Pennsylvania town elder is literally older than her town

A New York City woman last week accidentally threw out her wedding and engagement rings but — with sanitation workers’ help — recovered them from a dump in Fairview, N.J. Workers identified the truck that took the woman’s garbage and removed 800 bags. Then she and her husband and several workers spent an hour digging through the trash before finding the right bag. The platinum rings were inside, nestled in some tissues. (AP)

Caps fueling on fine dining CAPITALS When he was still with St. Louis, defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk periodically would examine the upcoming schedule to plan for road trips. There’s the cliche of taking things “one game at a time,” but it’s not so simple when it comes to restaurant reservations. Shattenkirk, whom the Capitals acquired last month, circled the date the Blues would be in Chicago, polled who among his teammates would be interested in getting dinner with him and attempted to secure a table at Next Restaurant a month in advance. He had read about the themed prix fixe menu that changes every season, and its chef was featured in Netflix’s “Chef’s Table.” To his disappointment, it was all booked when he called, even with the one-month notice. But the day before the game, Shattenkirk’s girlfriend checked again and was able to get a table after a late cancellation. By 8 p.m., he was enjoying a meal inspired by the Alps. “ That was fi ne di ni ng,”

This season’s team likes to get fancy when it eats out on the road

Capitals defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk has planned meals on road trips a month in advance so he can try new, trendy restaurants in cities they visit.

Shattenkirk said. “That was probably one of the best meals I’ve ever had. But that’s a hard one to do every time you go to Chicago. It’s like a 14- or 15-course meal with wine pairings. It was unbelievable.” The NHL season can be a grind with 82 games, half of which are spent on the road and often away from family. But getting paid handsomely to travel across North America is a perk, one that players often take advantage of by enjoying

some fine dining on occasional off nights on the road. Across his 16 seasons in the NHL, Justin Williams has had restaurant recommendations passed down to him and has now started to do the same, introducing some of his Capitals teammates to Campagnola in New York City. Defenseman Brooks Orpik also has a reputation in Washington’s locker room for knowing which restaurants are best in a given city. As someone who takes his diet and nutrition seriously, Orpik does his research in advance. Vancouver and Montreal are considered among the better food scenes in the league. Before the Capitals’ two road games against the Canadiens this season, center Lars Eller, who played in Montreal for six seasons, suggested several restaurants, including a Japanese fusion spot called Park. Sometimes, the best places are found in serendipitous ways. Defenseman Nate Schmidt said a group of Capitals players went exploring near their hotel in downtown Philadelphia and randomly came across Sampan. “We’ve gone there every single time since,” Schmidt said. Cherry blossoms reached peak bloom Saturday The National Park Service said D.C.’s famous cherry trees reached peak bloom Saturday. This year’s bloom was different from in the past because cold weather killed half of the blossoms on the trees just as they were reaching peak bloom. Due to the cold snap, officials defined peak bloom as the day 70 percent of the remaining blossoms were open. (AP) VIRGINIA

Washington’s whiskey made official state spirit Virginia is honoring native son George Washington for his whiskey making. Gov. Terry McAuliffe recently signed legislation recognizing Washington’s rye whiskey produced at his Mount Vernon estate as the official state spirit. Washington went slowly at first, producing 600 gallons in 1797. But in 1799, the year of his death, his distillery produced nearly 11,000 gallons. It was the largest in the country at the time. (AP)

Police: Teen planned shooting at her school FREDERICK COUNTY, MD. A shotgun, ammunition and bomb-making materials were found at the Maryland home of an 18-year-old student planning an attack at her high school, authorities announced Monday. After one of the teen’s parents notified Catoctin High School officials Thursday of a potential threat of violence, Nichole Cevario, of Thurmont, was removed from the classroom and turned over to investigators, the Frederick County sheriff’s office said. Cevario was later taken from the school to a hospital for an

emergency evaluation and remains hospitalized, officials said. Cevario’s journal “clearly spelled out” plans for an attack she had been working on for some time, including a timeline of the attack with her expectations for each stage, officials said. She had set a date in April and planned to die on that day. She was acquiring the materials and compiling details about school emergency procedures associated with drills conducted by school staff and on the school resource deputy. Investigators don’t believe anyone was working with Cevario

