Science Solves Ship’s Mysteries Vessel found under ruins of WTC is 200 years old, report says

It was a Tuesday when construction workers found it. The location was lower Manhattan and the year was 2010 — nine years after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, that toppled the World Trade Center towers. The workers were in awe. Underneath the black muck and ooze of the ruins lay an exoskeleton of something that hadn’t seen air for 200 years and, freshly exposed to the elements, was quickly deteriorating. It was a vessel, 30 feet long. Hundreds of years old, the cargo ship had somehow been preserved 20 to 30 feet below street level. Four years later, Columbia University researchers laid out many of the ship’s secrets in a study published this month in the journal Tree-Ring Research. Scientists say this “rare and valuable piece of American shipbuilding history” helps shed light on how ships

Archeologists dismantle the ship found under the World Trade Center ruins in 2010.

How It Got There The land upon which the World Trade Center was built was not always land. After the British came to town and founded New York, some of the coastline and inland bodies of water were filled to create more land. “Cheap and abundant fill materials such as rocks, earth and refuse were placed behind wooden barriers or within wood structures to create new land,” the study says. “Earlier wharfs and abandoned merchant ships were often a component of the fill in newly constructed land.” Sometime between 1760 and 1818, the study says, the land where the World Trade Center would stand was filled. “The location where the ship was found had been infilled by the 1790s,” wrote the scientists. (T WP)

of that period were constructed. “Our hypothesis is that the ship was built in the mid to late 18th century and was sunk, either deliberately or accidentally, less than thirty years later,” wrote the scientists, led by Dario Martin-Benito of Columbia’s Tree-Ring Laboratory. But where was it built? The answers, researchers say, are in its wood. Applying the techniques of dendrochronology, or tree-ring dating, the researchers homed in on what went down — and where. The most likely area: Philadelphia. Their research “suggests that most if not all of the timbers used to build the ship came from the same forest in the Philadelphia area.” The study said it sank at a lower Manhattan harbor only 20 to 30 years after it was built. But its “short lifespan” was perhaps due to “hard use, repairs and shipworm infestation.” “I don’t know much about the life expectancy for boats,” Martin-Benito told Live Science. “But that doesn’t seem like too long for something that would take so long to build.” T ER R EN C E M C C OY

California’s Republican candidate for governor said he spent a week living as a homeless person in search of a job to test Gov. Jerry Brown’s claim that the state is making a comeback after the recession. In an opinion piece published in The Wall Street Journal, Neel Kashkari said he took a bus from Los Angeles to Fresno earlier this month with $40 in his pocket, and set out to find work. He turned to park benches and parking lots to sleep at night and got food at a homeless shelter. The 41-year-old Kashkari went to dozens of businesses, offering to wash dishes, sweep floors, pack boxes and cook meals, but he was unable to find a job. Kashkari, a for-

mer U.S. Treasury official who helped oversee the federal bank bailout during the recession, accused the state’s politicians of ignoring the Kashkari poor and said California needs to reduce regulations to help create jobs. “Five days into my search … I asked myself: What would solve my problems? Food stamps? Welfare? An increased minimum wage? No. I needed a job,” he wrote. Dan Newman, a spokesman for Brown’s campaign, said he was having difficulty reconciling Kashkari’s “bizarre campaign stunt” with his assistance for big banks. (AP)

A little history: Russia is banning imports of most fruit and vegetables from Poland for what it says are health violations. Polish officials, however, say the ban is retaliation for their support of sanctions against Russia over Ukraine. The ban is expected to mostly affect Polish apples. The response: The newspaper Puls Biznesu called Wednesday for a show of support, urging people to eat more apples and to drink cider. People responded with humor on Twitter. One predicted that half of Warsaw would get drunk on cider over the weekend. “An apple a day keeps Putin away!” wrote another Twitter user. (AP)

New York The spread of the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa prompted the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday to raise its travel health alert to Level 3, its highest level, warning people to avoid nonessential travel to the countries experiencing the outbreak. CDC Director Tom Frieden also said the agency will send 50 additional personnel over the next month to Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Since the first report of the virus in March, there have been 1,201 cases reported and 672 deaths, according to the World Health Organization. The CDC rarely issues this type of travel alert unless there is grave risk, such as for the 2003 outbreak of the deadly disease SARS.

