Rolling With Weather’s Punches After a rough winter, forecasters don’t have great news on spring

“Welcome to spring, Washington. You get 3 days until another Arctic plunge.” “Well the frat boys moved their couches outside, so it really must be Spring #GW #DC” — @hil_gunn ALEX WONG (GETTY IMAGES)

On the first day of spring, there’s some bad news for the winter-weary nation. As much of the United States remained in a deep freeze, government forecasters Thursday predicted temperatures will be below normal this spring across the northern U.S. There’s even a chance of snow on the East Coast next week. “This is one of those winters — the gift that keeps on giving,” said Jon Gottschalck of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The persistent cold is delaying any flooding into April in the upper Midwest to New England. While major flooding is not expected dur-

ing the next three months, forecasters said the greatest threat exists in the southern Great Lakes because of above-normal snowpack, thick ice on streams and rivers, and snow on the ground.

In the West, parched conditions that have clutched California and the Southwest will continue with little relief, the federal government reported in its annual spring outlook. If the drought

The coffee company says it is looking to expand alcohol sales to “thousands of select stores” over the next several years. The chain first offered beer and wine after 4 p.m. at one of its Seattle cafes in 2010. “Starbucks Evenings” is now available in 26 cafes, with plans to reach 40 by the end of the year. (AP)

Americans aren’t as crazy about gum as they once were, with U.S. sales tumbling 11 percent over the past four years. No one in the industry can pinpoint a single factor that’s causing the decline; one theory is an unwillingness to shell out $2 or more for a pack. But the biggest reason may be that people simply have more to chew on — mints, fruit chews — which are less likely to annoy co-workers or dates. (AP)

Justin Casquejo was arrested at 6 a.m. Sunday, was charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass, and his camera and cellphone were seized, police said. According to a criminal complaint, Casquejo told police: “I walked around the construction site and … found a way up through the scaffolding, climbed onto the sixth floor, and took the elevator up to the 88th floor. Parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas may also develop drought conditions, Gottschalck said. While the northern U.S. could see below-normal temperatures, forecasters said it is likely to be warmer than usual along the West Coast and across the southern portion of the country. Nation “I’ll do it again. We’re going to protect Crime Stoppers tips. We’re not going to give it up.” — Richard Masten, the head of Florida’s Miami-Dade County’s Crime Stoppers program, who was found in contempt of court for refusing to divulge details about an anonymous tip — some of it on a piece of paper that he ate rather than turn over at a previous hearing. Masten said he had been ready to go to jail for six months rather than hand over information, but a judge Thursday put him on probation instead.

No Prison Time for Army General Accused of sexual assault, Sinclair gets a reprimand, fine Fort Bragg, N.C. An Army general accused of sexual assault was spared prison Thursday and sentenced to a reprimand and a $20,000 fine — a punishment legal experts and members of Congress condemned as shockingly light. Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Sinclair, 51, immediately announced his retirement, capping a humiliating fall for the battle-tested commander. A disciplinary board could still bust him in rank and reduce his pension.

“The system worked,” Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Sinclair said after the hearing Thursday. “I’ve always been proud of my Army.”

The former deputy commander of the 82nd Airborne Division was originally brought up on sexual-assault charges punishable by

life in prison. But earlier this week, prosecutors dropped those charges in a deal in which Sinclair pleaded guilty to adultery with one woman and conducting inappropriate relationships with two others. Adultery is a crime in the military. The case unfolded with the Pentagon under heavy pressure to confront what it has called an epidemic of rape and other sexual misconduct in the military. Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., called the sentence “laughable.” “This sentence is a mockery of military justice, a slap on the wrist nowhere close to being proportional to Sinclair’s offenses,” she said.

Ex-Naval Academy Football Player Found Not Guilty In another high-profile case Thursday, a military judge in Washington found former Naval Academy football player Joshua Tate not guilty of sexual assault after a three-day trial. Three midshipmen were originally charged, but only one was court-martialed. Prosecutors argued that the woman Tate was accused of assaulting, a classmate, was too drunk to consent to sexual activity. The judge concluded prosecutors had not proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt. (AP)

Obama: World Watching Russia U.S. issues economic sanctions against Putin’s inner circle

Meanwhile …

Washington Raising the stakes in an East-West showdown over Ukraine, President Barack Obama on Thursday ordered economic sanctions against nearly two dozen members of Vladimir Putin’s inner circle and a major Russian bank that provides them support. He warned that more sweeping penalties against Russia’s robust energy sector could follow. Russia retaliated swiftly, imposing entry bans on American lawmakers and senior White House officials, among them Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.; Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.; House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio; and the president’s deputy national security adviser, Ben Rhodes. McCain lamented sarcastically that his spring vacation in Siberia was now “off.” It’s far more than just a U.S.Russia dispute. European Union leaders said they, too, were ready to close in on Putin’s associates, announcing plans to impose travel bans and asset freezes on more Russians involved in the territori-

The Western aim is twofold: to ratchet up the costs for Putin’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and to head off any further Russian military inroads into Ukraine. “The world is watching with grave concern as Russia has positioned its military in a way that could lead to further incursions into southern and eastern Ukraine,” Obama said, speaking from the South Lawn of the White House. Thursday’s volleys deepened the confrontation over Ukraine, a standoff that has become one of the biggest political crises in

