Obama: Health Law ‘Here to Stay’ After 7.1 million sign-ups, will rally save the Democrats?

Mocking his critics, President Barack Obama boasted Tuesday that 7.1 million people have signed up for his health-care law, an unexpected comeback after a disastrous rollout sent his poll numbers plummeting and stirred fears among Democrats facing re-election this fall. “The debate over repealing this law is over,” he declared. It’s “here to stay.” But the late enrollment surge may do little to change the political dynamics heading into the midterm elections, particularly for Democrats running in conservative states where the health law and the president himself remain deeply unpopular. Even Obama’s advisers acknowledge that the public’s views on the law are unlikely to shift significantly between now and November. Still, with millions of people

President Barack Obama, left, and Vice President Joe Biden arrive Tuesday at the White House Rose Garden to talk about the success of the Affordable Care Act.

Where Do Republicans Go From Here? The desire among Republicans to fully dismantle President Barack Obama’s signature achievement remains tempting, especially for tea party members who have significant clout in the House. Speaker John Boehner declared Monday that House Republicans will keep working to repeal the law, and he announced yet another vote this week to undo a portion. And then there’s House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., above, who unveiled a spending proposal Tuesday that would slash more than $5 trillion in federal spending over the next decade — primarily by repealing the Affordable Care Act. now receiving health benefits under the law, Democrats see an opportunity to undercut Republicans still pushing to repeal “Obamacare.” And GOP lawmakers, wary of overplaying their political hand, are indeed grappling with whether to press forward with repeal or narrow their focus on replacing the law with different health measures. “Why are folks working so hard for people to not have health insurance?” Obama asked a group of administration officials and supportive members of Congress in the White House Rose Garden. “Why are they so mad about the idea of people having health insurance?” Underscoring his point, Obama quoted from letters he said he had received from people helped by the law. But Republicans responded in a new round of their own quotes from people complaining about rapidly rising rates. “The band may be playing in the White House, but hearts aren’t light for Americans struggling to afford Obamacare’s higher costs,” said a release from the Senate Republican Communications Center. Following Francis’ Lead: Archbishop Wilton Gregory, left, seems to have gotten the pope’s message about modest living. Days after Pope Francis permanently removed a German bishop for his lavish spending on a new residence, the Atlanta archbishop apologized for building a $2.2 million mansion as his residence and said he’d consider selling the nearly 6,400-square-foot Tudor mansion in Buckhead, Atlanta’s toniest neighborhood. Nation Victim Files Defamation Suit Against Glenn Beck

No Barrier to God

MATT YORK (AP)

Boston

THE MOST REV. GERALD F. KICANAS, bishop of Tucson, Ariz., offers Holy Communion on Tuesday to those on the Mexican side of the border in Nogales, Ariz. Kicanas and Boston Archdiocese Cardinal Sean O’Malley visited the border to bring awareness to immigration reform and to remember those who have died trying to cross the border in years past.

On a mid-April day last year, Glenn Beck was in a full lather. Less than one week had passed since bombs had exploded at the Boston Marathon, killing three. The FBI had just identified the Tsarnaev brothers as primary suspects behind the attack. But to Beck, this wasn’t enough. In attendance at the marathon had been a 20-year-old Saudi Arabian student named Abdulrahman Alharbi. He’d been injured at the race, later questioned by police and ultimately cleared of wrongdoing. Beck, however, had suspicions. The radio host urged the U.S. government to release information on Alharbi or Beck would “expose” him. “Let me send this message very clear,” Beck said. “We know who this Saudi national is … We know who this man is, and, listen to me

carefully, we know he is a very bad, bad, bad man.” The broadcaster later called Alharbi the “mone y ma n” behind the attacks. “You know who the Saudi is?” Beck asked. “He’s the money man. He’s Beck the guy who paid for it.” “Is this speculation or are you reporting something?” a co-host asked. Beck ignored the question. “He’s the money man.” The “money man” has now filed a defamation suit against Beck, who has made a career out of conspiratorial musings. Beck has not responded publicly to the suit, which was filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Boston. TERRENCE McCOY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Palestinian Surprise Could Derail Talks In a surprise move that could derail U.S. peace efforts, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday resumed a campaign for further U.N. recognition of a Palestinian state, despite a previous promise to suspend such efforts during nine months of negotiations with Israel. Shortly after Abbas’ announcement, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry canceled plans to return to the Middle East on Wednesday, but also said it’s “completely premature” to write off the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks he restarted in late July.