This is the first war they have endured. They were born and raised in Germany and came back to Gaza a year ago because my mother was extremely ill, and with the Rafah border consistently closed it’s impossible to get someone in her condition to Cairo, let alone to Germany. Since our return, my children are constantly asking questions, which have become harder to answer since the war started. What is happening, Mom? Why are they killing children? Will we die, too? Why do they hate us? Don’t they have children? Am I supposed to tell them that, yes, we could die at any time from an incoming shell? How can I explain that, yes, the soldiers who have killed so many children often have children of their own? How can I explain that fireworks in Germany signify joy and celebration, while “fireworks” in Gaza cause death? Full story at washingtonpost.com.

Meanwhile, Kent Brantly, a U.S. physician in Liberia who has contracted the virus, “took a turn for the worse” Wednesday, according to aid group Samaritan’s Purse. When he was offered an experimental serum, there was only enough for one person, so he asked that it be given to Nancy Writebol, an American missionary worker who also has Ebola. When the British House of Commons voted last summer to buck calls to join the U.S. in possible military intervention in Syria, it set off a furious round of soul-searching over whether the unbreakable bond between London and Washington had just sustained a grievous blow. The Sun even ran a front-page death notice marking the passing of the Special Relationship, “beloved offspring of Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt,” at age 67. Then, when the U.S. took a hard line as Russian President Vladimir Putin began dismembering Ukraine, it looked as if Britain wasn’t going to respond forcefully. That changed with the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over eastern Ukraine. Within days, British Prime Minister David Cameron

In the end, Cameron’s prodding may have helped move his counterparts toward a deal that allowed the U.S. and Europe to announce this week measures targeting the Russian defense, finance and energy sectors. In a stroke, the substantial daylight that had grown between the U.S. and Europe was eliminated. GRIFF WIT TE (THE WASHINGTON POST )

If anyone should be thrilled by Metro’s progress, it’s elementary school students. When the time comes to start looking at colleges, they’ll be able to ride new rail cars out to Dulles. When they’re ready to join the workforce, Tysons, Va., may actually resemble a walkable, bikable place. And when they have young kids of their own, Metro could be implementing the 2040 plan, which calls for trains running through Georgetown and a loop around downtown. When the Poor Want Their Own Door Housing plan in D.C. raises issues amid a debate in New York Washington In an age of widening inequality, a “poor door” has become an outsized symbol. Earlier this month, New York City approved plans for a high-rise apartment that will include a separate entrance for subsidized tenants. The luxury condo will have more than 150 market-rate apartments. But its 55 affordable units will be separated with different amenities and a different front door. Affordable housing advocates have winced at the image, as has the

city’s mayor and much of Twitter. But the idea of economically segregated housing under the same roof raises some legitimately thorny issues. Take, for instance, Portner Place, a complex of Section 8 apartments near the intersection of U and 14th streets in Northwest. The land is slated for redevelopment into a 350unit mixed-income property that will include two wings: one for marketrate tenants and the other for Portner Place’s existing residents, plus another 48 units of affordable housing. They’ll have separate entrances. Portner Place’s current tenants requested this. They opted for a design that keeps long-time neighbors together with a front door off of quieter V Street. The separation also entails different amenities: a com-

puter room instead of yoga studio, a playground instead of a club room. In New York, the “poor door” has been criticized as a mechanism to spare market-rate tenants the “terrible awkwardness” of encountering their lower-income neighbors. Less consideration has been given to whether lower-income tenants — often families — want to share walls, common space and similar amenities with young professionals.

D.C.’s zoning code generally prohibits economic segregation in mixed-income housing. But in a case like Portner Place, the Zoning Commission may recognize legitimate reasons for separation, says Ellen McCarthy, the director of D.C.’s Office of Planning. Extensive research has pointed to the value of mixed-income neighborhoods, as well as the harm to lowincome families of living amid concentrated poverty. This is why cities

The prosecution’s star witness at the corruption trial of former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife told jurors Thursday he had a simple reason for lavishing gifts on the first family: “Because they’re helping me.” Jonnie Williams Sr., the former Star Scientific CEO, testified Thursday that he complied with some requests — while turning down others — because he hoped his company would gain credibility through an association with the governor’s office. He tried to keep the arrangement quiet, something the governor agreed would be a good idea, Williams testified. “I didn’t want anyone to know I was helping the governor financially with his problems while he was helping my company,” Williams said. like D.C. and New York want developers to include affordable units within a development, rather than pay for affordable housing across town. Amid all of the benefits of income integration, though, the question of scale is less clear. We know mixed-income neighborhoods and developments are good. But mixed-income wings and floors? “Now that there’s been some more experience nationwide with inclusionary zoning programs,” McCarthy says, “we’ll be looking to see whether people have found that proximity — being on the same hall — has had important impacts, or whether it’s been more that you’ve given people access to low-poverty neighborhoods.”