While explosive materials were located during the investigation, they weren’t combined in any form that created an explosive device. They say the warrants will be served when she is released from the hospital. (AP)

Uber will use Northern Virginia as a testing ground for a new carpooling feature, described by the company as “digital slug lines,” which allow commuters to pool together to use HOV lanes to save time and money. “Commute” will initially be available in Tysons, Fairfax City and Alexandria, targeting the I-66 and I-395 corridors. The company plans to roll out the feature in coming weeks, and is eyeing an eventual expansion to the entire D.C. region depending on the success of the pilot. Drivers will net $5 to $10 per ride and passengers will likely pay a fee within that range, the company says. “By sharing their daily commute, drivers heading to and from D.C. can help recoup the costs of their trip, like gas and parking,” Uber said in a company blog post. March freeze takes a bite out of state’s fruit crop

2nd eagle egg at SW nest won’t hatch, experts say

A Libertarian candidate for Virginia governor has ended his campaign. The Daily Press reports that Jason Carrier has dropped out. Unseasonably warm winter weather followed by a cold snap this month has central Virginia orchard owners and farm managers trying to assess the damage to their crops. The Roanoke Times reports the weather mostly took a toll on fruits such as peaches, nectarines and plums that were blooming when the weather changed. Late-blooming tree fruits like apples are still doing well. (AP)

A mama bald eagle nesting in a large oak tree at the D.C. police facility in Southwest has been spotted over the past few days pushing one of her eggs around the nest — a sign, experts said, that it is not going to hatch. Wildlife experts have officially declared the egg “nonviable.” It isn’t known why the egg didn’t hatch, but it is likely due to natural causes, experts said. (TWP)

Cat cafe hopes purrfect homes are found in Md. ANNAPOLIS The global cat cafe trend has hit Annapolis. Kittens in Cups recently opened its doors at 177 Defense Highway to cats and cat lovers alike. Owner Hailey Taylor hopes to create a comfortable environment for shelter cats that are up for adoption. “It’s about finding these cats homes,” Taylor said. “And get them in an atmosphere where they’re not stuck in cages. I know they’re a lot happier here.” Cat cafes have been popular in Japan for years and have made their way to major cities across the U.S. The D.C. cat cafe Crumbs & Whiskers opened in 2014, and Charm Kitty Cafe is to open later this year at Whitehall Mill in Baltimore. The cats are free to roam wherever they like in the lounge areas, but all of them have personal crates in the back of the cafe. Kittens in Cups offers several packages for local cat lovers: 30 minutes for $7; 75 minutes for $15; three hours for $30; and an all-day pass for the cafe costs $45. For all of the packages, customers can use free Wi-Fi, play with the cats and lounge on the couches. Prepackaged pastries from an Annapolis bakery are for sale. The rules of entry are simple: You have to be older than 7 to enter the cafe’s lounge area and anyone younger than 15 must have an adult with them. One catch, though: You can’t bring your cats from home into the cafe. MEREDITH NEWMAN (THE CAPITAL VIA AP)

Researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts transformed spinach leaves into beating human heart tissue after first discussing the idea over lunch. The scientists were brainstorming new ways to tackle the lack of donor organs. They came up with spinach leaves, whose network of veins is similar to the structure of blood vessels in a human heart. Researchers stripped the leaves of their plant cells, leaving behind cellulose frames, which they then bathed in human cardiac cells. After five days, the cells began to beat. The findings are in the journal Biomaterials.