In Brief

The White House said Tuesday that President Barack Obama has not made a decision on whether to release convicted spy Jonathan Pollard. People familiar with Mideast peace talks say the U.S. is talking to Israel about releasing Pollard early from his life sentence as an incentive to the Israelis to keep negotiating with the Palestinians. White House spokesman Jay Carney said Tuesday that while no decision has been made, “there are obviously a lot of things happening in that arena.” (AP)

“We are continuing, even now … to be engaged with both parties,” Kerry said. “We urge both sides to show restraint while we work

Flight Diverted After Man Threatens Cabin Crew Police said Tuesday a Lufthansa plane was diverted after a passenger being deported from Germany threatened the cabin crew with a broken razor blade. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas applied for greater U.N. recognition on Tuesday.

with them.” However, Abbas’ decision threw into doubt Israeli claims that a deal was emerging that would have

extended Israel-Palestinian talks beyond an April 29 deadline. It remained unclear whether Abbas’ dramatic announcement

was a negotiating tactic or signaled a fundamental shift in strategy. In a hastily convened ceremony televised live from his West Bank headquarters, Abbas signed “State of Palestine” applications for 15 U.N. agencies and conventions, and said the Palestinians would launch the applications process immediately. Abbas said he was compelled to act because Israel had failed to carry out a promised release of Palestinian prisoners by the end of March, which was one of the conditions the sides agreed to when Kerry nudged Israelis and Palestinians back to the table in July, after a five-year break in negotiations. Israel argues that the release was contingent on the Palestinians negotiating “in good faith.” KARIN LAUB AND MOHAMMED DARAGHMEH (AP)

A reinvigorated NATO flexed old Cold War muscles Tuesday as the Atlantic alliance’s chief recommitted to defending Eastern European and Baltic nations rattled by Russia’s military moves and its annexation of Crimea. At the opening of a two-day meeting of NATO foreign ministers, Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the alliance has not seen signs of Russian troop withdrawals along the Ukraine border, as Moscow has claimed. A senior U.S. State Department official had called Russia’s promised pullback a “gesture,” but a welcome one. “We have all challenged the tactics of intimidation,” Secretary of State John Kerry said after meeting Tuesday with NATO members and envoys from Ukraine. many military and civilian ties with Russia over its military incursion and annexation of Crimea, but stopped short of ordering new troop deployments of its own that could provoke a larger confrontation. “NATO has consistently worked for closer cooperation and trust with Russia” for two decades, the ministers said in a statement. “However, Russia has violated international law” and its agreements with NATO, they said. “It has gravely breached the trust upon which our cooperation must be based.” An estimated 35,000 to 40,000 Russian troops equipped with tanks, other armored vehicles and fixed and rotary wing aircraft remained positioned near the border with Ukraine, a NATO military official said Tuesday. Despite annexing Crimea, Russian President Vladimir Putin and other Kremlin officials have

French Tea Party Rising? Social conservatives revolt, making life hard for Socialists

Steeped in conservative rage and tasting of grassroots, a political backlash has traditional politicians and the news media asking the once-unthinkable: Is le tea party brewing in France? If it were, it would be populated by the likes of Catherine MasMezeran, a Parisian mother of three who wrinkles her nose at the mention of President Francois Hollande. She calls him “the Socialist,” which, technically, he is. But if President Barack Obama had the birthers, Hollande now has the baptismists. Like others in a growing movement here, she firmly believes an unsubstantiated rumor emanating from conservative circles that Hollande may have secretly renounced his Christianity. “He has rejected his baptism,” she said. “This is really shocking.” An Elysee Palace spokesman

responded, “This rumor is as ridiculous as it is unfounded.” The movement’s strength in numbers, however, cannot be ignored. Initially a reaction to a same-sex marriage law passed last year, the movement has morphed into the most sustained mobilization of social conservatives in France in more than a generation. A reinvigorated right delivered a blow to Hollande in Sunday’s local elections across the country,