Cover Story

The District’s Dialect Researchers study the meaning and history of local words, accents

A Quick Primer

There are a few ways to tell if someone grew up in the D.C. area. The easiest giveaway is in the slang they use. Local jargon spans quite a few words, but there are three main terms. CLINTON YATES ( T WP)

“I was cised to see you Friday.”

“Stop acting like a bama!”

“You think that jont busy?”

Washington Bama

Cised

Jont

In its most basic form, it’s an insult. There are certain applications that could be qualified as a term of endearment or just as a general term for a person. But if you don’t know what you’re doing, don’t go throwing that around without expecting people to be offended. Make no mistake, if someone calls you a bama (as in Alabama), whatever you’re doing, you’re doing it wrong. For whatever reason, the spelling is up for debate (some prefer to spell it “bamma”).

To be extremely excited about something. If you’re looking for a pronunciation, think of the word “precise” and lose the “pre.” The radio show “The Sports Junkies” uses it a lot, and many people seem to think they made it up. Wrong. They grew up in Prince George’s County [Md.] in the 1980s and use it because they like it, the same reason the rest of us do. There are various ways to use it, such as “cising something up” — to over-hype something. The spelling is also debated (some spell it “sice”).

Can refer to a person, place or thing. In New York, they say joint. In Philly, they say jawn. In D.C., we say “jont.” Except, it doesn’t sound the way it’s spelled. It’s kind of a mix of the two previous words, but not really. It pretty much means anything you want it to. Basically, it can substitute for any thing or inanimate object. The plural spells out as “jonx.” This word has the highest degree of difficulty for non-local users. If you can’t pronounce it, DON’T try. It’s not worth getting labeled a bama.

which can refer to a place, a thing or an attractive person. “We have a D.C. terminology, our own vernacular, our own way of talking,” says Reggie Sellers, 27, who grew up in Southeast and works at Nationals Park. Yes, he uses “bama” and “cised.” And he says that people in towns as close as Richmond use the same word to mean different things: “Bum,” he says, can mean something good there but not in D.C.

The easiest way to tell if someone grew up here is by the words they use. But phonetic tidbits like the vowel merger “can tell big historical and cultural stories,” says Walt Wolfram, a linguistics professor at North Carolina State University. Wolfram, who spent 25 years doing research in D.C., points to the example of people here who say “warsh” for “wash.” Black people won’t do that, he says. Nor will white newcomers. The added “r” indicates that the speaker probably comes from a white family that has lived here for several generations. “That one particular phonetic detail,” he says, carries just as much information as whether someone says “soda” rather than “pop.” One Georgetown researcher is working among African-Americans in Southeast — all D.C. natives, from different social classes. Individual usage varies, but her research reveals that the professionals among them might avoid certain grammatical features (such as double negatives) while changing the pronunciation of final consonants in

LANCE ROSENFIELD (PRIME FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

Sometimes, accents speak louder than words. Just ask the Georgetown University researchers who have been studying the way people in D.C. speak. When they hosted a couple of forums this spring to tell D.C. residents what they’ve learned, the responses were passionate. “It really stirs a lot of emotion,” says Minnie Quartey Annan, one of the researchers. Annan is listening to her colleague Melissa Ricks talk about growing up in the ’70s and ’80s near Columbia Heights. She is listening not just to the stories, but to how Ricks is telling them. The words she chooses and the way she pronounces them can tell a story of their own, Annan says. Certain vowels, for example, might indicate how much Ricks still feels she belongs to D.C., now that she lives in the suburbs. One of the specif ic details Annan is listening for is what she calls a “merger” — whether Ricks pronounces “Maryland” a bit like “Muriland,” and “very” like “vury.” “The D.C. area, has very interesting vowels,” explains Annan, project coordinator of a long-term study of D.C. language. The merger she’s looking for, more widespread among whites, is a distinctive feature of African-American speech here. “It goes up as far as [Prince George’s] County,” Annan says. But not much farther, as far as she can tell. And you won’t hear black folks speaking like that in northern Virginia, she says. The pronunciation occurs sideby-side with a handful of distinctively D.C. words, including “bama,” meaning somebody who’s unkempt; “cised,” meaning excited; and “jont,”

