A retro touch for famed site THE DISTRICT The newly reopened Watergate Hotel might have mined the scandalous legacy of the complex where it’s located for its theme, but the black-tie crowd gathered there Tuesday night for its inaugural party looked unimpeachably upstanding. Former senator Bob Dole, R-Kan., who lives in one of the complex’s condos, was wheeled around the ballroom, where he was greeted by well-wishers and gamely posed for selfies. His wife, Elizabeth, a former senator from North Carolina, mingled with the crowd, which included fellow residents and boldface names from the city’s media, business and real estate worlds. Tandy Dickerson might have once known scandal — the socialite’s Nixon-era love life made headlines — but that’s long past, and now the glamorous “mayor of the Watergate” was perched on a sculptural chair that matched her red dress, observing the guests trickling in. Dickerson has lived in the complex since

“There are 1800s mansions all over town — the Watergate should be modern!” TANDY DICKERSON, “the mayor of the Watergate,” at a party for the grand reopening of the Watergate Hotel. au courant touches: champagne flutes topped with clouds of cotton candy, and billows of smoke from liquid nitrogen spilling from a mixologist’s table. But highlighting the hotel’s connection to the infamous burglary more than four decades ago that brought down a president is the center of the marketing schtick, and the party’s trappings underscored that theme. Guests at the grand opening checked in at office desks that looked like they’d been filched from the set of “Mad Men,” and attendants — garbed in throwback A-line dresses actually designed by the AMC series’s costume designer — located guests’ names on Rolodexes (remember those?). Faux newspapers blared the headline: “Nixon Resigns.” As the hotel’s owners, Jacques and Rakel Cohen, led the crowd in a toast to the hotel’s future, Giuseppe Cecchi — the developer who built the original Watergate complex — looked on from the back of the ballroom. Asked whether he likes the changes he’s seen, he offered a businessman’s pragmatism. “So far, so good, but I’m not supposed to like it, the public is supposed to like it,” he said. “Hopefully, they will.” EMILY HEIL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Incumbents lose big in District primary

Former mayor Gray tops onetime protege for seat on city council J. LAWLER DUGGAN (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT District voters ousted three D.C. Council members — including 12year veteran Vincent B. Orange — and welcomed back former mayor Vincent C. Gray in Democratic primaries marked by concerns about violent crime and gentrification in the nation’s capital. Gray trounced Yvette Alexander, his onetime protege, in the primary for the Ward 7 council seat. It was a redemptive return for Gray, who lost his mayoral re-election bid two years ago amid a federal investigation into his campaign finances that resulted in guilty pleas for six of his associates but no charges against Gray. In the only citywide contest, Orange lost the primary for his at-large seat to Robert White, a former aide to Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton and a newcomer to public office. “All I can say is that I’m proud of my record and believe I have left the city in a better place, especially working families,” Orange said. “Now it is time for the city to pull together under new leadership.” White said that while many might be surprised by his upset win, he knew that voters wanted

change. “There is a mandate, absolutely,” he said. The other casualty Tuesday was LaRuby May, who conceded to Trayon White, losing the primary for the Ward 8 council seat that was occupied by Marion Barry until his death in 2014. The upheaval on the council dealt a major blow to D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, who had considered Alexander, Orange and May allies to help her push through her legislative agenda. In the heavily Democratic city, winning the party primary almost assures election in November. Twenty-four percent of eligible voters cast ballots Tuesday. The only Bowser ally to survive was her hand-picked successor from her home ward,

Brandon T. Todd, Ward 4, who fended off three primary challengers. Gray arrived at his election night celebration at a Deanwood church to a standing ovation. He raised a fist as he stood onstage to address volunteers and promised that construction cranes would soon go up and violent crime would come down in Ward 7. “I’m not going to take a lot of time to celebrate,” Gray told the gathering, his voice breaking. “I’m ready to move on to the next steps.” Council members Mary M. Cheh, D-Ward 3, and David Grosso, I-At Large, and Chairman Phil Mendelson came to congratulate Gray. AARON C. DAVIS AND FENIT NIRAPPIL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

local THE DISTRICT A D.C. Superior Court judge has ordered Donald Trump to be in Washington today — barely a month before the Republican National Convention — to be deposed in his legal dispute with a top chef over a planned restaurant in his Old Post Office hotel. Trump is to be deposed in the offices of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, the firm representing chef Geoffrey Zakarian. Trump sued Zakarian after the chef terminated plans to open a restaurant in Trump’s new D.C. hotel — the $200 million makeover

of the Old Post Office Pavilion on Pennsylvania Avenue — after Trump, while on the campaign, railed against Mexican immigrants as drug dealers and rapists. The GOP front-runner filed suit against Zakarian for breach of contract, seeking $10 million in damages. Separately, Trump also filed suit against famed chef Jose Andres, who also terminated his restaurant plans following Trump’s statements. In court documents, Zakarian argued through his attorneys that Trump’s comments would make opening a successful

Tide shifting on gun laws? In the wake of Orlando, Trump, GOP lawmakers eye some restrictions WASHINGTONPOST.COM TO YOUR HEALTH

WHO: Coffee is healthy, unless it’s scalding hot JOE RAEDLE (GETTY IMAGES)

