All Roads Lead to 1995 Bombing Man thinks brother’s death is tied to FBI’s Oklahoma City probe

SCAN CODE AND SAVETOYOUR SMARTPHONE REDEEM AT FESTIVAL FOR PRIZE*

*While supplies last

Backstory On April 19, 1995, Timothy McVeigh, right, parked a rental truck outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City and detonated a fertilizer bomb, killing 168 people. McVeigh and Terry Nichols were convicted in the attack and McVeigh was executed in 2001. In the immediate aftermath of the bombing, police were looking for a John Doe No. 2 who was said to be in the truck with McVeigh. But the government later asserted that McVeigh was alone. Jesse Trentadue said that his brother Kenneth was flown to Oklahoma several months after the bombing and died in a federal holding cell in what was labeled a suicide. His body had 41 wounds and bruises that Jesse — at top with a photo of a bruised Kenneth — believes were the result of a beating. Jesse’s best guess is that his brother died in an interrogation gone wrong. (AP)

One man’s quest to explain his brother’s mysterious jail cell death 19 years ago has rekindled longdormant questions about whether others were involved in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. What some consider a far-flung conspiracy theory will be at the forefront during a trial set to begin today in Salt Lake City. The Freedom of Information Act lawsuit was brought by Salt Lake City attorney Jesse Trentadue against the FBI. He says the agency won’t release security camera videos that show a second person was with Timothy McVeigh when he parked a truck outside the Oklahoma City federal building and detonated a bomb, killing 168 people. The government claims McVeigh was alone. Unsatisfied by the FBI’s previous explanations, U.S. District Judge Clark Waddoups has ordered the agency to explain why it can’t find videos from the bombing that are mentioned in evidence logs. Trentadue believes the presence of a second suspect in the truck

explains why his brother, Kenneth Trentadue, was flown to Oklahoma several months after the bombing, where he died in a holding cell in what was called a suicide. His brother bore a striking resemblance to the police sketch that officials sent out after the bombing based on witness descriptions of the enigmatic suspect “John Doe No. 2,” who was the same height, build and complexion. “I did not start out to solve the Oklahoma City bombing, I started out for justice for my brother’s murder,” Trentadue said. “But along the way, every path I took, every lead I got, took me to the bombing.” The FBI says it can’t find anything to suggest the videos exist and says it would be “unreasonably burdensome” to do a search that would take a single staff person more than 18 months to conduct. Trentadue says a Secret Service document written shortly after the bombing describes footage showing suspects, plural, exiting the truck minutes before the bomb went off. The FBI has released 30 video recordings to Trentadue, but none shows the blast or McVeigh’s arrival. If he wins at trial, Trentadue hopes to be able to search for the tapes himself rather than having to accept the FBI’s answer that they don’t exist. TIM TALLEY AND BR ADY McCOMBS (AP)

The Germophobe’s Go-To Gesture When it comes to preventing the spread of germs, maybe President Barack Obama is on to something with his fondness for fist bumps. The familiar knocking of knuckles spreads only one-twentieth the amount of bacteria that a handshake does, researchers report. So fist bumps seem to be the wisest greeting, especially during cold and flu season, said researcher David Whitworth of Aberystwyth University in Wales. The results are being published today online in the American Journal of Infection Control. (AP)

Doctors Falling Victim to Ebola Death, illness strike physicians treating W. African outbreak

Meanwhile …

One of Liberia’s most high-profile doctors has died of Ebola, officials said Sunday, and an American physician is being treated for the deadly virus, highlighting the risks facing health workers trying to combat an outbreak that has killed more than 670 people in three West African countries — the largest ever recorded. A second American, a missionary working in the Liberian capital, has also taken ill and is being treated in isolation there, said the pastor of a Charlotte, N.C., church that sponsored her work. Nigerian authorities raced to stop the spread of Ebola on Saturday after a man sick with the virus brought it by plane to Lagos, Nigeria, Africa’s largest city. The fact that the traveler from Liberia could board an international flight raised new fears that other passengers could take the disease beyond Africa. Donetsk, Ukraine Ukrainian armed forces mounted a major onslaught against pro-Russia separatist fighters Sunday in an attempt to gain control over the area where a Malaysia Airlines plane was downed earlier this month. The U.S. State Department, meanwhile, released satellite images that it says back up its claims that rockets have been fired from Russia into eastern Ukraine and heavy artillery for separatists has also crossed the border. A four-page document released by the State Department seems to show blast marks from where rockets were launched and craters where they landed. Officials said the images, sourced from the U.S. Director of National Intelligence, show heavy weapons fired between July 21 and July 26 — after the July 17 downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. Demolition and scrapping will take an estimated two years, but first, the wreck will be searched for any remains of an Indian waiter, the only body never found despite repeated missions by divers who swam through the ship when it lay on its side outside the port of Giglio. The Concordia struck a reef off Tuscany’s coast on Jan. 13, 2012, and capsized, killing 32 people. (AP)

Rush hour has officially changed

‘It’s Time to Ride!’

