Kids Crossing Border Will Be Sent Back Washington The White House said Monday that most unaccompanied children arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border are unlikely to qualify for humanitarian relief that would prevent them from being sent back to their home countries. The pointed warning came as the White House ďŹ nalized a spending request to Congress detailing the additional resources President Barack Obama wants in order to
hire more immigration judges and open additional detention facilities to deal with the border crisis. White House ofďŹ cials said they planned to send the more than $2 billion request to lawmakers today. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said that while the administration will allow the immigration review process to take place, ofďŹ cials so far don’t expect many of the children arriving at the border to be able to stay in the U.S. “It’s unlikely that most of these kids will qualify for humanitarian relief,â€? Earnest said. “It means they will not have a legal basis for remaining in this country and will be returned.â€?

The state’s Liquor Control Board was overwhelmed with nearly 7,000 potlicense applications. Reviewing them has been slow. Only 79 growers have been licensed. About 560,000 square feet is in production, but only some has been harvested. “Will there be shortages?” asks Randy Simmons, the board’s legal-pot project manager. “The answer to that is yes.”
The board recently announced that people who want to make pot-infused sodas, brownies or other treats must get approval for their products, and so far no one has. The board doesn’t want any gummy candies or anything that would appeal to children. The edible-makers also need to have their kitchens pass a state inspection, and only two have been tested so far.
The state Health Department recently spent $400,000 for a new radio and online advertisement campaign urging parents to talk to their kids about marijuana. Dr. Leslie Walker, of Seattle Children’s Hospital, wishes the state had started soon after the measure passed. Instead, she says, many young people have gotten the impression marijuana is legal and without risk.

After Arrests, a Treatment Offer In Northern Virginia, cops try new tactic to combat drug abuse

For three days last month, officers from Virginia’s Prince William County, Manassas City and Manassas Park arrested 53 people as part of their ongoing battle against heroin and illegal prescription drug dealing. Nothing too unusual there. But after each arrest, a detective or officer sat down with the suspect and made this offer: We have a chaplain available right now to take you to a drug treatment center, where counselors are ready and waiting — right now — to get you into treatment. For a cop to make that offer, and to have already arranged the path from jail to treatment, is groundbreaking, police experts said. There were six takers, according to Vickie Taylor, a division manager for the Prince William County

Four showed up on the day of their arrest, and two more called and set up appointments after they were able to post bond, not always an easy task for those charged with selling heroin or oxycontin. Even more remarkable, Taylor said, is that everyone who first made contact with her counselors has since showed up for their subsequent appointments or treatment. “These are obviously people who are struggling with major addiction problems,” Taylor said. “They were amazed and really grateful for the opportunity.”
The concept of police directly offering treatment is just emerging in law enforcement as police departments look for new ways to approach the drug problem. In Seattle and Santa Fe, N.M., police take drug users and low-level drug dealers to treatment before their arrests. But treating the suspects at the same time they’re facing prosecution is a slightly different approach, and “cutting edge,” said Chuck Wexler, executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum. “It is a sign of the country’s shift in how it sees drug addicts.” While embracing the opportunity for treatment doesn’t get the defendants a special deal with prosecutors, defense attorneys may later seek to show that their client is sincere about overcoming addiction. Stolen Relics Are Finally at Rest More than 20 years have passed since the day Joe Felt saw something glinting in the woods near his home in Haymarket, Va.: a 5-foottall silvery cross. A police search of the area yielded more than a dozen gravestones and old markers, as well as a bag full of human bones. Felt saw the news stories that followed: Members of a satanic cult had stolen the items from Congressional Cemetery, and then, worried that the police were closing in on them, threw them out of a truck. Glutton for ‘Gluten-Free’
Avoiding grains is a must for those with celiac disease, but most gluten-free dieters don’t have it Washington The swelling ranks of Americans adopting gluten-free diets have given rise to another hot trend: people calling the whole thing a bunch of baloney. And then requesting that the baloney be sandwiched between two pieces of white bread. Served with a cookie for dessert. David Klimas has a friend who recently went gluten-free, a development that the 46-year-old real estate sales manager greets with a slow eye roll. He thinks that the gluten-free thing is just a fad, promoted by food companies “as a way of making money.” “In the ’50s, everyone had ulcers,” he says. “Then, it was back problems. Now, it’s gluten.” Gluten abstinence has grown dramatically over the past several years. According to a survey by the NPD Group, a market-research firm, nearly a third of adults say that they’re trying to either eliminate or cut back on gluten, a combination of proteins found in wheat and other grains. And this movement has spawned a burgeoning food industry valued at at least $4 billion and perhaps more than $10 billion — and climbing. Entire aisles at grocery stores are dedicated to the diet. Restaurant chains including Bob Evans, Hooters and Uno Pizzeria and Grill offer gluten-free menus. Trade shows devoted to gluten-free products have popped up. Bars use menu icons to denote gluten-free beers. All of which makes some people want to bang their heads against a flour mill. “I don’t get it,” Klimas says of his friend’s decision to cut gluten from his diet. “How can you all of a sudden be gluten-free? He’s 45. We’ve been friends for 19 years. Sometimes, I think it’s just for him to be cool in front of the waiters.”

