Obama: Health Law ‘Here to Stay’ After 7.1 million sign-ups, will rally save the Democrats?

Mocking his critics, President Barack Obama boasted Tuesday that 7.1 million people have signed up for his health-care law, an unexpected comeback after a disastrous rollout sent his poll numbers plummeting and stirred fears among Democrats facing re-election this fall. “The debate over repealing this law is over,” he declared. It’s “here to stay.” But the late enrollment surge may do little to change the political dynamics heading into the midterm elections, particularly for Democrats running in conservative states where the health law and the president himself remain deeply unpopular. On a mid-April day last year, Glenn Beck was in a full lather. Less than one week had passed since bombs had exploded at the Boston Marathon, killing three. The FBI had just identiﬁed the Tsarnaev brothers as primary suspects behind the attack. But to Beck, this wasn’t enough. In attendance at the marathon had been a 20-year-old Saudi Arabian student named Abdulrahman Alharbi. He’d been injured at the race, later questioned by police and ultimately cleared of wrongdoing. Beck, however, had suspicions. The radio host urged the U.S. government to release information on Alharbi or Beck would “expose” him. “Let me send this message very clear,” Beck said. “We know who this Saudi national is … We know who this man is, and, listen to me

carefully, we know he is a very bad, bad, bad man.” The broadcaster later called Alharbi the “mone y ma n” behind the attacks. “You know who the Saudi is?” Beck asked. “He’s the money man. He’s Beck the guy who paid for it.” “Is this speculation or are you reporting something?” a co-host asked. Beck ignored the question. “He’s the money man.” The “money man” has now filed a defamation suit against Beck, who has made a career out of conspiratorial musings. Palestinian Surprise Could Derail Talks In a surprise move that could derail U.S. peace efforts, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday resumed a campaign for further U.N. recognition of a Palestinian state, despite a previous promise to suspend such efforts during nine months of negotiations with Israel. Shortly after Abbas’ announcement, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry canceled plans to return to the Middle East on Wednesday, but also said it’s “completely premature” to write off the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks he restarted in late July.

Troubled Silver Spring hub may still need repairs after it opens

Arlington The long-delayed Silver Spring Transit Center may open by late summer or early fall, Montgomery County, Md., officials said, but there is uncertainty over how to complete needed repairs — raising the possibility that the work could be done after the opening date, perhaps on nights or weekends. Officials also disclosed this week that County Executive Isiah Leggett has convened a working

group of independent engineering and construction experts to review plans to repair the troubled center and make recommendations. The group, formed by Leggett several months ago without any public announcement, is expected to deliver a report sometime in the next couple of weeks. The $120 million facility on Colesville Road, originally viewed as an essential element in the revitalization of downtown Silver Spring, was intended to serve as a uniﬁed hub for Metrorail, Ride On, MARC, Kiss and Ride and taxi service. But the project is more than two years behind schedule and tens of millions of dollars over budget.