Europe since the Cold War. Putin, rather than backing off as the West warns of costs, has defiantly moved military forces into Crimea, backed a referendum in which the Crimean people overwhelming voted to join Russia and then signed a treaty formally absorbing the strategically important peninsula into Russia. In Ukraine, pro-Russian forces seized three Ukrainian warships Thursday, and U.S. officials acknowledge privately that there is little chance of Russia giving up Crimea now. The more pressing concern is stopping Putin from

The Russian parliament’s lower house has given its approval to the country’s annexation of Crimea, ignoring threats from Western powers of more sanctions. The Kremlincontrolled State Duma voted 445-1 on Thursday to make Crimea a part of Russia following a discussion in which members assailed the Ukrainian authorities. Malaysian Leaders Point Fingers It took more than a week, but both sides of Malaysia’s bitterly contested political divide are now sparring over the disappearance and hunt for the missing jetliner, a possible distraction for a government already under fire for its handling of the crisis. The opposition is attacking the government, relishing in the international criticism that has been directed at leaders unused to such scrutiny. Pro-government blogs are focusing on the pilot’s support for opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, hoping that suspicions against the former will discredit the latter. Malaysian politics have been

Obama’s Meeting With Pope Not Just a Photo-Op Washington Meetings between popes and presidents have often been seen as photo opportunities, but people who have advised President Barack Obama on faith issues say his get-together next week with Pope Francis will involve other high-level officials and likely concrete talks about how to boost the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and ease extreme poverty. While there’s a clear appeal to being seen with the planet’s most popular pastor, experts say the trip isn’t without risks for the president. Francis is likely to raise concerns about war and poverty, areas where the Argentine Jesuit appears to favor

more left-leaning solutions than does the current administration. Generally, however, Vaticanwatchers saw huge potential in the meeting between the president, who has focused often on poverty, and the pope, who publicly pined upon his election for “a church that is poor and for the poor.” “Some said that under [Pope John Paul II] and [President Ronald Reagan] there was a meeting of the minds, and it’s potentially true again under Obama and Francis around the issues of social justice,” said Miguel Diaz, a Catholic theologian who served as Obama’s ambassador to the Vatican from 2009 until 2012. Anwar, the opposition movement’s main leader, spent six years in jail on corruption and sodomy charges, a campaign that Western rights groups and governments say is politically motivated. Caws for Alarm The sound an agitated whale might make is never far away in Washington. It’s the noise that’s made by Metro’s aging escalators. So when a reader contacted us to say there were weird bird chirps emanating from the Franconia-Springfield station, I figured the culprit was most likely a malfunctioning SmarTrip dispenser. But I checked on the tip anyway, and was shocked by spokesman Dan Stessel’s response: “It apparently is a real thing.” Our fine feathered friends were creating such a nuisance at that station, he explained, that someone installed a device that plays the sounds of distressed birds and predators to encourage them to flap away. I went to take a gander. Exiting the Blue Line train, I found myself inside an anti-bird fortress. The roof of the station is lined with spikes — they shoot up from signs, beams, pillars. And right outside the faregates is the BirdXPeller Pro that Stessel had told me about. Only it wasn’t making any noise. Jovial station manager J.C. Jackson agreed he couldn’t hear

any of the bird sounds either. But that’s because he tunes it out, he said. And he guesses the birds probably do, too, which would explain why they still come flying at the windows on either side of the entrance. “See those splotches? You can see some wing and beak prints,” he pointed out. Acting on Jackson’s theor y that the device might be motion-activated, I threw my pen into the air in front of it. The technique did successfully result in a sound: the laugh of Justin Grayson, 23, who was getting cash from the station ATM. When I mentioned the bird nois-

“Chirp chirp chirp!” It was faint, but it got louder as I rode down the escalator. one was definitely switched on, and it was blasting scary noises that could have been the soundtrack of “The Birds 2: The Reflocking.” A few feet away, people milling about didn’t seem to be paying any attention. But when I asked Jean Franklin, 57, about the racket, the woman could not have responded more emphatically. She’s been spooked by it before, especially the part of the looped recording that sounds like a deranged monkey playing a kazoo. If only she had the right shoes on, she would have trekked into the odd little sliver of nature that abuts the station to investigate where the noise was coming from. “Other cities have trolls under their bridges. Some species we thought was extinct is living at Franconia-Springfield,” Franklin joked. Since I wore sneakers, I decided to explore the way Franklin could not. I ventured into the bushes, where the only wildlife I managed to track down was a pair of mockingbirds. They were, of course, completely silent.

Md. Lawmakers Move to Ease Estate Tax Bill would gradually increase the state’s exemption level Annapolis The Maryland General Assembly passed a bill Thursday to ease the bite of the estate tax, heeding concerns by some lawmakers that tax burdens were chasing some wealthy residents out of state. Right now, Maryland estates

worth more than $1 million are taxed at a rate of up to 16 percent. That would rise to $1.5 million next year and $2 million in 2016 before the rate kicks in. The exemption would rise to $3 million in 2017 and $4 million in 2018 before being coupled with the federal exemption in 2019. The federal exemption, which is indexed to inf lation, is projected to be $5.9 million in 2019. Senate President Thomas Mike Miller said that he reluctantly sup-

ported the bill to enhance Maryland’s economic competitiveness. Sen. Ronald Young said Maryland should be proud of its high number of millionaires per capita but concerned that, because of the estate tax, many of them move elsewhere when retirement approaches. He and other supporters argued that the loss of estate-tax revenue would be made up by keeping those Marylanders spending at home. Opponents, however, argued that the measure would open a

hole in future budgets of more than $100 million a year. They said there was also little evidence beyond the anecdotal of a widespread migration by wealthy people to states with a lower estate tax. The bill now heads to Gov. Martin O’Malley, who didn’t commit to signing the estate tax cut Thursday. The governor said his “top priority” right now is passage of his minimum-wage bill, which remains stuck in the Senate. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

Police issued an Amber Alert for Relisha Tenau Rudd, 8, on Thursday.