prompting Hollande to reshuffle the French government on Monday. Although called the “tea party, a la Francaise” by some, the mobilizations in many ways differ from the American version. While some are indeed railing against high taxes and public waste, big government is generally considered good government in France, no matter your spot on the political spectrum. Yet, observers say, comparisons to the U.S. tea party movement are not entirely off. The movement is politicizing a new class of conservatives who were previously under the radar, leading to challenges for politicians on the right who have veered too close to the center. “I voted for Hollande, but never again will I vote Socialist,” said Mourad Salah, a factory worker who took his children out of public schools for one day in January to protest new lessons being tested in some French schools aimed at dispelling gender stereotypes. “They are backing policies that are affecting our children. I now understand that they have betrayed us.”

MOHAMMED BADIE, center, the jailed leader of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, appears in court Tuesday for a new trial in which he and 50 Brotherhood members face charges ranging from threatening to destabilize the country to plotting to kidnap the country’s former powerful military chief.

A series of attacks north of Baghdad killed eight soldiers on Tuesday as Iraq’s election campaign officially kicked off ahead of the April 30 nationwide vote. Iraq is holding its first parliamentary elections since the U.S. troops’ withdrawal in late 2011. Candidates are vying for 328 assembly seats in the deeply divided country, plagued by violence and corruption. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is eyeing a third term, even as he faces criticism by opponents who accuse him of failing to provide security and basic services. (AP)

Troubled Silver Spring hub may still need repairs after it opens

Washington

Arlington The long-delayed Silver Spring Transit Center may open by late summer or early fall, Montgomery County, Md., officials said, but there is uncertainty over how to complete needed repairs — raising the possibility that the work could be done after the opening date, perhaps on nights or weekends. Officials also disclosed this week that County Executive Isiah Leggett has convened a working

group of independent engineering and construction experts to review plans to repair the troubled center and make recommendations. The group, formed by Leggett several months ago without any public announcement, is expected to deliver a report sometime in the next couple of weeks. The $120 million facility on Colesville Road, originally viewed as an essential element in the revitalization of downtown Silver Spring, was intended to serve as a unified hub for Metrorail, Ride On, MARC, Kiss and Ride and taxi service. But the project is more than two years behind schedule and tens of millions of dollars over budget.

in his campaign for a third term. Leggett insists that he has been proceeding deliberately and responsibly. He said Monday he hoped to turn the building over to Metro, the facility’s operator, by early summer. “June if the weather cooperates, maybe July,” Leggett said, referring to the time and warmer temperatures that workers need to pour a new layer of latex-modified concrete to address the cracking. Once it is given control of the center, Metro will have 60 days to evaluate the facility and decide whether to accept it. If the review goes smoothly, the center could be open by late summer or early fall. BILL TURQUE (THE WASHINGTON POST )

The Circulator is running two additional hours on weeknights and offering Saturday service on two of its routes. They have dubbed the change “summer service,” which will run through Sept. 30. The Union Station-Navy Yard route will run Monday through Friday, 6 a.m.-9 p.m. and Saturdays, 7 a.m.-9 p.m. There will be extended Circulator service for Nationals’ night games. Police: Body Was Tatum Discovery in NE park hasn’t yielded clues in search for Relisha Washington Discovering the body of the man suspected of abducting, and possibly killing, 8-year-old Relisha Rudd has brought investigators no closer to finding the missing homeless girl, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said Tuesday afternoon. Lanier said she believes the dayslong search of the 700-acre Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens in Northeast will end in the next day or so. If they turn up empty, she said, police will not stop looking for Relisha. “The investigation will not end when the search [in the park] ends,”

“We found nothing that has helped us with our search for Relisha.” — D.C. POLICE CHIEF CATH Y L A NIER, ON A SEARCH OF KENILWORTH PARK THAT DISCOVERED THE BODY OF THE SUSPECTED ABDUCTOR BUT NOT OTHER CLUES AS TO THE 8-YEAR-OLD’S WHEREABOUTS

