One Year Later, Boston’s Healing Marathon bombings shook city, but many say it’s now stronger

Every time Roseann Sdoia comes home, she must climb 18 steps — six stairs into the building, 12 more to her apartment. It is an old building in Boston’s North End, with doors that are big and heavy, not an easy place for an amputee to live. When she left the hospital, a month after the Boston Marathon bombings, she had a choice: She could find another place to live, one more suitable for someone who wears a prosthetic leg. Or, she could stay. “Early on when all this happened, so many people were telling me to move out of the city and move out of my apartment because of the stairs,” she said. “But I have been able to get past all of that.” In that, she mirrors Boston itself. In the course of a year, limbs have been replaced, psyches soothed, the wounds sustained in

Rapid Bikeshare Expansion Slows New local stations on hold as maker of the red bikes goes bust Washington After three years of rapid growth, Washington’s acclaimed bike-share program is coming to a standstill — at least temporarily. Capital Bikeshare’s expansion to College Park, Md., is stalled and new stations planned in the District and Alexandria are delayed, officials say. The reason? The bike network has been unable to purchase new bikes and docking stations since the system’s sole bike equipment pro-

vider’s bankruptcy filing. Day-to-day operations of the popular bike-share program have not been affected, but plans for expansion are on hold. An official with Alta Bicycle Share, which operates Capital Bikeshare, said Alta is working to regroup but was unclear when purchases might resume. Alta’s main equipment supplier, Public Bike System Co., filed for bankruptcy protection in January. Alta officials said last week that they hope a new deal will resume Alta’s relationship with the company. In the meantime, bike-share systems nationwide have reported setbacks. Is Maryland Still the Free State? Good government to some is a smothering nanny state to others Annapolis Maryland’s legislative session that concluded last week was an example of progressive government in action, leaders of its Democratic majority say, with lawmakers increasing the minimum wage, passing protections for transgender people and decriminalizing marijuana in small amounts. But this year, as in years past, there was also an undercurrent of grumbling — mostly from Republicans — that the Free State is gradually becoming less so. With a slew of attempts to micromanage people’s lives, these critics say, the state’s latest attempt to embrace the future felt more like the smothering clasp of a nanny. “Criminalizing energy drinks! … Next you’re going to have to

Thousands are signing up to work for UberX and other ride-share services Washington Reagan Rucker knew she wanted to join the thousands of local motorists hauling strangers around in their cars the first time she took an UberX ride as a passenger. The single mother from Northeast Washington had been out of work three years when a friend took her to run errands using the smartphone-based ride-share service, which links people needing rides with car owners willing to give them — for a price. “I said ‘Let me try this,’ ” said Rucker, 40, who took on a $300 monthly payment for a 2009 Hyundai Elantra (to meet Uber’s requirements for late-model, four-door sedans), went through criminal-background and driving-record checks, and began her career as a driver for hire. By her third week, she’d logged 51.5 hours and cleared $1,280 after Uber’s 20 percent cut. Rucker is among the flood of local drivers flocking to join such ride-share companies as UberX, Sidecar and Lyft. An UberX spokesman said thousands of Washington-area drivers have signed up since the service launched in Septem-

Uber drivers and passengers use a 1-to-5 scale to rate each other at the end of every ride. Riders see a driver’s score when they call for a car; drivers can use the scale to avoid rude riders. Drivers obsess about these approval scores, some stocking bottles of water and copies of magazines, others lining rear floorboards with fancy rugs. If a driver’s rating dips below 4.7, Uber offers coaching on customer service or mastering the local road network. Novice navigators getting lost is a common complaint, according to drivers. If the ratings worsen, the company has been known to boot people from the system.

Lawmakers in cities and states across the country are struggling to get a handle on ride-share services, which are wreaking havoc on the old taxi order. Jackson at Redskins Workouts NFL DeSean Jackson has reported for the Redskins’ voluntary offseason workout program after skipping the first week to take a vacation. The Redskins tweeted a photo of their biggest offseason acquisition working out in the weight room Monday, and the three-time Pro Bowl receiver tweeted a photo of his No. 11 jersey in his locker. Jackson wore No. 10 with the Philadelphia Eagles and had said he would try to see if franchise quarterback Robert Griffin III — the Redskins’ current No. 10 — would be willing to switch. Griffin quickly nixed the idea. Jackson signed with Washington on April 2, less than a week after getting released by the Eagles. The Redskins started their workouts the following week, but Jackson went ahead with his vacation. (AP)

