Downed debris covers a damaged road on Wednesday after heavy rains Tuesday in Glen Burnie, Md. The storm brought rain levels that led to flooding in low-lying areas and necessitated several water rescues around the state.

Officials say a 22-year-old Miss Toyota beauty pageant contestant has been arrested in California after being caught on video in April walking comfortably in high heels at a pageant while still collecting workers’ compensation benefits. She had claimed she broke a toe in March. The state Department of Insurance said Tuesday that Shawna Lynn Palmer was arrested Aug. 8 on three felony counts of defrauding an insurance company. (AP)

The Colorado mountain town of Montezuma is suing its 61 registered voters in an effort to sort out the results of an April election that the lawsuit says was filled with errors. Twelve people ran for mayor and Lesley Davis won by three votes. Davis says 13 voters and at least two candidates were not residents of the town. The Denver Post reports that the lawsuit filed last week commands the voters to appear in court. (AP)

Prosecutors rest their case The defense is set to begin Monday in the McDonnells’ trial VIRGINIA After nearly three weeks of testimony, federal prosecutors wrapped up their corruption case Thursday against former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen. The final prosecution witness, FBI Special Agent David Hulser, described phone records, mansion logs and emails that prosecutors hope will help convince jurors that the former first couple conspired to seek the largess of businessman Jonnie Williams Sr. Prosecutors have said that the McDonnells had financial troubles that may have motivated them to seek the executive’s generosity. Under questioning by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Faulconer, Hulser testified that he calculated the value of most of the loans and gifts that Williams gave to the McDonnells and their children. It came to $177,044.06.

Hulser also testified Thursday that after the investigation became public, the couple repaid Williams his loan money and returned other items to him. Faulconer then put on a fashion show. One at a time, he asked security officers to carry each of those items returned from the McDonnells to Williams to the witness stand. “Agent Hulser, is this an Oscar de la Renta

Police make arrest in death of Pr. George’s County girl

Federal court clarifies date for Va. same-sex marriage

Prince George’s County, Md., police arrested someone they say helped another man in the fatal shooting of 3-year-old Knijah Amore Bibb. Brian Campbell, 24, has been charged with murder, manslaughter and being an accessory to murder in connection with the slaying of Knijah, who died after she was struck by a bullet meant for someone else, authorities said. Police are still searching for the accused shooter, Davon Wallace.

The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond decided Wednesday not to delay its ruling that struck down the state’s gay marriage ban. According to a letter from the court clerk, its ruling is scheduled to go into effect at 8 a.m. on Thursday, barring a stay from the Supreme Court. (TWP)

The defense has argued that McDonnell offered Williams and Star Scientific only the courtesies he offered other Virginia companies. They also said the couple’s marriage was so broken that they couldn’t have conspired. A McDonnell defense attorney pushed back vigorously Thursday against the notion that his client was in extreme financial distress, forcing the FBI agent to acknowledge that the governor had always maintained “excellent” credit scores. And she’s not even breaking a sweat. That’s because Wason is a co-founder of Riide (riide.com), an electric bicycle startup company based in the District. With a flick of her wrist, she

If she decides to pedal, too, she can go even faster. “It’s only lazy if you want it to be,” adds Wason, who envisions Riide bikes as the ultimate transportation choice for urban professionals. Quite a few of them agree: Hours after Wason and co-founder Jeff Stefanis launched a Kickstarter campaign for Riide in January, they hit their $50,000 goal. Wason and Stefanis spent 18 months developing their

Ukraine, Russia locked in standoff over aid convoy

Some Yazidi refugees have taken shelter in Syria after escaping a siege on Mount Sinjar in northern Iraq.

Iraq leader steps down; some Yazidis still stuck BAGHDAD Nouri al-Maliki, Iraq’s prime minister for the past eight years, relinquished the post to his nominated replacement late Thursday, ending a political deadlock that has plunged the country into uncertainty as it fights a Sunni militant insurgency. Standing alongside fellow Dawa Party member, Haideral-Abadi, al-Maliki said he was stepping aside in favor of his “brother,” in order to “facilitate the political process and government formation.” Al-Maliki said the decision to back al-Abadi reflected his desire to “safeguard the high

interests of the country,” adding that he would not be the cause of any bloodshed. “My post is your confidence in me,” he declared in a televised address. Maliki had previously provoked a political crisis by refusing to give up his position and ordering security forces into the streets of Baghdad. He had argued that the appointment of al-Abadi on Monday to form a government was unconstitutional and had launched a legal case against the president over the perceived breach. Maliki, a Shiite, was widely accused of alienating Sunnis, prompting some of them to

support the al-Qaeda-inspired group Islamic State. Meanwhile, President Barack Obama said Thursday the humanitarian crisis atop a barren hill in northern Iraq is over, eliminating the need for a risky U.S. rescue mission. However, Kurdish officials and Yazidi refugees said that thousands of desperate Yazidis remain trapped. They said those still stranded on the slopes of Mount Sinjar are mostly the elderly, sick and very young, who were too weak to continue the trek to safety in Iraq’s northern Kurdistan region. fiercely competitive country that celebrates ostentatious displays of status. This national trait can be seen in booming industries such as private tutoring. The images of the smiling pope in his little car struck a chord online, with many playing on the car’s name. One South Korean user tweeted: “The pope rode the Soul because he is full of soul.” For the man called “The People’s Pope” the choice makes sense. He has eschewed the bulletproof “popemobiles” that his predecessors used on foreign trips and urged priests around