Lanier said. “This is one component of the investigation.” Police went to the park six days ago after receiving tips that led them to believe they may find Relisha’s potential “gravesite,” the chief said. Instead, on Monday they found the body of Kahlil Tatum, the 51-year-old janitor who worked at the shelter where Relisha and her family lived. Tatum is believed

to have taken Relisha weeks ago. Tatum’s body was found in a shed with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and had been there anywhere from 36 hours to several days, Lanier said. His eyeglasses and a gun were found next to him, but no other clues that point to Relisha’s whereabouts. Relisha was last seen on March 1, a few days after her mother, Shamika Young, allowed Tatum to take the girl, police said. Off icials have said Tatum bought 42-gallon trash bags on March 2, and was seen spending time at Kenilworth park the same day. The search of the park began last week and continued Tuesday. Teams also searched vacant homes in the area hoping to find the girl’s body, police said. P E T E R H E R M A N N

“We are the last jurisdiction with … this type of development opportunity by our Metro stations.”

A new strategy was announced Monday that Prince George’s County, Md., officials say is aimed at spurring development and growth around the county’s transit centers. Officials plan to focus on five of the county’s 15 Metro stations, using investment in infrastructure, financial incentives and regulatory policies to jump-start development. The goal, officials say, is to focus on sites that show the most potential to turn into vibrant urban centers where people can work, live and play. The intent also is to send

a message to developers and investors that the county is willing to take “dramatic steps” to encourage development around transit.

Cherry Blossoms or Bust? A model developed by researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle predicts that D.C.’s cherry trees will reach peak bloom April 10. In early winter, trees enter a dormant period. Cold temperatures make the trees “wake up.” The colder it is, the earlier this happens. After the trees awake, warm temperatures cause them to bloom. The warmer it is in late winter and early spring, the earlier the trees bloom. From 1991 to 2013, the model has been quite accurate, typically off by only a couple of days. The county’s Metro stations are largely surrounded by undeveloped property, and therefore untapped economic potential. With the new initiative the county could accelerate projects that are deemed high quality and that promote walkable communities around the Branch Avenue, Largo Town Center, New Carrollton, Prince George’s Plaza and Suitland Metro stations. Targeting a short list of stations is consistent with the county’s Plan 2035 recommendation to methodically build downtowns similar to the one near the Silver Spring Metro station. What Drove GM’s Silence?

Timeline A report on the Saturn Ion notes problems with the ignition switch but says a design change solved the problems.

Congress grills automaker after it failed to issue a timely recall

GM OKs the design, even though it was told that it didn’t meet specifications.

Feb. 2002

A service technician reports that a Saturn Ion stalled while driving and that the weight of the owners’ keys had worn down the ignition switch.

2003

Five years ago, Sarah Trautwein, 19, lost control of her 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt on Interstate 95 near Charleston, S.C. Her car began to run off the road, authorities said, causing her to overcorrect and hit a tree in the median. She died instantly. Her family took small comfort in the idea that she had fallen asleep at the wheel. At least, they thought, she died in peace. So they were shaken in recent weeks when they learned about similar crashes tied to a faulty ignition switch that caused Cobalts and other small GM cars to switch off while in motion, stiffening their brakes and steering, and disabling their air bags. “This opens up a whole new thing. It is kind of crazy,” said Phil Trautwein, Sarah’s brother. Last week, the family learned from police that Sarah’s air bag had never deployed — as was the case for 12 others who died in accidents that GM has linked to the defect. Congress opened hearings Tuesday into GM’s handling of the faulty ignition switches. Among the questions: Why did it take years for a safety defect to be announced? GM has admitted knowing for at least

A 57-Cent Solution? The fix for a faulty ignition switch linked to 13 deaths would have cost 57 cents, members of Congress said Tuesday as they demanded answers from General Motors’ new CEO on why the automaker took 10 years to recall cars with the defect. At a hearing on Capitol Hill before a House subcommittee, GM’s Mary Barra acknowledged that the company took too long to act. She promised changes at GM that would prevent such a lapse from happening again but admitted that she didn’t know why it took years for the defect to be announced. She deflected many questions about what went wrong, saying an internal investigation is underway. Barra and David Friedman, head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, will continue testimony before a Senate subcommittee today. (AP)

a decade that the switches were defective. Yet it didn’t start recalling 2.6 million Cobalts, Saturn Ions and other small cars until February. Susan Hayes, 49, of Ticonderoga, N.Y., said she received a recall

notice in February for her son’s silver Chevrolet Cobalt. By then, her son, Ryan Quigley, 23, had been dead for more than two years. He and a friend were killed when Quigley’s Cobalt veered off the road and