After Metro began testing the Silver Line last week, some riders may have discovered their commutes were improved, others found them altered in a less than favorable way. During non-peak hours, though, all lines will either see the same or additional service. (T WP)

The most expensive transportation project in the Washington region’s history rolled down 11.7 miles of new track this weekend. “Welcome aboard the Silver Line!” Metro General Manager Richard Sarles declared, introducing a long list of speakers at the dedication ceremony Saturday. “It’s time to ride!” Here is where things stand after the ribbon cutting. ( THE WASHINGTON POST )

Silver Line Trains will run every six minutes during rush hour. During non-rush periods, the trains will run every 12 to 20 minutes.

Commuters boarding at the three stations west of East Falls Church — West Falls Church, Dunn Loring and Vienna — will see a decrease in the number of trains each hour during the morning rush from 19 to 11. Commuters going from downtown to the five stops between New Carrollton and Minnesota Ave. will see the number of trains during the morning rush hour drop from 14 to 11 per hour. Those closer to the city will find the drops offset by Silver Line trains.

Blue Line The Blue Line, which will see two fewer trains per hour, will now run every 12 minutes, about four minutes less often than the current average. To help alleviate crowding, Metro will convert several six-car trains into eight-car trains during rush hour. Riders from Alexandria and South Arlington facing a long wait may want to consider taking Yellow Line trains and switching at L’Enfant Plaza. Most other riders will be able to hop aboard Silver Line trains, which will increase the number of trains per hour.

Yellow Line During rush periods, Yellow Line trains will increase by two trains in each direction per hour to help offset the decrease in Blue Line trains.

Within the first few hours of operation on Saturday, 10,000 people entered or exited one of the Silver Line stations. Some stood in line for hours to snag a spot on the first ride.

People love to geek out about public transit …

About noon Saturday, when the gates opened, several hundred people were in line outside the Wiehle station, waiting to board the inaugural train. Steven Renard said his family delayed a trip to Bethany Beach, Del., so they could attend the opening-day festivities. It was a good day to be a transit nerd, said Stephanie Taylor, who was among the first to ride on the Silver Line. “I love, love public

“After today, you can never be the first one.” — ERIC GOLDSTEIN, WHO SAID HE TOOK A BUS FROM BALLSTON TO TYSONS CORNER, VA., TO BE AMONG THE FIRST TO BOARD A SILVER LINE TRAIN. “HOPEFULLY THE SILVER LINE WILL RUN WELL FOR A WHILE BEFORE IT HAS PROBLEMS,” HE ADDED.

4 transportation,” she said, just after snapping a selfie aboard the train. Carlos Barnhart, a rising fourthgrader in Prince George’s County, Md., has been following the Silver Line’s progress on TV. His mom brought him and his brother to the Largo station so they could be among the first to take the Silver Line heading west. “It’s like one of the funnest things I’ve done in my whole entire life,” he said.

Reggie Watkins, 50, took on a test ride Saturday from Largo, Md., to his office in Tysons, Va., to see if the Silver Line would work for his commute. Watkins wanted to see if the trip would take longer than his one-hour commute by car. “If it takes longer than driving, it’s not going to happen,” Watkins said. He said he was a bit concerned when the first Silver Line train left Largo

“We have to … drive past two or three stations to get to where we can park.” — JOHN LUCA S, WHO LIVES ABOUT A MILE FROM TYSONS, ON THE DECISION NOT TO INCLUDE PARKING AT FOUR OF THE FIVE NEW SILVER LINE STOPS

A few hours after the inauguraltrain hoopla ended and a lazy Saturday quiet had descended on the five new stations, Rosanna Cohen and her husband came to the Spring Hill station, a structure so modern, airy and filled with light that it brings to mind an airport terminal. “Gorgeous,” said Cohen, 59, an interior designer.

5

… others are less impressed about 20 minutes late. “It’s messed up already,” Watkins said, “but I know they need to get the kinks out.” Other riders expressed concern even before opening day. Laura Larrimore, who started a “Save the Blue Line” website in April, said: “We understand we need to share the tunnel, but these [cuts to the Blue Line] seem way more severe than they need to be.”