Francis called for peace and unity on the war-divided Korean Peninsula and for both sides to avoid “fruitless” criticisms and shows of force. It’s not clear his message landed: North Korea fired three projectiles into the sea off its eastern coast about an hour before Francis landed in Seoul, and two others later. YOUKYUNG LEE (AP)

SLEEP SCIENCE

A reason to let your partner hog blankets Having trouble falling asleep? Try sticking one or both feet out of the end of your blanket. That’s the advice Natalie Dautovitch, a spokeswoman for the National Sleep Foundation, told New York Magazine. Dautovitch told the magazine that while there was no hard research into the method, keeping feet exposed will help regulate the body’s temperature as it cools down at bedtime. Feet (and hands) have special blood vessels called arteriovenous anastomoses that help to dissipate body heat, Dautovitch told New York Magazine, which can help lead to more restorative sleep. 4 ways Ferguson carries echoes of foreign conflicts

FERGUSON, MO. Jet-black rifles leveled at citizens and mine-resistant vehicles that used to patrol the roadways of Iraq and Afghanistan rumbling through small town America. These are scenes playing out in Ferguson, Mo., which has been wracked by protests for the past week after a police officer fatally shot an unarmed 18-year-old named Michael Brown. For veterans of the wars that the Ferguson protests so closely resemble, the police response has appeared to be not only heavyhanded but out of step with the most effective ways for both law enforcement and military personnel to respond to demonstrations. “You see the police are standing … with bulletproof vests and rifles pointed at people’s chests,” said Jason Fritz, a former Army officer and an international policing operations analyst. “That’s not controlling the crowd, that’s intimidating them.” Gov. Jay Nixon announced Thursday that the Missouri State Highway Patrol will take over supervising security after the local police response drew criticism. The city is also under criticism for refusing to release the name of the officer who shot Brown, citing threats. The hacker group Anonymous on Thursday released a name but the Ferguson police chief said it was incorrect. The protests in Ferguson began just a day after Brown was killed, when a prayer vigil turned into an evening of looting. Scriven King, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force’s law enforcement component and a SWAT officer, attributed the initial spasm of

In Ferguson, Mo., protesters are being tear-gassed and journalists, man-handled and arrested. These are images we’re more used to seeing outside the U.S. Here are some ways that Ferguson, as one colleague put it, has become “Fergustan.”

A protester turns away from smoke billowing around him Wednesday in Ferguson, Mo.

“The images and scenes we continue to see in Ferguson resemble war more than traditional police action.”

violence to a lack of leadership and mismanagement of public perception on the Ferguson Police Department’s behalf. “The first thing that went wrong was when the police showed up with K-9 units,” King said. “The dogs played on racist imagery … it played the situation up and [the department] wasn’t

cognizant of the imagery.” King added that, instead of de-escalating the situation on the second day, the police responded with armored vehicles and SWAT officers clad in bulletproof vests and military-grade rifles. “We went through some pretty bad areas of Afghanistan, but we didn’t wear that much gear,” said

Kyle Dykstra, an Army veteran and former security officer for the State Department. Ferguson’s use of such military equipment has drawn attention to its source: a Pentagon program that provides machine guns and other surplus military equipment for free to local law enforcement agencies. Some are now calling for limits to the program. “I can’t think of a [protest] situation where the use of M4 [rifles] are merited,” Fritz said. “I don’t see it as a viable tactic in any scenario.” King said that if it were a military unit in a similar situation there would be a public affairs officer or civil affairs engagement team that would help bridge the gap between the riot control elements and the general population. “I would hate to call the Ferguson response a military one,” he said. “Because it isn’t, it’s an aberration.” THOMAS GIBBONS-NEFF (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The militarization of the police

Mariam Barghouti, a Palestinian journalist, watched clouds of tear gas encircle Ferguson’s protesters and went to Twitter to offer advice and solidarity. One tweet: “Solidarity with #Ferguson. Remember to not touch your face when teargassed or put water on it. Instead use milk or coke!”

When seeing mine-resistant troop carriers and helmeted snipers atop military vehicles, it’s hard to dispel comparisons to the militarized security forces in other countries such as Egypt and Ukraine.

The no-fly zone

4

Journalist arrests

On Tuesday, St. Louis County Police Department requested a no-fly zone 3,000 feet over Ferguson. The official reason was that it was to “provide a safe environment for law enforcement activities” — but it appeared to be a bid to keep news helicopters away.

On Wednesday, police arrested two journalists at a McDonald’s in Ferguson; they were released without charge. The arrest or detention of journalists covering foreign conflict zones is all too common. In the past month, the Committee to Protect Journalists has called for the release of journalists in Djibouti, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Burma and elsewhere.

THE ROOKIE

Erika White, 26

It’s a quick walk from Erika White’s mall job to the new Tysons Corner station.