When the National Zoo’s female sloth bear, Khali, delivered three cubs last December, she consumed one of them right after it was born. Carnivores do this in the wild when there is a sick offspring. A deceased cub in the den can draw predators, the zoo said. But a week later, when Khali consumed the second cub, keepers feared for the third. So for the first time in the zoo’s history, keepers took a sloth bear cub from its mother to raise by hand. Three months later, after weeks of incubators, midnight feedings and quiet sessions in a rocking chair, the sickly cub has grown into a healthy 11-pound sphere of black fur and relentless curiosity. The zoo’s sloth bears are not the celebrities that some of their fellow bears are. Adults are shaggy, longnosed, gap-toothed consumers of bugs. A full-grown sloth bear can vacuum 50,000 termites a day with its flexible lips. Not the thing to draw oohs and aahs from the panda crowd. But sloth bears are highly intelligent animals, who keepers say

Zookeepers extracted the as-yet-unnamed sloth bear shortly after her mother consumed its two siblings. The cub was sickly but recovered under the care of keepers.

Backstory Sloth bears are native to India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. They are so named because they were sometimes mistaken for sloths. Both have long claws. There are only about 10,000 sloth bears left in the wild, down from 20,000 eight years ago, the National Zoo said. The zoo has five sloth bears, and there are only 47 in North American zoos. (T WP)

have complex emotions — including fear and outrage — and vibrant personalities, and who enjoy watching videos. They are far more energetic than the indolent giant pandas, their advocates say. “It ’s a ser ious decision if you’re going to pull a cub,” said Mindy Babitz, a sloth bear expert at the zoo. “We’re doing everything we can to be a surrogate mom to her. But we’re not bears.” MICHAEL E. RUANE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Big Blowouts and Big Upsets No. 2 Wisconsin 75, No. 15 American 35 American University’s season of wonder came to a resounding and humbling end Thursday with a 75-35 defeat to second-seeded Wisconsin in the NCAA tournament’s West Region. The No. 15 seed Eagles (20-13) led by seven midway through the first half before getting overrun by the Badgers (27-7), who embarked on a good oldfashioned 40-6 surge — 19-3 to end the first half and 21-3 to start the second — in breezing to a roundof-32 game against No. 7 Oregon on Saturday at Bradley Center.

No. 11 Dayton 60, No. 6 Ohio State 59 Dayton is re-configuring the college basketball map in Ohio. It no longer runs through Columbus after Vee Sanford’s layup with 3.8 seconds left secured 11th-seeded Dayton’s (24-10) victory over the South region’s sixth-seeded Ohio State (25-10). “I guess they called us the little brother, or whatever,” Flyers guard Jordan Sibert said. “We can’t be called that anymore.”

Dayton’s Vee Sanford, center, was the hero with his game-winning layup in the intra-state matchup against Ohio State.

a victory over Western Michigan (23-10). The Orange forced 11 turnovers in the opening half and scored 13 points off them in running out to a double-digit lead before the midpoint of the period — and never looked back.

No. 7 Oregon 87, No. 10 BYU 68

Siyani Chambers scored 11 points, including five straight in the final two minutes, and 12th-seeded Harvard won its second NCAA tournament game in history, upsetting Cincinnati. Wesley Saunders led the Crimson (27-4) with 12 points as Harvard proved last year’s upset of New Mexico as a 14 seed was no f luke. The Crimson became the first Ivy League school with NCAA tournament wins in consecutive years since Princeton in 1983-84. They will play Michigan State in the third round. Har-

Elgin Cook scored a career-high 23 points and the seventh-seeded Ducks pulled away for an 87-68 victory over No. 10 seed BYU. Joseph Young had 19 points for the Ducks (24-9), who had t o s t a ge a big c omebac k t o beat the Cougars 100-96 in overtime in December. There was no comeback needed this time, with Oregon turning away every charge by BYU in the second half, extending its lead to as much as 25. Tyler Haws scored 19 points for BYU (23-12).

No. 3 Syracuse 77, No. 14 W. Michigan 53 The zone is purring again for Syracuse — and so is Trevor Cooney. Cooney scored 18 points, breaking out of a long slump, fellow guard Tyler Ennis had 16, and the Orange (28-5) defense clamped down in

Billy Donovan’s bench came up big, bailing out top-seeded Florida in a tight game against what was supposed to be an overmatched opponent. Dorian Finney-Smith scored 16 points, most of them on dunks, and the Gators used a second-half surge to beat No. 16 seed Albany. The Gators (33-2) showed some vulnerability, though, while extending their school-record winning streak to 27 games. Donovan’s team sleepwalked through the first half, swapping the lead back and forth with the pesky Great Danes (19-15).

