Shootings Deemed Hate Crime ROBERT WILLETT (THE NEWS & OBSERVER/AP)

Accused gunman has long history of supremacist beliefs Overland Park, Kan. Never one to keep his hatred to himself, Frazier Glenn Cross for decades sought out any soapbox to espouse his white-supremacist beliefs, twice running for federal office with campaigns steeped in anti-Semitism. Yet there’s scant evidence the Army veteran and retired trucker with Ku Klux Klan links ever resorted to violence before Sunday, when authorities say Cross opened fire with a shotgun and pistol outside a Jewish community center and retirement complex near Kansas City. None of the three people killed turned out to be Jewish. The 73-year-old, who shouted a

While the FBI was familiar with Cross, Sunday’s gunfire was “very random,” the FBI’s Michael Kaste said. “We don’t really see how this could have been prevented,” said Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate

Utah Mom Admits to Killing 6 of Her Newborns Pleasant Grove, Utah Megan Huntsman was clear about what she did with six of her newborn babies. The 39-year-old told police she either strangled or suffocated them immediately after they were born. She wrapped their bodies in a towel or a shirt, put them in plastic bags and then packed

them inside boxes in the garage of her home south of Salt Lake City. W h a t ’s n o t clear is why. A day Huntsman after her arrest on charges of killing her six babies, investigators and her neighbors puzzled over the grisly

discovery, including how she could have concealed a half-dozen pregnancies over a 10-year period. Huntsman, who was arrested Sunday on six counts of murder, was ordered held on $6 million bail. During the 1980s, he was “one of the more notorious white supremacists in the U.S.,” according to the Anti-Defamation League. In Cross’ southwestern Missouri hometown Monday, most waved off the opportunity to discuss the man authorities suspect killed William Lewis Corporon and his grandson, Reat Griffin Underwood, outside the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City. One Year Later, Boston’s Healing Marathon bombings shook city, but many say it’s now stronger

Every time Roseann Sdoia comes home, she must climb 18 steps — six stairs into the building, 12 more to her apartment. It is an old building in Boston’s North End, with doors that are big and heavy, not an easy place for an amputee to live. When she left the hospital, a month after the Boston Marathon bombings, she had a choice: She could find another place to live, one more suitable for someone who wears a prosthetic leg. Or, she could stay. “Early on when all this happened, so many people were telling me to move out of the city and move out of my apartment because of the stairs,” she said. “But I have been able to get past all of that.” In that, she mirrors Boston itself. In the course of a year, limbs have been replaced, psyches soothed, the wounds sustained in

Boston

Then and Now The year since Jeff Bauman was pushed in a wheelchair from the Boston Marathon, his legs ravaged and his face ashen, has been marked by pain and difficulty but also by triumphs: He’s learned to walk on new prosthetic legs, at right; he’s gotten engaged; and he’s an expectant father. Bauman, 28, became one of the most recognizable symbols of Boston’s resilience after the April 15 attacks — immortalized in the above Associated Press photo. And he became a hero days later when he was able to help authorities identify one of the suspects. As for that photo? “I never look at it. I can’t. … That just brings me right back to me laying on the ground.” (AP)

a moment at the marathon’s finish line have at least begun to heal. At the same time, a city shaken by an unthinkable act of terrorism has returned to its usual rhythms — sadder, but some say stronger, as well. “I have to tell you, honestly, Boston is a better city now than it was before,” says Thomas Menino, Boston’s former mayor. “People learned how to deal with each other, they had to deal with a tragedy.” Not that it’s been easy. Three people were killed that day, more than 260 were injured, and the legacy of trauma and lost limbs remains — as does the shock of having endured a terrorist attack. Nor can Bostonians forget the fear that gripped a city locked down in the midst of a manhunt. But Boston has been able to get past all of that. Copley Square is no longer littered with impromptu tributes; they’re now on display at the Boston Public Library, where Robert White saw meaning in every teddy bear and pair of sneakers: “Every last one of the items says ‘Boston Strong’ or ‘I will return next year.’ ” DENISE LAVOIE AND PAIGE SUTHERLAND (AP)

New York The Washington Post and The Guardian won the Pulitzer Prize in public service Monday for revealing the U.S. government’s sweeping surveillance efforts in a series of stories based on secret documents handed over by National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden. The Pulitzer for breaking news was awarded to The Boston Globe for its “exhaustive and empathetic” coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing and manhunt. Two of the nation’s most distinguished newspapers, The Post and The New York Times, won two Pulitzers each. The Pulitzer for explanatory reporting went to the Post’s Eli Saslow for reporting on food stamps in America. The New York Times won twice in photography: Tyler Hicks in the breaking news category for documenting the mall terrorist attack in Kenya, and Josh Haner for his essay on Jeff Bauman, a Boston Marathon blast victim who lost his legs. PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA

Pistorius Accused of Staging Outbursts at Trial Oscar Pistorius came under intense pressure Monday at his murder trial from the chief prosecutor, who dismissed his account of how he killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp as a flimsy web of lies and accused the double-amputee Olympian of staging emotional outbursts to mask difficulty in answering a barrage of probing questions. Pistorius struggled to explain alleged inconsistencies in his testimony and broke down sobbing on two occasions, forcing Judge Thokozile Masipa to temporarily halt proceedings. (AP)

