You Should See What Happens When Somebody Passes Gas Emergency officials called to check out a suspected gas leak in Germany found a culprit they didn’t expect: a fridge full of rotting food. Police in Braunschweig said Thursday that the fire service evacuated an apartment block in the city Wednesday night after being alerted to the smell of gas by a resident. They then searched for the source and traced it to a fridge in the apartment of the woman who had alerted authorities. (AP) UNPLEASANT

Cave Holds Ancient Animal Bones Scientists to explore eight-story-deep hole in Wyoming

For the first time in three decades, scientists are about to revisit one of North America’s most remarkable troves of ancient fossils: the bones of tens of thousands of animals piled at least 30 feet deep at the bottom of a sinkhole-type cave. Natural Trap Cave in northcentral Wyoming is 85 feet deep and almost impossible to see until you’re standing right next to it. Over tens of thousands of years, many, many animals — including now-extinct mammoths, shortfaced bears, American lions and American cheetahs — shared the misfortune of not noticing the 15-foot-wide opening until they were plunging to their deaths. Now, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management is preparing to reopen a metal grate over the opening to offer scientists what may be their best look yet at the variety of critters that roamed the foothills of

(BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT/AP)

Cheyenne, Wyo.

“One can only hope that, as a researcher, you’re able to leave. It’s an imposing hole in the ground. But one that actually has very important scientific value.” — Brent Breithaupt, Bureau of Land Management regional paleontologist, who visited the cave as a college student the last time it was open to scientists

the Bighorn Mountains during the planet’s last glacial period around 25,000 years ago. Des Moines University paleontologist Julie Meachen said she has

been getting ready to lead the international team of a dozen researchers and assistants by hitting the climbing gym. “I’m pretty terrified,” Meachen

admitted Wednesday. She hasn’t done any real climbing before, she said, and the only way in is to rappel down. The only way out is an eight-story, singlerope climb all the way back up. The cave is perpetually cold and clammy, with temperatures in the mid-40s and humidity around 98 percent. Even Bureau of Land Management regional paleontologist Brent Breithaupt, who isn’t one to get the willies from lots of animal bones, describes it as a tad creepy. Some mammal remains from the cave could be more than 100,000 years old, Breithaupt said. Meachen hopes the remains are sufficiently preserved in the cold, sheltered environment to contain snippets of genetic information. Alan Cooper with the Australian Centre for Ancient DNA at the University of Adelaide will attempt to retrieve fragments of mitochondrial DNA from the bones, Meachen said. Such analysis wasn’t possible the last time scientists dug in the cave and could shed light on how the animals were related to their modern counterparts and each other. (AP)

Oh, Canada! A caravan of Canadians bringing jugs with 1,000 liters of water arrived in Detroit on Thursday in a protest against the bankrupt city shutting off water to residents who haven’t paid their bills. The Canadians rallied outside City Hall before heading to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church to deliver the water. The city has stepped up collection efforts; water shutoffs rose from 500 in March to 7,200 in June. On Monday, shutoffs were suspended for 15 days. DINO-SOARS?

Birds — and Beasts — of a Feather It’s possible that all dinosaurs had feathers. Scientists previously believed that only avian dinosaurs sported feathers along with scales. But the discovery of fossilized feathers on a newly identified dinosaur — Kulindadromeus zabaikalicus — far removed from the bird lineage means that feathers likely were more widespread in the dino world. The discovery, published Thursday in Science, could change scientists’ understanding of how feathers evolved. While the bristle-like feathers on this dino likely served as insulation, the more advanced feathers, found around its legs, were probably decorative and used to attract mates, researchers said. U.N. School Caught in Crossfire Both sides point fingers as shelling kills 15 at shelter

“I am telling ... both the Israelis and Hamas: You must stop fighting. Whatever grievances you may have, this is wrong.”

Gaza City, Gaza Strip

After a long day at the office, many people want to kick up their feet and turn on the TV, but new research suggests feelings of guilt over wasted time and procrastination can prevent some from benefiting from a well-deserved break.

Study Shows You May Feel Guilty Being a Couch Potato

A U.N. school in Gaza crowded with hundreds of Palestinians seeking refuge from fierce fighting came under fire Thursday, killing at least 15 civilians and leaving a sad tableau of blood-spattered pillows, blankets and children’s clothing scattered in the courtyard. Palestinian officials blamed Israel for the shelling, which wounded dozens and came on the deadliest day so far of the current round of fighting, while the Israeli military said it was investigating the strike and raised the possibility the compound was hit by Hamas rockets amid a marked increase in Islamic militant attacks in the area.

This Palestinian girl lost a relative in Thursday’s shelling of a U.N. school in Gaza.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Kimoon angrily denounced the attack, saying the killing must “stop now.” But the frantic diplomatic efforts spanning the region were running into a brick wall: Israel demands that Hamas stop firing rockets with-

out conditions, while Gaza’s Islamic militant rulers insist the sevenyear Israeli-Egyptian blockade of the territory must end first. “Many have been killed — including women and children, as well as U.N. staff,” Ban said in a

statement, but he didn’t elaborate. The U.N. said it had been trying to achieve a humanitarian pause in the fighting to allow the evacuation of civilians from the area. Kamel al-Kafarne, who was in the school, said people were boarding buses when three tank shells hit. “We were about to get out of the school, then they hit the school. They kept on shelling it,” he said. IBR AHIM BAR Z AK AND IAN DEITCH (AP)

The Study Respondents in Germany and Switzerland were asked to rate how depleted they felt after work and to what extent they used media (TV, video games) as a form of procrastination. They were then asked to rate their feelings of guilt about using media and their sense of enjoyment or vitality after.

Hours After Plane Reported Missing, Wreckage Found Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

The Result

L’OSSERVATORE ROMANO

A study published Thursday in the Journal of Communication found that people who felt most drained at the end of the work day were most likely to put off other tasks in favor of the TV or video games, but got less benefit from them because they felt guilty about procrastinating.