New stations are nice and shiny …

… but not free of glitches

Like any other day on Metro, there were malfunctions Saturday. A broken escalator slowed riders at McLean. A worker fiddled with a broken fare card machine at Tysons Corner. And trains were delayed, if only slightly, to allow a train filled with VIPs to go first. “Didn’t expect the first day to go smoothly, did you?” cracked a Metro transit cop.

Cover Story Line’s First Driver Starts Smooth — With a Smile Of the hundreds of people squished onto Saturday’s first Silver Line train, only one had an assigned seat: operator Detrick Washington. The 47-year-old D.C. native, who’s worked for Metro for 12 years, was also tapped to operate the special train that delivered a car full of VIPs to the opening ceremony earlier in the morning. What was his reaction when his supervisor told him he’d been selected for this high-profile gig? “I was astounded. And then nervous and excited,” said Washington, although he didn’t exhibit any jitters after safely dropping off Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and a host of other dignitaries. “The key thing was knowing I

had a job to do. Get them there,” Washington said. (McAuliffe offered a glowing review in his remarks, saying that the train had been both “smooth” and “on time.”) Washington knows this route better than almost anyone at Metro. He’s been training other operators in how to handle the new 11.7-mile stretch of track — teaching them how to maneuver out of the yard, navigate the curves and pronounce the station names. “Instead of ‘Mack-Leen,’ it’s ‘Micklane,’ ” he noted. After making the trip so many times, Washington has even decided on a favorite view: It’s right at Spring Hill, where he can fantasize about buying something from the Aston Martin dealership. He didn’t need a luxury sports car to attract attention Saturday.

How did the Silver Line get its name?

VICKY HALLETT (EXPRESS)

Reston, Va.

DID YOU KNOW?

Detrick Washington’s pro tip: “McLean” is pronounced “Micklane,” not “Mack-Leen.”

As the Wiehle-Reston East station opened for business, the most dedicated passengers pushed their way to the front, pressing against the glass behind Washington to snap photos and shoot videos. “This is the first Silver Line train to Largo Town Center,” he announced to hollers from the crowd. “Welcome aboard!” There were a few hiccups along

the 75-minute journey to Maryland, including a brief pause shortly after starting off. That didn’t seem to matter to those on board, many just along for the historic ride. And Washington remained as cool as ever as he manned the levers. After pulling into the final station, he summed up the experience in one word: “Fun.” VICK Y HALLET T (E XPRESS)

Lance Wyman, who designed the Metrorail map, floated the idea of a Cherry Blossom Line. Metro toyed with the idea of simply making it a spur of the Orange Line. The Washington Post’s Robert Thomson said the newspaper may have had a hand in the name. Metro spokesman Dan Stessel offers some support for that theory: “I have heard that it was dubbed the Silver Line at some point many years ago by The Washington Post, and it just kind of stuck.”

What does it cost to ride the full line?

$5.90

The amount it would cost to go end to end on the Silver Line during rush hour. The 70-minute trip from Wiehle-Reston East to Largo Town Center (or vice versa) will cost $3.60 offpeak. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Judge Overturns D.C.’s Gun-Carrying Ban The city’s attorney general plans to seek a stay of the ruling Washington A federal judge declared Saturday that one of D.C.’s main gun control laws is unconstitutional and ordered that its enforcement be halted. The ruling orders the city to end its prohibition against carrying a pistol in public. The D.C. attorney general’s office said Sunday that it will seek a stay of a judge’s ruling in order to keep guns off the streets

while the city decides whether to appeal the federal ruling. In the meantime, the status of the District’s ban against carrying handguns in public was unclear. Legal experts said that all parties in a lawsuit typically must be given the opportunity to appeal a ruling before it takes effect. But lawyers on the winning side of the suit said that they interpret the judge’s ruling to be effective immediately. Ted Gest, a spokesman for the city’s Office of the Attorney General, said Sunday that the office would not comment on it other than to say that the office planned to seek

6 Inducted Into Hall Of Fame Baseball Frank Thomas choked back tears, Joe Torre apologized for leaving people out of his speech and Tony La Russa said he felt uneasy. Being enshrined in the Hall of Fame can have those effects, even on the greats. Thomas, pitchers Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, and managers Bobby Cox, Torre and La Russa were inducted into the baseball shrine Sunday, and all paid special tribute to their families before an adoring crowd of nearly 50,000. “I’m speechless. Thanks for having me in your club,” Thomas said, getting emotional as he remembered his late father. “Frank Sr., I know you’re watching. Without you, I know 100 percent I wouldn’t be here in Cooperstown today.” The day was a reunion of sorts for the city of Atlanta. Glavine, Maddux and Cox were part of a remarkable run of success by the Braves, winning an unprecedented 14 straight division titles. “I’m truly humbled to stand here before you,” Cox said. “To Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, and I have to mention the third member of the big three — John Smoltz — I can honestly say I would not be standing here if it weren’t for you guys.” (AP)