No. 4 Michigan St. 93, No. 13 Delaware 78 Adreian Payne scored a career-high 41 points to get Michigan State off to a solid start in the NCAA tournament with a victory over Delaware (25-10). Payne, a 6-foot-10 senior, scored 12 straight points in the first half to help the fourth-seeded Spartans (27-8) to an 18-point lead. He set an NCAA tournament record by making all 17 of his free throws.

No. 9 Pittsburgh 77, No. 8 Colorado 48 Talib Zanna helped Pittsburgh jump out to a huge lead and the Panthers cruised the rest of the way. Zanna scored 16 of his 18 points in the opening half and Pitt (26-9) built a 28-point advantage on the way to a rout of Colorado (23-12). (AP)

The Ragin’ Cajuns won the Sun Belt final despite allowing Georgia State’s Ryan Harrow to go for 37 points. If Louisiana-Lafayette couldn’t stop Harrow, how many points will Doug McDermott score?

After a seven-game losing streak, Marcus Smart and the Cowboys are starting to play like a top 10 team again, having won five of their past seven games. But the West Coast champs are no easy out.

The undefeated Shockers are riding a 34-game winning streak, but they haven’t played a ranked team all year. While they ease into the tournament vs. Cal Poly, their path to the Final Four is as tough as any No. 1 seed’s.

The Eagles might be a tough out. They have won 20 straight games and played Wichita State tough in December. North Carolina Central fell to the Shockers 77-66, but Jeremy Ingram went for 37 points in the loss.

The Jayhawks are obviously a better team when Joel Embiid is on the court, but it’s been fun to watch Andrew Wiggins dominate while the 7-footer is out. Wiggins has averaged 31 points his past three games.

Despite what the NCAA’s T-shirts say, the Colonials are in the field of 68. (On Monday, T-shirts with Georgetown’s logo instead of GW’s were on sale on the NCAA website.) As for the game, it’s a pretty even matchup.

There isn’t a better guard matchup in Day 2. Bryce Cotton led the Friars to their first Big East title since 1994. Marcus Paige was the key to the Tar Heels’ second-half resurgence. Each has gone for 30 in a game this season.

Nats Begin To Thin Out The Roster Nationals The Nationals separated wheat from chaff in their major league camp Thursday, whittling their roster, other than two spare catchers, to only players who seemingly have a viable chance to make the opening day roster. The Nationals optioned reliever Christian Garcia, right-hander Ross Ohlendorf, catcher Jhonatan Solano and infielder Zach Walters to Class AAA Syracuse. They also reassigned non-roster invitees Will Rhymes, Manny Delcarmen and Brock Peterson to minor league camp. Among those cuts, Ohlendorf may be the most notable. He signed a one-year, $1.25 million guaranteed contract this winter. But he struggled through back injuries all spring, and the Nationals will keep him in the minors. He excelled when called upon last season, going 4-1 with a 3.28 ERA in a swing role. The most compelling player left after the Nationals cleaned house may be Blake Treinen, a 25-year-old right-hander the Nationals acquired last winter in the trade that sent Michael Morse to Seattle. Treinen has wowed rival scouts and Nationals officials with his booming velocity. ADAM KILGORE (THE WASHINGTON POST )

College Basketball Soon after the NCAA bracket was announced, George Washington sophomore forward Kevin Larsen reached out to Memphis graduate student David Pellom, who was with the Colonials last season but did not play due to a wrist injury. “I texted him and said ‘Good luck. You’re going to need it.’ ” he said. The ninth-seeded Colonials (249) will face No. 8 Memphis (23-9) on Friday in Raleigh, N.C. “They are a very good team, and they are well coached,” Larsen said of Memphis. “We have to play defense and just play together. That has been our motto all year. If we stick to that, we will win.” Larsen grew up in Copenhagen, Denmark, before he came to the United States to play two seasons of high school basketball at Montrose Christian in Rockville.

Ross Ohlendorf was among those assigned to AAA Syracuse on Thursday.

6:55 P.M.

Colonials forward Kevin Larsen is averaging 11.3 points and 7 rebounds per game.

He is part of an international community at George Washington, just a few blocks from the State Department. And Larsen knows the NCAA tournament is also popular in some parts of Europe. “Now everybody back home [in

Denmark] knows about it,” Larsen said of March Madness. But not everyone may know about Larsen, who played for Denmark’s U-18 national team. He is somewhat overlooked — if that’s possible for someone listed at

6-foot-10, 264 pounds — on a team that includes two players who have NCAA experience at power conference programs. Graduate student guard Maurice Creek transferred from Indiana for his last college season, and redshirt senior forward Isaiah Armwood is in his second season at GW after playing at Villanova. Armwood is also a product of Montrose Christian, and Larsen has looked up to the 6-foot-9 Baltimore native the past two seasons. Larsen is averaging 11.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, while Armwood is averaging 12.5 points and 8.5 rebounds. “I told him this could be our last game together,” Larsen said of Armwood. “I don’t want that to be the case. He has helped me on my game and been like a big brother to me. I really want him to go out on good terms.” DAVID DRIVER (FOR E XPRESS)