The Reasoning

POPE FRANCIS meets with Meriam Ibrahim — a Sudanese woman who

In a previous experiment conducted in lab settings, participants who watched entertainment media after being asked to perform work tasks felt more “vital.” But the new study shows that in real life, feelings of guilt can prevent those most in need of recovery from reaping the rewards. Researchers say the reasons could be twofold — guilt about procrastination and concern that other people would look down on low-brow entertainment.

refused to recant her Christian faith in the face of a death sentence — on Thursday blessing the woman as she cradled her infant daughter born just weeks ago in prison. The Vatican said the visit was “very affectionate.” Ibrahim was sentenced to death over charges of apostasy, but the sentence was overturned in June.

An Air Algerie jetliner carrying 116 people crashed Thursday in a rainstorm over restive Mali, and its wreckage was found near the border of neighboring Burkina Faso — the third major international aviation disaster in a week. The plane disappeared from radar screens less than an hour after takeoff, en route from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, to Algiers. French fighter jets, U.N. peacekeepers and others hunted for signs of wreckage of the MD-83 plane in Mali, where scattered separatist violence may hamper an investigation

into what happened. Families from France to Canada and beyond had been waiting anxiously for signs of Flight 5017 and their loved ones aboard. Nearly half of the passengers were French, many en route home from Africa. “Everything allows us to believe this plane crashed in Mali,” French President Francois Hollande said Thursday night. He said the crew changed its path because of “particularly difficult weather conditions.” A French official said it seems unlikely that fighters in Mali had the kind of weaponry that could shoot down a jetliner. Lizard Lust in Space: At this very moment, a Russian satellite full of geckos — (possibly) having sex — is floating around in space. The Foton-M4 research satellite launched July 19 with five geckos on board. The plan: to observe their mating activities in the zero-gravity conditions of Earth orbit. But while data is still being sent back to earth, the satellite stopped responding to commands from mission control. Experts are working to re-establish a connection; meanwhile, the lizards are being left to do as nature intended for the rest of the 60-day mission. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Iraq Elects President As Attacks Kill Dozens

U.S. Pulls Peace Corps Volunteers From Kenya

Iraqi lawmakers elected a veteran Kurdish politician Thursday to replace longserving Jalal Talabani as the country’s new president in the latest step toward forming a new government. But a series of attacks, including one on a prison convoy, killed dozens, and Islamic militants destroyed a Muslim shrine traditionally said to be the burial place of the Prophet Jonah, underscoring the challenges facing the nation. Fouad Massoum, 76, accepted the position after winning two-thirds of the votes in parliament. His election comes amid a blitz offensive by the al-Qaeda breakaway Islamic State group. (AP)

Russians Feed on Conspiracy Theories Russian news consumers are hearing plenty of explanations for the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, which killed 298 people. While the theories vary wildly, all point the finger at Ukraine. None admits the possibility that Russia may bear responsibility. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP) Ukraine tried to assassinate Putin.

The corpses were old and were planted.

Flight 17 was told to fly over conflict zone.

It was a ploy to get the West involved.

Khadija Gamzatova heard on the news that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s plane crossed flight paths with the Malaysian jet at one point and thus believes that Ukrainian government troops shot down the jet, thinking it was Putin’s plane. Ukrainian forces “wanted to shoot down our plane, but this is what they got,” she said. Interfax and Russia’s state-owned Channel 1 have advanced that theory.

Sergey S. said that “a whole lot of witnesses on the Internet shot video and said the corpses weren’t natural, that the people died a long time before [the plane crashed].” Igor Girkin, a rebel leader in eastern Ukraine, agreed with the theory. “According to the people who collected the corpses, most of the corpses were ‘not fresh’ — people died several days ago,” Girkin said.

Komsomolskaya Pravda, Russia’s most-read tabloid, claimed that Ukrainian airtraffic controllers redirected the Malaysia Airlines plane to fly directly over the conflict zone. Vitaly Trubin heard one such report on Russia 24. “Why would the dispatcher do that?” Trubin asked. “Because the [Ukrainian] government told him to. Because the [Ukrainian Security Service] told him to.”

Russian media have suggested that Ukrainian authorities orchestrated the downing to make it look like a rebel attack in hopes it would lure Western powers into military intervention. One Russian tabloid suggested that the jet was shot down by a Ukrainian military plane with American help: “A Ukrainian attack plane and an American spy satellite were following the fallen Boeing,” a report claimed.

“We sincerely don’t trust the U.S. We absolutely think you are vicious and cowardly and nasty. But then, we also really don’t know anything.” — Ivan Zassoursky, who chairs the new media department at Moscow State University

Developments Two more military aircraft carrying remains of victims from the Malaysian plane disaster arrived in the Netherlands on Thursday, while Australian and Dutch diplomats joined to promote a plan for a U.N. team to secure the crash site which has been controlled by pro-Russia rebels. Human remains continue to be found a full week after the plane went down — underlining concerns about the halting and chaotic recovery effort. Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said in a video statement that if U.S. officials indeed had the proof the plane shot down by a missile launched from the rebel-held territory, “how come they have not been made public?” (AP)

The Problem When Teens Sext Richmond The controversial case in Manassas, Va., involving a 17-year-old male who sent explicit photos of himself to his teenage girlfriend has revived a debate in Virginia over whether such conduct should be illegal at all. But advocates for a sexting law that would protect minors from felony child pornography charges have repeatedly stalled, and advocates have little hope for change. Legislation introduced in Richmond this year would have made it a misdemeanor for one minor to send electronically an explicit photo