Nationals Great American Ball Park isn’t meant for pitching, especially during the humid summer months. A ball needs to only travel 325 feet down the right field line or 328 feet down the left field line to land over the fence. Balls hit hard in the air more often than not leave the stadium. But this stadium hadn’t met the likes of Doug Fister until Sunday. Of all the starters that took the mound here this weekend, matchups fit for a fall series, Fister (10-2) delivered perhaps the finest performance, a continuation of his brilliant season. Pitching in Cincinnati’s bandbox for the first time, Fister mowed through the Reds lineup with ease. He worked quickly, filled up the strike zone, gave his defense plenty of groundballs and fired seven

Gruden, Shanahan Differences Showing Two things stand out about Jay Gruden just three days into his first training camp as coach of the Washington Redskins: One, he’s a firm believer in teaching strong fundamentals and a physical style of football, and two, he believes in trusting his assistants to do their jobs. Those beliefs represent just a few of the changes from the failed Mike Shanahan era to the as-yetuntested Gruden era. Saturday marked the first day in pads for the Redskins, but even back in the offseason, Gruden talked about the importance of having a physical football team. The

Jenkins struggled mightily in his rookie season. He dressed for only five games and recorded one tackle. weekend sessions here featured lively, physical practices. Returning players admitted they competed harder than they had in previous years, and they attribute part of that to more emphasis on practicing in pads. The players wore pads Saturday and they’ll wear them again today. “It’s always good to get out there in pads,” safety Ryan Clark said. “I mean, you play football in pads. I talked about it [Friday]. Everybody thought it was a big deal that I had on pants, and I was like, ‘Well, we don’t play in shorts.’ So I think it’s good that we get in pads. Physicality wins football games. We have to get used to being physical.” Gruden also differs from Shanahan in his approach to coaching and delegating. Shanahan let his assistants coach during practices, but in meetings and at times during games, he dictated how he

The 29-year-old Sicilian, who called himself “a flag-bearer of antidoping” during the race, finished in a bunch behind Marcel Kittel, who won the 21st stage in a sprint finish. After cruising in 24 seconds after Kittel — a German who got his fourth stage win — Nibali received pats on the back, kissed his wife and infant daughter, and was mobbed by cameras as race organizers hustled him away to prepare for the awards ceremony. NBC

TV THIS WEEK

TONIGHT, 8 P.M.

‘Running Wild With Bear Grylls’ (NBC) Zac Efron, above right, has shown his talents in “High School Musical” and the recent “Neighbors,” but how is he at wilderness challenges? This series premiere answers that, in the first of the reality show’s one-on-one celebrity encounters with adventurer Bear Grylls, above left.

Ever since Oscar winners realized that the “stigma” about appearing on TV didn’t exist anymore, television has been filled with success stories of A-listers taking their talents to the small screen. Just ask Matthew McConaughey, Jon Voight, Maggie Smith or Kevin Spacey, who all nabbed Emmy nominations this year. Then there’s Halle Berry in CBS’s surprising summer hit “Extant.” Berry gets the goodwill of showing her range on TV while only committing for a certain number of episodes, as it’s a “limited series.” It’s a win-win. However, for every feel-good example, there are some very high-profile actors who set their sights on television, only to be sorely disappointed. Just because it might be a smaller screen doesn’t mean it’s easy to succeed. Here are some Academy Award winners who tried to carry a series in the past several years, but for one reason or another, found long-term TV success elusive. EMILY YAHR (THE WASHINGTON POST )

TUESDAY, 10 P.M.

‘Raising Asia’ (LIFE) This new docu-series follows YouTube sensation Asia Monet Ray, who came in third on the first season of “Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition,” and her mother, Kristie, as they try to take the 8-yearold starlet’s career to the next level.

4 Robin Williams

‘The Crazy Ones’ After getting his start on “Mork & Mindy,” Williams won critics’ approval and an Oscar for his role in “Good Will Hunting.” Williams’ highly anticipated return to television in 2013 had a quick end — ratings were solid, but not high enough for a CBS comedy. Some thought he might get an Emmy nomination for his work as an eccentric ad executive but he was snubbed there, too.