He said Monday he hoped to turn the building over to Metro, the facility’s operator, by early summer. “June if the weather cooperates, maybe July,” Leggett said, referring to the time and warmer temperatures that workers need to pour a new layer of latex-modiﬁed concrete to address the cracking. Once it is given control of the center, Metro will have 60 days to evaluate the facility and decide whether to accept it. Off icials have said Tatum bought 42-gallon trash bags on March 2, and was seen spending time at Kenilworth park the same day. The search of the park began last week and continued Tuesday. A new strategy was announced Monday that Prince George’s County, Md., officials say is aimed at spurring development and growth around the county’s transit centers. Cherry Blossoms or Bust? A model developed by researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle predicts that D.C.’s cherry trees will reach peak bloom April 10. Five years ago, Sarah Trautwein, 19, lost control of her 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt on Interstate 95 near Charleston, S.C. Her car began to run off the road, authorities said, causing her to overcorrect and hit a tree in the median. She died instantly. Her family took small comfort in the idea that she had fallen asleep at the wheel. At least, they thought, she died in peace. So they were shaken in recent weeks when they learned about similar crashes tied to a faulty ignition switch that caused Cobalts and other small GM cars to switch off while in motion, stiffening their brakes and steering, and disabling their air bags. “This opens up a whole new thing. It is kind of crazy,” said Phil Trautwein, Sarah’s brother. Last week, the family learned from police that Sarah’s air bag had never deployed — as was the case for 12 others who died in accidents that GM has linked to the defect. Congress opened hearings Tuesday into GM’s handling of the faulty ignition switches. Among the questions: Why did it take years for a safety defect to be announced? The fix for a faulty ignition switch linked to 13 deaths would have cost 57 cents, members of Congress said Tuesday as they demanded answers from General Motors’ new CEO on why the automaker took 10 years to recall cars with the defect. At a hearing on Capitol Hill before a House subcommittee, GM’s Mary Barra acknowledged that the company took too long to act. She promised changes at GM that would prevent such a lapse from happening again but admitted that she didn’t know why it took years for the defect to be announced. Hayes learned that her son had been drinking and was not wearing a seat belt and settled on that as an explanation for his death until she learned about the ignition-switch problems. About a month ago, she learned from police that the air bags in the car had never deployed. Samantha Denti of Tom’s River, N.J., said her 2005 Cobalt lost power three times on the highway, nearly causing accidents as motorists swerved to avoid hitting her. “All of a sudden, my car went from 45 to 0 within seconds,” Denti said. “This car was surely a death trap. … My hope is that the horror stops right now.” MICHAEL A. If jostled, the faulty switches turn off the engine abruptly while the car is in motion, disabling the air bags and causing the brakes and power steering to stiffen. “At the core of the problem is a part in the vehicle’s ignition switch that is 1.6 millimeters less ‘springy’ than it should be. Because this part produces weaker tension, ignition keys … may turn off the engine if shaken just the right way,” NPR reported.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration contacted GM about consumer complaints in 2007. The agency considered investigating why air bags in some GM cars failed to deploy but on two occasions decided there wasn’t enough evidence to act. The NHTSA said it launched probes into three crashes linked to the faulty switches, but they “were stymied by a host of complicating factors.”

Whether GM was intentionally misleading when it delayed disclosing and correcting the problem with the faulty ignition switch. Automakers are required by law to report deaths, injuries and other defect-related information to federal authorities in a timely fashion. However, the Justice Department, which has launched a criminal investigation into GM, could go after it for wire fraud. (T WP)

Why didn’t GM do anything? That’s what Congress and federal investigators are trying to figure out. One theory is that GM’s corporate culture discourages discussion of bad news. GM has said that engineers struggled for years to pinpoint the source of the problem.

Virginia men’s basketball coach Tony Bennett has begun negotiating a lucrative contract extension with athletic director Craig Littlepage, less than a week after the team’s memorable season ended in the Sweet 16, according to a person with direct knowledge of the situation. Bennett, who is currently signed through 2019, is also in the process of obtaining raises and new contracts for his coaching staff. Upon being hired by Virginia before the 2009-10 season, Bennett agreed to a five-year contract with an annual salary of $1.7 million. When the Cavaliers qualified for the NCAA tournament in 2011, he inked a five-year extension that did not raise his compensation level. Sports Four-time champion at Augusta will miss tourney for ﬁrst time Golf Tiger Woods had surgery on his ailing back and said Tuesday he will miss the Masters for the first time in his career. Woods said on his website that he had surgery Monday in Utah for a pinched nerve that had been hurting him for several months, knowing the surgery would keep him from Augusta National next week for the ﬁrst time since he was in high school. The No. 1 player in the world is a four-time Masters champion. “After attempting to get ready for the Masters, and failing to make the

necessary progress, I decided in consultation with my doctors to have this procedure done,” Woods said. “I’d like to express my disappointment to the Augusta National membership, staff, volunteers and patrons that I will not be at the Masters. “It’s a week that’s very special to me,” he said. “It also looks like I’ll be forced to miss several upcoming tournaments to focus on my rehabilitation and getting healthy.” The Masters gets the highest television ratings of any golf tournament, and while Woods last won a green jacket in 2005, he commands most of the attention. Marquette has picked Duke assistant Steve Wojciechowski as its next men’s basketball coach. The school announced its hiring of the 37-year-old Wojciechowski on Tuesday. Oh, ‘Mother!’

