Police say a California woman was cited after climbing into the giraffe exhibit at a Madison, Wisc., zoo and getting kicked in the face. A police report says 24-year-old Amanda Hall of San Luis Obispo, Calif., climbed over the fence at the Henry Vilas Zoo on Saturday. A 12-foot-tall giraffe named Wally gave Hall a lick, then turned and kicked her in the face. Police ticketed Hall for harassment of zoo animals, which has a fine of $686. (AP)

Spanish police on Friday said they arrested a woman who landed at Madrid’s international airport with 3.7 pounds of cocaine hidden in her breast implants. Narcotics agents grew suspicious when the Venezuelan woman exhibited strange behavior during a routine screening of passengers who had just arrived from Colombia. This Saturday, Bao Bao the panda cub turns 1. The National Zoo is throwing a big party in her honor, but it may not have quite the turnout as her older brother’s first birthday in 2006. “Bao Bao is a big deal, but, you know, Tai Shan was the first,” says panda keeper Nicole MacCorkle. Tai Shan was also more sheltered than his sister. “We did a lot more cub-proofing, putting bales of hay under the trees in case he fell,” MacCorkle says. “It’s like when people have every single outlet covered with the first baby and not so much with their second.” Their mom, Mei Xiang, seems mellower this time around, too. Perhaps as a result, Bao Bao has turned out to be a more chill panda than Tai Shan. S.D.

Bao Bao VOCABULARY

BACKSTORY: D.C. residents have

enjoyed 20 (nearly) rain-free weekends in a row, according to The Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang. A measly 0.17 inches fell during the day on weekends over the past four months. R.S.

Tai Shan

Loves her Jolly Ball

TOY OF CHOICE

Bao Bao doesn’t always answer her mother’s calls. “She just keeps doing what she’s doing,” says panda keeper Laurie Thompson.

RELATIONSHIP TO MEI XIANG

Tai Shan tended to stay closer to his mother and came running when she called.

Bao Bao rarely snaps or growls at the keepers and ignores them as they work in the yard — probably because she’s been exposed to humans since she was very young. Keepers maintained a more handsoff approach with her older brother.

ATTITUDE TOWARD HUMANS IN THEIR PERSONAL SPACE

Tai Shan was more likely to act aggressively toward keepers, and he kept close tabs on them as they worked in his habitat. “He’d follow us all around the yard,” Thompson says.

Bao Bao tends to hit developmental milestones, such as taking her first steps, after the keepers have left for the day.

PREFERRED ACTIVITY TIME

Tai Shan was more frolicsome than his sister during regular zoo hours.

‘weekend drought’ DEFINITION: A prolonged period without rainfall on weekend days.

After prosecutors presented nearly three weeks of testimony in the corruption trial of Bob McDonnell and his wife, lawyers for Virginia’s former governor opened their defense Monday with testimony that portrayed Maureen, above, badly. (AP/ T WP) Former secretary of state: Maureen was ‘very diva-ish’

Staff worried former first lady might be mentally ill

Former Secretary of State Janet Vestal Kelly burst into tears while describing her difficult interactions with Maureen during McDonnell’s 2009 campaign for governor. “She was very difficult, very demanding, very diva-ish,” Kelly said. “She would exaggerate, embellish.”

About six months into the administration, Kelly said, Maureen’s chief of staff came to her saying she was “really worried” about her boss. “There were concerns that she was suffering from mental illness,” Kelly said.

Mansion staff threatened to resign en masse in a letter In 2012, Kelly testified, the entire staff at the governor’s mansion drafted a mass resignation letter, which they intended to deliver to Maureen. It deplored the “tension that permeates this building at all times” and said staffers felt like their mere presence was an “inconvenience.”

Bob came across a lot better than his wife Despite the unflattering portrait of Maureen, Kelly and a series of cabinet secretaries offered testimony that bolstered the governor’s defense. They said McDonnell did not offer special treatment to businessman Jonnie Williams Sr. in exchange for gifts — prosecutors’ central contention.

“This is the latest in a series of desperate stunts and a sign of a campaign that continues to be in panic mode.” JOAQUIN McPEEK, Bowser’s spokesman, on Young’s remarks. The City Paper reported that McPeek also brushed off a jab from mayoral hopeful Carol Schwartz that incorrectly stated she was in Martha’s Vineyard.