LONDON Police have found no evidence that the man who killed four people in London last week was associated with the Islamic State group or al-Qaeda, a senior British counterterrorism officer said Monday. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu of the Metropolitan Police said Westminster attacker Khalid Masood had “an interest in jihad,” but police have no indication he discussed his attack plans with others. Basu said Masood Wednesday’s attack — in which Masood ran down pedestrians on London’s Westminster Bridge before fatally stabbing a policeman guarding Parliament — “appears to be based on low-sophistication, low-tech, low-cost techniques copied from other attacks.” Masood was shot dead by police after his deadly rampage, which lasted just 82 seconds. Police believe Masood — a 52-year-old Briton with convictions for violence who had spent several years in Saudi Arabia — acted alone, but are trying to determine whether others helped inspire or direct his actions.

nation+world AP analysis: N.C. could lose $3.76B in business over a 12-year period POLITICS Despite Republican assurances that North Carolina’s “bathroom bill” isn’t hurting the economy, the law limiting LGBT protections will cost the state more than $3.76 billion in lost business over a dozen years, according to an Associated Press analysis. During the past year, the state has suffered financial hits ranging from scuttled plans for a PayPal facility that would have added an estimated $2.66 billion to the state’s economy to a canceled Ringo Starr concert that deprived a town’s amphitheater

of about $33,000 in revenue. North Carolina could lose hundreds of millions more because the NCAA is avoiding the state, usually a favored host. The group is set to announce sites for various championships through 2022, and North Carolina won’t be among them as long as the law is on the books. The NAACP also has initiated a national economic boycott. The AP analysis — compiled through interviews and public records requests — represents the largest reckoning yet of how much the law, passed one year ago, could cost the state. The law excludes gender identity and sexual orientation from statewide antidiscrimination protections, and in many public buildings requires transgender people to

TRENDS At Universal Orlando Resort’s new “Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon” ride, waiting in line has been replaced by lounging on couches and listening to a racy barbershop quartet sing until it’s time to ride. Universal is leading the theme-park charge into “virtual lines” that give visitors options for exploring a park or watching live entertainment instead of looking at someone’s back as you inch forward step by step. “We’ve known for years that waiting in line is one of the biggest dissatisfiers in our guests’ day,” said Jason Surrell, a Universal creative director. And later this year when Universal opens its new Volcano Bay water park in Orlando, Fla., visitors will be given wristbands that will alert them when it’s their turn to get on a ride. Previously, those efforts were concentrated on elaborately designed “pre-ride” lines. Then came ride reservations systems like FastPass and Express Pass at Disney and Universal parks, respectively, where ride-goers are given chunks of time to show up. But those reservations need to be made ahead of time, and only work for three rides a day. Universal is opening that concept to everybody, not just advanced planners, with its new attractions. “I think it represents the future of what we’re going to be doing in themed entertainment,” Surrell said. POLITICS The Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee met on the White House grounds with the source of the claim that communications involving President Trump’s associates were caught up in “incidental” surveillance, the congressman’s spokesman said Monday. The meeting occurred before Rep. Devin Nunes of California disclosed at a news conference Wednesday that U.S. spy agencies may have inadvertently captured Trump and his associates in routine targeting of foreigners’ communications. “Chairman Nunes met with his source at the White House grounds in order to have proximity to a secure location where he could view the information provided by the source,” Nunes spokesman Jack Langer said. Previously, Nunes would not disclose where he had met his source. Nunes has not revealed who it might be. Nunes’ link to the White House has raised concerns that his committee’s investigation is not a bipartisan, independent probe. He also was a member of Trump’s presidential transition team. The top Democrat on the committee, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, said Nunes’ meeting with his source appeared to have

That investigation is also looking into possible ties between Trump associates and the Kremlin. Nunes said the intelligence reports were not related to Russia. The Senate intelligence committee also is conducting an investigation into Russia’s interference in the presidential election and any possible ties with the Trump campaign.