POLITICS Presumed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and some vulnerable GOP lawmakers signaled Wednesday that they are open to changing the nation’s gun laws, raising the possibility that the political tide might be shifting on an issue that has sharply divided Americans for years. Mass shootings similar to the Orlando massacre that killed 49 people this week have quickly sparked a national outcry for congressional action in the past, usually followed by an intense pressure campaign by gun-rights supporters urging lawmakers to focus elsewhere. But the debate launched this week could be different, thanks mostly to Trump. The presidential candidate’s renewed focus on gun laws goes against GOP orthodoxy, which generally considers Second Amendment issues to be settled. The developments also complicate the Republican response to the Orlando shootings, which had focused mostly on national security and concerns about home-grown terrorism. On Wednesday, Trump said he would schedule a meeting soon with the National Rifle Association to discuss proposals to ban people on certain federal watch lists from buying firearms. Trump was renewing a position he first expressed last year after a mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif. — but taking it to a new level by calling for a meeting with the NRA. Trump’s announcement, made via Twitter, came as Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, who is locked in a closely watched reelection battle, told Ohio reporters that he is ready to back a federal ban on weapons sales to anyone on a

terrorist watch list if a compromise can be reached. Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., who has worked on bipartisan gun-control legislation in the past and is also facing a tough reelection, said he is working with senators in both parties and a gun-control group led by former New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg to come up with such a measure. The NRA responded to Trump by expressing general support for such proposals: “Our position is no guns for terrorists — period. Due process & right to self-defense for law-abiding Americans,” the group tweeted. After the San Bernardino shooting, Trump told CBS’s “Face the Nation” that he is “very strongly into the whole thing with the Second Amendment. But if you can’t fly … I would certainly look at that very hard.” He added: “We have to be looking at a lot of different things. But we can’t do anything to hurt the Second Amendment. People need their weapons to protect themselves. And you see that now more than ever before.” Trump’s position was buoyed this week by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.,

who said that he is “open” to keeping guns out of the hands of terrorists, but not through existing proposals authored by Democrats. But ardent gun rights activists warned that Trump could be jeopardizing conservative support by pushing change. “This is the first true character test for Donald Trump, undoubtedly. As of right now, it sure looks like he’s failed it miserably,” said Dudley Brown, president of the National Association for Gun Rights, an NRA rival. Meanwhile, Democrats on both sides of Congress were launching

a full-court press aimed at forcing Republicans to act. On the Senate floor, Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., launched a filibuster Wednesday with other Democrats amid debate on a Justice Department spending bill that they want to amend with gun-control proposals. “I am prepared to stand on the Senate floor and talk about the need to prevent gun violence for as long as I can,” Murphy tweeted at the start of the filibuster. House Democrats said Wednesday that they would push to expand background checks on gun purchases and renew the lapsed assault-weapons ban, but would focus first on stopping terrorism suspects from buying firearms. Other lawmakers also took steps Wednesday to revive debate. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., proposed requiring the FBI to be alerted if a terrorism suspect buys a gun. Other Democratic senators introduced a plan to funnel $190 million to counterterrorism efforts and active-shooter training at the FBI. The bill would also create 36 new positions to track terrorist threats. ED O’K EEFE A ND K A RO U N D EMIR JI A N (THE WASHINGTON POST)

If you’re sipping your morning cup of joe while reading this, you’ll be happy to know that the World Health Organization released its long-anticipated report on coffee, and its findings bode well for your health. In reviewing the scientific evidence over the past 25 years since its last analysis on the matter, the WHO concluded that coffee should no longer be considered a carcinogen and that it may actually have positive effects for your body when it comes to two types of cancers — those of the liver and uterus. But the WHO report wasn’t all good news. There was another significant finding: “Very hot” beverages “probably” cause cancer. This is mostly based on studies related to the consumption of a traditional drink called mate or cimarrón in South America, where the tea can be taken at temperatures around 158 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s significantly hotter than people in North America usually consume their drinks. The findings were published in the Lancet Oncology on Wednesday. “These results suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause of esophageal cancer, and that it is the temperature, rather than the drinks themselves, that appears to be responsible,” said Christopher Wild, director of the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Boy’s body recovered after alligator attack 2-year-old snatched by the giant reptile at Disney World lagoon LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. The body of a 2-year-old Nebraska boy who was snatched off a Walt Disney World beach by an alligator and dragged underwater was recovered Wednesday, ending a search at one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. Divers found the body of Lane Graves about 16 hours after authorities first got the call that a reptile had taken the boy at Seven Seas Lagoon, part of the luxury Grand Floridian resort, across the 200-acre lake from Disney’s Magic Kingdom theme park. More than 50 law enforcement personnel searched the lagoon along with an alligator tracker and marine units equipped with sonar to search the lake’s mostly sandy, flat bottom. Sheriff Jerry Demings said it appeared the alligator drowned the child and left the body near the spot where he was last seen. An autopsy was planned. “Of course the family was distraught, but also I believe somewhat relieved that his body was found intact,” Demings said. The boy’s parents were identified as Matt and Melissa Graves of Elkhorn, Neb., a suburban area of Omaha. A family friend

released a statement on behalf of the couple thanking wellwishers for their “thoughts and hope-filled prayers.” Disney World closed beaches around Seven Seas Lagoon during the search, and it was not immediately clear when they would reopen. While “no swimming” signs are posted at the beach where the boy was attacked, no signs warn about alligators. Demings said his agency and the state wildlife agency would look into the signs. The sheriff said investigators would also review whether the boy’s parents should be charged, but it’s not likely.

“There’s nothing in this case to indicate that there was anything extraordinary” in terms of neglect by the parents, Demings said. The child had waded no more than 1 or 2 feet into the water of the lagoon around nightfall Tuesday, authorities said. The boy’s father desperately tried to fight off the alligator, which a witness says was 4 feet to 7 feet long. The father suffered lacerations on a hand, but could not save his son. Neither could a nearby lifeguard, officials said. No other alligator attacks have been reported on the man-made lake, according to Demings. JAY REEVES AND TERRANCE HARRIS (AP)

Putin officials deny hacking DNC RUSSIA When Russia faces uncomfortable accusations from abroad, the Kremlin normally lashes back with official declarations and scornful comments on state television. But when the Democratic National Committee and cybersecurity experts told The Washington Post that Russian government hackers had stolen an entire database of opposition research on presumptive GOP

presidential nominee Donald Trump, Russian officials met the accusations with little more than a simple denial and a shrug. “Usually these kinds of leaks take place not because hackers broke in, but, as any professional will tell you, because someone simply forgot the password or set the simple password 123456,” German Klimenko, President Vladimir Putin’s top internet adviser, said in remarks carried by the RIA Novosti state news agency. “Well, it’s always simpler to explain this away as the intrigues of enemies, rather than one’s own incompetence.” Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman

One adviser suggests a forgotten password led to the leaked data

for Putin, told reporters: “I absolutely rule out the possibility that the government or government agencies were involved in this.” Western officials have accused