With pro-Russian militants attacking more buildings in eastern Ukraine on Monday and ignoring a government deadline to disperse, Ukraine’s acting president said he would welcome United Nations peacekeepers to help establish order by conducting a “joint counterterrorist operation” with Ukrainian forces. A statement posted on his official website said President Oleksandr Turchy nov raised the matter in a telephone call with U.N. Secretary General Ban K i-moon, accusing Russia of sending “special units” to eastern

Chilean Fire Still Rages Helicopters and airplanes dumped water on wildfires and the smoldering wreckage of hilltop neighborhoods Monday in Valparaiso, Chile, as sailors in riot gear prepared to evacuate 700 more families who would be endangered if the winds turn again. Already 8,000 people were homeless as wildfires sent burning embers flying from hilltop to hilltop, destroying 2,000 homes in this picturesque coastal city. The fires have killed 12 people, and injured more than 500. (AP)

About 40 vehicles were destroyed Monday in the explosion in Abuja, Nigeria.

said civil servant Ben Nwachukwu. Authorities said the death toll was sure to climb because it did not include victims whose bodies were dismembered, the health ministry said. A counter-terrorism expert said the bomb appeared to have been buried underground, while the

emergency management agency said the explosives were apparently hidden in a vehicle. President Goodluck Jonathan visited the scene and blamed Boko Haram, an Islamic extremist group which operates in the northeast of Nigeria and which has been threatening to attack Nigeria’s capital.

The authenticity of Oscar Pistorius’ emotions was questioned Monday.

Suspected Islamic militants struck in the heart of Nigeria on Monday with a massive rush-hour bomb blast at a bus station that killed at least 72 people and wounded 164 in the deadliest attack ever on the nation’s capital. Survivors screamed in anguish and the stench of burning fuel and flesh hung over the area, where billows of black smoke rose as firefighters worked to put out the fires. Rescue workers and police gathered body parts as ambulances rushed the wounded to hospitals. “I can’t count the number of people that died. They took them in open vehicles. People were running and there was confusion,”

Boko Haram — the nickname means “Western education is forbidden” — has been attacking schools, villages, market places and military barracks and checkpoints in Nigeria this year in increasingly frequent and deadly attacks. Its mission is to force an Islamic state on Nigeria whose 170 million people are divided almost equally between Muslims living mainly in the north and Christians in the south. (AP)

Police in eastern Ukraine were attacked Monday by pro-Russian militants.

Ukraine to “conduct armed seizure of the administrative buildings and threaten lives of hundreds of thousands of our citizens.” He said Russia was repeating the

scenario of its takeover of Crimea last month, but he noted that the situation in eastern Ukraine is different “because the majority of people do not want to support separatists.” Peacekeepers, however, would have to be authorized by the U.N. Security Council, where Russia holds a veto. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov again denied Monday that Russian agents were operating in eastern Ukraine, saying it would contradict Moscow’s interests. He challenged Ukraine “not to be shy” about backing its claims of capturing Russian security officers with facts. (AP/ THE WASHINGTON POST )

The number of insurgent attacks in Afghanistan on April 5, its election day,

according to data released by the U.S. military, making it an unusually violent day. The numbers fly in the face of the perception that the country seemed unusually calm on election day, and that the Taliban had intentionally allowed the election to proceed. Still, the attacks didn’t stop some 7 million Afghans from voting in the first round of presidential elections. (AP)

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombing, though bus stations are a favored Boko Haram target. Inter pol secreta r y general Ronald K. Syrian Troops Capture Rebel Strongholds Maaloula, Syria Syrian troops triumphantly swept through some of the last remaining opposition strongholds north of Damascus, including a much coveted ancient Christian hamlet, sending rebel fighters fleeing to nearby hills amid an ever tightening noose. The dramatic capture of Sarkha, Maaloula and Jibbeh was the fastest series of army successes against rebels in the Qalamoun region since the government launched an offensive in November in the strategic area, a wedge of mountainous territory between the capital and the Lebanese border. The string of military achievements there this year by government forces adds another layer of defense for Damascus. (AP)

France Casts Wide Net in Search for Rapist 475 students subject to DNA testing in bid to find an assailant Paris French investigators began taking DNA samples Monday from 527 male students and staff at a high school — including boys as young as 14 — as they searched for the assailant who raped a teenage girl on the closed campus. All those who received summonses at Fenelon-Notre Dame high school in western France last week were warned that any refusal could land them in police custo-

dy, and no one rejected the sweeping request to test the high school’s male population. The testing of students, faculty and staff at the school is expected to last through Wednesday, with 40 DNA swabs recovered inside two large study halls. Prosecutor Isabelle Pagenelle said investigators had exhausted all other leads in the Sept. 30 rape of the girl in a

dark bathroom at the school. Police recovered genetic material from the girl’s clothing but found no matches among current profiles. Summonses went out last week to 475 teenage students, 31 teachers and 21 others — either staff or males who were on campus at the time. Pagenelle’s office, which required parental permission for minors, promised to discard any

DNA results from people who were eliminated as suspects. While there have been other situations in which DNA samples have been taken en masse, the case is complicated for France, where acceptance is widespread for DNA testing and a national database maintains profiles of people detained for even minor crimes. But children’s civil liberties are considered sacred, especially within schools. “It’s clearly a situation where people do not have a choice,” said Catherine Bourgain, a genetic researcher and author of “DNA, Superstar or Supercop.” “Once you have a DNA file, it’s very difficult to get that information erased.” LORI HINNANT (AP)