The Two Options Because of the seriousness of the child pornography, police have come into clients’ homes with guns drawn to seize all electronic evidence, said Jonathan Phillips, a Fairfax Internet crimes prosecutor turned defense lawyer. “It’s a terrifying experience because there is no ability for law enforcement to say, ‘Well, we’re going to do it this way,’” he said. “They only have two options, yes or no, and yes is a felony.” (T WP)

of him or herself to another minor or for a minor to possess up to 10 such images of another minor. But it failed, with defenders of the current law arguing that nightmare scenarios of law enforcement overreach were unlikely. The Manassas case, in which county prosecutors filed a search warrant to take pictures of the boy’s erect penis, “helps people to understand prosecutorial discretion is

not always exercised like we think it’s going to be,” said Scott Surovell, the Democratic House delegate who introduced the sexting bill. Many schools also have a policy to expel any student accused of a felony, even if charges are never pursued, Surovell said. But the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia was opposed to the bill and similar attempts to put sexting into the state code. “We

Snobs, Unite! Hey, Bethesda and Rockville — you just got named among the Top 10 “snobbiest small cities in America.” According to the real estate website Movoto.com, these “snooty little cities” in Montgomery County, Md., have rich, well-educated, privateschool-loving, art gallery devotees who have the “most rigid of standards.” Bethesda ranked No. 2 and Rockville tied for No. 8 with Encinitas, Calif. Despite a yearlong study in 2009 and several legislative attempts, Del. Rob Bell said, “We have not come up with a way that would create a carveout for the ‘two teenagers problem’ without creating an additional concern that you have bad actors walking through that loophole and creating dangerous and problematic child pornography.” R ACHEL WEINER (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Who’s Not? Devin Mesoraco, Reds: The All-Star catcher hasn’t looked like one since the break, hitting just 1-for-15 and seeing his average drop from .304 before the break to .288 now.

In just his second season in the big leagues, Tanner Roark has been one of the most surprising reasons for the Washington Nationals’ success. He holds a 2.91 ERA, the best of any starting pitcher on the team’s roster. In 1202 ⁄ 3 innings pitched, he’s recorded a 1.127 WHIP with 90 strikeouts. “It’s just all of those weapons,” manager Matt Williams said. “He’s got the ability to change on the fly out there.” Roark is an unlikely star, given his route to the Nationals. After a 2008 stint with the independent Frontier League’s Southern Illinois Miners, where he had a 21.41 ERA in two games, Roark was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 25th round. He was traded to the Nationals’ system in 2010, and slowly worked his way up for a shot at pitching at the highest level. Called up in 2013, he’s since delivered with a calm demeanor and steady approach on the mound. Roark is a top 10 player in firstpitch strikes too, according to fangraphs.com. Heading into this weekend’s series against the Cincinnati Reds, Roark ranks eighth, throwing first-pitch strikes at a 66.4 percent clip. Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III said he didn’t play efficiently Thursday.

Slow Start For RGIII on First Day

The crowd at the first day of Redskins training camp was smaller than last year’s, and fans seemed to be less enthusiastic following the team’s 3-13 finish in 2013.

Redskins Robert Griffin III wasn’t sharp as the defense outplayed the offense in Thursday’s wet first session. Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett seemed a step ahead of offensive coordinator Sean McVay in play-calling. Outside linebacker Brian Orakpo sure looked like he deserved the franchise tag while making several good moves rushing the passer. Although the rain and the slick field often hampered receivers while route running, the defense got it done. “As an offense, we weren’t as efficient as we wanted to be today all around, including ourself,” Griffin said afterward. “But it’s a good thing to have to work through the rain and have to throw those wet footballs, have to catch those wet footballs, have to work on [handing off to running backs]. All those things.” The slow start did nothing to temper Griffin’s enthusiasm about his fresh start under Coach Jay Gruden and McVay. “ [ M cVa y] a n d [G r u d e n] have done a great job,” Griffin said. “They’ve given me a lot on my shoulders. I cherish that.” DAVE CAMPBELL (AP)

At Camp, the Thrill Is Gone The crowd was thinner than last year’s, their screaming drowned out by the steady rain. Long throws slipped through receivers’ hands. Quarterbacks danced gingerly on soggy turf. “When we first walked out and saw the rain, we were like, ‘Man, please cancel practice,’ ” cornerback DeAngelo Hall said. This round went to the weathBy Rick er. Snider With a healthy Robert Griffi n III wearing his “yin and the yang” one-sidewhite-one-side-black cleats and leggings, Washington opened its second camp Thursday at the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center in Richmond. But coach Jay Gruden’s debut generated all the excitement of a spelling bee. The crowd of 1,000 or so

— about a third the size of the smallest crowd at the team’s inaugural camp last year — focused on Griffi n’s right knee. The one that limited him last camp has fi nally healed and let him move in the pocket gracefully once again. Fans seemed cautious. Last summer’s large, hysterical crowds rivaled Beatlemania of the 1960s with nonstop chants of “RGIII” throughout practice. This time, there was only a smattering of yells by autograph seekers. Has last fall’s 3-13 season and the mediocre effort by Griffi n separated bandwagoners from camp followers? It could be that fans decided to wait for Fan Appreciation Day on Aug. 2 and joint practices

with the New England Patriots on Aug. 4-6, rather than come to everyday workouts in the rain. But there’s no doubt the magic of RGIII has dimmed since last summer. Suddenly, he’s being analyzed by fans rather than idolized. With a new coach and a new offense, Griffi n knows he’s starting anew again. “It’s just a huge feel-out process about just getting to know a new coach,” he said, “a new offense and then getting to know some of the new weapons that we have.” One of those weapons is receiver DeSean Jackson, who dropped Griffi n’s one golden

Neither was concerned about one snap in July. “One play doesn’t tell you anything about chemistry,” Griffi n said. “He knows if I miss him one time I’m going to get him the next, and if he misses something then he’ll make that play for me. That chemistry’s there.” Still, it showed Griffi n that the reps he missed while rehabbing last summer are vital this preseason. “You can never get tired of doing things the right way, and that goes for every quarterback in the league,” he said. “We’re all trying to fi nd little ways to get better, little ways to have that advantage.” And next year’s camp will once again overflow. Wiggins Signs, Countdown Starts