Silver sampler: By the end of its first week in service, the Silver Line was already attracting an average of 16,000 riders to its five new stations every weekday. We tracked down a few of them to find out where they’re going — and how it’s going. VICKY HALLETT (EXPRESS)

THE COMMUTER

Russell Woolard, 51 At the McLean station, a big blue banner screams from above the escalators: “Welcome, Silver Line Riders!” The message is courtesy the Mitre Corporation, whose main campus sits just up the hill. And it’s where Woolard works in the communications office. The

best Silver Line news for him is that Mitre, to leverage its new public transit cred, now operates a free shuttle between the station and three of its buildings. Because it’s as far as 1.5 miles from where he works to other Mitre offices, Woolard used to drive in from Leesburg, Va., when he needed to attend events. On days he didn’t need his car, he happily avoided the hellish Tysons traffic by driving to a park and ride lot near home, then taking two buses.

The Mitre shuttle means he can now use public transportation nearly every day. His new routine: park and ride to bus to Silver Line. The trip still takes about an hour and 15 minutes. There’s just one downside: The cost has gone from $6 a day to $10.30. “That’s something I’ll have to budget for, but I figure I’ll make up for that by not using the car so much,” Woolard said. “I haven’t filled up my gas tank since July 17. I could get used to that.”

After finishing up her Saturday shift on Aug. 2, the Sunglass Hut sales associate smoked a cigarette in her car before embarking on that evening’s adventures. She needed something to calm her nerves: She was about to take her first-ever trip on Metro. Since moving from Hampton, Va., to Fairfax County in March, White had been driving into D.C. to see friends. Several parking tickets later, she figured it was time for new tactic. Like many Tysons Corner Center employees, she wasn’t really sure who rides Metro: “They’ve warned us that we’ll have all kinds of characters from all over.” Her mom’s reservations, informed by a certain deadly scene in “House of Cards,” didn’t help. But White promised to stand at least 10 feet from the platform edge. Her first impression of the Tysons station: “This is nice.” She was less pleased by the farecard machines — until a Metro employee swooped in to explain the process, and handed her a map. “I can go everywhere now,” she marveled, scanning the names of the stops. “U Street, Silver Spring, Dupont Circle, Smithsonian. I’ve been dying to go to museums.” When she boarded the train, she didn’t touch anything she didn’t have to — “I left my hand sanitizer in the car,” she explained. The ride was uneventful up until Metro Center. To get to Gallery Place, she had to face her fear of a transfer. Despite two wrong turns, White found her way to the Red Line platform. As she told her mom that morning, “I went to college and got a degree. I think I can figure out how to get on a train and get home.” And now White plans to do just that at least twice a week.

THE ROLL MODEL

Lucinda Shannon, 44 As soon as Shannon realized her house was just two miles from the Wiehle-Reston East Metro station, she decided to become a bike commuter. She could pedal to the Metro, and then ride downtown to her job. Her first step was obvious: Buy a bike. But how would she lug her stuff? Or ride with traffic? Or figure out what to wear? Enter Kelley Westenhoff, chair of Reston’s Pedestrian and Bicycling Advisory Committee. Her group developed 10 route maps for residents looking to get from their neighborhoods to the new station. Committee members even offered to create individualized plans, meet people at their homes and lead them on a commute. Shannon serves on the Reston Board of Directors and is the liaison to this committee, so she was quick to sign up. That’s why Westenhoff arrived at her door at 6:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 4. After completing a gear check — one of Shannon’s tires needed air — the duo took off down a trail that connects with Soapstone Drive. This was the majority of the ride and the bit Shannon dreaded

the most, because it’s uphill and requires riding alongside cars. Westenhoff assured her that there are bike lanes the whole way. There was even better news at the intersection with Sunrise Valley Drive: Westenhoff showed off a shortcut using a series of parking lots to reach the south side of the station. Even this early in the morning, there was barely enough space at the uncovered bike racks to lock up Shannon’s cruiser. (Maybe she should consider a membership to the secure bike room, Westenhoff suggested.) As Shannon rode the escalator into the busy station, she glowed with excitement — and perspiration. She could imagine this ride becoming a habit, she said. “And I don’t need to go to the gym any more,” she added. Westenhoff was ready with a reality check: “It’s all downhill on the way back.”

On the Monday morning after the opening of the Silver Line, the software engineer could not have been experiencing a better commute. He’d waltzed onto a Silver Line train at McPherson Square. At Spring Hill, there was barely a wait for the 423, a new bus that whisked him to Gannett headquarters in just minutes. It was a huge improvement over the longer trip he’d slogged through for the past three years — Metroing from McPherson to West Falls Church, then taking a bus to Gannett — with one exception: The 423 dropped off Shryock on the opposite side of Jones Bridge Drive, and there’s no crosswalk. He and his co-workers had to dash across the street. Shryock tried out a second option on the way home: Instead of taking a bus, he hoofed it 20 minutes to the Tysons station. “I’m used to walking in D.C.,” Shryock said. What is he not used to? Sidewalks that suddenly end and busy roads without pedestrian signals. He ran across two more intersections to get to Metro. Shryock was nonetheless cheery about the trip. He’d made it to the office in about an hour, shaving between 15 and 30 minutes off of his former commute. With the time he’s saving, Shryock has decided he’ll spend a few more minutes in bed. He’ll need the rest after all that sprinting.

At readexpress.com We have the story of another Silver Line commuter, plus a Silver Line travel guide with info on what to do at each station.