Rapid Bikeshare Expansion Slows New local stations on hold as maker of the red bikes goes bust Washington After three years of rapid growth, Washington’s acclaimed bike-share program is coming to a standstill — at least temporarily. Capital Bikeshare’s expansion to College Park, Md., is stalled and new stations planned in the District and Alexandria are delayed, officials say. The reason? The bike network has been unable to purchase new bikes and docking stations since the system’s sole bike equipment pro-

vider’s bankruptcy filing. Day-to-day operations of the popular bike-share program have not been affected, but plans for expansion are on hold. An official with Alta Bicycle Share, which operates Capital Bikeshare, said Alta is working to regroup but was unclear when purchases might resume. Alta’s main equipment supplier, Public Bike System Co., filed for bankruptcy protection in January. Alta officials said last week that they hope a new deal will resume Alta’s relationship with the company. In the meantime, bike-share systems nationwide have reported setbacks. In Washington, equipment ordered last year has not

arrived, and orders for new stations to be installed this spring have not gone through. College Park was set to join the bike network this spring, but the city is waiting for a resolution with PBSC before it finalizes a contract with Alta, city officials said. The city and the University of Maryland plan to launch Capital Bike-

share with 10 stations. In the District, an order in February for 40 new stations and 400 new bicycles is on hold. Eight stations and 71 bikes Alexandria ordered in August have not arrived. Maryland’s Montgomery County has a back order for two stations. D.C. officials said they were counting on the new order to expand to all wards in the city. “It is already spring, and we don’t have them,” said D.C. transportation planner Jim Sebastian of the District’s new stations, many planned for downtown where demand continues to rise. “Right now, it is just up in the air.” Luz l a zo (The Washington post )

‘conversational flakes/flurries’ A paltry amount of snowfall that yields no measurable accumulation but produces high amounts of chatter about the winter that will not end. The Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang used the term in a tweet Monday to describe today’s forecast when temperatures may plummet from Monday’s 80-degree highs into the 30s after dark tonight. That could help rain turn to sleet and/or snow. Can you believe this winter? (E xpress)

D.C. Shooting Injures 4 Three men and a woman were shot early Monday in the 1500 block of 19th Street SE, according to D.C. police. Authorities said none of the injuries appeared to be life threatening. Police said two men armed with guns and wearing masks got out of a silver 2000 to 2004 Dodge Ram and opened fire on the residential street. (TWP) ANNE ARUNDEL, MD.

Shooting of Kayaker May Have Been Accidental Authorities searched an area along an Anne Arundel, Md., creek Monday where a kayaker out to watch the stars was shot and injured late Saturday, possibly by a stray bullet from a pistol. David SeafolkKopp, 56, of Reston, Va., was boating on Main Creek when he felt a sharp pain. Authorities said the bullet’s trajectory suggests it was fired from a long distance and that the shooter may not have meant to strike Seafolk-Kopp. (TWP) WASHINGTON

Is Maryland Still the Free State? Good government to some is a smothering nanny state to others Annapolis Maryland’s legislative session that concluded last week was an example of progressive government in action, leaders of its Democratic majority say, with lawmakers increasing the minimum wage, passing protections for transgender people and decriminalizing marijuana in small amounts. But this year, as in years past, there was also an undercurrent of grumbling — mostly from Republicans — that the Free State is gradually becoming less so. With a slew of attempts to micromanage people’s lives, these critics say, the state’s latest attempt to embrace the future felt more like the smothering clasp of a nanny. “Criminalizing energy drinks! … Next you’re going to have to

bottled water or low-fat milk with packaged meals such as McDonald’s Happy Meal (died in committee). She was especially incensed by a failed effort to give free breakfast and lunch for all students — regardless of family income — in public schools with high poverty levels. “I’m the big bad wolf because, you know what? — I don’t want you feeding my kids,” Szeliga said. But one person’s nanny state is another’s progressive government. State Sen. Robert Zirkin said that many a regulation that faces ridicule when first proposed is later accepted as common sense. Mandating the installation and use of seatbelts, for example. Or banning smoking in public places. In those cases, progressives embraced cutting-edge science and imposed sensible rules that most people now embrace, Zirkin said. “W hen science catches up with an issue, that’s the job of a legislature to move,” he said.

Meanwhile ... Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, D, signed legislation Monday to remove the threat of jail time for possession of small amounts of marijuana but cautioned against legalization of the drug. Under the new law, which will take effect Oct. 1, those caught with less than 10 grams of marijuana will be subject to civil fines, rather than criminal sanctions. Fifteen other states and D.C. have taken similar steps. (T WP)

check IDs at Starbucks,” said Jeff Zellmer, a lobbyist with the Maryland Retailers Association who testified against a bill that would have criminalized the sale of energy drinks to minors. The Urban Dictionary defines a nanny state as a place with an assumption that people in power know best how to protect others from the obvious consequences of their own stupid behaviors. During the 90-day session that ended last Monday, seldom a week went by that someone wasn’t uttering the phrase in Maryland’s capital. Never mind that many of the

bills died. Or that some laws once decried as nannyish are now accepted as common practice. Minority Whip Del. Kathy Szeliga ticked off a list of proposed bills that, for her, define the chivvying excesses of liberal government: A proposal to ban the Vaportini, a candle-powered device that transforms alcohol into a gas so that its user can inhale their martini instead of imbibing it (passed); a bill to prohibit the retail sale of Everclear and other highly concentrated grain alcohol (passed); legislation forbidding fast-food restaurants from serving any beverage except