United, Toronto FC to Show Off New Look D.C. United D.C. United and Toronto FC may have underwent the more dramatic offseason makeovers in MLS. The two sides — which will square off Saturday afternoon at BMO Field — needed an overhaul, as TFC finished with the third-fewest points in MLS last season while United had the fewest. But the way each side changed its roster was very different. It’s been almost a year since Tim Leiweke arrived as president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE), which owns TFC. Leiweke, who was behind David Beckham’s move to the LA Galaxy in 2007, is known as one of the most audacious sports

executives in North America. And so it was little surprise when Leiweke convinced MLSE to shell out major cash this offseason. TFC’s ownership group spent roughly $80 million to $100 million in transfer fees and salaries on American star Michael Bradley, England’s Jermain Defoe, Brazil national team starting goalkeeper Julio Cesar and Brazilian striker Gilberto — among others. In TFC’s 2014 season opener last weekend, Defoe scored twice in the first 25 minutes, Bradley was all over the field, and Cesar

made the team’s lead stand up in a 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders. United’s roster overhaul was no less sweeping than Toronto FC’s, just not nearly as expensive.

Rather than throw money at big-name internationals, D.C. United acquired trusted MLS veterans in Bobby Boswell, Jeff Parke, Davy Arnaud, Sean Franklin and Fabian Espindola. The team did make one big-money move, trading for U.S. national team striker Eddie Johnson and giving him a big raise. While TFC’s new-look roster is off to a flying start, United showed there may be some growing pains when it fell 3-0 at home to the Columbus Crew in the 2014 opener March 8. It doesn’t get much easier on Saturday, as United travels north to face TFC in front of a soldout BMO Field crowd ready to welcome their new stars to MLS. SETH VERTELNEY (FOR E XPRESS)

He Has a Way With ‘Bad Words’ Jason Bateman let his mouth run wild for his directorial debut Jason Bateman fully admits his character Guy Trilby isn’t anyone’s idea of a hero. In “Bad Words,” Bateman’s directorial debut that opens Friday, Trilby worms his way into a children’s spelling bee on a technicality (he never passed the eighth grade). He’s smarmy and vulgar and just not the guy you’d want hanging out with your middle schooler. Or you. Or anyone on the planet. Yet Bateman had to make him watchable enough so that the comedy’s audiences could root for him, if only a little bit. “It’s not a tried-and-true formula,” Bateman says. “One of my favorite shows growing up was ‘All in the Family,’ and Archie Bunker said a lot of things that were very un-PC, but [Carroll O’Connor]

‘Bad Words’ (R) Director: Jason Bateman Stars: Bateman, Kathryn Hahn and Allison Janney Quick Take: Bateman’s directorial debut looks great, with smart use of slow motion and shots that are framed to amp up the comedy. Bateman, who’s so often the put-upon straight man, really stretches himself here. Breaking Away From the Pack Film Review It’s rare that a movie is as good as the book on which it’s based. It’s even more unusual when it’s better. With the film adaptation of “Divergent,” the first novel in Veronica Roth’s trilogy of dystopian thrillers, director Neil Burger

has crafted a popcorn flick that’s leaner, more propulsive and more satisfying than the best-seller that inspired it. The film even features an ending that more cleverly utilizes the story’s teenage heroine Tris (Shailene Woodley) without changing the outcome. “Divergent” imagines a society in which the citizenry is divided into monolithic factions according to personality. Tris is “divergent,” meaning that she has equal aptitude for more than one faction. Although

Helming “Bad Words,” Bateman made sure to bring shading that rescued his latest character from irredeemability. “You might be saying something very hateful, but it’s important to balance that with a look of regret,” Bateman says. As director, “I knew I’d get that look in the film.” It doesn’t bother Bateman that Trilby occasionally reaches F-bomb critical mass, often in the presence of a prepubescent tagalong competitor (Rohan Chand). It also doesn’t bug him that Trilby doesn’t come out of the film much of a changed man. “There are plenty of great movies out there that send their messages in a bit more of a clearer way, with a tighter ribbon around it,” he says. “Those aren’t the films I’m drawn to. Maybe Lars von Trier is a hit at parties, bringing light and whimsy and laughter wherever he goes. Maybe he brings a nice bottle of wine and asks for the recipe for your mini-quiches and follows up with a thank-you note, or at least tags you in his Facebook status about what a great time he had. Judging by his movies, though, probably not. Von Trier is brilliant (his last film, “Melancholia,” still sticks with me) but he is bleak (I never ever ever want to see “Melancholia” again). That streak continues with “Nymphomaniac Vol. 1,” out Friday. In it, a woman named Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) gets the crap beaten

out of her for as-yet-unknown reasons; a man (Stellan Skarsgard) brings her to his apartment, where she tells him about her extensive sexual history. Which we, the audience, also see. In graphic detail. What’s odd about the sex scenes is that they are incredibly explicit

Lars and Real Girls

Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) is in a Lars von Trier movie, so things get rough for her.