Russia of conducting a campaign of high-profile hacking attacks that have included cyberattacks in 2007 against Estonia, a 2014 assault on Ukraine’s power grid

and a breach of the White House’s unclassified email server last year. The latest revelations risked plunging the Kremlin into the midst of a heated U.S. election cycle that has captured the attention of a Moscow elite eager for change in Washington. Over the years, the Kremlin has grown used to brushing off these kinds of accusations. Reports of hacking have become “ubiquitous,” Dmitri Trenin, director of the Carnegie Moscow Center and a former Russian army officer, said by telephone. “I don’t think that it’s something they will be really talking much about or worried about.” ANDREW ROTH (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Iran is set to unveil terms of a multibillion-dollar deal to purchase about 100 commercial passenger planes from Boeing in what would be the biggest sale of U.S. goods to Iran since the easing of economic sanctions last October, a person familiar with the deal said. Although financing arrangements are not complete, the historic agreement is likely to cover deliveries and services over nearly a decade at a cost of more than $17 billion. (TWP) CAIRO

Stanford sex assault judge removed from new case

The Kansas State Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday to ignore a directive from President Barack Obama’s administration that public schools allow transgender students to use restrooms matching their gender identity. Instead, the board left decisions up to school districts. What remains unclear is whether the 10-0 vote will endanger more than $479 million in federal aid, or about 10 percent of the state’s education budget. (AP)

What did killer’s wife know?

GUNMAN

Omar Mateen passed psychological evaluation Orlando nightclub shooter Omar Mateen passed a psychological evaluation in 2007 as part of his application to be a private security guard. Florida records show Mateen was determined to be mentally and emotionally stable in September 2007 so he could work for The Wackenhut Corp., later renamed G4S Secure Solutions. Records show he took a written psychological test or had an evaluation by a psychologist or psychiatrist. (AP)

married in 2009 — said that he beat her repeatedly while they were married. How authorities ultimately view Salman’s role and statements could potentially shift if she was a victim of abuse or feared for her life, officials say. “With respect to the wife, I can tell you that that is only one of many interviews we have done and will continue to do,” Ronald Hopper, FBI assistant special agent in charge, said at a news conference. While Hopper said “there are no impending charges,” officials on Wednesday would not discuss whether any charges may be filed in the future as part of the sprawling investigation into the shooting, which left 49 people dead and dozens wounded in the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

NATIONAL SECURITY Investigators continued Wednesday to look deeper at the family of the gunman who carried out a shooting rampage at a nightclub in Orlando, working to see if his wife had any prior knowledge of his plans before the attack. Authorities say Noor Z . Salman — who married Omar Mateen, the 29-year-old gunman, in 2011 — went with him at one point to buy ammunition, according to a U.S. law enforcement official familiar with the probe. The FBI has also learned from interviews with Salman, 30, that she accompanied him on at least one trip to Pulse before the attack for what a U.S. law enforcement official described as “reconnaissance.” The official said Salman warned Mateen not to carry out the attack, apparently as he was leaving Saturday night for Orlando. This official, who asked not to be identified discussing an ongoing investigation, said the couple surveilled the club between June 5 and June 9. FBI officials said Mateen bought the guns in early June. Investigators are still working to corroborate Salman’s story, according to authorities, and will try to determine if she suffered any abuse at the gunman’s hands. Official: Noor Z. Salman warned gunman not to carry out the attack

Noor Z. Salman, the wife of shooter Omar Mateen, hides her face from the cameras. The FBI is looking into whether she knew of Mateen’s plot.

Even as investigators looked into Salman, authorities offered few substantive new details Wednesday about the shooting at the popular gay club. Law enforcement officials said only in general terms that they were trying to reconstruct how the bullets flew inside the club Sunday morning and putting together a timeline of Mateen’s movements. Hopper said they had found

no evidence yet that Mateen intended to target any other locations except Pulse and that the club appeared to be his sole target. At least two witnesses at Pulse said Mateen had previously visited the club, and they also said they had seen him on Jack’d, a dating app for gay men. President Obama, who is traveling to Orlando today, has called the shooting “an act of terror and an act of hate,” while FBI Director James B. Comey said authorities were working to see if anti-gay sentiment played into the decision to attack the club. “This was an act of violence borne out of hate that inflicted terror on an entire community,” Hopper said Wednesday. “I would call it a hate crime, I would call it terrorism. It’s both.” MATT ZAPOTOSKY, ADAM GOLDMAN AND

Jordan Spieth won two majors in 2015 but collapsed this spring on the back nine at the Masters.

THREE POINTERS

Spieth trying to repeat The winner of last year’s U.S. Open faces a much more difficult course at Oakmont U.S. OPEN Jordan Spieth was 13 the last time the U.S. Open was held at Oakmont Country Club, so his recollection of Angel Cabrera’s winning score of 285 — 5 over par — comes from reading the internet. Only seven players in 2007 posted a subpar round; Cabrera had two of them. Last year, when Spieth won at Chambers Bay with a 5-under 275, eight players finished under par. Seventy players posted at least one subpar score. Spieth, 22, knows this Open course in suburban Pittsburgh will be a lot harder than last year’s layout in Washington state. The density of the Oakmont rough and the firmness of the greens have become popular

subjects on social media. “If it’s like it is right now, I think if you’re under par, you certainly win,” Spieth said as he prepared for today’s first round. “I don’t think it takes under par to win.” Spieth is trying to become only the sixth player — and the first since Curtis Strange in 1989 — to win back-to-back U.S. Open titles. And Spieth is trying to do it after failing to defend his title at the Masters, where he blew a five-shot lead on the final nine holes to hand Danny Willett the green jacket. Spieth benefited from someone else’s collapse at the Open last year. Dustin Johnson three-putted from 12 feet on the final hole to give Spieth a one-shot victory.