Trump: Business strategies can fix government POLITICS President Trump is establishing a new White House office with sweeping authority to overhaul the federal bureaucracy and fulfill key campaign promises — such as reforming care for veterans and fighting opioid addiction — by harvesting ideas from the business world and, potentially, privatizing some government functions. The White House Office of American Innovation, to be led by Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and senior adviser, will operate as its own nimble power center within the West Wing and will report directly to Trump. Viewed internally as a SWAT team of strategic consultants, the office will be staffed by former business executives and is designed to infuse fresh thinking into Washington, float above the daily political grind and create a lasting legacy for a president still searching for signature achievements. “All Americans, regardless of their political views, can recognize that government stagnation has hindered our ability to properly function, often creating widespread congestion and leading to cost overruns and delays,” Trump said in a statement Sunday. “I promised the American people I would produce results, and apply my ‘ahead of schedule, under budget’ mentality to the government.” ASHLEY PARKER AND PHILIP RUCKER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

and landed on the cover of Vogue. Although Melania has popped up here and there, her absences have unsettled purists who cite Jacqueline Kennedy and Nancy Reagan as beacons of stand-byyour-president rectitude. “This is an important tradition and part of the pomp and parade that is this country,” said Robert Watson, a Lynn University professor who has studied first families. “This is bigger than Melania and Barron and bigger than The Donald.” Yet Melania Trump’s approach may be an opportunity to “retire an anachronistic role,” said Katherine Jellison, an Ohio University history professor. “It’s about being the wife of a high-profile man, and inadvertently she may be disassembling the role. “The signal I’m getting is she doesn’t want to be first lady,” Jellison said. “This is not just low-profile, but no profile.” PAUL

POLITICS Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Monday that the Justice Department will begin using federal law to prevent any “sanctuary cities” from receiving coveted federal grants for state and local law enforcement. “I urge our nation’s states and cities to consider carefully the harm they are doing to their citizens by refusing to enforce our immigration laws,” Sessions said. “Such policies make their cities and states less safe, and put them at risk of losing valuable federal dollars.” Sessions’ announcement follows President Trump’s executive order in January that gave the attorney general the authority to take action against any city that doesn’t readily hand over undocumented immigrants. Sessions said the Justice Department will take steps to “claw back any funds awarded to a jurisdiction” that violates federal law. The Justice Department awards more than $4.1 billion annually in grants to state and local jurisdictions. The attorney general, citing a recent report from the Department of Homeland Security, said that in one week, there were more than 200 instances of jurisdictions that did not honor Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer requests with respect to people charged or convicted of serious crimes. POLITICS The paparazzi no longer stake her out at her son’s private school or search for her on the streets surrounding the black tower that her husband, the president of the United States, named for himself. Like legions of New Yorkers who hibernate in their apartments, Melania Trump is a virtual shut-in. “She’s the great white whale,” said Miles Diggs, a paparazzo, as he and his partner hunted celebrities in Soho on a recent afternoon. They were searching for the actress Emma Watson, who, unlike Melania Trump, they were confident they could find. “When it comes to getting people, I don’t miss,” Diggs said. “But Melania has just been so elusive.” Two months after her husband’s swearing in, the nation’s new first lady approaches her role with a discernible reticence, her paucity of public appearances overshadowed by a vanishing act that stretches for days on end. Yet by retreating to her midtown triplex, where she is said to tend to Barron, the Trumps’ 11-year-old son, the first lady guarantees herself even more attention. An ever-clamorous chorus of gossipmongers, pundits, historians and even bodylanguage experts dissect her every move, fashion choice and facial expression. Among the rare moments the first lady has spoken publicly was while reading Dr. Seuss’ “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” this month to children at a Manhattan hospital. She smiled and seemed receptive when Tara McKelvey, a BBC reporter, approached with a question. “But the aides came

in and swooped her away and had her pose for a picture,” McKelvey said. “She wanted to answer. She was trying to answer.” A few days later, the first lady hosted a White House luncheon to celebrate International Women’s Day, at the start of which guests stood and applauded after someone with an appropriately hushed voice announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, the first lady of the United States.” Karen LeFrak, a friend who attended the White House event, wrote in an email that Melania Trump “didn’t do the lunch for publicity” and she “does not seek attention.” Describing her friend’s adjustment, LeFrak said she is “carving out an important role to support women and children” and “redecorating their residence in the White House,” where she will move after Barron completes the school year. Hillary Clinton did not remain

A rare D.C. appearance Melania Trump is expected this week in Washington, where she’s being billed as the “special guest” at the International Women of Courage awards ceremony at the State Department on Wednesday. Redskins president Bruce Allen hasn’t taken responsibility for the messy firing of Scot McCloughan.