A Monumental Trash Problem Washington T he Nat iona l Pa rk Ser v ice, responding to criticism of its cleanup work at the Cherry Blossom Festival, said a confluence of factors — gorgeous weather, peak blossom blooms and not being ready enough for mammoth crowds — led to the mounds of trash on the Mall this weekend. Up to 30 tons of trash, on par with Fourth of July-like tonnage, piled up, said Carol Johnson, a spokeswoman for the National Park Service, on Monday. Johnson said it was clear “in retrospect, we wish we had brought on more staff.” Robert Vogel, superintendent of the National Mall and Memorial Parks, conceded Sunday that “we did drop the ball a little bit.” Blossom-goers encountered mounds of trash more than waist

A funding dispute between Mayor Vincent Gray’s administration and a D.C. Council member is threatening to derail Wednesday’s Emancipation Day parade. The council budgeted $350,000 for this year’s commemoration of the 1862 freeing of slaves in the District — a $100,000 boost over last year’s funding. But that was not quite enough: Vincent Orange, D-At Large, wants city agencies to absorb an additional $116,000 in spending for the often sparsely attended parade, including $79,000 in police and fire department costs. Gray is balking at the extra amount, which could leave departments with less flexibility to deploy officers and firefighters this summer. MIKE DeBONIS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Their Drive? Money

Behind the Wheel A recent circumnavigation of Washington via UberX opened up a windshield view into the pleasures and pitfalls of turning the family ride into a profit center. The driver corps of UberX included an accounting student, an official at a District university, an Army Reservist, a drugstore clerk and an economist. The sample looked much like the region’s traditional corps of taxi drivers: mostly men, mostly foreign born. (T WP)

EVELYN HOCKSTEIN (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

Thousands are signing up to work for UberX and other ride-share services Washington Reagan Rucker knew she wanted to join the thousands of local motorists hauling strangers around in their cars the first time she took an UberX ride as a passenger. The single mother from Northeast Washington had been out of work three years when a friend took her to run errands using the smartphone-based ride-share service, which links people needing rides with car owners willing to give them — for a price. “I said ‘Let me try this,’ ” said Rucker, 40, who took on a $300 monthly payment for a 2009 Hyundai Elantra (to meet Uber’s requirements for late-model, four-door sedans), went through criminal-background and driving-record checks, and began her career as a driver for hire. By her third week, she’d logged 51.5 hours and cleared $1,280 after Uber’s 20 percent cut. Rucker is among the flood of local drivers flocking to join such ride-share companies as UberX, Sidecar and Lyft. An UberX spokesman said thousands of Washington-area drivers have signed up since the service launched in Septem-

Michael Belet (Silver Spring to McPherson Square, $20.60) put his Camry into service after years driving a Barwood taxi in Montgomery County, Md. He said he grew tired of paying $105 a day to rent his taxi and jumped at the chance to use his own car. Passengers and drivers rate each other using a 1-to-5 scale, and Belet — pictured above driving Nora Toiv to Alexandria last week — prides himself on keeping a high score (4.8). Part of his method: He refuses tips, asking for a “five” rating instead.

Ehsan Khan (Mount Vernon Square to Takoma Park, $21.49) was a long-haul truck driver when his father’s failing health required him to find a job closer to home. The biggest challenge for Khan has been learning to please type-A Washington passengers. One rider apologized for being a self-described (unmentionable body part) even as he insisted that Khan lay on his horn and cut off other cars in their rush to Union Station. Khan’s revenge was subtle. “I gave him one star,” he said.

Eyob Tesfa (Bethesda to Rockville, $21.72), a student at Strayer University, said that his family — including his father, a former cabbie — wasn’t happy about him picking up strangers. He allowed that gripping the wheel for hours and tapping the brakes through endless traffic can be exhausting. But with a year to go before he graduates, he’s committed. “I don’t want to be a driver; I want to be an accountant,” said the 35-year-old Silver Spring resident. “But this is something I can do while I’m studying.”

ber. Unlike Uber’s more upscale “black car” service, UberX relies on modest sedans at rates meant to be competitive with regular cab fares. City officials and taxi companies are scrambling to respond to the upstarts. The D.C. Taxicab Commission last week took up proposed new restrictions on ride-share drivers, from limiting the number of hours they can drive and increasing the amount of their liability coverage to allowing taxis to mimic Uber’s dynamic pricing model in some circumstances. Proposals under consideration by the D.C. Council would mandate higher insurance requirements, background checks and zero-tolerance drug and alcohol standards. The taxi industry, meanwhile, is trying to sow doubts about the amateurs through a “Who’s Driving You?” social-media campaign. None of that has stopped mobs of students, waiters and former cabbies from vacuuming their mats, applying the Armor All and opening the rear doors to passengers looking for new ways to get around. Flexible hours, low start-up costs and the security of cash-free transactions are attracting drivers who wouldn’t consider driving a regular taxi. Rucker never thought about becoming a cabbie. But she is fine responding to calls from pre-registered customers using the Uber smartphone app. The company handles the money, billing the passenger’s credit card on file and then paying into Rucker’s account. “I feel very safe,” Rucker said. “They have a record of everyone who gets in my car and everything that goes on.” S T E V E H E N D R I X A N D LORI AR ATANI (THE WASHINGTON POST )

How It Works

Approval Is Everything

Who’s In Charge?