How tough is it? Ask Els Dealing with the deep rough and firm greens at Oakmont Country Club this week will be “a survival test,” said Ernie Els, who won the first of his four major titles at Oakmont in 1994. “This one is going to test your resolve — mental, physical, everything. You’re probably going to need a couple of days off after Sunday.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

“Ultimately, when I look back, I don’t remember Dustin’s putt,” Spieth said. “I remember us winning the U.S. Open.” If Spieth is to do it again, he said his priority at Oakmont is keeping the ball in the fairway and out of the rough.

How dense is the rough? Spieth’s closest friend on tour, Justin Thomas, posted a video on Instagram that tried to show his ball in the greenside rough at No. 17. But the ball was not visible even to someone standing over it. “Winning a U.S. Open is a different experience than winning at any other venue,” Spieth said. “You learn that literally anything can happen, especially ... the way the course is set up, the way the rough and the bunkers are. “If you don’t hit fairways on the last five holes, you could lose a 4- or 5-shot lead like that. “You can hit decent shots that just barely miss the fairway, and, all of a sudden, you have to do well to have 10 feet for par.”

NBA FINALS Warriors forward Draymond Green said Wednesday that getting suspended for Game 5 because of his latest flagrant foul made him a “terrible teammate.” He vowed to make amends tonight in Game 6, when the Warriors — who lead the series 3-2 — visit the Cavaliers (9, ABC). But I didn’t because I put myself in a situation where I wasn’t able to play.” The flagrant foul that triggered the suspension came after he became entangled with LeBron James and swiped at his groin. He called up some of his bandmates from Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers as well as his frequent collaborators for a cross-genre study of acoustic music. “One of the thesis statements of the week is going to be to look beyond genre and examine and celebrate the similarities between great instances of music making, rather than the differences,” he says. The Kennedy Center is describing the duo’s first show together in two years as a “Manhattan-style romp through the bluegrass canon.” Playing with Daves, with whom he released the 2011 Grammynominated album “Sleep With One Eye Open,” transports Thile back to their days making music in New York City in their mid-20s. “You might not see a dear friend for five years and then go out for drinks or something and then instantly get back to where you left off,” he says. “That’s how it feels when Michael and I play some tunes for the first time in a while.”

Atrium, June 23, 9:30 p.m., free (tickets, distributed prior to show in the States Gallery, required).

Every musician in the festival is invited to this improvisational show, and most have RSVP’d. “We’re just going to get onstage and see what happens,” Thile says. “The great thing about jamming is that you come in with zero preconceptions. Someone might want to play something that suggests something else to you, and the next thing you know you’re on a 20-minute adventure.” That’s why there’s no set run time for this show: “Because you never know when someone might get inspired and take a 3½-hour solo.”

Thile combined his favorite youngish creative minds (“None of us is going to be up for a senior discount any time VERY soon,” he notes) for the most diverse night of the festival. He’ll play with old friends — jazz guitarist Julian Lage and singer-songwriter Gabriel Kahane — and a new one, Merrill Garbus, better known as tUnE-yArDs. The indie-pop darling isn’t as out of place as you may think: Thile is actually a huge fan. “Gabriel Kahane turned me on to Merrill,” he says. “There’s just

Concert Hall, June 24, 8 p.m., sold out.

For this, the festival’s largest show, Thile combines the powers of his progressive bluegrass quintet the Punch Brothers, banjo master Bela Fleck, bass virtuoso Edgar Meyer, and the new trio I’m With Her, comprised of Aoife O’Donovan, Sarah Jarosz and Thile’s Nickel Creek co-founder Sara Watkins. “To get the sweetest threepart harmony you’ll hear from the two Sara(h)s and Aoife, onstage with two of American music’s greatest

instrumental virtuosos, and have that bonded together by whatever Punch Brothers are, that was a joy to conceive,” Thile says. “Thinking about that evening of music fills me with delight.”

Family Show With Chris Thile Family Theater, June 25, noon, $20.

Sure, Thile will be bestowing musical wisdom onto young people at this afternoon concert and Q&A session, but the secret is that he’s learning just as much from the kids. “I find their compositional curiosity to be so, so inspiring,” he says. “They’re seeing things that we as adults haven’t seen in 30 years.”

How to Play With Others; How to Sing With Others Atrium, June 25, 4 & 6 p.m., free (tickets, distributed prior to talks in the States Gallery, required).

Before you ask: No, this is not your chance to get free singing lessons from Aoife O’Donovan, or banjo lessons from the Punch Brothers. Instead Thile and his collaborators will answer some of the questions he says he gets all the time. Such as? “ ‘What’s it like to play with X?’ or ‘In an improvisatory setting, how do you pick up on this or that cue?’ or ‘How do you grab a harmony part?’ and the like,” Thile says. “We’ll be delighted to shed some light on the nuts and bolts of what we do up there.”

COMEDY Sitting in a prison cell at the age of 25, Derrick “Capone” Lee had a lot of time to think. The man now known as the Gangster of Comedy — who has shared stages with Tracy Morgan and Shaquille O’Neal and hosted weekly shows at the Apollo Theater — had spent the previous eight years selling drugs in the Bronx, where he was born and raised. But sometime during his ninemonth sentence, Lee realized that “three hots and a cot” was not a future he could deal with. Lee’s life needed a rebranding. “Prison was definitely something that I needed at that time,” Lee says. “Drug dealing was never a thing that I wanted to do — it was almost something I got into because everybody else was doing it. I knew that jail wasn’t the place I wanted to spend the rest of my life, so it was given up right there.” (Lee’s camp wouldn’t release

details of his sentence or his age.) For his first job out of prison, Lee served as a home attendant for the mentally disabled, trading the street corners where he used to conduct business for living rooms. He knew he liked helping people, especially through laughter. But it wasn’t until some prodding by the regulars at the barbershop where he also worked that he considered trying comedy for real. “It definitely wasn’t something where I said, ‘Hey, I’m gonna be a comedian,’ ” Lee says. “Everybody was like, ‘You gotta give that a shot.’ ” Lee discovered he was a natural with a mic in his hand. In the years since he made his comedy debut in a 1992 amateur contest at Columbia University, he’s made his mark as host of the legendary Amateur Night at Harlem’s famed Apollo and with appearances on HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam.” Unflinchingly real and unabashedly provocative, Lee is not one to avoid controversial topics onstage. Race, gender, sex, religion — name a touchy subject, Lee is going there. Always the business type, Lee realized