D.C. wants more time on gun ruling The Second Amendment doesn’t include an “unalloyed right” to carry guns in public, D.C. officials argued in a court pleading filed Monday seeking more time before a ruling takes effect overturning the city’s ban on carrying handguns in public. It was the first hint of arguments D.C. might make should authorities decide to fight the ruling in court. (TWP)

Corcoran merger approved Judge OKs the plan to partner with GWU and National Gallery THE DISTRICT One of the nation’s oldest museums and its art college will be allowed to merge with two larger institutions, effectively dissolving one of the few independent art galleries in the nation’s capital, a judge ruled Monday. The ruling by District of Columbia Superior Court Judge Robert Okun determines the future of the Corcoran Gallery of

Art and its college after years of financial and managerial trouble. The Corcoran will now merge the college and museum into George Washington University and the National Gallery of Art, respectively. The Corcoran will become an art school within the larger university. A group of students and faculty fought the merger, arguing the Corcoran could be saved with better leadership, philanthropic support or a better partnership model. Witnesses in the court case described an organization in limbo with a broken fundraising

operation and struggling board. Okun had to decide whether to allow a break in the Corcoran’s 1869 deed of trust to allow for the merger. “This court finds it painful to issue an order that effectively dissolves the Corcoran as an independent entity,” Okun wrote. “But this court would find it even more painful to deny the relief requested and allow the Corcoran to face its likely demise — the likely dissolution of the college, the closing of the gallery, and the dispersal of the gallery’s entire collection.” BRETT ZONGKER (AP)

They lived together at the National Zoo at the time of Rusty’s dramatic escape but were moved to the Smithsonian’s Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Va., about six months later to give them a quieter place to breed (another famous panda was attracting too many gawking crowds). Boosted by two days of U.S. airstrikes, Kurdish forces said Monday they had wrested back control of the Mosul Dam, the country’s largest dam, from militants of the extremist Islamic State group, though Islamic State militants earlier denied the claim. The retaking of the dam would mark the first major victory for the Iraqi and Kurdish forces since U.S. airstrikes began earlier this month. (AP)

Cianci adviser Charles Mansolillo acknowledged the label could be misunderstood. (AP)

The new feature has been tested for about a month, Mashable reported. “We are running a small test which shows the text ‘[Satire]’ in front of links to satirical articles in the related articles unit in News Feed. While returning from Asia, Pope Francis said he may visit D.C. next year.

Pope condones using force in Iraq ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE Pope Francis on Monday endorsed the use of force to stop Islamic militants from attacking religious minorities in Iraq but said the international community — and not just one country — should decide how to intervene. “One nation alone cannot judge how you stop this, how you stop an unjust aggressor,” he said. Francis also said he and his advisers were considering whether he might go to northern Iraq himself to show solidarity with the country’s persecuted Christians. But he said he was holding off for now on a decision. His comments were significant because the Vatican has vehemently opposed any military intervention in recent years, with St. John Paul II actively trying

to head off the Iraq war in 2003 and Francis himself staging a global prayer and fast for peace when the U.S. was threatening airstrikes on Syria last year. But the Vatican has been increasingly showing support for military intervention in Iraq, given that Christians are being directly targeted because of their faith and that ancient Christian communities have been emptied by the extremists’ onslaught. In other comments to journalists returning from South Korea, Francis confirmed he hoped to travel to the United States in September 2015 for a possible three-city tour: to attend a family rally in Philadelphia and to address Congress in Washington and the United Nations in New York. How did Michael Brown die? AG Holder criticizes information drip from police as two autopsies describe fatal shots

Obama calls for calm President Barack Obama talked about the tense situation in Ferguson, calling for calm and peace rather than anger and violence. “Let’s seek to heal rather than to wound each other,” he said. Obama said that while most protesters are acting peacefully, those who are looting or attacking police are only raising tensions. But, he said, there is no excuse for excessive force by police.

that the teen had marijuana in his system when he was shot, as the county’s autopsy claimed. A third autopsy was to be done Monday by a Pentagon medical examiner at Holder’s direction. The multiple and competing autopsies point to the highly unusual nature of the investigation into Brown’s death. It will be up to local prosecutors and Justice Department officials to sift through the various findings. A grand jury could begin hearing evidence as early as Wednesday to determine whether Wilson should be charged, a spokesman for St. Louis County’s prosecuting attorney said. Brown’s family requested the independent autopsy because “they did not want to rely on the same institution that executed their son in full daylight,” Crump said. “They could not trust what would be put in the reports.” Baden, a medical examiner who was featured in the HBO

