Newsman Mike Wallace Dies at 93 Syrian President Bashar Assad has agreed to abide by a U.N.-backed peace plan deadline by withdrawing tanks and troops from cities by Tuesday and ceasing fire by Thursday.

')*j^ ;Wij[h ;]] Hebb The first family will welcome more than 35,000 people to the South Lawn on Monday for the 134th annual White House Easter Egg Roll. This year’s theme is “Let’s Go, Let’s Play, Let’s Move.”

CWdied Kf <eh FWheb[ Charles Manson is scheduled for his 12th parole hearing Wednesday. He is serving a life sentence for the killings of nine people, including the 1969 death of actress Sharon Tate.

J_c[b_d[ 1940s: Wallace begins his news career as radio news writer for the Chicago Sun.

D[m Oeha “Mike Wallace is here to see you.” The “60 Minutes” newsman had such a fearsome reputation that it was often said that those were the most dreaded words in the English language, capable of reducing an interview subject to a shaking, sweating mess. Wallace, who won his 21st and final Emmy Award at 89, died Saturday in the New Canaan, Conn., care facility where he had lived the last few years of his life. He was 93. Wallace didn’t just interview people. He cross-examined them. Sometimes he eviscerated them pitilessly. His weapons were many: thorough research, a cocked eyebrow, a skeptical “Come on” and a question so direct it took your breath away. Wallace made “60 Minutes” compulsively watchable, television’s first newsmagazine that became appointment viewing on Sunday nights. His last interview aired January 2008. Slowed by a triple bypass later that month and the ravages

of time on a once-sharp mind, he retired from public life. Wallace called his 1984 book, written with Gary Paul Gates, “Close Encounters.” He described it as “one mostly lucky man’s encounters with growing up professionally.” In 2005, he brought out his memoir, “Between You and Me.” Wallace was born Myron Wallace on May 9, 1918, in Brookline, Mass. He began his news career in Chicago in the 1940s, first as a radio news writer for the Chicago Sun and then as a reporter for WMAQ. He started at CBS in 1951. He was married four times. In 1986, he wed Mary Yates Wallace, the widow of his close friend and colleague Ted Yates, who had died in 1967. Besides his wife, Wallace is survived by his son, Chris, a stepdaughter, Pauline Dora, and stepson Eames Yates. FR A ZIER MOORE (AP)

1950s: “Night Beat,” a series of one-on-one interviews that first brought Wallace recognition for his style of questioning, begins airing on a local New York station. It later airs on ABC. 1963: Wallace becomes a full-time newsman for CBS. 1999: “The Insider,” a film based in part on a 1995 “60 Minutes” story about tobacco industry whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand, premieres. Christopher Plummer stars as Wallace, who was unhappy with the film, in which he was portrayed as caving to pressure to kill a story about Wigand. 2006: Wallace retires as a regular correspondent for the show. 2008: “60 Minutes” airs Wallace’s last interview, with Roger Clemens on his alleged steroid use.

Metro staff members plan to present new budget numbers to the transit authority’s board of directors during a finance committee meeting Thursday. “Riders may see less-thanexpected fare increases,” said Bill Greene, managing director of Metro’s Office of Management and Budget. Metro officials said the agency faces a $103 million operating budget deficit. They said the deficit reduction came from $7 million in cost cuts, including using a $2 million surplus from fiscal 2011 to add bus service in Northern Virginia.

Other savings include $3 million in the contract for MetroAccess, the door-to-door service for the disabled, and the rest in reducing consulting contracts for engineering services, officials said. Dan Stessel, chief spokesman for Metro, said the “actual cost to operate [MetroAccess] is projected to come in less than budgeted in 2012.”