Ghost of coaches past IF REDSKINS COACH JAY GRUDEN SEEMS FAMILIAR ENTERING HIS FIRST SEASON, it’s not just because he’s the younger

brother of Super Bowl-winning coach Jon Gruden. Jay Gruden’s style echoes past predecessors, from Richie Petitbon to Steve Spurrier. His brisk practices, no-nonsense demeanor, confidence, faith in assistants and even his game-

Let’s recap Johnson’s eventful week. In Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Real Salt Lake, he fouled a defender then kicked the ball into the back of the player he just knocked down. After the game, the United forward got into a Twitter battle (never a smart thing to do) with fans. Responding to one who said that other Washington athletes still play hard when things aren’t going well, Johnson wrote: “I’m not here to please your town buddy.” The rest of the week involved an apology and a twogame suspension from MLS. Not exactly the best string of decisions by Johnson. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

planning with multiple wideouts are reminders of other Redskins coaches of the modern era. Indeed, Gruden is a composite of these five coaches, and hopefully he’ll get better results than at least four of them.

1

Richie Petitbon 1993

Gruden acts most like the former defensive coordinator who took over for Joe Gibbs in 1993. Neither showed interest in additional roles like team president, vice president or general manager. To Petitbon and Gruden, it’s all about coaching, the players and the games. Saddled with an aging team, Petitbon lasted only one season but he never changed his demeanor.

2

Norv Turner 1994-2000

Gruden’s practices resemble Turner’s. There’s a good combination of teaching and tempo with a sense of urgency to get better or get out. Turner struck a balance, readying and toughening players without being excessive or easy. Like Turner did, Gruden yells at players when they make mistakes but doesn’t use profanity that could be heard by training camp attendees.

3

Joe Gibbs 1981-92; 2004-07

The Hall of Fame coach let his assistants do their jobs and didn’t interfere. Of course, that came easy because Gibbs’ staff included legends like Petitbon at defensive coordinator and offensive line coach Joe Bugel. Gruden, a former offensive coordinator himself, lets his assistants do their thing — while he worries mostly about the offense.

Donald Sterling’s latest effort to block $2 billion sale of L.A. Clippers gets rejected

4

Marty Schottenheimer 2001

If nothing else, Schottenheimer was confident despite starting 0-5 in 2001. Gruden isn’t the “one voice” that Schottenheimer was, but he believes in himself even though this is his first season as a head coach. The good news is that Gruden knows what Schottenheimer didn’t — be humble or you’ll be humbled.

5

Steve Spurrier 2002-03

The “Ol’ Ball Coach” loved his receivers, turning even Rod Gardner into a 1,000-yard producer. Spurrier swore his offense worked in the NFL (it didn’t) and loved three- or four-receiver sets. Gruden will be more balanced than Spurrier, but he too loves three- and fourreceiver schemes. On the plus side, Gruden has better receivers (and a better passer).

You’vegot afighting chance Intense competition for apartments is creating bidding wars for renters Rental market Jeff Freeman, 48, learned this summer he needed to act fast if he had any hopes of signing a lease. In four out of the six properties he applied for in Alexandria and Arlington, Freeman was shocked to learn that he’d lost out to other applicants. They were either quicker to apply than he was or offered more money than the landlord was asking. “I just thought there were so many properties out there, that this can’t happen,” Freeman says. “But it was happening.” Despite thousands of swanky new high-rise apartment units in the Washington area — many of which come with offers of a month or two of free rent to entice would-be dwellers — some renters are opting instead to duke it out over privately run homes. Bidding wars are commonplace over uniquely designed condos, houses and townhouses, especially if they are located in hot neighborhoods such as Georgetown or Old Town Alexandria, or have a fenced-in yard. “It’s amazing,” says Bryan Zupan, director of business development for Urban Igloo (1808 I St. NW, 877-445-6632; urban igloo.com). “With all the units out there on the market, there are still certain units that are creating this type of competition.” For those special properties, rental shoppers are aggressively courting landALLIE GHAMAN (EXPRESS)

lords. Strategies include your basic higher-rent offer as well as promising longer lease terms. A personal plea can be helpful too. Katie Lewis, 31, and her husband, Matt, 29, lost out on the first two houses they applied for this summer. They needed a fencedin yard for their 100-plus-pound golden retrievers Albie and Rufus, and the competition for a suitable home was stiff. “You end up going against the same few families as houses come up on the market,” Lewis says.

nextweek Having house guests in a tiny place? Read the next issue to see how to avoid that can-of-sardines feeling.

Their Realtor, Matt Leighton of Century 21 Redwood Realty, set up an automated search in the Multiple Listing Service for the couple to receive emails about new properties as soon as they entered the market. When the next “perfect” house popped into their inbox, Leighton told them it was time to “sweeten the deal,” Lewis says. The three-bedroom brick colonial in north Arlington listed on day one for $2,995 per month. On day two, the couple offered $3,200. Two other parties put in bids that day and one matched their price.