plunged over an embankment. Hayes learned that her son had been drinking and was not wearing a seat belt and settled on that as an explanation for his death until she learned about the ignition-switch problems. About a month ago, she learned from police that the air bags in the car had never deployed. Samantha Denti of Tom’s River, N.J., said her 2005 Cobalt lost power three times on the highway, nearly causing accidents as motorists swerved to avoid hitting her. “All of a sudden, my car went from 45 to 0 within seconds,” Denti said. “This car was surely a death trap. … My hope is that the horror stops right now.” MICHAEL A. FLETCHER (THE WASHINGTON POST )

March 2005 The Cobalt engineer-

ing manager closes a probe, saying an ignition switch fix would take too long and cost too much. July 29, 2005 Amber Marie Rose

dies in a crash in her 2005 Cobalt. NHTSA contractors found that the Cobalt’s ignition had moved out of the “run” position and into the “accessory” position, which cut off power to power steering and air bags. GM dealers are told to tell Cobalt owners to take excess items off key chains.

Dec. 2005

March 2007 A group of GM

employees learns of the 2005 fatal crash. By the end of the year, GM has data on nine crashes.

Sept. 2007 NHTSA proposes a

study of faulty air bags. Two months later, a NHTSA panel decides not to open a formal probe. GM launches a probe into some Cobalts and Pontiac G5s to determine why air bags didn’t deploy in crashes. In 2012, the probe is closed with no findings.

2011

Incoming CEO Mary Barra learns about the ignition switch defect.

Dec. 2013

What’s wrong with the ignition switch?

What did GM know and when?

Why didn’t federal regulators do anything?

What’s the issue here, legally speaking?

If jostled, the faulty switches turn off the engine abruptly while the car is in motion, disabling the air bags and causing the brakes and power steering to stiffen. “At the core of the problem is a part in the vehicle’s ignition switch that is 1.6 millimeters less ‘springy’ than it should be. Because this part produces weaker tension, ignition keys … may turn off the engine if shaken just the right way,” NPR reported.

See the timeline at right.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration contacted GM about consumer complaints in 2007. The agency considered investigating why air bags in some GM cars failed to deploy but on two occasions decided there wasn’t enough evidence to act. The NHTSA said it launched probes into three crashes linked to the faulty switches, but they “were stymied by a host of complicating factors.”

Whether GM was intentionally misleading when it delayed disclosing and correcting the problem with the faulty ignition switch. Automakers are required by law to report deaths, injuries and other defect-related information to federal authorities in a timely fashion. However, the Justice Department, which has launched a criminal investigation into GM, could go after it for wire fraud. (T WP)

Why didn’t GM do anything? That’s what Congress and federal investigators are trying to figure out. One theory is that GM’s corporate culture discourages discussion of bad news. GM has said that engineers struggled for years to pinpoint the source of the problem.

Feb. 13

GM recalls begin and are later expanded.

A House committee report is revealed with details on 133 warranty claims filed with GM between 2003 and 2012 detailing customer complaints of engine stalling when they drove over a bump or brushed keys with their knees. (AP) Tuesday

Walking Into a New Role FRANK FRANKLIN II (AP)

Espinosa comes off the bench for a huge at-bat in the opener Nationals

Coach Tony Bennett led the Cavaliers to an ACC title this season.

Danny Espinosa never took a day in the major leagues for granted, he said, and his first day back since last summer’s demotion filled him with excitement. He missed the preparation, the team bus rolling to a visiting stadium, playing in front of 40,000 people. He missed the stakes.

On Monday, Espinosa watched from the dugout for three hours as the Nationals and New York Mets scrapped. Then he provided the fulcrum of the afternoon. He came to the plate with two out in the ninth inning. The Nationals trailed by one run. Those 40,000 people frothed for him to make the final out. He reminded himself: stay calm. Espinosa’s role will evolve over the season. The Nationals know for certain only that he will contribute. In Monday’s 9-7 opening day victory, they asked him to keep the game alive, and he gave them what teammates considered the most important plate appearance of the afternoon. Espinosa’s hardearned, eight-pitch walk underscored both his new approach and the reason the Nationals have kept