Capitals Sweeping changes could be in store for the Capitals after they ended their season without a playoff appearance for the ﬁrst time since 2007. Capitals general manager George McPhee met with owner Ted Leonsis and team president Dick Patrick on Monday morning and will do so again in the near future. Until that point, McPhee’s status is uncertain as Washington prepares for a long offseason. McPhee has been the franchise’s chief a rchitect since June 1997, making him the thirdlongest tenured general manager in the NHL. During his 17 years as general manager, McPhee, who is believed to be on the ﬁnal year of his contract, has overseen a complete rebuild which returned the Capitals to respectability. Why would anyone take the risk of waiting to grab a quarterback? Mostly, it’s about money. There’s a world of difference between paying a passer top ﬁve money and second-round cash. Millions of dollars can be saved, and the team could still land the quarterback it wants. It’s risky, but then the NFL draft is one big guess anyway. Washington badly needs

another anchor tackle to play on the other side of Pro Bowler Trent Williams and would love to draft Auburn offensive tackle Greg Robinson. That combination would resemble Washington’s line from a decade ago when it sported Pro Bowl left tackle Chris Samuels and solid right tackle Jon Jansen. Taking a right tackle with a top ﬁve pick is overpaying. But after recently spending $24 million for

receiver DeSean Jackson, the Redskins have the firepower to be a top offense if Griffin has time and protection on option runs. They’ve been getting by with right tackle Tyler Polumbus for two seasons, but this is a chance to solidify the most important unit, which has been mediocre for years. Still, this won’t come cheaply. Teams will want a first-round pick in the deal and Washington doesn’t have one unless it swaps next year’s selection along with its current second rounder. In a competitive market, the deal might also require a sweetener, say backup quarterback Kirk Cousins. A cheaper fallback could be gaining Buffalo’s No. 9 pick to take Texas A&M tackle Jake Matthews. In addition to exploring the “open jump field” of connected trampolines, Flight visitors can hop across dodgeball courts, slam balls through basketball hoops and land tricks in a foam pit. But with the Flight Fit program, trainer Jenny Mahaffey has devised ways to help students really reach their limits. “Because it’s low-impact, they don’t realize how hard their hearts are working,” says Mahaffey, whose hourlong boot camp sessions incorporate strength, cardio and playtime. Once the group is warmed up, it’s on to the “gauntlet.” That’s what Mahaffey calls the act of traversing the jump field and scrambling over several platforms along the way. Students in the Saturday morning “Weekend Warrior” class had better be prepared for extra practice: They have to complete that course repeatedly, sometimes while gripping a medicine ball. (Several other familiar gym props, including weights, resistance bands and sandbags, make regular appearances in the classes.) Crowd: Couples abound, particularly at the weekend classes, which have a more social vibe, Mahaffey says. Solo students don’t need to worry about being left out, however. After a round of dodgeball, everyone feels like old friends. One tip spread quickly on Saturday: Flight has free child care for kids 6 and younger during the weekend classes. Your smartphone can’t exercise for you, but these gym apps make it easier to work out The most important prop for Sarah Ewing’s yoga practice? Her phone. That’s how Ewing, 30, pulls up Mindbody Connect, a free app that lets her search her go-to studios to see which have openings and who’s teaching. “Often with my work schedule I’m not sure when I can take class,” the NoMa resident says. Having the ability to reserve a spot on the ﬂy isn’t just convenient, it’s made her much more likely to make it to the mat. Many people who’ve logged on to yoga studio or gym websites are familiar with Mindbody, a widely used online scheduling tool. As that program’s popularity grew, so did the demand for mobile, says Mindbody CEO Rick Stollmeyer. That’s how Mindbody

Connect came to be this past November. The app has been downloaded by a half million users around the world, and it can hook them up with 500,000 wellness practitioners in 100 countries. In the D.C. area alone, the app is linked to 362 gyms, salons and spas (and has about 20,000 users). “It removes a lot of friction and a lot of timeconsuming effort to plan your fitness regime,” Stollmeyer says. “The reason online preregistration for the classes makes sense is because no one wants to take the trouble of dressing in their exercise clothes and going across town only to get shut out of the class.” Users ca n a lso pay t hrough t he app, get appointment reminders and set favorites. Individual gyms are making apps, too. Many are basically mobile websites with scheduling linked to Connect, but there are increasingly more creative features being added. Local pole dance studio chain Pole Pressure introduced this free app for iPhone and Android in December 2012. It lets clients claim a spot in classes, reserve admission to workshops (or “twerkshops”), access its Facebook page and purchase class packages. “Really, in essence, it’s a very cleaned-up version of our website,” says owner Jessalynn Medairy. Plus, it’s more accessible, which became especially handy after several employers in the area blocked workers from accessing polepressure.com on their office computers. “If they had access from their phone, they could pull up everything they needed from our app,” Medairy says.

Its $4.99 price tag might seem steep, but this iPhone app offers access to more than just classes at the barre studio chain’s locations — including the one in Georgetown. Users can choose from a library of workouts (5 to 12 minutes each) that focus on a certain muscle group, cardio or full-body stretches. “They’re all designed to do without a ballet barre,” says Jill Warren, owner of Barre3 Georgetown, so users can experience the blend of yoga, barre and Pilates at home. There’s also a seasonal recipe database. Want a reminder that the Green Colada is made with nondairy milk, spinach, pineapple, banana and orange? With a tap, you can add all the ingredients to a shopping list you can refer to at the grocery store.

24 Hour Fitness, a national big-box gym chain with three locations in the D.C. region (Vienna, Falls Church and Annapolis), has a free app for Android, iPhone or iPad with features even nonmembers can use. There are a bunch of fitness calculators (calorie burn, metabolic rate, body mass index and more), age-based exercise guidelines and short videos with training tips. Members can also track how many times they’ve worked out. About a quarter of the gym’s 3.8 million members use the app, says director of marketing Kevin Young. “We want people to think of 24 Hour Fitness not just while they’re at the gym, but throughout the day, and so interacting with our app helps that brand relationship when they’re outside of the club,” he says.