early on that he needed a brand to stand out in New York’s hypercompetitive comedy scene. Thus was born Capone, the Gangster of Comedy. The name Capone was given to him during his days on the street, Lee says, as a nod to the similarities between his demeanor and that of legendary Chicago gangster Al Capone. Both were big personalities who made a living through unsavory means. “A gangster doesn’t have to be somebody that’s tough,” Lee says. “But you can look at a person and know that that’s not a person you should f--- with.” When Lee entered comedy, he was told the gangster moniker wasn’t a wise career move. People might be uncomfortable with the connotations, he heard. “If you believe in your brand, you don’t give it up just because some people don’t believe it,” Lee says. “I’ve sold drugs, I’ve sold many different things. Now I’m just selling myself — and I’m not selling myself short.” SAM TABACHNIK (FOR EXPRESS)

A bromance for the ages STAGE Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are the stars of a play in Bethesda — sort of. “Matt & Ben,” a 2002 satirical fantasy co-written by a then-unknown Mindy Kaling (who also played Ben in the original production), imagines what the two aspiring Hollywood heartthrobs did in 1995, just before writing their Oscar-winning drama “Good Will Hunting.” In the play, being staged by Flying V Theatre at The Writer’s Center, Matt and Ben mostly spend their days writing, eating Doritos and dreaming about Gwyneth Paltrow. Because it’s hard to remember what the BFFs were like before the Jennifers and the Bournes, we asked Matt (played by Tia Shearer) and Ben (Katie Jeffries) to fill us in on what life is like for them in 1995. LORI McCUE (EXPRESS) Tell me about your lives. MATT: We’ve got a couple of writing projects going on. Lots of people don’t realize this but we’re really good writers. We were both in “School Ties” fairly recently — that was pretty cool. BEN: I would say [my] apartment is our HQ, because I don’t live with my mom. MATT: We didn’t have to mention that, but OK. BEN: We’re hoping to pull each other into the scene. Matt’s really, really smart, and I’m fantastic-looking. MATT: You have … other qualities.

You probably recognize Matt Damon (Tia Shearer, left) and Ben Affleck (Katie Jeffries) from their movies.

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY FILM RIFFS

What are you so afraid of?

JAMES RYAN PHOTOGRAPHY

‘Matt & Ben’ imagines the Damon/Affleck dynamic, circa 1995

Are you guys looking for love? BEN: My plan is for us to be best friends and our wives to be best friends and our kids to be best friends and that just be like a rule for the family. Early on when I’m dating someone, I’ll say, “I don’t know when Matt’s getting married, but you’re going to have to be best friends with her.” MATT: We used to say we would co-coach our kids’ soccer team together. Any directors you’d love to work with? BEN: I really want George Lucas to make more “Star Wars” movies, and then I would be in them. I don’t know how probable that is. MATT: My list is so long. Steven Spielberg for sure. Ridley Scott!

Like a “Lost in Space” odyssey would be amazing. So much time by yourself. BEN: I like how we both want to be in space. Who would win in a space battle? BEN: Me for sure. MATT: Why? Because you’re taller? Let’s move on. Do you guys have dream roles? MATT: Ben wants to play all of the superheroes. BEN: But can you imagine how much it would suck to play a big superhero in a movie and then everybody thinks the movie isn’t good? Well, it is 1995, so “Batman

Forever” is out. What did you think of Val Kilmer as Batman? BEN: I think there’s a lot of room for improvement. I mean, I don’t think “superhero” when I see Val Kilmer, that’s all I’m saying. I just think that someone else could do a better job. If you guys become big actors, will you advocate for any causes? MATT: My big cause is junk mail. How much junk mail do you get? No one wants that. Think of how many trees we’re killing to make junk mail. BEN: I want a meatball-sub flavor of Doritos. Is that a cause?

indies Landmark E Street Cinema, 555 11th St. NW; opens Fri., $9.50-$12. +arties If you like Brian De Palma’s movies (which include “Carrie,” “Scarface”

and “The Untouchables”), you will like “De Palma,” in which Brian De Palma talks about what it’s like to be Brian De Palma and direct Brian De Palma movies. From a film history perspective, it’s fun to see how De Palma came of age with Spielberg and Scorsese, but directors Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow’s documentary is really just made for those who are already fans of the man. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

In “Clown,” out Friday, a dad dresses up as a clown for his kid’s birthday party, but the costume turns out to be cursed and makes the guy evil. Which will come as no surprise to the many people for whom clowns are already evil. Lots of phobia-inducers can be found on the big screen. ‘THE WALK’: Acrophobes should avoid this Robert Zemeckis film, which tells the true story of Philippe Petit’s 1974 walk between the Twin Towers in dizzying, vomit-inducing detail. ‘BURIED’: Ryan Reynolds starred in this 2010 film as a man who is buried alive with only a lighter and a cellphone for help. Unfortunately he runs down the battery playing Words With Friends. ‘FLIGHT’: Zemeckis gets another slot on this list, which makes us wonder what, exactly, he has against audiences who would like a nice, non-terrifying time at the movies. ‘SNAKES ON A PLANE’: This 2006 camp classic combines the fear of snakes (reasonable), the fear of flying (also reasonable) and the fear that Samuel L. Jackson can’t make it through a movie without at least one F-bomb (very reasonable). ‘EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS’:

Chemicals plus spiders never ends up well for anyone. Particularly anyone who would prefer that arachnids not grow to the size of cars. So, everyone.

District Fishwife

Espita Mezcaleria 1250 Ninth St. NW

The maitake mushroom taco is a satisfying vegetarian option. The robust pop of flavor comes mostly from the simple toppings, like pickled onion and tomatillo salsa.

1309 Fifth St. NE

Beer-battered and deep-fried to crispy, flaky perfection, the fish and chips comes with Pacific cod and golden-brown wedge chips.