their faith in him. “I was just trying to get on base right there,” Espinosa said. “It’s nice to be the hero. But I was just trying to extend the inning.” One year ago, Espinosa began the season entrenched as the starting second baseman, but the Nationals sent him to Triple-A after two dismal, strikeout-packed months. They view him now not as trade bait, reclamation project or broken player. They view him as a utility infielder who will play “regularly,” manager Matt Williams said. “I’ve been telling you guys all winter I think he’s a valuable piece

to this club,” Williams said. “He brings a lot to the table, not just defensively but offensively for us.” Would Espinosa have had the patience and the plate discipline last season? “I don’t know,” he said. But

we do know this: In 130 big league, left-handed plate appearances in 2013, Espinosa walked three times. The process will continue all season. He will adjust to a new role, coming off the bench and spelling regulars. “I’ll have to adapt as I go,” Espinosa said. “I’ve never had to deal with it. It’s going to be a process that I’ll kind of learn as I go along.” The coming season will not always seem as exciting and as fun for Espinosa as opening day. But he has made changes necessary for the Nationals to welcome him back. ADAM KILGORE (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Jackson, Redskins Get Close: The Redskins and wide receiver DeSean Jackson have made progress toward a deal, but by Express’ deadline the two sides had not finalized an agreement, two people with knowledge of the situation said. Jackson arrived at Redskins Park on Monday evening and went to dinner with coach Jay Gruden and members of the coaching staff. He also spent time with wide receiver Pierre Garcon and cornerback DeAngelo Hall late Monday night. More meetings were held Tuesday as Washington front-office officials and Jackson’s representative continued negotiations. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Virginia men’s basketball coach Tony Bennett has begun negotiating a lucrative contract extension with athletic director Craig Littlepage, less than a week after the team’s memorable season ended in the Sweet 16, according to a person with direct knowledge of the situation. Bennett, who is currently signed through 2019, is also in the process of obtaining raises and new contracts for his coaching staff. Upon being hired by Virginia before the 2009-10 season, Bennett agreed to a five-year contract with an annual salary of $1.7 million. When the Cavaliers qualified for the NCAA tournament in 2011, he inked a five-year extension that did not raise his compensation level. But Bennett is likely due a substantial raise, particularly after Virginia Tech signed new coach Buzz Williams to a seven-year contract worth $18.2 million. MARK GIANNOTTO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Sports Four-time champion at Augusta will miss tourney for first time Golf Tiger Woods had surgery on his ailing back and said Tuesday he will miss the Masters for the first time in his career. Woods said on his website that he had surgery Monday in Utah for a pinched nerve that had been hurting him for several months, knowing the surgery would keep him from Augusta National next week for the first time since he was in high school. The No. 1 player in the world is a four-time Masters champion. “After attempting to get ready for the Masters, and failing to make the

necessary progress, I decided in consultation with my doctors to have this procedure done,” Woods said. “I’d like to express my disappointment to the Augusta National membership, staff, volunteers and patrons that I will not be at the Masters. “It’s a week that’s very special to me,” he said. “It also looks like I’ll be forced to miss several upcoming tournaments to focus on my rehabilitation and getting healthy.” The Masters gets the highest television ratings of any golf tournament, and while Woods last won a green jacket in 2005, he commands most of the attention. He won his first Masters in 1997 when he set 20 records, from youngest Masters champion (21) to his 12-shot margin of victory. Woods has been coping with back issues since last summer —

Can’t Beat the Sales Kate Middleton bought clothes for her son Prince George at Gap 27

Oh, ‘Mother!’

About 15 minutes into Monday’s series finale of “How I Met Your Mother,” I finally figured out how the show was going to end. So when the big reveal came that — SPOILER ALERT — Ted meets the titular Mother, they fall in love, have kids, and then she dies, leaving 2030 Ted free to get back together with his ex-girlfriend Robin, I wasn’t exactly shocked. And for the most part, the finale was a surprisingly funny, often fitting farewell to a show I’d stuck with (no matter how unfunny it By Rudi got) for nearly a decade. Greenberg It worked, even if the final scene undercuts the very mystery that had kept me watching. “HIMYM” was supposed to shirk the sitcom conventions it ultimately succumbed to. Early on, Ted and Robin made for a compelling will they/won’t they coupling because we assumed they would never end up together. The show had a very specific moment it was building to. Instead, that moment was just an elaborate misdirection. After trying early on to distance itself from “Friends,” “HIMYM” ended in almost the same way — with its longsuffering couple together in the end. In 2012, I interviewed Josh Radnor, who played Ted, and he said, “I don’t think it matters” who the Mother is. In the end, it truly didn’t. Inside Jokes