Metro needs riders with disabilities and people 65 and older to serve on its Accessibility Advisory Committee. The 20-member committee has six members each from Maryland,

Overheated 2012’s oddly warm start unleashes record temperatures across the U.S. MWi^_d]jed It’s been so warm in the United States this year, especially in March, that national records weren’t just broken, they were deep-fried. Temperatures in the lower 48 states were 8.6 degrees above normal for March and 6 degrees higher than average for the first three months of the year, according to calculations by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. That far exceeds the old records. The magnitude of how unusual the year has been in the U.S. has alarmed some meteorologists who have warned of global warming. “Everybody has this uneasy feeling. This is weird. This is not good,” said Jerry Meehl, a scientist at the

National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. It’s not just March. “It’s been ongoing for several months,” said Jake Crouch of NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Ashville, N.C. Meteorologists say an unusual confluence of several weather patterns, including La Nina, was the direct cause of the warm start to 2012. While individual events can’t be blamed on global warming, Crouch said this is like the extremes that are supposed to get more frequent due to man-made climate change.

It’s important to note that this unusual winter heat is mostly a North America phenomenon. Much of the rest of the Northern Hemisphere has been cold, said NOAA meteorologist Martin Hoerling. The first quarter of 2012 broke the January-March record by 1.4 degrees. Usually records are broken by just one- or two-tenths of a degree.

The atypical heat goes back even further. Since last April, it’s been the hottest 12-month stretch on record, Crouch said. NOAA scientist Gabriel Vecchi compared the increase in weather extremes to baseball players on steroids: You can’t say an individual homer is due to steroids, but they are hit more often and the long-held records for home runs fall. They seem to be falling far more often due to global warming, said top NASA climate scientist James Hansen, who authored a paper showing that heat extremes are happening far more often than scientists thought. What was a 1-in-400 hot temperature record is now a 1-in-10 occurrence, essentially 40 times more likely, said Hansen. SETH BORENSTEIN (AP)

A few seasons ago the Capitals management and fans raved about how deep their goaltending pool was. Today that pool has dried up as the Capitals will likely rely on Braden Holtby – who has only 21 NHL games of experience – to man the pipes in the opening round. Injuries to the team’s stock of No. 1 goalies, Tomas Vokoun and Michal Neuvirth, thrust Holtby into the starting role, and although he’s played the part well down the stretch to help the Caps reach the playoffs, there are concerns. Holtby will be facing off against Tim Thomas, the veteran netminder who led the Bruins to a Stanley Cup victory last spring.

Capitals’ Concerns

These 3 matchups could make the difference in the series vs. the Bruins <eh j^[ \_hij j_c[ _d \ekh o[Whi" the Capitals aren’t the Southeast Division champions, but considering the team’s current playoff position, that might be just fine with them. Washington clinched the Eastern Conference’s seventh seed on Saturday night and will face the defending Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins in a series starting on Thursday. The Caps went 3-1 in the season series with the Bruins and scored a total of 13 goals in those games. But it wouldn’t be a playoff series without story lines that could potentially nullify any regular season success the Caps had. Washington enters its first playoffs without Bruce Boudreau behind the bench, and the Caps will also be relying on a potentially thin goaltending stock as injuries to Tomas Vokoun and Michal Neuvirth have put Braden Holtby in the starting job. Here’s a few of the key matchups that will determine who advances to Round 2. REED S. ALBERS (FOR E X PRES S) NO. 2 BOSTON VS. NO. 7 WASHINGTON

:Wb[ >kdj[h li$ 9bWkZ[ @kb_[d One of the biggest criticisms of former Caps coach Bruce Boudreau was his failure to make the proper adjustments needed to win in the postseason. Now, it’s Hunter’s chance to prove the playoffs will be different under his watch. But concerns remain because despite the coaching change, the Capitals have — at times — looked similar to Boudreau’s Caps. Hunter’s 2005 Memorial Cup victory with the Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights pales in comparison to the accomplishments of Boston’s Julien, who last year guided the Bruins to their first Stanley Cup championship since 1972.

It’s no secret that Ovechkin hates playing against the Bruins’ 6-foot9 defenseman. Zdeno Chara’s towering figure and his physical defensive style are reasons why Ovechkin went goalless in three games against the Bruins this year. Yet in past playoff series, defensive matchups that were supposed to stymie Ovechkin have failed to do so. Washington’s past four postseasons have seen Ovechkin score at least four goals in each series, and the Great 8 has 50 playoff points in 37 games. History suggests Ovechkin will rise to the occasion.