Kinship 1015 Seventh St. NW

Chef Eric Ziebold’s white mushroom torchon is decadent,

thanks to a generous amount of butter pureed into the mix that also includes caramelized garlic and onions.

This new bakery specializes in merveilleux, a snowball-like Franco-Belgian pastry of whipped cream or ganache sandwiched between layers of meringue.

4000 Wilson Blvd., Arlington

The disparate elements in the panseared scallops with basil ice cream create a delicious twist on familiar flavors. They arrive in a deep bowl atop fragrant coconut risotto.

Bitter end: Where Ford’s Theatre gets interesting Compared to D.C.’s other attractions, Ford’s Theatre gets surprisingly few visitors. In 2015, they logged just 681,537 — about the same number that visited the Hirshhorn — while the Lincoln Memorial got 7.9 million visitors. You’d think America’s most famous crime scene would have more mass appeal than a modern art museum, but I was among the droves not visiting Ford’s Theatre (511 10th St. NW). So I bought a ticket online for $10.25 and, one rainy afternoon, got in line behind a massive school group. Eventually a ranger let us in, and we walked down a narrow staircase with a display case at the bottom. I stopped to examine its contents: a knife, brass knuckles and what appeared to be swim goggles. A label explained that these items were carried by one of Lincoln’s bodyguards — the one who, I’m assuming, specialized in fending off known Southern sympathizer Aquaman. Confusion gave way to chaos as I entered the main

exhibit hall. Thunder clapped and strobes flashed around an imitation Oval Office as a tornado of schoolchildren swirled through the room. I froze, not knowing which direction to walk. “The exhibits go chronologically,” a ranger explained. “Start here, at the first inauguration.” He pointed me toward a couple of displays that seemed more focused on how crappy D.C. used to be than on Lincoln’s presidency. On my right was a replica of the half-built Capitol dome; on my left were mid-19th-century photos of the city. The accompanying text was unflattering. “Washington City … was a raw, unsanitary place,” it said. “From the White House, the new president could look across the malarial Potomac Flats to the marble stump of the Washington Monument … Worse, he could smell the rotting City Canal, an open sewer … into which local residents tossed dead animals.” It’s as if Ford’s Theatre was speaking directly to tourists, saying, “D.C. may be crowded and pricey, but at least it’s not still an open-air pet cemetery.”

I was almost up to Lincoln’s second inauguration when a ranger announced that our time was up and herded everyone into the theater. “It happened right there,” a frizzy-haired girl said in a near-whisper while pointing at the president’s box. “Can you see the blood?” her friend replied. (You can’t, because the entire interior of the theater was redone in the 1960s.) A tall woman in an elaborate red dress swept down the aisle on the arm of a dashing Union soldier, and took the stage. “My name is Liz,” she said. “I’m a volunteer, and Lincoln is my favorite president.” That was an understatement. Liz talked about Lincoln as if she knew him personally. “He had a great sense of

humor,” she said. When Liz got to the gruesome part, she rattled off details with the numbed precision of a traumatized witness. “Booth pulls out the oneshot derringer, holds it less than 6 inches from the president’s head, and fires a bullet … 2 inches from the president’s left ear,” she said. “The president slumped forward in his chair.” It was an inspired performance, but I was unsatisfied. From the Capitol dome to the president’s box, almost everything I had seen was fake. With a ranger’s permission, I returned to the museum to search for real artifacts. There, I found myself at the end of the exhibit. I peeked behind a partition and saw a little gun in a clear plastic box. “Is that it?” I asked a ranger. “Is that John Wilkes Booth’s gun?” “Yes,” he said. “A lot of people miss it.” It turns out that Ford’s Theatre has lots of fascinating things on display that are easy to miss. I also found Booth’s

left boot, split to fit his swelling, broken ankle, and the medical kit of Samuel Mudd, a doctor who treated Booth’s injuries. Then, I saw some artifacts that actually made my stomach turn: the suit that Lincoln wore that fateful night and a bloodstained pillowcase upon which his head had rested. A world that had previously seemed so distant — where livestock roamed muddy streets and the president went out in public like it was no big deal — was suddenly close enough to make me feel a little sick. It’s too bad that Ford’s hides its authentic treasures behind replicas and reconstructions. I suspect that’s why it doesn’t get as many visitors as it should. That said, I definitely recommend checking it out for yourself. But don’t make my mistake: Skip the facsimiles and seek out the real objects that, like America, still bear the marks of Lincoln’s death. In two weeks: The Staycationer visits Madame Tussauds.

weekendpass What do you like about stand-up? I did stand-up comedy for seven years early in my career — I just took off a couple of decades. It’s really fun to write jokes every day and go onstage at night and build an act. It’s nothing but fun and I also like that it gives me an excuse to be at the clubs and hang out with all these comedians that I admire and normally wouldn’t see just sitting in my room alone writing screenplays.

Judd Apatow returned to his stand-up comedy roots two years ago and now performs regularly in clubs like the Laugh Factory.

Standing up — again Judd Apatow steps out from behind the camera and returns to stand-up comedy Q&A Two years ago, Judd Apatow relapsed. For the first time in more than two decades, the writer, director and producer behind many of comedy’s most beloved movies and television shows did something he hadn’t done since his 20s: stand-up comedy. “While we were shooting ‘Trainwreck,’ I got jealous of how much fun Amy [Schumer] was having and I felt like I wanted to be closer to the audience,” Apatow says. So, at 46, Apatow returned to the craft he’d started when he was 17. He’s been hosting bimonthly Judd Apatow and Friends shows in Los Angeles, performing in between gigs writing, directing and

producing TV shows like HBO’s “Girls” and Netflix’s “Love.” On Saturday, he brings the live show to Washington as part of the District of Comedy Festival. What will the D.C. version of Judd Apatow and Friends be like? It’s going to be me, Michael Che from “Saturday Night Live” and Pete Holmes. I’m producing his HBO series, “Crashing,” which is going to air early next year. He has a great podcast called “You Made It Weird.” Didn’t you two meet on the podcast at a live taping in Austin in 2012? We did. My friend Dave Rath is

“It’s really fun to write jokes every day and go onstage at night. … I also like that it gives me an excuse to be at the clubs and hang out with all these comedians.” his manager and I did his podcast and at the time I didn’t even know who he was. It’s funny because on that podcast the other guests were Kumail Nanjiani

from “Silicon Valley” and Chris Gethard, and right now I’m producing a stand-up special for Chris Gethard and I’m producing Kumail Nanjiani’s movie, “The Big Sick,” which is shooting right now in New York, and I’m producing Pete’s HBO series, so it was the most important podcast of my life. And I hadn’t met any of them before that day. That seems to be a theme for your career, though. You find great talent, then you nurture it. Well, sometimes I feel like there’s kismet, and if you pay attention you meet certain people for a reason at certain times and you follow those roads.