FERGUSON, MO. Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday criticized the way information regarding the fatal police shooting of an unarmed black teenager has been released, but he asked for patience as the Department of Justice conducts its own civil rights investigation. “The selective release of sensitive information that we have seen in this case so far is troubling to me,” said Holder in a statement. “No matter how others pursue their own separate inquiries, the Justice Department is resolved to preserve the integrity of its investigation.” The criticism from Holder — who will travel to Ferguson on Wednesday to meet with FBI agents and prosecutors — came as new details emerged Monday, part of a slow trickle of information in the days since Aug. 9 when Michael Brown was shot and killed in Ferguson, Mo., by Officer Darren Wilson. Attorneys for Brown’s family released information Monday from an independent autopsy they requested, which they said showed that Brown was trying to surrender when he was killed. Meanwhile, a source close to the St. Louis County investigation into the shooting said Brown was shot six times from the front. Benjamin Crump, an attorney for Brown’s family, said the results of the autopsy performed by St. Louis County and released to the state Friday “sound consistent” with the autopsy requested by the family and done Sunday by forensic pathologists Michael Baden and Shawn Parcells. But Crump said he was unaware

Baden said his preliminary autopsy revealed there were no signs of struggle between Brown and the officer, that Brown was shot at least six times, including twice in the head, and that all of Brown’s gunshot wounds were

survivable except one from a bullet that entered at the top of his head and went through his brain. He said there was no gunshot residue on Brown’s skin, which would determine how far away the shots were fired, but emphasized that he did not have access to Brown’s clothing and that it was possible the residue could be on it. Daryl Parks, another lawyer for the family, said the results supported the contention of Brown’s family that he was killed as he was trying to surrender. “The killer shot hit Mr. Brown at the apex of his head,” Parks said. “There was a second round near his hairline, which went in and came out. This supports what witnesses said: He tried to surrender. Why would he be shot in the top of his head? Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon lifted the overnight curfew he had imposed on Ferguson, saying the imminent arrival of the National Guard, which he mobilized, will help restore order. Nixon had ordered the midnight-to-5 a.m. restrictions two days earlier after a week of clashes between demonstrators and police.

Rights group dispatched In an unusual move for the global rights organization, Amnesty International dispatched a delegation of observers and organizers to Ferguson late last week — the first deployment of its kind by Amnesty within the United States, the organization said.

Militarization questioned Rep. William “Lacy” Clay, D-Mo., said he will meet with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to push for changes to the Pentagon’s Excess Property Program, which has supplied local police departments with billions of dollars in military-grade equipment. The program has generated bipartisan complaints about the militarization of police in places like St. Louis County, where Ferguson protesters have been confronted by armored vehicles and police wearing body armor and wielding assault rifles. THREE POINTERS

JOE SARGENT (GETTY IMAGES)

Getting hot in August

Entering Monday’s game, Rafael Soriano had allowed 10 runs in his past 11⅔ innings.

Sticking with Soriano Despite the closer’s recent struggles, Williams says the veteran is not losing his job NATIONALS After a fantastic first half of the season, Nationals closer Rafael Soriano hasn’t been the same in the second half. His recent rough stretch and struggles with command have raised questions for manager Matt Williams. After Sunday’s blown save, Soriano’s third since the All-Star break, however, Williams backed his closer. “He’s been our closer all year and I don’t see that changing as of right now,” Williams said. “He’s been up a lot recently, pitching a lot of games, and hopefully the games don’t present themselves like that and we can give him some rest and give him a chance to cool down a little bit and kick back. … It’s just been a

little off, that’s all.” The manager said he might reshuffle the bullpen so that Soriano pitches in situations with less pressure to allow the righthander to iron out his issues. Even though Soriano was pitching in his fourth game in five days on Sunday, he said after the game that he felt “great.” “For every pitch that I throw, it be unbelievable,” he added. “Never happen before like that. I feel bad because [Doug] Fister, he throw a great game. He supposed to win that game. To me, I think I feel bad for him.” Entering Monday’s game, Soriano had allowed 10 runs over 112/3 innings since the All-Star break. Still, he had 29 saves this season and a 2.59 ERA.

