McLean station is the first of the five new Silver Line stations branching off of the existing system, located two miles from central McLean. Several large employers are nearby.

Backstory On April 19, 1995, Timothy McVeigh, right, parked a rental truck outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City and detonated a fertilizer bomb, killing 168 people. McVeigh and Terry Nichols were convicted in the attack and McVeigh was executed in 2001. In the immediate aftermath of the bombing, police were looking for a John Doe No. 2 who was said to be in the truck with McVeigh. But the government later asserted that McVeigh was alone. Jesse Trentadue said that his brother Kenneth was flown to Oklahoma several months after the bombing and died in a federal holding cell in what was labeled a suicide. His body had 41 wounds and bruises that Jesse — at top with a photo of a bruised Kenneth — believes were the result of a beating. Jesse’s best guess is that his brother died in an interrogation gone wrong. (AP)

One man’s quest to explain his brother’s mysterious jail cell death 19 years ago has rekindled longdormant questions about whether others were involved in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. What some consider a far-flung conspiracy theory will be at the forefront during a trial set to begin today in Salt Lake City. The Freedom of Information Act lawsuit was brought by Salt Lake City attorney Jesse Trentadue against the FBI. He says the agency won’t release security camera videos that show a second person was with Timothy McVeigh when he parked a truck outside the Oklahoma City federal building and detonated a bomb, killing 168 people. The government claims McVeigh was alone. Unsatisfied by the FBI’s previous explanations, U.S. District Judge Clark Waddoups has ordered the agency to explain why it can’t find videos from the bombing that are mentioned in evidence logs. Trentadue believes the presence of a second suspect in the truck

explains why his brother, Kenneth Trentadue, was flown to Oklahoma several months after the bombing, where he died in a holding cell in what was called a suicide. His brother bore a striking resemblance to the police sketch that officials sent out after the bombing based on witness descriptions of the enigmatic suspect “John Doe No. 2,” who was the same height, build and complexion. “I did not start out to solve the Oklahoma City bombing, I started out for justice for my brother’s murder,” Trentadue said. “But along the way, every path I took, every lead I got, took me to the bombing.” The FBI says it can’t find anything to suggest the videos exist and says it would be “unreasonably burdensome” to do a search that would take a single staff person more than 18 months to conduct. Trentadue says a Secret Service document written shortly after the bombing describes footage showing suspects, plural, exiting the truck minutes before the bomb went off. The FBI has released 30 video recordings to Trentadue, but none shows the blast or McVeigh’s arrival. The familiar knocking of knuckles spreads only one-twentieth the amount of bacteria that a handshake does, researchers report. So fist bumps seem to be the wisest greeting, especially during cold and flu season, said researcher David Whitworth of Aberystwyth University in Wales. The results are being published today online in the American Journal of Infection Control. (AP)

3 Days On, No Arrests in Hunt for Carjack Killers The hunt for two Philadelphia carjackers who rammed their stolen SUV into a family, killing three children, entered its third day Sunday, and investigators said they’re hopeful the assailants will soon be caught. More than 70 churches, mosques and synagogues have adopted “Laundry Love,” outreach that welcomes the needy to wash their clothes for free, complete with detergent and dryer sheets. “This is our church,” said Shannon Kassoff, one of the organizers of Laundry Love in Huntington Beach, Calif. “It is probably the best way to be involved in other people’s lives.” (E XPRESS) during thunderstorms that swept through Southern California. Officials said 13 people, including the teen, were treated after they were struck at Venice Beach in Los Angeles. Nine were taken to hospitals, where two are in critical condition. Doctors Falling Victim to Ebola Death, illness strike physicians treating W. African outbreak

One of Liberia’s most high-profile doctors has died of Ebola, officials said Sunday, and an American physician is being treated for the deadly virus, highlighting the risks facing health workers trying to combat an outbreak that has killed more than 670 people in three West African countries — the largest ever recorded. A second American, a missionary working in the Liberian capital, has also taken ill and is being treated in isolation there, said the pastor of a Charlotte, N.C., church that sponsored her work. Rush hour has officially changed