RICH POLK (GETTY IMAGES)

What does it mean to you to be asked to perform as a headliner in the Kennedy Center’s first comedy festival? It’s a real dream come true for me. I’ve been watching events from the Kennedy Center since I was a little kid. It really is among the most favorite things I’ve been able to do and it’s an exciting time to be in Washington and talk about all the interesting things that are happening. Do you have any election material? I do talk about it a little bit, but I’m really excited to see what Michael Che has to say. I know he’s been deep in it all year at “SNL,” but I think it’s very different in his stand-up act. He gets a chance to really expand on all his opinions about everything and I don’t think there’s anyone more brilliant about all those issues than Michael. How does your act now compare to your first seven years of doing it? When I was young, I was fresh out of college — or in high school and college — and I didn’t have a lot of experience. I wasn’t really upset about anything. I didn’t have too many opinions. Now I’m in my late 40s and I’ve been through a lot. I’ve had a lot of good and bad things happen, so I have stories to tell and it’s completely different than when I used to try to come up with jokes about how girls didn’t like me when I was a 21-year-old. Now I can talk about how my kids don’t like me. RUDI GREENBERG (EXPRESS)

Lucius’ double vision With ‘Good Grief,’ the indie act embraces pop music theatrics

MUSIC In the video for Lucius’ maddeningly catchy single “Gone Insane,” singers Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig sit across from each other while Laessig pokes and prods at Wolfe’s face, molding it as if it were made of clay. To create the illusion for the clip, which was shot in four days using stop-motion animation, Wolfe had to repeatedly sing “Gone Insane” 600 times slower than normal while wearing prosthetics that took hours to glue on. “My skin by the end of the week was basically burnt, it was so painful,” Wolfe says. “You do the best you can, but it’s so intense to sing a song like that so slow. It makes you go crazy. It probably helps the performance.” It was worth the temporary madness for Wolfe to see her idea — which came to her in a dream — become a reality. “We knew during the shooting it was going to be very special,” she says. “It doesn’t always happen that way where your vision is perfectly executed.”

It helps that Wolfe and Laessig have a clear vision for their fivepiece indie-pop band — down to the visual aesthetics. Best friends who met at the Berklee College of Music, Wolfe and Laessig dress like twins, with matching hairstyles and eye-catching outfits they choose themselves. “Before we get onstage, we’re getting into our gear, and it’s a ritual,” Wolfe says. “Of course sometimes it’d be nice to just wear a pair of jeans or some pajamas but I wouldn’t feel right representing the music that way. I wouldn’t feel as excited. I think

there’s something about being swept away into a landscape, or into a story, being taken there visually and aurally. I see the way that people are journeying with us, and I think it’s working.” Onstage, Wolfe and Laessig sing facing each other, as if they have one voice. “In the studio, we record all parts together, lead parts, harmony parts, we’re both singing,” Wolfe says. (In that sense, there are four voices, with each singer doing a lead and harmony vocal.) “We’re always singing together.” Musically, Lucius — in town

The great gig in the desert Lucius vocalists Jess Wolfe (above left) and Holly Laessig (above right) have a résumé brimming with collaborations, including work with My Morning Jacket and Jeff Tweedy. Last July, Wolfe and Laessig’s side gig as backup singers hit a new high when Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters asked them to join his band at the Newport Folk Festival. “How do you say no to Roger Waters?” Wolfe says. The experience went so well that Waters has invited the pair to be in his band for October’s Desert Trip festival in California, which will also feature Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Who, The Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney. “I don’t think a weekend like this will ever happen again,” Wolfe says. “It’s a serious honor and privilege and I’m just going to soak in every moment possible.” R.G.

for a sold-out performance Sunday at the 9:30 Club that will be streamed live on NPR Music’s Facebook page — has evolved from the folksy pop of 2014’s “Wildewoman” to the unabashed ’80s-influenced pop of March’s “Good Grief.” Though it’s a more upbeat and high-energy record, the new album’s lyrics oscillate between darkness and tongue-incheek humor. When it comes to songwriting, Wolfe and Laessig collaborate on every lyric, usually settling on a melody before bringing the song to the rest of the group, which includes Wolfe’s husband, Dan Molad. “If Holly’s going through something, I’m seeing her going through it, because we’re together all the time and we happen to also be best friends,” Wolfe says. “We’re experiencing on behalf of the other, in a sense, so it’s an intimate experience and one that is definitely unique.” RUDI GREENBERG (EXPRESS)

With last year’s “Currents,” Australia’s Tame Impala solidified its place as music’s most psychedelic rock band. Led by singer-guitarist Kevin Parker, Tame Impala gleefully embraces that vibe, often performing in front of a trippy, iTunes-visualizer-like backdrop. With “Currents,” Parker expanded Tame Impala’s psych rock to include more electronic elements and maintained his knack for pop hooks (see: the irresistible slow jam “ ’Cause I’m a Man”). Opening for the band at Merriweather is M83, another electronic-infused pop act led by a singular voice: French musician Anthony Gonzalez, who broke big with the anthem “Midnight City” in 2011.