The service works just like Uber’s original app-based system. A user can see how many UberX cars are in the vicinity on a dynamic map, along with an approximate response time. After someone requests a ride, the software names the driver, the type of car and an estimated arrival time.

Uber drivers and passengers use a 1-to-5 scale to rate each other at the end of every ride. Riders see a driver’s score when they call for a car; drivers can use the scale to avoid rude riders. Drivers obsess about these approval scores, some stocking bottles of water and copies of magazines, others lining rear floorboards with fancy rugs. If a driver’s rating dips below 4.7, Uber offers coaching on customer service or mastering the local road network. Novice navigators getting lost is a common complaint, according to drivers. If the ratings worsen, the company has been known to boot people from the system.

Lawmakers in cities and states across the country are struggling to get a handle on ride-share services, which are wreaking havoc on the old taxi order. The startups say they’re a new business model and should be allowed to operate without government interference. But cab companies and some government officials say the lack of oversight gives these services an unfair advantage and may pose a risk to passengers. In the District, for example, prospective cabdrivers may spend more than $600 on training, testing and licensing. Once they start working, they are required to renew their special license each year and have their vehicles inspected regularly. UberX drivers need little more than a clean driving record, a relatively new car and the smartphone that Uber issues for a $100 deposit. (TWP)

Jackson at Redskins Workouts NFL DeSean Jackson has reported for the Redskins’ voluntary offseason workout program after skipping the first week to take a vacation. The Redskins tweeted a photo of their biggest offseason acquisition working out in the weight room Monday, and the three-time Pro Bowl receiver tweeted a photo of his No. 11 jersey in his locker. Jackson wore No. 10 with the Philadelphia Eagles and had said he would try to see if franchise quarterback Robert Griffin III — the Redskins’ current No. 10 — would be willing to switch. Griffin quickly nixed the idea. Jackson signed with Washington on April 2, less than a week after getting released by the Eagles. The Redskins started their workouts the following week, but Jackson went ahead with his vacation. (AP)

Capitals general manager George McPhee met with owner Ted Leonsis and team president Dick Patrick on Monday morning and will do so again in the near future. A Daring Draft Strategy It seems quarterbacks have been largely devalued since Washington spent three first-round picks (including this year’s) and a second to move up to draft Robert Griffin III in By Rick 2012. Instead, four Snider of the top five teams drafting may wait until the second round to take a passer. And that could lead to the opening the Redskins need. Should Houston (first), Jack-

sonville (third), Cleveland (fourth) or Oakland (fifth) want to hold off on a passer, they may be willing to trade their high pick in next month’s draft. If Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater and Blake Bortles didn’t wow general managers enough to be taken over impact players like South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, Buffalo linebacker Khalil Mack and Texas A&M receiver Mike Evans, then maybe someone will be willing to trade for Washington’s early second-round selection. It only takes one team.

If Redskins general manager Bruce Allen is anything like his father — late Redskins coach George Allen, a master at trading draft picks — then Washington has a chance of moving up from its 34th overall selection to gain a valued offensive right tackle in the first round.

General manager Bruce Allen and the Redskins don’t have a 2014 first-round pick.

Why would anyone take the risk of waiting to grab a quarterback? Mostly, it’s about money. There’s a world of difference between paying a passer top five money and second-round cash. Millions of dollars can be saved, and the team could still land the quarterback it wants. It’s risky, but then the NFL draft is one big guess anyway. Washington badly needs

another anchor tackle to play on the other side of Pro Bowler Trent Williams and would love to draft Auburn offensive tackle Greg Robinson. That combination would resemble Washington’s line from a decade ago when it sported Pro Bowl left tackle Chris Samuels and solid right tackle Jon Jansen. Taking a right tackle with a top five pick is overpaying. But after recently spending $24 million for

Stratford.edu/betheceo

receiver DeSean Jackson, the Redskins have the firepower to be a top offense if Griffin has time and protection on option runs. They’ve been getting by with right tackle Tyler Polumbus for two seasons, but this is a chance to solidify the most important unit, which has been mediocre for years. Still, this won’t come cheaply. Teams will want a first-round pick in the deal and Washington doesn’t have one unless it swaps next year’s selection along with its current second rounder. In a competitive market, the deal might also require a sweetener, say backup quarterback Kirk Cousins. A cheaper fallback could be gaining Buffalo’s No. 9 pick to take Texas A&M tackle Jake Matthews. It’s a daring, possibly costly deal, but if Washington really wants to win now, it needs that offensive tackle. Rick Snider has covered Washington sports since 1978. Guinea Pig | The Night’s Wash To promote its new lavender-scented Sweet Dreams laundry collection ($4.89-$14), Procter & Gamble launched the “Tuck In, Turn Off Challenge,” which encourages Sweet Dreams users to ditch electronics right before bed. Express’ worst insomniac used all four items at once — Tide detergent, Downy fabric softener, Downy “scent boosters” and Bounce dryer sheets — AND avoided gadgets, but was not soothed. Her sheets smell pretty, though.

toughest moves, such as burpees. So the degree of difficulty is up to the students — and those trampolines. “Stuff you can do in a Pilates studio, you maybe can’t do here. Planks are so hard,” Andalynn Burgess, 34, said during class Saturday. The Capitol Hill resident hopes that return visits will boost her core strength. For Will D’Angelo, 38, who has joint problems, the most surprising thing was what he is capable of: “I’m able to run and it doesn’t hurt.”