Tour Win In Sight For Nibali Cycling Vincenzo Nibali crushed everyone on the last mountain leg of the Tour de France on Thursday, all but ensuring he will be crowned champion when the race ends in Paris on Sunday. On the big, final climb of Stage 18, the Italian broke out of the peloton, chased down breakaway riders, and rode solo in front for the last five miles uphill. Nibali, who captured his fourth stage of the Tour, stuck out his tongue, tapped his chest, and raised a fist skyward as he finished the 90-mile leg more than a minute ahead of Thibaut Pinot of France, who was second. Rafal Majka of Poland, in third, was another two seconds back. The effort by Nibali, set to become the first Italian to win the Tour since Marco Pantani in 1998, essentially reduced the race drama to who will join him on the podium on the Champs-Elysees on Sunday. While three stages are left, Friday’s is mostly flat and unlikely to allow a breakaway rider to gain time. The last real challenge will be Saturday’s individual time trial, but Nibali’s lead is so big — 7 minutes, 10 seconds ahead of Pinot — that it would take a disaster for him to lose the yellow jersey before Sunday. (AP)

NBA Andrew Wiggins has an NBA home. Maybe a temporary one. The Cavaliers signed the No. 1 overall draft pick Thursday, a deal that prevents Wiggins from being traded for 30 days. Now that Wiggins is under contract, the league’s seldom-used 30-day rule is in effect. Wiggins has been linked to a possible blockbuster trade with Minnesota for All-Star forward Kevin Love. But any deal now involving Wiggins can’t be finalized until late August. The league’s seldom-used 30-day rule was designed to prevent teams from circumventing salary cap rules. The spirit behind the rule is that

if a rookie is traded immediately after he signs, it gives the appearance that the acquiring team is the one that is in fact signing him. Cleveland’s decision to sign Wiggins actually makes it easier to trade him. Before his deal, he had zero value on the salary cap but his contract — worth $5.5 million — could allow the Cavs

to clear enough room to take on a player like Love, who is set to earn $15.7 million next season. But with Wiggins unable to be moved by Cleveland for a month, it’s possible other teams may approach the Timberwolves to make a run at Love, arguably the league’s top power forward. “I think this is an incredibly exciting time for the league,” New York FC coach Jason Kreis said. Lampard is “a rare talent, one that scores a lot of goals from midfield, yet is also a disciplined defender and someone who reads the game brilliantly.” The news conference was held at Brooklyn Bridge Park, where several soccer fields share space on a pier in the East River. Onward and Upward for Hamid CHRIS YOUNG (AP/ THE CANADIAN PRESS)

United goalkeeper earns first selection to MLS All-Star team MLS

Bill Hamid was named to his first MLS All-Star team last week. For the D.C. United goalkeeper, it was a culmination, but it also may be the start of something bigger. Hamid became the first D.C. United academy player to sign a deal with the senior team when he inked a contract at 18 years old in 2009. Since then, it’s been a steady process of growth. “There are little joys to this job

United goalkeeper Bill Hamid has made 100 appearances in his five years at the club.

and one of them is watching these guys grow,” said United coach Ben Olsen, a member of the United roster when Hamid signed in 2009.

“One of these is watching a guy like Bill Hamid from being a young kid and naive and just learning to be a pro and making mistakes and now

to watch him year after year grow.” Olsen was speaking to the media after Sunday’s 3-1 win over Chivas USA — a match in which Hamid, now 23, made his 100th appearance for D.C. United. “It means the world to me to be recognized in that sort of light,” Hamid said of his All-Star nod. “I’m just going to go in and represent D.C. United, represent the Black and Red, represent the fans the best that I can, and do my best in trying to represent MLS as well.” The 2014 MLS All-Star Game is set for Aug. 6 in Portland, Ore. Unlike some players, Hamid clearly appreciates the All-Star recognition, Olsen said.

Soccer Friendly Fulham FC vs. D. C. United 6 p.m.,Sat. Jacksonville, Fla.

“I think some guys could take it or leave it. Bill is a guy who it means a lot to,” the coach said. “You could see when we told him.” Hamid couldn’t hide his happiness. “I got a little emotional and [United head athletic trainer Brian Goodstein] kept asking me, ‘What’s going on, bro?’ And I played it off. I think he thought I was having a baby,” Hamid said. Hamid already has U.S. national team experience, so big things could be ahead for him. Silver Line Send-Off The McLean, Tysons Corner, Greensboro and Spring Hill stations will open to the public at 11:30 a.m. and the WiehleReston East station will open shortly before noon following a ceremony. The first Silver Line train will depart Wiehle-Reston East, bound for Largo Town Center, at noon.

Isn’t this thing supposed to go to Dulles? The Silver Line will eventually run directly to the airport, but that won’t happen until Phase II is completed. That isn’t expected until 2018. In the meantime, the opening of the first phase will affect existing bus routes to Washington Dulles International Airport and create some new options. Here are three options:

1

The Washington Flyer/The Silver Line Express | The Washington Flyer currently operates between the Orange Line’s West Falls Church station and Dulles. But once the Silver Line opens, the bus will leave instead from the Wiehle-Reston East station and be renamed The Silver Line Express. The route will be shorter and cheaper — $5 for a oneway trip instead of the current $10. It will run every 15 minutes during peak hours and every 20 minutes at other times.

With the opening of Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Silver Line on Saturday, a new swath of apartment buildings have suddenly become Metro-accessible. Real-estate developers, who’ve long known the Silver Line would open at some point, have been eyeing the area for years. As a result, new rentals have cropped up — and in some cases are still being built — at sites that offer renters

“The Silver Line does portend growth for Tysons.” — JON COX , A SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT WITH APARTMENT DEVELOPER AVALON BAY

easy access to the Silver Line. “It’s a natural place to be,” says Jon Cox, a senior vice president for Avalon Bay, a company that opened the Avalon Park Crest in that area last year. Still the appeal wasn’t specifically Metro’s arrival, but what that meant for the general growth of the area around it. “A rising tide lifts all boats, so Tysons is going to be improving over time,” he says. Here’s a roundup of some new and upcoming apartments near the Silver Line. BETH MARLOWE (E XPRES S) CONTINUED ON R3

Special features: In addition to the usual concierge and pool, the Ascent has some less-common amenities, including a petgrooming salon, a bicycle repair station and a pool deck with a firepit, outdoor TVs and grills. Plus, there’s a transit display board in the lobby, so you’ll never miss your Silver Line train. (Or at least, if you do, you can’t say you didn’t know it was coming.)