without being the least bit erotic. Joe doesn’t seem to particularly enjoy sex, but women in von Trier’s movies rarely enjoy anything. Accusations of misogyny swirl around the Danish director every time he makes a movie. Apparently he’s incredibly tough on his actors,

males and females equally, from what I’ve read. Often, though, the accusations stem from the fact that the women portrayed in von Trier’s films — usually the central characters — are really messed up. Right now I can turn my head and see the posters of all nine films

that were nominated for the best picture Oscar last year. There are 11 men shown, if you don’t count the stockbrokers in the background of “The Wolf of Wall Street.” There are four women, if you don’t count the hookers in the background of “The Wolf of Wall Street.” That concerns me more than von Trier’s films. Yes, his female characters are often deeply troubled and immensely flawed — which means they’re like actual real women (gra nted, ma ny of t hem a re extreme examples). That’s good; women shouldn’t have to be likable to get top billing in a movie. Von Trier’s women are tough to watch, but at least they’re there. Scoring a great deal on an English basement can feel pretty bright. Living in one, however, can leave tenants feeling in the dark. The subterranean rentals, which usually rely on tiny, ground-level windows for natural light, are common in the D.C. area. But don’t resign yourself to feeling like a cave-dweller when you live in one: There are plenty of ways to brighten up the spaces. If your place is lacking natural light, add some light of the man-made variety. “Finding lamps was the quest of my entire first year and a half in the apartment,” says Kate Davey, 26, who works in business development for Deloitte and lives in a one-bedroom Capitol Hill basement apartment. (202265-0443, bossycolor.com). “The brighter a space is, the larger it will seem,” she says. That’s why some renters make lighting a priority from the beginning of the apartment search. Elias Sanchez-Eppler, 25, a government contractor who lives in a two-bedroom basement apartment in LeDroit Park, recommends looking for places with recessed lighting, or fixtures installed flush with the ceiling. He lucked out, finding a place with nearly 30 recessed lights, to brighten up his approximately 850-square-foot underground lair. If you want to add fixtures like that, though, check with your landlord. Davey needed a ceiling light fixture in her dining nook — the blinds on its four windows had to be partially closed for privacy, making the space a little too dark.

or brass. “Look for things that are reflective,” Elliott says. “Brass end tables, or a reflective tray on a coffee table will bounce some light around.” These days, even throw pillows come in metallic fabrics. And, of course, simply hanging a mirror in the right spot will help get sunlight in the apartment. You can also reach for a paintbrush to lighten up your home — assuming your landlord lets you paint, that is. That’s the route Mandy Paust, 28, took in the one-bedroom Capitol Hill basement apartment she shares with her boyfriend. Paust, a fellow at the U.S. Agency for International Development, painted her front dining area an eggshell “fresh butter” color, which has a slight sheen that helps reflect light. She also painted the wall opposite their fireplace a burnt red

to play off the bricks. Elliott suggests painting walls a light color but not white, such as a wash of aqua. “If you don’t have a lot of natural light, then white walls can look dirty, and rental-unit cream walls can look even worse,” Elliott says. If things still aren’t as aglow as you’d hoped, give fake sunlight a try. Davey uses a full-spectrum light bulb in a floor lamp in her bedroom, which she’s hooked up to a timer so it turns on with the sunrise. The energy-efficient bulb, which typically costs less than $10, simulates natural sunlight. “It tends to wake your brain up a bit more,” Davey says. But brainstimulating bulbs are probably not suited for every fixture in your place, she says, “unless you want to be wired.” REBECCA KERN (FOR EXPRESS)

Let There Be Light 1 Interior designer Annie Elliott loves the bright-colored, metallic table lamps (Juggler lamp shown, $473) sold at Vastu. (1829 14th St. NW, 202-234-8344, vastudc.com)

2 Elliott also recommends the painted velvet Jackie pillows in frost ($99) at Room & Board, saying their metallic shimmer can lighten up a room. (1840 14th St. NW, 202-7298300, roomandboard.com) 3 Kate Davey mounted Ikea’s Böja pendant lamp in rattan basket weave ($59.99) in her English basement on Capitol Hill. 4 Davey also picked up Design Within Reach’s Tolix Marais A metal chair ($250, shown at left in her Capitol Hill apartment), which reflects some light. (3306 M St. NW, 202339-9480, dwr.com). R.K.

JASON HORNICK (FOR EXPRESS)

With the help of her dad, Davey jerry-rigged a hanging lamp from Ikea to illuminate her dining area. Its lamp shade, a rattan basket weave, lets more light through than a solid shade. In addition to her creative use of lamps, Davey tries to get as much real sunlight into her place as possible. During the day (weather permitting), she keeps her front door open to let in sunlight (but keeps the iron gate in front of it closed to keep out unwanted guests). For even more natural light, choose the right window treatments. With street-level windows, renters must strike a balance between adding light and losing privacy. Elliott recommends sheer, light-colored linen drapes, which run about $60 a piece at Pottery Barn. If your windows come with those ubiquitous plastic blinds, she advises you pull the blinds up and put the linen sheers on top. Once you have some light, make the most of it by decorating with metallic finishes like silver, gold

Constantine smash-and-grabs his way from Madrid to Dublin to London with the wicked Badguy (Ricky Gervais); and Kermit languishes in a Siberian prison camp, winning