“We didn’t tell our kids that we were coming here,” Laurie Lutz, 43, admitted as she stepped inside Flight Trampoline Park this past Saturday morning. Lutz and her Arlington neighbor Meghan Scheifele knew their tykes would be jealous to learn their moms were headed to the ultimate bounce house. So the duo just said they were working out together, which was accurate. Their game plan? Jump into a Flight Fit class, and “hope I don’t die,” joked Scheifele, 35.

TEDDY WOLFF PHOTOS (FOR EXPRESS)

What it is: Calories are always being burned at the new facility in Springfield, Va. In addition to exploring the “open jump field” of connected trampolines, Flight visitors can hop across dodgeball courts, slam balls through basketball hoops and land tricks in a foam pit. But with the Flight Fit program, trainer Jenny Mahaffey has devised ways to help students really reach their limits. “Because it’s low-impact, they don’t realize how hard their hearts are working,” says Mahaffey, whose hourlong boot camp sessions incorporate strength, cardio and playtime. (Who’s up for some Duck, Duck, Goose?)

Details

Students taking the fitness classes at Flight Trampoline Park bounce around between activities, including dodgeball, right.

Once the group is warmed up, it’s on to the “gauntlet.” That’s what Mahaffey calls the act of traversing the jump field and scrambling over several platforms along the way. Students in the Saturday morning “Weekend Warrior” class had better be prepared for extra practice: They have to complete that course repeatedly, sometimes while gripping a medicine ball. (Several other familiar gym props, including weights, resistance bands and sandbags, make regular appearances in the classes.) Almost any exercise normally done on l a nd t r a n s l at e s t o trampoline, Mahaffey says. Those lunges, mountain climbers and

fast feet just feel a little different because of the unstable surface. She packages those sorts of moves into intervals, and breaks them up with team challenges and relay races. “You don’t want it to be all hard work,” Mahaffey says.

He and his wife, Jessica, 35, were both sore and sleepy after class. “But there’s no knee pain or ankle pain,” she said.

Flight Trampoline Park (7200 Fullerton Road, Springfield, Va.; 703-663-2440, virginia .flighttrampolinepark.com) offers Flight Fit four times a week. Classes are Wednesdays and Thursdays at 6 a.m. (except this week), and Saturdays at 8 and 9 a.m. A single class is $11. Exercisers have the option of wearing sneakers or grippy socks (sold on-site for $3.50) or going barefoot.

Pushups and other boot camp moves can feel different on a trampoline.

Jump Around Exercisers can also bounce around at Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park (7175 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia; 443-546-4477, skyzone.com/columbia), which opened in September. The 31,000-square-foot facility offers SkyRobics and SkyCore classes seven times a week. “It’s way different than what people normally do [to exercise],” general manager Danny Serpico promises. A single class is $14. Sky Zone plans to open additional locations in Gaithersburg, Md., Fairfax and Baltimore.

Crowd: Couples abound, particularly at the weekend classes, which have a more social vibe, Mahaffey says. Solo students don’t need to worry about being left out, however. After a round of dodgeball, everyone feels like old friends. One tip spread quickly on Saturday: Flight has free child care for kids 6 and younger during the weekend classes. So not only do Lutz and Scheifele plan to return to class, they’ll even tell their kids about it next time. VICK Y HALLET T (E XPRESS)

is becoming toxic to your family, and could permanently damage his relationship with your son. Say that you need to come to an agreement about some concrete parameters: a date by which he’ll start looking elsewhere, or a specific plan at work to make things tolerable — almost anything, as long as it’s progress.

Work-Life Malice My husband’s boss seems to have a vendetta against him. He always came home from work miserable, but now she’s throwing assignments at him at all hours of the day, making my husband scramble even when he’s supposed to be off the clock. He’s been taking it out on our teenage son, and making our lives miserable. My husband says she might be leaving, so he wants to stay put. But he’s said this for years! HELP!

Gold Digger Alert

BEN CLAASSEN III

Your husband’s boss may (unfortunately) get to decide what is acceptable within their relationship, but you get to have at least a 50 percent say in what is acceptable within your household. I understand his inertia, but at some point the wait becomes too long. Pick a calm time to convey to him that his job

My buddy’s girlfriend is awful. She is shallow, ignorant and I think is just after him for his money. He’s a shy guy and has not had a lot of luck with women, and I’m positive he is being taken advantage of. But I don’t know how to bring it up without causing problems between us. CONCERNED ABOUT MY FRIEND

Well, it might cause problems. But good friendships sometimes need

to undergo strain if it’s in the best interest of one of the parties. But is it? Might he be able to figure this out on his own, despite his lack of experience? Plus, you don’t want it to seem like you think a woman would be interested in him only for his money. If you still feel something needs to be said, keep it gentle, and leave room for doubt. Find one good thing about her (maybe she plays the ukulele?) and go from there: “Hey — Julia is charming. She seems kind of into material stuff, though, huh?”