After Metro began testing the Silver Line last week, some riders may have discovered their commutes were improved, others found them altered in a less than favorable way. During non-peak hours, though, all lines will either see the same or additional service. (T WP)
The most expensive transportation project in the Washington region’s history rolled down 11.7 miles of new track this weekend. “Welcome aboard the Silver Line!” Metro General Manager Richard Sarles declared, introducing a long list of speakers at the dedication ceremony Saturday. “It’s time to ride!” Here is where things stand after the ribbon cutting. Silver Line Trains will run every six minutes during rush hour. During non-rush periods, the trains will run every 12 to 20 minutes.
Commuters boarding at the three stations west of East Falls Church — West Falls Church, Dunn Loring and Vienna — will see a decrease in the number of trains each hour during the morning rush from 19 to 11. Commuters going from downtown to the five stops between New Carrollton and Minnesota Ave. will see the number of trains during the morning rush hour drop from 14 to 11 per hour. Those closer to the city will find the drops offset by Silver Line trains.
Blue Line The Blue Line, which will see two fewer trains per hour, will now run every 12 minutes, about four minutes less often than the current average. To help alleviate crowding, Metro will convert several six-car trains into eight-car trains during rush hour. Riders from Alexandria and South Arlington facing a long wait may want to consider taking Yellow Line trains and switching at L’Enfant Plaza. Most other riders will be able to hop aboard Silver Line trains, which will increase the number of trains per hour.
Yellow Line During rush periods, Yellow Line trains will increase by two trains in each direction per hour to help offset the decrease in Blue Line trains.

Reggie Watkins, 50, took on a test ride Saturday from Largo, Md., to his office in Tysons, Va., to see if the Silver Line would work for his commute. Watkins wanted to see if the trip would take longer than his one-hour commute by car. “If it takes longer than driving, it’s not going to happen,” Watkins said. Like any other day on Metro, there were malfunctions Saturday. A broken escalator slowed riders at McLean. A worker fiddled with a broken fare card machine at Tysons Corner. And trains were delayed, if only slightly, to allow a train filled with VIPs to go first. “Didn’t expect the first day to go smoothly, did you?” cracked a Metro transit cop.

Cover Story Line’s First Driver Starts Smooth — With a Smile Of the hundreds of people squished onto Saturday’s first Silver Line train, only one had an assigned seat: operator Detrick Washington. The 47-year-old D.C. native, who’s worked for Metro for 12 years, was also tapped to operate the special train that delivered a car full of VIPs to the opening ceremony earlier in the morning. What was his reaction when his supervisor told him he’d been selected for this high-profile gig? “I was astounded. And then nervous and excited,” said Washington, although he didn’t exhibit any jitters after safely dropping off Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and a host of other dignitaries. “The key thing was knowing I
had a job to do. Get them there,” Washington said. (McAuliffe offered a glowing review in his remarks, saying that the train had been both “smooth” and “on time.”) Washington knows this route better than almost anyone at Metro. He’s been training other operators in how to handle the new 11.7-mile stretch of track — teaching them how to maneuver out of the yard, navigate the curves and pronounce the station names. “Instead of ‘Mack-Leen,’ it’s ‘Micklane,’ ” he noted. After making the trip so many times, Washington has even decided on a favorite view: It’s right at Spring Hill, where he can fantasize about buying something from the Aston Martin dealership. He didn’t need a luxury sports car to attract attention Saturday.