What’s the Deal With Sam Smith? The Internet is going crazy for Sam Smith, who overshadowed everyone’s weird uncle, Louis CK, on “Saturday Night Live” over the weekend. Performing his single “Stay With Me,” the 21-year-old Brit proved he can stand up to a gospel choir and a string section, and with “Lay Me Down,” he showed he can shine on his own. He’s got hair like Morrissey’s and songs mopey enough to match, but his brassy pipes are more like fellow R&B phenom Adele’s. So where did Smith come from, and — more important — where is he going from here? Below, a guide to spring’s most promising new artist. LORI McCUE (E XPRESS)

His Voice Is Chart-topping Gold

Pop Royalty Loves Him

He’s Racking Up The Music Awards

He’s Ready to Be the Next ‘Male Diva’

And He Hasn’t Even Released an Album

The crooner burst onto the scene in 2012, when he was featured on British electronic duo Disclosure’s hit “Latch,” and he appeared on producer Naughty Boy’s hit “La La La” the next year. The songs, both of which neared the top of the U.K. singles chart, are bouncy dance tracks, but Smith’s own music is more of the sentimental variety heard on “SNL.” He told Interview magazine that recording his songs was like “telling strangers my deepest and darkest emotions.” If they sound anything like “Lay Me Down,” then keep ’em coming.

Adele, below left, tweeted her love for Smith’s song “Nirvana” back in October. Taylor Swift, below right, brought him out as a special guest during a concert in London, calling him her “absolute new favorite.” And Smith’s mum thinks he’s worth risking her job over: In 2009 she sued her former employer, London brokers Tullett Prebon, who fired her from her sixfigure job amid accusations she was promoting her son’s career on company time.

Smith came in fourth on MTV UK’s listener-voted Brand New for 2014 contest. He went on to snatch the Brits’ Critics’ Choice Award and a coveted spot at the top of the BBC Sound of 2014 poll. For context, the last performers to win both distinctions went on to be international stars: Ellie Goulding in 2010 and Adele in 2008. Looks like Smith’s in pretty good company.

In an interview with the New York Times last week, Smith said he gravitates toward “big female voices” like Whitney Houston and Etta James. And it’s sounds like those he wants to emulate. “There’s some amazing guy singers out there at the moment, but I want to have the presence vocally that some of the divas did. We need a male diva, and not in personality. I miss those George Michael and Elton John types, those people who would float in and out of genres, because that’s what I like to do with my music — be genreless. I want it to be about my voice and what I’m saying,” he told the Times.

His first LP, “In the Lonely Hour,” arrives May 26. And thanks to “SNL,” “Stay With Me” is already at No. 4 on iTunes’ songs chart. Sure, it may seem a little early to declare Smith the next pop phenomenon, but remember the last newcomer to generate this much buzz? It was a 16-year-old New Zealander with a big voice named Lorde. And we all know how that turned out.

Want to hear it for yourself? Visit readexpress.com for a sampling of Smith’s songs.

Remember, His Presence Is a Present: Kanye West, left, postponed Australia dates for his muchhyped Yeezus tour to complete work on his next album, Pitchfork reports. West had been scheduled to take the stage in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, Australia, in May, but has pushed those appearances to September. Roc-A-Fella Records, West’s label, has not announced when the album will be released. (E XPRESS)