In a medium bowl, whisk the egg yolks with a hefty pinch of salt, several grinds of pepper and the lemon zest, until the mixture is fluffy, about 4 minutes. In a separate bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the egg whites with a pinch of salt until they hold soft peaks; stir ¼ of the whites into the egg yolks, then fold the remaining

whites into the yolks gently, just until they are incorporated. In a 10-inch nonstick skillet with an oven-safe handle over medium, heat the remaining ½ tablespoon of oil. Pour the egg mixture into the skillet, gently spread it evenly. Place the skillet in the oven on the middle shelf and bake until it is puffed and almost cooked through, about 3 minutes. Meanwhile, reheat the spinach mixture over medium heat, stirring. Remove the omelet from the oven and make an indent down the center with a spatula. Spoon the spinach mixture over half of the omelet, then use the spatula to fold the other half of the omelet over to cover the filling. Return the omelet to the oven and bake for another 2 to 3 minutes. Divide the omelet in half, sprinkle each half with the dill and serve right away. “I liked the idea of playing a guy who has no conscience … Messing with people is actually his social life.”

Thornton explains. “It was done by a friend. But looking in the mirror, I thought, ‘Wow — this dark character having bangs, which you associate with innocence, would be great.’ So we decided to go with it.” The man bringing “Fargo” back to life after ill-fated tries by NBC and CBS in the late 1990s is Noah Hawley, who serves as the show runner, an executive producer and the writer of all 10 episodes. Somehow Hawley internalized the rules and deadpan tone of the Coens (who are also onboard as executive producers), then ran with their sense of twisted realism to create his own thing. “He captured the Coen Brothers’ spirit, got their vibe, and yet he didn’t imitate ’em,” Thornton says. “I thought, if you’ve done that, you’ve done something great.” Thornton has less f lattering things to say about his character. “[Lorne] doesn’t like weakness,” he says. “He has this weird curiosity about weak people. And he sees them as people he can use.” Having drawn Freeman’s character into his lair, Lorne shares his code on being tough: “We used to be gorillas. All we have is what we can take and defend.” “The most important thing for an actor to know is who he is,” Thornton says. “He’s got to know, ‘OK, I’m the guy for this role — or not.’ People will say, ‘Well, you need to stretch yourself as an actor.’ But if you start trying to play people who are inherently not you, that’s not going to be your strongest stuff.”

Television After failed attempts and broken dreams, by golly, someone went and put “Fargo” on series TV. The 10-episode season premieres at 10 p.m. today on FX. And it mesmerizes. As a furtherance of the 1996 crime classic by Joel and Ethan Coen that starred Frances McDormand, William H. Macy and Steve Buscemi, the TV adaptation is a wonder. Like that ﬁlm, the series is set in rural, snow-glazed Minnesota, but 20 years later (in 2006), and is stocked with new characters, deadly mischief and a bounty of stars including Allison Tolman as a bright-eyed deputy and Martin Freeman as a nebbishy insurance salesman (distant echoes of the roles played by McDormand and Macy in the ﬁlm). Also on hand are Colin Hanks, Bob Odenkirk, Oliver Platt, Kate Walsh, Keith Carradine, Adam Goldberg, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, and more. At the core of its deliciously deranged narrative is Lorne Malvo, a sotto-voce psycho whose mysterious path brings him to the town of Bemidji, with many repercussions. Lorne is played by Billy Bob Thornton, who radiates still menace while sporting what he calls “a haircut gone wrong.” “This was not from a salon,”

Rob Lowe details his reasons to ‘Love Life’ Book Review The title of Rob Lowe’s new book is a bit of a tease. “Love Life” isn’t a noun; it’s a command. Lowe aims to inspire readers to take chances — and appreciate what they have. Part self-help, part Acting 101, part-memoir, the book is a reflection of Lowe’s layered life. He skillfully weaves stories together with common themes and a philosophical perspective. “Love Life” is catnip for pop culture addicts. A contender in movies, TV and politics, Lowe meets Prince William and Kate, exchang-

es notes with former President Bill Clinton and pals around with scores of A-list celebrities. But instead of just name-dropping, he has a way of making the reader feel like he sneaked us in his shirt pocket and took us along for the ride. As he stares at Warren Beatty’s Oscar at the legend’s home or turns down Madonna for a dance at the Palladium, he’s looking over at us and whispering, “Can you believe this?!” He manages to make being Rob Lowe somehow seem normal.

“Love Life” is also a love letter to his family. Lowe writes adoringly about his wife of 23 years, Sheryl, and credits her with getting him through some of the darkest moments, including his 1990 stint in rehab for alcohol abuse. He writes beautifully about the pain of letting go of his two children and his pride in his accomplished son getting a chance at the college experience that Lowe never had. Critics may say the book is preachy. But Lowe’s candor and willingness to admit his f laws create an authentic voice.