GOODBYE OAKLAND

Raiders get OK to move to Las Vegas

DAN STEINBERG | THE WASHINGTON POST

Bruce Allen wants clarity, so here’s a quick dose. The Redskins hired a lauded personnel man, despite his personal demons, at a time when they desperately needed a public relations boost. They promised to stand by him as he worked through his issues. They said he was “going to be in charge of all the personnel department and the personnel on this team.” They enjoyed their best backto-back seasons in nearly 20 years. And then — after barely two years — they fired that man in an embarrassing public spectacle. In the best possible reading of this, the team made a bad hire that ended badly. Allen finally broke his silence Sunday, 23 days after the team president said general manager Scot McCloughan was “a great guy” who was “dealing with some family matters” but that “as soon as the family matters are cleared up, we’ll be OK.” This was 16 days after Allen fired McCloughan, as an anonymous colleague trashed the GM as a drunk. And the reason Allen offered for making such a nearly unthinkable move on the first day of free agency? “We wanted to give clarity to our free agents and to our staff of where we were going,” Allen

told The Post’s Liz Clarke. “At the beginning of the league year, we needed some clarity,” Allen told ESPN.com. “I thought on the first day of the league year, the free agents we were bringing in, we needed clarity,” Allen told CSN. Now the situation is clear, as clear as industrial sludge. There are some die-hards who have sided with Allen and the team. They think McCloughan had alcohol problems of his own making. They think the team tried to protect him but couldn’t continue the facade when McCloughan’s side started leaking damaging, one-sided details. And they ask why people like me have been so cynical and mistrustful of the team. And this is what I’ve told them: Remember Jim Zorn. The Redskins hired the affable assistant as their offensive coordinator in 2008. After two weeks of limbo, they promoted him to head coach. After two seasons, when the team devolved into chaos, the Redskins publicly undermined for a few carnival-like weeks before finally firing him. The official narrative? “That incompetent buffoon was in over his head!” Nah. Not this time. Not when there’s a pattern stretching over nearly 20 years. Marty Schottenheimer came here with a .630 winning

Mike Shanahan came here with two Super Bowl rings; turns out he was a manipulative leaker. Donovan McNabb came here as a six-time Pro Bowler; turns out he lacked both cardio and brainpower. interpretation, all these people were just bad hires. That could make sense on a case-by-case basis. But as a group? After this many crack-ups, maybe it’s time to look at the people making the hires. So what could Allen have said this week? He could have said it was disgusting for a team representative to have trashed McCloughan. He could have expressed regret that the team did not provide a support system for McCloughan. He could have said that this franchisealtering hire did not work out, and that the responsibility for that rests with the person who made the hire. “I screwed up,” he could have said, “I’m sorry, and I’ll do my best to fix it.” How’s that for clarity?

Invoking his father Al’s name, and copying what the Hall of Fame owner did with the Raiders, Mark Davis is moving the franchise out of Oakland. NFL owners approved a move to Las Vegas 31-1 at the league meetings Monday in Phoenix. Miami was the lone dissenter. “My father used to say the greatness of the Raiders is in the future,” Davis said. “This gives us the ability to achieve that.” The Raiders weren’t satisfied with Oakland’s proposals for a new stadium, and Las Vegas pledged $750 million in public money. Bank of America is loaning Davis $650 million. The team, which moved twice before, will likely play two or three more years in the Bay Area before its $1.7 billion stadium is ready. (AP)