“Matt suggested we offer more money,” Lewis says, “but I couldn’t do it.” Instead, she handwrote a letter to the landlord — after some prodding by Leighton — explaining why they would be the perfect renters and why the house was ideal for them. “I’ve never been on a dating website, but it felt a little bit like that … like presenting the best side of yourself or something,” she says. It worked. They move in this month. Freeman’s story is a bit different. He didn’t actively participate in any bidding wars; each time the feeding frenzy started he just

moved on to the next property. He knew what his spending cap was and wouldn’t go above it. “I wouldn’t put too much emotion into it,” the certified public accountant says. “If the price went above my number I’d think, ‘OK, well, there’s got to be something else out there for me.’ ”

That something else turned out to be a quiet two-story unit in an Old Town Alexandria boutique condo building. Freeman saw the property on Trulia.com when it first listed and hurried over with a check in hand. The landlord opted to lease out the place to the first qualified

Tackle debt with cheap rent Moving in with your parent isn’t glamourous, but it’s a great way to curb debt.

Finances When people ask me about what they should do about their student loans, I ask: What are you willing to do to get rid of them as fast as you can? And here’s my suggestion: Live for as long as you can with your parents, relatives or anyone who will allow you to stay rent-free or charge you a super-low rent. If you are looking for a strategy to pay off your student loans, look at your housing expense. It’s usually by far the

biggest budget item, taking up 30 percent to 40 percent of many people’s budgets. While giving a talk on the dangers of debt at my church, I asked a young woman with student loans who was living in an apartment if she could move back home. She said she lived near her father. Great. Give up the apartment

Temporary, frugal housing can yield major savings

Time matters when applying for a highly sought-after home, so come prepared, says Olivia Kibler, a property manager at Crescent Property Management (3711 Macomb St., NW, No. 3B; 202-5055454; crescentpropertymanagement .com). Here are some things to bring with you to expedite the application process. T.K. Renters won a recent Georgetown bidding war by opting to buy much of the landlord’s furniture, Kibler says. They also signed a three-year lease with yearly built-in rent increases.

Bankrate.com has a calculator that lets you choose a percentage of your salary as payment on your student loans. On the site, search for “How long will it take to pay off my student loan?” When you input your salary data, be sure to use your net pay rather than your gross salary. So let’s take a student owing $25,000 with a net yearly income of $30,000. If the loan interest rate averaged 6 percent, and living with a parent rent-free enables him or her to devote 30 percent of that income to paying off the loans, he or she would be debt-free in three years and a month. Boost payments to 40 percent of the take-home salary, and he or she would debt-free in a little more than two years. ( T WP)

adults are burdened with student loans, giving them an opportunity to live at home isn’t enabling bad behavior. It’s giving them a chance to start their independence debt-free. Ho w e v e r, m a k e s u r e , i n exchange for no or low rent, they are living frugally so they can devote as much of their income as possible to getting rid of the loans. If you don’t live near relatives or

friends willing to let you live rentfree, look for people renting out a room in their house. If you have to get an apartment, get as many roommates as you can. “I need my space,” another debtladen graduate said. OK, then live with the debt. MICHELLE SINGLE TA RY ( THE WASHINGTON POST )

COLLEGE FOOTBALL | HEISMAN HOPEFULS

If not Jameis, then who?

CHARLES REX ARBOGAST (AP)

Florida State’s Jameis Winston won the Heisman Trophy as a freshman last season while leading the Seminoles to the national title, so there’s no sense in looking elsewhere for the preseason front-runner to win the award again. But Winston is far from a lock. Here are five other players who should have a chance at taking home the Heisman. JOHN MARSHALL (AP)

BASKETBALL

Cousins hurts knee in Team USA practice

1

Marcus Mariota Oregon QB

The Ducks’ leader was a strong Heisman contender last season before being derailed by a knee injury. He still set a school record with 4,380 yards of total offense and accounted for 40 TDs, though he was disappointed when Oregon fell out of nationaltitle contention. The junior returns to lead an offense that piles up points and yards like a video game. If he stays healthy, Mariota is one of the nation’s best dual-threat quarterbacks.

2

Braxton Miller Ohio State QB

The Buckeyes are taking it slow with Miller after offseason shoulder surgery, but he is expected to be ready for the opener against Navy on Aug. 30. Despite missing nearly three full games with a sprained knee last season, he passed for 2,094 yards and 24 touchdowns, and ran for 1,068 yards and 12 scores. The Big Ten’s twotime MVP, he bypassed a shot at the NFL to return to Columbus for his senior season.

10

3

Bryce Petty Baylor QB

The Bears set an NCAA record with 52.4 points per game last season, and Petty was the conductor, setting 17 school records while leading Baylor to its first Big 12 title and only BCS bowl. The senior was the Big 12 offensive player of the year after passing for 4,200 yards and 32 TDs — with just three interceptions — and running for 14 more scores. Expect more big numbers from the Bears and Petty.

4

Todd Gurley Georgia RB

Gurley missed three games last season with an ankle injury and wasn’t right when he came back as the Bulldogs limped to an 8-5 finish. Fully healthy again, the 6-foot-1, 226 pounder has his eyes set on a 2,000-yard season and possibly a spot in New York. Even with his injury a year ago, the junior has rushed for 2,374 yards and 27 touchdowns in two seasons, so 2K isn’t completely out of the question.

5

Myles Jack UCLA LB

Jack made a big splash as a freshman last season by becoming a where-didhe-come-from two-way player, rushing for 120 yards in his first game, scoring four TDs the next. But Jack’s NFL future is as a linebacker, and the Bruins have limited him to that side of the ball in fall camp. The 6-foot-1, 230-pounder might see some time at running back again this season, but he is going to have an impact on defense regardless.