Nats bounce back Rafael Soriano blew his third save since the All-Star break Sunday, but the Nationals went on to win two of those games. On Sunday, Scott Hairston hit a game-winning sacrifice fly in the 11th in a 6-5 victory over the Pirates, and on July 20 Jayson Werth hit an RBI double in the ninth vs. the Brewers — giving Soriano the win. (EXPRESS)

“He’s … done a great job for us,” Williams said. “Lately it hasn’t been what he wants but we’ve got to give him a chance to get out of that inning.” After Sunday’s game, shortstop Ian Desmond defended Soriano. “Soriano has pitche[d] his

butt off for us all year,” Desmond wrote on Twitter. “I’d take him in the 9th any day of the week. All the booing tonight was ridiculous.” All relievers have rough patches and Soriano is in the midst of his worst of the season. In fact, the worst month of his career is traditionally August (a career 3.53 ERA). Lately, his command is off — he has missed the plate and left fastballs up too often — and his slider has been ineffective. “The last three or four games I don’t be comfortable,” Soriano said. “It not be too easy for me. It happens sometimes. This year, at home, I think it’s the second time that happened to me.” JAMES WAGNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Nationals righty Doug Fister didn’t allow an earned run for a third straight start Sunday, improving his ERA in August to 0.64. Here are a few other pitchers who have heated up. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

3 Phil Hughes Minnesota Twins

The righty entered August on a three-game losing streak, but this month he’s 3-0 with a 1.33 ERA, allowing just one run in each start.

2 Madison Bumgarner San Francisco Giants

In 24 innings pitched in August, the left-hander has walked just one hitter. He has a 1.50 ERA and a 0.58 WHIP this month.

1 Max Scherzer Detroit Tigers

The reigning AL Cy Young winner is 6-1 with a 1.78 ERA in his past 10 starts and has struck out 25 batters in his past two outings.

Locally, tickets for William & Mary’s visit to Virginia Tech start at $25, while tickets for Virginia’s opener vs. No. 7 UCLA start at $32. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Rafael Nadal won’t defend his U.S. Open title because of a wrist injury.

Nadal withdraws from U.S. Open TENNIS Reigning champion Rafael Nadal pulled out of the U.S. Open because of an injury for the second time in three years Monday, leaving Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer as the men to beat at the year’s last Grand Slam tournament. Nadal announced his withdrawal, blamed on a bad right wrist, one week before play begins at Flushing Meadows in New York. “I am sure you understand that it is a very tough moment for me since it is a tournament I love and where I have great memories from fans, the night matches, so many things,” a posting on Nadal’s Facebook page read. The second-ranked Nadal plays left-handed, but he uses a two-handed backhand. The 14-time major champion was hurt July 29 while practicing

on his home island of Mallorca, Spain, ahead of the North American hard-court circuit. The next day, Nadal announced he needed to wear a cast on his wrist for two to three weeks and would be sitting out tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati. The 28-year-old Spaniard also said at that time he expected to return for the U.S. Open. Instead, he’s the fourth man in the Open era, which began in 1968, to decline to try to defend his U.S. Open title. The others were Ken Rosewall in 1971, Pete Sampras in 2003 and Juan Martin del Potro in 2010. Del Potro also is out of this year’s U.S. Open after wrist surgery in March. Nadal is 44-8 with four titles in 2014, including his record ninth French Open trophy in June.

Ice bucket challenge raises millions for ALS

After a week of viral videos of everyone from Dale Earnhardt Jr. to LeBron James doing the stunt, the ALS Association announced Monday that it has received $15.6 million, an increase from $1.8 million given over the same period (July 29–Aug. 18) a year ago. That translates to 307,598 new donors, according to ALS Association President and CEO Barbara J. Newhouse.

What will the money go to?