The starting point is trying to determine with your team what do you want to be the best at and how you want to differentiate yourself in the marketplace. The second step is to get a strategy together that allows you to achieve that vision. The next step is to get an organizational structure in place that allows you to organize your most important assets — your people, your human resources, intellectual capital — so you can execute the strategy. Once you decide on the organization, you need to recruit the right leaders to actually run that organization. Then you need to get your compensation systems, measurement system and management system to monitor the progress that you make and then make adjustments as you go along. I have used that basic formula for 15 years. To a large extent, that’s the process I am beginning here at CSC.

MIKE LAWRIE CHOSE his career path in an unusual way. He asked himself two important questions: Which industry will create the most wealth? What is the most successful company in that industry? He quickly concluded the industry was information technology and the company was IBM. He went on to spend 27 years working there, developing a turnaround expertise that he carried to other companies before arriving at CSC.

You were chief executive at Siebel Systems. What would you have done differently?

I would have tried to get more conviction and buy-in from the board as to what needed to be accomplished and the threats to the existing business model. I don’t think I did a good job in clearly articulating that. I also think I was slower than I should’ve been in bringing a team in that could execute against that changing business model. You are known for improving client satisfac-

tion at Misys. How did you do it?

The first thing we did was ask our customers how we were doing. Up until that point we had never done that. I hired a third-party firm to do that. It turned out we were not doing very well. It wasn’t hard to see the four or five things that we needed to improve on. So we put a game plan in place. We listened and acted. In a turnaround situation, what is the best way to hire the right leadership?

The more difficult part is identifying someone’s values ... If you don’t get the right values in senior executives, you won’t be able to get the right values in the corporation and that will impede your ability to be a highly successful enterprise. VANESSA SMALL (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Instead, he tends to trails and interpretive gardens, puts together exhibits about energy and ecology, and teaches people of all ages about the flora and fauna of Northern Virginia. “I wanted to be in a place where I could not only be outside a lot but also help get the word out about all of this knowledge,” says Ogle, 51, who holds a master’s in wildlife biology from Virginia Tech. That led him to the field of interpretive

education and his position as chief naturalist with the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority. For some people, Ogle’s business day sounds a lot more appealing than sitting at a desk from 9 to 5. If you’d rather punch the clock in the great outdoors, enrolling in a graduate-degree program in the areas of environmental management or leadership might help you get your feet wet. Literally. “Once a week, our students are in the creek, taking samples to then analyze in the lab,” says Tolessa Deksissa, director of the professional science master’s program (PSM)

In the fall, American University will introduce a different kind of environmental degree program: an M.S. in sustainability management through its Kogod School of Business (American.edu/kogod). The interdisciplinary degree program trains students to help drive an organization’s environmental programs and policies. “Our students will be studying science, business and public policy and hopefully combining all three to be well-rounded sustainability officers,” says Daniel Jacobs, the program’s director. There are a lot of different ways to get outside if you know what it is you like.” Sophie Gerard, 33, has known where her interests lie from a young age. As a child, she could often be found in a pair of river boots, standing in a stream and looking for crayfish. Her parents helped

develop her inquisitive nature and passion for the outdoors, and now she inspires that same sense of wonder as an ecological educator at the Nature Preschool at the Irvine Nature Center in Owings Mills, Md. “I realized that I could make a career out of this, of helping others see what’s around us,” says Gerard, who holds a master’s in ecological teaching from Lesley University in Massachusetts. Gerard spends a good chunk of time each day outdoors with her students, searching for animal tracks, examining acorns or simply listening to the sounds of nature. “There are so many things out there that we walk by every day and never have the chance to take a second look at,” she says. “My graduate degree has really helped me to focus on the whole, on all the interconnections and patterns we see throughout everything we do. What are employers looking for when they pick up a résumé?

The first thing that an employer looks at on a résumé is an impression as to who the person is: Who is this? Where have they been? What have they been doing? It’s like meeting somebody for the first time, looking at how they’re dressed, their face, and making a quick judgment. Continued on page E6

What’s the No. 1 mistake people make in writing a résumé?