some words, so that “bed” sounds more like “bet,” “bag” becomes “back.” By mixing and matching, researchers say, people can signal several different identities in a single sentence. The data that the researchers have been collecting will contribute to the Language and Communication in Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area Project. Co-founded by Georgetown linguistics professor Natalie Schilling in 2006, it aims to piece together the linguistic mosaic of a city that’s unusual because of its mix of transient populations and generations-old communities. Linguists have studied dialects all over the country, but D.C. presents particular challenges, not only because so much of the population is on the move but because the city is at a “dialect crossroads,” Schilling says. “When asked about their accent, people from D.C. often say, ‘Whenever I go north, they think I talk Southern, and when I go south, they call me a Yankee,’ ” Schilling says. Series Preview

Without the slugger, the Nats’ lineup has struggled mightily

The first-place Nationals opened a four-game series against the lastplace Phillies on Thursday night at Nationals Park. Washington entered the weekend with the best run differential in the NL.

Ryan Zimmerman has long been the face of the Nationals’ franchise, so it’s been tough for the team to see him miss so many games this season. Zimmerman has played in 53 of Washington’s games, missing half of the season so far due to thumb and, more recently, hamstring injuries. W hen he’s been available, he’s performed well — with a .282/.345/.456 line with five home runs and 36 RBIs. “He makes the whole lineup deeper and doesn’t give pitchers a break,” center fielder Denard Span said. Zimmerman was put on the 15-day disabled list on July 23. With what’s been reported as a Grade 3 hamstring strain by mlb.com, he could be out for a while. The Nationals have yet to find a suitable replacement for Zimmerman in the lineup. Here’s how his absence has affected the team:

Roberto Hernandez (5-8, 4.14 ERA) vs. Doug Fister (10-2, 2.69 ERA)

The Nationals score more runs with Zimmerman in In the 53 games Zimmerman has played, the Nationals have averaged 4.6 runs per game. In the 52 games without him prior to Thursday night’s game against the Phillies, the Nationals have scored an average of 3.7 runs per outing. Without Zimmerman’s bat, the Nationals have had to use Danny Espinosa (.217), Kevin Frandsen (.234) and Zach Walters (.205) at

In the 53 games with Nationals slugger Ryan Zimmerman in the lineup this season, Washington has a 34-19 record.

Nats Trade for Cabrera The Nationals acquired two-time All-Star infielder Asdrubal Cabrera and cash from the Cleveland Indians for shortstop Zach Walters on Thursday. The 28-year-old Cabrera has spent most of his career at shortstop but has played 162 games at second base — his likely position in Washington — most recently in 2009. Zimmerman provides a spark to teammates The numbers suggest Zimmerman’s presence boosts some of his teammates. Two key contributors that bat near Zimmerman in the lineup, Jayson Werth (.284) and Ian Desmond

(.250), are great beneficiaries. In games Zimmerman has appeared in prior to Thursday, Werth held a batting average of .293, with Desmond a notch below at .292. In games Zimmerman has been forced to sit out, Werth’s average dips to .275, and Desmond plummets to .207.

Odds of winning increase with Zimmerman When Zimmerman was in the lineup for Washington, the Nationals went 34-19. Without him, the Nationals were 24-28 heading into Thursday night. With the Nationals clinging to a small lead in the NL East, they don’t have much margin for error. JASON BUT T (FOR E XPRESS)

Who’s Hot? Denard Span, Nationals: The center fielder entered Thursday’s game with 12 hits in his previous seven games and has drawn eight walks in his previous four games.

Who’s Not? Adam LaRoche, Nationals: The first baseman had just one hit in the entire three-game series against the Marlins. He entered Thursday with a .161 batting average in July.

Building Blocks for Moses Rookie is switching from left to right tackle for Redskins Morgan Moses is finding out that his second education comes with a lot more bumps and bruises than the one he received at the University of Virginia. Moses, who was selected by the Redskins in the third round of the 2014 draft, graduated with a degree in anthropology shortly after rookie minicamp in May. The offensive lineman is adjusting to his new life as a full-time football player during training camp in Richmond. “Now it’s a job,” the 6-foot-6, 318-pounder said. “You’re out here competing with the best of the best, and learning tips and tricks from them to get better is something I’m striving to do.” Moses’ biggest adjustment since becoming a pro is moving from left to right tackle, which has accounted for a somewhat slow start in camp — one that Redskins coach Jay Gruden is willing to overlook for a time.