WIZARDS

The number of times the Wizards will be on national TV this upcoming season — nine on ESPN and once on TNT. One year ago, the NBA unveiled a regular-season schedule that included the Wizards on national TV once. A second-round playoff run later, the expectations and exposure have been multiplied. The slate includes a noon Christmas Day contest at Madison Square Garden against the Knicks and another five games on NBATV. (THE WASHINGTON POST) Arizona State offensive lineman Edward Sarafin tells a local magazine he is gay

Team USA is hoping for the best after watching another player get helped off the court with an injury. Sacramento Kings center DeMarcus Cousins hurt his right knee when he got tangled with Anthony Davis after both big men hit the floor going after a loose ball during a scrimmage toward the end of Thursday’s practice. The World Cup of Basketball is just two weeks away. “Definitely scary, not just the fact that he went down, but the fact that I actually was the one who dove on him,” Davis said. “I kind of feel bad and I hope he’s fine because he really wants to be here. He really wants to play.” It was the Americans’ first workout since Paul George broke his right leg in a gruesome injury that occurred during an intrasquad scrimmage on Aug. 1 in Las Vegas. Rob Manfred elected next commissioner

Here are five things to watch with the Hokies this season:

Opening holes: Three starters return on the offensive line, but “that’s where we get young,” tight ends coach Bryan Stinespring said. Mark Shuman is a fifth-year senior but has hardly played, and the guards figure to be redshirt freshman Wyatt Teller and redshirt sophomore Augie Conte. Making stops: Inside linebackers Jack Tyler and Tariq Edwards were the Hokies’ top tacklers in 2013, and both have moved on, leaving redshirt senior Chase Williams and junior Deon Clark to fill their roles. Snap count: Assuming he wins the QB job, Texas Tech transfer Michael Brewer comes to Blacksburg after having played in a spread offense his entire football life, which means he’s always been in the shotgun. He’ll be expected to get under center in this offense, a transition that can either go smoothly or be very costly. Element of surprise: With tight end Ryan Malleck and running back Trey Edmunds healthy, offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler expects the offense to look “significantly different.” Cupcakes: The Hokies play at Ohio State in the second game of the season, but they caught a break from the ACC schedulemaker by avoiding league powerhouses Florida State and Clemson and getting Miami at home. In June, the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board canceled six of the Redskins federal trademark registrations.

Redskins appeal ruling REDSKINS The Redskins on Thursday formally appealed a ruling that stripped the team of trademark protection, the latest legal maneuver in the franchise’s attempt to defend its name against those who consider it a racial slur. The team announced that it had filed its complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and that it “points out the many errors” in the decision by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The office’s Trademark Trial and Appeal Board voted 2-1 on June 18 to cancel six uses of “Redskins” trademarked from 1967

to 1990, saying the name is “disparaging of Native Americans.” “We believe that the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board ignored both federal case law and the weight of the evidence, and we look forward to having a federal court review this obviously flawed decision,” Redskins lawyer Bob Raskopf said in the team’s statement. The team had previously said it would appeal the ruling and had two months to do so. The trademark protection remains in place while the matter makes its way through the courts, a process that could take years. A similar ruling by the trademark

board in 1999 was overturned on a technicality in 2003. Native Americans have been challenging the trademark since 1992. The Redskins say they will ask the court to consider “serious constitutional issues,” including whether the ruling penalizes the team’s right of free speech and whether the team has been unfairly deprived of “valuable and long-held intellectual property rights.” The group of five Native Americans challenging the name is equally confident. “This effort is doomed to fail,” said Amanda Blackhorse, the lead plaintiff. For United, summer break is over D.C. UNITED D.C. United’s summer has been relatively low-key, with plenty of time for rest and recuperation. Those breezy summer days, however, are coming to an end. Due to the World Cup break, United played just seven league games in June and July, riding a perfect month of July to a 5-1-1 record in those matches. August and September appear much more formidable. United has six league matches in August alone. When combined with

CONCACAF Champions League play — beginning Wednesday against Waterhouse FC at RFK Stadium — the team has 13 total

games scheduled in the twomonth period. It will be the biggest proving ground so far for United, which lost its first two matches this month. The team’s depth will be tested with the upcoming schedule, especially with starting left back Chris Korb ruled out for a month with a hamstring injury. D.C. United looks to halt its twogame losing streak when it returns home to face the Rapids on Sunday night. United will be without forward Eddie Johnson, who was suspended two matches for kicking a ball at an opponent on the ground against Real Salt Lake last weekend. (S.V.)

BASEBALL Two girls will be competing in the Little League World Series for just the third time in the tournament’s 68-year history. And their playing days don’t have to end there. Unlike many of the 16 girls that have preceded them, there’s a future for Philadelphia’s Mo’ne Davis and Canada’s Emma March to pitch beyond the fields of South Williamsport, Pa. They could play in high school and beyond. A 17-year-old female high school pitcher from Florida

recently threw batting practice to the Tampa Bay Rays and another woman is pitching in the NCAA. Davis, a 13-year-old, has been dominant leading up to the series. She threw a complete-game and only gave up three hits in the team’s victory in the regional final last week to reach South Williamsport. Davis said girls should be given a chance to play baseball beyond Little League if they want to. “You never know what could happen,” she said. March and Davis will make their LLWS debuts on Friday.