ANDREW H. WALKER

Quentin Schultze knows how to get you a job — no matter what. Education level and even past jobs aren’t make-or-break, says the communication professor at Calvin College in Michigan. In “Résumé 101: A Student and Recent-Grad Guide to Crafting Résumés and Cover Letters That Land Jobs” ($12.99, Ten Speed Press), Schultze explains how highlighting your life experience can make you more marketable. The book includes forms to help you figure out your best features, lists of positive words to use and samples of good writing.

If you don’t have much paid experience, what do you include?

ferent things. And of course this is all transferrable to all kinds of different jobs.

Author Quentin Schultze says résumés shouldn’t be just a list of past jobs.

People wrongly assume that a résumé should be a list of places that they’ve had paid employment. A résumé should reflect instead a person’s life experiences in three areas: their skills — what they can do with their knowledge — what they know about and their personal traits.

W^[WZ Résumé Reinvention Continued from page E5

Can you help them focus?

Direct the employer to a specific spot on the résumé by using a summary statement at the top instead of an objective statement. This is one of the hottest things in résumé writing now. An objective statement says this is what you want from an organization. A summary statement at the top says this is what you offer the organization. What can you do appearance-wise to make your résumé stand out?

This business of using fancy forms, templates to make your résumé look good is a total waste of time. In fact, it gives the opposite impression. It gives the impression that all you’re selling is sizzle, no substance. You want a very businesslike résumé. A résumé doesn’t have to be dry, right? Can you make it your own?

A résumé is inherently subjective. It’s a person talking about themselves to other people. You want the items to be factual, but they have to be expressed subjectively, especially when it comes to the

verbs that are used. I recommend that every bullet point start with an active verb. Why do you tell readers to think of writing a résumé as writing your life story?

The reason I use that term was to be able to make it clear up-front that we all have life experiences that are valuable for work, and those life experiences may not have been paid employment. Most stress for people writing résumés is in feeling that they don’t have enough quality material. STEPHANIE KANOWITZ (FOR E XPRESS)

Reader: I was thinking about wearing a wedding ring to my next job interview in order to appear less as a loser and more as a connected adult who can maintain long-term relationships. I am 51 and have never been married or in a relationship of any kind. What are your thoughts on this? Is it an expected or reasonable part of a job interview to respond to statements like, “Oh, I see you are married. ...” Then, I would be caught in an awkward situation.

Let’s not soft-pedal it: You would be caught in a blatant deception. Fortunately, prudent employers steer clear of questions about marital status, so it’s unlikely you would be busted during the interview. And unless you’re auditioning for “The Bachelor,” I sincerely doubt the hiring decision would hinge on whether you’re hitched. Even if it did, the door could swing either way. W hile one manager might see married people as more stable and mature — cue collective snort from anyone familiar with the institution — another might assume their personal entanglements would make them less dedicated to the job. I’d be more concerned about what would happen once you landed the job. If a ring would make enough of a difference to get you hired, its absence later would surely be questioned. Would you keep wearing it? W hat if you met a legitimate romantic prospect through the new job? Your connubial contrivance could raise more questions

Believe me, I know what it’s like to feel treated as less than half of an entity. But have you truly “never been ... in a relationship of any kind?” What about friends? Family? Colleagues? Fellow hobbyists? Is there no one whose company you’ve enjoyed for years, even if you haven’t seen each other naked? Those relationships count, the same way volunteer work counts as experience — you’re just not

bound to them by vows or a paycheck. Instead of jewelry shopping, spend your time and money with friends or a professional who can help you see yourself not as a lonesome loser but as a singular sensation who would be an asset to any workplace. I can already feel the flames: “How dare you slam someone for pretending to be married when you condoned hiding pregnancy in a previous column?” There’s a difference between not volunteering private facts that could expose you to illegal bias and implicitly lying about your marital status to gain questionable advantage in a job hunt. The latter is akin to listing on your résumé a club you don’t belong to — or donning a fake pregnancy belly in the hope that it makes you look like the nurturing type. Toastmasters ... Where Leaders Are Made

J?JB;0 Urban grower for Common Good City Farm I7B7HO0 $30,000-$40,000 M>7J I>; :E;I0 Adalja helps plant and harvest the 5,000 pounds of organic crops grown each year at Common Good’s half-acre urban farm just south of Howard University — tomatoes in the spring, okra in the summer and kale in the winter. She also teaches workshops to lowincome D.C. residents and students about growing and harvesting their own food and about nutrition, composting and pest control. M>E MEKB: M7DJ J>?I @E850