Jake Gyllenhaal and Canadian director Denis Villeneuve did some pretty good work together last fall with “Prisoners,” a violent thriller that possessed more style than substance. The same can be said for “Enemy,” a more enigmatic exercise that suffers from similar mannerisms and emptiness. Gyllenhaal plays Adam, a withdrawn, socially awkward college professor who discovers that there’s a bit-playing actor out there who is his exact physical double. As Adam pursues his own personal existential mystery story, “Enemy,” which is adapted from the Jose Saramago novel “The Double,” plays around with notions that have captivated artists from Nabokov to David Lynch. The psycho-erotic cat-andmouse game takes place in Toronto and has been filmed in jaundiced shades of yellowing beige; the wan, lifeless palette matches the film’s overarching tone of drained, depressive enervation. But for all the skill with which Villeneuve creates a forbidding, soupy-colored dystopia, “Enemy” feels like something we’ve seen before — not just from Lynch but David Cronenberg, Stanley Kubrick and any number of contemporary masters of the subconscious at its most fetishistic and unnerving. DRIVING FORCES IN LOCAL FASHION Business owners take chic clothing retail to the streets

GLAMOURHOLIC CURBSIDE FASHION TRUCK @curbsidefashtrk | You can’t miss Myss Stephens’ girly boutique-on-wheels. She’s most often found at markets throughout Maryland, and you can also commission her services for private shopping events. Expect trendy women’s clothing and accessories, all under $100.

KATE WARREN FOR EXPRESS

Myss Stephens, a Prince George’s County, Md., resident and trainer for the U.S. Census Bureau, was saving up to buy herself a Porsche two summers ago when another vehicle caught her eye: a white, 1997, 23-foot-long GMC van. “I saw it on Craigslist and was like, OK, I need to have that,” she says.

GYPSY DE LA LUNE @gypsydelalune | A self-described vintage vagabond, Ashley Grant deals in pristine threads and jewels from past decades, which she sells for $20-$200 in her decked-out 1934 trailer. Catch her April 5 on opening day of the District Flea. Bethesda-based Grant also hosts small shopping parties in the trailer.

Today, rather than zipping around town in a splashy sports car, Stephens hawks trendy women’s clothing and accessories out of the van, which she renovated and re-branded as the GlamourHolic Curbside Fashion Truck (glamourholic onlineshop.com). The boutique on wheels — one of many that have appeared recently on local streets — is covered in pink, houses a spacious dressing room, and makes a strong case for ignoring your mother’s warnings

about not getting into the back of a stranger’s vehicle. Rolling boutiques are gaining speed across the country. Stacey Steffe, co-founder and president of the American Mobile Retailer Association, estimates that in January of 2011 there were three fashion trucks in operation in the U.S.; now there are more than 350. The D.C. area hosts at least seven of them. Similar to food trucks, these fashion trucks can set up shop near high-trafficked areas like parks and

open-air markets. (Track them via Twitter handles, Facebook or their websites.) Roving retail often appeals to fashion newbies who yearn to open their own boutiques, but can’t afford the startup costs of an actual storefront. That was the case with Sharlia Lee, owner of the Street Boutique fashion truck and founder of the D.C. Fashion Truck Association. “I wrote 30 business plans for a store, and came to the conclusion that owning a boutique was going to end poorly,” Lee says. And Ashley Grant, owner of the Gypsy de la Lune (gypsydelalune .com) mobile vintage clothing shop, prefers her 1934 Shasta trailer to other retail alternatives. “I didn’t want the overhead of a brick and mortar, and online sales never appealed to me,” Grant says. “I really don’t like being stuck behind a computer.” Others see fashion trucks as an outlet for creativity lacking at their day jobs. Georgia Littlejohn, for example, is a full-time police officer in the District, but in her spare time she operates G Fashion Truck, a church van-turned rolling, upscale consignment shop. She sells brands like Michael Kors

and Jimmy Choo around Southern Maryland and is available for private events (thegtruck.com). Some entrepreneurs launch mobile shops because they see a gap in the market. Donna Hundley, a consultant for Aon Hewitt and a self-described curvy woman, was hunting for an outfit she could wear for a meet-and-greet with Michael Jordan last year. “Every store I went to only had black boxy clothing for women my size,” Hundley says. “I’m not saying Michael’s going to meet me and fall madly in love, but I still wanted to look good.”

Now Hundley pilots the Curvy Chix Chariot — a 22.1-foot Ford van — out of which she sells fashion-forward accessories, shoes and clothing for women sized 14-24 (curvychixchariot.com). Mo s t f a s h ion t r uc k s a r e between 18 and 23 feet long, meaning the variety of merch is small compared to more traditional boutiques. But there’s power in tiny: The limitation translates to high turnover and a constantly fresh selection. Another benefit to shopping retail vehicles: Because the model is unfamiliar to most shop-

@thegtruck | When Georgia Littlejohn isn’t serving justice as a D.C. police officer, the Prince George’s County, Md. resident sells gently used designer fashions in her converted church van across southern Maryland. Think Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Dooney & Bourke and Jimmy Choo for less than $250.

pers, store owners often coax customers onboard with low prices. “Someone who is going to spend $500 on a dress isn’t going to say, ‘Let me go on that truck,’ ” says Hundley, whose prices range from $8 to $160. For anyone still skeptical about buying clothing out of the back of a truck, consider shifting gears. “The pop-up mentality is here to stay, especially in a struggling economy” says Steffe of the American Mobile Retailer Association. “It’s the new way of doing retail.” HOLLEY SIMMONS (E XPRESS)

@curvychixstyle | Donna Hundley’s Clinton, Md.-based mobile boutique hit the road last September. Ever since, she’s been selling fashion-forward clothing and accessories for women sized 14-24, priced between $8 and $160.

of large-animal veterinarians, armed with the stout rasps and hedge clippers the uncovering of which will cause the other guests, such as the teeny flower girls and the elderly aunts, to cry out and recoil in horror, and after which we shall be forever known as the guests who, quote, “ruined Madison and Kyle’s wedding in Panama City with their toes.” We have devised the clever plan to avoid that embarrassing eventuality. We shall locate the espadrilles with the wedge heel which will cover our gnarly secret shame and render their power to destroy the random social events inert. It is foolproof! Look! Here, from Castaner is the Carina, the simple and attractive wedge-heel espadrille ($195, farfetch.com or castaner.com). It is sold in the variety of happy colors on their website. Ask the Manolo a question at manolo@shoeblogs.com. Visit the Manolo at shoeblogs.com.