More options now for girls in baseball

Philadelphia’s Mo’ne Davis is one of two girls who’s at this year’s Little League World Series.

Kathryn Johnston was the first female player to appear on a Little League roster in 1950. A rule prohibiting girls from playing was passed in the 1950s, but that was overturned in 1974. Chelsea Baker, a 17-year-old high school knuckleball pitcher in Florida, recently threw batting practice to the Tampa Bay Rays. She said she has received interest from colleges, but no offers yet. “I tried to play softball, but it wasn’t the same for me,” Baker said. “My next goal would be to play college baseball.” SEAN CARLIN (AP)

‘Lets Be Cops’ (R)

No time like the present

Jake Johnson, above right, and Damon Wayans Jr., left, play two washed-ups living in Los Angeles who pose as police officers to get female attention. “Let’s Be Cops” is the kind of movie that depends on laughs from tired bits involving kids swearing, and sustains the audience’s interest with excuses to ogle women dancing provocatively. Johnson and Wayans are both gifted comic performers, but are given way too little to do in this film. ANN HORNADAY (TWP)

‘The Giver’s’ 20-year-old story seems as timely as modern teen dystopia films FILM REVIEW “The Giver,” an adaptation of Lois Lowry’s Newbery Medalwinning young adult novel, may seem like it’s riding on the coattails of such dystopian action hits as “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent.” But in its own way, the movie version, handsomely directed by Phillip Noyce, aptly reflects “The Giver’s” pride of place as the one that started it all, having sold 10 million copies since it was published in 1993. Set in an indeterminate future long after a vague catastrophe called The Ruin, “The Giver” chronicles the story of Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), a teenager who has grown up in the Communities, where the all-seeing, allhearing Council of Elders controls everything from domestic

arrangements and careers to climate and sexual “stirrings,” which are carefully regulated by way of daily morning injections. As “The Giver” begins, Jonas and his peers are about to find out what jobs they’ve been assigned by the chief Elder, played by Meryl Streep. It turns out that Jonas has been chosen to be a Receiver of Memory, meaning that he will soon learn all that happened before the world became the reassuringly predictable bubble in which he grew up. His guide in this endeavor is the title character of “The Giver,” a bearded sage living in an isolated mountaintop aerie played with shamanic gruffness by Jeff Bridges. Filmed in silvery tones of black and white, “The Giver” gradually gives way to a color

scheme that is lurid or muted, depending on what experiences Jonas is accessing. Meanwhile, what he hears from parents and other authority figures is portrayed as the stuff of dehumanizing soul-murder. “Precision of language!” Jonas’ mother (Katie Holmes in a suitably chilly performance) scolds him when he shares his

feelings one night over dinner. Jonas’ father, equally skillfully portrayed by Alexander Skarsgard, features prominently in “The Giver’s” most disturbing sequence, in which Jonas witnesses one of the grisly realities beneath the double-speak that he’s now beginning to question. Like “The Fault in Our Stars” earlier this summer, young people have once again been given their generation’s version of a message that, although not necessarily new, nevertheless may feel urgent and timely to its core audience. “The Giver” has been made with deep respect for that experience, and for the book that so powerfully predicted the grim universe movie teenagers now inhabit — in this case, for the better. In the third outing of this allstar action ensemble, team leader Barney (Sylvester Stallone) boots his pals in favor of younger soldiers. But when they’re all kidnapped, it’s up to the old-timers to save the day. The addition of action stars like Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, above, and Wesley Snipes don’t add any oomph to the film’s stiff dialogue or predictable plot. DERRIK J. LANG (AP)

Alone in the dark: The help failed, not Williams I first saw “Dead Poets Society” at a sleepover in seventh grade. It was a strange choice; I guess we decided we’d watched “Dirty Dancing” enough. Anyway (spoilers!), at the end of the movie Robert Sean Leonard’s handsome, eyebrowed, sensitive character kills himself after his father forbids him from pursuing acting. “That’s a pretty stupid reason to kill yourself,” one friend said as we all pretended we were way too adult to cry at a movie. “Just because you can’t do plays anymore.” But I understood, and I figured I was the only one. I feel like I have so little of meaning to say about Robin Williams, especially when I feel like nearly everything has been said. I’m at the point where I can only cynically note that at least we are having

a conversation about mental health that didn’t immediately follow a mass shooting. The media-Facebook-Twitter deluge has one overarching message: Get help if you need it. That’s important, but what makes me so desperately sad about Williams’ apparent suicide is that it seems he HAD help. He did everything right and things still went terribly wrong. I’ve spent some time in that place where the darkness is so profound that you can’t see a single glimmer. Eventually — after a lot of eventuallys — I did the right thing, too. I got help. My help looks like a nightly pill and a pair of running shoes; a brown-eyed boy and his blue-eyed dad. But I haven’t won; it’s a draw until I die of something else. I don’t know why it worked for me and not for Williams. But we need to stop insinuating (or saying outright) that Williams died because he didn’t get help. He