About 15 minutes into Monday’s series finale of “How I Met Your Mother,” I finally figured out how the show was going to end. So when the big reveal came that — SPOILER ALERT — Ted meets the titular Mother, they fall in love, have kids, and then she dies, leaving 2030 Ted free to get back together with his ex-girlfriend Robin, I wasn’t exactly shocked. And for the most part, the finale was a surprisingly funny, often fitting farewell to a show I’d stuck with (no matter how unfunny it By Rudi got) for nearly a decade. Greenberg It worked, even if the final scene undercuts the very mystery that had kept me watching. “HIMYM” was supposed to shirk the sitcom conventions it ultimately succumbed to. Early on, Ted and Robin made for a compelling will they/won’t they coupling because we assumed they would never end up together. The show had a very specific moment it was building to. Instead, that moment was just an elaborate misdirection. After trying early on to distance itself from “Friends,” “HIMYM” ended in almost the same way — with its longsuffering couple together in the end. In 2012, I interviewed Josh Radnor, who played Ted, and he said, “I don’t think it matters” who the Mother is. In the end, it truly didn’t. What’s the Deal With Sam Smith? The Internet is going crazy for Sam Smith, who overshadowed everyone’s weird uncle, Louis CK, on “Saturday Night Live” over the weekend. Performing his single “Stay With Me,” the 21-year-old Brit proved he can stand up to a gospel choir and a string section, and with “Lay Me Down,” he showed he can shine on his own. He’s got hair like Morrissey’s and songs mopey enough to match, but his brassy pipes are more like fellow R&B phenom Adele’s. The crooner burst onto the scene in 2012, when he was featured on British electronic duo Disclosure’s hit “Latch,” and he appeared on producer Naughty Boy’s hit “La La La” the next year. The songs, both of which neared the top of the U.K. singles chart, are bouncy dance tracks, but Smith’s own music is more of the sentimental variety heard on “SNL.” He told Interview magazine that recording his songs was like “telling strangers my deepest and darkest emotions.” If they sound anything like “Lay Me Down,” then keep ’em coming.

Adele, below left, tweeted her love for Smith’s song “Nirvana” back in October. Taylor Swift, below right, brought him out as a special guest during a concert in London, calling him her “absolute new favorite.” And Smith’s mum thinks he’s worth risking her job over: In 2009 she sued her former employer, London brokers Tullett Prebon, who fired her from her sixfigure job amid accusations she was promoting her son’s career on company time.

Smith came in fourth on MTV UK’s listener-voted Brand New for 2014 contest. He went on to snatch the Brits’ Critics’ Choice Award and a coveted spot at the top of the BBC Sound of 2014 poll. For context, the last performers to win both distinctions went on to be international stars: Ellie Goulding in 2010 and Adele in 2008. Looks like Smith’s in pretty good company.

In an interview with the New York Times last week, Smith said he gravitates toward “big female voices” like Whitney Houston and Etta James. And it’s sounds like those he wants to emulate. “There’s some amazing guy singers out there at the moment, but I want to have the presence vocally that some of the divas did. We need a male diva, and not in personality. I miss those George Michael and Elton John types, those people who would float in and out of genres, because that’s what I like to do with my music — be genreless. I want it to be about my voice and what I’m saying,” he told the Times.

His first LP, “In the Lonely Hour,” arrives May 26. And thanks to “SNL,” “Stay With Me” is already at No. 4 on iTunes’ songs chart. Sure, it may seem a little early to declare Smith the next pop phenomenon, but remember the last newcomer to generate this much buzz? It was a 16-year-old New Zealander with a big voice named Lorde. And we all know how that turned out.

With A-listers like Matthew McConaughey and Halle Berry jumping to TV, actor Bradley Whitford marvels at how stigma of the small screen is now a thing of the past. Whitford is best known for his role as Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman on NBC’s critically acclaimed series “The West Wing.” “I was getting better writing by an exponential amount than Meryl Streep when I was on ‘West Wing,’ ” the 54-year-old actor said. “I was so grateful. “Now unfortunately, all the movie stars, the big flossers, have realized that not only do you get great writing, [but] it’s a really satisfying way of storytelling. … It’s not about blowing stuff up.” He hopes this trend won’t mean qualified actors will be overlooked for someone with a bigger name. “If anybody had any idea that ‘Breaking Bad’ was gonna be a 10th as successful as it was, Vince [Gilligan, the show’s creator] would not have been allowed to write it,” Whitford said. “Bryan [Cranston] would not have been allowed to be in it. None of that beautiful cast would be in it. Same with ‘The Sopranos.’ We never would’ve met James Gandolfini if anybody thought it was gonna be successful.” Whitford said that was true to a certain extent with “West Wing.”

It’s about politics, that never works,’ ” he said. “People found it and it grew to be much bigger than we ever thought it would be.” Whitford stars on the ABC comedy “Trophy Wife” (9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays). He plays an older husband with a younger wife (Malin Akerman) and two ex-wives (Marcia Gay Harden and Michaela Watkins). Ratings for “Trophy Wife” have been so-so, but Whitford is hoping for a second season.