The Redskins’ Trent Williams, left, runs a drill with Morgan Moses at training camp.

“When you’re moving them around from the left side to right side, it’s not easy for a tackle. It doesn’t sound like much to us in here, but it’s a totally different technique from time to time, a different stance,” Gruden said. “You do have to give him a little leeway from time to time, but he’s done a good job. I think he still has a long way to go with his aiming points

and some of the protections, but we love his length.” That length is what made Moses an appealing prospect after a solid career with the Cavaliers, but he slid a bit from some first-round projections before Washington snagged him with the 66th pick. “You never know how the carpet unrolls,” Moses said of the draft. “But it worked out well. Lester Goes to A’s; Price to Tigers The Oakland Athletics won the Jon Lester sweepstakes, acquiring the left-hander and outfielder Jonny Gomes from the Boston Red Sox for slugging outfielder Yoenis Cespedes before Thursday’s trade deadline. Oakland, with the best record in baseball at 66-41, also received cash from Boston in another blockbuster deal by A’s general manager Billy Beane. The Red Sox also get a draft pick. in Washington, I’m in my hometown for training camp, so being able to have that support system and backbone as I go through my rookie year … I’m not mad at all.” Moses understands that he’s a work in progress, and so far in camp, he says it’s all about doing the little things to get better. “It’s working at everything — my craft and my technique — to become the polished player I want to be,” he said. Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams has been pleased with the rookie’s work ethic. “He’s made a good impression,” Williams said. “He’s very diligent in his work. He does all the things he needs to do to improve and to be a playmaker for us.” Right now, Moses is penciled in as a backup, but the rookie knows that a good camp will increase the coaches’ confidence in him to step in and get the job done. “One thing I told myself is to come out here and get better every day, and that’s all you can ask for,” he said. “If you do that, everything else will take care of itself.” ELLIOT T SMITH (FOR E XPRESS)

Busy Day for Boston In addition to trading Jon Lester to Oakland, the Red Sox made several other deals before Thursday’s trade deadline. (AP)

The Red Sox traded right-hander John Lackey to the Cardinals for right-hander Joe Kelly and outfielder Allen Craig. This leaves Boston without its top two starters. Boston traded Andrew Miller to the Orioles for minor league pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez. The deal fortified the Orioles’ bullpen. The Red Sox even made a trade with the Yankees. Boston obtained third baseman Kelly Johnson for shortstop Stephen Drew.

Beal Looks To Grow at U.S. Camp Basketball Bradley Beal is out to show he is getting better while matching up in practice at Team USA training camp with All-Stars and other rising talents in the game. Unlike last summer, when he was in Las Vegas as a spectator as he recovered from a stress injury in his right leg and watching John Wall compete, Beal is often sharing the floor with his Wizards backcourt mate. “It’s a great sign for our team, for us continuing to grow and it’s just showing that we’re constantly getting better and better and better,” he said. “We’re going to put on for the city of D.C., and for our families and the Wizards’ organization.” Beal is also excited about what the Wizards were able to accomplish this summer in bringing back coach Randy Wittman, Marcin Gortat and Kevin Seraphin, adding physical forwards Kris Humphries and DeJuan Blair and making up for the departure of Trevor Ariza by signing future Hall of Famer Paul Pierce. “I knew we’d get a good [small forward]. They didn’t let me down there,” Beal said of Pierce. “I’m definitely going to try to learn from him, his mid-post game, and just how he takes his time and gets what he wants on offense.” MICHAEL LEE (THE WASHINGTON POST )

United’s Midseason Awards

VICTOR R. CAIVANO (AP)

After a season in which D.C. United won just three games, the club already has 11 victories in 2014 and is riding a four-game winning streak. Although the team is a little over halfway through its regular-season schedule (20 games played, 14 to go), let’s dole out some midseason awards. SETH VERTELNEY (FOR E XPRESS)

Basketball Manu Ginobili will not play for Argentina at the FIBA World Cup because of a stress fracture in his right leg that has bothered the San Antonio Spurs guard since the playoffs. The Argentine Basketball Federation announced the decision on Thursday. The World Cup will be played starting Aug. 30 in Spain, and Ginobili’s loss is a big blow for Argentina’s chances. The 37-year-old Ginobili played through the injury while helping the Spurs beat the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. He has long relished international competition, but the San Antonio Express-News first reported earlier this week that the Spurs requested Ginobili not play in Spain because of the lingering issue. Best newcomer: Fabian Espindola

Rookie of the year: Steve Birnbaum

Biggest surprise: Chris Rolfe

This award could go to a number of players, with Jeff Parke, Bobby Boswell, Sean Franklin, Chris Rolfe and Davy Arnaud all making a strong case. Espindola gets the nod here for completely revitalizing the team’s offense. Despite missing the past five games with an injury, Espindola still leads the team in goals (seven) and assists (eight).