As the Wiehle-Reston East station opened for business, the most dedicated passengers pushed their way to the front, pressing against the glass behind Washington to snap photos and shoot videos. “This is the first Silver Line train to Largo Town Center,” he announced to hollers from the crowd. “Welcome aboard!” There were a few hiccups along
the 75-minute journey to Maryland, including a brief pause shortly after starting off. That didn’t seem to matter to those on board, many just along for the historic ride. Lance Wyman, who designed the Metrorail map, floated the idea of a Cherry Blossom Line. Metro toyed with the idea of simply making it a spur of the Orange Line. The Washington Post’s Robert Thomson said the newspaper may have had a hand in the name. Judge Overturns D.C.’s Gun-Carrying Ban The city’s attorney general plans to seek a stay of the ruling Washington A federal judge declared Saturday that one of D.C.’s main gun control laws is unconstitutional and ordered that its enforcement be halted. The ruling orders the city to end its prohibition against carrying a pistol in public. The D.C. attorney general’s office said Sunday that it will seek a stay of a judge’s ruling in order to keep guns off the streets
while the city decides whether to appeal the federal ruling. In the meantime, the status of the District’s ban against carrying handguns in public was unclear. Legal experts said that all parties in a lawsuit typically must be given the opportunity to appeal a ruling before it takes effect. But lawyers on the winning side of the suit said that they interpret the judge’s ruling to be effective immediately. Ted Gest, a spokesman for the city’s Office of the Attorney General, said Sunday that the office would not comment on it other than to say that the office planned to seek

6 Inducted Into Hall Of Fame Baseball Frank Thomas choked back tears, Joe Torre apologized for leaving people out of his speech and Tony La Russa said he felt uneasy. Being enshrined in the Hall of Fame can have those effects, even on the greats. Thomas, pitchers Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, and managers Bobby Cox, Torre and La Russa were inducted into the baseball shrine Sunday, and all paid special tribute to their families before an adoring crowd of nearly 50,000. “I’m speechless. Thanks for having me in your club,” Thomas said, getting emotional as he remembered his late father. “Frank Sr., I know you’re watching. Without you, I know 100 percent I wouldn’t be here in Cooperstown today.” The day was a reunion of sorts for the city of Atlanta. Nationals Great American Ball Park isn’t meant for pitching, especially during the humid summer months. A ball needs to only travel 325 feet down the right field line or 328 feet down the left field line to land over the fence. Balls hit hard in the air more often than not leave the stadium. But this stadium hadn’t met the likes of Doug Fister until Sunday. This series premiere answers that, in the first of the reality show’s one-on-one celebrity encounters with adventurer Bear Grylls, above left.
Ever since Oscar winners realized that the “stigma” about appearing on TV didn’t exist anymore, television has been filled with success stories of A-listers taking their talents to the small screen. Just ask Matthew McConaughey, Jon Voight, Maggie Smith or Kevin Spacey, who all nabbed Emmy nominations this year. Then there’s Halle Berry in CBS’s surprising summer hit “Extant.” Berry gets the goodwill of showing her range on TV while only committing for a certain number of episodes, as it’s a “limited series.” It’s a win-win. However, for every feel-good example, there are some very high-profile actors who set their sights on television, only to be sorely disappointed. Just because it might be a smaller screen doesn’t mean it’s easy to succeed. ‘The Crazy Ones’ After getting his start on “Mork & Mindy,” Williams won critics’ approval and an Oscar for his role in “Good Will Hunting.” Williams’ highly anticipated return to television in 2013 had a quick end — ratings were solid, but not high enough for a CBS comedy. Some thought he might get an Emmy nomination for his work as an eccentric ad executive but he was snubbed there, too.

Sadly, this spinoff didn’t gain much traction, and the network canceled it after 13 episodes. Meanwhile, Whitaker (Oscar winner for his role as dictator Idi Amin in “The Last King of Scotland”) bounced back to movies with little impact.

‘Murder, She Wrote’ reboot Spencer was a favorite after her Academy Award-winning turn in “The Help,” and she showed off her skills on TV with spots on “30 Rock” and “Mom”; so the Internet lit up when it was announced in October that she was a part of this classic remake. However, this buzzy spinoff for NBC didn’t even get off the ground, and was scrapped in January before it even started filming.

A homeless man was arrested on Friday in New York for delivering threatening letters to Rihanna’s SoHo home. According to the criminal complaint obtained by The New York Daily News, the man “repeatedly called her a b--ch” in the letters and threatened to break into her apartment.