NATIONALS Washington reassigned Brandon Snyder to minor league camp Sunday, a day after doing the same with fellow outfielder Brian Goodwin. Without them, the Nationals’ bench picture is much clearer. Jose Lobaton, Stephen Drew, Chris Heisey and Adam Lind, who all signed major league deals before this season, appear locked into reserve spots. That means three position players — Michael A. Taylor, Wilmer Difo and Clint Robinson — are vying for what appears to be a final bench spot. Catcher Jhonatan Solano was

still in camp Monday, but Lobaton is entrenched as the backup, so Solano would make the roster only in case of injury. Robinson, 32, is not a natural outfielder and is built in the same mold as Lind, primarily a first baseman. Carrying both could limit pinch-running and defensive options late in games. Robinson would also be the third left-handed hitter on the bench, none of whom is an above-average defensive outfielder. Difo, a 24-year-old infielder, would be the most versatile fit after a brief trial run in the

outfield this spring. Multiple scouts consider Taylor, 26, the best defensive outfielder left in camp, but he has struggled in a bench role during his career. As of Monday morning, all three were still in camp. The Nationals likely want to make a decision soon about Robinson to allow him to find a job elsewhere if he doesn’t stay with the Nats. Both Taylor and Difo have options remaining, meaning that unlike Robinson, the Nationals could send either to the minors and not risk losing him. CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

GW rewards interim coach Joseph with five-year deal

Fourteen Senate Democrats sent a letter Monday to USA Hockey, saying members of the women’s national team “deserve fairness and respect” and urging the organization to resolve its pay dispute with the players. The team has vowed to boycott next week’s world championships if USA Hockey doesn’t address concerns over what players feel is inadequate compensation. USA Hockey doesn’t pay the women in non-Olympic years and pays them $6,000 each in the year leading up to a Winter Games. The organization has reportedly explored fielding replacement players. After becoming the NCAA’s alltime leading scorer this season, senior guard Kelsey Plum is the first Washington player to earn AP All-America honors. She averaged 31.7 points for the Huskies while shooting 53 percent from the field. Plum received all 33 votes Monday from the national media panel that chooses the top 25 each week. She is joined on the All-America team by South Carolina’s A’ja Wilson, Maryland’s Brionna Jones and UConn’s Napheesa Collier and Katie Lou Samuelson. Jones, a 6-foot-3 senior center, averaged 19.8 points and 10.8 rebounds. Voting was done before the NCAA Tournament. (TWP)

Maurice Joseph signed a five-year deal to become head coach of the George Washington men’s basketball team, the school announced Monday. As interim coach this season, Joseph led the Colonials to a 20-15 record following the dismissal of coach Mike Lonergan in September. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Joseph, 31, is the youngest coach in the Atlantic 10. The Colonials went 10-8 in A-10 play to finish sixth in the league, two spots above where they were picked in preseason voting. GW also finished first in the league in 3-point percentage. (TWP)

Mindfulness-based programming can boost productivity, creativity and concentration.

Take a real lunch break TRENDS Although the practice of meditation dates to ancient times, sleek, boutique for-profit mindfulness centers — outfitted with Instagram-worthy interiors, complimentary tea stations and soothing Spotify playlists — have spread like Starbucks in Los Angeles and New York. Now, three new meditation centers have popped up in Washington in a four-month span. In a city flush with SoulCycle evangelists, Solidcore soldiers and CrossFit converts, fitnessminded Washingtonians are apparently flexing not just their muscles but also their minds. It’s not surprising that the District — filled with overworked, sleep-deprived, stressed-out Type A personalities — is seeking out meditation as a form of self-care. Researchers have found that mindfulness-based programming not only helps individuals manage stress, depression and anxiety but also enhances

Former Vogue and Glamour editor Suze Yalof Schwartz opened Unplug Meditation in 2014 in Los Angeles. Thousands now flock to the center’s $20 sessions, and there are often waitlists. The meditation buzz in Washington began with the opening in November of Just Meditate in Bethesda, quickly followed in