In March, DC Brau released cans of Heurich’s Lager, an easy-drinking beer inspired by the lagers of Washington’s largest preProhibition brewery, the Christian Heurich Brewing Company. This week, DC Brau brings its last kegs of the beer to a party at the place that keeps Heurich’s legacy alive, the Heurich House Museum. Tickets include unlimited beer, snacks and tours. Former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, 75, is hitting the road again for a series of concerts that can often feel like a pop revue. Members of His All-Starr Band, which includes singer-guitarist Todd Rundgren, Toto’s Steve Lukather and Santana’s Gregg Rolie, trade vocals and solos on Beatles classics (like beloved singalong “With a Little Help From My Friends”), as well as hits from their own respective bands. Warner Theatre, 513 13th St. NW; Fri., 8 p.m., $190-$425.

Dave Matthews Band started its annual marathon summer tour in early May with a hometown show in Charlottesville, Va., where the band formed in 1991. In line with their jam-band roots, Matthews and company change their set lists every night. But fans hoping to catch the unexpected should do so during this year’s 25th anniversary jaunt: The band has announced it will take a hiatus from touring in 2017. FRIDAY

Grace Potter: Sometimes when an artist goes solo it’s in name only. Grace Potter, however, has transformed herself from roots goddess playing a Hammond B3 organ to glitter-clad bona fide pop star. Potter’s solo debut, “Midnight,” is nothing less than an artistic reboot — what was once subtle and basking in the traditions of Nashville is now brash, bold and hyper-rhythmic. See for yourself at her two 9:30 Club shows on Wednesday and June 23.

D.C. post-punk group Deathfix. In this new duo, he quietly minds an arsenal of keyboards while Jason Barnes, left, a classically trained singer with a serious Grace Jones jones, belts a sleek mix of originals and covers, including the Iggy Pop tune that inspired the band’s name. reappraisal of Appel’s work, which includes exhibitions in The Hague, Paris and Munich. Permanent collection: The museum houses a collection of modern and contemporary American and European art including Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s iconic “Luncheon of the Boating Party,” Jacob Lawrence’s “Migration Series,” a room dedicated to Mark Rothko and a wax room by Wolfgang Laib. ‘OITNB’ actor talks TV, celebrity and Taystee Fans see themselves in Danielle Brooks’ inmate alter ego TELEVISION Spend a few minutes with Danielle Brooks and it’s easy to see why, fresh out of Juilliard, she was cast as orphan-turnedinmate Tasha “Taystee” Jefferson in the highly popular female prison dramedy “Orange Is the New Black.” Like her alter ego, the 26-yearold is warm, vivacious and refreshingly free of affectation. The actress made her Broadway debut late last year in a revival of “The Color Purple” and was nominated for a Tony Award. Netflix is releasing the fourth season of “OITNB” Friday. Why do you think Taystee has become such a fan favorite? I think they see themselves. A lot of black women haven’t gotten the chance to see more than just the sassy black woman or the

angry black woman. There’s so much depth to her. I think they appreciate her innocence as well as her harsh mouth. She’s trying to show that she’s capable of making it in the world. I think that’s why people love Taystee. I know that’s why I love Taystee. It’s crazy how the writers have spun it because now … she’s become the mother [this season]. You trained at Juilliard and then went straight into TV. What have you learned from working in the medium? Unlike theater, you don’t have a long rehearsal period at all. You just do it. You have limited time to make choices. TV has taught me to make bold choices in the moment, the minute they come to you, and not to hold back. You’ve said before that your life changed in 13 hours when “Orange Is the New Black” was introduced to audiences. It did. You start to go to restaurants and people are looking and

Ricky Gervais to revive his “The Office” role on Netflix

all of a sudden you have a bill that says zero on it and you’re, “OK, this is different.” Then all of a sudden you have a hair stylist and a makeup artist and a publicist and a lawyer. I love acting because I get to observe people, I get to walk in Central Park and watch someone playing with their child and that’s fun for me. Now, the tables have turned, and people are watching me go to the bathroom, or how I eat, or how I speak. It was a lot to take in in a short amount of time.

Today is the grand opening of the $5.5 billion Shanghai Disneyland, Disney’s first theme park in mainland China. To appeal to Chinese visitors, Disney added a teahouse and other China-themed elements to its latest park. In a garden leading to its iconic castle, Disney created a “Garden of the Twelve Friends,” using characters such as Remy from “Ratatouille” and Tigger from “Winnie the Pooh” to represent animals of the Chinese Zodiac. The park boasts the biggest Storybook Castle in the world, and is expected to draw 50 million guests a year. The total number of visitors to theme parks is forecast to more than double to 282 million in 2019 from 2014’s 133 million, according to research group Euromonitor International. (AP)

What’s the most interesting or unexpected response you’ve gotten from a fan? One time I was walking down the street, on 42nd Street, and this guy was with his son and he stopped me and was like, “I’ve been incarcerated before and I know many Taystees, so thank you for being honest in what you do.” People really are seeing themselves in the characters. That book has been postponed, according to Flatiron Books. The imprint is expected to release several nonfiction works per year, all chosen by Winfrey. (AP)

STRUMMING REVIVAL.

School Without Walls at Francis Stevens students won top honors for their idea to build a rain garden on their campus and a retaining wall for the sycamore in front of their school.

Thank you to all the students, teachers and partners who participated this year! Agrium provided nearly $20,000 in cash prizes and school awards! Caring for Our Watersheds is supported by international nonprofit Earth Force, whose mission is to engage young people as active citizens who improve the environment and their communities, now and in the future. The program empowers students to imagine, develop, and create solutions in their local watersheds, developing problem-solving, budgeting, community-involvement, and presentation skills. Turning ideas into realistic solutions is the key to improving our local watersheds.

“What can you do to improve your local watershed?”

He made a surprise appearance Monday at an event in Manhattan to introduce the prophylactics, which feature a “resilient honeycomb-like” structure, from the Swedish sextoy brand LELO. The brand’s chief marketing officer said Sheen, who is HIV-positive, is “the perfect choice for LELO, a tragic reflection of the current situation in sexual health of today, but more importantly, a symbol of change with the strength and the courage to confront key issues head on.” A pack of 12 HEX condoms costs $20. Sheen will be stopping in several cities to promote the product. (EXPRESS)