The only treatment is to give up gluten. There has been a concerted effort to raise awareness of celiac disease, so that those living with it can see an end to their suffering. But some people believe that the push has caused new gluten-free converts to believe that they have
‘Gluten-Free’ and On the Defense Shira Kraft, author of Glutie Foodie, a blog that tracks her culinary adventures, was diagnosed with celiac disease almost four years ago. She says that the gluten-free movement has been a doubleedged sword for people who have the disease. On one hand, it’s great to have more — and tastier — products to choose from. But she also says that because so many people are staying gluten-free, her condition is sometimes taken less seriously. “I certainly feel I have to defend myself,” says Kraft, 31. “I’m embarrassed when I say that I’m allergic to gluten, because I feel like people are rolling their eyes. ‘Just another one, part of the fad.’ ” (T WP)

Daniel Leff ler, director of research at the Celiac Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, said that between 2 million and 3 million Americans report maintaining a gluten-free diet, and about 10 percent of that group has celiac disease. The number of people with the disease is rising — doubling every 30 years, on pace with other autoimmune diseases such as Type 1 diabetes — but the increase is far outstripped by the growth in people adopting the diet for other reasons, including weight loss. Some nutritionists warn that dieters might be unnecessarily depriving themselves of healthy fiber found in whole grains — and not compensating with fruits, vegetables and other sources of fiber. Jessie Dankos, a 24-year-old grant-management consultant who lives in Arlington, felt bad for a woman she recently met who has such a severe reaction to gluten that she has to check the labels on her shampoo to make sure that it doesn’t contain traces of the substance. But Dankos has less empathy for her self-diagnosed roommate, who will sometimes gaze longingly at baked goods and expect sympathy for her inability to indulge in them. “But then sometimes she’ll come home from the bars and have a slice of pizza,” Dankos says. Jonathan Lucroy, Brewers: Milwaukee signed its 28-year-old backstop to a five-year, $10.28-million deal following his first full season in the majors. Now, given that Lucroy has 30 doubles in 2014 and leads all catchers with a .329 average and .913 OPS, it looks like a steal for the Brewers.

