeth Davis. Davis began selling ice pops five years ago after acquiring a machine that makes 88 pops in 15 minutes. “When you freeze them fast, it keeps any particulate matter from settling down,” she says. The Mexican chocolate pop is chai-like, while the blackcurrant is tart and berry-laced.
When Maria Romano moved to the U.S. from her native Mexico City six years ago, she missed a particular taste of home. “In Mexico, we have a paletas shop on every corner,” Romano says. So she decided to bring her culture here. Many of WhimPop’s flavors honor Romano’s Mexican heritage, like the tamarind pop, the lime pop and the cucumber chili pop.

The best time to visit this new-ish coffee shop is on Saturday mornings when it hosts the Purcellville Community Market. Located just off the Washington & Old Dominion bike trail in a Victorian-style house, LoCo Joe is best known for its pour-over coffees and latte art. “People look at the cappuccinos and say, ‘It’s so pretty I don’t want to drink it,’ ” owner Juanita Tool says.

Shark Week earns high ratings among women Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, which ended on Saturday, attracted the network’s highest audience ever among women ages 18-49, Deadline reported. The special, in its 27th year, also took the No. 1 spot in prime time for the week in men 18-49, but that demo was also down from last year. Shark Week’s overall ratings also dipped slightly, averaging 2.48 million primetime viewers compared to last year’s 2.56 million.

The Neurology Department at The George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of an investigational medication for Post-Traumatic Neuropathic Pain. Neuropathic (nerve) pain is often reported as a stabbing, shooting or burning type pain. Your participation in this study may or may not help your pain. To qualify, you must meet the following as well as other study criteria: ● You must be at least 18 years of age ● Have had chronic neuropathic pain for at least 6 months after a physical trauma (burn, fall, motor vehicle accident, sports injury etc.) or surgery If you do qualify to participate and choose to do so, involvement would be for about 17 weeks and would include up to 7 visits to the study center. Parents Television Council blasts MTV VMA’s content The Parents Television Council has written a letter to MTV, warning against the “sexually charged” content of last year’s Video Music Awards, including Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke’s twerk-filled display, above, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter. Couric insisted on a two-week position, hoping it would promote her role as “global news anchor” at Yahoo. When NBC chiefs refused, Couric turned down the gig. According to TMZ, Julianne Hough is close to a deal to return to “Dancing With the Stars” as a judge. Hough was a dancer on the competition show until 2009, when she left to pursue a career in acting. She has since starred in the films “Footloose,” “Burlesque,” “Rock of Ages” and “Safe Haven.” Hough plans to continue acting in addition to the judging job. (EXPRESS)