died because the help didn’t work. Celebrating some mystical idea of “help” as a cure for mental illness is just as much a mistake as saying chemo cures cancer. It doesn’t; it attempts to TREAT cancer. And sometimes it fails, but that failure is not on the patient. It’s not Williams’ fault he felt the only cure for his depression was the one that is, to be frank, guaranteed to work — especially when society has set up a false expectation that treatment for mental health works every time. No other disease puts that kind of pressure on the patient. The past few days, one of the final scenes from “Dead Poets Society” kept coming back to me. It’s the one where John Keating — the role that got Williams his second Oscar nomination — breaks down in his office after his student’s suicide. I used to think Williams’ performance in that scene was a blend of sadness and anger; after all, not being able to do plays IS, on the surface, a pretty stupid reason to kill yourself. Now, though, I think that Keating — and Williams — understood why the kid would do it. And he thought he was the only one. FILM REVIEW Ten minutes into “Land Ho!”, viewers who haven’t warmed up to the character of Mitch would be advised to sneak out while there’s time. The comically boorish protagonist of the film remains like an embarrassing uncle. He’s also the film’s main attraction, despite the fact that this road-trip buddy tale plays out against scenic Icelandic vistas. Here, geysers and vast cascades are just background for a story of two retirees trying to have some fun before they’re too old. Mitch is played by Earl Lynn Nelson, an untrained actor and the second cousin of Martha Stephens, who wrote and directed the film with Aaron Katz. Australian actor Paul Eenhoorn plays Colin, Mitch’s former brother-in-law. We meet them as Mitch tells Colin he has just bought a pair of first-class tickets to Iceland, and intends to pay all the expenses for a trip that will shake the cobwebs off their increasingly lonely lives. Reluctantly, Colin agrees. When the two men aren’t bickering, they frolic through multiple happy montages set to the

’80s hit “In a Big Country.” But Colin’s sometimes testy reserve in the face of Mitch’s high spirits provides the closest thing this

low-key film has to drama. Cinematographer Andrew Reed frames the scenes of human interaction nicely. But the film’s pale color palette doesn’t bring out the best in landscapes that inspire awe both in person and in such films as “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.” Like most stars of road movies, they’re an odd couple; unlike most, both the friction between them and their underlying loyalty feel real, not contrived to supply a movie’s dramatic arc. Williams’ wife says he had Parkinson’s disease

NBC will debut ‘A to Z’ on iHeartRadio.com and app

The wife of Robin Williams says he was in the early stages of Parkinson’s disease and was sober at the time of his apparent suicide. “Robin’s sobriety was intact and he was brave as he struggled with his own battles of depression, anxiety as well as early stages of Parkinson’s Disease, which he was not yet ready to share publicly,” Susan Schneider said in a statement Thursday. Williams was found dead on Monday in his California home. Police said the actor hanged himself. (AP)

Deadline reported that NBC will make the pilot episode of its fall comedy “A to Z” available on Clear Channel’s music streaming service iHeartRadio.com and its mobile app. Users can stream the episode now, seven weeks ahead of its Oct. 2 broadcast airing. It is also available on Xfinity, NBC.com, NBC affiliate websites and a variety of other streaming services. “A to Z” stars Ben Feldman and Cristin Milioti as unlikely romantic partners who find love. blog log

“By the end of his trip, he had visited 11 countries, where people (30 women, 54 men) made 84 moves and helped solve the infernal puzzle … Out of all those people and countries, he claims to have had only one rejection.” MELISSA LOCKER AT TIME.COM reports on

the around-the-globe mission of Nuseir Yassin. Yassin took off after graduating from Harvard College in May and in each country he visited asked strangers to make one move toward solving his Rubik’s Cube. He posted a video of his journey to YouTube on Wednesday.

“Who knew there were plastic water bottles in the 1920s?” KIMBERLEY DADDS AT BUZZFEED.COM points out

the anachronistic prop that went unnoticed until after this publicity image for “Downton Abbey’s” fifth season was released to the public. Members of the British press got a look at the first new episode Thursday, which is expected to air in the United Kingdom in mid-September. PBS has confirmed the new season will air in the United States beginning Jan. 4. (If you haven’t found it yet, the water bottle is on the right side of the fireplace near the corner of the painting.)

“You wouldn’t put your feet in an actual prisoner’s boots [laughing], so Frye went ahead and made them a little more comfortable for you. Because of all the hard labor you’ll be doing.”

“Though the App Store is full of typewriter apps, this is the only one that can also offer a feeling of kinship with Tom Hanks. That might just be worth your download.”

ANDY CUSH AT GAWKER.COM explains

JACOB KASTRENAKES AT THEVERGE

why it’s a good thing Frye made improvements when designing its men’s Prison Boots from the original inspiration of the boots given to Arkansas prison inmates. The boot maker, which has a flagship store in Georgetown, created the style as part of its 150th anniversary collection. A pair will set you back $358.

.COM predicts the actor is probably the

key selling point of his new iPad app, Hanx Writer, which re-creates the experience of typewriter typing. It features the nostalgic clack of audible keystrokes and “paper” that moves from side-to-side and needs to be rolled in each time you start a new page. You can even set the backspace key to mark out mistakes with Xs.

DIFFICULTY

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

They bought 90 minutes and got -60 IMP Entertainment is suing Nicki Minaj for her bad behavior at an NBA All-Star weekend event in 2011, The New York Post reported. The suit, which asks for $50,000, alleges that Minaj was 90 minutes late for her one-hour performance, and only stayed for 30 minutes. According to papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, her actions “defeated the entire purpose of” the engagement. (EXPRESS)