OK, so the 23-year-old center back doesn’t have much competition in this category, as he’s the only rookie to log any minutes for United this season. However, his contributions over the past two months deserve recognition. The California product has stepped into the starting lineup the past seven games and filled in seamlessly for the injured Parke.

When the 31-year-old was acquired in April, he was expected to help United’s depth with Chris Pontius out with a long-term injury. Instead, Rolfe (four goals, five assists) has become one of the team’s most crucial players, using his creativity to bolster the attack. As coach Ben Olsen said after Wednesday’s win: “He’s just a classy player and we’re lucky to have him.”

MVP: Bobby Boswell Had Espindola remained healthy, it’s likely he would be the MVP, but Boswell has been the biggest reason for United’s massive defensive turnaround. After a season in which United conceded 1.7 goals per game, the team has that number down to 1.0 goal per game in 2014. The veteran center back has been the main organizer and sets the tone by winning plenty of tackles and aerial challenges.

Rice Says Actions ‘Inexcusable’ NFL Ray Rice stepped to the microphone, took a deep breath and spoke for 17 minutes about what he called “the biggest mistake of his life.” His arrest for domestic violence against his then-fiancee last February is something Rice figures will haunt him long after his NFL career has ended. The Baltimore Ravens running back was arrested on assault charges following a Feb. 15 altercation in New Jersey in which he allegedly struck Janay Palmer. Rice has been accepted into a diversion program, which upon completion could lead to the charges being dropped. “My actions that night were

Me having to explain that to her, what happened that night, that’s something I have to live with the rest of my life.” Rice was referring to a grainy video in which he is shown dragging Palmer, now his wife, from an elevator at an Atlantic City casino. He did not address the incident at an impromptu news conference in May, and although he refused to divulge details on Thursday, he dismissed the notion that he was provoked. “I don’t want to keep re-living the incident. I’m trying to move forward,” he said. “I don’t condone any of my behavior. I take full responsibility for my actions. My wife can do no wrong.” DAVID GINSBURG (AP)

ABig Moment InRentals A local developer bucks the trend of tiny units in favor of room for families

EVY MAGES (FORTHEWASHINGTON POST)

Sri Velamati, a vice president with local apartment developer Tower Cos., sits outside the Blairs, which will be redeveloped into larger, family-friendly units.

As millennials poured into Washington and itsclose-in suburbs during recent years, real estatedevelopers — seeing trends toward smaller units in urban locations — began building tens of thousands of units catering to them. Sleek towers of tiny, pricey units with granite counters inside and rooftop pools outside began going up on H Street, in NoMa, Clarendon and the Potomac Yard area of Alexandria. The “Manhattanization of D.C.” had begun, and every company seemed to have the same playbook. Now a developer in Silver Spring is trying something different. Before the terms “mixed-use” or “transit-oriented development” came into vogue, the Blairs (1401 Blair Mill Road, Silver Spring; blairapartments.com), built in the late 1950s and 1960s, combined more than 1,300 apartments with a Giant grocery store and restaurants within walking distance of a Red Line Metro station, which opened in 1978. But now the project, located just over the line from the District between Eastern Avenue, Colesville Road, East-West Highway and Blair Mill Road, looks out of date. Early last year, executives from the Tower Cos. began plotting a redevelopment that would add a central park, new retail and thousands of new apartments. What they haven’t done, however, is pitch CONTINUED ON R3

Trend Busters The Tower Cos., a developer based in Rockville, is redeveloping the Blairs, a project in Silver Spring with larger apartments. Tower will likely have to charge less per square foot than companies building smaller apartments. Here’s a look at their strategy, according to a Tower executive.