The meditation business Last year alone, meditation-related businesses in the U.S. generated $984 million in revenue, according to research company IBISWorld. Mindfulness apps and websites, such as Headspace, a guided meditation app that has been downloaded more than 13 million times, have also seen a boom. Fortune 500 companies, schools and sports teams are also following the trend, offering free guided sessions in an effort to boost efficiency; basketball icon Kobe Bryant and Oprah Winfrey are outspoken practitioners. An introductory meditation class is $10; the regular cost is $20 for a 30-minute class and $30 for a 45-minute class. On my lunch break, I tried Recess for Your Mind, a 30-minute guided class designed by instructor Jen Young for busy professionals to catch their breath and reset their focus. Beginners might have trouble initially calming their minds. But for about 30 cents a minute, time is money. Jen’s soothing voice and the escape from technology helped me to tune out noise and focus on my mind and body. When the class was over, I felt like built-up toxins and stress had been kneaded out. But according to a new report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, “these misguided recommendations” have “evolved into a major contributor to the worldwide obesity epidemic.” The analysis says moderate exercise is not only safe and beneficial, but it is recommended even for women who did not exercise before becoming pregnant. The research recommends 20 to 30 minutes a day. To gauge intensity, women can use the “talk test”: If you can carry on a conversation while exercising, you are not overexerting yourself. Taking up the ballerina life Misty Copeland’s new wellness book offers tips — and false hope

Nostalgia is dominating the box office

BEBETO MATTHEWS (AP)

BOOKS Misty Copeland’s new book, “Ballerina Body,” co-authored by Charisse Jones, is handsomely designed and earnestly composed. The premise is appealing: Copeland, a principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre, wants us to embark with her on a journey to wellness, to weave workouts throughout our day and to dine like elite ballerinas do, on shrimp and sushi, washed down with a glass of prosecco. It gets better: If we follow Copeland’s “ballerina body plan,” eating like her and stretching like her, we can, if we’re disciplined enough, look like her. This message is highlighted by the book’s many barely clothed studio portraits of the petite, leggy, hyper-flexible Copeland. The images are awe-inspiring. But the inference is that we can all potentially inspire such awe. “Dancing and Eating Your Way to a Leaner, Stronger, and More Graceful You” is the book’s subtitle. This is all about you, my friend — and “the body you’re in is perfect for you.” Don’t be distracted by that sculpted size-zero beauty in all the photos! “Rather than comparing yourself to photographs,” Copeland writes, “the only visage you need to focus on is the one that stares back at you from your own mirror.” Like many such health-andhealth and

With Misty Copeland’s advice, you can dance and eat your way to a ballerina body like hers. Who knew?

fitness books, “ Ba l leri na Body” demonstrates the contradictions in entreaties about how easy it is to remake our bodies into the conventional ideal if we just work harder at it. The proposition that you, too, can look like me if you follow these simple steps is seductive for obvious reasons. But in actuality it makes little sense. Especially where ballerina’s bodies are concerned. How many of us can see ourselves in Copeland’s ultrathin, highly trained and bendy form? Achieving that kind of body,

in fact, is a dubious aim, as Copeland’s own experience attests. She writes about her painful history of ballet-related injuries, ballet-world prejudice and the tactful but pointed bodyshaming of ballet-company officials. These passages on the physical and emotional costs of her to-die-for figure are the most compelling. Copeland’s journey to becoming the first African-American principal ballerina at ABT is poignant and inspiring. But the book breaks little new ground; she includes the current nutrition, mindfulness and gentle desk-workout principles available in so many forms. As a dance critic and dance lover,

I’d rather that this dance artist spend more time in the studio than at a desk or on book tours. I’m also taking my cue from Copeland’s own words. Dancing is her passion, she tells us, movingly, and she has described how hard she has worked to do it, steeling herself against naysayers, painstakingly strengthening herself after numerous injuries and regaining her lost form. But art is a jealous mistress, as the saying goes, and ballet is possibly the most difficult art to fit into a busy publicity schedule. Excellence in ballet is fleeting, and the window to develop it is narrow, while the array of celebrity diet books is wide. SARAH L. KAUFMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Another furry fighter, Fox’s “Logan” — who was born on ’70s Marvel Comics pages — had a $10.1 million North American weekend and has so far grossed $565.5 million worldwide. One big takeaway is that property branding plus smartly curated nostalgia is often the coin of the realm at the megaplex. Unless your film is part of a recognized franchise, 2017 might be tough going so far at the U.S. box office. MICHAEL CAVNA (THE WASHINGTON POST)