Special features: Ovation has the typical amenities, plus a little something extra. They don’t just have a weight room — they have a weight room with towel service. They don’t just have a pool — they have a pool and a waterfall. Their game room has pool tables, foosball and six TVs. There’s even an outdoor bocce ball court.

Since the apartments are part of the planned Park Crest development (as is Ovation), there’s lots of shopping right outside the building, including a Harris Teeter grocery store about 100 yards away. Tysons Galleria is a five- to 10-minute walk up the hill.

When did it open? It hasn’t yet. Percent rented: Developers say pre-leasing will begin later this year, and the first tenants will start moving in in early 2015. Types of units: Studios, one bedrooms and two bedrooms, including some large penthouse units. Prices haven’t been set yet. Special features: The 30-story high-rise is being built atop 13,000 square feet of new ground-floor retail in Tysons, which developers hope will soon be a walkable area with an urban vibe. VITA will also have a concierge, a rooftop pool and a “Skylounge” on the top floor.

silver line Does this mean more buses?

Fairfax Connector will run to all five Silver Line stations. The system created 16 new routes, eliminated five routes and made changes to 28 routes.

How will this change my commute? Although people from Leesburg to Tysons Corner, Va., may be thrilled to have Metrorail as an option for traveling to downtown and beyond, the outlook is gloomier for Blue Line riders, particularly those who take Metro from Alexandria and South Arlington. (T WP)

Silver Line Silver Line trains will run every six minutes between Wiehle-Reston East and Largo Town Center during rush hour. During non-rush periods, the trains will run every 12 to 20 minutes.

The Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission (PRTC) s ystem will discontinue service to the West Falls Church and Vienna stations and instead serve the Silver Line’s Tysons Corner station.

Commuters boarding at the three stations west of East Falls Church — West Falls Church, Dunn Loring and Vienna — will see a decrease in the number of trains leaving Vienna each hour during the morning rush from 19 to 11. Those closer to the city won’t be affected by the drop thanks to extra Silver Line trains.

2

ONE, TWO, THREE AND FOUR BEDROOM APARTMENT HOMES

About 37 percent of existing Metrorail riders will benefit from shorter wait times thanks to the Silver Line, according to WMATA.

Metrobus will serve the McLean and Tysons Corner stations.

Loudoun County Transit will serve the Spring Hill and Wiehle-Reston East stations.

Blue Line Blue Line trains will now run every 12 minutes, about four minutes less often than the current average. To help alleviate crowding, Metro will convert two or three six-car trains into eight-car trains during rush hour, which could accommodate about 200 more passengers per train. Metro is also encouraging Blue Line riders to try other ways to get where they need to go. Depending on the destination, people traveling from Alexandria and South Arlington into the District may be better off taking a Yellow Line train and switching at L’Enfant Plaza, rather than waiting for a Blue Line train.

Yellow Line During rush periods, Yellow Line trains will increase by two trains in each direction per hour to help offset the decrease in Blue Line trains.

silver line

Why will there be fewer Blue Line trains now? There are only two ways across the Potomac River for Metro trains. Yellow Line trains go over the Yellow Line bridge; Blue and Orange line trains go through a tunnel below Rosslyn which is currently at capacity at 26 trains an hour. Silver Line service means Metro has to open up slots in that tunnel.

Why is the Silver Line running all the way to L argo Town Center instead of Rosslyn? Trying to turn back trains at Rosslyn would be a mess, given the station’s track configuration. At one point, Metro thought Stadium-Armory would

KATHERINE FREY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Are the New Cars Ready Yet? And Other Questions be the line’s eastern terminus, but then officials decided it would be too difficult to turn back trains there.

Will the Silver Line feature 7000-series cars? Eventually. Travelers sometimes refer to the next generation of rail cars as “the Silver Line cars.” Metro is buying some of these 7000-series cars to accommodate the demand created by the Silver Line extension. That doesn’t mean they will run exclusively on the Silver Line. And none will have entered service in time for the line’s opening.

pain of some Blue Line riders who travel to Rosslyn and the west side of the District. Starting Aug. 24, the 7Y will be rerouted to stop within walking distance of the Blue Line stations at Crystal City, Pentagon City, Pentagon, Arlington Cemetery, Farragut West and McPherson Square.

Have they started to work on Phase II yet? Preliminary work on the second phase, which will have six stops, including one at Dulles International Airport, has begun. Earlier this year, officials launched a hotline (1-844-385-RAIL) for people who have questions or concerns about the second phase.

Will it really be ready in 2018? Metro doesn’t have the best track record, but only time will tell. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The Problem of Parking

$150M

Officials expect demand to outstrip supply near stations

The amount that the $2.9 billion Silver Line is currently over budget, not including bills that have yet to come in. Phase II is estimated to cost $2.7 billion.

Tysons Corner, Va. ASTRID RIECKEN (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

The key cards have been issued. The automatic parking arms installed. Signs have been posted. While Metro officials are busy making final preparations for the Saturday grand opening of its first new rail line in more than two decades, businesses and residents are preparing themselves for the possible onslaught of thousands of commuters in search of free parking. A mong the biggest potential temptations: Tysons Corner Center mall, home to more than 12,000 parking spaces just a short stroll away from the Tysons station. Mall officials are eager to welcome new shoppers. But commuters looking to park? Stay away. “Our first priority is for our shoppers and mall employees,” said Bob Maurer, a mall spokesman. It was a deliberate omission on the part of planners to not include parking garages at four of the five new Silver Line stations (Wiehle

Riders can access a parking garage from the upper deck of the Wiehle-Reston stop.