“The big thing to know about urban farming is that it’s so different from rural farming,” Adalja says. Farming in an urban area — often in underused

spaces like rooftops or abandoned lots — is about more than just growing crops. “Because you’re in the city, you can’t just be out in the field planting, pruning tomatoes.” Becoming part of the community is crucial. “If you’re interested in growing, period, maybe be a rural farmer,” she says. “If you’re interested in working with people from all different backgrounds, urban farming is fantastic.” >EM I>; =EJ J>; @E80 Adalja has a

background in mental health with a master’s degree in clinical psychology. While working with mentally ill adults at a supported housing facility in New York City, she started a rooftop farming program, learning by trial and error. After realizing that she wanted to combine social work, activism and farming, she knew she needed to hone her growing skills, so she attended an eight-month apprenticeship in ecological horticulture at the University of California, Santa Cruz’s Center for Agroecology & Sustainable

Food Systems. Then she landed the job at Common Good. >EM OEK 97D =;J J>?I @E80

For those interested in urban farming, Adalja recommends doing an apprenticeship at a rural farm for a growing season, usually from March through November, to get practical experience in farming on a larger scale. Many farms in Northern Virginia offer seasonal farming apprenticeships, often with pay and housing, she says. She recommends searching for farms on Localharvest. org and asking farmers about internships. There are also local opportunities to learn hands-on urban agriculture. Common Good, which planted its first seeds in 2007, hosts interns (Commongoodcityfarm.org), and Adalja recommends the Master Gardener program at the University of the District of Columbia (Udc.edu) and urban farming training programs at ECO City Farms in Edmonston, Md. (Ecoffshoots.org), and the Accokeek Foundation in Accokeek, Md. (Accokeekfoundation.org). ERIC KROH (FOR EXPRESS)

COURTESY OF THE MAGNETIC FIELDS

The Magnetic Fields have found a permanent place on the soundtrack of D.C. spring, thanks to their perfect love song, “Washington D.C.” The band’s synthy retro sound lends nostalgia to even the cleverest or most depressing lyric (and they have plenty of both). Here’s hoping they play the song that shares its name with our fair city. 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW; 7 p.m., sold out; 202265-0930, 930.com. (U Street)

“Hotel Impossible,” but that doesn’t mean it’s not enjoyable. Smart, even. Just as Gordon Ramsay shakes up restaurants, “Impossible” host Anthony Melchiorri goes to dysfunctional inns and lodgings to save them from bad habits, indifferent management and unmotivated staffs. The throbbing, tension-manufacturing music is all but stolen from “The Apprentice” — and that show’s score was hardly original.

Melchiorri also speaks or, rather, lectures viewers, hotel owners and workers in a blunt “I’ve seen it all” style not unlike Donald Trump’s. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Accentuate the positive today, and others will be willing to do almost anything for you in gratitude for lightening the mood. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Be careful with someone who doesn’t know you well yet; you don’t want him or her to take what you say the wrong way, even temporarily. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Consider options that are presented by someone who seems to understand what makes you tick. He or she is eager to forge a deeper bond. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Delve deeper into your past than usual and you’ll uncover an important piece of information that has long been obscured. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Eventually you will come to terms with something you did long ago, but today you may still find it hard to believe that you did it at all.

Friday’s Solution

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Yes, it’s time for you to put your foot down; someone you know quite well is overstepping his or her bounds, and you must do something about it.

<EKH H79A JEJ7B Make a 2-7 letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. 7-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Forgo your usual customs today in favor of an unusual option from someone who seems to have a little mischief in mind. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You may have to report goings-on in and around the home today, and there is no way to put a positive spin on certain events.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You can use the element of surprise very much to your advantage today; by day’s end, you’ll be debriefing with an ex-rival. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) What is the difference between something that is modern and something that is not? Today, you’ll be exploring this question in depth. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You may not be able to steer clear of all distractions today, but you can limit the time you spend away from your duties.