The Reds’ Aroldis Chapman: He spent the start of the season on the disabled list, but he’s made up for lost time. He has struck out 47 hitters in 24⅔ innings, and he throws the hardest fastball in the majors. He has allowed almost twice as many runs as Soriano and blown the same number of save opportunities in two fewer chances. But it’s easy to see why NL players would want him on their side. The Brewers’ Francisco Rodriguez: He’s a much more dicey choice, the benefactor of opportunity and reputation. Soriano has a better ERA (1.03 to 2.34), WHIP (0.829 to 0.874) and save percentage (91.3 to 90). K-Rod has more chances and the better nickname. The Braves’ Craig Kimbrel: The selection of Kimbrel lies in the middle between Chapman and Rodriguez — a pitcher who benefits from reputation but whom any player would pick when choosing up sides. Kimbrel has blown four saves and owns a 2.04 ERA. Aside from 27 saves, Soriano bests him in every category. But, again, who would blame a player wanting Kimbrel representing his team? Set-up men: Manager Mike Matheny took Tony Watson of the Pirates and Pat Neshek of the Cardinals. It’s hard to quibble with either choice. Watson has a 0.89 ERA and has allowed just two of eight inherited runners to score. Neshek has been even better, with a 0.77 ERA and a ridiculous 0.571 WHIP. Matheny took his guy, but in this case, it was totally justified.
The stat lines Rendon: .282/.340/.483, 12 HR, 50 RBI, 60 R, 8 SB, 2.9 WAR Carpenter: .282/.375/.388, 4 HR, 32 RBI, 55 R, 3 SB, 2.8 WAR Harrison: .298/.335/.453, 5 HR, 25 RBI, 33 R, 9 SB, 2.0 WAR The Cardinals’ Matt Carpenter: He makes fewer outs than Rendon by a wide margin, but Rendon makes up the difference — and more — with superior power and base running. Rendon has had the better season, but it is close. And when it’s close, and the manager has his say, he is always going to choose his own player. Adjust your outrage level by personal preference. The Pirates’ Josh Harrison: Matheny made another curious choice in Harrison, a wonderful, versatile defensive player hitting .298. Rendon has taken about 120 more plate appearances than Carpenter Harrison, and he is reaching base and slugging at a better clip. Harrison should win points for his versatility, but probably not enough to make up the difference in their offensive output. Utility player: Harrison is a utility player, a very good one, and Matheny seemingly wanted to give that style of player his due. Perhaps the All-Star Game, a stage for the best players as opposed to the highly useful, is not the right time. *STATS ENTERING MONDAY’S GAMES
Paul Goldschmidt, Diamondbacks: Goldschmidt is making $1.1 million in the second season of his five-year, $32-million deal, signed following his rookie year. For this, Arizona gets a league-leading 32 doubles, a .310 average and a .952 OPS that is tops among NL first basemen. Jose Altuve, Astros: Altuve signed a four-year, $12.5-million deal last July with Houston. Now, the 24-year-old leads the AL with a .337 average and 38 stolen bases in a season in which he’s making $1.25 million. Nelson Cruz, Orioles: Cruz received his one-year, $8-million deal from Baltimore only because he was damaged by his 50-game suspension following the Biogenesis fiasco last year. Raw, But Realistic As soon as Gena Hamshaw began experimenting with a raw food diet, she saw the benefits. The D.C.based clinical nutritionist credits the regimen with solving her digestion woes, boosting her energy level, expanding her taste horizons and even changing her life. But she still craved roasted veggies tossed in olive oil and sea salt. So she ate them. She also went back to making brown rice drizzled with tahini dressing, tofu scramble and baked sweet potatoes. Hamshaw’s continued fondness for cooking — with actual heat — may make her seem like an odd spokeswoman for the raw foods movement. Her accessible approach, however, keeps attracting readers to her 5-year-old blog, Choosing Raw. And it’s why she hopes her new book with the same title ($20, Da Capo Press) will persuade more folks to sample some of her favorite foods, including homemade hemp milk, chia pudding and zucchini “pasta.” Even if you don’t know her name, it’s possible you’ve tried one of Hamshaw’s concoctions already. Fans of her blog include the local folks who run Sweetgreen and Jrink, both of which tapped her to help develop their juice menus. “I’m a middle-of-the-road, sane voice,” says Hamshaw, 32, who recognizes that many raw foodists and
enthusiasts come off as “woo-woo.” They often advocate for potentially dangerous cleanses and offer strategies that aren’t practical, she adds. (Their blogs are all about “living in yurts, or having lots of money,” she jokes.) What motivated her to start chronicling her dietary journey was the fact that she was young, busy and making only $28,000 a year, which forced her to be realistic about raw food. Complicated recipes that required three days of sprouting and dehydrating hard-to-find ingredients were off the table. Instead, she developed techniques that helped her understand how to whip something up with whatever produce was in her fridge: hearty salads, blended soups, raw “rice” made from finely chopped veggies. The 125 dishes suggested in the book are meant to be played with, Hamshaw says. Some are raw, some are cooked and some are a combination, but all are 100 percent vegan. According to Hamshaw, that’s the healthiest possible diet — as long as you don’t fall for several myths that circulate widely in the vegan community. One whopper: Vegans don’t need to worry about calcium intake because their lowacid diets protect their bones. “I heard that and bought it hook, line and sinker,” says Hamshaw, who just needed to do a little digging around to find out that wasn’t