Avenue, in Reston, has an underground garage with just over 3,000 spaces. A temporary lot near the McLean station also has space for just over 700 cars). The decision was part of the larger push to transform Tysons from a sprawling expanse of corporate office buildings, stripmalls and some of the most grinding rushhour traffic in Northern Virginia, into a less-car dependent, walkable community. Planners hoped the lack of parking would encourage com-

muters to abandon their vehicles and find other ways to get to Metro. But that transformation is still decades away. And even as Fairfax County officials have invested millions of dollars on bus routes, sidewalks and planning for bike lanes, just how many riders will take advantage of them remains unknown. “We have been doing testing, but not in real-time traffic,’’ said Beth Francis, a spokeswoman for the Fairfax County Department of Transportation, about the new bus

The Wiehle-Reston station will open shortly before noon Saturday following an opening ceremony with regional officials and a ribbon cutting (it’s no White House Correspondents’ Dinner, but it will feature a who’s who of local politics). The first train will depart from Wiehle-Reston at noon and pick up passengers on its inaugural ride at approximately 12:08 p.m. at Spring Hill, 12:10 p.m. at Greensboro, 12:12 p.m. at Tysons Corner and 12:14 p.m. at McLean on its way to the city. routes and traffic patterns. Initially, Metro officials expect roughly 50,000 daily riders to travel to and from the new stations. Even the most ardent fans of the Tysons makeover don’t believe there will be enough temporary spaces. Metro’s garage at the Vienna Metro station, which has more than 5,000 spaces, and its garage at West Falls Church, which has about 2,000, routinely fill up before 8 a.m. While Tysons has long been home to more parking spaces than people, few are open to the general public. At Tysons Corner Center, officials are installing a key card system that will restrict access to the mall during non-business hours. The mall will use its extensive network of security cameras and will increase garage patrols. Businesses up the hill from the McLean station said they will increase security, and employees and visitors will have to swipe key cards to use garages and lots. Even i n R e s ton, w it h it s 3,000-plus spaces, residents in two nearby neighborhoods petitioned to have their streets designated permit parking zones.

COSTS

You may be qualified to participate if you: • are at least 18 years of age • have experienced at least six months of nerve pain as a result of surgery or an injury • satisfy all of the eligibility requirements For more information, go to: www.traumaticnervepain.com

Do you still have tingling, burning or shooting pain (nerve pain) after an injury or surgery? A 17-week research study is being conducted to test the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medicine in people with this type of nerve pain, as compared to a placebo (a look-alike pill made up of an inactive substance). All study-related medications and procedures will be provided at no cost. You may also be reimbursed for time and travel.

Life on the Line

One common refrain about the Silver Line: “I don’t work or live out there, so I won’t be using it until it goes to Dulles.” But that’s a pretty limited way to look at the five newest Metro stops. Even if Tysons and Reston are nowhere near your regular 9-to-5 routine, there are plenty of other reasons to make the trip. We’ve developed a few potential itineraries — including a bike adventure, a night out and a shopping excursion — that may entice you to pull out that SmarTrip card. The most popular destination from the Metro will likely be the closest: 2 Reston Town Center (restontowncenter.com), with its 50-plus shops and 30 restaurants, is a quick 1.5-mile ride or hike away. Instead of immediately hopping on the W&OD, try this roundabout route. It uses some of the other nature trails that snake around Reston, a planned community that was developed to emphasize recreation. Go a tad farther north on Wiehle Avenue to North Shore Drive. (There’s a sidewalk if you’re afraid of riding with traffic.) From there, you can connect with 3 The Blue Trail, which meanders through parks,

A Night Out Developers plan for this strip of car dealerships to transform into an arts and entertainment district, potentially anchored by a performance venue that could seat thousands. You won’t see many signs of that yet amid the parking lots of Leesburg Pike, but you can get a glimpse of the future by enjoying an evening of culture and cocktails. The intimate 100-seat venue can be tricky to find; director Eileen Mandell recommends looking for the Dogtopia day care center, and then following the chain-link fence. The reward? Wide, cushioned seats and ambitious productions — last season’s lineup included “Bat Boy: The Musical.” This weekend, 1st Stage hosts “The Actual Dance,” a moving one-man show about the writer’s experience with his wife’s breast cancer. After the curtain call, take the set of stairs leading down into the parking lot and keep going left. There lies 3 Iris Lounge (1524 Spring Hill Road; 703-7609000, irisloungeva.com), the Tysons area’s only nightclub. Patrons — mostly in their 30s and up — swirl around a swanky billiards room, a cigar bar and, of course, a dance floor. On Fridays and Saturdays, women don’t pay the $10 cover until after 11 p.m. Party responsibly, and the 10-minute walk back to the Metro is totally doable, even in heels.

Why does increased brain power give Scarlett Johansson’s “Lucy” the ability to see strange lines in the air? We’re not sure, but Morgan Freeman says it’s possible.

Michael Pitt and Astrid Berges-Frisbey have a staring contest in “I Origins.”

‘I Origins’ Where Mike Cahill’s previous film, “Another Earth,” could be read as a giant metaphor for second chances, “I Origins” is a more straightforward thriller, the sort that can’t really be digested without swallowing its suppositions whole. Michael Pitt and Brit Marling play Ian and Karen, eye researchers who accidentally discover, via a global database of eye scans, that there’s a child in India whose eyes exactly match those of a former girlfriend of Ian’s, a free spirit named Sofi (Astrid Berges-Frisbey). The film ends with an ambiguous, yet powerful conclusion. It doesn’t answer the question it raises, yet the way it’s asked keeps it echoing in your head. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

‘Le Chef’ (PG-13, 84 MINUTES)