Tower plans to hold onto the property for the long-term, rather than selling it to another company as soon as it’s leased, which is a common practice. The Blairs has succeeded retaining residents for years, some of them changing units as they got married, had children, became empty nesters and retired. There is a booming market for couples who are having kids but who can’t afford to buy a home with good schools in D.C. or close-in suburbs. (CAP BIZ)

Scott Haze anchors “Child of God” with an intense, horrifying performance.

‘Child of God’ Adapted from Cormac McCarthy’s 1973 novel by the filmmaker and actor James Franco, “Child of God” is shot without bells and whistles. Hand-held camerawork draws the story forward unfussily, and yet with a kind of ghastly grandeur. As Lester, an angry homeless man who may be borderline developmentally disabled, mad, or both, Scott Haze is both riveting and revolting. Throughout the course of the film, Lester becomes a murderous necrophiliac who keeps his rotting female victims in a cave, where he ultimately dresses up in their clothing and scalped hair. Yes, it’s nauseating, but Franco keeps you in your seat, mainly by harnessing the power of Haze. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘A Five Star Life’ (UNRATED, 85 MINUTES)

Single and childless, Irene (Margherita Buy) is ideal for her dreary job as a hotel inspector, which requires travel 90 percent of the year. Though much of the Italian film (directed by Maria Sole Tognazzi) delves into the minutiae of hotel ratings, the film’s true subject is Irene’s lack of fulfillment as a human being. But when our heroine meets Kate, a saucy Englishwoman, an hour into the film, the pulse of the film picks up, as do the stakes. The film’s last half-hour takes some wonderful little detours and is filled with surprises both sad and delightful. The final destination of “A Five Star Life” is well worth the wait, but the service is so slow that some viewers may check out early. M.O. (TWP)

Looks like the Guardians of the Galaxy will let in pretty much anybody.

THE REELIST

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY

Funny, Not Comic If “Guardians of the Galaxy” had tried to be a superhero movie, it would have been in trouble. Not only because it would have been the fourth of its kind this year, but because it would have had to follow the superlative “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and the very strong “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” (And, um, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” but not much competition there.) Instead of yet another comic book movie, “Guardians” is the best comedy of the year, and it just so

happens it’s based on comic books. It’s more “Firefly” than “Avengers,” and that’s the best thing about it. “Winter Soldier” took the superhero movie to extraordinary new levels (with help from the source material, of course) by using comic book tropes to examine the current state of the U.S. government. I recently spent 20 minutes discussing whether Cap’s decision not to wear a motorcycle helmet sig-

position as a straight white guy; one has to wonder if Gabe Jones, the lone African-American in the Howling Commandos, would look back at that time in our history with as much fondness as Steve Rogers does. “Guardians of the Galaxy” doesn’t have such a deep message, but that’s not a fault — that’s a strength. The few false notes in the fi lm come when its reach exceeds its grasp in terms of emotional punches, though it does, at times, have resonance. This is the first film in recent memory where a genetically enhanced talking raccoon made me tear up. Instead of profundity, you’ve got genuinely likable characters who learn a Valuable Lesson About Friendship, but not in some heavyhanded after-school-special kind of way. Even the hamminess of the film works; as the major villain, Lee Pace revels in his evilness and chews so much of the scenery I’m surprised there weren’t teeth marks in the screen itself — but everything about the film is so over-the-top and joyous that what would be unforgivable in a more serious film fits in here. My major quibble with “Guardians,” in fact, is that the 3-D conversion is terrible. Go for 2-D. You don’t need to like sci-fi to like “Guardians”; you don’t have to have darkened the door of a comic book shop or know who Jack Kirby was or be able to say whether Batman is DC or Marvel. You don’t even have to have seen another superhero movie in your life. All you need to do is drop any biases and have enough money to cover your (2-D) ticket. Just sit back and enjoy; the Guardians will take care of the rest.

A New Girl on Fire: USA Today reported on Thursday that Lorde, left, will curate the soundtrack for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1.” The Grammy-winning pop singer will also release the first single for the film, following Taylor Swift and Coldplay, who performed the previous films’ first singles. In a statement, Lorde said she anticipated the soundtrack will “surprise people.” “Mockingjay — Part 1” hits theaters on Nov. 21. (E XPRESS)

Going Deep in His Soul Chadwick Boseman shimmied a mile in James Brown’s shoes

Chadwick Boseman, center, plays that funky musician.