Your smartphone can’t exercise for you, but these gym apps make it easier to work out The most important prop for Sarah Ewing’s yoga practice? Her phone. That’s how Ewing, 30, pulls up Mindbody Connect, a free app that lets her search her go-to studios to see which have openings and who’s teaching. “Often with my work schedule I’m not sure when I can take class,” the NoMa resident says. Having the ability to reserve a spot on the fly isn’t just convenient, it’s made her much more likely to make it to the mat. Many people who’ve logged on to yoga studio or gym websites are familiar with Mindbody, a widely used online scheduling tool. As that program’s popularity grew, so did the demand for mobile, says Mindbody CEO Rick Stollmeyer. That’s how Mindbody

Connect came to be this past November. The app has been downloaded by a half million users around the world, and it can hook them up with 500,000 wellness practitioners in 100 countries. In the D.C. area alone, the app is linked to 362 gyms, salons and spas (and has about 20,000 users). “It removes a lot of friction and a lot of timeconsuming effort to plan your fitness regime,” Stollmeyer says. “The reason online preregistration for the classes makes sense is because no one wants to take the trouble of dressing in their exercise clothes and going across town only to get shut out of the class.” Users ca n a lso pay t hrough t he app, get appointment reminders and set favorites. Individual gyms are making apps, too. Many are basically mobile websites with scheduling linked to Connect, but there are increasingly more creative features being added. Here’s a sampling of what you can find for your phone. STEPHANIE KANOWITZ (FOR EXPRESS)

Pole Pressure DC

Barre3

My24

Local pole dance studio chain Pole Pressure introduced this free app for iPhone and Android in December 2012. It lets clients claim a spot in classes, reserve admission to workshops (or “twerkshops”), access its Facebook page and purchase class packages. “Really, in essence, it’s a very cleaned-up version of our website,” says owner Jessalynn Medairy. Plus, it’s more accessible, which became especially handy after several employers in the area blocked workers from accessing polepressure.com on their office computers. “If they had access from their phone, they could pull up everything they needed from our app,” Medairy says.

Its $4.99 price tag might seem steep, but this iPhone app offers access to more than just classes at the barre studio chain’s locations — including the one in Georgetown. Users can choose from a library of workouts (5 to 12 minutes each) that focus on a certain muscle group, cardio or full-body stretches. “They’re all designed to do without a ballet barre,” says Jill Warren, owner of Barre3 Georgetown, so users can experience the blend of yoga, barre and Pilates at home. There’s also a seasonal recipe database. Want a reminder that the Green Colada is made with nondairy milk, spinach, pineapple, banana and orange? With a tap, you can add all the ingredients to a shopping list you can refer to at the grocery store.

24 Hour Fitness, a national big-box gym chain with three locations in the D.C. region (Vienna, Falls Church and Annapolis), has a free app for Android, iPhone or iPad with features even nonmembers can use. There are a bunch of fitness calculators (calorie burn, metabolic rate, body mass index and more), age-based exercise guidelines and short videos with training tips. Members can also track how many times they’ve worked out. About a quarter of the gym’s 3.8 million members use the app, says director of marketing Kevin Young. “We want people to think of 24 Hour Fitness not just while they’re at the gym, but throughout the day, and so interacting with our app helps that brand relationship when they’re outside of the club,” he says.

nutrition fit

Who hasn’t craved something sweet or fried while stressed-out? The problem is, many “comfort foods” promote indigestion, bloating, nausea and poor cognitive function and can leave you feeling unsatisfied and hungry for more. And those are just the short-term effects! Sadly, no foods can completely cure a bad day, but some can help. Strawberries, Oranges and Mangoes: Vitamin C has been shown to decrease depressive symptoms by helping your body stop the buildup of free radicals and recover faster from stress. So start your day off with a good source of the powerful antioxidant — and maybe a dollop of Greek yogurt.

Walnuts and Pumpkin Seeds: Time for a mid-morning snack? Grab a handful of one of these smart choices. Both are loaded with omega-3, which has been shown to improve mood and feelings of self-worth. That means these babies will satisfy your hunger and ward off feelings of doom and gloom. Celery: Research has shown that celery contains a chemical (3-n-butylphthalide) that lowers the concentration of stress hormones in the blood, ultimately causing your body to stress less. Barley: If you’re craving something hearty, don’t go for that bowl of mac and cheese. Instead, eat barley and vegetables. Barley is a complex carbohydrate, which helps stimulate your brain to release serotonin, the “feel-good” hormone. These carbs will do more for your body than that cheese-covered pasta. In a medium bowl, whisk the egg yolks with a hefty pinch of salt, several grinds of pepper and the lemon zest, until the mixture is fluffy, about 4 minutes. In a separate bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the egg whites with a pinch of salt until they hold soft peaks; stir ¼ of the whites into the egg yolks, then fold the remaining

whites into the yolks gently, just until they are incorporated. In a 10-inch nonstick skillet with an oven-safe handle over medium, heat the remaining ½ tablespoon of oil. Pour the egg mixture into the skillet, gently spread it evenly. Place the skillet in the oven on the middle shelf and bake until it is puffed and almost cooked through, about 3 minutes. Meanwhile, reheat the spinach mixture over medium heat, stirring. Remove the omelet from the oven and make an indent down the center with a spatula. Spoon the spinach mixture over half of the omelet, then use the spatula to fold the other half of the omelet over to cover the filling. Return the omelet to the oven and bake for another 2 to 3 minutes. Divide the omelet in half, sprinkle each half with the dill and serve right away. The novel is currently in its 24th consecutive week on the New York Times Best Seller list, and now holds fifth place. Brad Pitt to Produce General McChrystal Film Brad Pitt will produce a film about General Stanley McChrystal, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “The Operators” will detail McChrystal’s rise and fall following his controversial 2010 interview in Rolling Stone. Pitt may also star as McChrystal. (E XPRESS)