NUBIAN HUEMAN

I’ve got a destination beach wedding to go to soonish. Could you recommend any closetoed, close-heeled, wedge espadrilles that aren’t too expensive and could be worn to a picnic or a night on the town? Or any other close-toed, closeheeled shoe that can survive some sand and seawater and isn’t a Croc? I just don’t do sandals, and I refuse to let sand ruin my work shoes. — MARY

Pattern Players CLOTHING DESIGNERS Paul Heyne and Karen Bogut create and dye fabric and sew their women’s line in Philadelphia, not New York or Paris. Which explains their unusual, pretty-meetsgritty vibe: dreamy knits in abstract patterns, curvehugging dresses (shown, $350) in inspired florals. The line is just in stock at Betsy Fisher (1224 Connecticut Ave. NW; 202-7851975), which will host a trunk show of the spring line March 2829.

YES, ANOTHER local

pickle company. But here’s why Baba’s is different: It’s run by a mom-and-son team (adorable) using a family recipe that dates back to 1950. Made locally in Union Kitchen, Baba’s bread and butter pickles are available in regular, spicy and agave flavors ($7.50, Each Peach Market, 3068 Mount Pleasant St. NW; 202-525-1725).

Wing Menu NETTING BUTTERFLIES and feeding them to your pet lizard: unkind. Buying Thomas Paul’s new melamine Metamorphosis plates: a pretty way to celebrate spring. Sold in sets of four ($36$44, shopthomaspaul.com), the tableware seems ideal for dinners on the deck, which we promise are imminent. Matching coasters and serving platters are also available.

Sole of the ’70s THINK OF CLOGS as the city girl’s answer

to “American Hustle”-ish platforms: groovy and glam, but a bit sensible. GoodWood (1428 U St. NW; 202-986-3640) gets in on the retro vibe with Cape clogs (shown, $99). The U.S.-made stompers come in a range of hues and heel heights. Grab Bag is gathered and reviewed by Jennifer Barger and Holley Simmons. Lanterns and zinnias bring zing to one of Michael Devine’s garden parties.

ADDICTION CLEANSING THERAPY MICHAEL DEVINE

“Don’t wait till it’s too late”

Any tips on arranging flowers? Start simply. For an impromptu dinner, I might do single stems in glass blocks. Think about consistency, color and big masses.

FACE TIME

Michael Devine

Do you have any favorite flower vessels? I like the idea of giving things secondary use. I used flower buckets in the book for a lunch, and for another party, I put roses in compotes that were filled with chicken wire.

The book makes your garden look like a charming outdoor room. How can I do that? Divide the space up. Do seating areas! Set up cafe tables and chairs.

Any tips on buying flowers? Try and get the freshest flowers you can. And don’t always buy the ones in the fullest bloom. You want them to peak on the table at dinner!

Do you have favorite flowers to plant in small spaces? I do lots of roses and salvia, things that will blossom through most of the summer.

What’s the trick to arranging a cool tablescape? Start with a theme. Like I did a butterfly lunch with fake bugs. Or go with what’s in bloom.

What about fruits and veggies? How do I get started? To ge t s t a r t e d growing vegetables, it depends on your skills and sunlight. Lettuces are a good place to start, though. And I love heirloom tomatoes, so I do them in my garden. And Brussels sprouts — they’re beautiful. They grow like sculptures.

MICHAEL DEVINE

Trust us: You want to be invited to a backyard bash at textile designer and style guru Michael Devine’s Hudson Valley, N.Y., cottage. He’s known for both cooking up fresh-from-the-plot dishes (spring sorrel and salmon tart, eggs topped with rose petals) and setting a hip table. He shows off his mad entertaining skills in a new book, “An Invitation to the Garden” ($40, Rizzoli).

Among garden-fresh recipes in Michael Devine’s book: a sorrel and salmon tart.

I like that the book has garden parties all year round, including some indoor ones in the dead of winter. How can you set a table for those? Try to stick with what’s available when you look outside. This time of year, it’s a lot of branches and evergreens. Then fill in with supermarket flowers for some color.

How challenging is it to come up with seasonal menus? It’s about stepping back from the supermarket. Try farm stands. But hey, I buy grapefruit at the grocery store! What’s the biggest challenge to throwing an outdoor party? Bugs! But try citronella torches. You can even find tiny ones at the dollar store. JENNIFER BARGER (EXPRESS)

“what a perfect storm of coincidence” — COMMENTER MIHAIL ETROPOLSKI AT YOUTUBE.COM sums up a video that

The last clip of the viral video is the kicker: It’s a scene from “American Hustle” where the now-famous Cooper humiliates Louis CK.