WEDNESDAY, 9 P.M.

‘Sharknado 2: The Second One’ (SYFY) In 2013’s campy “Sharknado,” giant sharks plucked from the ocean by a waterspout terrorize residents of Los Angeles. This time, a freak weather system unleashes a finny fright show on the Big Apple.

THURSDAY, 10 P.M.

‘The Honorable Woman’ (SUN) Maggie Gyllenhaal, right, stars in this new series about a woman rebuilding her late father’s Israeli arms trade into an organization that promotes peace between Israel and Palestine. A secret from her past threatens her recent appointment to the House of Lords. (TRIBUNE MEDIA /E XPRESS)

1 Dustin Hoffman

2

‘Luck’ Everything started out fine when HBO debuted this horse-racing drama starring Hoffman as a high-stakes gambler — unfortunately, several horses died during production of the series and there was plenty of outrage. Though HBO stressed that it “maintained the highest safety standards possible,” the network eventually canceled the series while filming the second season.

$44M

Marcia Gay Harden

‘Trophy Wife’ With short stints on “Law & Order: SVU” and “The Newsroom,” Harden (who won an Oscar for her role in “Pollock”) was ready for a starring role, playing opposite Bradley Whitford as one of his two ex-wives. To the disappointment of critics everywhere, ABC canceled this niche favorite (and very low-rated) sitcom in May after just one season.

3 Forest Whitaker

‘Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior’ Normally, starring on a CBS procedural is a near-certain way to have steady employment forever. Sadly, this spinoff didn’t gain much traction, and the network canceled it after 13 episodes. Meanwhile, Whitaker (Oscar winner for his role as dictator Idi Amin in “The Last King of Scotland”) bounced back to movies with little impact.

5 Octavia Spencer

‘Murder, She Wrote’ reboot Spencer was a favorite after her Academy Award-winning turn in “The Help,” and she showed off her skills on TV with spots on “30 Rock” and “Mom”; so the Internet lit up when it was announced in October that she was a part of this classic remake. However, this buzzy spinoff for NBC didn’t even get off the ground, and was scrapped in January before it even started filming.

The box office take of “Lucy” this weekend. The Scarlett Johansson thriller topped “Hercules,” starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, which opened this weekend to $29 million. In its third week of release, “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” came in third, earning $16.4 million. (AP)

“But it is long past time to repeal this version of Prohibition.” — THE EDITORIAL BOARD AT NYTIMES.COM

argues that the federal government should repeal the ban on marijuana. In a post published to the news site late Saturday, the board says that marijuana use isn’t any more dangerous than moderate alcohol or tobacco consumption, but also states that the minimum age of purchase should be 21 — like it is for alcohol.

“Asking someone whether they prefer ‘Family Guy’ or ‘The Simpsons’ is a bit like asking if they prefer the Beatles or the Rolling Stones: you can like both, but you must demonstrate a strong allegiance for one over the other.” — EJ DICKSON AT DAILYDOT.COM knows fan loyalty is

about to be tested in the animation world. A fiveminute trailer for the long-anticipated “Simpsons”“Family Guy” crossover, dubbed “The Simpsons Guy,” premiered Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con. In the episode, which is set to premiere Sept. 28, fans can expect to see Bart Simpson teaching Stewie Griffin how to prank call Moe’s Tavern, and Homer Simpson and Peter Griffin bonding over doughnuts and battling it out over beer preferences.

“To the writers who were not properly attributed and anyone who ever read my byline, I am sincerely sorry.” — @BENNYJOHNSON VIA TWITTER

addresses being fired Friday from Buzzfeed. Plagiarism accusations against the former Viral Politics editor began circulating on Twitter last week. According to a post from Ben Smith, the media site’s editor in chief, “41 instances of sentences or phrases copied word for word from other sites” were discovered in an internal investigation of Johnson.

“They don’t call us Flori-duh for nothing.” — MARC CAPUTO AT MIAMIHERALD.COM is resigned

to the seemingly national consensus about the Sunshine State — especially after the Thursday gaffe by Rep. Curt Clawson. The freshman congressman whose predecessor was forced to resign after a cocaine-possession arrest, repeatedly addressed two U.S. officials as if they were representatives of India. “I am familiar with your country; I love your country,” he said to Nisha Biswal and Arun Kumar, according to the Herald. Both Biswal and Kumar are Americans with senior positions in the State Department and Commerce Department, respectively.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Insist that your opinion be considered — or, if you must, hold your tongue. Those are the only two options open to you.