“I have no desire to watch myself as James Bond. ’Cause it’s just never good enough. It’s a horrible feeling.” — PIERCE BROSN A N, TELLING THE TELEGRAPH HE THINKS HIS PORTRAYAL OF THE FICTIONAL M16 AGENT BETWEEN 1995 AND 2002 WAS “TAME”

You Betcha It’s Good FX brings the accents and violence of the Coen Brothers’ ‘Fargo’ to the small screen

“I liked the idea of playing a guy who has no conscience … Messing with people is actually his social life.”

Thornton explains. “It was done by a friend. But looking in the mirror, I thought, ‘Wow — this dark character having bangs, which you associate with innocence, would be great.’ So we decided to go with it.” The man bringing “Fargo” back to life after ill-fated tries by NBC and CBS in the late 1990s is Noah Hawley, who serves as the show runner, an executive producer and the writer of all 10 episodes. Somehow Hawley internalized the rules and deadpan tone of the Coens (who are also onboard as executive producers), then ran with their sense of twisted realism to create his own thing. “He captured the Coen Brothers’ spirit, got their vibe, and yet he didn’t imitate ’em,” Thornton says. “I thought, if you’ve done that, you’ve done something great.” Thornton has less f lattering things to say about his character. “[Lorne] doesn’t like weakness,” he says. “He has this weird curiosity about weak people. And he sees them as people he can use.” Having drawn Freeman’s character into his lair, Lorne shares his code on being tough: “We used to be gorillas. All we have is what we can take and defend.” “The most important thing for an actor to know is who he is,” Thornton says. “He’s got to know, ‘OK, I’m the guy for this role — or not.’ People will say, ‘Well, you need to stretch yourself as an actor.’ But if you start trying to play people who are inherently not you, that’s not going to be your strongest stuff.”

— BILLY BOB THORNTON, WHO PLAYS LORNE MALVO IN FX’S NEW SERIES “FARGO”

FR A ZIER MOORE (AP)

Television After failed attempts and broken dreams, by golly, someone went and put “Fargo” on series TV. The 10-episode season premieres at 10 p.m. today on FX. And it mesmerizes. As a furtherance of the 1996 crime classic by Joel and Ethan Coen that starred Frances McDormand, William H. Macy and Steve Buscemi, the TV adaptation is a wonder. Like that film, the series is set in rural, snow-glazed Minnesota, but 20 years later (in 2006), and is stocked with new characters, deadly mischief and a bounty of stars including Allison Tolman as a bright-eyed deputy and Martin Freeman as a nebbishy insurance salesman (distant echoes of the roles played by McDormand and Macy in the film). Also on hand are Colin Hanks, Bob Odenkirk, Oliver Platt, Kate Walsh, Keith Carradine, Adam Goldberg, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, and more. At the core of its deliciously deranged narrative is Lorne Malvo, a sotto-voce psycho whose mysterious path brings him to the town of Bemidji, with many repercussions. Lorne is played by Billy Bob Thornton, who radiates still menace while sporting what he calls “a haircut gone wrong.” “This was not from a salon,”

Rob Lowe details his reasons to ‘Love Life’ Book Review The title of Rob Lowe’s new book is a bit of a tease. “Love Life” isn’t a noun; it’s a command. Lowe aims to inspire readers to take chances — and appreciate what they have. Part self-help, part Acting 101, part-memoir, the book is a reflection of Lowe’s layered life. He skillfully weaves stories together with common themes and a philosophical perspective. “Love Life” is catnip for pop culture addicts. A contender in movies, TV and politics, Lowe meets Prince William and Kate, exchang-

es notes with former President Bill Clinton and pals around with scores of A-list celebrities. But instead of just name-dropping, he has a way of making the reader feel like he sneaked us in his shirt pocket and took us along for the ride. As he stares at Warren Beatty’s Oscar at the legend’s home or turns down Madonna for a dance at the Palladium, he’s looking over at us and whispering, “Can you believe this?!” He manages to make being Rob Lowe somehow seem normal.

“Love Life” is also a love letter to his family. Lowe writes adoringly about his wife of 23 years, Sheryl, and credits her with getting him through some of the darkest moments, including his 1990 stint in rehab for alcohol abuse. He writes beautifully about the pain of letting go of his two children and his pride in his accomplished son getting a chance at the college experience that Lowe never had. Critics may say the book is preachy. But Lowe’s candor and willingness to admit his f laws create an authentic voice. His easy writing style will hook readers who won’t judge his book by the handsome man on its cover. BROOKE LEFFERTS (AP)