This predictable French comedy is amiable but far from piquant. Alexandre (Jean Reno), head chef at a Paris restaurant, fights with critics who want fancy molecular gastronomy with ordinary foodstuffs tricked into bizarre forms. Jacky (Michael Youn), on the other hand, has only ever worked at diner-style eateries and can’t help turning out haute cuisine. Inevitably, Alexandre discovers that Jacky has prepared a fine version of one of the three-star chef’s recipes. So Alexandre offers Jacky an unpaid tryout at his restaurant. Alexandre’s style of cooking, lightly refreshed, is sure to triumph in the end. But while the movie spends most of its time in the kitchen, its moral is that chefs should budget more hours for home. A Brain Twister ‘Lucy’ may violate basic rules of science, but it sure looks impressive doing it Film Review The theme of “Lucy” may be the potential of the human mind, but the less time any human spends thinking about its largely nonsensical plot, the better. The slickly executed bullet-riddler can be enjoyed by cutting off all attempts at logic. Director Luc Besson — the French filmmaker who placed female stars at the center of such action movies as “La Femme Nikita,” “The Professional” and “The Fifth Element” — recruits Scarlett Johansson to serve as his one-wom-

an army here. She plays Lucy, an American in Taiwan who wakes up to find a drug cartel has surgically embedded her with bags of the chemical CPH4, destined for transport to multiple European countries. But before Lucy arrives at her destination, the substance begins to leak into her bloodstream, activating a rapidly increasing percentage of her brain. This transforms

her into an increasingly unstoppable superwoman, for reasons that defy the basic principles of science and sci-fi. “Lucy” is premised on the “fact” that normal people use only 10 percent of their brain, a bill of goods Besson tries to sell by relying on the most authoritative cinematic tool currently known to Hollywood: Morgan Freeman. As Professor Norman, Freeman exists to explain what men and women could achieve if only they could light up every corner of the cerebellum. Besson cuts between scenes of Freeman discussing that hypothetical and Johansson acting on it, as her mind overloads with memories and information that somehow also turn her into an assassin capable of engaging

in hyper-violent versions of Jedi mind tricks. As Lucy, Johansson hopscotches between vulnerability and a robotic commitment to execute whatever her sophisticated, internal data processor tells her to do. Her performance is just grounded enough to keep Besson’s occasionally inventive, sometimes silly flourishes from turning the movie into self-parody. Besson clearly understands that the film’s central myth endures because people are intrigued by the prospect of activating our whole heads. He runs with that idea full-tilt and at top speed, even if it means turning Lucy into a walking X-ray machine/broadcast network/telekinetic demigod. It’s possible to be swept away by the fun in all that, but only if you’re capable of silencing the messages bubbling through your own gray matter and ignoring the inevitable questions. JEN CHANEY (THE WASHINGTON POST )

The proportion of people who claimed their most recent decision to go to the theater to see a movie was influenced by tweets, according to a new Nielsen survey. Additionally, after seeing a tweet about a movie, 41 percent of users say they tweet about it and 44 percent say they watch the trailer. (E XPRESS)

Allen Works His ‘Magic’ The director covers well-trod territory in his new comedy, with charming results

‘Magic in the Moonlight’ (PG-13) Director: Woody Allen Stars: Colin Firth, Emma Stone, Eileen Atkins and Marcia Gay Harden In a Nutshell: An English magician struggles to expose a woman claiming to be a spiritual medium.

No amount of magic can change the fact that Emma Stone, left, and Colin Firth don’t really make sense together.

Emma Stone and Colin Firth bring an amusing vitality to a movie, especially when they’re engaged in quick-witted sparring. So watching them try to outmaneuver each other in “Magic in the Moonlight” — Woody Allen’s latest romantic comedy — is delightful. Firth once again plays a charming twerp as Stanley, an abrasive Brit who most people know as Wei Ling Soo. The magician can make an elephant disappear and obscure his true identity under a kimono and a faux Fu Manchu mustache. Offensive? Yes, but keep in mind that the year is 1928. Stanley is visited by an old friend, Howard (Simon McBurney), who tells him about a woman claiming to be a spiritual medium who is swindling a wealthy friend. How-

is that Sophie is so darn adorable, with her winning smile and upbeat attitude, that no one wants to doubt her. Stanley can’t hide his surprise at how much Sophie knows about him. Could she be the real thing? If “Magic in the Moonlight” were made by any other director, it would be heralded as a first-rate romantic

What a Tangled Web He Weaved Film Review Gunther Bachmann may pull a lot of strings as the head of a Hamburg-based anti-terrorism unit, but to call this schlubby, chainsmoking, hard-drinking German intelligence operative a spymaster just seems wrong. As beautifully played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, in one of his last and most powerful performances, the antihero of

“A Most Wanted Man” is simply too much at the mercy of others to be a master of anything. As the film opens, Gunther is tracking an undocumented immigrant named Issa (Grigoriy Dobrygin) — half Chechen, half Russian — who has just surfaced seeking asylum from Russia, where he was being imprisoned and tortured. Although the German authorities and one CIA officer (Robin Wright) suspect that Issa is up to no good, Gunther isn’t so sure. In any event, he hopes to use Issa to catch a much larger fish: an unnamed businessman suspect-

ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS

‘A Most Wanted Man’ is Hoffman at his best and most subtle

comedy. But anyone who has seen a couple Woody Allen films will recognize aspects of his other movies, from the depressive protagonist to the European vacation setting and the existentialism. The most blatant of the revisited motifs is the May-December romance. There’s a nearly 30-year age difference between Firth and Stone, and while both characters are alluring in their own ways, the discrepancy can prove distracting. Let’s just say that Firth seems like a guy who looks good for his age — until he’s next to a woman so impeccably youthful, she’s the face of Revlon. It’s not without f laws, but “Magic in the Moonlight” offers a pleasant vacation from reality. And what more could you want from a summer movie?