SCHOOL OF CONTINUING AND PROFESSIONAL STUDIES

“I know that many people are wondering what the ALS Association is going to do with these donations, and my answer is this: invest prudently in helping people with ALS and their families and caregivers in the battle against the disease, while resolutely pursuing all avenues to extend, improve and ultimately save lives,” Newhouse said on the ALS website.

fit

A healthy app-titude The District is shaping up to be a hot spot for fitness-related tech TECHNOLOGY James Norris has been tracking every aspect of his life for six years. Collecting as much data as possible — and analyzing the heck out of it — isn’t merely an obsession, but a profession. He’s CEO of Self Spark, a company dedicated to promoting health, happiness and productivity through the latest advances in behavioral science and technology. So what did his research about potential office locations tell him? Set up shop in the D.C. area. “It’s a well-educated, fit city,” says Norris, who moved the company from Seattle this year to be part of the Conscious Venture Lab in Columbia, Md. His team’s current focus is developing Spark Weekend, a series of life-hacking boot camps that Norris hopes to put on in 250 cities over the next five years. That makes the District, which hosts a Spark Weekend next month, an early adopter. The TEDx-style talks and the discussions of apps and motivational techniques are geared to anyone looking to eat better, exercise

more and stress less, Norris says. For techies, there are two other events coming to the area this fall focused on life-improvement innovation: Design for Action 2014 and Wearables + Things 2014. The latter will feature Noble Ackerson, the local developer behind LynxFit, a Google Glass exercise app that’s generating big buzz. It’s no surprise that D.C. has become a hot spot for health tech, says C.J. Cross, founder of Fitbase (see box at right). The city has welcomed dozens of new gyms, studios and nutritionrelated businesses over the past decade. Cross, a personal trainer, asked himself, “What’s the next step?” And he dove into creating new online resources. Cross invited other fitness entrepreneurs to a happy hour last Thursday at WeWork Chinatown to share beers, contacts and ideas. The guest list included Andrew Conklin from Routeam (which partners clients with wellness pros to help them achieve health goals) and Hameto Benkreira of Drop In (see right). Get-togethers like these “let us support each other,” says Benkreira, who held a similar event this year. So their businesses, like their clients, will only get stronger. VICKY HALLETT (EXPRESS)

Checking up on D.C.’s startups The area’s fitness entrepreneurs have worked out tech-based solutions to make exercise more effective. Here’s a sampling.

CONNECT WITH PROS Most fitness instructors know a whole lot more about kettlebells than coding, and you can tell by looking at their websites. Fitbase (thefitbase.com) simplifies the process of establishing an online presence with easy-to-use templates and content suggestions (weekly schedules, videos, recipes, etc.). The team also offers marketing assistance geared specifically to folks in the fitness biz.

FIND THE RIGHT GYM Hameto Benkreira was overwhelmed by D.C.’s abundance of gym choices. The experience inspired him to launch Drop In (trydropin.com), which sells discounted gym passes. Bring a buddy to save even more. (Cycle studio Ride DC was just added to the site.) There’s a similar story behind GymLion (gymlion.com), says co-founder Davison Westmoreland. That site’s negotiated deals nationwide are available to individuals as well as corporate wellness programs.

OPTIMIZE PLAYLISTS Grant Hill was a drummer before he began teaching his popular boot camps and cycling classes. So he’s been attuned to how music can boost athletic performance. His big idea is Amplifi (amplifi.biz), an app that compares fitness tracker data with song info to pick a playlist designed to make you work as hard as possible. Look out for a Kickstarter campaign for the project.

So grabbing one called the “Stick” that you can move feels weird at first — and then it’s just challenging. “If I only have time for a 10-minute workout, this is it,” says Kelly Griffith, owner of Xtend Barre DC. The prop, which attaches to a normal barre with bands, is used during the studio’s Stick Fusion classes to make sure abs don’t slack off. One killer exercise: Sit with one leg bent in front of you and the other behind. Hold the stick in both hands above you, lean away from the barre, then come up. (EXPRESS)

VISUALIZE YOUR PROGRESS In a few months, Washingtonians may be greeted at the gym by a VFit scanner (virtualu.co). Developed by a Blacksburg, Va.-based team, that’s a booth you walk into for 10 seconds and emerge from with data on your body fat, resting heart rate, the circumference of any body part and more — for a fee. Athletes and people looking to lose a significant amount of weight are the most obvious candidates for the service, but it’s for anybody who wants to monitor the results of a fitness program, says co-founder and COO Caroline Pugh.

friend at work (a guy about 10 years older than me) is having an affair with our boss. He denies it, but I can tell by the change in behavior in both of them. He’s divorced, she’s married. He is digging himself a professional grave, and I can feel our relationship suffering as well. Help! ANGRY AT HIM