Film

1811 14TH ST NW www.blackcatdc.com AUGUST SHOWS UNIVERSAL PICTURES

For last year’s “42,” Chadwick Boseman had to learn to play baseball like Jackie Robinson. For “Get On Up,” out Friday, he had to learn to perform like James Brown. Which made professional baseball look easy. “I had to get up every morning and lace ’em up, no matter what kind of shoes they were,” Boseman says of his two biggest roles. “Here’s the key difference: When you’re performing onstage and you’re entertaining people, you have to look like you’re enjoying it. When you’re playing a sport you can look tired, you can use the pain — but you can’t really use it when you’re onstage.” “Get On Up,” which charts Brown’s rise to fame, is no hagiography, addressing his childhood in the Jim Crow South, his drug addiction and his brushes with the law. “I think James Brown is a hero — a reluctant hero — but I also

think he’s an antihero,” Boseman says. “You don’t get to see AfricanAmerican characters like that a lot. It’s refreshing to see someone that you love anyway, regardless of the bad stuff they’ve done.” The film’s best scenes are the musical performances, when Boseman isn’t so much acting as channeling the Godfather of Soul. Director Tate Taylor (“The Help”) slyly reveals a difference between the shows Brown plays for mostly white audiences and those for mostly Afri-

audience knows the culture better. They understand how to respond.” Contrast that with a scene in which Brown performs on a TV Christmas special, surrounded by cheerful white folks in ski sweaters politely swaying and clapping on the beat. Reactions aside, Brown managed to achieve huge crossover success. “He may have been singing these funk songs to audiences that weren’t African-American,” Boseman says. “But they still got it. They got it.” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (E XPRESS)

Michel Gondry tells an unhappy love story in ‘Mood Indigo’ Film Review In a 2006 New Yorker essay on the French writer Boris Vian, Dan Halpern described Vian’s “L’Ecume des jours” as a “deeply silly” piece of work. But “Mood Indigo,” a new adaptation of Vian’s book directed by Michel Gondry, is a depressive tale of doomed love. The plot concerns the romance between a young, independent-

ly wealthy inventor named Colin and his beautiful bride, Chloe, who is stricken by a mysterious illness shortly after their honeymoon. Chloe’s malady, the symptoms of which resemble the sort of generic wasting diseases common to Old Hollywood melodramas, is caused by a water lily growing in her lung. The preciousness of this setup is tempered by the fact that the lovers are played by Romain Duris and Audrey Tautou, two of the most likeable French stars working today. They are both as adept at conveying lightness as sorrow. The way the story is told by Gon-

dry, there’s a universality to unhappiness. Vian’s text, snippets of which appears on screen, is shown being entered by an army of stenographers tapping away at vintage typewriters that have been attached to conveyer belts. The moral of “Mood Indigo” is one we are all writing in some form: Everything, including love, withers and dies. But there’s also silliness. Colin’s friend (Gad Elmaleh) is obsessed with a writer named Jean-Sol Partre (Philippe Torreton), whose name is a pun on Jean-Paul Sartre. Partre’s presence isn’t exactly a throwaway joke. The sense, in the first half of the film, that love is a n at t a inable drea m gives way to the more existential notion that happiness is just a fair y tale. lookout film Film Review In “Happy Christmas,” it’s no surprise when things get messy shortly after Jenny (Anna Kendrick) starts bunking in the basement in the home of her brother, Jeff (director

Joe Swanberg), his wife, Kelly (Melanie Lynskey), and their young son. But what is often surprising in this entertaining and fluidly acted portrait of females in flux is the specific way things get messy. Sure, Jenny engages in some predictable

unreliable-millennial behavior, but most moviegoers probably won’t anticipate that Jenny and Kelly will eventually start bonding while penning a work of erotic fiction. Though some scenes were sketched out before cameras rolled,

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You are able to heal much that is ailing those around you — at least spiritually. There are certain obstacles that clearly stand in your way. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You are in need of not just any help, but exactly the right kind of help — and you’re not quite sure where to find it yet. Keep looking! LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You’ve been relying on a certain talent to see you through difficult times, but today you may be required to demonstrate a different one. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You often see things in a grand manner, but today you’ll want to take particular note of the most minute details. Avoid generalizations. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Your previous experiences serve you well, but the most important tool in your kit right now is self-awareness.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Potential is increasing at this time; however, you may feel as though you have a great deal to work with but little to work for — for now. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You must remain true to yourself throughout the entire day, even when it requires you to turn down an especially attractive offer.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