true. “There’s no bulletproof vest quality to a vegan diet.” Vegans, like everybody else, need to eat balanced meals. And it does the movement no good, Hamshaw says, to promote inaccurate information. Hamshaw’s policy is to put it all out there, including the personal history behind her food philosophy. She’s particularly candid about
her struggle with anorexia, which first emerged in her early teen years. “My pediatrician said something and I took it too far,” says Hamshaw, who had multiple relapses over the next decade. But going vegan and exploring raw cuisine changed her relationship with food for good. Ethical eating felt better, and she stopped viewing what was on her plate as simply a number of calories. It’s a common experience, Hamshaw now knows after hearing from dozens of readers on the topic. She publishes their “green recovery” stories every month. Veganism may not cure every eating disorder — for some people, putting any food in the “forbidden category” is risky, she notes. But she’s proud to host a forum where it’s acknowledged as an option. Presenting multiple choices is key to everything Hamshaw does. You can substitute pine nuts for chick peas, or use an oven or a dehydrator to make your ratatouille, she says. should be looked at apart from the realm of time-outs. Might he be depressed? Is substance abuse a possibility? Or bullying? Try to start a conversation with him, and, as crazy as it sounds, collaborate on some boundaries together — not using taking away his music as the stick, but using building it up as the carrot.
If someone keeps inviting themselves to things you don’t want them to attend, and they haven’t been breaking into your iPhone calendar, it’s a sign you’re being too loose-lipped with your plans. When you’re always telling her what you’re up to, it’s reasonable for her to imagine that you wouldn’t hate her company. Your job is to help her find her own friends, so that you neither abandon her nor have to become bosom buddies. Chances are, she’s got some interests that don’t overlap with yours, so encourage her to cultivate them — suggest volunteer work, listservs, a new yoga studio — and share some of those circle-developing tips.

‘Black Orpheus’ Musical To Debut on Broadway A musical based on the 1959 Marcel Camus film “Black Orpheus” is in the works on Broadway. Pulitzer Prize-winner Lynn Nottage will write the story and Tony Award-winner George C. Wolfe will direct. The musical will have its world premiere on Broadway, but no timetable was set. “Black Orpheus” recreates the Orpheus and Eurydice myth in the Rio de Janeiro Carnival. When she won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for “Nurse Jackie” in 2010, Edie Falco claimed “I’m not funny!” She had a point: Why was Showtime’s grim show about a pill-popping nurse submitted as a comedy anyway? The moment crystallized a very polarizing topic pertaining to the Emmy Awards (8 p.m. Aug. 25, NBC): the fierce strategy behind choosing which category a show is nominated in. Clearly, producers and networks want to enter their shows in races that will result in wins — for a dramedy like “Nurse Jackie,” the comedy category is typically a less-competitive race. Sometimes shows want to land a more prestigious nomination — such as a nod in the notoriously cutthroat drama series category (“Breaking Bad,” “Game of Thrones,” etc.), as opposed to winding up on the lessglamorous, all-encompassing miniseries and made-for-TV list. When the 2014 Emmy nominations are announced Thursday it will cap off a year of especially intense political maneuvering among categories. The reason? In the age of multiple television platforms (broadcast, cable, premium cable, Internet streaming sites) it’s more difficult than ever to truly define a series and where it fits. While the world of TV might have changed, these questions have been circulating for decades. When asked how often debates about Emmy categories come up,
‘Orange is the New Black’ as a comedy
John Leverence, the television academy’s awards senior vice president, had two words: “Every. Year.” And it almost always comes down to the blurry lines between what’s really a comedy and a drama. Is there any chance we could ever get a dramedy category? There has been talk of this, Leverence confirmed, though it

‘True Detective’ as a drama; ‘Fargo’ as a miniseries At first glance, this is the strangest decision, as “True Detective” executives have said the show will have a new cast and storyline each season. Isn’t that obviously a miniseries? But HBO — with a long history of doing well with dramas — is going for the bigger prize. Never mind that shows like FX’s “Fargo” (with 10 episodes as opposed to “True Detective’s” eight) are in the miniseries category. It’s allowed according to Emmy rules, but mostly, the shows have leeway simply because it’s increasingly difficult to identify a program’s nature in the first season.
‘American Horror Story’ as a miniseries This took a lot of people by surprise in 2012 when the show didn’t submit as a drama, and it struck many as a ploy for awards — after all, the miniseries category is far less competitive. It worked: “AHS” racks up the trophies year after year. Leverence notes the show is not breaking any rules: It fits the bill as a “hybrid” miniseries/drama, meaning that each season has its own story. really, there’s no point in trying to game the system, because the industry-savvy voters know what’s fair. “There’s no such thing as having ‘an easier time’ in the competition,” he said. “You can only run the best race you can if you’re properly categorized … Otherwise, you’re not doing yourselves any good.” EMILY YAHR (THE WASHINGTON POST )