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY

Why, Rob, Why?! No director has the magic touch forever. Steven Spielberg gave us “The Color Purple” and “Schindler’s List,” but he’s also responsible for “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” Francis Ford Coppola solidified his place on the Mount Olympus of Film History with “The Godfather” and its “Part II” but came very close to tumbling off with “Part III.” Just because someone can conjure magic once or twice or 10 times doesn’t mean the charm will always work. Which I guess explains Rob Reiner and his latest film, “And So It Goes,” out Friday. Here is what I liked about the film: It is short. Here is what I didn’t like: the script, the performances, the editing or the direction. And while I got to talk to Reiner, starting any interview with “What the hell, man?! You made ‘Stand By Me’! What is this crap?!” doesn’t set you up for any sort of meaningful conversation, which is, I think, the point of an interview. We all make bad choices, of course. Today I chose to have enough caffeine that I am currently able to see music. But no one is paying me to give myself heart palpitations; neither have I made a career of inflicting involuntary bodily twitching onto others. Reiner got paid to direct “And So It Goes,” and (hopefully very few) people

will pay money to see it. Like, real money! That could be spent on useful things! Like another Diet Coke! I just don’t understand why anyone thought making this movie was a good idea! What did Rob Reiner read in the script that made him think “comedy gold” — the fact that the leading man is a racist douchenozzle or the part where a pregnant lady suddenly goes into labor and says crazy things because ladies in labor are crazy? (I did 19 hours with a failed epidural. I assure you IT WASN’T FUNNY.) And what the hell, Diane Keaton?! I know it’s tough for older women to get parts, but sometimes a gal just has to sit back and count her “Annie Hall” money! How many more exclamation points will it take to convey how baffled I am that someone, at some stage, didn’t stop this scourge?! It’s not Reiner’s first bad film, but his good films are so good that I’m still shocked when he cranks out a stinker. This is the guy who directed “This Is Spinal Tap,” “Misery” AND “The Princess Bride,” for heaven’s sake. He knows movies. Why, when it came to “And So It Goes,” didn’t he know better? — JESSICA SIDMAN AT WASHINGTONCITYPAPER .COM/BLOGS/YOUNGANDHUNGRY outlines ways

to approach taking photos of your food while eating out that won’t drive restaurant workers or fellow diners crazy. Other pro tips: Eat early (less crowded, better natural light), and don’t post photos during the meal.

“15 years ago this would’ve been on my birthday gift list.” — COMMENTER SELFPROFESSEDGEEK AT THEVERGE.COM waxes nostalgic, wondering

how the Bunch O’ Balloons could have changed water balloon fights of his childhood. While the device is still in the Kickstarter stage, its creators tout their invention’s ability to fill up 37 balloons at once and up to 100 per minute. The single balloon stems attach to a giant stem that attaches to most garden hose nozzles. When the balloons are full, shaking the hose will detach perfectly tied balloons.

“So, um, yeah. Can’t decide if the trailer is hot or if it’s Beyonce’s vocals.” — @MATTHEW_HUBBARD is unsure if it was the

images or the soundtrack that resonated more in the trailer released Thursday for the upcoming film adaptation “Fifty Shades of Grey,” due in theaters Feb. 14. The spot gave a first look at the chemistry between stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson but also featured a snippet from a new version of Beyonce’s hit “Crazy in Love,” which was released online the same day.

— ALEXANDRA PETRI AT WASHINGTONPOST.COM/ BLOGS/COMPOST makes her case for why

George Washington came in at No. 6 on her ranking of American presidents by sex appeal. That’s just before James Monroe but after James K. Polk. President Barack Obama came in second only to John F. Kennedy. Warren G. Harding came in last.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You aren’t one for learning things in a strict, pedantic way. You want to experience something firsthand and learn from that. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Putting your best foot forward will involve more than merely following the rules; you must make a few rules, as well. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You’ll be put in charge of a project that has been fraught with difficulties and complexities in the recent past. You can clear things up. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) It is thought by some that your way may be the best way for all, but you are not likely to demand that everyone follow your lead. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You may not respond well today to one who is unable to appear genuine when things get difficult. A solution may be hard to come by.

Thursday’s Solution

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You are likely to receive several important messages that are difficult to decipher. When you do, you’ll want to make some changes.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You are interested in that which cannot readily be explained. You’ll want to explore a past event that cannot be figured out. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) It’s a good day for you to pull out all the stops. If others see you going for broke in this way, they may well follow suit.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You may feel as though you have little to share with those around you, but they are more than willing to listen to anything you say! GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You may find yourself unable to answer a challenge in kind, but you must respond in some way before the day is out. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You may be giving someone else a little too much personal freedom at this time. He or she may benefit from a somewhat stricter approach.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

She Wears the Logic In the Relationship The National Enquirer reported that Angelina Jolie made Brad Pitt stop using his psychic of 10 years, Ron Bard. “Ron advised Brad to get divorced from Jennifer Aniston,” a source said. “Brad really listens to Ron.” “[Jolie] likes to have some control over Brad’s purse strings, and she doesn’t want a psychic giving ‘financial advice’ to him,” the source added. Lawyers say they are trying to resolve Shia LaBeouf’s disorderly conduct case stemming from an incident at a Broadway show last month. Prosecutors and LaBeouf’s lawyer told a judge Thursday that they’re exploring an agreement to resolve the case. LaBeouf was arrested after he allegedly disrupted a performance of “Cabaret” starring Alan Cumming. (AP)

‘Miley, It’s Rob. I Feel So Vulnerable Right Now. Can I Come Over?’ Robin Thicke has reportedly given up on saving his marriage to Paula Patton, according to TMZ. Evidence includes: Thicke put their Los Angeles home on the market, and an attorney is working on a financial settlement. Sources told TMZ that neither party has hired a divorce lawyer yet, but that Thicke is tired of begging for forgiveness and is ready to move on. (E XPRESS)

‘May the Record Show That Mr. Baldwin Is Always Right’ Short-fused actor Alec Baldwin is not apologizing over an incident that led to a disorderly conduct arrest in May. Baldwin told a Manhattan judge Thursday he’d rather pay a fine than apologize over the incident that started when police stopped him for riding a bicycle the wrong way down a oneway street. (AP)