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK

Sounds like you have a kid already Q. I’m tired of my situation: broke and with a man who only searches out easy jobs, never anything challenging or that would bring in more money. We’re having a baby, and I feel alone — all he does is smoke weed and just “hang out.” SO TIRED It does no good to pine for a time machine, but I must ask: Were there parts of him that made you think he would be a worthwhile father and partner when you decided to have a baby? If so, hang on to those parts — nourish them, encourage them and do what you can, together, to maximize them. Perhaps he’s depressed and needs treatment. Perhaps he needs some job search help. Perhaps he could use a nudge

toward coping strategies other than weed. If he’s always been motivation-challenged, however, you’ve got to figure out whether this is what you want, and whether you’d be better off going it alone emotionally, logistically or financially. No matter what, invest in your support network to better build a foundation to take care of this baby, which you may be parenting mainly by yourself — whether you’re broken up or not.

If he’s denying it, there’s nothing more you can do. And honestly, it’s unlikely that you could advise him of anything he doesn’t already know. But have you considered that your Affair-O-Meter is overly oversensitive? Or that your frustration about the situation might be getting too personal? I’m not suggesting that you want him for yourself — I’m not even sure of your gender, relationship status or sexual orientation. (Ah, anonymity!) But it could be that you’re feeling understandably threatened by your boss’ intrusion into your friendship. Unfortunately, that’s not going to have much bearing on his decision to get googly-eyed with her at meetings. Say your peace, then take him at his word. It’s the only choice you have without creating your own story arc in this soap opera. Send your questions for Baggage Check to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@ wpost.com. Andrea is a local clinical psychologist and author of the book “The Friendship Fix” (friendshipfix.com).

Watermelon everywhere

Hungry for more local pops? Look in Wednesday’s Taste section.

For a workout, you can carry a watermelon. (FYI: An onstage version of “Dirty Dancing” opens Aug. 26 in D.C.) But it may be even better for you to just eat it — the fruit is a good source of lycopene (an antioxidant) and vitamins A and C, and it can reduce post-exercise muscle soreness. Available at Soupergirl’s two stores (314 Carroll St. NW and 1829 M St. NW) as well as other markets around town. See thesoupergirl.com for locations.

Available at The Fresh Market locations in Virginia and Maryland, and national distribution is coming soon.

Available at Pleasant Pops Farmhouse Market and Cafe (1781 Florida Ave. NW) and three D.C. farmers markets. See pleasantpops.com for locations.

This light, refreshing blend of watermelon, tomato, cucumber and jalapeno is sold by the pint ($6) and quart ($11), but one sip and you’ll be wishing for a gallon. The annual summer special — a puree, with bite-sized chunks of watermelon floating around — is ideal for a “schvitzy day,” says Soupergirl owner Sara Polon.

Marine Corps Marathoners will be offered this new juice at the finish line. Feeling lazy? You can buy it for $3.50. It’s 100 percent juice (but just 88 percent watermelon — grape and pomegranate are in there too), with no added sugars. The result is a tad sweeter than our tasters would have preferred. Running first is wise: It has 120 calories per 12-ounce bottle.

“It doesn’t get much healthier than this,” says Pleasant Pops co-founder Roger Horowitz, who notes that the $3 sweet treat packs fewer than 30 calories. But it’s loaded with flavor thanks to locally sourced ingredients. Better act fast if you’re craving one — the seasonal flavor will stick around only through the end of the month.

Moss is keeping it under wraps FILM Elisabeth Moss, best known as Peggy Olson, “Mad Men’s” buttoned-up but ambitious secretary-turned-copywriter, has trouble explaining her latest project, “The One I Love.” The film, written and directed by newcomers Justin Lader and Charlie McDowell, respectively, centers on a married couple (Moss and Mark Duplass) on a retreat in a guesthouse with eccentric, Charlie Kaufmaninspired powers. If that sounds vague and slightly confusing, it’s by design. The filmmakers don’t

want viewers to know much going into the movie, and that sometimes trickled down to the cast. “I so barely understood what was happening myself,” Moss admits. It came together thanks to a combination of Lader’s intricately constructed Albee-esque dialogue and carefully calibrated improv between Moss and Duplass, who’s an accomplished writer, director and producer. “We didn’t want it to sound like improv. We didn’t want to be one of those indie movies where it sounds like everyone’s making it up. I like those movies, but we wanted this to have a more classic feel,” Moss, 32, explains. Moss warns her involvement in Jane Campion’s miniseries “Top of the Lake” and “The One