Small Screen Is Big For Bradley Whitford

TRANSFER

From ‘West Wing’ to ‘Trophy Wife,’ actor’s best roles not on film

CREATIVITY

With A-listers like Matthew McConaughey and Halle Berry jumping to TV, actor Bradley Whitford marvels at how stigma of the small screen is now a thing of the past. Whitford is best known for his role as Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman on NBC’s critically acclaimed series “The West Wing.” “I was getting better writing by an exponential amount than Meryl Streep when I was on ‘West Wing,’ ” the 54-year-old actor said. “I was so grateful. “Now unfortunately, all the movie stars, the big flossers, have realized that not only do you get great writing, [but] it’s a really satisfying way of storytelling. … It’s not about blowing stuff up.” He hopes this trend won’t mean qualified actors will be overlooked for someone with a bigger name. “If anybody had any idea that ‘Breaking Bad’ was gonna be a 10th as successful as it was, Vince [Gilligan, the show’s creator] would not have been allowed to write it,” Whitford said. “Bryan [Cranston] would not have been allowed to be in it. None of that beautiful cast would be in it. Same with ‘The Sopranos.’ We never would’ve met James Gandolfini if anybody thought it was gonna be successful.” Whitford said that was true to a certain extent with “West Wing.”

Television

“West Wing” star Bradley Whitford plays a silver fox on “Trophy Wife.”

“Nobody thought it was gonna work. ‘You can’t have a fake president. It’s about politics, that never works,’ ” he said. “People found it and it grew to be much bigger than we ever thought it would be.” Whitford stars on the ABC comedy “Trophy Wife” (9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays). He plays an older husband with a younger wife (Malin Akerman) and two ex-wives (Marcia Gay Harden and Michaela Watkins). Ratings for “Trophy Wife” have been so-so, but Whitford is hoping for a second season. He said he was “looking to do something different and comedy was definitely something I was looking for.” He also wanted to work with Harden, having seen her Tony-winning performance in Broadway’s “God of Carnage” four times. “It was bordering on stalking,” he said. “By the way,” Whitford added, “on ‘West Wing,’ I was one of the young guys and now (on ‘Trophy Wife’) I’m Wilford (expletive) Brimley. It’s prostate jokes and stuff! There was no segue!” ALICIA R ANCILIO (AP)

Everything’s Coming Up Rosie Rosie O’Donnell will receive an honorary Tony at the awards ceremony for her humanitarian work with her arts education initiative, Rosie’s Theater Kids, according to the Hollywood Reporter. O’Donnell has hosted the Tony ceremony three times and performed on Broadway in several productions. (E XPRESS)

“When your cat wears a Human Shirt, all other cats will wonder if he actually loves people, or if he’s just making an ironic fashion statement.”

“Don’t go breaking our hearts, White Castle.”

— BETABRAND.COM proves the Internet is a gigantic tease on April Fools’ Day by marketing what sadly seems to be a fake line of clothing designed specifically for felines. In a rendering on the clothing brand’s site, the “Human Shirt” and “Human Onesie,” above, are flesh-toned head-to-toe garments, complete with human features, such as chest hair and nipples. The Internet is awful.

— DOMINIQUE ZAMORA AT FOODBEAST .COM pleads with fast food chain

White Castle to be serious about its latest announcement Tuesday — waffle sliders, which purportedly feature fillings like bacon, chicken, eggs, cheese and more between two Belgian waffle “buns.” Alas, Zamora thinks the timing of the announcement of the new sandwiches is a bit fishy. April Fools’ really is the worst ever.

Revealing investigative reports.

“Sports reporting is where all the fun happens.” — COMMENTER BABBLING STUDIOS AT YOUTUBE.COM reacts to a

re-enactment of last weekend’s NCAA game that pit the Dayton Flyers against the Florida Gators. The sports reporters at WCJB-TV news, an ABC affiliate, decided to put together the skit to avoid violating footage usage rules that make the actual game footage proprietary to CBS the day of the game. That rule, however, might be the best thing to ever happen to WCJB — the re-enactment video went viral.

“Netflix is playing its prank by streaming a 73-minute movie of a chicken roasting.” — CAROLINE MOSS AT BUSINESSINSIDER.COM points out

why April Fools’ Day is one of the weirdest days to be on the Internet. The G-rated film is called “Rotisserie Chicken.” Spoiler alert: The plot isn’t juicy, but the chicken is.

“Mr. Biden said he uses a men’s Clinique that has SPF 20.” — LOUISE RADNOFSKY, JARED E. FAVOLE AND COLLEEN McCAIN NELSON AT BLOGS.WSJ.COM recall what Vice

President Joe Biden told talk show host Rachael Ray this week about his skincare regimen. Biden and his moisturized visage went on the Rachael Ray Show on Monday to promote Obamacare. No joke.
